damnoen saduak floating market day trip

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is one of the most popular day trips from Bangkok, Thailand. Visitors are drawn to this intriguing day market – eager to witness the chaotic charm of local vendors selling their fresh fruits, souvenirs, and handicrafts from the boughs of traditional wooden boats adorned with colorful umbrellas.

We took a day trip to the floating market during one of the 4 days we spent in Bangkok . It was a full-fledged sensory experience and one of the most exciting days during our trip. If you are considering a similar day trip, we’ve laid out what you can expect so you can make an educated decision whether or not to add Damnoen Saduak to your itinerary.

This travel guide to visiting the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market includes everything you need to know about this Bangkok floating market day trip.

About the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

a crowded canal in the floating market near Bangkok

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is an iconic attraction located 100 kilometers (about an hour and a half) southwest of Bangkok.

Floating markets have been an integral part of Thai life for centuries, dating back to the time when water transportation was the primary means of travel and trade. The waterways served as the lifeblood of communities, and floating markets emerged as bustling hubs where locals could exchange goods and produce.

While there are numerous floating markets you can visit in Thailand, a Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Bangkok day trip is one of the most popular. It stands as the largest, most famous, and best preserved of the floating markets that Thailand is known for .

How to Get to There

people in a van on a guided day trip from Bangkok to the floating markets

There are a couple of ways to get to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok.

The most popular way to get to there is to join a guided tour. Many tour companies in Bangkok offer day trips to Damnoen Saduak , which often include transportation, a visit to the market, and sometimes additional stops at other attractions, like the Maeklong Railway Market .

The first listing on this page is the tour we personally booked for our floating market day trip, and we had a wonderful time! Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Bangkok, take you to a rural train station where you will first take the train to the railway market.

There, you have time to explore and watch the train depart before meeting back up with your guide to head to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, where you’ll have time for lunch and shopping before taking a boat ride through the canal.

Book a guided tour to the floating market and the railway market HERE

If you prefer to visit the floating market on your own, you can. However, it is a bit more complicated.

While you can take a train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai , or Surat Thani in southern Thailand near Khao Sok National Park and Krabi , there are no trains to the floating market. You’ll either need to rent a car and drive, which I don’t recommend in Bangkok, or hire a private car or taxi.

Additionally, you can take a public bus to Damnoen, but it doesn’t drop you off at the market, so you’ll have to then negotiate a taxi ride from the bus terminal, making it a less-than-ideal option.

A guided tour is actually a really cost-effective option while still giving you the space and time for individual exploration of the market. The guide also pre-negotiates the price of your boat ride, so there is no need to haggle with the boat operators to take you around.

What to Do on a Bangkok Floating Market Day Trip

Whether you join a tour or visit on your own, here are the best things to do once you arrive at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

Take a Boat Ride

Taking a boat ride at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is obviously the most enchanting experience you will have during your day trip from Bangkok.

You’ll board a long-tailed boat and sit beneath colorful umbrellas that offer shade during your 15-minute ride through the canals. As you drift along the canals, you’ll navigate between boats of other visitors, purchase goods and haggle the price in baht.

Enjoy the view from the water as you cruise by the wooden boats loaded with fresh fruits (try rambutan, it’s delicious), and local crafts.

Friendly vendors donning straw hats greet you with smiles as they invite you to browse the goods displayed on their boats. The lively chatter and haggling between vendors and customers add to the market’s bustling atmosphere.

After navigating through boats of vendors on your market tour, your boat will turn a corner offering you a contrastingly quiet glimpse of life surrounding the floating marketplace with homes built on stilts.

If you choose a self-guided adventure, you can opt for a longer boat ride, which lasts about an hour.

Enjoy a Thai Lunch at the Food Court

If you take a guided tour to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, you’ll arrive there around the lunch hour. So, indulge in a Thai lunch at the food court before boarding a boat. You’ll find a variety of food stalls offering lots of different Thai options from Tom Yum soup to Pad Thai and flavorful green curry. Locals and visitors gather around communal tables as everyone savors their meals.

Be sure to try some coconut ice cream, as well, which is a sweet treat on a hot day. It’s one of the best foods to try in Thailand .

Go Shopping for Souvenirs and Handicrafts

Just like the markets in Chiang Mai , Bangkok, or Krabi , you’ll find a variety of Thailand souvenirs , handicrafts, and local products at the floating market that can make for interesting gifts or mementos of your trip.

Vendors on the boats and in the surrounding walkable market sell items such as clothing, handbags, jewelry, and trinkets that will perfectly represent your trip to this intriguing part of Thailand.

Be sure to bring some Thai baht, Thailand’s currency, because many of the vendors do not accept credit cards.

Tips for Visiting Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Whether you’re traveling alone, as a couple, or visiting Thailand with kids , the floating market is a fun place to visit. Here are a few tips to ensure you have a great time on your day trip to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok.

Hire a Guide

Booking a guided tour is truly the best way to experience Damnoen Saduak Floating Market on a Bangkok day trip. We don’t do a lot of guided tours, but in Thailand it is a great way to see rural areas without having the stress of driving.

Your tour guide can also provide background information on the market, the region, and Thai culture to deepen your appreciation of the experience. Although your guide will take care of the logistics, you’ll still have the freedom to explore on your own, peruse the market, shop, eat, and take lots of beautiful photos. You aren’t with a guide the entire time.

Embrace the Chaos

view from above the Damneon Saduak Floating Market

Due to its popularity, the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market can get quite crowded, especially during peak tourism seasons.

Although it is the largest floating market in Thailand, the canals can become crowded with boats all trying to navigate through the narrow passageways. Some visitors find that the large number of tourists takes away from the authenticity of the experience and creates a somewhat chaotic scene.

To get the most out of your time at this popular floating market near Bangkok, embrace the chaos as part of the experience. Boats will stop along the canal and haggle with vendors, which can cause traffic jams at times.

But just like the traffic on the roads in Bangkok, the busyness of the canals is part of the uniqueness of visiting a floating market.

Get there Early

the bough of the boat along a quiet part of the canal

To experience the market at its liveliest and most authentic state, and avoid the crowds, consider arriving early in the morning. Of course, this is only possible if you do a self-guided tour to the market rather than taking a guided day trip.

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market shuts down around 1pm, so if you are planning a visit to this floating market near Bangkok, you will need to leave the city in the morning to see the market in action.

While the market itself is busy, you will reach a part of the boat ride that is more of a serene float through a quieter canal.

Walk around the Market First

walking through the vendor stalls on land at the Damnoen Saduak market

Before you board a longtail boat and explore the canals, take a moment to get your bearings. Walk around the market, take in the sights and smells as the street food vendors cook up their delicacies.

Navigate toward the canal and capture some photos of the canal from land and cross the footbridge to the other side. From the footbridge you’ll get a really unique bird’s eye view of the floating market in action. This is a great way to get a feel for the market before your boat ride.

A Guide to Thailand's Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

damnoen saduak floating market day trip

Emad Aljumah/Getty Images

The Thais love their canals: until the 20th century, the rivers and khlong (canals) that crisscrossed the capital were Bangkok ’s primary transportation system and the reason the city was nicknamed the “Venice of the Far East.”

Most of the khlong have since been paved over, and most commuters have since switched over to the capital’s highways and railways. But locals haven’t completely let go of the canal life: commuters still travel on the Chao Phraya Express and other boat services on surviving Bangkok khlong, and floating markets like Damnoen Saduak retain a spirited following.

Established on its namesake khlong linking the Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers, the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a Thai tourist institution that does business (almost) entirely on the water: vendors on boats sell produce, dry goods, souvenirs and street food to their clientele, which these days are mainly tourists instead of locals.

The market is located some 60 miles west of Bangkok, and operates only in the morning from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., making it a scenic daytime stop that many tourists put on their Thailand bucket list.

What to Do at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

You’ll want to get up early for a visit to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market; many tourists leave their Bangkok hotel before 6 a.m. to make the hour-long trip to the khlong.

You can arrange a pre-packaged, organized tour of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, courtesy of the many travel agencies operating around Thailand. Alternatively, you can also book a waiting boat at the wharf and go on your own, though that presents its own problems: you may be charged upward of 2,000 baht (around $60) for a two-hour tour that also includes a stop at one of the nearby temples.

You’ll ride a small, wooden boat that seats an average of four (not including the pilot); the visit will include a visit to the floating market proper, also known as Ton Khem, and the parallel floating market called Talaat Hia Kui, where land-based stalls sell a selection of kitschy souvenirs for sale.

  • Shopping: Sellers wearing indigo work clothes and flat-topped straw hats hawk produce like local herbs and spices; fruits like durian and mangosteen; and assorted made-in-China souvenirs—either from their own boats or from one of the land-based stalls along the river. You’ll want to haggle the prices down , as the original prices are inflated for tourists.
  • Eating: Old ladies cook food right on their boats, and hand dishes to you to eat. Pad Thai, spring rolls, fried rice, and Chinese-style dumplings are all on the menu —experienced travelers wait till they get in the boat to fill up for breakfast. The dishes may range in price from 10 to 70 baht (30 cents and up) per order.
  • Other nearby experiences: Close to the Floating Market, you may be cajoled by the boat pilot into visiting a few other detours nearby. Foodies will enjoy the nearby coconut sugar farm where they can get hands-on in the process of making sugar out of coconut palm sap, and Wat Rat Charoen Tham temple introduces culturally curious tourists with the local religious practice, down to meeting local Buddhist monks.

Tips for Visiting the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak experience can be an assault on the senses, with the twisty passages between boats and the jumble of watercraft all demanding your attention as your boat picks its way through the canal, the rising heat of the day (especially if you visit later in the morning), and the smell of the cooking food clashing with the damp odor of the canal water.

Make the most out of your visit by following these tips:

  • Don’t believe the touts. Some touts will have you believe that you can’t walk from the van stop to the market and that instead, you’ll have to hire a boat to get to the market, as soon as you get down. This is not true: you’ll need to take a 10-minute walk to the market site.
  • Take your time. The boat will go quite slowly through the crowds, especially if it’s peak tourist season. Bring sunscreen or a wide-brimmed hat, as you’ll be exposed to the sun for a fair bit through the ride. Expect to be splashed by dirty khlong water, too.
  • Avoid buying clothes. The prices for clothes at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market are extortionate, sometimes going for four times as much as the same merchandise you can buy at Chatuchak Weekend Market or one of Bangkok’s night markets .
  • Choose food carefully. Eat food that is cooked right in front of you, avoid food that looks like it’s been out for a while. The fruits—once peeled—are safe, and worth diving into.
  • Ask about exploring the back alleys. This is applicable for tourists who haven’t booked a package tour—you can ask your boat pilot to take you to the residential part of the local khlongs, so you can see how the Thai live and work by the water.
  • Watch your fingers. Don’t grip the boat with your fingers over the side, as you’ll risk injuring them in case another boat bumps yours.

Getting to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Assuming you’re not taking a package tour of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, you’ll want to take public transportation to the site.

Start at the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok or Sai Tai Mai. From here, catch Bus 78 to get to Damnoen Saduak. The trip takes about an hour and a half to complete.

The bus stop is next to a boat pier, but riding a boat is not necessary as soon as you disembark from the bus (no matter what the persistent local touts say). Walk to the actual Damnoen Saduak khlong and you can ride a boat there.

To get back to Bangkok, walk back to the bus drop-off and catch bus 78 heading back.

Alternatives to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Let’s face it, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market isn’t exactly authentic. It’s touristy, true, but the experience here only barely reflects the daily life of your average Thai—in fact, it can feel more like a money grab than a meaningful immersion into local living.

If you'd like to see a floating market experience that more closely reflects the lived experience of Thai locals, visit Amphawa floating market instead. Unlike Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa operates only on weekend nights. The wares sold at Amphawa reflect the local way of life more than that of the tourists—think more produce, fruit, and ethically-sourced traditional crafts.

3 Ways to Go to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok

There are 3 ways to reach Damnoen Saduak Floating Market if you are from the city center of Bangkok . These are via public bus , shuttle bus tour , or private tour . Normally, the travel time to the market is around 1 hour and 45 minutes .

In my case, I personally took the second option , which is the shuttle bus tour . I will explain in detail why I picked this one, along with the other transport choices.

1. By BTS Skytrain and Public Bus

A Visual Guide on Getting to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market by BTS and Public Bus

To get to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok, ride the BTS Skytrain to Bang Wa Station . Then, catch a taxi going to Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) . From there, take bus #78 to Damnoen Saduak. The total journey time is around 2 hours , with a cost of about 50 Baht per way.

The bus starts operating at 6 AM and leaves every 40 minutes. Since bus #78 drops you about 1 km away from the floating market, you need to take a taxi again to reach the market.

Upon arrival at Damnoen Saduak market, hop aboard the electric boat and tour around the floating market. The entire boat ride lasts for about 1 hour.

This costs around 800 Baht per person, or roughly 1500 Baht per boat. Beware of scammers because they might charge you 2000 Baht per person for 1-hour boat ride.

2. Join a Tour (Shuttle Bus)

Day Trip to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok by Bus Tour

For an easy and fast way to go from Bangkok to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, it’s best to join a bus tour.

I personally joined this popular bus tour in Bangkok because of its convenience . Everything is well taken care of, so all you have to do is relax and wait for your destination.

Another reason why I opted for this transport option is because of the notorious scamming in the place. Most of my friends told me about many dishonest boat operators, overcharging the boat rates.

So, if you want to avail of this one, check the tour price here . You’ll be surprised because the rate is actually is not that expensive .

Plus, you’ll be supported by a local tour guide who is very professional , highly informative , and well-versed in English . Along with that, you will be given tips on where to eat in the market.

3. Take a Private Tour (Car/Van)

The third option is the private Damnoen Saduak Floating Market tour that comes with a car or van as transportation.

This might be the fastest way to reach the market. However, it’s a bit expensive compared to taking a group tour in Bangkok.

To know the rates ahead, see the private tour price here .

On the good side, this one offers hotel pick-up and drop-off services . That’s why this is highly suitable for those with senior parents. Surely, this is a nice option for the entire family or even groups of friends.

So, we’ve come to the ending section of my article. Thank you for taking your time to read my Damnoen Saduak guide. I hope you find it instructive and useful for your upcoming trip. 🙂

All I can say is that Damnoen Saduak Floating Market really deserves to be part of your plans when visiting the Bangkok. It’s a great side trip from the city if you want to experience a special market in Thailand.

Damnoen Saduak Main Canal

What's In This Guide?

One day trip to bangkok’s damnoen saduak floating market.

There are plenty of one-day trips in and around Bangkok. One popular weekend activity is to visit a floating market such as the Ban Nam Peung Floating Market on Bang Krachao or the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Samut Sakhon.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market entrance

The Damnoen Saduak canal is the longest canal that has been dug in Thailand. It was constructed by King Rama 3 to connect the Thachin River in Samut Sakhon Province and the Kaeklong River in Samut Songkharm Province. Construction took 2 years.

The Damnoen Saduak canal is 32 kilometers long, 12 meters wide and 3 meters deep.

Originally the canal provided people with water for agriculture all year round. These days it serves as a floating market and method of transportation for the community.

Where is the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market?

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located in Samut Songkhram, about 109 km, or 2 hours south-west of Bangkok.

The best way of getting to the market is by a minivan. A ticket costs about 150 thb (USD 5) per person one way.

It is also only a short 15 km drive from the larger and more authentic  Amphawa Floating Market and the Maeklong Railway Market .

The Samut Songkhram area surrounding the Ampawha and Damnoen Saduak floating markets is great for a relaxing one night escape from Bangkok. Be sure to check out the boutique guesthouses like the  Pomelo Ampawha the Local Residence.

When to Visit Damnoen Saduak?

The best and most lively time to visit Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is in the morning from about 7am.

The market is open until the about 4pm in the afternoon although many of the shops will be closed by that time. You can still enjoy a boat ride through the canals though.

The best way of getting around the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is by hopping on a rowboat. This should cost about 300 THB per boat.

A boat tour through the canals will last for up to 2hrs. This gives plenty of time to visit the stalls along the way.

Useful tips for the Floating Market:

  • Do NOT visit the market at the end of a long weekend (Thai Public Holiday weekend) as you will find yourself stuck in a highway traffic jam for over 4hrs
  • Better to get to Damnoen Saduak by minibus rather than a taxi. Taxis are expensive and will drop you off to any of their scamming overpriced partners for canal tours, upwards of 1000thb per person.

History and Background of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market dates back to the late 19th century, when King Rama IV ordered the construction of a 32-kilometer-long canal to connect the Mae Klong River and the Tha Chin River. The canal was completed in 1868, and it became a vital waterway for the local people, who used it for transportation, irrigation, and trade. The canal also enabled the development of the surrounding areas, where many wooden houses, plantations, and temples were built along the banks.

The floating market emerged as a result of the canal's economic and social significance. The local people, mostly farmers and fishermen, would use their long-tail boats to bring their products and goods to the canal, where they would sell them to other villagers and visitors. The floating market became a lively and colorful scene, where one could find a variety of items, such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, food, clothes, souvenirs, and handicrafts. The floating market also became a cultural and religious center, where people would exchange news, gossip, and blessings.

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market has changed over time, as modernization and urbanization have affected the canal and the local life. However, the floating market has managed to preserve its original charm and authenticity, and it still attracts thousands of tourists every year, who come to experience the unique and fascinating Thai culture and lifestyle.

Features and Characteristics of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located about 100 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, in the Ratchaburi province. The floating market is actually composed of three smaller markets, namely Ton Khem, Hia Kui, and Khun Phitak. Each market has its own features and characteristics, but they all share the same essence and atmosphere.

One of the main features and characteristics of the floating market is the long-tail boat, which is a traditional wooden boat with a long propeller shaft and a colorful canopy. The long-tail boat is the main mode of transportation and trade at the floating market, and it can carry up to six passengers and a variety of products and goods. The long-tail boat is also a symbol of the Thai culture and identity, as it reflects the ingenuity and adaptability of the local people.

Another feature and characteristic of the floating market is the colorful and diverse products and goods that are sold and bought at the canal. The floating market is a paradise for shoppers and foodies, as one can find almost anything that one can imagine, from fresh and exotic fruits, such as mangoes, bananas, pineapples, and durians, to delicious and mouth-watering food, such as noodles, rice, coconut pancakes, and grilled seafood. Another feature and characteristic of the floating market is the lively and vibrant atmosphere that fills the canal and the surrounding areas. The floating market is a place to enjoy and experience the sights and sounds of the Thai culture and lifestyle, such as the smiles and greetings of the friendly and hospitable vendors, the bargaining and haggling of the buyers and sellers, the music and songs of the performers and entertainers, and the prayers and chants of the monks and devotees. The floating market is also a place to admire and appreciate the natural and cultural beauty of the canal and the nearby attractions, such as the green and lush plantations, the quaint and charming wooden houses, and the ancient and sacred temples.

Transportation and Logistics to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located about 100 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, and it can be reached by various modes of transportation and logistics. However, not all of them are equally convenient and cost-effective, and they can affect the quality and duration of your visit. Here are some of the main transportation and logistics options for getting to the floating market from Bangkok, and their pros and cons:

- Joining a tour: One of the easiest and most hassle-free ways to get to the floating market from Bangkok is to join a tour that is organized by a travel agency or a hotel. This way, you do not have to worry about finding and booking the transportation, as the tour will provide you with a comfortable and air-conditioned bus or van that will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. The tour will also include a guide who will explain and assist you along the way, as well as a boat ride and a visit to some of the nearby attractions. The tour usually costs between 500 and 1000 baht per person, and it lasts for about half a day or a full day, depending on the itinerary and the stops. The downside of joining a tour is that you will have less flexibility and freedom to explore and enjoy the floating market at your own pace and preference, as you will have to follow the schedule and the group of the tour.

- Taking a bus: Another way to get to the floating market from Bangkok is to take a public bus that runs from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok to the Damnoen Saduak Bus Terminal in Ratchaburi. The bus number is 78, and it operates from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The bus ride takes about two hours, and it costs about 50 baht per person. Once you arrive at the Damnoen Saduak Bus Terminal, you will have to take a songthaew (a shared pick-up truck) or a motorbike taxi to the floating market, which will take another 20 minutes and cost about 20 baht per person. The advantage of taking a bus is that you will have more - flexibility and freedom to explore and enjoy the floating market at your own pace and preference, as you will have more control over your time and budget. The disadvantage of taking a bus is that you will have to deal with the hassle and uncertainty of finding and waiting for the bus, as well as the discomfort and crowdedness of the bus ride, especially during the peak hours and seasons.

- Hiring a taxi: Another way to get to the floating market from Bangkok is to hire a private taxi that will take you directly to the floating market. This is the most convenient and comfortable way to get to the floating market, as you do not have to worry about finding and booking the transportation, as well as the traffic and the stops along the way. The taxi ride takes about an hour and a half, and it costs about 1500 baht for a round trip. You can also negotiate with the driver to include a boat ride and a visit to some of the nearby attractions, which will cost extra. The benefit of hiring a taxi is that you will have the most flexibility and freedom to explore and enjoy the floating market at your own pace and preference, as you will have your own vehicle and driver. The drawback of hiring a taxi is that it is the most expensive and least eco-friendly way to get to the floating market, as you will have to pay a high fare and contribute to the carbon footprint.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Tour (aka the Bangkok Floating Market)

UPDATE MAY 2022: I’ve lived in Bangkok since 2010, and when my family and friends visit me here, they always want to go on the Damnoen Sadual Floating Market Tour (aka the ‘ Bangkok floating market ‘, although it’s not quite in Bangkok!).

It’s an iconic thing to see and do, and super easy as a day trip from Bangkok, much like all my last day trip in Ayutthaya , or with all the things to do in Kanchanaburi . There are other more traditional floating markets outside Bangkok (Amphawa for example), and around Thailand but Damnoen Saduak is the most famous by far. You can either take a tour there from Bangkok. Or you can travel independently, I explain both further down.

So, what’s up with Damnoen Saduak floating market? How do you get there? how much is the ticket price etc? Let me help you guys out.

TLDR? Or if you’re just looking to book a tour from Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, then use the same guys I did, and combine it with the epic ‘train market’ (more info below if you want it!).

What is damnoen saduak floating market, where is damnoen saduak floating market, how to get to damnoen saduak floating market from bangkok, damnoen floating market opening hours & days:.

  • Damnoen Floating Market Tour; My  Experience

Should you book a tour or travel independently to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market?

1) beware of the scams at damnoen floating market, 2) double the tour up with a visit to the famous ‘train market’, 3) should you stay overnight at the damnoen floating market, 4) must eats/buys in damnoen floating market, 5) damnoen saduak entrance fee (may 2020):.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Tour

It’s like any Asian market, where local families sell their wares, from fresh coconuts to street food. BUT, they sell them directly from their longtail boats, just as they did over 100 years ago.

damnoen saduak floating market

Damnoen Saduak floating market is 100km west of Bangkok. It takes about 90 minutes to drive there, or 2 hours or so if you take one of the minivans from Bangkok. You can check out exactly where it is on the map below. You have 3 options how to get there, read on to find out how to get to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from Bangkok.

So while it’s often referred to as the ‘the Bangkok Floating Market’, you can see that’s not strictly true, as it requires a 90 minute drive from Bangkok.

To get from Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak market, you have 3 options: The cheapest option, the easiest option, and in my opinion thirdly, the best option – a Damnoen Saduak Floating Market tour.

1) The cheapest option. BUS: From the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok, buses leave every 30 mins from 6.00 am. The journey takes around 2 hours and costs 50 baht (less than $2)

2) The easiest option. TAXI: They won’t go on the meter so you have to use your bartering skills to full effect. Expect to pay around 700 Baht for the return trip, they’ll pick you up from your accommodation around 7 am, drive to the market (about 90 mins) wait for 2 hours or so and drive you back at lunchtime. If you want to take a private car/taxi, book the Bangkok to Damnoen Saduak floating market online and avoid the hassle of arguing about the price .

NOTE: If you want to travel to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market independently, then the best option is to organise your minivan, or private car in advance. You can do that online here .

3) The best option. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Tour . Get picked up in Bangkok, driven to the floating market, enjoy the longtail boat ride, and all without having to barter. It’s only $22 to organise in advance. Book that here . Or, for $90, you can take a private Damnoen Floating Market tour for up to 3 people. You can book that here .

damnoen saduak floating market day trip

Strictly speaking, the opening hours are Daily 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. and the Weekend 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

But realistically, you don’t want to be arriving in Damnoen Saduak any later than 10 am, or the boats start clearing up and going home. In a nutshell, the market is busiest in the morning from 07:00 to 09:00 and is active until noon, try to get there as early as possible!

Damnoen Floating Market tour

Damnoen Floating Market Tour; My  Experience

I’ve been on a Damnoen Floating market tour twice myself. Once when I was broke. Back then I did it independently. And then again when my blog was more successful, I took my mum here on an organised private tour from Bangkok ( I took this one ).

The market itself is great. Everything you’d expect it to be. Endless long boats hawking various fruit, veg and trinkets. Old ladies with a basket on the end of a long wooden stick to take your money and pass you your purchases. It’s a fun day trip with loads of awesome photo opportunities. So get yourself out of bed, dust off the Bangkok hangover , and get over to the Bangkok floating market. You won’t regret it.

If you can afford it, book a tour. Either in a group or privately. It’s faster, more efficient, you make sure you don’t miss anything, they pick you up and drop you off directly from your accommodation in Bangkok. Easy. ( This is the best option for a tour, about $30 and includes the train market too ).

However, I’ve been on both sides of this coin. Broke, and thankfully, not-so-broke. When I was on a shoestring budget, I did it independently and had a great time. You can take a minivan from Bangkok to the town ($5), you can skip going on an actual boat yourself and just walk around the market, soaking up the atmosphere (free!), have some street food, and head back to Bangkok. The whole day could be less than $15, so by all means, do that if you’re trying to save your travel budget.

Cost vrs time?

The downsides, of course, are that you need a strong constitution to ignore all the hawkers giving you the hard sell, it’s hard to know the best parts of the market to access and see etc, and of course, if you want to organise a trip to the train market too, you have to then tag than on.  And in this day and age, it may just work out as cheap to book a tour, with no costs to transfer to the bus station etc.

Damnoen Saduak from Bangkok

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO ON YOUR DAMNOEN FLOATING MARKET TOUR:

They know tourists love this place, so everything is marked up in price. These guys love to make money, and then know the floating market is a must-see for all the tourists. So, if you’re travelling to the floating market independently, then when arrive in Damnoen Saduak people will try to lure you into their boat jetties, there are many of these, not just one.

One way to ‘see’ the floating market is to take a boat ride around it. If you accept a ride in one of these private boats, the trip will last about 1 hour, and then finally at the end of the ride, you reach the market for the last 10 minutes of the hour-long journey. The cost of the boat is approximately 1000 baht per person or 1500 baht per boat. The negotiation is quite hardcore, which is why I recommend organising a tour in advance to avoid stress. Check the tours out here !

Just 20 minutes away is MaeKlong train market . You’ve probably seen the youtube and IG videos go viral when the market is in full-flow, then suddenly everyone pops their chairs and tables away and a train comes steaming through the middle of it all, as soon as it’s passed, the market floods back on and continues on again. Anyway, it’s really cool.

So rather than take a 1/2 day trip on a Damnoen Floating Market tour, make it a full day and include the train market. It’s tough to do independently, but you can organise a tour for cheap here for about $30 .

damnoen saduak floating market day trip

I wouldn’t bother. There’s not so much going on other than the nearby train market, and the floating market itself. Better to base yourself in Bangkok and day trip it to be honest. If you want to escape Bangkok, I’d recommend Kanchanaburi for 2 nights, and then you can also day-trip on a Damnoen Floating Market tour from there too.

If you’ve never tried Thai ‘Kanom Crok’ (fried coconut milk), then buy that here! It’s my favourite Thai snack and it’ll blow your mind, just be careful, they can be piping hot!

Damnoen Floating Market tour

There is no ticket or entrance fee to get into Damnoen Saduak floating market. There are fees to ride in the boat (up to 1000THB if you haven’t already booked a tour), but no ticket to enter the market itself. Don’t be scammed!
