Intrepid former marketer and chief becomes Tourism Tasmania CEO

Sarah Clark takes up the CEO reins from early 2023

CMO staff

CMO to CEO: How Intrepid Travel’s Sarah Clark is balancing sustainability, diversity and personality in the pursuit of growth Intrepid Travel A/NZ managing director and former marketing chief, Sarah Clark, has become the new CEO of Tourism Tasmania. A Tasmanian by birth, Clark has been on the tourism body’s board since September 2021.

She takes over the CEO post after several years with Intrepid, firstly as its marketing chief before being promoted to managing director of A/NZ in 2019. Clark then took a one-year secondment to oversee the travel group’s burgeoning accommodation strategy. She returned to the last chief post in early 2022.

Having spent her entire career in travel and tourism, Clark has held other management roles including VP for STA Travel in Dallas.

In a statement, Tourism Tasmania said Clark brings significant skills and global experience to the role, having been a leader in the tourism industry specialising in travel and marketing across multiple continents. The body also noted Clark is taking over the helm of Tourism Tasmania as the state’s tourism industry is entering an exciting new period with the development of the 2030 Visitor Economy Strategy well underway.

“Sarah’s deep understanding of sustainable travel from an industry operator and customer perspective will serve her well as we continue to deliver our plan for Tasmania’s tourism sector and maintain the positive impacts it contributes to our state,” Tasmania premier and minister for tourism, Jeremy Rockliff, said.

Clark replaces John Fitzgerald, who had been at the helm of Tourism Tasmania for the past 10 years. Her appointment followed an extensive national recruitment process that Rockliff said attracted a very strong field of candidates.

“I would also like to thank John Fitzgerald for his contribution and leadership over the last 10 years. During his tenure, he has overseen both a period of significant industry growth as well as the unprecedented challenge and impact of COVID-19,” Rockliff said.

For her part, Clark said she was honoured to take on the role as a proud Tasmanian and help realise Tasmania’s vision and plan of being a global leader in sustainable tourism.

“We are a destination on the top of many Australians’ travel lists, with international travellers quickly catching on. People are looking for enriching and meaningful travel experiences and Tasmania is unlike anywhere in the world,” she commented. “We are beautifully positioned to thrive as travel recovers with our world class gastronomy, natural environment, arts, and unique culture.

“I look forward to leading the incredible and very capable team at Tourism Tasmania and working with the wider tourism industry to drive positive social, cultural and economic impact to Tasmanians through a strong and sustainable visitor economy.”

Clark officially commences as Tourism Tasmania’s CEO in early 2023.

Australia's Top Travel Destinations - Insights from Tourism Tasmania's CEO Sarah Clark Travel Trends with Dan Christian

Australia's travel scene is as diverse as the continent itself, ranging from the sun-soaked beaches of Queensland to the rugged wilderness of Tasmania. In this episode, we are privileged to sit down with Sarah Clark, the dynamic CEO of Tourism Tasmania. Having climbed the ranks from a passionate tour guide to a global travel executive with Top Deck and Intrepid and now leading a large Tourism organization, Sarah brings a refreshing perspective on the travel industry's evolution Down Under. What You'll Learn: Unveiling Australian Travel Trends with Sarah Clark Sarah's career trajectory has been as diverse and adventurous as the landscapes she now promotes. Her stories, infused with personal growth and industry expertise, chronicle the very essence of Australian travel. The Secluded Charm of the Australian Landscape Our conversation begins with a discussion on what sets Australia apart on the global stage. Sarah emphasizes how Australia's remote allure is a double-edged sword, as isolation breeds both exclusivity and logistical challenges. However, to her, this is where Australia shines, "Its secluded spots create unparalleled experiences that travelers increasingly seek in a bustling world," she shares. Emerging Travel Behaviors With the tourism industry recovering post-pandemic, Sarah points out new travel behaviors amongst visitors. "There's a surge in the quest for authentic experiences," she notes. Travelers are shying away from the conventional and leaning towards immersive adventures that champion local culture, sustainability, and personal enrichment. The Market Size Diversity in Australia Compared to Other Nations Discussing market size and demand, Sarah draws attention to the contrasts between Australia and other travel hubs. "When we look at places like Europe or Asia, with their density and proximity, the sheer volume of tourists differs greatly from Australia's figures," she explains. This disparity shapes marketing strategies and service offers, which must cater to a smaller yet more specialized market. "However, this gives us the incredible opportunity to specialize, to curate bespoke journeys that larger markets may struggle to deliver with the same intimacy." Looking Ahead in Australian Tourism To conclude, Sarah presents an optimistic eye towards the future, envisioning an industry that continues to evolve and prioritize the planet and its people. She believes that the travel sector holds the key to global understanding and empathy, and is enthusiastic about Australia's role in this grand narrative. "We're poised at the edge of a new era," she asserts. "An era where travel is not just about 'seeing', but about 'experiencing', 'participating', and 'preserving'. As the first Australian-born woman to ever become a Queen, Tasmania’s own princess-turned-queen Mary has made the “news” in her now native Denmark, appearing in a hilarious Tassie tourism ad in a local newspaper.

Sarah Clark, CEO of Tourism Tasmania, shared the glorious ad on her LinkedIn profile earlier this week.

The full-page ad, appearing in Danish newspaper Politiken, read: “Down here our views are fit for a Queen. Just ask yours.”

Following Mary’s rise from Princess to Queen of Denmark after the abdication of Margrethe II, the tourism body attempted to harness the royal’s surging adoration and reverence amongst the Danish public to get bang for their buck (or Danish Krone).

Aussie Mary the focus of global attention as new Queen.

The tongue-in-cheek ad is part of a much larger tourism campaign, Come Down For Air, promoting the Apple Isle both domestically and abroad.

Clark told Hobart’s Pulse of her team’s mission ahead of launching the campaign, revealing the “Mary” angle was about “having a bit of fun using our Tasmanian tone of voice and stunning imagery”.

Another full-page ad appeared in Melbourne’s The Age newspaper earlier this week which followed the same Tassie blueprint.

“Becoming Queen. The only decent excuse for leaving”, it read.

Around 150,000 people reportedly gathered in Copenhagen to watch the official proclamation of Queen Mary and King Frederik X.

Queen Mary was born in Hobart, and was living in Sydney in 2000 when she met the then Prince Frederik during the Olympics.

Hollywood actor loses his mind as Caitlin Clark explodes in ‘epic’ revenge game

The basketball world was left in awe by a college player’s recordbreaking game that even had a Hollywood star losing his mind.

Remember the name Caitlin Clark.

The 22-year-old, who has already rewritten the college basketball record books, took another step to greatness on Tuesday AEDT with a blistering performance to lead Iowa to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

In a blockbuster rematch of last year’s NCAA championship game, the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the LSU Tigers 94-87 in a thrilling Elite Eight match-up in Albany, New York.

Clark scored nearly half her team’s tally, finishing with 41 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.

She made nine three-pointers and every one of them was crucial as scores were tied 45-45 at halftime.

Clark nailed dagger after dagger, prompting a hilarious reaction from LSU’s Hailey Van Lith, who could only shrug her shoulders when Clark drained a three-pointer after being defended closely.

It was a revenge game for Clark, who took bragging rights over Angel Reese after the LSU centre pointed at her ring finger and taunted Clark with the John Cena ‘You can’t see me’ gesture after winning last year’s title.

Actor and Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis couldn’t get enough of the action, mimicking Reese’s taunt in the stands as Clark went berserk on court.

Reese brushed aside talk of the rivalry pre-game, saying she and Clark don’t hate each other. But the loss means LSU are eliminated and Reese and coach Kim Mulkey’s dream of going back-to-back is over.

Iowa will face either Southern California or Connecticut for a spot in the championship game, while South Carolina and North Carolina State will battle it out in the other Final Four match-up.

A NCAA championship is the one title Clark hasn’t won. Earlier this season she became the highest scoring player, male or female, in NCAA Division 1 basketball history.

In the victory over LSU, she also broke the previous record for the most three-pointers in Division 1 history (537).

“This one feels a little bit better,” Clark said after the win.

“It’s my senior year with this group, and a lot of people counted us out at the beginning of the year.

“And all we did was work really hard … But the job’s not finished.”

Clark rattled in four of her three-pointers in the third quarter to help take the game away from LSU and stay on track for a fairytale ending to her collegiate career.

“I think just confidence, being confident in all the work that I put in, trusting my teammates,” Clark said of her third quarter scoring spree.

“We knew it was going to be physical but we weathered every storm. But you’ve got to give them a lot of credit they had a great year.”

Basketball fans and commentators were simply in awe of Clark’s shooting ability as she dragged Iowa over the line.

ESPN’s commentator Ryan Ruocco exclaimed at fulltime: “Galactic greatness from Caitlin Clark on display yet again!”

NBA commentator Molly Morrison wrote on X: “Never thought i’d see someone else with the same shooting abilities as steph but caitlin clark is HER.”

Shea Serrano posted: “Caitlin clark hitting a goofy 28-footer fading left over van lith after van lith missed a wide open 3 is very much a f*** you from caitlin lol what a monster.”

Women’s hoops host LaChina Robinson said: “This game came down to Caitlin Clark. Period. Game over.”

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde said: “Watching Clark shoot is just a thrill. Epic performance.”

Neroli Meadows added: “Atmosphere in the NCAA Elite 8 sounds unreal. Clark v Reese… love to see it.”

Clark is regarded as one of the greatest players — male or female — in the history of college basketball, an iconic, generational talent who this season overtook 1960s star Pete Maravich as the all-time leading scorer in collegiate hoops.

Her lethal shooting from beyond the arc has drawn comparisons to WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu and NBA three-point scoring leader Steph Curry — who faced off in a three-point contest at the NBA All-Star weekend in January.

Clark is set to be taken with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever.

Her career has sparked a commercial bonanza for college basketball, attracting sellout crowds and drawing huge television audiences.

Her impact — dubbed the “Caitlin Clark Effect” has been compared to singer Taylor Swift and has even seen her followers dubbed “Clarkies”, mirroring Swift’s fervent fanbase of “Swifties”.
