Imagine traveling from Southwest Florida to Key West in less than four hours. Impossible? Not if you board the Key West Express at either Fort Myers Beach or Marco Island. While the high-speed ferry skims the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, you relax and enjoy the sunshine and scenery. This gives new meaning to the old saying, "getting there is half the fun!"

About the Key West Express

Getting to Key West used to be limited to either driving down the traffic-prone  Overseas Highway  or flying into Key West International Airport, which is not usually practical for those on a budget. Although the drive from Miami can usually be done in less than four hours, those traveling from Southwest Florida may find that the trip takes them all day.

But taking the Key West Express is as easy as parking your car and boarding the large catamaran. You may choose from traveling in air-conditioned comfort inside or soak up the sunshine on the outside deck. A completely stocked galley and bar are available as are large flat-screened TVs with satellite television.

The Key West Express isn't just a day trip. When making your reservations, you can plan to stay over in Key West and come back a different day—simply reserve your return date. When boarding, each passenger is allowed two small carry-on bags or pay an additional fee per piece for larger luggage. Coolers, alcohol, and glass items are not allowed on board the boat.

Booking Your Trip

Key West Express recommends booking your trip at least eight days in advance. This is not only to ensure you actually get a ticket, but also to make sure there is a boat from your desired location on the date you want. The Key West Express departs from Fort Myers Beach all year round and Marco Island, seasonally.

Be sure to bring your confirmation code and photo ID to the ticket window on the day of your departure.

Terminal Locations and Parking Information

The Key West Express departs daily from Fort Myers Beach (except when the calendar indicates no sailing) at 8:30 a.m. with ticketing and boarding beginning at 7 a.m. The terminal is located at 1200 Main St, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. The return trip from Key West to Fort Myers Beach departs daily at 6 p.m. with boarding beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Uncovered, paid parking is available at the Fort Myers Beach location. Travel time to Key West is about 3.5 hours.

The Key West Express departs from Marco Island seasonally from December through April (except as noted on calendar) at 8:00 a.m. with ticketing and boarding beginning at 7 a.m. During the summer the Ferry leaves from Marco Island on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the same times. The terminal is located at 951 Bald Eagle Drive, Marco Island, FL 34145.

The return trip from Key West to Marco Island departs daily at 5 p.m. with boarding beginning at 4 p.m. Uncovered parking is available at the Marco Island location free of charge. Travel time to Key West is about 3 hours.

The Key West terminal is located at 100 Grinnell Street, Key West, FL 33040. The company reserves the right to deny boarding to passengers who aren't aboard at least 30 minutes before departure, so be on time!

What to Expect on Board

The Key West Express strives to create a comfortable environment for all its passengers and offers air-conditioned interiors, sun deck loungers, flat screen TVs, and a full-service bar with burgers and sandwiches, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The company prides themselves on their airline-style reclining seats as well, so expect comfort.

Arrangements can be made to take along your bicycle as well, but space is limited so notify the boat ahead of time. Additionally, the crew can accommodate disabled passengers and their wheelchairs or ECVs.

The Key West Express even has space for household pets as well. But reservations must be made ahead of time. Pets also must be kept in carriers or crates for the duration of the trip.

What to Expect When You Get to Key West

The Key West Express docks at the Flagler Terminal, which is only about a 10-minute walk from Duval Street. Transportation is also available should you need to catch a taxi to get to your hotel.

boat tours to key west from fort myers

Day Trip vs Overnight:

I highly recommend an overnight stay in Key West, as there is so much to do and a day trip will only give you 4-5 hours to explore – hardly enough for Key West as you don’t even get to experience one night in town. There is no additional charge for either parking or the ticket price to return on another day, although their website doesn’t really advertise that you can return on another day.

Important Security Information:

When leaving Fort Myers Beach, the Key West Express leaves from a private dock, and is not required to screen passengers in the same manner as when they leave from Key West, a government operated port facility. As such, you and your luggage for the return portion of your trip will be inspected in a similar manner as at the airport . With this in mind, make sure you don’t bring firearms, knives and other similar items which may be subject to confiscation.

Ferry Schedule:

The Key West Express ferry boat to Key West leaves Fort Myers Beach on a daily basis during peak season, and Wednesdays through Sundays during the summer months.

  • Departure from Fort Myers Beach is 8:30 am, ticketing begins at 7 am.
  • Departure from Key West is 5 pm, ticketing begins at 5 pm.
  • Travel time from Fort Myers Beach to Key West is about 3 1/2 hours once underway.

Buying Tickets:

Fares listed below are published fares, and calling them directly at 888-539-2628 usually results in a discount being offered unless they are completely full. There are occasionally special deals, and sometimes the hotel concierge can get you a discount also. You can also purchase online .

Round Trip Tickets:

  • Adults – $146
  • Seniors – $136
  • Juniors (aka Children) – $81

One Way Tickets:

  • Adults – $86
  • Seniors – $86
  • Juniors (aka Children) – $58

Pet Policy:

Pets are accepted on the Key West Express for $15 each way on a space-available basis. You will need to provide your own crate or carrier, and make a reservation in advance.

Food & Drink Onboard:

While food is available onboard, it’s definitely nothing to tell your friends about. My breakfast sandwich was a Jimmy Dean sausage sandwich that I didn’t want and was nearly impossible to give away, even to college kids. I strongly suggest brining your own food, or eating prior to boarding.

The bar selection was good, and since we weren’t eating breakfast we did order a few bloody mary’s to keep us nourished. I want to say I remember prices being around $6 per drink.

Additional Nice-To-Know Information:

  • Parking is available, free of charge at the dock in Fort Myers Beach. When you arrive, a parking attendant will ask you which day you are returning so you can be parked in the appropriate area.
  • Luggage is limited to 2 carry on items, approximately the same size as a carry on you can use on airlines. However, there are no official measurements so some flexibility is allowed. Strollers, wheel chairs, and other such items are also accepted. Oversize luggage is charged $10 per piece.
  • The fleet consists of 4 ships, and the newest, namesake ship called the Key West Express is (not surprisingly) the nicest.
  • Onboard Amenities (based on Key West Express ship) include a well equipped bar, small cafeteria style galley, restrooms and limited seating with tables.
  • If you get motion sickness (or have never been on a ship) you would be smart to bring some Dramamine (available from the local grocery’s pharmacy section) and/or ginger pills or candies to combat motion sickness. Ginger is an effective natural remedy, just be sure any candies you do buy actually contain ginger and not just flavoring if you choose this route.

Boat trip from Ft. Meyers to Key west.

My wife and I enjoyed the trip to and from. Very nice boat, left at 8 am Monday and left Keys at 6 Pm. You can go and come the same day if you want a quick trip to Key west. We went my Monday to Thursday. It was a nice change up from driving all the way. If you stay ask hotel if they have shuttle service.

boat tours to key west from fort myers

It is a pleasure to know you enjoyed your experience. Good idea to inquire about shuttle service from your hotel, resort or B&B as several do offer services. The Duval Loop, which is a free bus with numerous convenient stops around the island is a great option for many. We thank you for sharing, and for choosing to sail with us!

It's the quicker option to travel to Key West. The land route would take at least 1.5 hours longer. You can purchase your tickets online before or get them there. You have to be ar the ferry at least 45 min before it leaves. The journey from Fort Myers to the Keys will take approximately 3.5 hours. The boat is sufficiently equipped, restrooms, TV, bar, food, upper decks . No wifi on board! Staff is friendly. You won't need a car in Key West, as it is very walkable, you can also rent bikes, scooters or buggies if you must.

Brooke we thank you for being our guest and for taking the time to review your experience. It is a pleasure for staff and crew to be surrounded by happy excited travelers and share helpful hints and information on island attractions, history and favorite Key West spots. We hope that we'll be honored by your return for another fun getaway!

5 Stars! Key West Express is definitely the way to go! I took the Key West Express from FM Beach to Key West for the first time this past weekend....I was so happy to choose this route instead of driving! It was an easy way to go....I did not have to worry about traffic or delays....It was pleasant! All of the staff was very friendly...No stress....I had never taken this Ship and it was very enjoyable! I will definitely do again and Do Recommend it! If you would like a nice little getaway to Key West....Try this! I recommend staying a minimum of 2-3 days and returning a later day. Not sure how people go in am and return in evening Does not seem doable to me! Try Key West Express and you will not be sorry!!

Mary your recommendation means a lot to us. We value our guests and want a positive experience for all. Your compliments of our staff and crew will be shared as it is very rewarding to be acknowledged and appreciated. Dat trips can be a nice way to get a taste of the island, but ideal to spend a night or more to fully enjoy the destination. Thank you for sharing!!

Very smooth & efficient ride from Fort Myers Beach to Key West. Boat was clean, food service was okay--not many options, but tasty. The ride back was bumpy with rougher waters. A number of people got sick, but the crew was very quick to clean. I am shocked that I did not get sick, since I suffer from motion sickness. My key on this trip? I downloaded movie videos on my phone (and completely concentrated on them instead of anything going on around me), sat in the middle of the boat, made sure my stomach wasn't too full or too empty, and chewed on caramelized (sugared) ginger throughout the ride. It worked wonders for me! I would definitely take the Key West Express again!

Thank you for sharing a great idea for those with motion sensitivity! Most of the time the ride is nice and smooth however we are known for summer time late afternoon thunderstorms here in Southwest Florida. We are delighted you enjoyed your experience and appreciate you kind remarks in regard to our vessel and crew!!

This was our first trip on the Key West Express. Hopefully not our last. We purchased the tickets during a holiday special. $99 roundtrip good for two years. Will be looking for that special again. Some tips: Print your tickets in advance (also parking pass for Ft Myers) this will save time at the gate. Boarding lines start early. If you want to sit outside take a towel or something to wipe off the seat. We sat out on the way down. Windy but plenty warm. The rest rooms were clean and the snack bar has many choices. You can bring your own snacks and drinks but no cooler. On the way back we sat inside. I was worried if it would get chilly after the sun set. By the way the sunset on the trip back was spectacular. We shared a table with another couple and talked about the whole way. The staff and set up was very well organized. People on hand to help with parking and direct you. An easy way to travel. There are TVs in the cabin to pass the time.

Wonderful! We as so glad you got to enjoy an amazing sunset. They can be positively breathtaking over the gulf! Lots of guests enjoy the sunny and exhilaratingly windy top deck on the way to Key West. Just remember the sunscreen! Thank you for kindly sharing. We look forward to your return!

Took my wife and two kids to Key West for four days and rode the KWE. Every employee we ran into which includes the parking lot attendants, the lady working the gift shop and every member of the crew were great. There are plenty of bathrooms and the snack bar is reasonably priced. The ride is a bit long, but it’s better than driving, so make sure you bring stuff that keeps you busy.

Todd we are glad you chose to sail with us! Lot's of people bring cards or games, or enjoy the movies we play on the first and second decks. Thank you for sharing your feedback and being our guests!

Key West Ferry Details

Key West Express operates a couple different high-speed catamarans out of Fort Myers Beach and one from Marco Island. We took the Big Cat out of Fort Myers Beach.

An early morning departure, you’ll arrive in Key West in time for lunch. You can return the same day, or stay a few days to really soak up the Key West ambiance. The Ferry usually heads back around 6:00pm, arriving at the Fort Myers Beach marina at around 9:30pm.

The current fare for a round-trip is $172 per person, with reduced fares offered for children and seniors. If you book at least 8 days in advance, you will receive a substantial discount  but the fare will be non-refundable (if you, or Key West Express, needs to cancel the trip, you’ll receive a credit for a future trip). Call or check the website for discount details.

Soft drinks, muffins, breakfast sandwiches, soft pretzels, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and other snacks are from the galley on a cash-basis only.

Beer wine and mixed drinks are also available at the bar and again this is cash only. If you prefer, you may bring your own breakfast/dinner on board with you.

On Board the Key West Ferry

The ride on the Big Cat catamaran is very smooth and the interior is very comfortable. Inside seating is set up primarily with seats on either side of a table.

This is especially nice if you’re traveling with a group and want to play cards or just socialize. The upper deck, with outside seating, has rows of seats (no tables).

You probably won’t spend much time up on top as it’s very windy and can be chilly once the catamaran gets moving.

During the 3-1/2 hour excursion, you’ll see passengers sleeping, playing cards, reading, watching one of the several plasma TV’s, eating and drinking

The Key West Express staff is very friendly and helpful. Before arriving at Key West the staff will stroll through the cabin to presell tickets on the Conch Tour Train.

Conch Tour Train

The Conch Tour Train is very popular, but I prefer the Old Town Trolley, which costs about the same and includes “on/off” privileges. It’s very helpful for first time visitors to learn the layout of Key West and identify places of interests for a future visit.

And if you’re only visiting for the day, you’ll get a decent overview of the Key West lifestyle in a short period of time.

At Key West

If you visit Key West for just one day, you will have time to take a trolley tour, have lunch, do a little shopping on Duval Street, and possibly visit an attraction or two. Unfortunately, you will miss the sunset celebration that occurs daily at Mallory Square.

If you visit Key West for a few days, you will be able to better appreciate the Key West lifestyle, see a variety of attractions, sample several different restaurants and night spots, and perhaps go snorkeling, fishing or take a sightseeing boat tour.

A Couple of Tips

Arrive at the marina early for boarding. The best seats, along the windows will be taken first. Whatever you do, don’t place your claim on a spot upstairs on the open deck.

Once the boat gets moving then you won’t want to stay there. We recommend that you find your permanent seats inside you can always go outside as you please. The same holds true for your return trip.

As you check in at the Key West Ferry Terminal then you will be assigned a boarding letter (A, B, C, etc.). You will board in the order called.

You may want to take a sweater or jacket especially if you tend to chill easily. The inside seating areas are air conditioned and it can get a bit chilly.

Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .
