Ov Sulfur & Mental Cruelty announce co-headlining winter 2024 tour w/ Ghost Bath & Extermination Dismemberment

deathcore bands on tour

Ov Sulfur and Mental Cruelty announce a co-headlining tour across North America for early 2024. The Beyond the Eternal Tour features Ghost Bath and Extermination Dismemberment. Starting February 7th in Mesa, AZ, and ending March 9th in Las Vegas, NV. Tickets are on sale now.

Ov Sulfur expressed:

“We’re beyond excited (no pun intended) to announce the “Beyond the Eternal Tour,” which we’re co-headlining with labelmates MENTAL CRUELTY. Both bands deliver blackened deathcore with ferocity. Our metalcore inflections are complemented by their extra-blackened leanings for a bill that’s devilishly divine. To elevate the tour, we got depressive post-black metallers GHOST BATH, whose genre agnostic take on their umbrella genre is not far off from ours, as well as EXTERMINATION DISMEMBERMENT: one of the heaviest slamming deathcore bands on the planet all the way from Belarus! If you like your deathcore with a heavy heaping of brutality and an undercurrent of blasphemy—both lyrically and with (lack of) regard to musical rules—this is THE tour for you. Come join us BEYOND THE ETERNAL!”

Mental Cruelty added:

“The time has come! MENTAL CRUELTY will finally come back to North America with one of the sickest line-ups to date, and we couldn’t be happier about it. On board and co-headlining we have label mates OV SULFUR, who will bless you with heavy riffs and crushing breakdowns that will rock your socks off. In addition, we are more then happy to have GHOST BATH and EXTERMINATION DISMEMBERMENT on the line-up as well. While GHOST BATH will take you to another planet with their haunting atmosphere and emotional-driven melodies, EXTERMINATION DISMEMBERMENT will make sure to leave nothing but devastation behind them—so be sure to bring some extra underwear, just in case. As for us, we are beyond excited to finally show you our latest record Zwielicht live, and we cant fucking wait to see all of you again after 4 years of not touring North America. (For those keeping track, that means A Hill to Die Upon has yet to bless your stage, too, so expect some of that!) If you are into blast beats, devastating breakdowns, haunting atmospheres and heavy-as-fuck riffs, you don’t want to miss this. This will be a tour to be remembered, that’s for sure!”

Ov Sulfur, Mental Cruelty, Ghost Bath & Extermination Dismemberment Announce North American Tour

Ov Sulfur , the blackened deathcore outfit fronted by ex- Suffokate vocalist Ricky Hoover , will be hitting the road with German deathcore outfit Mental Cruelty for a North American co-headlining tour early next year. Ghost Bath and Extermination Dismemberment  round out the bill for that run, tickets for which are now on sale.

Beyond Breakdowns and Pig Squeals: 10 Rising Bands Pushing Deathcore Forward

Paleface band live 2022, jendralow

Deathcore is in a particularly great spot right now. It would be unfair to call it a resurgence since the genre never became less active after it popped off in the late aughts, but the proliferation of deathcore covers and reaction videos on TikTok is putting the music in front of new ears, and over the last couple years, many younger bands have proven themselves with innovative, daring and decimatingly heavy new albums.

Fresh influences are coming into the fold, the benefits of modern production are making everything hit harder and the increased reach of social media has made it easier than ever for bands from all over the world to jumpstart careers. The sheer breadth of the scene could never be fully represented in a single article, but we wanted to highlight 10 standout bands who are rising out of the underground and pushing deathcore in brave new directions.

Armed with three guitarists and two vocalists, AngelMaker are like a deathcore militia — and their sound is fucking violent. The Vancouver commandos assembled over a decade ago and dropped a 2012 EP called Decay that earned them minor buzz, but it wasn't until their 2015 LP, Dissentient , that they became a force to be reckoned with. Their dueling frontmen, Casey Tyson-Pearce and Mike Greenwood, continued to develop their chemistry on 2019's self-titled album, but the singles from this year's Sanctum are some of their best material yet — heavy but memorable, technical but tasteful and even more vocally impressive.

Named after an Indonesian "deer pig" with crooked horns protruding from its snout, Babirusa certainly aren't going for cute and cuddly. The Australian unit — sporting two vocalists, one shrieker and one bellower — play songs with tech-deathy drumming and moments of guitar heroics, but also tons of mosh-worthy flavor, never falling victim to masturbatory craftsmanship. "Abomination" has a strange, hip-hoppy breakdown in the middle with a watery sound effect, while a song like "Catatonia" injects flecks of djenty groove and even a proggy clean bridge in between the chunky breakdowns.

Brand of Sacrifice

If you're a deathcore OG who yearns for the cinematic grandeur of the first two Winds of Plague albums, then Brand of Sacrifice are a must-listen. The anime-inspired Canadian crew 's 2021 opus, Lifeblood, was one of the best deathcore albums of the year , catapulting them among the genre's most widely-beloved young acts and landing them an impressive support slot on Dying Fetus' U.S. tour. Harnessing the classy sheen of cutting-edge metal production, they decorate their pummeling songs with medieval choral arrangements and ornate strings that sound like final boss music from a fantasy RPG.

Lorna Shore

Lorna Shore have technically been kicking around the scene for over a decade, but it wasn't until their internet-breaking 2021 single, "To the Hellfire," that they became undeniable stars. After forming in 2010 with a muscular metalcore sound, they soon transitioned into a concussive deathcore machine who maintained a prolific and increasingly gnarly output despite their carousel of member changes. Last year, YouTube notable Will Ramos was minted as their third vocalist, and his jaw-dropping wolfman snorts during "To the Hellfire"'s monstrous climax marked a new era for Lorna Shore — and possibly even deathcore as a whole.

Mental Cruelty

It's hard to think of a band who's doing blackened deathcore better than Mental Cruelty. Although the German crushers formed in 2014, the only remaining original member is frontman Lucca Schmerler, whose vocals have improved tenfold since the band's first few years as competent Whitechapel imitators. Their rage was promising from the jump, but they truly came into their own on last year's magnificent A Hill to Die Upon , which leveled up the brutality (slam parts aplenty) while also opening their musical pallette to include breathtaking gusts of black-metal and symphonic strings that would make Dani Filth proud.

Similar to how Hatebreed influenced the first wave of deathcore bands, 2010s metallic hardcore groups like Knocked Loose and Kublai Khan are now having a discernible impact on deathcore's new generation. While U.S. peers such as SPITE and Varials are definitely fair comparisons, Switzerland's Paleface take things up a few notches and literally call themselves "slamming beatdown," which is an apt description for a sound that blends the thudding riffs of bands like Merauder and Sworn Enemy with the gurgly vocals and slammy blast-beats of deathcore.

Shadow of Intent

When Shadow of Intent frontman Ben Duerr told us about the 10 albums that made him , his band's eclectic array of heavy stylings started to make a lot of sense. The frontman is influenced by everything from Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth to Cannibal Corpse and Lamb of God, and you can hear a little bit of all those bands on Shadow of Intent's blistering new album, Elegy . Duerr is a particularly strong vocalist who makes full use of his low and high registers, but his bandmates also write kickass riffs and aren't afraid to experiment with varying tempos, as on the mid-pace stomp and glorious leads on "Of Fury."

To the Grave

Australia has long been a hotbed for amazing deathcore (Thy Art is Murder, Make Them Suffer, etc.) and To the Grave are another one of the country's heaviest exports. Making them standout, their lyrics are a lot more insightful than the average platitudes about pain and suffering. With songs titled "Holocaustralia" and "Kill Shelter," the band offer impassioned messages about climate change and animal abuse that are delivered with a uniquely furious rage. Frontman Dane Evans channels the banshee-like highs of Suicide Silence's late, great Mitch Lucker, and the instrumentation finds a happy medium between tech-y and chuggy.

Purely calling Vexed a deathcore band is selling them a bit short, as the U.K. gang draw from a deep well of influences that includes everyone from Emmure to Cardi B. Yes, frontwoman Megan Targett often bursts into soulful clean vocals, but the bulk of their sound consists of elastic, down-tuned djent grooves, athletic guitar sweeps and fearsome uncleans that range from spitfire scream-raps to earth-shaking growls. Their 2021 debut, Culling Culture , is filled with standout moments — the helicopter-rudder riff of "Hideous," Thy Art Is Murder's CJ McMahon popping up on "Elite," and the utterly violent breakdowns of "Fake."

Worm Shepherd

If black metal's increasing impact on deathcore wasn't already obvious, then Worm Shepherd frontman Devin Duarte literally wearing corpse paint in the video for "Accursed" has cemented its grasp on the zeitgeist. In the case of this Massachusets band, who only formed in 2020 and have already released two albums, the symphonic black-metal thumbprint of Dimmu Borgir and Emperor might even be more present in their sound than the deathcore of forefathers like Whitechapel and Despised Icon. Duarte's delightfully muddled brees throw it back to the Myspace days, but his pained highs evoke way more tortured emotion than the average deathcore shrieker can muster.

Below, watch Brand of Sacrifice's Kyle Anderson react to Revolver's list of the 15 most essential deathcore albums — and add a few of his own picks.

Carnifex are an American deathcore band, signed to Nuclear Blast and hailing from San Diego, California. They formed in 2005.

Taking their name from the Old English Latin word for ‘executioner’, Carnifex wear their death metal influences pretty firmly on their collective sleeve. Their current lineup currently comprises just two original members - frontman Scott Lewis and drummer Shawn Cameron - as well as rhythm guitarist Cory Arford, bassist Fred Calderon and lead guitar player Jordan Lockrey. They formed in Fallbrook, California, and went onto release their debut album, ‘Dead in My Arms’, in July 2007.

That album sold over five thousand copies, despite enjoying no real widespread publicity, and that achievement in itself was enough to gain them a three-record deal with Victory Records, who would go on to put out ‘The Diseased and the Poisoned’ in 2008, ‘Hell Chose Me’ in 2010, and ‘Until I Feel Nothing’ a year later, in October of 2011. Musically, they’ve adhered pretty close to the deathcore crossover sound that characterized their early work, which in turn lends a genuine intensity to their live shows; they were part of the Never Say Die! tour in Europe in 2013. In 2014, they released their fifth studio album, and their first on the legendary Nuclear Blast - ‘Die Without Hope’. Signing to a label so important within their own genre is clear evidence of Carnifex’s current upwards trajectory.

Live reviews

You cannot fault Carnifex for their insane guitar riffs and ability to head bang for a ridiculous amount of time, it must take a lot of work and incredibly strong neck muscles. However this band to me sounds just like every other death core style band, as it's impossible to hear their lyrics and I don't really consider it singing when they scream so loud and high pitched that only dogs can hear them. But this band originally formed in 2005 and has more recently signed to Nuclear Blast, previous to that they were signed to Victory Records. The group has managed to release 5 full albums, which is pretty impressive. Although my view is pretty biased because I'm not really a fan of this genre of music, I do have a massive appreciation for this group as their performances are well thought out and you can tell they give it everything they have. The bands second album 'The Diseased and the Poisoned' reached number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and since that they managed to tour over 22 countries with bands like Unleashed and Darkest Hour. I can't help but be negative about these kinds of groups though, but after all that is what their lyrics are all based on, negativity. Their first album was actually all about self-harm and heartbreak. For people who want to hear about these subjects and like this genre of music, this band is up there with the best of them from what I can tell. They know how to get a good mosh pit going in a crowd and how to get everyone riled up with them, but they're not for everyone.

With a name that derives from the Latin word for butcher or executioner and a sound that is deeply rooted in the intense genre of deathcore, it is fair to say a Carnifex show is not for everyone. In fact you have to be pretty dedicated to this San Diego band's music and mentality before stepping into the twisted world of their live performance. As the venue basks in an eerie red and black glow, the group files onto stage and the whole crowd erupts. It is clear that the majority present are dedicated fans who have been listening to Carnifex throughout their decade long career.

From the first instrumentals, the whole room begins to surge towards the stage as the quintet remain partially entranced in their instrumentals. As the percussion kicks in they begin to wildly head bang, long hair flying everywhere whilst the crowd mimic the actions. Scott Lewis leers at the audience and orders them to give their all throughout the short but severe setlist. There is moshing during 'Dark Days' whilst intense solos lead up to 'Hell Chose Me' and the whole room chants back the chorus at huge volumes.

The Decade of Despair Tour. Carnifex has been around now for 10 years and hasn't lost any of their fire at all. Upon going to the show, I had been listening to them for a number of years. The opening bands such as Lorna Shore, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life and Within The Ruins really set off the show. I was fairly disappointed in hearing Black Tongue had been removed from the first half of the tour. But nonetheless, these bands stepped it up and made us lose our minds.

As for my negative about the show, the set lists were very short. Great bands only got to play maybe 4 songs at most. But Carnifex dished out a total of about 10 which is absolutely fine being the headliner but I believe some really great bands didn't have enough time to really shine and show us how hard they can throw down.

All in all, great show, great bands and Carnifex can kill any city they step in.

10 Greatest Deathcore Bands

A little over 15 years ago, Job for a Cowboy released their Doom EP and, all of a sudden, deathcore became the next big thing in metal.

Deathcore has brought some of the heaviest music of the 21st century. Combining the monstrous gutturals of death metal and the rhythm-heavy chugging of metalcore, deathcore created a new scene of hugely popular bands. Though Job for a Cowboy would shed their deathcore shell and emerge as a death metal band, their debut EP became one of the most influential metal records of the 2000s.

Suicide Silence also rode the initial deathcore wave in the mid-2000s. After setting themselves up with an EP and a split, Suicide Silence became deathcore’s gold standard with 2007’s The Cleansing . The Mitch Lucker era of the band’s history turned out to be essential for deathcore’s foundation and still is to this day.

Directly influenced by deathcore’s early releases, Whitechapel formed in 2006. With six albums released, Whitechapel arguably wear deathcore’s crown in 2017 thanks to Phil Bozeman’s grotesque voice and the band’s ever-evolving instrumental section.

Check out our picks for the 10 Greatest Deathcore Bands in the Loud List below!

Unveiling the Depths: A Journey through the History of Deathcore and recognizing the brutal metal subgenre’s top 13 bands

In the cataclysmic landscape of heavy metal, there exists a subgenre that stands as a relentless force, known for its brutal intensity and unapologetic aggression. It’s a realm where bone-crushing breakdowns collide with visceral growls, creating an auditory onslaught like no other. This is the realm of Deathcore .

Origins: Forging a New Path

Originating from the depths of extreme metal, Deathcore emerged as a fusion of death metal’s brutality and hardcore punk’s ferocity. Its roots can be traced back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, when bands began experimenting with blending the sonic elements of death metal and hardcore. While the exact birthplace of the genre remains a topic of debate among enthusiasts, it undeniably found its earliest foothold in the underground metal scenes of the United States.

One of the pioneering bands often credited with laying it’s groundwork is DESPISED ICON . Hailing from Montreal, Canada, DESPISED ICON ‘s 2002 debut album, “ Consumed by Your Poison ,” showcased a potent mix of death metal riffing, breakdowns, and hardcore-influenced vocals. Their relentless aggression and technical prowess set a precedent for what was to come in the burgeoning extreme metal scene.

Simultaneously, in the United States, bands like SUICIDE SILENCE , and THE RED CHORD were carving their own paths in the realm of extreme music. SUICIDE SILENCE ‘s debut album, “ The Cleansing ,” released in 2007, catapulted them into the forefront of the movement with its blend of guttural vocals, frenetic riffing, and pulverizing breakdowns. Similarly, THE RED CHORD ‘s chaotic and abrasive style contributed to shaping the sound, albeit with a more pronounced grindcore influence.

Defining Characteristics: The Anatomy of Deathcore

At the core of the genre lies a relentless onslaught of sonic brutality. Characterized by downtuned guitars, blistering blast beats, and vocals that range from guttural growls to piercing shrieks, the sound is unmistakable in its intensity. One of the genre’s defining features is the breakdown, a rhythmic and percussive passage that serves as a focal point for mosh pits and headbanging frenzies. These bone-crushing moments of catharsis are often accompanied by chugging guitar riffs and syncopated drum patterns, creating a sense of primal energy that is as exhilarating as it is punishing.

Coupled with lyrical themes ranging from violence and nihilism to introspection and societal critique, Deathcore isn’t exactly background dinner music when the in-laws are visiting from out of town. It’s sole purpose is a complete audio pulverizing in the most brutal way possible, complete with breakdowns, aggressive riffs and snarling guttural vocals strait out of the darkest pits of the abyss that is extreme metal. It is meant to be consumed at loud levels. The louder the better.

Deathcore vs. Death Metal

Death metal and Deathcore are two closely related subgenres within the broader spectrum of extreme metal, yet they exhibit distinct characteristics that set them apart from each other.

Death metal, originating in the late 1980s , is characterized by its fast tempos, complex guitar riffs, blast beat drumming, and deep, guttural vocals often referred to as “growls” or “death grunts.” The lyrics typically revolve around themes of violence, gore, and morbidity. Bands like DEATH, CANNIBAL CORPSE and MORBID ANGEL are considered pioneers of the genre. The instrumentation in death metal tends to be more intricate and technical, with an emphasis on musicianship and complex song structures.

On the other hand, Deathcore emerged in the early 2000s as a fusion of death metal and metalcore elements. It incorporates breakdowns, which are heavy, slowed-down passages typically accompanied by chugging guitar riffs, alongside elements of death metal such as growled vocals and blast beats. Deathcore often features a mix of harsh, guttural vocals and screamed or shouted vocals, adding an additional layer of intensity to the music. While it retains the aggression and heaviness of death metal, it often incorporates more melodic elements and breakdowns borrowed from metalcore.

In summary, while the two genres share similarities in terms of heaviness and aggression, they differ in their musical characteristics, lyrical themes, and overall sound. Death metal tends to be more technical and focused on intricate instrumentation, while Deathcore incorporates elements of metalcore and emphasizes breakdowns alongside brutal vocals.

Standout Bands: Icons of Aggression

As it continued to evolve, bands like WHITECHAPEL, CARNIFEX and CHELSEA GRIN emerged, each adding their own unique twists to the genre. WHITECHAPEL ‘s 2007 album, “ The Somatic Defilement, ” showcased their signature blend of relentless aggression and groove-laden riffs, while CARNIFEX ‘s debut, “ Dead in My Arms ,” introduced a darker, more atmospheric approach to the genre.

Evolution and Modern Scene: A Continuing Saga of Brutality

As the years have passed, deathcore has continued to evolve and adapt, incorporating elements from a diverse array of musical influences. Bands like FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY and SHADOW OF INTENT have pushed the boundaries of the genre, incorporating elements of atmospheric black metal and progressive extreme metal into their sound. Meanwhile, newcomers like LORNA SHORE and ANGELMAKER have injected fresh blood into the scene, revitalizing the genre with their own unique take on sonic brutality.

Significant Events: Milestones in Mayhem

Throughout its history, the genre has been marked by a series of significant events that have shaped it’s course. The tragic death of SUICIDE SILENCE vocalist Mitch Lucker in 2012 sent shockwaves through the metal community, prompting an outpouring of grief and solidarity from fans around the world.

Today, the genre stands as a global phenomenon, with bands from all corners of the world contributing to its sonic landscape. Among the contemporary torchbearers are THY ART IS MURDER , whose unrelenting brutality and socio-political lyricism have earned them widespread acclaim, and FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY , whose blend of technicality and melody pushes the boundaries of Deathcore .

In the tumultuous landscape of heavy metal, where trends come and go like passing storms, Deathcore stands as a bastion of unrelenting aggression and uncompromising intensity. From its humble beginnings as a fusion of disparate musical influences to its status as a global phenomenon, Deathcore has carved out a niche all its own in the pantheon of extreme music. As long as there are fans willing to embrace the chaos and embrace the brutality, the legacy will continue to endure, remaining a testament to the enduring power of sonic extremity.

Originally formed in 2006 Call Of Charon are one of the senior German deathcore bands.

Enhanced by the most influential producers of the genre (Tue Madsen, Zack Ohren) the band also collaborated with well-known artists like CJ McMahon (Thy Art Is Murder), Frankie Palmeri (Emmure), Jamie Hanks (I Declare War) or Henri Sattler (God Dethroned). Their last three regular releases earned top reviews all over the world. From "record of the year" awards to overwhelming positive critics, professional journalists agree in the bands potential!

Sold out records and hundred thousands streams of songs & music videos underline the ever growing fan base of the band. From headlining club shows, to support slots for touring scene heavyweights like Thy Art is Murder, Dying Fetus or Napalm Death to festival gigs (f.e. Dong Open Air, Rage Against Racism, Mahlstrom Open Air) Call Of Charon played more than 150 live shows.

Since 2019 Call Of Charon is signed to Massacre Records and distributed by Soulfood Music. To shorten the waiting time for their second long player and without further ado, Call Of Charon release a new five-song EP "The Sound Of Sorrow" on December 2nd, 2022.

"The Sound Of Sorrow" consistently continues the uncompromising nature of the last album, but also comes up with a few surprises: For the first time ever, the band recorded a cover song and provide German lyrics to one of their tracks. Along with Jamie Hanks (I Declare War) and Jenni Gornicki (formerly Convictive) providing guest vocals, Tue Madsen (Heaven Shall Burn, Suicide Silence) delivers a powerful production.

Set to live up to their reputation of being the torchbearers of modern Death Metal after releasing two EPs, two split albums, one full length record and a compilation, Call Of Charon is just about to start the songwriting for their second LP.

"I want us to be the scariest ride at the amusement park": How Lorna Shore became deathcore's defining stars

Lorna Shore's first decade was blighted with line-up changes and uncertainty, but with Will Ramos and a viral hit on TikTok they broke through the deathcore ceiling to define a new movement of heaviness

Lorna Shore

The opening of the show is like something from a horror movie. The sinister choral intro of Welcome Back, O’ Sleeping Dreamer reaches a crescendo as blinding blue light floods the venue. Lorna Shore run onstage. “Berlinnnnn! Are you guys ready to fucking jump?” shouts frontman Will Ramos .

Then, punctuated by a “blegh”, plumes of flame shoot up around him. We’re at the 3,500-capacity Columbiahalle in Berlin, Germany. Tonight’s show has been upgraded from the 2,000-capacity Astra venue – one of many upgrades on this headline tour. It’s the culmination of a year in which the New Jersey quintet have played Download’s Main Stage, supported Parkway Drive in Europe’s arenas, and opened for Gojira and Mastodon in amphitheatres across the US.

All this, and they’re a deathcore band. Will Ramos still can’t believe their luck. “I was just sitting down earlier and I was like, ‘Holy shit, we’re a real band,’” he giggles, when we catch up with him before the show. He does so with the sort of energy you’d expect from a naughty schoolboy who has snuck into the headmaster’s office. “Whether it’s sound or lights or performance, it’s all coming together perfectly and seamlessly.”

Their popularity is even more remarkable because no one saw it coming. After forming in 2009, releasing three albums and enduring endless line-up changes, some saw Lorna Shore as also-rans, or hadn’t heard of them at all. Now, with a charismatic singer at their helm and a cinematically ambitious fourth record in 2022’s Pain Remains , they’re a band reborn, and one of the most talked-about in the modern metal scene.

“We never expected to get traction the way we did,” says Will. “Now we’re out playing these massive shows. Yesterday, looking at the set-up we have, I thought to myself, ‘Dude, two years ago no one would have believed that we could play places like this.'" He puffs out his cheeks and grins.

Lorna Shore are one of metal’s longest ‘overnight success’ stories. After releasing debut EP Triumph in 2010, they followed up with a series of EPs and albums of varying quality, all the way to their third full-length, 2020’s Immortal . During that time they gained a small but dedicated fanbase, but suffered through multiple member changes, with only one man present throughout it all: guitarist and band architect Adam De Micco.

Adam describes his first decade in Lorna Shore as “gruelling”, admitting there were multiple occasions where the band nearly split, dating all the way back to 2013, when he almost went back to school prior to the release of third EP Maleficium .

“Being the opening band of seven on some tour, you’re just kinda eating the shit a little bit,” he smiles. “That was the first 10 years of this band. You’re putting all this effort in, and you question yourself and think, ‘Why am I still doing this?’ I can look back now and see why it was worth it, but in that moment, it can really fuck with you. I had times where I didn’t feel as committed to it, but other people were. That kept my motivation going somewhat.”

Adam is your typical, friendly-but-quiet band type, but when he talks about the journey Lorna Shore have been on, you can tell he’s not one to compromise. “We never listened to anyone else,” he says, with a steely glint in his eye. “I’d have ideas and producers in the studio would be like, ‘You can’t write a long song, every song should be three minutes!’ And now it’s like, ‘OK, we wrote a three-part, 20-minute-long song [the closer of Pain Remains ] and everyone loved it. I guess you don’t have all the answers.’”

Adam describes the departure of vocalist Tom Barber in 2018 as the moment that “was going to be the last straw”, but he rallied and Lorna Shore continued. “That moment… deciding to carry on, it just made it easier when it came to dealing with hurdles,” he explains.

And boy, did Lorna Shore encounter a hell of a hurdle in the aftermath of that decision. Tom’s replacement, CJ McCreery, lasted just over a year and a half, before he was abruptly removed from the band due to allegations of sexual abuse (which he has denied). We tell Adam and Will they don’t have to go into the situation if they don’t feel they can. “Definitely not,” Will instantly replies. It might be the only time he stops smiling during our entire time together.

Lorna Shore

After losing six bandmembers in 10 years, it would have been easy for Lorna Shore to fold. Instead, they recruited Will Ramos from fellow New Jersey band Monument Of A Memory, initially just to fill in for the rest of the European dates they had lined up for early 2020. “I had mixed feelings of excitement and anxiousness,” Will recalls. “Even when I was just trying out for that one tour, I was like, ‘I have to give 120% every single day.’”

Will’s anxiety was heightened because he just so happened to be a huge fan of Lorna Shore after getting into them around Maleficium . He admits he didn’t always deal with it well. “Eight years of me loving this band so much, and then – holy crap, I got a chance to go on the road with them!” he screams. “Fill shoes that were, in my mind, so large to fill. The first show we did, I messed up one thing. I got off the stage and cried. I was like, ‘I am so bad, everyone knows that Will sucks now!’ It was the culmination of all of this stress.”

When the pandemic stopped bands from touring, Lorna Shore had time to write new material. Then came one of their most important days: June 11, 2021. This was when they announced Will as their permanent vocalist, and released brand-new song To The Hellfire .

Quite how it happened, no one seems to be able to fully articulate, but To The Hellfire went viral. TikToks and YouTube reactions popped up from nowhere, feverishly praising an unrelentingly brutal, six-minute-long deathcore song with chilling, gothic symphonic parts and a vocal breakdown that dropped the jaws of everyone – from hardened headbangers to mainstream pop fans who were discovering extreme metal for the first time. It was wild.

“When people started doing #LornaShoreChallenge, it was like… how is this trending?” Will says, his eyes bulging. “We’re literally a deathcore band, our style of music will never and has never infiltrated these people… We’re trending with the normies?! OK, this is strange.”

Strange or not, To The Hellfire currently has more than 45million streams on Spotify. Limp Bizkit ’s big comeback single, Dad Vibes , released the same year, lags 18 million streams behind. It’s one of the biggest metal songs of the decade so far. That online hype translated to the real world.

The band “suddenly got the offers of the biggest rooms”, and in London alone their March 2022 show was upgraded four times, to Camden’s 1,500-capacity Electric Ballroom. In June, the band went viral again when YouTube channel The Charismatic Voice teamed up with Will for a video in which a camera was pushed through his nose and down his throat, to record the movement of his vocal cords.

It not only showed how impressive his techniques are, but how good-natured he is, and has been watched 4 million times. All the attention must have been a dream come true and some well-deserved gratification for Adam after years of toil… right?

“I had a hard time accepting it,” the guitarist sighs. “For a while I refused to believe it was happening. It really fucked with my headspace. I felt like I should have been happier that it happened, like, ‘Why am I not grateful that this attention is all over us?’ But actually I felt like it made it harder for us to justify ourselves.”

His feelings were understandable. Online trends tend to appear, dominate the discourse and then vanish with alarming regularity. “In the back of my mind, I know bands that just come up and then they disappear,” nods Will. “People move on very quickly. I was wondering if people were still going to be hyped about us. I loved the attention, but are they going to get to next week and be like, ‘OK, what’s happening now? I don’t care about Lorna Shore!’ But… nope.”

The reason for that is almost certainly Pain Remains . Released a year after To The Hellfire , Lorna Shore’s fourth studio album – and first with Will fronting the band – is comfortably the best thing they’ve put their name to. An hour-long, 10-track masterpiece of modern deathcore, it fuses destructive, bowel-loosening riffs with genuinely stirring melodic, symphonic strings and Will’s masterful, savage vocals.

In just one year, with all the chaos that had enveloped them for over a decade, Lorna Shore had finally transitioned from well-respected scene band to major players. “One of the things that fuelled Pain Remains is that we were writing the record, and we were all thinking, ‘When is this going to go away?’” says Adam. “‘What if we’re just a flicker in a moment in time?’ So that was the inspiration for writing the album, us thinking, ‘OK, let’s make sure we don’t go away.’”

And they didn’t. The band played Parkway Drive’s European arena tour, and supported Gojira and Mastodon in US arenas and amphitheatres – a situation that Will is obviously still coming to terms with, as he loudly exclaims, “They keep putting us in these frickin’ rooms!”

Deathcore, for all its popularity, has never produced an arena band, but Lorna Shore are spending a lot of time in venues of that ilk these days. “I remember saying to our producer [Josh Schroeder (King 810, Tallah)], ‘I want to write arena songs without changing our sound.’ And he told me, ‘No way.’” Adam chuckles to himself. “He looked at me like I was nuts, like, ‘There’s really no way! You’ll have to change."

When Lorna Shore hit the stage tonight, their growth is clear to see. The lights and production are that of a major band, they are inhumanly tight, sound fantastic and, most importantly, the sea of horns and banging heads donot stop throughout. They even inspire mass singalongs. Yes, a deathcore band… and singalongs. Something here feels special, and Lorna Shore look every inch the band who will finally, singlehandedly, raise the ceiling for what deathcore can achieve.

“We never expected to be looking at these things as a possibility!” Will exclaims later. “We’re just going to think bigger, better. We have done these shows and looked at them, and it makes us go, ‘Could we, can we… do something like this ourselves?’ And we aren’t there yet, but we’re making the steps towards being there. Which for a heavy, technical deathcore band is very eye-opening.”

“I always say, ‘I want us to be the scariest ride at the amusement park,’” Adam grins. “And I want you to be able to tell your friends, ‘I survived that ride.’”

Strap yourself in – the ascent has begun.
