2024 Public Cruises on the Packet

The River Packet runs regularly scheduled public cruises Thursday - Saturday evenings, and Saturday/Sunday afternoons from April through November, unless privately chartered or otherwise unavailable. Enjoy a leisurely trip down the Chester River with friends, relaxing on the upper deck or snuggled down in the spacious interior cabin. Food is included on all cruises except the Saturday River Tours (1:00 pm sail); beverages available for purchase on all trips.

Note: All cruises subject to change/cancellation due to weather, insufficient signups, or privately chartered sails. Please check our Cruise Calendar for the latest information or call 410-635-0321.

Useful information for your boating holiday, the historic city of chester.

Boating through rural Cheshire

Chester represents our most restful out and back cruise. A mere ten hours boating out from Middlewich, it requires just three or four hours a day through pleasant Cheshire countryside on the move for a week's holiday; though you will probably want to boat for a bit longer each day so as to allow yourselves plenty of time for exploring this most beautiful of cities when you get there. At the outset you head westwards along the Shropshire Union Canal to Barbridge Junction where you pursue your leisurely course along the quiet waters of the old broadbeam Chester Canal.

The locks on this section are wide enough to cope with two narrow boats, side by side, and if another boat is travelling in your direction, it both saves water and helps with the workload to share the locks. Suddenly you get your first glimpse of Beeston Castle soaring above the Cheshire Plain on its high sandstone crag. King John is said to have buried treasure here which has never been found - or perhaps the person who found it just didn't tell the rest of the world! It's open to the public under the aegis of English Heritage, so you can go and do a little treasure hunting for yourself. There are other pleasant ports of call on this stretch of canal; the lockside cottage at Beeston Stone Lock where freshly baked home-produce is often obtainable; the little glory hole of a craft shop at Castle Wharf; the neighbouring country auction ring; and the Shady Oak, a convivial canalside pub just made for thirsty and hungry boaters.

Exploring Chester is easy on a boating holiday!

Getting into Chester these days by car is a bit of a headache, but the only ache you experience in arriving here by canal is from operating the quintet of locks which, at intervals, drop you down into the heart of the city, where you can moor within earshot of the cathedral without a traffic warden in sight. Make no mistake, Chester is one of the great treasure houses of Europe, and quite the best way to effect an introduction to it is to perambulate its ancient walls.

Familiarity gained by this, gravitate toward the centre, explore the famous galleried Rows, and then go and wallow in the hushed peace of the cathedral. Then you can decide where to eat, a choice not made any easier by a proliferation of enchanting looking restaurants, cafes and pubs.

How to find us

All cruises depart from The Groves, Souters Lane, Chester, CH1 1SZ (if using a SatNav please check that this is sending you down Souters Lane and not  Dee Lane).

Please note that there are a limited number of free parking spaces at The Groves, which can fill up quickly in the summer, and they are not operated by ChesterBoat. Parking is limited to one hour in the standard bays. With a Blue Badge, parking is available for 3 hours in a standard bay or untimed in a disabled bay. Parking restrictions end at 6pm.

If you are able, we recommend parking elsewhere in the city. The nearest car parks are:

NCP Pepper Street Car Park , Pepper St, Chester, CH1 1DF (multistorey car park with 287 spaces, approx. 5 minute walk down a slight hill)

Little Roodee Coach & Car Park , Grosvenor Rd, Chester, CH1 1SL (outdoor car park with 452 spaces, approx. 8 minute flat walk along the river)

By train/bus

The moorings are approximately a 10 minute walk from Chester Bus Interchange and 20 minutes from Chester Railway Station.

• Dogs on leads are welcome on the daytime sightseeing cruises
• There are toilets onboard the half-hour, two-hour and evening cruises. Public toilets are also located 100m from the moorings. There is step-free access to toilet facilities, but not full wheelchair access
• The Lady Diana and Mark Twain have wheelchair access to the rear deck (which is heated and enclosed)
• As all boats are heated and covered, boats will still sail in cold and wet weather
• All cruises have fully-stocked bars selling alcohol, soft drinks, and hot drinks. There are also crisps for sale on board and picnics are permitted

Party Nights Afloat

Sat 20th april, rock the boat with party nights afloat.

Step aboard and set sail with us for a night out with a difference. Choose your theme, choose your date, and sail back in time with us through your favourite eras in music, with the spectacular backdrop of the River Dee.

The key info…

When?  Party Nights Afloat cruises sail at 7.30pm sharp and return at 10.30pm. Boarding begins at 7.15pm. Scroll down to see the full list of dates.

What’s included?  Your ticket includes a hot buffet supper, a disco with professional DJ, and a glass of house wine on arrival.

Where?  All of our cruises sail from The Groves, Souters Lane, Chester, CH1 1SZ, right next to Hickory’s Smokehouse. We return to the same place.

How much?  Tickets are £36.50 per person when booking and paying in full online .

Can I pay a deposit? If you’d like to split the cost into a deposit and balance, the total ticket price is £38.50 and this needs to be paid in full 4 weeks before the cruise. You can’t do this online, so you’ll need to give us a call during office opening hours.

A few more important things…

• • Tickets are not refundable once booked unless the event is cancelled by us.
• • Party Nights Afloat are not suitable for under 18s, and we cannot accept stag group bookings. Fancy dress is very welcome onboard, but please note that we do not allow feather boas, confetti, or loose glitter.
• • In the rare event that the boat is unable to sail due to weather or river conditions, the party will still take place on a stationary boat.
• • We want everyone to have a safe and fun night. We reserve the right to refuse entry to ticketholders who are intoxicated or return early if we need to ask a passenger to leave.
• • If you are making several separate bookings for one group, please choose one group name (eg. “Sarah’s Hen Party”) and enter this on the booking form, so we can make sure you’re all seated together.
• • Please note that as this is an enclosed indoor space, we cannot allow smoking/vaping all the time. We usually allow a couple of smoking/vaping breaks through the evening in a designated space onboard but occasionally this is not possible. Please consider before booking whether you would be happy with this arrangement.
• • Our house DJs stick broadly to the theme but will sometimes play tunes from other eras to get everyone up and dancing.
• • We need to know at least 7 days in advance about any dietary requirements, including vegetarians. If you don’t know all of them when you complete the booking online, please get in touch nearer the time to confirm your needs.

Before you board, we highly recommend checking the Chester River Packet calendar to check availability and current weather conditions. Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling 410-635-0321. Brampton Inn is also happy to make reservations for our guests! Boarding begins 15 minutes before departure time, so plan on arriving early. Below is the typical schedule for public cruises:
