Best places to visit in colorado.

Colorado's scenic terrain draws millions of travelers looking to get swept up in its natural splendor. With a bevy of cities and towns, each with its own unique outdoor offerings, cultural attractions, things to do and awe-inspiring landscapes, it may be difficult to choose the best place for your next vacation. U.S. News took into account a number of factors, including the variety of attractions, as well as the opinions of experts and travelers, to determine the best places to visit in Colorado. Have a favorite? Cast your vote below to help determine next year's list.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Glenwood springs, mesa verde national park, breckenridge, steamboat springs, pagosa springs, buena vista, black canyon of the gunnison national park, crested butte, great sand dunes national park and preserve, dinosaur national monument, colorado springs.

Take a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park to see for yourself why it is one of the most-visited national parks in the country. Hike among sky-high peaks or the park's 100-plus lakes, or swap your boots for a pair of skis or snowshoes in winter. If you'd rather explore from the comfort of your own vehicle, drive the scenic Trail Ridge Road (open seasonally) and feel on top of the world. At its highest point, the road reaches an elevation of more than 12,000 feet. What's more, this park is ideal for a camping adventure . But book early: A timed entry permit is required in the summer.

Colorado's most populous city is also its cultural hub. While you can go just about anywhere in Colorado to find outdoor adventures galore, in Denver you get the best of both worlds. The city is filled with top-notch museums, lively sports venues, prime shopping streets and an unmatched brewery scene. Meanwhile, just outside city limits, you'll enjoy easy access to the Rockies, as well as the photogenic Mount Evans Scenic Byway. For an unforgettable experience, catch a show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a unique open-air concert venue with stunning views of Colorado's famous red rocks.

Telluride may not be large in size, but it is big on outdoor fun and adventure, which is why it's named one of the best small towns in the USA . Best known for its highly regarded ski slopes, Telluride offers 2,000-plus skiable acres and terrain suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. Meanwhile, hikers and cyclists flood the trails, paragliders soar through the air and festivalgoers attend the town's plethora of food-, music- and film-focused events during the warmer months. For some of Telluride's best panoramas, drive the San Juan Skyway or ride the gondola to Mountain Village.

Whether you are looking for an adventurous getaway in the Rocky Mountains or a luxurious spa vacation, this small town in northwestern Colorado fits the bill. Glenwood Springs visitors can soak up some rays while horseback riding, whitewater rafting or hiking the popular Hanging Lake Trail. If you'd like to take the thrills up a notch, make time for Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, which features cave tours, an alpine coaster and more. Later, soothe your aching muscles at one of the town's acclaimed spas, which utilize the region's natural hot springs in their treatments.

colorado trip.gov

The former home of the Ancestral Pueblo people, Mesa Verde National Park contains about 5,000 of America's best-preserved archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. First-time visitors should prioritize the famous Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Many of the sites can only be accessed by ranger-led tours that may involve quite a bit of walking, climbing and, in some cases, crawling, so travelers should keep their physical health and limitations in mind before visiting. Still, the park's rich history makes the sometimes strenuous journeys well worth the effort.

colorado trip.gov

Remnants of Breckenridge's history as a mining hub give the town a distinct aesthetic. The Rocky Mountains that serve as the town's backdrop, the Victorian-era architecture in the Historic District and the year-round festivals and events all contribute to the town's charm. Plus, the locale's thousands of acres of skiable terrain and the area's long ski season make Breckenridge a winter travel destination for the books. When the powder melts, the verdant vegetation that floods the trails make Breck (as locals call it) magical. What's more, the craft beer scene is an attraction in its own right.

colorado trip.gov

Powder hounds take note: While it may not be as glamorous as some of its Colorado counterparts, Steamboat Springs is still an excellent destination for a ski vacation . After all, it maintains the nickname of Ski Town, USA. Here, travelers can take advantage of nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain covered in snow so light it's commonly called Champagne Powder snow. Steamboat Springs is equally impressive when it's dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer or brimming with foliage come fall. After a long day of hiking, biking or shredding powder, visitors can head to Strawberry Park Hot Springs to soothe aching muscles with a massage or a soak in a thermal pool.

colorado trip.gov

Pagosa Springs' best-known attraction is – you guessed it – its renowned hot springs. Located along the banks of the San Juan River in southwestern Colorado, this small mountain town is home to the world's deepest geothermal hot spring, the Mother Spring aquifer, so it comes as no surprise that travelers flock here looking to soak their stress away. But this alluring Colorado destination has more to offer than just incredible hot springs. Here, travelers can participate in a range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, skiing, rafting, horseback riding, fishing and more.

colorado trip.gov

Sitting in southwestern Colorado about 20 miles from the New Mexico border, Durango packs a punch for adventure travelers. Pastimes like hiking, mountain biking and skiing are popular here, and thrill-seekers won't want to miss a white-water rafting tour down the Animas River. Meanwhile, history buffs will love strolling through Durango's vibrant downtown, which boasts a variety of restaurants, art galleries and shops. Another must-do activity is riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Here, travelers can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of San Juan National Forest aboard an authentic steam locomotive.

colorado trip.gov

With recreational activities galore and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, Buena Vista is one of Colorado's best under-the-radar travel destinations. Spend your time relaxing in Buena Vista's natural hot springs, which are some of the hottest in Colorado. Or, go for a drive along the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway for unforgettable mountain views. Meanwhile, if you want something more adventurous, Buena Vista is a great base for hiking 14ers (mountains exceeding 14,000 feet), and you can also try biking, off-roading or white-water rafting. Thanks to Buena Vista's valley location, these activities are typically available year-round.

Colorado's version of the Grand Canyon features some of the state's most stunning views. Carved by the Gunnison River millions of years ago, the Black Canyon's more than 2,000-foot depth has impressed spectators for centuries, including the Ute Tribe who once called the canyon home. Now, along with its incredible scenery, parkgoers can enjoy fishing in the Black Canyon's highly regarded waters, climbing its towering rock formations and hiking or skiing its impressive trails. At night, attention shifts from the rocks and river below to the sky above when visitors can stargaze in this International Dark Sky Park.

colorado trip.gov

Known as both the last great Colorado ski town and the wildflower capital of Colorado, Crested Butte beckons to outdoorsy types year-round. In winter, skiers and snowboarders will find trails for all skill levels, though the town is most famous for its extreme terrain and steep slopes. When temperatures rise, visitors can trade in their skis or snowboards for mountain bikes to take advantage of Crested Butte's hundreds of miles of bike trails. Arrive in July to see the town burst with color and partake in the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival's activities.

colorado trip.gov

Nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve offers a unique outdoor experience. Visitors can sled down the tallest sand dunes in North America or float down the park's stretch of Medano Creek. Hiking, fat biking and horseback riding are other fun ways to explore the area's diverse ecosystems. And at night, travelers can admire the unfiltered night sky while camping. Great Sand Dunes is open year-round, but keep in mind that winter can be chilly and summer can bring scorching sand and thunderstorms, so parkgoers should plan their trips accordingly.

colorado trip.gov

If you're looking to splurge during ski season, Aspen is the place to be. This small town is conveniently tucked between four renowned ski spots – Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands – that offer quality slopes for all levels of skiers. Not only that, but the town features the crème de la crème of luxury resorts, a growing culinary reputation (the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen is held here every summer) and an après-ski scene so appealing it'll be pretty tough to leave.

colorado trip.gov

This iconic European-style ski town is a popular haven for celebrities and winter sports enthusiasts. With thousands of acres of snowy trails spread across one of the largest single-mountain resorts in the country, Vail is known for its top-notch skiing and snowboarding. But there is more to the town than just its slopes. When the snow melts and the temperatures rise, Vail's Epic Discovery area invites visitors to engage in other outdoor activities like zip lining, rock climbing and mountain coaster rides. Those looking for less adrenaline-inducing entertainment should check out the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and central Vail's boutiques.

colorado trip.gov

Feel as if you've journeyed back in time during a visit to Dinosaur National Monument. Spread across Colorado and Utah, this protected area is known for its archaeological treasures. You won't find any dinosaur bones on the Colorado side, but budding archaeologists can test their skills by looking for small sea creature fossils on the Harpers Corner Trail. This side of the park is also a prime spot for outdoor activities like hiking, river rafting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. For breathtaking views of the surrounding canyons, go for a spin on the Harpers Corner Scenic Drive.

colorado trip.gov

Colorado Springs stands out from its mountainous counterparts because it's not a ski destination. But what the city lacks in slopes it more than makes up for in incredible hiking areas like Pikes Peak, the mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful," and magnificent natural landmarks like the Garden of the Gods. Mix that in with a good helping of small-town charm, delectable restaurants and a diverse array of attractions (including the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center), and Colorado Springs has all the makings of a great vacation.

colorado trip.gov

Although Boulder is Denver's slightly smaller neighbor, it is no less impressive. With both the Rocky Mountains and the Flatirons in the background, Boulder combines all of the relaxation of an outdoor escape with the energy of a city. Nature lovers will feel right at home while hiking and biking the city's trails or tubing down its stretch of Boulder Creek. Those looking for more urban entertainment can explore Boulder's beer trails or shop and dine at Pearl Street Mall's boutiques and restaurants.

Great App… BUT

We love this app, and use it all the time! It only has one MAJOR thank you flaw! The colors on the map for road conditions are to close, and therefore, are very hard to distinguish, especially for those with vision issues. Please fix this and choose bright colors that are very different from each other for each of the road conditions. If that is done, this app immediately becomes a 5 Star App! Until then, it gets a three… Barely!

Developer Response ,

Thank you - we appreciate your comments! This feedback is helpful as we continue to improve our system.

Front Range/ West Side Story

COTrip. Org is my go to whether planning a trip or for a last minute run to Denver International Airport. Having to cross the Rockies over a high pass and a tunnel/ pass does make it interesting. Not to mention that the drive takes you through very popular ski areas (cross roads to even more of them and other outdoor destinations,) and it’s the heart of the commercial route from the eastern and western part of our nation. For all of these reasons and because of our extreme weather I use the CO trip website (and the the trip planner, now!) There have been times that weather has caused delays but we have the resource in this service to make informed decisions and arrive to our destination safely, albeit a little late. Other road conditions and closures can be monitored on the maps many layers, as well as, on cameras along the route. For all these reasons COTrip is a godsend and a very import state service. Add a thermos of coffee and appropriate sound track and I’m ready to go.

Two levels of terrible

There are two levels of terrible here. One is the app itself. The user interface designers made inexplicable choices. More importantly, CDOT’s data flow into this system makes the app mostly worthless. The timeliness, quality, and quantity of information CDOT feeds into the system of their lit road information signs, website, and app means that even a finely polished app would be useless. I get it. It’s challenging. CDOT is one thing, local dispatch another, reality on the ground yet a third. But CDOT is mostly useful as an agency for awarding various contracts (including to make an app). The actual value added by, say, having employees who can use their creativity and skills to integrate these data streams better to make CDOT’s road information system better, is close to 0. Don’t worry – CDOT can award a contract for that (to someone who doesn’t really get it).
Hi! Thank you for your comments - we are sorry to hear that your experience using the COtrip app has been a terrible one. We'd love to learn more about how you are using the app so we can get you the information you need. Please reach out to [email protected] if you are willing to chat.

Cdot launches new, user-friendly road condition and travel planner website and mobile app.

Screenshot of the new interactive map with customizable layers on cotrip.org.

New features to the interactive map on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s COtrip.org are intended to make it easier for drivers to safely navigate Colorado roads.

CDOT  launched the updated website Sept. 29, touting new tools that will help travelers plan their route in advance and be prepared for road or lane closures or adverse road conditions. COtrip.org has been in use for nearly two decades.

“This is an exciting time for our agency,” said Bob Fifer, CDOT’s branch manager of the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services. “We are evolving legacy systems to better serve the traveling public. The new website brings more of our transportation technologies into one lense, improving the customer experience. We added several new features, while reducing system maintenance costs. Now, travelers can customize routes from point A to point B to see if their trip may be impacted by any road or lane closures. Motorists will have an easier time identifying road closures, road conditions and construction impacts, all while replacing outdated technologies.”

The new website incorporates the following new features:

Traveler Information & Layers

The COtrip website is powered by a dynamic Google Map™. Motorists can use the map as they would any Google map and click on the icons for more information. Icons are displayed on the map by checking or unchecking the boxes in the layers toolbar. Layers available and what data they provide are described here.

Trucker’s Layers

The new Trucker Mode features resources specific to commercial motor vehicle operators, including the following layers defined here.

My COtrip & Travel Alerts

Motorists can log-in in or sign up here for their own COtrip account to subscribe and manage their travel alerts. They can also save their favorite routes and cameras, and customize their travel preferences.

COtrip on Social Media

COtrip traveler information is automatically posted to the @ColoradoDOT Twitter feed. New roadway hashtags and Twitter threads were rolled out in Spring 2021, making it easier for users to track and stay updated on closures and incidents from CDOT. Follow @ColoradoDOT on Twitter for real-time travel information and road conditions.

511 Telephone Service

The 511 telephone service is an interactive, voice-activated traffic information system motorists can access by calling 511 (within Colorado) or 1-800-288-1047 (nationwide). This system has not changed, and will continue to provide a real-time option for travelers to get road conditions and traffic information. Learn more about 511 and how to use this service here.

“The updated website will be a great new tool for the public, however, we also wanted to bring the same information to your mobile device. ” said Fifer. “With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that we are also launching a brand new mobile app on Oct. 1. Now travelers will be conveniently informed no matter where they go. We are committed to continuously improving access to highway information and technologies.”

The new COtrip Planner mobile app was designed to meet the growing trend of information on mobile and tablet devices for the traveling public. The COtrip Planner app provides statewide, real-time traffic information, and works on smartphones and tablets that operate on iOS and Android platforms. Download the app in the Apple Store or Google Play Store starting on Oct. 1.

The app will be fully implemented in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Oct. 1

Traveler app with hands-free, eyes free functionality with customized CDOT layers now available

  • Phase 2: Fall 2021

Winter-specific layers including weather warnings, weather stations, plow tracker with CDOT snowplow contest names, and Express Lanes

  • Phase 3: Winter 2021/2022

My COtrip accounts integrated and new map search functionality, including event and camera clustering, predefined routes/areas, and adding an electronic sign layer

Social sharing of cameras and road conditions will also be available

  • Future State

Turn-by-turn directions and recommended routes to user mapping app (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze)

Alert banners and push notifications

Rockfall and wildlife reporting

The COtrip Planner app also includes a feature called TellMe, which enables app users to be hands-free on their route. TellMe detects the user’s current location, speed and direction of travel to announce upcoming road conditions and traffic incidents as they travel along their route.

“We want Coloradans and visitors to our great state to have all of the information they need to plan a safe trip, no matter where they go on our state highways and interstates,” said Fifer. “We hope all drivers will take advantage of the website and mobile app before getting into their vehicles for a safe and more convenient trip as both tools will help to eliminate any ‘surprises’ on the roadway.”

Colorado is home to four stunning national parks to visit–and despite the Centennial State’s reputation for its incredible Rocky Mountain landscapes, each park is incredibly unique and well worth a visit!

Rocky Mountain National Park

Welcoming more than 3 million visitors each year, Rocky Mountain National Park is not only the state’s most popular national park, it’s easily one of the top places to visit in Colorado as a whole!

From snowcapped mountains to alpine lakes, and from challenging hikes to relaxing scenic drives, Rocky Mountain National Park has options for all kinds of travelers–the only thing you truly need to justify a visit is an appreciation for alpine beauty.

vertical photo of dream lake in rocky mountains national park hiking trail

Some of the most popular things to do in RMNP include visiting Bear Lake, hiking to Emerald Lake and Dream Lake, driving the beautiful Trail Ridge Road, and checking out Old Fall River Road (either by car or by foot depending on the season).

If you’re visiting in winter, don’t worry, much of the park is still accessible–just be prepared to lace up your cross country skis to visit some of the most popular lakes!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

From Megan of Red Around the World

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park  is an often-overlooked national park in Gunnison, Colorado–but if you add it to your list of beautiful places in Colorado to visit, there’s no doubt that you’ll be blown away.

It is one of the deepest canyons in North America at 8,043 feet deep.  It’s hard to imagine that, even when you’re there looking at it.  It’s easiest to visit the South Rim just outside of Gunnison which is also where you can access the river at the bottom of the canyon.

There is also access to the North Rim which is perfect if you want to get away from the already meager crowds.

Keep in mind that though the two rims look close to each other on a map, they’re a couple hours worth of driving apart.

black canyon of the gunnison as seen from above with river to the right, one of the bucket list colorado places to visit

While the park isn’t bursting with hiking trails, there are quite a few to choose from and just as many amazing viewpoints to stop at.

Keep your eyes peeled for bears while you’re exploring the park.

Even if you just have a couple of hours, it’s totally worth visiting.  Most of the trails are short, under three miles round-trip.

The Oak Flat Loop Trail is great for people looking to hike below the rim but not all the way to the river.  It’s two miles round-trip and can be narrow in some places, so be careful.

Also make sure to drive down to the river, even if just for the experience.

Mesa Verde National Park

From James of Parks Collecting

Mesa Verde National Park  is home to 600 cliff dwellings.

The Ancient Puebloans built their villages in overhangs in the side of steep cliffs and climbed down from above, using hand and footholds carved directly into the cliff.

Today, you can see many of them from overlooks at the top of the mesa and see some of them up close on guided tours.  Bear in mind that you need to climb down ladders or steep steps to visit them.

view of cliff dwellings in mesa verde national park from inside the cliff

The cliff dwellings are truly incredible to see.  Highlights include Cliff Palace (the largest), Long House, and Balcony House (where you need to crawl through a very narrow tunnel to exit).

Each year, some of the other dwellings are also opened up to small group visits, with a ranger as a guide.  You need to hike to these, and often climb down the original hand and footholds (with the help of modern-day chains to make it safer).

Whether you see the cliff dwellings from overlooks, on a guided tour, or a small group back-country hike, you are sure to be fascinated by them.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

From Rai of A Rai of Light

Great Sand Dunes National Park, found in the Saguache and Alamosa Counties of southern Colorado, encompasses more than 100,000 acres of open-air adventure.

The fascination not only lies with the tallest sand dunes in North America, but also the surrounding landscape that features forests, snow-capped mountains, and rivers.

There is so much to do that 3 days is the minimum number of days to spend in and around the surrounding area. Top sights in the preserve include High Dune, Zapata Falls, Medano Pass.

young woman hiking on a sand dune in great sand dunes national park, a bucket list colorado travel destinations

Sandboarding is a popular activity and should not be missed. Other activities worth trying include sledding, horseback riding, and hiking to catch a beautiful sunrise .

The park is always open and no reservations are required. However, the best time to visit is during spring and fall.

The closest town is Mosca, but the park is easily reached from any major city as the San Luis Valley Airport is a mere 45-minute drive from the park’s entrance.

Known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, the charming small town of Estes Park easily ranks among the best places to visit in Colorado.

With its beautiful downtown (don’t miss a chance to stroll along the riverwalk!), its huge prevalance of elk living in and around the town, its beautiful lake, and the world-class nature of nearby hiking opportunities, Estes Park belongs on any Colorado bucket list.

colorado trip.gov

While in Estes Park, be sure to stop by the historic Park Theatre, consider a whitewater rafting trip, go for a scenic drive, check out one of the town’s breweries, and pay a visit to the beautiful Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining.

Even if you don’t check in, the hotel is still worth a peak!

And, of course, the main attraction lies just outside of town: no trip to Estes Park is complete without plenty of time spent in Rocky Mountain National Park!

Where to Stay in Estes Park

  • Mountain Shadows Resort: Get into the rustic feel with these incredible cottages in Estes Park. Cottages have private terraces, hot tubs and wooden 4-poster beds.
  • Hotel Estes : These fabulous pet friendly cabins are close to Rocky Mountain National Park with mountain views, great facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool for those warmer months.

Crested Butte

From Martina + Jurgen of PlacesofJuma

Crested Butte in the Rocky Mountains is probably one of the most recommended places to visit in Colorado.

It is famous as a ski resort and is also considered to be the capital of wildflowers, making Crested Butte a fantastic year-round travel destination in Colorado.

In winter, the challenging ski slopes attract the best skiers and snowboarders. The cross-country ski trails, which are located around the city, add a special beauty to the unique landscape.

wildflowers in the mountains at sunset near crested butte, one of the best places to see in colorado

In the warm months, mountain bikers and hikers come to experience the unique nature of the region and the splendor of the flowers.

But not only is the surrounding nature gorgeous, but the town is also pretty too!

Crested Butte is an extremely pedestrian-friendly town, and walking around, you will discover picturesque historical buildings, great restaurants, and plenty of mountain views.

We also recommend a visit in July, when the famous Crested Butte Wildflower Festival takes place.

Where to Stay in Crested Butte

  • Nordic Inn: This comfortable hotel is a great place to rest after exploring. There is a Great Room with complimentary games and views over Mt. Crested Butte, there is also a large hot tub to enjoy. Rooms are spacious and really cosy.

Steamboat Springs

From Liz of Peanuts or Pretzels

Steamboat Springs might be a popular ski town in Colorado and home to many former Olympians, but a visit here can feel less like your typical Colorado ski resort vacation and more like an adventure.

This is a town with a vibrant local community, humorous traditions, and lively Western history.

After all of that winter fun, take a soothing dip in one of the  hot springs around town , such as Strawberry Hot Springs, a local favorite for its natural scenery tucked back in a canyon.

There is a flaw in this article, Grand Lake is a very nice small mountain town. And yes there is a lake called Grand Lake, but the big lake is called Lake Granby.

Not a flaw. Lake Granby is man-made. The article states that Grand Lake is the largest natural lake in CO, which is in fact, true.

I can’t believe Ouray wasn’t on the list.

Tourist from back east has visited Ouray several times. Great area to visit, hike and view mountains. Definitely an oversite! Friendly. Great camping nearby Norman and Linda

This brings back memories. Thank you so much.

16 of the best things to do in Colorado

With more than 300 glorious days of sun and majestic landscapes to match, it’s no wonder Colorado beckons to outdoorsy types .

You'll find adventures to be had in just about every corner of the state, from hiking trails and white water rapids to world-class mountain resorts and towering sand dunes.

But Colorado offers more than adrenaline rushes and Instagram moments. It’s also known for its layers of history, its vibrant art and music scene, its cowboy culture and tasty craft brews. Here are the best things to do in Colorado that showcase the variety the state has to offer.

1. Enjoy the fall colors in Aspen

Just beyond the cowboy-meets-Hollywood glam of Aspen , the twin Maroon Bell mountains rise dramatically over a long mirrored lake. Surrounded by thick aspen groves, fall brings a sea of fluttering yellow and orange leaves. It’s sublime, a dream and one of the best places in the state to see fall colors .

Planning tip: The trail near the lake can get crowded this time of year, especially in late September when the leaves are at their peak. Arrive before 8am for a parking spot, some solitude and the best chance at seeing wildlife. Otherwise, take the shuttle from town and hike deep into the aspen groves towards Crater Lake to take in the beauty without the crowd.

Ancient dwellings carved into rock

2. Explore ancient cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde National Park is a one-of-a-kind place, the largest and best-preserved Native American archaeological site in the US. Nestled in a stunning landscape of canyons and mesas near the  Four Corners region, Mesa Verde is home to more than 5000 Ancestral Puebloan sites that developed over hundreds of years before being abruptly abandoned in 1300CE for reasons still unknown.

What remains is one of the most exhilarating adventures in the West: clambering down ladders, crawling through tight tunnels and peering into elaborate cliff dwellings, all to puzzle over what life was once like here.

3. Hike in Rocky Mountain National Park

If there’s any place that’s quintessentially Colorado, it’s  Rocky Mountain National Park . Every view is a picture postcard: a vast landscape of granite peaks and shimmering lakes, flower-filled meadows and dense forests.

But it’s no secret that RMNP can get jam-packed, especially in summer. Lose the crowds by leaving the roadside viewpoints and lacing up your hiking boots instead.

The park has 300 miles of trails catering to all levels of ability and ambition, from an easy stroll around Bear Lake to an epic trek up Longs Peak. Impressive vistas and perfect solitude also can be found on hundreds of thousands of acres of backcountry, areas home to herds of elk, scattered bighorn sheep, black bears and more.

The exterior of a historic wooden-boarded post office building in an abandoned town

4. Visit the ghost town of St Elmo

Following a bumpy dirt road to the abandoned mining settlement of St Elmo, it’s easy to imagine the prospectors who plied this same roadway, following tales of precious metal found deep in the Rockies. Tucked into the base of the Collegiate Peaks, St Elmo is Colorado’s best-preserved ghost town.

More than 40 buildings are still standing, most dating to the 1880s when the town hit its apex. Wandering past the saloon, billiards hall, courthouse and jail, visitors get a peek into Colorado’s past, when gold and silver ruled these hills. It serves as a modern-day reminder of the quick riches and busted dreams of the past, the making and breaking of the West.

5. Throw back a Colorado craft brew

Colorado takes its beer seriously, treating craft brewing like a high art. Almost any town you visit – from tiny Del Norte to beer-centric Fort Collins – has a favorite local brew or two (or 20). One thing’s for sure: you won’t go thirsty for an IPA in Colorado.

Planning tip: If you’re here in September, try to score tickets to the  Great American Beer Festival . Held in Denver, the festival draws more than 1000 master brewers from across the nation, vying for Best of Show medals in categories like Best Coffee Beer, Best Barrel-Aged Strong Beer and many more. Best of all is the camaraderie of you and 60,000 beer buddies, all tasting outstanding beers one ounce at a time.

An amphitheatre built into rock

6. Catch a concert at Red Rocks

There’s something about attending a concert at  Red Rocks : the sounds of instruments and song, the sight of people dancing, an umbrella of dark sky above and the iconic 400ft-high red sandstone monoliths standing guard on either side. Once a sacred gathering place of the Ute tribe, today Red Rocks is world renowned for its natural acoustics and stunning beauty, a one-of-a-kind amphitheater.

It’s no surprise big name bands like The Beatles, U2, Jimi Hendrix and The Grateful Dead have played and recorded albums here and that the venue continues to draw the world’s best musicians and performers. Just 15 miles from Denver, it’s easily accessible, too.

Planning tip: Do like locals do and catch the sunset before the show.

7. Soak in Glenwood Hot Springs

Perched at the end of a gorgeous canyon at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers, present-day Glenwood Hot Springs have been treasured for their healing properties for centuries. Long before the arrival of Europeans, the Ute bathed in these same steamy thermal waters, which they called yampah (great medicine).

Today, a historic resort sits on the site, the hot springs pumping out 3.5 million gallons of mineral water a day, flowing through two pools, one a whopping 400ft long.

Planning tip:  Temperatures range from 93°F to 104°F, warm enough to soak in even on a snowy January day. Bring your swimsuit and, if need be, your ski hat.

8. Drive the Million Dollar Highway

Deep in the San Juan Mountains, the Million Dollar Highway connects the towns of Ouray and Silverton, is a mind-blowingly scenic drive, and one of Colorado’s best road trips . Twenty five miles of hairpin turns and tight S-bends cut through the Uncompahgre Gorge, whose steep mountainsides loom large and close, rising into lofty, mist-shrouded peaks, while the valley floor lies far below, dotted with fir trees and wildflowers.

Planning tip: Drive with caution. The road is formidable, even in good weather, and the lack of guardrails doesn’t help. Take advantage of pullouts. The Red Mountain Pass (11,018ft) is a favorite for its 360-degree views.

9. Hula hoop in Telluride

It supposedly all started back in the '90s when Colorado ski-bum band String Cheese Incident started chucking hula hoops into the crowd at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Festival-goers turned the toys into dance partners, and the fad stuck. You can count on a large contingent of "hoopers" at every Telluride Bluegrass Festival show.

It’s just one of the many odd-ball pleasures of this amazing celebration of folk music and mountain life, held in  Telluride every summer and drawing big-name bands and thousands of revelers. Telluride itself is stunningly beautiful, nestled in a narrow box canyon, surrounded on three sides by rugged peaks and even a waterfall. It's not easy to get to, but it's well worth the effort.

Great Sand Dunes National Park sits like a surreal work of art next to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, an undulating dune field covering more than 30 square miles, its sandy peaks reaching hundreds of feet above the brush-covered valley floor. Climbing the dunes can be slow going – one step forward and a half step back in the ever-shifting sand – but that makes sand surfing down all the sweeter.

Special wood boards definitely make for the best ride, and they can be rented from the  Great Sand Dunes Oasis just outside the park or in nearby Alamosa. Sport your ski goggles and long socks, if you got ‘em – the sand gets everywhere.

Planning tip: If you’re here in late spring, count yourself lucky. The Medano Creek emerges temporarily alongside the dunes, creating a beach for water play, tubing and, of course, sandcastle-making.

11. Discover Denver’s street art

Unexpected and totally fabulous, Denver ’s trendiest neighborhood, RiNo (River North) – a one-time industrial wasteland that's now the heart of cool – is draped in murals covering every sort of surface, from restaurant doorways and parking lot walls to alleyways, power boxes and garage doors.

Bright, opinionated and ever-changing, the artwork stops you in your tracks, speaking volumes about Denver’s diversity of people and thought, and its history and day-to-day life. Prepare to be wowed.

12. Paddle the Arkansas River

Brace yourself for icy waters as you paddle into a roaring set of waves on the Arkansas River, one of the longest and wildest rivers in the state. With more than 150 miles of open water running from Leadville to the scenic Royal Gorge, the Arkansas has everything from extreme rapids to mellow ripples and includes the iconic class-II run through Browns Canyon National Monument.

Planning tip: The best paddling happens between late May and early July. Pick up a trip in Buena Vista or Cañon City.

13. Ski Vail, the state's best ski resort

You might think  Vail is merely a playground for the rich and famous, and not a serious ski resort. Think again: beyond the glitz and glam (and shocking prices), Vail is truly one of the world’s finest ski resorts, boasting more than 5000 skiable acres, 195 trails, and some of the best on- and off-piste terrain anywhere.

The front side is a paradise of silky corduroy – Vail’s groomers are artists indeed – ranging from mellow greens to long rowdy black diamonds like Blue Ox. But don’t miss the backside, especially the legendary Blue Sky Basin and seven – count ‘em, seven – bowls. There’s so much steep ’n deep that you’ll lose track of what you’ve skied or ridden. Colorado has many outstanding ski resorts, true, but Vail will steal your heart.

Man touching dinosaur bones at Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado

14. Touch dinosaur bones

A must-see stop for dinophiles is  Dinosaur National Monument , located in the desolate northwest corner of Colorado. It’s one of the few places on Earth where you can actually reach out and touch a dinosaur skeleton, snarling in its final pose, petrified eternally in rock and stone.

Home to one the largest fossil beds in North America, the dinosaur quarry here also shows off some 1500 prehistoric bones embedded in a cliff face. You’ll see everything from allosaurus to stegosaurus.

Planning tip: Ranger-led walks, talks and tours explain the site, and a bunch of hands-on exhibits add to the fun.

15. Summit a fourteener

Standing at the peak of a 14,000ft mountain, taking in the view from the top of the world, is practically a rite of passage in Colorado. The state’s 50-plus " fourteeners " offer access and challenge to all levels of hikers, from those reachable only with technical climbing expertise to the two peaks with roads right to the top.

Whether you decide to drive to the top of  Pikes Peak (or take the cog train), hike the 3-mile trail to Quandary Peak near Breckenridge or make a run at Mt Elbert (the tallest of them all), they all deliver big.

16. Sport your Stetson at the National Western Stock Show

Saddle up for one of the country’s biggest stock shows – the  National Western Stock Show – a Denver tradition since 1906. Held every January, come here for more than 20 rodeos, 15,000 farm animals, dancing horses, dog shows and even yoga with baby goats.

Don’t miss the iconic kick-off parade, when dozens of Longhorn cattle are herded right through downtown Denver, high heels and power suits giving way to cowboy hats, chaps and impressive belt buckles.

The Ultimate Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

From hiking in national parks to exploring charming towns, here's what to see and do on a road trip through Colorado.

colorado trip.gov

To experience the best of the U.S. via the great open road, look to Colorado. This picturesque state straddling the Rocky Mountains is home to some of the most astounding stretches of highway in the country, connecting mountain resorts and artists' colonies to pioneer towns. In short, it's the perfect place for the ultimate road trip. With that in mind, we've devised a route that hits plenty of spots that make the Centennial State so special.

Our itinerary takes you through three spectacular national parks: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes. While the last one doesn't require an admission fee, the first two do ($30 per car, including entry for all passengers, for one day or $35 per car for seven days of access). As of May 24, 2024, you must reserve a timed pass to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. If you're interested in purchasing an America the Beautiful annual pass, which gets you into all U.S. national parks and federal recreational lands, check each park's website below for more information about discounts for seniors, military members, and those with permanent disabilities.

Without further ado, here's our handy guide to everything you should do on a Colorado road trip.

Colorado's capital and biggest city is inevitably where any road trip should start. Not only is Denver home to the state's largest and busiest airport, and therefore where most travelers arrive, it also acts as a gateway from the plains in the east into the Rocky Mountains. There's plenty to do here before you start your journey: Grab some green chiles at El Taco de Mexico, explore historic Larimer Square, go to one of the city's great museums — the Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science are great places to start — and perhaps buy yourself a pair of cowboy boots. Whatever you do, make sure your last activity is getting in your car and driving northwest.

Denver's smaller, more free-spirited sibling Boulder is home to the University of Colorado's main campus, which means you can expect a whole lot of restaurants and businesses catering to college students. You'll also find some sublime hiking on and around the Flatirons , an iconic formation formed by dramatic, diagonally tilted slabs of rock.

Tanya Nikolic / Travel + Leisure

Your journey northwest continues to Estes Park, the first destination on this route wholly within the Rocky Mountains. This quaint town has become a popular tourist stop, due to its proximity to some of the region's best rock climbing and mountain trails. Estes Park is also considered the jumping-off point for much of Rocky Mountain National Park , where you can easily spend several days exploring backwoods trails, finding waterfalls, and spotting wildlife. This part of the itinerary is optional, but definitely encouraged if you have the time.

Trail Ridge Road

If you're road-tripping between May and October, you're in luck. The next portion of the route contains what is considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in America: Trail Ridge Road , a switchback-saturated stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that crosses over the Continental Divide and is closed during the fall and winter. In the spring and summer, you can pass through some of the region's highest mountains. Witness the sun glinting off glaciers as you weave through dramatic passes and drive along impossibly blue ponds until you reach Grand Lake. Refuel, then it's onto the next oasis.

Glenwood Springs

The aptly named Glenwood Springs is the hot spring capital of the area, with huge natural hot springs bubbling up from the earth. It's just what you want to see after a long drive from Grand Lake, and a particularly scenic remedy for driving-related cramps. The town is located right where the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers meet, in a valley cradled by steep mountain faces.

Telluride and Ouray

Gallo Images / Getty Images

Drive a few hours from Glenwood Springs and you'll enter gold rush territory. Sure, you can try panning in the Uncompahgre or San Miguel Rivers — it's a good way to cool off, but maybe not to get rich — though the real draw in Telluride and Ouray is the history. These little mountain villages are chock-full of relics from the area's Wild West days, from museums like the Ouray Alchemist Pharmacy Museum to mining tours in Telluride. They're also both tucked away in furtive, but gorgeous, canyons. You can hit Telluride, which is larger, more bustling, and artsier (it's also home to the Telluride Film Festival ), or Ouray, which is smaller and more rustic. Either way, we're venturing south.

Mesa Verde National Park

Continuing south, you'll trade the gold rush era for more ancient times at Mesa Verde National Park . These lands in Montezuma County were once inhabited by the cliff-dwelling ancestors of the Pueblo people, who constructed homes out of the sandstone from the cliffs and mesas on which they were built. The result is extraordinarily dramatic and incredibly enlightening. While there are hundreds of these sites throughout the park, the most impressive is Cliff Palace, pictured above, which lies in the shadow of a magnificent rock arch. Check out its elaborate rooms and the decorative plasters, all of which have withstood erosion and time.

Beginning our turn east, Durango is the first major town on the map after leaving Mesa Verde. It's a great place to stop and rest for a while, combining the laid-back charm of small-town America with a rich history rooted in its importance as a railroad hub. It has also served as the backdrop in many Hollywood Western films , and you can visit several shooting locations from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Visuals Unlimited / Getty Images

Drive three hours down Route 160 and you'll arrive in a place that feels so otherworldly, you'll feel like you're on another planet. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve seems totally incongruous with the landscape around it, but that's what makes it so enticing — towering, ivory-colored dunes up to 750 feet tall are an echo of the nearby mountains. Camping here is the move, as the effect of the clear night sky over the dunes is a popular astronomical phenomenon that must be seen to be believed.

There's no better place in Colorado to witness the awe-inspiring force of water than Cañon City, so named for the steep cliffs carved by the Arkansas River. Whether you're looking for a gentle, comfortable sightseeing experience like the Royal Gorge Route Railroad or a more extreme method like rafting, you'll find it here, in addition to plenty of wineries and restaurants where you can luxuriate after feasting your eyes.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is the last stop on your vehicular journey, and it's a bit of a doozy. Not only is this the second-largest city in the state, it's also a stone's throw from two of Colorado's most impressive natural landmarks: Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods . The first can be easily ascended by car via Pikes Peak Highway, and the views from its 14,115-foot summit are truly magnificent — they actually inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write " America the Beautiful ." The second, Garden of the Gods, is a gorgeous public park that combines strikingly red rocks with lush forest scenery.

After indulging in your outdoor activity of choice, end your trip with green chiles at King's Chef Diner and bask in the success of a road trip well spent. If you're returning to Denver to fly home, it's just an hour's drive or so north to reach the airport.

Best scenic drives Colorado

This list of Colorado drives includes a bit of everything – alpine lakes, jagged cliffs, winding roads, sand dunes, frozen tundras and of course, some of the best drives for fall foliage in the USA.

This guide includes maps of the best Colorado drives, a packing list to make sure you have the essentials and details on the top 12 scenic routes in Colorado.

As someone who’s been to Colorado more times than I can count, I’ve loved exploring this beautiful state. In fact, it’s one of my favorites on this list of west coast road trips USA . Unfortunately, I haven’t been everywhere (yet), so I’ve asked a few fellow travel writers to help out with this list.

Let’s dive in!

Scenic drives Colorado map

Here’s a map of the best Colorado drives. Because there’s 12 awesome scenic routes on this list and the map only allows 10, I’ve created a map for scenic drives Denver and scenic drives Colorado Springs in the sections below, too.

Pinch and zoom to find more details on these routes. Save the map offline before you head out in case you don’t have reception as you drive.

What to pack for these beautiful Colorado drives

Let’s go over a few essentials to make the best experiences for your adventures!

  • Food and snacks. Whether you’re planning 2 hours or 2 days on these fun scenic drives around Colorado, you’ll want to be prepared with food. Check out these road trip food ideas . Oh, and don’t forget to pack a reusable water bottle !
  • Collapsible cooler. You know you’ll need it for the snacks and beverages! I like this collapsible cooler because it folds down for traveling and storage, plus keeps food and drinks cold when you need it.
  • Extra layers. Many of these scenic drives Colorado go up in elevation, where the weather can change dramatically very quickly. Take a rain jacket and medium coat or heavier depending on time of year.
  • Sunblock. At 10,000 feet, the sun can be 50% more powerful due to the thin air. Wear sunscreen when you’re venturing out of the vehicle to protect your skin.
  • Hiking gear. There’s so many phenomenal sights in Colorado and stretching your legs during a road trip always feels good! Some of these guides include hiking trails. Be sure to pack the right hiking shoes with traction , trekking poles (always helpful) and a hiking backpack to carry water, first aide kit and any other items you need.
  • Bear spray. The Rocky Mountains are home to black bears and grizzly bears. Some of these scenic drives go through areas that are bear habitats. This is the bear spray I take with me to Colorado (and I’ve taken to Mt Rainier National Park , on hikes like Avalanche Lake in Glacier NP and more). You can’t fly with it so pack it if you’re driving in, or grab some in Colorado before you venture out.
  • GoPro for epic photos and videos. I used to think a phone on my camera was sufficient when traveling. But then I a GoPro and started recording epic road trips , snorkeling with sea turtles and so much more. This is the GoPro I use and it works perfect for traveling!
  • Kids road trip activities. If you’re traveling with kids of any age, make sure to bring games, snacks and screens to keep the boredom to a minimum. We always travel with Fire tablets , pre-loaded with games when my kids were young and even now.

Best Colorado drives

Eeek! I’m so excited for you to go on these amazing adventures. Gorgeous views are everywhere in Colorado.

1. Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park (one of my favorite scenic drives Colorado)

view of mountains and valley with snow peaks blue sky and green valley

Distance: 48 miles Estimated time: 4 – 6 hours Route open: summer, typically Memorial Day to mid-October

It’s one of the best Colorado drives on this list! The Rocky Mountain National Park is a perfect vacation destination in Colorado, and one of the state’s top tourist destinations.

Note: because of its popularity, you’ll need a timed entry reservation through the NPS .

Connecting Estes Park to Grand Lake, The Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is a must-see for anyone looking for mountain views. You could technically do this drive in a day trip from Denver, but it’s best done over 2 or 3 days.

Start your drive on the Trail Ridge Road in Estes Park and end in Grand Lake. You can plan a day in Estes Park and a day in Grand Lake, with endless things to do in either city!

In Estes Park, get amazing views of the Rocky Mountains by riding the Estes Park Aerial Tramway . Or for adrenaline lovers, check out the Open Air Adventure Park .

Grand Lake is more of a hidden gem in Colorado, and one of the most underrated travel destinations in the US ! Its cute downtown is great for grabbing food and boutique shopping. And of course, lake activities like kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding are the area’s main draw.

Driving Trial Ridge Road really only takes 1.5 hours if you’re going straight through. But of course you’re going to stop at lookouts and even take a hike our 2 – if you’re up for it!

Of the 48 miles, 11 of them are above the tree line. So it gets really cold!

The first time I visited Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) it was July and we saw tons of snow and needed coats! This medium coat is excellent for hiking and sightseeing in the mountains.

Best drives in Colorado: Trail Ridge Road stops

  • Forest Canyon Overlook , for incredible views of Mt Ida and Long’s Peak.

  • Alpine Visitor Center. Hike the Alpine Ridge Trial or grab hot cocoa and enjoy the view.
  • Gore Range Overlook , for some of my personal favorite views of RMNP.
  • Farview Curve Viewpoint. If you’re lucky enough to see snowy peaks, this stop is postcard worthy.
  • Coyote Valley Trailhead , if you’re up for a scenic walk surrounded by mountains.

Distance: 236 miles Estimated time: 7+ hours Route open: year-round

The San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway is one of the best Colorado drives! It’s a 236-mile-long loop and takes about 7 hours to drive the entire thing. You’ll definitely want to spend more time seeing the incredible sights along the way.

Make it 2-3 days, or even longer to make drive this incredible Colorado scenic byway. The route is open year-round but can be temporarily closed in the winter due to snow and dangerous driving conditions.

There are plenty of things to see and do along the way. Some of the popular towns are Durango, Silverton, Ouray and Telluride.

4. Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway: Leadville to Aspen via Independence Pass

views of the colorado drives with valley and green trees with mountain peaks in the distance

Distance: 60 miles Estimated time: 3 – 5 hours Route open: Memorial Day through October

Leadville to Aspen is one of the most popular Colorado scenic byways that takes you over Independence Pass with stunning views of the Rocky Mountains.  This stretch of road is part of the larger route, named the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway.

Begin your road trip in Leadville, the highest town in North America by elevation that sits at 10,152 feet and is a former silver mining camp. The frontier history is alive and well in Leadville. You could spend some time wandering around its downtown, made up from the Victorian-era buildings after grabbing some food.

National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is one of the most popular museums in town and you can learn some interesting history here.

You can also spot several “fourteeners” from Leadville, like Mount Elbert and Mount Massive.

Next, drive toward the Independence Pass where you’ll want to make a couple of stops to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and take some photos. This is really one-of-a-kind experience, so take your time enjoying the drive!

When you arrive in Aspen you’ll see why it’s one of the best mountain towns in Colorado . Enjoy one of the best places to visit in Colorado that has become renowned for its ski resorts and year-round outdoor opportunities.

Spend at least a couple of days in Aspen to explore its wonderful hikes such as Sunnyside Trail or the Rio Grande Trail that can be accessed from downtown Aspen.

5. Ouray to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

scenic drives colorado view of a huge canyon with jagged cliffs looking down to river below

Distance: 55 miles Estimated time: 4+ hours Route open: Ouray to BCGNP is open year round, but expect some park closures during winter

One of the best scenic drives in Colorado is from  Ouray into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park , passing through the Uncompahgre National Forest and the San Juan Mountain range. The San Juan Mountains are the southern part of the Rockies, with many peaks towering above 14,000 feet.

The drive begins in Ouray, known as the “Switzerland of America” since it sits in a box canyon almost completely surrounded by jagged snow-capped mountains.

This quaint town offers mountain biking, hiking and 4WD off-road trails in the summer. In the winter there is skiing, ice climbing and ice skating. And with all the natural hot springs in Ouray, you can easily warm up after spending a day in the snow!

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at one of Ouray’s cute B&B’s, begin the 1 hour drive north to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison on US-550.

Feel free to plan a stop at one of the pubs or cafes in Ridgway, a cute rural town right off the highway. If you’re planning this scenic Colorado drive for the fall season, you’ll be surrounded by bright gold and orange Aspen trees the entire route which is breathtaking!

Plan on spending several hours inside Black Canyon National Park. Many of the trails are short and you can drive through the park starting at the South Rim Visitor Center, which is open daily throughout the summer and most days of the week the rest of the year.

The South Rim Road beyond Gunnison Point is closed to vehicles in winter. The South Rim Drive is 7 miles starting from Tomichi Point to High Point and has 12 overlooks. Allow a 2-3 hour drive to view the main overlooks, since every turn gives you a new view of the gigantic canyon!

After a day exploring the canyon, head back towards Ouray for the night. And if you’re looking for more road trip ideas, Ouray marks the beginning of the Million Dollar Highway, one of the most beautiful and dangerous drives in the U.S.!

6. Dillon to Leadville (one of the best scenic routes in Colorado)

lake with trees and mountains in distance on partly cloudy sky

Distance: 35 miles Estimated time: 1 – 4 hours Route open: all year

Probably one of the shortest on this list of scenic drives Colorado, but it sure packs a punch! You’ll see some of the best scenery in Colorado from this short route.

Starting in Dillon, you’ll want to visit Lake Dillion. Full of recreation opportunities, it’s a great spot for biking, kayaking, hiking, boating and so much more.

For amazing views of the lake, hike the 0.6 mile Sapphire Point Overlook, one of my favorite things to do in Dillon .

On this Colorado scenic drive from Dillon to Leadville, your next stop is Frisco. It’s the most adorable downtown for shopping, dining, museums and live music. Be sure to try some local flavors at I Scream Gelato . It’s delicious!

After leaving Frisco, hop on I-70 until you get to Copper Mountain, Colorado. In the winter, it’s a snow-lover’s paradise. Skiing, snow boarding, snow tubing, ice skating and more – there’s so much to do here!

During the summer, Copper Mountain has scenic chair lift rides, golfing, mountain biking, a Rocky Mountain Coaster and more.

Next hop on Highway 91 south to Leadville. Along the way, there’s beautiful scenery and hiking without the crowds!

My favorite hike is the Mayflower Gulch Grand Traverse trail. This 6.1 mile hike is rated as moderate and it’s home to stunning views! Add snowshoes in wintertime for a winter wonderland hike.

Further down Highway 91 is Leadville. There’s so much to do in this picturesque Colorado town!

From hiking Mount Elbert (a 14er) to stand-up paddle boarding or going snowshoeing and snow tubing in the winter, the possibilities seem endless. Definitely check out Turquoise Lake on the west side of town for more scenic views!

7. Great Sand Dunes National Park to Mesa Verde National Park

wavy sand with green bushes and sand dunes in distance

Distance: 200 miles Estimated time: 8+ hours Route open: year round

One of the best scenic drives in Colorado and full of tons of things to do, you’ll love the route from the Great Sand Dunes National Park to Mesa Verde National Park.

Great Sand Dunes National Park is just located in southern Colorado, just north of Alamosa. Home to the largest sand dunes in North America, this park offers a dramatic change of scenery from the other spots on this list. It’s also a unique national park and is much fun to visit.

One of the top activities in the park is sliding down the sand dunes, just like snow. You can also hike anywhere on the dunes, as there are no official trails on the sand. It’s an open hike park, which reminds me of visiting Badlands National Park in South Dakota.

Pro tip: plan to be at the Great Sand Dunes National Park during a spring vacation in the Southwest , or early in the day in the summertime, because sand temperatures reach well over 100 degrees and it can be very uncomfortable.

Next, take the incredibly scenic drive along Highway 160 west towards Mesa Verde National Park. It’s about 4 hours straight through, but considering the activities at both parks, plan to spend at least 2 days on this drive.

Passing through the southern side of the San Juan National Forest is breathtaking! Enjoy the hot springs at Pagosa Springs, and see the Chimney Rock National Monument , which features ancient Ancestral Puebloan dwellings.

Further along Highway 160 is Durango, which is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat. The historic downtown district has boutique shops, museums, restaurants and so much more.

The final destination on this scenic route is Mesa Verde National Park. It’s home to well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings, which housed communities for over 700 years. Visiting Mesa Verde National Park is also one of the best things to do on a Colorado bucket list !

The park’s most predominant feature is Cliff Palace, which can be seen from a distance or with a ranger-led tour. Take the 6 mile drive to get there, and walk to Soda Canyon Overlook Trail to see the largest archeological site within the park.

Seeing the cliff dwellings up close provides a different experience, and helps put the size and detail into perspective. Tours are available for Cliff Palace, Long House, Balcony House and more. Make tour reservations in advance and be prepared for a lot of hiking!

Mount Evans Scenic Byway is an incredible view to some of the tallest peaks in North America. Being well above the tree line, the sights even look out-of-this world, with alpine lakes nestled between rocky cliffs.

As of the time of publication, you’ll need a timed ticket entry reservation to drive the road, to protect the fragile ecosystem from over tourism.

You’ll start in Idaho Springs and climb upwards for 28 miles until you reach the summit. On the way there, be sure to stop by Echo Lake and Summit Lake. Echo Lake is close to Idaho Springs and the trees and surrounding area are stunning. Summit Lake is above the tree line (at 13,000 feet) so the area looks a bit more harsh, but still beautiful in it’s own way.

After parking at the Mount Evans summit, there’s a short hike (0.25 miles) to reach the highest spot you can go – 14,271 feet in elevation.

Note: altitude sickness is a real deal here, so be sure to hydrate really well before you go (up to 48 hours in advance) and bring headache medicine with you. It’s strongly recommended to get used to the altitude in Denver or the surrounding area for a few days before doing the Mount Evans Scenic Byway adventure.

If you’re feeling lightheaded or dizzy, there’s nothing wrong with turning back around. Be safe while driving!

Pro tip: the weather can change in an instant on the mountain. Rain clouds typically come in the afternoon during summertime, so try to avoid them by going early.

And wear lots of layers as it’s cold at the top! During one trip in August, we were caught in a random lightning snowstorm and had to take shelter at the summit. It really is crazy weather that high up!

9. Peak to Peak Highway (a favorite on this list of Colorado scenic byways)

road with creek and yellow trees in sunlight

Distance: 55 miles Estimated time: 2 – 4 hours Route open: year-round

Peak to Peak was actually the first scenic byway in Colorado! It’s gorgeous anytime of year, but especially beautiful in the fall with the changing Aspen trees.

There’s so many things to see and do along Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. You could take this as a day trip from Denver, or spend some more time and visit nearby attractions, adorable small towns and the natural landscapes along the way.

To drive the Peak to Peak Highway, you’ll want to take Highway 7 south from Estes Park to Allenspark. From there, take Highway 72 to Nederland, CO. Then take Highway 119 and end at I-70 after Black Hawk. What a beautiful drive!

Allenspark is a cute little town at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s a resort town these days with art galleries, cafes and concerts, but was once the site of the international ski jumping competition – so cool!

Between Allenspark and Nederland is the Brainard Lake Recreation Area off Highway 112. It’s an awesome spot for canoeing, kayaking and fishing, if have time to spend an afternoon there.

A little further on Highway 112, stop in Indian Peak Wilderness Area. It’s situated on the Continental Divide and has over 50 lakes and 133 miles of hiking.

If you’re looking for an easy trail, try the Rainbow Lakes Trail at just 2.6 miles. A bit more challenging at 5.5 miles is the Lake Isabelle via Pawnee Pass Trail , offering stunning views!

In Nederland, be sure to visit the town’s main attraction, the Carousel of Happiness . If you’re traveling with kids or are young at heart, this amazing story of hand-carved animals helped to revive this town’s tourism. There’s also shopping and dining in Nederland, which could be perfect depending on the time you make it through town.

Black Hawk is the official end of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. This once mining town has been converted to a popular casino destination. So whether you’re planning to try your luck at gambling or need something to eat, Black Hawk is a great stop along this scenic drive in Colorado.

Peak to Peak Highway is one of the best Colorado scenic byways, and one that’s perfect for a day trip or combine it with a larger Colorado road trip .

10. Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway

best drives in colorado view of lake with bridge and small mountains in distance

Distance: 40 miles Estimated time: 2 – 4 hours Route open: year-round

One of the best scenic drives near Denver, the Lariat Loop is a National Scenic Byway that’s just bite-sized for an afternoon adventure! It’s the most ‘urban’ of the scenic byways in Colorado, but still offers plenty of nature opportunities.

You can start in Golden or Denver, but for the purposes of this post I’m recommending to start in Denver.

Take I-70 west out of Denver until you get to Highway 74 / Evergreen Pkwy. Once you hit Evergreen you’ll take Bear Creek Rd / Highway 74 which loops back up and connects back up to Highway 470 until you connect your loop in West Pleasant View, CO at I-70.

Your first stop is at Dinosaur Ridge . It’s one of the top tourist attractions for paleontologists and dinosaur lovers across the US. See and touch real fossils on one of the tours. Check out the entire property, and with over 250 dinosaur footprints, it’s a fun spot to explore.

As you drive south, the next major attraction on this scenic drive near Denver is Evergreen. Home to Evergreen Lake, it’s the perfect spot for kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding in the summer, or ice skating in the winter! Or, if you just want to stretch your legs after the drive, take the walking path around the lake.

While in Evergreen, be sure to stop by the Shadow Mountain Gallery , which has all kinds of artwork on display and then head to the Lariat Lodge Brewing Company for lunch or dinner.

As you loop back up north to Denver, you’ll pass Morrison, Colorado where the world’s only naturally acoustic amphitheater, Red Rocks Park and Ampitheatre is located. It’s one of the premier music venues in all of the US! Check the show schedule or stop by for a view of the cool theatre with the Rocky Mountain background.

Scenic drives Colorado Springs

These next 2 scenic routes in Colorado are leaving from Colorado Springs. There’s so much to do and see in the area.

Here’s a map of the scenic drives from Colorado Springs. Pinch or zoom to see more details.

11. Pikes Peak Highway

looking down mountain at curvy road with snow

Distance: 38 miles round trip Estimated time: 3 -4 hours Route open: year round

Looking for one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Colorado of all time? If so then try out the Pike’s Peak Highway near Colorado Springs.

In fact, this gorgeous drive is just 26-minutes from Colorado Springs and you can easily use US-24 West to access the entrance.

It will enable you to enjoy sweeping views from atop a 14,000-foot mountain and all without breaking a sweat on one of the most strenuous  Colorado Springs hikes  of them all.

Prepare for 156 turns as you ascend 6,715 feet to the top of this immortal Colorado 14er – which comes complete with its very own cog railway too.

Just don’t forget to explore Santa’s Village at the start and then inhale a donut at the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center once you make it to the summit.

Pro tip: be sure to check the weather before starting out. Because while this road is open all year long, it may close if driving conditions prove to be unsafe. Therefore, you’ll never have to worry about whether or not this road is safe to drive.

Visiting Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs is one of the best places to visit in August , making late summer a great time of year to visit. However, it’s never 100%!

Note: You’ll also need to pay $10 per adult and $5 per child to use this road, so be prepared. Additionally, guests are asked to limit their time at the top to just 30-minutes so that everyone can enjoy the stunning views.

Parking since it’s quite limited at the top so you may want to start early, to avoid the crowds so that you can grab yourself a spot at the top. Check Pikes Peak hours before you go.

Lastly, be sure to have plenty of gas in your car since there is no place to buy it once you get on the road. You’ll also want to downshift on the way down so that you don’t ruin your breaks.

12. Colorado Springs to Royal Gorge Bridge

best drives in colorado view of suspension bridge over gorge with mountains in distance

Distance: 116 miles Estimated time: 3 – 4 hours Route open: year round

It’s one of the most unique things to do in Colorado – visit the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. It’s actually America’s highest suspension bridge, sitting 956 feet above the Arkansas River.

On this list of the best scenic drives Colorado, this is just an hour each way to and from Colorado Springs. You’l take Highway 115 south from Colorado Springs until you get to Penrose. From there, head west on Highway 50, about 9 miles past Canon City.

On the way from Colorado Springs to the Royal Gorge Bridge, be sure to stop at Cheyenne Mountain State Park for some great views and hiking.

If you’re looking for a light walk, try the Zook Loop , at just 1.1 miles. For more of a challenge, hike Cougar’s Shadow and Blackmer Loop , which is considered moderate hike at 3.6 miles.

Back on the road, head to Canon City. Originally settled during Pikes Peak Gold Rush during the 1860’s, the town is now an adorable downtown scene.

Walk around for shopping and dining. Or if there’s a dinosaur lover in your group, check out the nearby Garden Park Fossil Area .

But of course the main attraction on this scenic drive near Colorado Springs is the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. You’ll need to buy tickets to see the bridge, but it’s worth it to cross the large suspension bridge or ride the gondola.

The park also offers ziplining, a sky coaster and rock climbing! And if you’re looking for unique views of the canyon, try your turn at white water rafting. I actually did the rafting during one of my first Colorado road trips and fell in love with the state.

Colorado funeral home owners accused of storing 190 decaying bodies are charged with Covid fraud

DENVER — A couple who owned a Colorado funeral home where authorities last year discovered 190 decaying bodies were indicted on federal charges that they misspent nearly $900,000 in pandemic relief funds on vacations, cosmetic surgery, jewelry and other personal expenses, according to court documents unsealed Monday.

The indictment reaffirms accusations from state prosecutors that Jon and Carie Hallford gave families dry concrete instead of cremated ashes and alleges the couple buried the wrong body on two occasions.

The couple also collected more than $130,000 from families for cremations and burial services they never provided, the indictment said.

A sign covers the broken back window of the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, Colo. on Oct. 16, 2023.

The 15 charges brought by the federal grand jury are in addition to more than 200 criminal counts already pending against the Hallfords in Colorado state court for corpse abuse, money laundering, theft and forgery.

The federal offenses carry potential penalties of 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines, the indictment said.

On Monday, the owners of the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Colorado Springs entered a federal courtroom bound in shackles as they made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Scott Varholak.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Neff argued the couple were a flight risk, after they allegedly fled to Oklahoma last October when the decaying bodies were first discovered and before their arrest on state charges on Nov. 8.

“They simply evaporated from the community,” Neff said.

The judge did not immediately decide if the couple should be released pending trial. He set an arraignment hearing for Thursday.

Carie Hallford’s attorney, Chaz Melihercik, said he would argue against detention at the next hearing. Jon Hallford’s public defender, Kilie Latendresse, told the judge that he had been following his bond conditions in the state case and that detention was unnecessary.

The new charges and accusations triggered more anguish for families who sent their loved ones to the funeral home.

Every new revelation about the case is a jolt to Tanya Wilson, who hired Return to Nature to cremate her mother’s remains. Wilson spread the ashes with family in Hawaii. After the grim discovery, Wilson was told those ashes weren’t actually her mother, whose body has since been identified among the 190 decaying bodies.

Hundreds of family members, like Wilson, had thought they put their loved one’s to rest, or clutched their ashes close, only to have that healing torn away.

“I honestly feel like I have whiplash, and I can’t hold onto one emotion long enough to be able to process it,” Wilson said over the phone.

Before the new indictment was unsealed, public records showed the Hallfords had been plagued by debt — facing evictions and lawsuits for unpaid cremations even as they spent lavishly on themselves.

The indictment alleges the couple used $882,300 in pandemic relief funds to buy items that also included a vehicle, dinners, tuition for their child and cryptocurrency. The fraud involved three loans obtained between March 2020 and October 2021, authorities said.

Previously released court documents from the state abuse of corpse case reveal more details about what they were spending money on.

They bought a GMC Yukon and an Infiniti that together were worth over $120,000 — enough to cover cremation costs twice over for all of the bodies found in their business’ facility last October, according to previous court testimony from FBI Agent Andrew Cohen.

“That is just thoroughly disgusting for a lack of a better term, just reading about all the money that they had,” said Wilson. “Just the price of the two vehicles that he bought ... it was enough to just do right by these families.”

The Hallfords also paid for trips to California, Florida and Las Vegas, as well as $31,000 in cryptocurrency, laser body sculpting and shopping at luxury retailers like Gucci and Tiffany & Co., according to court documents.

The couple have not yet entered pleas to the state’s abuse of corpse charges.

The Hallfords left in their wake a trail of unpaid bills, disgruntled landlords and unsettled business disputes.

The couple once claimed to a former landlord that they would settle their rent when they were paid for work they had done for the Federal Emergency Management Agency during the Covid-19 pandemic. The business’ website featured logos for FEMA and the Department of Defense.

FEMA has said they did not have any contracts with the funeral home. A defense department database search also showed no contracts with Return to Nature.

The company failed to pay more than $5,000 in 2022 property taxes at one of its locations, public records show. Then last year, the business was slapped with a $21,000 judgement for not paying for “a couple hundred cremations,” according to public records and attorney Lisa Epps with Wilbert Funeral Services crematory.

The Hallfords’ alleged lies, money laundering, forgery and manipulation over the past four years devastated hundreds of grieving family members.

The 190 bodies were discovered last year in a bug-infested storage building in the small town of Penrose, about two hours south of Denver. Some of the remains had languished since 2019.

An investigation by The Associated Press found that the Hallfords likely sent fake ashes and fabricated cremation records to families who did business with them. They appear to have written on death certificates given to families, along with ashes, that the cremations were performed by Wilbert Funeral Services, which denied performing them for the funeral home at that time.

As the decomposing bodies were identified, families learned that the ashes they’d received could not have been the remains of their loved ones. Court documents allege at least some were dry concrete.

As far back as 2020, there were concerns raised about the business’s improper storage of bodies. But there was no follow-up by regulators, letting the collection of bodies grow to nearly 200 over the following three years.

Colorado has some of weakest funeral home regulations in the country. Funeral home operators in the state don’t have to graduate high school, let alone study mortuary science or pass an exam.

The Hallfords case and others in recent years spurred Colorado lawmakers to introduce legislation to strengthen oversight with rules that are in line with or exceed those in other states. Those bills are currently moving through the state Legislature.

Kamala Harris blames Trump for abortion bans during Arizona visit

By Nidia Cavazos

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 8:26 PM EDT / CBS News

Vice President Kamala Harris is in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday to cast former President Donald Trump as the architect of the restrictive abortion bans emerging nationwide in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision striking down the federal right to an abortion.

Harris is making her second trip this year to the battleground state, days after the state Supreme Court upheld an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions .

"Here in Arizona, they have turned back the clock to the 1800s to take away a woman's most fundamental right, the right to make decisions about her own body," Harris said of the ruling.

She called Trump "the architect of this health care crisis."

"Because of Donald Trump, more than 20 states in our nation have bans," Harris said. "Now, because of Donald Trump, one in three women of reproductive age in our country live in a state that has a Trump abortion ban."

She warned that a second Trump term would bring more bans.

"We all know if Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban, and how do we know? Just look at his record," she said. "Just look at the facts. Y'all know I'm a former prosecutor."

Trump has not endorsed a national ban and earlier this week said the question should be left to the states . "Whatever they decide must be the law of the land," he said.

Friday's event is a campaign rally, which allowed Harris to openly attack Trump and Republicans more than she has during other battleground state visits where she has appeared as part of her official White House duties.

Since Tuesday's ruling, Arizona has been at the forefront of national abortion politics. Republicans and Democrats alike are keenly aware that the issue could be a determining factor in who wins Arizona this fall and, potentially, the presidency.

Arizona is likely to have a constitutional amendment on abortion rights on the ballot in November. Every ballot measure to protect abortion access since Roe was struck down has been successful, even in heavily Republican states.

After the Arizona ruling, Trump told reporters the state Supreme Court ruling went too far: "Yeah, they did, and I think it'll be straightened out."

Arizona also has a pivotal Senate race this fall to fill the seat that will be left open by independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's retirement. Republican hopeful Kari Lake now says she supports repealing the state's 1864 abortion ban, though two years ago she supported it . On Thursday, she released a video saying the state high court's ruling "is out of line with where people of this state are."

Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is also running for Sinema's seat, has accused Lake of lying and taking a more moderate stance for the sake of the November elections.

In 2020, President Biden won Arizona by a very narrow margin, receiving just 10,457 more votes than Trump. The Biden team has since placed a heavy emphasis on  abortion rights. In March, Harris also visited Phoenix as part of her "fight for Reproductive Freedoms" tour.

On Friday, Harris was accompanied by Gallego and other state officials and abortion rights advocates.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nick Jensen walked out of the arena with his family, avoiding a trip to the hospital after the Washington Capitals defenseman crashed headfirst into the boards and was stretchered off the ice Saturday.

That update from coach Spencer Carbery came after the team said Jensen was conscious, alert and moving his extremities following the shove from Tampa Bay’s Michael Eyssimont late in the first period.

“Scary situation,” Carbery said. “Initially when you see something like that, someone stretchered off, you’re thinking the worst-case situations. He’s doing better.”

Capitals players after their emotional 4-2 victory to keep their playoff hopes alive still had Jensen on their minds, especially college teammate and longtime friend Nic Dowd, who fought Eyssimont in the second.

“You’re immediately upset, but then when I see Jens laying on the ice like that, it’s tough to see,” Dowd said, his eyes welling with tears. “Our kids grow up together, born around the same time, know his family really well. Seeing anybody in a vulnerable state like that is challenging. But he’s a tough guy, so, I’m glad to know that he’s doing better now.”

After his head hit the boards, Jensen lay motionless on the ice while he was attended to by emergency medical personnel. Officials postponed the final 1:31 of the first period to be played after intermission.

There was no penalty called on the play, referee Frederick L’Ecuyer said, leading to boos from the crowd.

“He’s awesome,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, who won a USHL championship with Jensen in 2010 with Green Bay and went over to the home locker room to check in about him. “Those are tough ones to see, especially because of the result of the hit and it wasn’t penalized, nor should it have been. It was just a tough one all the way around. I’m hoping he’s OK. I heard he’s doing OK.”

Jensen’s absence is the latest injury to Washington’s blue line, already missing Rasmus Sandin, whose head hit a stanchion Sunday against Ottawa and who has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season. The other five defensemen shouldered the load the rest of the way in the Lightning game.

“They really stepped up,” said goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who added that he and his teammates determined to play like Jensen after the injury.

“That’s hard and it’s the right way and I thought we did that. Credit to the guys in here because it’s not easy seeing a brother go down like that.”

Man shocked by $143,000 phone bill from overseas trip

A Florida man got the shock of his life by looking at his cellphone bill after a trip to Europe.

(Gray News) - When it comes to your phone plan, it helps to read the fine print. A Florida man learned that the hard way after he incurred a fortune in roaming charges during a trip to Europe.

Rene Remund told WFTS he was charged $143,269 for using 9.5 gigabytes of roaming data during a three-week trip to Switzerland.

He said he’s been a T-Mobile customer for more than 30 years and said he had been assured beforehand at a T-Mobile store that he would be “covered” while overseas.

At first, Remund said his eyes deceived him, as he thought the bill was for $143.

He said he got in touch with a representative, who assured him the bill was correct. At that point, he turned to legal help.

T-Mobile ended up crediting him for the account.

The Federal Communications Commission encourages people to know the details of their cellular plan coverage before they go on international trips, including whether your mobile phone will work there, what the roaming rates are and how to track your usage.

T-Mobile similarly encouraged its customers to check the details of their plans before setting out, as some older plans don’t include international roaming.

“If you’re not on a Go5G, Magenta, ONE Plan, Essentials, or a Simple Choice plan and you’ll be traveling outside the U.S., you can add World Class International Roaming to each line,” T-Mobile said on its webpage devoted to explaining its international roaming services . Customers can do this by managing their plan .

Other options include blocking international data and having a prepaid plan while overseas.
