Copenhagen’s Best: The Ultimate Self-Guided Walking Tour of the City

Also, please check for opening times, restrictions, weather, etc., on the days of your trip. We do our best to keep the post updated, but these things can change quickly.

Copenhagen is the vibrant capital city of the Scandinavian country Denmark. It is a city filled with so much energy, making you want to stay forever. The delightful fusion of history and innovation can be seen everywhere in Copenhagen. It is also very compact, with everything so close to each other that you will have so much to explore without having to travel from end to end.

This charming city is filled with picturesque canals, a combination of brightly colored row houses, stylish urban buildings, peppy street art, and of course, cobblestoned streets. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in this enchanting city is to wander around on foot. We enjoyed walking around Copenhagen and wanted to take you all along on our journey with this self-guided walking tour with all the hidden gems we found on our visit.

Copenhagen's skyline from the Stairway to Heaven.

Oh yeah! We have included a nice map marking all the places for you to start using it right away, hassle-free. For convenience, we have made the entire route in a loop so you can start with any location closer to your stay. You need not travel far to just begin your walking tour.

Be prepared to walk a lot, but feel free to use the city’s extensive public transport when the distance between two places is a bit long. I have also suggested where and how you can alternatively choose to use public transport instead of walking. But the entire tour is completely doable only by foot, and don’t forget to take multiple coffee and snack breaks to cozy up in the Hyggelig cafes of Copenhagen.

Why Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Copenhagen?

There are many guided walking tours that you could take in Copenhagen, but this self-guided walking tour is entirely flexible. Also, some of those guided walking tours could be a bit expensive. But I will also link some guided tours you could take during your visit.

Self-guided walking tours are not just budget-friendly but also a way to experience the city in a short time. Pre-booking tours can be a hassle sometimes. I always procrastinate making the bookings till the last moment until I forget or there are no more slots in the time I want. If you are like me, then this is perfect for you.

Good to know!

  • Copenhagen is a bike-friendly city, but it is not recommendable to do this as a bike tour on your own as it could be dangerous if you don’t have the experience. You could always go on a guided bike or a segway tour, where you need not worry about the route and where to stop and park.
  • Danish people are very friendly and nice, but they don’t like it when you walk on their bike lanes. To avoid pissing someone off, always stick to the well-laid pedestrian paths.
  • While crossing a road, look out for speeding cyclists on both sides. Sometimes they just appear out of nowhere, and you will find yourself on the ground.
  • Have fun exploring, and don’t be afraid to stray away from the route. Every place is well connected, and you might just find some new interesting places. (If you find something, do let me know. I will be thrilled to hear all about it).

Tip!  Feel free to start the tour from any of the stops, as the entire route is a loop. Starting at Kongens Nytorv means your first stop is the Instagram-famous Nyhavn (the picture of the colorful houses by the canal is probably the first thing you will see when you search Copenhagen).

The Walking Route

How To Use The Map?

The locations from the walking route are numbered in the map. If required, zoom in and click on a number to view brief details about the location. Click ‘View in Google Maps’ to view the location’s complete details in Google Maps.

If you are planning to do the walking tour early in the morning, start with Nyhavn to escape the crowd, enjoy the views, and capture some great pictures. (Who doesn’t like a good picture?)

Let’s get started!

1. Kongens Nytorv

Kongens Nytorv, which literally means New King’s Square, is a “square” in central Copenhagen. It was built by King Christian V in the 17th century when the city walls were expanded. He had some strategic plans about making this the royal square, and the design was inspired by French architecture.

The lands around the square were later given to wealthy citizens of that time interested in constructing some notable buildings with specific conditions on their facades.

Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen.

No wonder you could spot so many important buildings around the square with stunning architectural styles.

To the southern end, you could spot the Danish Royal Theater. Charlottenborg palace is located to the east and a luxurious 5-star hotel  Hotel D’Angleterre  on the west.

Kongens Nytorv is a noteworthy place to begin our tour (not just because of its proximity to Nyhavn). It could be a convenient location with easy accessibility to its metro station, which runs on all 4 lines.

Psst!   If you are wondering what that little quaint-looking kiosk located north of the square was, you are looking at Copenhagen’s former first telephone booth. It was constructed in a new-baroque style with handmade decorations. Now it is a coffee house. But doesn’t it look cute? The copper roofing gives the classic teal tint adding more charm to it.

Route Guide

Walk towards the eastern side of the square and take the exit towards the colorful houses, and you will reach your next stop at around 250m.

2. Charlottenborg Palace

Before being carried away by Nyhavn’s charm, check out the Charlottenborg Palace at the entrance of the colorful street of Nyhavn. Look around in the opposite direction of the row houses from where the canal starts. You will be looking at the Charlottenborg Palace, which once was the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and currently houses the art gallery museum as  Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

Walk alongside the canal, which starts near the Charlottenborg Palace.

Nyhavn is indeed colorful and has quite a captivating charm. The 17th and 18th-century row houses painted in bright colors are located along the canal side, filled with bars, cafes, and restaurants. This is not just a tourist delight; the locals also enjoy sipping a cold beer on a hot day, which makes it quite expensive.

The buildings of Nyhavn with several boats docked in the canal.

This canal, docked with wooden ships, was once a bustling commercial port where ships worldwide would dock. The harbor was once packed with sailors who frequented the pubs and prostitution houses. Now all the old houses in the area are mostly renovated into restaurants, bars, and cafes. Nyhavn is also one of the main stops of the canal tours.

Tip!   Instead of visiting these cafes and bars priced for tourists, grab a hot dog or beer from the local shops, sit by the canal, and enjoy the views.

Psst!   If you want to capture some postcard pictures in Nyhavn, arriving early is the key. The place gets packed with people even on a cold winter morning once the canal tours open. Plan your visit at least an hour before the first canal tour of the day.

Also, watch your feet while you pose for pictures along the canal side. Falling into the waters, especially during winter, is not a pleasant experience at all. (We actually saw someone fall!)

The buildings of Nyhavn with their cafes. A bike rider is riding a bike on a nearby bridge.

Walk along the canal through Nyhavn on the side of the colorful houses till the end of the street, take a right along  71 Nyhavn Hotel,  and walk further until you reach the Danish Playhouse. The walk from  Nyhavn 17  to the theatre is about 450m.

4. Ofelia Plads and the Danish Playhouse

The Danish Royal Playhouse is an example of the modern architecture of Copenhagen. Do not hesitate to go take a peek at the beautiful cafe. Walk a little further from the Playhouse, and you will reach Ofelia Plads, which is just another square but on the waterfront. You can see great views of the Opera house across the canal to your right.

A large boat docked at Copenhagen's waterfront.

Walk towards the street along the canal on the left side of Ofelia Plads. Keeping walking for another 500m until you reach Amalienborg, the queen’s residence.

5. Amalienborg Palace

Visit the seat of one of the world’s oldest monarchies at Amalienborg Palace. However, only parts of the palace are open to the public. The rest remains the private residence of the Danish Royal family.

Amalienborg Palace has been the royal residence since the major fire which burned down their former residence of Christiansborg Palace.

Try to time your visit to watch the changing of guards ceremony, which happens here every day at 12:00 noon. You could also see the marching of the guards, which starts at 11:30 am from the Rosenborg Castle through the streets of the city ending up at the Amalienborg Palace at 12:00 pm. The length of the ceremony depends on the member of the Royal Palace who is at the palace on the given day. It is quite the site to watch, no matter if any of the royal family members are present or not during your visit.

You could see a building with a big teal-colored dome from the Amalienborg Palace. Walk towards the building for around 250m.

6. Frederik’s Church

You can spot the dome of Frederik’s church from many places as it marks an important landmark of Copenhagen’s skyline. This 18th-century church, also known as the marble church (Marmorkirken), has the largest dome in Scandinavia. It was primarily built in limestone due to budget constraints. But the original plan was to use marble throughout to reflect its name.

The church has the words “HERRENS ORD BLIVER EVINDELIG” inscribed in big golden letterings on the front portico, which means  “The word of the Lord endureth forever.”

It looks pretty stunning with its Rococo interiors. The church is free for the public to enter, so try to get a sneak peek if it isn’t too crowded.

On selected days, it is also possible to climb the dome to get aerial views of the city.

Psst!  I recommend going up the Church of Our Saviour or the Round Tower (which you will see later in the walking tour) as the aerial views of Frederik’s Church dome adorn Copenhagen’s skyline so beautifully.

Frederik's church in Copenhagen.

Photo tip!   If you want to capture a picture of the church without too many people walking on the busy road, walk around the church to the backside, which almost resembles the front. You might have a better chance of getting a nice picture from there.

Roopesh and Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing in front of Frederik's church in Copenhagen.

Walk around 800m to the next stop, St Alban’s Church. Along the way, you can see Denmark’s Design museum, an 18th-century Rococo-style building.

7. St. Alban’s Church

St. Alban’s church is an English-style church built in a Gothic Revival Style. The church was built during the 19th century to serve the growing English population in the city. It remains one of the very few churches in Copenhagen to conduct services in English. The church is free for the public but only open from April to September.

The Saint Alban's Church in Copenhagen.

Walk around the church to see the  Gefion Fountain,  a large fountain near the waterfront. This was constructed as a symbol of a mythical story of the creation of the Zealand island on which Copenhagen is located.

Just next to the fountain, you will find the bridge  Gefionbroen .   Stroll across the bridge and go straight for about 450m along the waterfront to reach the iconic Little Mermaid.

8. Little Mermaid

Visiting Copenhagen and not seeing its famous Little Mermaid would be incomplete. Although it is a very miniature statue, it holds a special place in the heart of the city’s people and tourists. The Little Mermaid statue was inspired by Hans Christians Andersan’s fairytale of a mermaid who waits by the sea daily, longing to see her beloved prince. I am sure everyone would have heard a similar version of the fairytale in their own language.

The little mermaid statue in Copenhagen.

However, this sculpture was commissioned after Carl Jacobsen fell in love with the ballet performance of this fairytale and had this iconic statue created. The Little Mermaid has gone through a lot since she was sculpted. Despite being vandalized many times, the Danish still restored and maintained her for the visitors to enjoy.

Depending on the time of the day, I am sure you will meet many people gathered around the little statue, so try to take a peek before continuing your walking tour.

Continue to walk in the same direction in Langelinie for about 300m until you find a staircase to your left going down to the citadel’s entrance. Climb down the stairs to reach Kastellet.

9. Kastellet

You will now be looking at the Norway Gate on the North side of the Kastellet. It is one of the most well-preserved fortresses in Northern Europe. The fortress is built in the shape of a pentagon, and the aerial view looks beautifully like a star-shaped flower surrounded by a ditch in the same shape. Explore the red-colored brick buildings and wander in the surrounding park to find the Kastelsmøllen. It is a Dutch-style windmill that replaced the original post mill in the 18th century after a storm destroyed it.

A part of the Kastellet in Copenhagen.

This windmill with popping red looks insanely picturesque, surrounded by a blanket of green grass. (Did someone say photo spot?)

Once you have reached the windmill, continue to walk further in the same direction to exit the Kastellet from the King’s gate on the southern side. You will know you have reached closer to the King’s Gate once you see St. Alban’s church at a distance.

A part of the Kastellet in Copenhagen with the Denmark flag.

Once you exit the King’s Gate, walk around 800m to reach Nyboder. Do not hesitate to take a coffee break at Original Coffee or any other Cafe on your way. I found almost every cafe really good, and I didn’t have any preference.

10. Nyboder

Nyboder is a charming row house district that formerly served as an accommodation for Danish Naval personnel and their family. The original construction started in the 17th century and was painted red and white. The current hue of yellow (it looks orange to me, though!) is almost referred to as the Nyboder yellow by the Danish.

A couple of orange colored buildings in Nyboder, Copenhagen.

It has become quite the Instagram spot, and you can easily understand why. I mean, the yellow or orange really does wonders in the background of your pictures. But they are actual residences of people, so please consider their privacy while snapping pictures.

Walk around 500m to reach the King’s garden.

11. Kongens Have

Kongens Have, which means the King’s garden is the garden right outside Rosenborg Castle, which gives it the name Rosenborg Castle Garden. This is one of the Copenhagen’s oldest gardens and was established as a pleasure garden for Christian IV in the 17th century. It was redesigned multiple times until the late 18th century when it was given the French Garden style. It is filled with various small statues all across the park.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers walking in Kongens Have, Copenhagen.

This would be a nice place to have a picnic and capture the Rosenborg Castle’s facade.

The Rosenborg Castle in Denmark.

Walk towards the Rosenborg Castle (of course, that’s the next stop).

12. Rosenborg Castle

Although you cannot visit the castle without an entry ticket or Copenhagen City Card, enjoying the beautiful facade of the 17th-century Dutch Renaissance-style castle is still worth it. It was built as a summer castle for Christian IV, along with the garden (Kongens Have).

Rosenborg Castle also holds the crown jewels, Venetian glass collection, and many portraits, which are now part of the castle museum.

Roopesh from RooKiExplorers posing in front of the Rosenborg Castle in Denmark.

Tip! If you have the time, right behind Rosenborg Castle, across the motorway, is the Botanisk Have which also has a beautiful tropical garden inside a dome-like structure called the Palm House. The park is free to enter, but entry to Palm House needs a ticket (free with the city card).

Walk around 650m to reach the next stop.

13. Torvehallerne

This is a one-stop for fresh produce, local delicacies, and much more. You will find a lot of shops, fish markets, and Danish pastries, making it a nice spot to eat your heart out before heading on to the remaining part of the walking tour. This is also a place loved by the locals, and during the good weather days, all the outdoor tables get filled up in a jiffy.

The market is quite unique with its glass enclosure which gives a unique vibe. Also, coffee lovers head straight to Coffee Collective , which boasts about their ethically sourced beans roasted in-house to make a perfect blend.

I have to be honest here. The next one will be a little further, and many more places are coming right after. It is just 1 km and still doable. But, if you are running short on time or would like to take a break from all the walking, you could ride the subway (Togbus as the Danish call it) from  Nørreport  to  Vesterport , which is just the next stop, and probably will take you a minute or two.

14. Palads Teatret (Nordisk Film Biografer Palads)

The Palads is the big pink-hued building you see when you come out of the subway in Vesterport. It is not very easy to miss because of the pink. It is a cinema with 17 auditoriums which is quite big. The building was Copenhagen’s former central railway station until early 1911. After a massive reconstruction, the former railway station took its new avatar as an entertainment center, the largest in Scandinavia at that time.

Over time it had multiple renovations to what is there at present. Now it is a functioning cinema, and it also hosts ballet and other cultural performances.

Photo tip! The colors of the building are pretty interesting and make for a perfect photo spot.

Kiki from RooKiExplorers posing near Palads Teatret in Copenhagen.

Psst!   Do tag me in your pictures on Instagram. I will be thrilled to see them!

Walk around 400m to the city hall square. On your way, check out the circular  Wallmans Circus Building . It has quite a beautiful facade. Also, right opposite the circus, you can see the Axel Towers, an example of Danish urban architecture.

For the Walking Enthusiasts

If you are up for more walking, you could visit  GammelTorv  and  Nytorv , two other smaller squares. GammelTorv is the oldest square in Copenhagen, and it has a beautiful fountain called  Caritas fountain .   Both the GammelTorv and Nytorv are interconnected. You could also see the  Copenhagen Court House  in Nytorv. The city hall square is around 400m from Nytorv.

15. Rådhuspladsen (The City Hall Square)

I guess, by now, you know what to expect here. Yes, the city hall of Copenhagen was built by Martin Nyrop, who designed the city hall taking inspiration from the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, Italy. You could take a guided tour of the city hall and climb the tower to see the views.

The Radhuspladsen of Copenhagen at night.

Another interesting building around the City Hall Square is the Palace Hotel.

From the City Hall Square, walk around 700m to reach the BLOX. On the way, try to walk past the entrance to Tivoli Gardens. Unfortunately, access to the gardens is not free. Still, they usually have seasonal decorations around the entrance, which can be seen on your way.

The Radhuspladsen of Copenhagen.

BLOX is one of the newest additions to Copenhagen. It is also built in a modern urban style, making it a home to the Danish Architecture Center. It comprises cafes, public spaces, exhibition halls, and many more. The recent construction has transformed a rather boring open area into a waterfront meeting point. This, along with the new bike bridge, is an example of modern architecture aiming at creating a sustainable urban environment.

The BLOX building in Copenhagen.

Psst!  In 2023, Copenhagen has become the world capital of architecture, and many activities will be happening around this area this year. Keep an eye out for the announcements! You might be there to witness some lovely events.

Walk across the Bryghusbroen bridge and continue for about 350m to reach the Black Diamond.

17. Det Kgl. Bibliotek

The National Library of Denmark, also called the Royal Library, is one of the largest libraries in the world. It is also the largest in the Nordic region. The main building, completed in 1999, is called the Black Diamond and is a stunning example of modern Danish architecture. The waterfront facade of the building shines like a diamond reflecting the waters. On a nice clear sunny day, you could see the shimmers coming out so strong that you could hardly look at the building.

I was lucky enough to see it on a clear sunny day (rare in winter), and it was spectacular.

Water reflection on the national library in Copenhagen.

Walk around 600m to visit the stock exchange building of Copenhagen.

Børsen is another architectural marvel, ordered to be constructed by King Christian IV in the 1620s. It is one of the oldest stock exchange buildings in the world. It also beautifully adorns the skyline of Copenhagen with its remarkable spiral tower, which almost looks like a unicorn horn to me. The tower is called  Dragespiret , which means the Dragon’s tower.

The Børsen stock exchange building in Copenhagen.

Walk for around 300m to reach the Christiansborg Palace. I am still in awe, wondering how surprisingly close everything is to each other. I have only experienced this in smaller towns where you can explore almost everything on foot.

19. Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is Denmark’s center of power with a rich 800-year history. It houses the seat of the Danish parliament, the Supreme court, and the Prime Minister’s office. Many parts of the palace are used by the Danish Monarch, like the Royal Reception Rooms, Palace Chapel, and the Royal Stable, which can also be visited by the public.

You must purchase a ticket to enter the palace (free with a Copenhagen City Card). However, it is also worth looking at it from the outside. Multiple parts of the palace were reconstructed quite a number of times, as some parts were destroyed during two severe fires that happened in the past. The architectural style has changed over time, and you can now see a variety of styles over the ages of the Danish era.

The Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen at night.

We have almost come down to the last few places. So don’t give up yet! I know it is a really long walk. Go on for 300m to reach the Nikolaj church.

The Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen at a distance.

20. Kunsthallen Nikolaj

The church, constructed in the 13th century, was one of the oldest churches in Copenhagen. It has a magnificent tower that can be easily spotted from the skyline of Copenhagen. The fire of 1795 gruesomely destroyed most parts of the church. Later, after it was restored, it was officially discontinued as a church. The original building was completely destroyed, including its tower. Still, the new version retained most of the original tower’s designs and was also used as a naval museum. Currently, it is being used as a Contemporary Art Centre with various exhibits.

The Kunsthallen Nikolaj church in Copenhagen.

In around 270m, you will reach Copenhagen’s main shopping area.

21. Strøget

Be prepared to be amazed by a sea of shops in one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe (some claim it to be the longest and some not, but surely it is one of the longest). It is very common in Europe to have car-free shopping streets, and  Strøget  is around 1.1 km long, and you can find a store for almost every brand, many souvenir shops, and food stalls. Being in Denmark, you should, of course, go visit the Lego store, which also has a Lego display of Nyhavn, which is quite realistic.

A Nyhavn lego set in a lego store in Stroget, Copenhagen.

If you visit in summer, you could find yourself hoarded by people as it gets very crowded on a good weather day, but it is worth taking a stroll around this area.

And you have almost made it. The next is the last stop of the walking tour. Walk for about 450m to reach the Round Tower.

22. Round Tower

Round Tower, from 1642, is one of the iconic buildings in Copenhagen. It has an observation deck at the top and, surprisingly, no stairs (Ok, Wait! There are a few at the top, but it is not much). The tower has a wide spiral path where you can reach the top by walking conveniently without losing your breath.

If you are into star gazing, you could also visit the tower on specific days when they offer star gazing nights during winter. Being the last stop and also one of the lovely places to get aerial views of Copenhagen, you could pay a visit to the observation deck for a price of 40 DKK, less than €10 . It is also free if you have a Copenhagen City Card.

Kiki posing in Round Tower, Copenhagen.

Psst!   Try to visit during the golden hour and enjoy the sunset above in the observation deck.

Oh yeah! This is the last stop, but if you did not start at Kongens Nytorv, you could walk for about 800m to reach Kongens Nytorv. Also, walk past the street of  Landemærket,  which has several colorful houses (Photo spot may be).

Kongens Nytorv Metro  is also convenient for taking public transport to anywhere in Copenhagen.

Yes, indeed! Copenhagen is a great biking city with excellent infrastructure. 🙂

My husband and I usually do tour groups, but your guide to do self walking tour of Copenhagen is so detailed and well explained. It definitely seems doable on your own and I’ll be saving this if we ever visit in the future.

The little mermaid statue is what made me want to visit Copenhagen but it looks like there’s plenty to do there !

Yeah, Copenhagen offers a lot more than the Little Mermaid statue. Hope you get to visit it soon! 🙂

I love that you created a self-guided walking tour. This is my favorite way to explore a city and you made it super easy to follow along – thank you!

Happy that you liked our post! Thanks for the compliment. 🙂

love all the churches on this list- beautiful! It makes me laugh when I see the Little Mermaid statue on everything related to Copahagen… it’s a tiny statue but attracts so many tourists!

Yeah, completely agree about the Little Mermaid. It is way too popular. 😀

Copenhagen has always been high on my travel bucket list, and now reading your walking guide has inspired me so much more! I love the different colors, architecture, and exploratory ease the city has to offer. Great blog!

Thanks for the compliment! Happy that you liked our post and hope you get to tick Copenhagen off your list. 🙂

This article was very helpful and inspiring. I liked the way you organized the tour into four sections and covered the main attractions and landmarks of the city, such as the Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, the Tivoli Gardens and the Christiansborg Palace. I appreciate the map and the directions you have provided. Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise with us!

Glad that you liked our post and all the details that we mentioned! Thanks for your kind words! 🙂

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this info. I have a little window of time on my layover in Copenhagen and I was on the fence about going out to explore. (would I get lost, would it be worth it, could I even see anything? etc) Your article has given me the confidence to go out and do it! It’s perfectly detailed and I feel equipped and ready to get my adventure on. 😀

Thank you for the compliments! We’re so glad that you liked our guide. 🙂

As for your question, it completely depends on how much time you have because Copenhagen’s airport is one of the busiest airports. It might take you a while to get through the security check. So, we would recommend having some buffer time.

However, you could still do some part of the walking route and be able to do some sightseeing. You could easily get to the center of the city by train in 15 minutes and start your walking trip right away. If you plan well and have considerable amount of time, it is very much doable. It is definitely worth it! 🙂

Hi could you tell me which spot I’d closest to Copenhot, the outdoor hot tubs? Does your plan go anywhere near them? Thanks so much. X

Hi! CopenHot is not near this walking route, but it is reachable by public transport (about 25 minutes) from Christiansborg Palace. Hope this helps!

We also did lots of food research and watched tons of Chef’s Table, where Rene Redzepi pops up in a couple episodes. He’s also in David Chang’s Ugly Delicious series, where an episode talks to him about his newest Noma pop up in Tulum.

Danish design is also swoonworthy. There are some interior design stores in NYC that carry Danish masters like Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, but not many.

The Copenhagen Tourist Map

There's so much to see and do in Denmark's capital. If you like history and architecture, don't skip Rosenborg Castle where Danish royalty once lived and where the Danish crown jewels glitter on display. If you like to people watch, Mad & Kaffe and The Living Room are some of the top coffee shops in Copenhagen with delicious small bites. Museum lovers shouldn't miss SMK or Glyptoket .

Tivoli Gardens , an outdoor amusement park, is fun for both adults and families while the Little Mermaid is an iconic statue docked just off north Copenhagen's cruise harbor. And if you love exploring local cuisine, make some room for Geranium , Copenhagen's only 3 star Michelin restaurant or  Aamanns , the king of smørrebrød and a classic Danish lunch spot.

Where to Stay in Copenhagen

If you love boutique hotels as much as I do, you're in for a treat. Copenhagen has so many unique, beautiful hotels with stylish Scandinavian furniture, filling breakfasts and cheerful happy hour. Lots of hotels offer a fantastic breakfast, a free drink at happy hour and plenty of lounge space to mingle (perfect if you're visiting solo or want to meet other travelers).

  • For a budget hotel, check out Generator Copenhagen - these are a fancy hostel where you can choose shared or single rooms and the design is really something else. I'm not a hostel person but these are so much fancier than your traditional hostel, I'm not sure what category to put them in! Generator has locations all over Europe and they usually are located right in the center of town - in Copenhagen it's between Downtown and Christiansborg.  Check rates & availability here .
  • For a true Danish hotel experience, stay at Ibsens . Near Torvehallerne and Rosenborg palace, this hotel is a great value hotel with complimentary happy hour, minimalist rooms and a heavenly breakfast of locally sourced Danish produce. Check rates & availability here or read our in-depth review here .
  • For sumptuous, beautifully furnished rooms and first class service, stay at Hotel D'Angleterre . The oldest luxury hotel in Copenhagen, this one is located right in Kongens Nyrtov square close to shopping and sights. It's also THE spot in town for luxury, with its on site restaurant holding 1 michelin star.  Check rates & availability here

What to Eat in Copenhagen

Whether you want comforting Danish classics, new age Nordic cuisine or international cuisine, Copenhagen has a great restaurant scene. Make sure to try local pastries and pick up a bag of local coffee beans - Danes take their bread and coffee seriously!

Copenhagen is one of the most fun cities to explore for gourmands so eat away! I recommend sampling smorrebrod (open faced sandwich), grod (porridge) and aebleflaesk (apple pork) at least once before you leave. While their translated English names don't sound all that fantastic, trust me, they're delicious!

Is Copenhagen Expensive?

In one word,  yes.  The only thing holding me back from packing up my bags and relocating to Denmark is how incredibly expensive the cost of living is.

Here are some tips for visiting Copenhagen on a budget:

Meals hit the hardest - basic foods like hot dogs or ramen can cost $20-25 per person and still leave you hungry. Cheap, delicious eats in Copenhagen tend to be from other cuisines so try Vietnamese, Thai or Indian food while you're in town!

Surprisingly, I actually thought the set menus at fine dining restaurants offered better value for your buck so don't rule those out for your trip. I compiled a list of incredible Danish restaurants here .

Decide which sights and attractions you want to visit and determine if the Copenhagen Card is worth it for your trip. It includes public transportation and lots of the top sights in Copenhagen so it can be quite budget friendly! I break down how we used it in this post HERE and whether it was worth the purchase

Consider traveling in the off season. Airfare dips and in November and December, Copenhagen celebrates Christmas in the coziest way! Check flight deals here .

Try out Airbnb   if you're looking for accommodation on a budget. Danish apartments have some beautiful architecture so you often find a local's place that's beautifully designed and more affordable.

Or, choose a cheaper hotel slightly outside the city center to save on accommodation. Check out my review of Ibsens Hotel , our first hotel spot which was convenient and affordable.

Copenhagen Day Trips

Some of the best things we did was explore outside of downtown Copenhagen. I highly recommend visiting the Louisiana Museum of Art, even if you don't like art - it's a unique space built to house modern art within nature. The area is really scenic, right near the ocean, and even the lake and trees feel sculptural.

Another great day trip is to Hamlet's Castle, called Kronborg Castle in Denmark. We loved seeing the castle's interiors and discovering Holger the Dane in the castle's crypt.

You can also day trip to Malmo, Sweden if you have extra time in Copenhagen (just make sure to exchange some Krona first). Other up and coming Danish cities include Aarhus and Odense.

Getting Around Copenhagen

Danes love riding their bicycles and it feels like pedestrians are the second citizens in Copenhagen! Join in on the fun by renting a bike (hotels usually offer this) or you can find bike shops for day rentals - it will be around $25 USD per day.

We used Copenhagen's subway, buses and trains quite a bit and found them very easy to navigate. For buses, I usually rely on Google Maps on my phone so that I know where to get off. Also don't forget that if you have a Copenhagen Card all public transportation in and around Copenhagen is free!

To get to and from the airport, we took the metro and then airport link. That too, is free with the Copenhagen Card, and pretty stress free with lots of luggage if you travel outside of rush hour.

Enjoy your trip to Copenhagen! If you have any questions about planning a visit to Denmark, let me know in the comments.

Planning a Trip to Denmark – Travel Checklist

Flights | Many European airlines will offer flights to Denmark with a stopover. Flights from New York weren't cheap, but booking in advance helps. Check for  flight deals here .

Travel Tips | We spent a week in Copenhagen and as it was our first time visiting Denmark, we wanted to see the sights. Purchasing the 5-day Copenhagen Card saved us quite a bit on admission prices but do check their list of included attractions here to make sure that it's worth it for your visit.

Accommodation | Lastly, we decided to switch hotels to explore Copenhagen's different neighborhoods . The city is quite large so it was nice to base ourselves in different districts! Hotels get quite expensive (well, Copenhagen as a whole is wallet shattering) so check hotel availability and book in advance. Check here for great deals on accommodation .

Or, give  Airbnb  a go. There are some beautiful Danish apartments available for rent!

Insurance | Our bags were left behind for 3 days due to an airport-wide tech issue in Amsterdam. We knew when we pulled up to the airport that something was wrong because the lines were complete chaos and everyone stood still at the baggage drop off. Once they told us to put our bags through baggage drop, we did it and I immediately had a bad feeling about it – wish we had went carry on only!

Luckily, we had travel insurance  which reimbursed us for out of pocket expenses. Whether your luggage is lost, your phone gets stolen, or you get injured and need to be hospitalized, travel insurance will help when you need it most. Get a  quote for your trip here .

Your photos are beautiful and this article is so informative. What places might you recommend in Copenhagen for first time visitors with small children like myself. My little ones are 1 and 4 years old. I should also add, we’re not long distance walkers.

Hey Nkele – thanks! I’ll caveat this by saying I don’t have kids but I think they would LOVE Tivoli. It’s got amusement park rides, is beautiful and tons of food! Enough for both adults and kids to enjoy :)

So many beautiful photos! I can’t believe how stunningly beautiful Copenhagen is…and its castles, just wow! I need to force my husband that we go there asap!

48 Hours in Copenhagen: The Ultimate Itinerary

Ashley Niedringhaus is an ASME-nominated journalist and author who specializes in crafting bespoke city guides, including a comprehensive guide to Copenhagen for TripSavvy.

copenhagen youtube tour

The food-and-design-obsessed Danish capital is one of those cities you instantly feel like you’d give up your native passport for, and it will have you Googling “apartments in Copenhagen” by the end of the weekend. There’s world-class art, beautiful architecture around every corner, and canals so clean you can (and should!) swim in them—all with an eye toward a greener future; Copenhagen has pledged to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025. To get your 48 hours started on the right two wheels, here’s a sample itinerary packed with expert-led tours, outstanding meals, and time for shopping.

Day 1: Morning

9:30 a.m.: After arriving at Copenhagen Airport , take a short, efficient ride on the city’s driverless Metro to the city center, Indre By, so you can drop your bags at your hotel. The Danish proclivity for rule-following means your room likely won’t be ready until your exact check-in time. If you need a coffee pick-me-up, Coffee Collective has spots across the city, and Prolog Coffee Bar in the Meatpacking District is among the best spot in town.

11 a.m.: Now that you’re settled and have a caffeine fix, you’re probably ready for something other than airplane food. There’s no better introduction to Danish cuisine than Aamanns 1921 , a bright and welcoming space where smørrebrød, the traditional open-faced sandwich, is king.

If you’re ready to hit the ground running or trying to make the most of a few short days in town, a great alternative to a sit-down lunch is to let the good folks at Foods of Copenhagen give you the lay of the land while you fill your belly. Walking tours start at 11 a.m., or join the 11:30 a.m. foodie bike tour. A few seasonal tours, including a festive Christmas foods and market tour, are worth checking out if your visit aligns.

Day 1: Afternoon

TripSavvy / Maria Ligaya

12:30 p.m.: It’s time to get some sightseeing done, and you’ll want to book a tour to make the most of your time. There are a few options beyond the tourist-packed canal boats that leave from Nyhavn. While harbor boat tours are often cheesy, cramped, and filled with reusable headsets, Hey Captain is the antithesis of all that, and we can’t recommend it enough. Small, 12-person tours leave from the city center, and the one-hour Landmarks tour (200 Danish kroner, around $28) or the two-hour Hidden Gems tour (400 Danish kroner, about $55) each offers a relaxed primer to the city filled with humor and insider tips.

If you took the Foods of Copenhagen lunch tour, you’ll end that around 3 p.m. and will want to fill the rest of your afternoon at one of Copenhagen’s great museums or go for a whirl at Tivoli Gardens.

4:30 p.m.: Ready to see what all the buzz about natural wine is about? The Danish capital is among the best in the world for natural wines, and no matter where you are in the city, you’re never too far from a wine bar . Den Vandrette , near Nyhan, is ideal any time of the year, thanks to its cozy indoor space and an outdoor cafe on the water with excellent people-watching. The summertime pop-ups and weekly tastings at Rosforth & Rosforth ’s under-the-bridge location are informational but not fussy, and their stock list is one of the best in Europe.

Day 1: Evening

6:30 p.m.: It’s worth having a few reservations before arriving, especially during the busy summer season. (If you’re wondering where to go, we’ve got you covered .) Across the pedestrian bridge from Den Vandrette and an easy walk from Rosforth & Rosforth is Restaurant Barr . In a dining room that once belonged to Noma (a Michelin-starred restaurant that serves world-class food in 20-course meals), the menu features comfort food inspired by Northern Europe’s beer belt—think German schnitzel, Belgian waffles, and Danish meatballs. Raise a glass from their extensive beer menu (there’s also great aquavit and wine, too) as you say "skål" to a great first day in Copenhagen.

10 p.m.: Head over the bridge to Ruby for a top-notch cocktail. In the 17th century, this part of town was once home to dive bars (called bodegas) for fishermen and farmers but today is in the shadows of Parliamentary buildings. The odds are good that you won’t be able to resist a spin on Ruby’s dance floor before calling it a night.

Day 2: Morning

9:30 a.m.: God morgen, København! If you’re feeling fresh this morning, consider renting a bike from your hotel, or use one of the city’s handy app-based rentals and craft a DIY pastry crawl. Start with a cardamom bun at Juno the Bakery , ride to Hart Bageri for Danish rye bread, and end at Democratic Coffee for their famous almond croissant. If you end at Democratic Coffee, you’ll be right by the Round Tower, the geographical center of Copenhagen.

If you’d rather sit down for breakfast, head to Atelier September for small-batch Swedish coffee and avocado toast, or track down the savory French toast at Mirabelle Bakery .

11 a.m.: It’s shopping time! From minimalist and modern design, hip homewares, and everything from beauty to raincoats, here is where to go for souvenirs and beyond. Hay House is known for its contemporary Danish design and homeware, and its two-story showroom has a bird’s-eye view of the charming Amagertorv square. From Hay House, stop by Georg Jensen for home goods and jewelry loved by the Danish royal family, and step into the Royal Copenhagen flagship store for fine plates and porcelain goods. Don’t miss Illum , the city’s oldest department store dating back to 1891. It’s the kind of place you could spend half a day exploring everything from fashion to furniture.

Randers Handsker has been making butter-soft leather gloves since the 1800s, and Conditori La Glace sells omg-worthy Danish butter cookies in ready-to-gift tins (or linger longer for high tea). Bloom&Bloom sells natural and organic beauty products loved by locals. And Res-Res, which stands for Respect Resources , is home to responsibly sourced homewares, clothing for men and women, and products from local artisans. If you’ve found yourself admiring the dishes used at restaurants around town, they probably came from MK Studio .

If you’d prefer to wander without much of a plan, Jægersborggade 27 is a cooler-than-cool street with local shops and wine bars, and it’s right near Assistens Cemetery, which has a beautiful garden and is the final resting spot for Hans Christian Andersen and other famous Danes.

When hunger strikes, consider popping over to Popl Burger to try Noma’s fermentation on the cheap or try the butter burger at Gasoline Grill —the original location is in a gas station, but there are a few spots around town.

Day 2: Afternoon

3 p.m.: One thing visitors quickly learn is that the Danes are down for a dip any time of year. It can be alarming to see half (or entirely) nude Danes popping out of the canal for a pre- or post-work dip when the weather is warm or sprinting from a hot sauna in a bikini and diving into the chilly waters for a “winter swim.” If it’s summer when you visit, consider grabbing your suit and joining the locals at Islands Brygge , where everyone is in a great mood, sunning themselves and drinking out of the dock. Remember, Copenhagen has generous open-container laws if you want a drink. When the temperatures are colder, head out to Reffin for a dip at CopenHot , where floating hot tubs and saunas await.

Day 2: Evening

Courtesy of Noma

7 p.m.: Tonight, point your focus toward the New Nordic movement. With the budget-friendly lunch of a burger, use tonight’s dinner to splash out at one of the city’s top tables. Reservations will need to be made three to four months in advance for Noma, Alchemist, Kadeau, or Geranium—all of which are bucket list restaurants. But if you’re not a book-months-in-advance kind of traveler, outstanding dinner spots in town that can be booked on shorter notice. AOC , an under-the-radar innovative restaurant set in a 17th-century vaulted cellar, is top among the choices. The baked onion with caviar and elderflower sauce will knock your socks off.

9 p.m.: End the evening with live music at La Fontaine, Copenhagen’s oldest jazz bar. The scene is incredibly vibrant on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, when things get going around 9 p.m. and won’t stop until late into the night.

We dare you to go to your favorite search engine and look up Danish hygge and happiness. It’s super difficult to describe even though many have tried, but easy to experience on a slow-paced walk with a native Dane! So come out and get a better feel and understanding of Danish culture from a native perspective and discover why the world-famous concept of “hygge” is so important and learn how you can bring some of that unique Copenhagen vibe back home with you directly from those who are in the know.

We’ll begin our Hygge & Happiness tour near the characteristic and super charming yellow houses of Nyboder, a famed historical district beloved by the locals for its calm atmosphere. If you want to get to the heart of hygge, it’s critical you get acquainted with your group and your native guide for the tour, where everyone should feel welcome and free to ask any questions you might have about hygge, happiness or something completely unrelated.

We take our time as we walk through the small streets of Nyboder. You will quickly notice that the tour takes you through some of the oldest parts of Copenhagen, where you’ll experience hidden gems in the form of cobblestone filled streets, timber-framed houses, and green refuges of calm amongst the urban sprawl. Often you will take different unexpected turns that just scream hygge, as you get to experience that old world charm. All of them are great examples of how hyggelig our city can be if you just take the time to wander.

Hygge has to be pleasurable too. So this Copenhagen walking tour is not just about seeing and experiencing, but also tasting! So get ready to get all of your senses tingling as we sample some Danish delights from world-renowned pastries and delicious Danish flødeboller to a cup of liquid joy. It’s just not about eating, but experiencing it together! Before taking your first bite or sip, don’t forget to tune in as your guide tells you everything about these fantastic yummy treats’ significance for Danish hygge culture and how they really play into it for Danes of all ages.

At times, when we’re getting too overwhelmed by the urban sprawl, we’ll ditch it altogether and escape into beautiful green havens or tucked-away alleyways that ooze with history to relax. Here, settle in and hear the spectacular and dramatic stories of how Copenhagen came to be (hint: It includes former kings with delusions of grandeur, mental insanity, and inappropriate love triangles just to name a few of the contributing factors!). All with a stunning backdrop of Instagram-worthy sights as well as miniature and grand castles that provide jaw-dropping views.

Experience how we make it all come alive, as we explain why some people say Denmark is utopian and taken right out of a fairy-tale by showing and telling you how the local culture and our policies contribute to Danes being among the happiest people in the world year after year. Conclude the tour with your group at the cutest café in town with a sit-down with a liquid cup of joy.

Stay as long as you like, or, if you feel like exploring further, your guide would be more than happy to share some of their best recommendations for your stay here in the city.

Sign up for this tour to unlock immediate happiness & hygge 🙂 I went on the tour during my first full day and I felt like it rooted me in the history of the city, and our tour guide’s storytelling skills were fantastic. The not one but two delicious pastries and beverage we enjoyed on our walk was an added bonus. Highly recommend!

Mr. Paul H. from The United Kingdom traveled on 7 May. 2023:

Really good experience from people who love and live in the area. Friendly and great value for money, even in the cold weather it felt like an easy walk.

Mrs. Sonya G. from The United States of America traveled on 25 Apr. 2023:

Brought our kids on the tour (11 month and 3 year old). The group was flexible enough to allow us to listen to the experience as well as attend to the needs of our little ones. Learned a lot about copenhagen. Great context and understanding of the culture and history.

Ms. Heather F. from Luxembourg traveled on 11 Apr. 2023:

Highly recommend! As a first time visitor to Copenhagen, I appreciated this opportunity to walk around the city, learn about its history and culture, and sample some local treats. I left the experience with a better idea of the places I wanted to visit while I was there.

Mrs. Pamela V. from Germany traveled on 28 Mar. 2023:

Such a fun way to see many attractions with a great guide and intro to Danish culture. The stops for local pastry, chocolate treat and drink were fantastic. Thank you so much.

Ms. Tamara T. from The United States of America traveled on 16 Mar. 2023:

This experience attracted me a lot based on the description and the reviews, and my expectations have totally been fulfilled! A nice guide, a nice group of people, a pleasant walk, a lot of interesting information and delicious pastries. It was the beginning of my trip in Copenhagen and it could not have started better!

Mrs. Maurissa H. from Canada traveled on 8 Mar. 2023:

Awesome tour that takes you around the city with very fun facts about Copenhagen. Fun to do some stops along the way for treats and tea!

Ms. Megan J. from The United States of America traveled on 28 Feb. 2023:

Like so many of the other reviews, the tour is one of a kind. Amalie was our guide, she was kind, warm, gave us great information in a way that was easy to digest and learn. It was pouring rain a lot of our tour and she did a great job keeping our attention. This is a wonderful tour to learn about so many thing I would not have on my own or on an another tour. I really appreciated Amalie’s willingness to tell us about her experiences and life in Denmark. I woudl highly recommend taking this tour at anytime during your stay- you will learn so much. We had about 10 people, it was a lovely group. The meeting spot was very easy to find and we included drinks and warm drinks were perfectly timed and so yummy. THANK YOU!

Mr. Ádám H. from Hungary traveled on 19 Feb, 2023:

It was a great experience for us and it was the best decision we made in Copenhagen by far. Jens is a friendly, excellent tour guide and storyteller. He told us a lot of interesting things about Danish culture, history, Hygge life and introduced the most important places in Copenhagen. I really liked that it was a comfortable, affordable program, where we didn’t have to rush, but we still managed to get to the most important places of this wonderful city in 3.5 hours.

Mrs. Lisa E. from the United Kingdom traveled on 16 Feb, 2023:

We had a wonderful time on this Hygge walking tour of Copenhagen. Our guide for the day, Jam, was such a nice guy and was really passionate about his hometown. We did this tour during the holiday season and so most of the normal stops were closed. However, Jam went out of his way to make the tour just as special for us and made sure we didn’t miss out on our snacks and hot drink. I left this tour feeling like I learned so much about Copenhagen and the lifestyle. I would highly recommend this walk for someone visiting the city!

Ms. Elena T. from France traveled on 13 Feb, 2023:

I have been really busy at work prior to coming to Copenhagen and have not had the time and energy to read up on the city. Luckily I took this tour and the guide Kristian was fantastic! Very passionate about Copenhagen, knowledgeable and a great communicator he made me feel at ease straight away. We had time to cover major landmarks, chat and had coffee with delicious danish pastries. I fell in love with the city, it’s many hidden gems, history and of course hygge. Kristian also shared some recommendations on where to eat and what else I could visit. Definitely go for the tour!

Ms. Lauren J. from the United States of America traveled on 10 Feb, 2023:

Would highly recommend this walking tour to anyone wishing to get a unique and local insight into life in Copenhagen. Great value, pace and company!

Ms. Annika S. from Germany traveled on 8 Feb, 2023:

I really enjoyed the tour led by Pauline today. Although I had walked through some of the places she showed us- her personal knowledge, connection to the area and explanations about Danish history and culture made it more meaningful. I felt more connected to the area – something that would have been impossible to achieve on my own. The sweets were so enjoyable to eat, particularly the cinnamon scroll! Although it was raining and I felt freezing a lot of the time, Pauline’s upbeat energy made me appreciate the Hygge way of life. Thanks for an amazing time!

Mr. AJ W. from the United States of America traveled on 8 Feb, 2023:

Our guide was Sandra and we had a great time with her. We live in an area that has long cold winters and became interested in Hygge to see if we could make it more enjoyable. Of course we read about Hygge, and how to try and incorporate it in to our lives; but talking to a Dane to try and understand the true meaning and to see some Hyggelig locations was our main goal. We definitely achieved this. We got a lot of background information, history, and went to some great places for food and drinks. Also, Sandra gave us a lot of recommendations of places to check out after, which we did, and they were excellent! If you are looking to learn more about the concept of Hygge beyond just burning candles and drinking mulled wine, this is a great way to do it.

Mrs. Betsy R. from the United Kingdom traveled on 5 Feb, 2023:

The Hygge and Happiness tour was definitely a highlight of our time spent in Copenhagen. Sandra was very kind and knowledgeable and we left with a completely different view of Copenhagen and the premise of Hygge. The treats were amazing too! We made sure to get more during our other days here 🙂 Would highly recommend!!

Mr. Varun S. from Ukraine traveled on 2 Feb, 2023:

Mie led a very thoughtful, personalized tour. We got to experience a lot of culture of Copenhagen, and had local pastries and drinks along the way. I left the tour feeling happy, warm, and content – I guess that’s what you call hygge.

Mr. David T. from Australia traveled on 30 Jan, 2023:

It was a great experience for us. We had the best decision in Copenhagen to apply. Jens is a friendly, excellent tour guide and storyteller. He told us a lot of interesting things about Danish culture, history, Hygge life and introduced the most important places in Copenhagen. I really liked that it was a comfortable, affordable program, you didn’t have to rush, but you managed to get to the most important places of this wonderful city in 3 hours.

Mr. David M. from the United Kingdom traveled on 25 Jan, 2023:

Jam was a great guide and went the extra mile on Christmas Day when most of the places to take guests were closed. A unique trip around Copenhagen, hitting some of the main tourist attractions but with an insight that made it fresh and interesting. It was great to hang out with Jam for the morning, felt like friends by the time we left.

Ms. Bethany O. from Canada traveled on 21 Jan. 2023:

We loved our half day tour with Kristian. It was a great way to start our trip! He provided socio-cultural context that we couldn’t have attained on our own. The tour was a nice blend of history and current events in Denmark. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour! Kristian also gave us personal recommendations at the end- those that we were able try, were excellent! We highly recommend this tour!

Mr. Jason A. from the United States of America traveled on 17 Jan. 2023:

Loved this experience. We got to see a new part of Copenhagen and I loved that we could simply be in quiet areas of the city. I would highly recommend if you are just arriving into Copenhagen or trying to do something outside the commercial parts.

Mr. Fred J. from the United States of America traveled on 15 Jan. 2023:

Kristian was a great host, unfortunately we didn’t have the best weather for our walk but that only helped the tour feel more hyggelig – the definition of which was explained brilliantly. Kristen knew a lot about what he was discussing, told lots of little stories and all in a great way. Very nice walk around the centre that morning. Make sure you go visit the little toilet!!

Ms. Natalie P. from France traveled on 11 Jan. 2023:

Went on the tour with Kim who made it special with many unique stories about his life in Copenhagen. He’s obviously an expert and it was great to hear about his love for the city. Excellent tour!

Mrs. Melissa R. from Australia traveled on 3 Jan. 2023:

Our guide, Christian, was very lovely and gave us a lot of information and insight into Copenhagen and hygge. We learned a lot and are embracing hygge back at home!

Mr. Gilbert H. from the United Kingdom traveled on 26 Dec. 2022:

Fantastic experience – you really feel like you’re just talking a walk with a knowledgeable local friend rather than having an inorganic travel experience.

Mr. Logan D. from the United States of America traveled on 18 Dec. 2022:

A unique tour that combines history, food, and culture all in one. Very much enjoyed our guide Kristian who was friendly, funny, and genuinely interested in connecting with us. Also is a great way to meet other people if you’re solo-traveling like I was.

Ms. Samantha G. from the United States of America traveled on 11 Dec. 2022:

Great tour that left me feeling more connected to a city that I’m a stranger in. Our guide, Kristian, was friendly and passionate about Copenhagen. Glad I decided to do it!

Mr. Weixiang M. from Southern Korea traveled on 4 Dec. 2022:

I had a private tour with Jens as it was probably off season. I thoroughly enjoyed my walk with him and our discussions on what exactly is hygge and how the Danes are one of the happiest people in the world. He was friendly, had a lot of knowledge and experience to share with me and I was very thankful for his time. I would highly recommend it to anyone who does not want a run of the mill tour of Copenhagen.

Mr. Jason B. from the United Kingdom traveled on 28 Nov. 2022:

Jens was a fantastic host / guide! He was both super warm, and very knowledgeable! As a first time visitor to Copenhagen, I was able to see parts of the city that I would not have seen otherwise, along with getting a good history lesson about the city, and of course we learned all about “Hygge” and ways in which it comes to life in Danish culture! Highly recommend!

Mrs. Sarah G. from the United States of America traveled on 19 Nov. 2022:

This tour was so much fun. It was informative and entertaining. Jens had a list of tips available for other things to do in Copenhagen as well. He was very knowledgable on the city, its history, and he had a great sense of humor. It was so much fun to walk through Copenhagen and learn about the local culture and specifically hygge. He went above and beyond to make sure everyone got out of the tour what they wanted. And even spent a little bit to extra time. I definitely recommend this tour.

Mr. Brian L. from the United States of America traveled on 14 Nov. 2022:

Kim was warm and made us feel welcome the moment we rendezvoused with the group to begin the tour. He was very knowledgeable about Danish culture and all things Hygge—as we now are thanks to this wonderful tour. He was patient and congenial with our questions. We laughed a good bit and got to know our fellow Hygge sojourners as we trekked through the city center from one Hygge locale to the next. If you’re coming to Copenhagen to learn more about Hygge in order to embrace the “happy” living mindset—then do take this tour and immerse yourself in it. Kim is a great host and Hygge master—and that is no small feat when leading a diverse group—yet he had us all laughing in no time. We really enjoyed this tour and have commented on it often in the past week. I wish we could take it again for the first time.

Ms. Ronja H. from Germany traveled on 8 Nov. 2022:

We did the tour with Sofie who was a lovely guide. We truely enjoyed the Hygge and are thankful for all the little details and info on Copenhagen. I would definitely recommend.

Mrs. Carrie B. from the United States of America traveled on 5 Nov. 2022:

Pauline was lovely and shared a lot of personal stories about Copenhagen, which I really appreciated! It’s certainly not the typical scripted tours where you see the main tourist attractions and hear the same things you probably could have googled on your own. I could feel her enthusiasm and love for the city, as well as being a guide to others. Really enjoyed the experience!

Ms. Luisiana K. from Singapore traveled on 1 Nov. 2022:

Great experience! We got to know a lot more about Copenhagen’s culture, and even the welfare system better thanks to Christian’s passionate story telling. Overall wonderful experience!

Ms. Linh K. from Vietnam traveled on 26 Oct. 2022:

The tour was well structured and informative around the main theme – Hygge with different perspectives, which helps you see the insights of what’ve made up the Hygge culture among the Danes. Camilla and Sandra, the 2 fun and loving girls who were my guide today made the tour so fun and incredibly warm for me. Totally recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the Danes and their lifestyle.

Ms. Katherine W. from The Netherlands traveled on 22 Oct. 2022:

Mr. Brian P. from United States of America traveled on 19 Oct. 2022:

Jam was a fantastic host and shared so many interesting nuggets about danish culture and history with us throughout the tour. Lots of funny anecdotes and delicious treats throughout. Felt like I was hanging out with a friend showing me around his neighborhood. He also took the time to give us personal recommendations after the tour for cool things to do in Copenhagen. Highly recommend.

Ms. Shara H. from the United Kingdom traveled on 15 Oct. 2022:

Our guide was incredibly insightful and was able to share stories and histories of Hygge in the most heartfelt and articulate way. Would definitely recommend it to everyone!

Mrs. Hailey B. from Canada traveled on 11 Oct. 2022:

We spent nearly 5 hours in the company of Jam and I will count it as one of the most special holiday memories I have ever had. My friend Emma and I booked the tour and did not know what to expect. What we experienced was warmth, knowledge, humour, hygge and delicious danish treats. We felt part of Copenhagen life and culture instead of passing tourists and Jam gave us a brilliant mixture of relaxed wandering with packed content. I could not recommend people experience this more. Every star is well deserved and I have spoken about it to all my friends as the highlight of our visit. Jam even recommended places to eat and after the tour we went back and visited some places that we would not have found on our own. Unique and so Hygge!!

Ms. Joi W. from the United Kingdom traveled on 9. Oct. 2022:

Jam is a fantastic host and guide. It was a lovely way to spend the morning. Definitely felt the hygge and as though I was hanging out with a group of friends I’d known forever. Got to see hidden gems and Jam gave us a long list of personal recommendations. We even stayed an hour after the tour ended just chatting. Had I not had to rush off to another tour, I think our group might have chatted long into the afternoon.

Ms. Mary Katherine from the United Kingdom traveled on 8 Oct. 2022:

We had Kristian as out tour guide who was fantastic. Very friendly and engaging. I learnt so much about the history of the city but also about the policies and spirit of it now which is just as important. Sandra and Camila (a trainee guide) were absolutely wonderful! We had a small group of three people and the weather was rainy, but they made the whole experience wonderful from start to finish and we didn’t miss a thing. They were both very friendly and engaging, and the whole thing flowed smoothly; we all ended up talking as friends. The stops we made for snacks along the way were delicious and the stories were wonderful.

Mr. Rob N. from United States of America traveled on 25 Sep. 2022:

Mie and Christian were excellent guides, giving us a great trip through some beautiful, quieter parts of the city while also hitting many of the major sites. Both were incredibly personable and able to connect with the group at large as well as with each person individually. The pastries and sweets were delicious as well! It’s a great opportunity to get to know Copenhagen and the Danish way of life much better.

Ms. Lauren T. from Canada traveled on 19 Sep. 2022:

A great intro tour for anyone new to Denmark! Jam was very informative and friendly and happy to answer any questions. We had a small group of 5 people and this made for some wonderful conversations about different cultures and what makes Denmark unique. I didn’t find it particularly focused on hygge but really enjoyed it anyway and think it’s great value for money. Thank you Jam!

Mrs. Shirley W. from United States of America traveled on 16 Sep. 2022:

What a wonderful tour! We covered a lot during our time, and I really appreciated the pacing (some walking, some sitting & pastry eating, repeat…). There was also a very comfortable vibe set by our guide Sandra: she made me feel so welcome & helped create a sense of companionship for our group (with people from US, Canada and Australia). Even when it started hailing on us (!!), Sandra adjusted quickly & we ended up feeling closer because we went through it together (one woman offered me her disposable poncho & saved my day!). I feel like I got a true sense of hygge & am so grateful.

Mrs. Jacqui O. from France traveled on 12 Sep. 2022:

Kim was my tour guide and he was great! He had a wealth of knowledge to share about Copenhagen history that I really appreciated. It was very hygge to leisurely walk around Copenhagen and absorb details of its background and come about while enjoying the delicious Danish pastries. Highly recommend

Ms. Beth P. from The United Kingdom traveled on 5 Sep. 2022:

The Hygge and Happiness tour was wonderful. I thought it was quite expensive, more so than e.g. a bus tour, and before I went I was unsure if it would be worth it, but it was. It was so much better than a standard bus tour would have been. Sandra was a great host, very enthusiastic and passionate and clearly really loved what she was doing. She took us to little back streets that may not be one of the “big” tourist attractions in Copenhagen, but which I felt gave us a much better sense of the real Copenhagen, not just the one for tourists, and along with Sandra’s little anecdotes, brought it to life. And I thought all the sweet treats were a nice touch!

Mrs. Alyssa M. from Canada traveled on 4 Sep. 2022:

This was a great experience! I did all of the major tourist attractions on my own, but through this experience I was able to get a local’s perspective and learn a lot in the process. Excellent conversation and a truly excellent host!

Ms. Masha O. from The Netherlands traveled on 3 Sep. 2022:

Mrs. Mary G. from Australia traveled on 29 Aug. 2022:

My walking tour of Copenhagen to experience Danish Hygge was a truly delightful experience. Our leader, Sandra, was warm, friendly, charming and witty. She was an excellent guide, with lots of local knowledge. She showed us some interesting and historic neighbourhoods, including some well-kept local secrets. We ate Danish comfort food, and gained a genuine sense of what ‘hygge’ means for Danes. I really enjoyed Sandra’s personal anecdotes, because they made me, a tourist, feel like a local for a few minutes.

Mr. Jason S. from United States of America traveled on 28 Aug. 2022:

Wonderful tour, took our 2 year old daughter and she was stimulated by the city (and a nap) while we learned a lot about Copenhagen, Denmark, Danish, and Hygge. Highly recommend!

Mrs. Jennifer P. from United States of America traveled on 27 Aug. 2022:

Ms. Mariel K. from Germany traveled on 26 Aug. 2022:

Jam made us feel immediately welcome. We saw parts of the city we would not have seen on our own and got local tips. The snacks were tasty and taught us more about Danish cuisine.

Ms. Marjan B. from The Netherlands traveled on 25 Aug. 2022:

This was a great experience! Our guide Jam told a lot of things: common things about the history of Copenhagen (buildings, kings, etc), the way how people are living in Danmark and especially in Copenhagen (education, healthcare, etc). He told a lot of personal stories to let us get a better understanding of that way of living and how a local pratices a Hyggelig life. On the way we stopped for nice sweet treets and a hot drink. I really enjoyed it!

Ms. Sophie L. from The United Kingdom traveled on 23 Aug. 2022:

Kim gave a really good tour – he was friendly, lots of laughter and spoke of personal stories and experiences. It felt like having a tour by an old friend. TAK!

This was a great tour. Our host was Kim. He offered amazing insight that was unique. He was so friendly and knowledgeable – so funny too! Great value and experience. Ms. Lisa H. from Canada traveled on 17 Aug. 2022:

The tour was a very hygge experience with a small group of people and a very engaging guide. It was the perfect way to be introduced to Copenhagen and the Happiness and Hygge culture in Denmark!

Ms. Stephanie J. from United States of America traveled on 14 Aug. 2022:

I really enjoyed Pauline as our guide. She was so friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. I liked how this tour is set up with a small group and not a script description of places we saw. Also we could ask lots of questions and Pauli e was more then happy to answer them and tell us stories that related. Meeting Pauline was a great start to our vacation here in Copenhagen.

Mrs. Stephanie A. from United States of America traveled on 12 Aug. 2022:

This was such a fantastic experience! I followed the recommendation of other commenters and did this at the beginning of my trip. I highly recommend! It’s such a unique and special look into such a special destination. It was a great way to see the sights, get local insights/history, and try some things I might now have otherwise tried! Mie was so friendly and so informative. I loved it!

Ms. Emerson K. from Australia traveled on 9 Aug. 2022:

This was a lot of fun! I got to see/learn about some bigger attractions, but really experience parts of the city I likely wouldn’t have discovered on my own or on a “touristy” tour.

Mrs. Simron O. from Ukraine traveled on 5 Aug. 2022:

Thoughtful tour, small group, great overview of the city with personalized and local perspective. I learned about hygge and I learned more about what it means to be Danish! Good experience for solo travelers to get some social time too.

Mr. John S. from England traveled on 3 Aug. 2022:

Excellent tour! Really got to know the city and definitely loads of things we wouldn’t have known ourselves. Come hungry, in particular for sweets 😉

Mr. Peter H. from Australia traveled on 3 Aug. 2022:

Enjoyed the walk very much. Our guide, Jens, was very knowledgeable with lots of interesting anecdotes, many of them quite personal, about his life family and friends. He is well read and could address, thoughtfully, topics ranging from politics through religion and the antics of partying high schoolers and college students! Also knows well the restaurants, bars and neighborhoods worth visiting.

Mrs. Corrie P. from United States of America traveled on 2 Aug. 2022:

This is a great tour that felt very personal led by a native Danish woman. She gave great insights about the area, history and culture. It felt like I was waking along with a friend from Denmark and not touristy at all. She did a great job illustrating “Hygge” even though it’s a concept that you can more experience and feel rather than explain. She even followed up with some local recommendations and Hygge information to my email after the tour based on my personal needs for my trip in Denmark.

Ms. Jennifer L. from United States of America traveled on 1 Aug. 2022:

This was a great experience. I learned so much about Copenhagen and Danish culture and customs. Mie was a great host and I would definitely recommend this tour. All the treats were delicious and the cafe where we ended our tour was funky and had yummy drinks.

Mrs. Candace W. from United States of America traveled on 24 Jul. 2022:

Jacob was an exceptional tour guide! There was nothing he did not know about this beautiful city and he delivered it in a fun and interactive way! I cannot recommend this tour enough.

Ms. Kristen T from Canada traveled on 17 Jul. 2022:

This tour far exceeded my expectations. Our tour leader was fantastic, he really knew his stuff and could answer questions on a whim. He made it a very personable experience and really read the group, making it relevant for the young group we were. The experience was so good that 3 of the 5 of us signed up to join the 4th on the full day tour, and while I was unfortunately not able to join in as well, I certainly wanted to! When we found out that our tour guide was leading another tour tomorrow, 3 of us signed up for that one right on the spot! I loved it. Would definitely recommend.

Mr. Brad F. from United States of America traveled on 14 Jul. 2022:

Jacob took us on a great & very informative tour around the city. The weather was against us but this didn’t stop our enjoyment of the tour. It was a great mix of local history, every day danish life and of course hygge. The three hours went really quickly and this was due to the great variety of sites and local treats along the way. We have two young children (7 & 4yrs old) and Jacob accommodated them very well – inclusive of answering tricky questions and holding hands. Overall the tour exceeded our expectations.

Ms. Lauren G. from Australia traveled on 11 Jul. 2022:

Jacob was a wonder tour guide. Even in the morning rain, he made all of us excited and really encouraged a flow of discussion about the culture of Copenhagen. His insight was really valuable and interesting. As a solo traveller, I was happy I got to meet other solo travelers. We even met up later at a restaurant Jacob recommended for dinner (which was of course delicious).

Mrs. Debbie S. from United States of America traveled on 8 Jul. 2022:

We thoroughly enjoyed our morning stroll through the beautiful streets and parks and hidden alleys of Copenhagen in search of Hygge. And we found it! Jacob did a great job telling us about life in Denmark and why everyone is so darn happy. The tour was full of information we could use for the remainder of our stay – and there were treats along the way. Who could ask for more?

Ms. Sughanda P from Canada traveled on 5 Jul. 2022:

Jacob was a lovely tour guide and I really enjoyed joining the Hygge and Happiness tour. It was nice to interact with a local and get to know why Denmark is such a special place. The small group allowed everyone to get to know each other which made it an enjoyable tour. The danish pastries and treats we tried were delicious and it was very hyygelig to end at a cafe and chat with everyone.

Mr. Trey J. from England traveled on 2 Jul. 2022:

Great hygge tour with our guide, Christian. Our family appreciated his local knowledge growing up in Denmark. Highly recommend the small group format that allows real interaction.

Mrs. Rebecca S. from United States of America traveled on 30 Jun. 2022:

Do you want a deeper understanding of Danish culture? If so, this gem of a walking tour is for you. Our guide Pauline beautifully and patiently explained Danish culture in an intimate way allowing for fascinating discussions. The members of our small group had the opportunity to ask any question and we left with a better understanding of what makes this country so remarkable. I highly recommend this experience. If you can, ask for Pauline. She was utterly delightful and very knowledgeable.

Ms. Nadia K. from Canada traveled on 28 Jun. 2022:

James was our primary tour guide today, and he was so friendly and wonderful! (Helena was also supplementing the tour and was training) James took us to his favorite places which truly gave a sense of hygge and gave us a local’s perspective on the city. The baked goods were also super yummy! It was also very easy to find them at the beginning and they gave great recommendations at the end for drinks and restaurants. Would highly recommend this tour!

Mr. Tim K. from Canada traveled on 27 Jun. 2022:

We had a wonderful time on this tour. Our guide Jam’s a gem. He made sure that we felt welcome, included and valued. He took a genuine personal interest in every member of the tour. His wry sense of humor kept me interested and chuckling throughout the fascinating 3-hr tour. His insight & knowledge of Copenhagen and Danish culture taught me a lot that I don’t think I could have learned otherwise. The treats along the way were scrumptious and superlative. Our tour mates were, without exception, warm, interesting, friendly & great to be along with. This was a thoroughly delightful tour. Highly recommended.

Ms. Veronica C. from United States of America traveled on 26 Jun. 2022:

I really enjoyed taking a walk off the beaten path, and visiting a few different places in Copenhagen. Not only was our friendly host Jam completely inclusive and kind, I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with everyone I met in our group. Jam was kind, sweet, friendly and really made an effort to chat with everyone and answer everyone’s questions. I cannot recommend this tour enough. In fact, if I had more time I probably would’ve joined another one of their other many tours. I loved Copenhagen and this walking tour solidified my love for this city. Oh, and the treats we had along the way were amazing! I’m always down to stop for a pastry and coffee.

Mrs. Kristi K. from United States of America traveled on 25 Jun. 2022:

Exactly what we were looking for! A comfortable and casual tour with lots of opportunity for questions about culture and Hygge in Copenhagen. Perfect distance for a casual pace, many sights just off the main road, and local expertise and recommendations that made the tour five stars.

It is one of tours that you actually want to repeat. Team was fantastic, everything was well organized and arranged, communication skills – just great. The tour itself is really greatly planned with all the stops and chats. In the end you realize not to have noticed that 3.5 hours you’ve been wandering across the town with strangers, cause it felt so nice.

Ms. Dionne U. from Australia traveled on 23 Jun. 2022:

Enjoyable walk with Mie and Helena. Mie gave us a young person’s perspective of Danish life and the food treats we got along the way were delicious. The pace was leisurely, even for a walking tour.

Mrs. Molly N. from Canada traveled on 21 Jun. 2022:

Jacob and Christian were awesome guides! They were friendly and knowledgeable and were open to all of our questions. The treats along the way were delicious and they were always offering advice and recommendations for how we could spend the rest of our trip!

Mrs. Shelby A. from United Kingdom traveled on 20 Jun. 2022:

We really enjoyed this experience. Jam shared a lot of history and insight into hygge and Danish culture. The walking tour showed points of interest we may not have seen otherwise. And we got to try the signature Danish birthday treat. It was a good use of our time in Copenhagen.

Ms. Deepti T. from India traveled on 17 Jun. 2022:

It was so worth it! Jamshed, our guide, was friendly and engaging, open to questions and full of insights and tips for us. Very nice eating experiences were picked and right from the start we knew we were right in picking the tour. It made our trip that much more authentic!

Ms. Parita C. from India traveled on 15 Jun. 2022:

We had such a wonderful time walking around Copenhagen with Jamshed. The experience made us deep-dive into the Hygge culture as we explored some simple gems in the city while eating delicious pastries, artisanal chocolates, and award-winning cakes! Jamshed also gave us great recommendations for restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and bars! We’d highly recommend the experience!

Mr. David K. from Canada traveled on 12 Jun. 2022:

This tour was an excellent adventure through the beautiful quaint parts of Denmark. Our tour guide always kept our attention by sharing interesting myths, stories, and fun facts. Once the tour was over, he inquired with us about our future travels assisting in any way he could with recommendations, must-sees, and the cool spots. Would definitely recommend this tour to any traveler in Copenhagen!

Mr. Benjamin S. from United States of America traveled on 11 Jun. 2022:

We had an amazing time on this tour, an absolute must for a visit to Copenhagen. Our guide spoke excellent English and we got a very in depth look into the history and culture of the city. Plus the pastries were delish!

Ms. Jacinta from the United Kingdom traveled on 8 Jun. 2022:

Pauline was my lovely host and she was super friendly, straight away creating “hygge” for the rest of the experience ….I loved this experience because I wanted a tour with more focus on Danish culture, which is exactly what I got! Lots of insight into everyday life (and felt more than comfortable asking my own questions), cool little stories of well known Danish and also back stories that explains some danish culture and practices today. Highlights were the stories, the bakery visit and the beautiful places Pauline took us to (some very cute and charming and hyggelig streets). Thanks also for the recommendations Pauline!

Mrs. Grace M. from Canada traveled on 4 Jun. 2022:

Friendly tour by Pauline who was very smiley and knowledgeable. We were lucky we were only in a small group and she spent time talking to each of us individually as well as a group. The tour route was great and we saw some places/ streets we wouldn’t have visited on our own. Also, it wasn’t you’re every day basic route where here’s the museum, here’s the library. We went to a bakery and also had a chocolate tasting which were both amazing. Thanks Pauline!

Ms. Adriana P. from United States of America traveled on 2 Jun. 2022:

Jam was a wonderful guide and showed us Copenhagen in a way we would not have seen otherwise. He went above and beyond to show us the city he loved, and even sent us his personalized list of recommendations after the tour. definitely would recommend!

Mrs. Brit H. from United States of America traveled on 25 May. 2022:

It was a fun morning! The chocolate tasting was my favorite part. And the cafe and conversation at the end. I enjoyed learning more about Hygge and why they’re voted one of the happiest countries in the world. A lot to take back home to carry over in the states! (:

Ms. Jane T. from United States of America traveled on 21 May. 2022:

The tour was thoughtful and genuine. We loved walking around the city and seeing/learning things that we wouldn’t have without a local. The bakery, chocolate shop and cafe were very quality and showcased some finer things. Jami had great energy, was a lovely guide and active local in Copenhagen so his insider knowledge was great!

Mrs. Melissa F. from United States of America traveled on 15 May. 2022:

We had a great time learning about Copenhagen and Danish culture with Jam as our tour guide! Jam was very personable, informative, and easygoing. He created a wonderful group dynamic and had plenty of recommendations for not only Copenhagen, but also Berlin (our next stop). Thanks for this experience!

Ms. Christin C. from Australia traveled on 2 May. 2022:

What a fantastic way to get to know Copenhagen! Would highly recommend for any first-timers looking to learn more about the Danish culture and way of life. Jam was a wonderful guide and exuded the true spirit of hygge. Wonderful!

Ms. Grace Y. from Canada traveled on 25 Apr. 2022:

Pauline was amazing I couldn’t have had a better experience with my mom. I learned so much about the Danish life and what truly hygge was. I’m so glad, and I really got such a great understanding of not just hygge, but Copenhagen, and the culture in general. The country is so beautiful and I gained such a big appreciation for Denmark. Pauline was so sweet, and so knowledgable about her country. Thank you so much for introducing us to hygge and Copenhagen. I don’t think I would have learned as much about Copenhagen and the Danish had it not been for her!

Ms. Courtney K. from the United Kingdom traveled on 18 Apr. 2022:

This was a really great tour, showing us the historical significance of certain areas in Copenhagen. It felt quite personal as there were only 5 guests so we got to talk to each other and learn about each other’s culture. We were given a drink of our choice, had a chocolate tasting as well as a pastry of our choice. It was fun and my tour guide, Jacob, was fabulous, especially given the delay to the tour due to a late group.

Mrs. Melora D. from United States of America traveled on 14 Apr. 2022:

Pauline was such a wonderful guide. The treat stops along the way were delicious, and provided a nice casual atmosphere to chat. Great food recommendations too! And she provided interesting information on Danish history and culture. Would recommend if you are visiting Copenhagen!

Mrs. Kristin H. from Germany traveled on 5 Apr. 2022:

We had a wonderful time at our experience. It was a great introduction to the city and we had a very fun group.

Ms. Ene B. from the United Kingdom traveled on 1 Apr. 2022:

This was a worthwhile experience! I really enjoyed the tour with Jamshed. He was very knowledgeable not only about Denmark, but about the rest of the world which was great because the group had people from different parts of the world. The tour was interactive and carried everyone along. The treats were delicious and I got to understand and feel what hygge really is. Jam is personable, funny and polite. I recommend this tour if you want to find gems off the beaten path. Thank you Jam for a great morning!

Mrs. Holly C. from United States of America traveled on 22 Mar 2022:

A really fantastic walk for our first morning in Copenhagen! Helped us to get our bearings. Met some lovely fellow travellers too! A good pace – not too fast – with lots of stops on the way for delicious treats! Highly recommended!

Ms. Hannah K. from Canada traveled on 15 Mar 2022:

This was a nice and chill walking tour. We covered a lot of ground, but nothing ever felt rushed. I loved trying treats from places I wouldn’t have found or picked out on my own as well.

Ms. Sandra P. from Australia traveled on 8 Mar 2022:

I had a tour with Jeppe. It was such a pleasant tour. Throughout the tour, he was knowledgeable and friendly. Having to learn what hygge feels like from a local was really experiencing the culture deeply. I’m glad I had the tour early in the trip. It definitely helped with the rest of the days. I highly recommend it (: Thank you Jeppe!

Mr. J.P. Hansen from United States of America traveled on 3 Mar 2022:

Kicked off my first day in København with this guided walking tour. Was a great experience – our guide Jens is super knowledgeable on his city. Got to learn more about hygge and Danish society and their way of life, which makes me want to live here! Definitely recommend this tour.

Ms. Jennifer H. from Canada traveled on 29 Feb 2022:

My husband and I took our three kids (14, 11, & 9) on this tour. They were not terribly excited about going on a walking tour. However, after our trip to Denmark, I asked each of them what the highlight of the trip was for them. They all answered, this tour! (Well, the 9 yr old son said first was the Lego House, then the tour.) It was a wonderful and magical experience that I highly recommend for anyone wanting to have a great time and a true understanding of Danish culture.

Mrs. Darlene K. from England traveled on 24 Feb 2022:

We booked this tour hoping to experience Copenhagen away from the main tourist attractions. It was all that we had hoped for and more. Jamshed, our tour guide, was absolutely fantastic. He was truly passionate about Copenhagen and offered tons of information about the city, the culture, and the people. He genuinely cared about connecting us to the culture and immersing us in a first hand experience of feeling like a local. We got to see and experience many unique places we certainly would have missed if not for the tour. The final part of the tour we sat down with Jamshed and the other tour members in a quant cafe while chatting over Glogg. Jamshed stayed well over an hour after the scheduled end time for the tour exchanging stories and laughs. The additional time just hanging out made us really feel in the moment and ironically paint the perfect picture of what hygge is.

Ms. Sarah P. from United States of America traveled on 22 Jan 2022:

My husband and I went on this tour in late November. Although the weather was frigid, we loved our experience. We learned a lot and had a wonderful time (even my husband, whom I “dragged” along, loved it!). And, our guide Jamshed (“James”) was amazing — He was super knowledgeable, seemingly about all topics, not just the ones on the tour! I highly recommend both the tour and the guide. Over the course of 9 days in Europe, we went on four different tours and this one was by far the best. If you are on the fence on this tour, trust me, just do it 🙂

Mrs. Charlotte E. from Dubai traveled on 8 Jan 2022:

This was the perfect way to spend our 14 hour layover in Copenhagen. Although it was quite chilly outside, the tour was broken up into breaks with stops along the way. Overall the tour was well thought out and organized. Jeppe was an excellent tour guide! He was knowledgeable about landmarks and the history of the city and also, as an authentic local, he was able to answer any question thrown his way.

Mr. Michael P. from Hong Kong traveled on 29 Dec 2021:

My trip to Denmark was made so much more personal because of this tour. Outside of the information shared, which was great, I also felt I got to learn much more about Danish people.

Mr. Charly K. from Australia traveled on 14 Dec 2021:

We don’t normally go for tours but something about this one sounded perfect for us, not big groups and more off the beaten track. We did this walking tour on our first day in Copenhagen and it set our trip up perfectly. Our guide Soren was knowledgable, personable and easy to get on with and made the walk entertaining and fun. It was really relaxed and you got to see bits of Copenhagen from a different perspective, it also helped us identify areas we wanted to come back to and see more of on our own. So glad we opted for this tour.

Ms. Melissa S. from United States of America traveled on 2 Dec 2021:

This tour was very true to its title. Perfect mix of culture and history. The small group size made the tour and atmosphere cosy and friendly, more like friends talking than a tour! If you’re looking for a more personal feel or flying solo this is the tour for you!

Ms. Anna H. from Canada traveled on 26 Nov 2021:

I really enjoyed the tour with Soren. It allowed me to get to know Copenhagen and also Danish culture from a completely new perspective. Especially the relaxed atmosphere and several stops where you can try tasty pastries and chocolate were really nice. I liked the fact that we were a small group so that everybody could ask questions and exchange with each other. I highly recommend to book this tour.

Mr. Dennis O. from the United Kingdom traveled on 2 Nov 2021:

This was one of our favorite parts of our stay in Copenhagen! You can read all about hygge in a book, but hearing personal stories & seeing the sights with a local makes it so much more personal. Try to do it early in your stay so you’re not repeating any sights you’ve already seen.

Ms. Hannah J. from USA traveled on 29 Oct 2021:

Our tour guide Søren was great. We really enjoyed our tour learning about the history of Copenhagen and Denmark. We got to see sites we would never of gone to. The homemade Danish Pastries, chocolate and coffee were a great way to split up the walking and have a chat about the best things to do while here. I would highly recommend this tour to all who want to really experience and learn about Copenhagen and its culture.

Ms. Andrea K. from Austria traveled on 27 Oct 2021:

Last weekend my husband, our three adult daughters and me had a very nice tour at copenhagen with Jamshed. He was a perfect guide, showing us great places of historical and todays Copenhagen and gave us many interesting informations, which you dont’t find in travel guides.

Mr. Manuel S from USA traveled on 17 Oct. 2021:

Our guide Jakob was incredibly charming. I think I may have been a little star struck when he told us he’d been on the Great Danish Baking Show! I loved hearing his experience growing up there, especially as an adopted Sri Lankan, and loved that we saw some (very Instagrammable) spots I hadn’t seen before. Perhaps the cold drizzly weather contributed to it, but I certainly felt the hygge. The stops where we got to go inside for something warm to drink (and nibble) were perfect. I was certainly glad that we made the extra effort to get out and do something before boarding the long flights home.

Ms. Alicia L. from Canada traveled 12 Oct. 2021:

This tour was a must-do in Copenhagen! You got to see the main attractions while also finding the local hot spots. I’m the type of person who wants to travel to a city and really learn the history and culture of it like a native would see it. Touring with Søren was just that! He showed us all the best spots, answered all our questions, and gave us lots of great advice for the rest of our trip. Thank you for a great day!

Mr. Andrew K. from USA traveled on 16 Aug 2021:

What a fun way to learn about a new city and gain insight into Danish culture. Jacob our guide was great. The time flew by. A little history, a little geography, a little culture a lot of cozy. Great tour.

Ms. Lucia C. from Brazil traveled on 12 Aug 2021:

This walking tour was fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Copenhagen. I had been in the city for several days before I took the tour so I had seen a few of the sights and thought that maybe the tour would show me the same things. It didn’t and I learnt A LOT about the history of the city and the Danish people. Jens was our guide and he was simply wonderful. Having grown up in Copenhagen he was full of knowledge and his love for his city and culture came shining through. We ate several tasty treats including a Danish pastry, and delicate chocolates from a cool chocolate shop. I left the tour with a solid sense of hygge and happiness and will take it home with me to share. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Ms. Ramona H. from Canada traveled on 1 Aug:

My first time in Denmark and I’m in love, I booked the Hygge tour and my guide Jens was informative and very helpful. Explained things normally people wouldn’t know and took us to a garden most locals have never been. The bonus was he even walked with me to the train station to buy a ticket (since I’m a tourist and I get lost easily) so I can visit Arken museum after the tour was done!

Mr. Darren R. from Australia travelled on 29 Jul 2021:

Jam was awesome as our tour guide. It is absolutely worth the price. He made us all feel cosy and at ease, interacted with all of us as a group and individually. He taught us political, economical, social aspects and day to day life of Copenhagen and Denmark interspersed with some fun folklore. We also stopped at some tasty local food and drink places, which we later went back to on our own time (yum!). We toured the beautiful streets and parks of Copenhagen. He also gave us some restaurant recommendations based on what we like. Finishing the tour at a hygge coffee shop on the pedestrian street in the heart of Copenhagen. (p.s. An added bonus is that you are with like minded people, with makes for a great group dynamic)

Ms. Kathy H. from USA traveled on 12 Jul 2021:

We did this with a group of work colleague and Jacob was just a champion. Brilliant knowledge of Danish history, a lovely walk around this gorgeous city, and somehow managed to explain to us so we understood and embraced that unique concept of hygge. Highly recommended.

Mr. Matthew H. from USA traveled on 2 Jul 2021:

We had a great time on the Hygge & Happiness tour, getting a first impression of Copenhagen in a really fun way and learning some interesting facts about the city and Denkmarks history as well. Our guide Jamshed was super nice and also gave us some really good tips on what else to see during our weekend visit. Definitely recommend it, if you want something a little different from your average standard city tour. And if we come back to Copenhagen again, I would love to experience one of their other tours too! (also, the promised treats did NOT disappoint… nomnomnom.)

Mrs. Vera R. from United Kingdom travelled on 11 Jun 2021:

My friend and myself don’t often like “touristy” walking tours, so the Hygge and happiness tour was a perfect way for use to experience and learn about the Danish people from an actual Danish person. Groups are small, and ours was just the 2 of us so we had a private tour! Mie, our guide, was friendly, knowledgeable and funny. The tour is well constructed showing both the big, important landmarks in Copenhagen, but also lesser known little secrets about the city. By the end of tour you will feel you know so much more about Danish culture and Hygge, and can’t help but walking away happier!

Mrs. Nicole D. from USA travelled on 29 March 2021:

After aimlessly wandering a couple other European cities (Brussels, Brugge, Amsterdam) – I was in desperate need of some structure and more intimate knowledge! Jens was an AWESOME guide — full of facts about Copenhagen and what makes Danish people so happy. We got delicious pastries, chocolate and coffee — good sustenance for the ample walking and exploring we did. It was very informal yet very informative! I highly recommend doing this early in your trip, because Jens also provided lots of other recommendations!

Most guests felt that the tour guides were beneficial and informative, some even indicating they were given blankets on a cold day so they could keep warm.

Even those who took the boat tour on a rainy day were impressed with their experience and appreciated the opportunity to see sights of interest that were off the beaten path.

There are a lot of lakes near Copenhagen, and if you’re interested in making a trip out to these beautiful areas of Denmark, you can usually enjoy a cruise or boat trip on these bodies of water as well.

This section covers some of the best lake cruises in and around Copenhagen.

Stromma/Baadfarten

In addition to their Copenhagen canal cruises, this company also offers boat trips to a variety of lakes just outside of the city.

They’re currently working with a company known as Baadfarten to provide this service.

If you plan to visit these areas of Denmark, you might want to consider one of the following services.

Each of these services is hop-on hop-off, which means your ticket for the boat will be active for an entire day, and you can hop on or off at your own discretion to explore multiple stops.

If you choose to stay on the boat, the entire trip takes between 1-2 hours.

Boat Trip on Furesøen Lake

  • €11.97/Adults | €5.98/Youth (6-15)
  • Duration: 1 day
  • Availability: Sunday

Boat Ride on Bagsværd Lake

  • Availability: Tuesday - Sunday

Boat Trip on Lyngby Lake and Millstream

  • Availability: Tuesday - Sunday.

These cruises will start operating from May 2024.

All of these services are pretty well reviewed, receiving a rating of 4.7 out of 5 or better.

Most guests really enjoy these lake cruises, some noting that the opportunity to see beautiful natural Denish sights is an excellent idea.

Reviewers indicate that their tour guides are nice and helpful and the boat trips offer excellent value for the money.

Hop-on Hop-off Boat Tours

In addition to all the other boat tours and canal cruises in Copenhagen, there are also hop-on hop-off boat services.

Unfortunately, these boat tours are not being offered in 2024.

That said, when they do start to offer these outings again, you’ll find that most of them are likely to be included at no extra cost with a hop-on hop-off bus tour.

In addition to their standard 1-hour canal cruise, this company also offers a hop-on hop-off boat tour around Copenhagen with multiple stops throughout the city.

Much like a hop-on hop-off bus tour, your ticket will last for 2 days, and you’ll have the opportunity to get on the boat at any designated stop and jump off wherever you want.

The overall tour takes approximately 90 minutes to complete, and you can expect to see a variety of sites such as Christiansborg Palace, the Little Mermaid, the Opera, the National Bank of Denmark, and more.

  • €14.65 per person
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Winter Hours: 9:30 am - 3 pm
  • Summer Hours: 9:45 am - 5:15 pm
  • Availability: Daily (when the tour is running)

NOTE: This tour is currently not available as of March 2024.

TIP: This service is often included at no additional cost with Stromma’s hop-on hop-off bus tour .

As with their other canal cruises, Stromma typically receives great reviews for their hop-on hop-off boat tours, and they currently enjoy an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars .

Some guests described the outing as convenient and relaxing, but others felt it was merely an average experience.

Whether it’s the best Copenhagen boat tour or not, this is an excellent way to get around the city and see some of the most notable and historic landmarks from the water.

An exciting way to see the main sights and learn more about the history of Copenhagen!

There are a variety of different ways to save money on Copenhagen boat tours and canal cruises.

This section will cover the best deals and discounts on this activity, including tourist passes and combo deals.

Copenhagen Tourist Passes

There are multiple tourist passes available in Copenhagen that include canal boat tours at no additional cost.

If you’re planning to enjoy a number of activities and Copenhagen's best sights while you’re here, these services could help you save 50% or more on tickets.

Here are the boat tours and cruises currently offered with Copenhagen tourist passes:

Copenhagen Card

  • Also on the Copenhagen City Pass
  • Furesøen Lake
  • Bagsværd Lake
  • Lyngby Lake and Millstream

Copenhagen City Pass

  • Stromma Hop-on Hop-off Boat Tour

These tourist passes also include access to a lot of other popular activities including the following:

  • Experimentarium
  • Kronborg Castle
  • National Museum
  • Tivoli Gardens

If you’re interested in any of the following tours or attractions, make sure to read more about these services in our post covering Copenhagen tourist passes .

Combo Packages

One of the most popular combo deals in Copenhagen includes both a hop-on hop-off bus and boat tour for one low price.

While this package usually includes a hop-on hop-off boat tour, at the moment they are only offering a 1-hour canal cruise.

This service is only available during the spring and summer.

When hop-on hop-off boat tours return in 2024, chances are they will once again begin offering this option instead.

  • 24 Hour Hop on Hop Off Bus Tour
  • 1 Hour Copenhagen Canal Cruise
  • €24.50/Adults | €15.00/Kids

Tips From Travelers and Locals

There are several great Facebook Groups where both travelers and locals will share their suggestions for fun activities like these canal tours.

The Wonderful Copenhagen group is one of the best for travelers visiting this city, and there are several helpful tips for those interested in a cruise down the canals.

copenhagen youtube tour

This user notes that the public ferry in Copenhagen is a much more affordable option, and it covers much of the same ground.

You can use the ferry by getting a 24 hour ticket, which is good on all of their public transportation.

Even after you ride the ferry, you'll still be able to ride the bus, train, and metro as well!

copenhagen youtube tour

Although public ferries might be more affordable, this group member insists that the tour is better, because your guide will teach you various facts about the city along the way.

copenhagen youtube tour

Another user notes that if you are using the Copenhagen Card to save money on this activity, you'll have to catch the boat at Ved Stranden.

If you're currently in Nyhavn and interested in taking the canal tour, this could be inconvenient.

copenhagen youtube tour

While many will want to consider the public ferries instead of an official canal tour, some group members still find the more expensive services are worth the price thanks to their much more comfortable boats.

For even more helpful advice, don't forget to check the Wonderful Copenhagen group on Facebook!

SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

Billie Eilish will continue her long-standing partnership with environmental nonprofit REVERB on this tour, building on the success of previous efforts, which resulted in over $1 million donated to environmental, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate justice projects, more than 150,000 fan actions, and much more. Sustainability efforts on this tour will include reducing greenhouse gas pollution, decreasing single-use plastic waste, supporting climate action, and updating concession offerings to promote and encourage plant-based food options with Support+Feed .

In keeping with her commitment to making a difference in the environmental impacts of her music and touring, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales in North America will go to  REVERB  and its ongoing effort to help support organizations across the country addressing the impacts of food insecurity and the climate crisis.

SUPPORT+FEED

For collective action at the intersection of climate and food, Support+Feed will be launching a 360 campaign throughout the tour. Following the success in 2022, Support+Feed will offer an expanded version of the Support+Feed Pledge inspiring fans to eat one plant-based meal a day for 30 days with digital elements and community activations. Fans will also have the opportunity to participate in Plant-based Food Drives in a selection of cities alongside the tour to raise awareness and gather food to distribute to local communities.

Fans are encouraged to join the effort to make the HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR more sustainable. Where possible, take public transportation and carpool to and from the shows to help reduce greenhouse gas pollution and encourage more public transportation options. Fans will receive information via email about public transportation options before the show.

Venue partners are also helping to lessen the environmental footprint of the tour. In addition to efforts to decrease waste through reducing or eliminating single-use plastics and diverting landfill waste with compost and recycling, venues will be offering plant-based food options at all shows.

FAN PARTICIPATION

Bring an empty reusable water bottle or donate for a custom RockNRefill Nalgene bottle to fill up at the free water refill stations located at each venue. The RockNRefill bottles and refill stations are located at the Eco-Villages in the main concourse at all shows. Fight fast fashion by opting for thrifted, upcycled, or borrowed clothes instead of buying new clothing to wear to shows.

*The tour wants to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value. To make this possible they have chosen to use Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange. If fans purchase tickets for a show in the U.S. or Canada and can’t attend, they’ll have the option to resell them to other fans at the original price paid. To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows except those in Colorado, Illinois, and New York where Face Value Exchange cannot be mandated. Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange. More information on how the Ticketmaster Exchange works is available here .
