Bhutan remains one of our all time favourite countries that we have ever visited.

While Paro is the more visited of the two main cities due to both the airport and Paro Taktsang (the Tiger’s Nest) being located there, we preferred Thimphu. We want you to love Thimphu as much as we do, so we are sharing all the best places to visit in Thimphu to make it an unforgettable experience. 

We were blown away by how many different kinds of Thimphu tourist places were available. Whether you’re interested in the history of Tashichho Dzong, want to marvel at the majesty of Buddha Point, geek out over stamps at the Bhutan Postal Museum, shop for souvenirs at Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory, hike Tango Monastery or just eat ALL THE FOOD, Thimphu has it all. It even has our top recommended place to visit in Bhutan!

There really is something here for any kind of traveller: culture, food, the outdoors, shopping, chilling out and – our speciality – dark tourism ! And yes, I did cheat; a few of these places aren’t in Thimphu, but they’re quick and easy half-day trips (all within a 30 minute drive of Thimphu City)!

Bhutan is an extremely off the beaten path destination . We were very fortunate to be able to visit while my mother was living there and therefore bypass all the extra fees associated with travel to Bhutan, and to see a side of it many tourists never get to. Don’t get me wrong, we still had to jump through a few hoops, and our India-Bhutan border crossing was no easy feat, but it was much cheaper for us than the average American/British traveller in Bhutan. If we could afford to go back, we would do so in a heartbeat.

So, without further ado, here are all our favourite Thimphu attractions.

Things to do in Thimphu for Cultural Tourists

If you are a cultural heritage geek like me, then Bhutan will be a dream come true – and the capital is a great place to start your search for points of interest. One thing I love about the cultural Thimphu attractions is how educational they all are, buuuuut, if that’s not your jam, then they’re also just pretty to look at. There are so many Thimphu tourist places that focus on the city and the country’s cultural preservation that I promise you won’t be bored!

Textile Museum

The Textile Museum is a part of the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan, so you know they take their textiles seriously!

On display are traditional wedding clothes of the 4th Dragon King (Jigme Singye Wangchuck) and his four wives, and several textiles (clothing, weavings, etc) belonging to different generations of the royal family. Over the four floors of exhibitions, visitors can also learn about different weaving techniques, the significance of textiles in Bhutanese culture, and, of course, traditional dress in Bhutan.

There is just so much here to enjoy, so I highly recommend you visit. Far and away one of our top recommendations for places to visit in Thimphu!

Pro tip: If you have time, we highly recommend going into a fabric shop to get some materials and having something personal made. It is incredibly affordable and Bhutanese textiles are gorgeous, so you will treasure it forever! 

Folk Heritage Museum

The Folk Heritage Museum in Thimphu is one of the city’s top attractions, and for good reason! The purpose of this museum is to educate visitors on the heritage and culture of the Bhutanese people. 

At the Folk Heritage Museum, visitors will learn about everything from rural Bhutanese homes and agricultural tools to religious rituals and practices. The museums covers the past 100 years of history in Bhutan and showcases a myriad of utensils and devices. There’s even a section on how Ara, a local alcohol, is produced!

After you’ve had your fill of cool history facts, make sure to stop in the Folk Heritage Museum’s restaurant for a mouthwatering traditional Bhutanese meal.

Bhutan Postal Museum

In case it hasn’t come up before, we’re huge geeks. And one of the things that I in particular like to geek out over is stamps. I’ve visited several philately museums over the years, and the Bhutan Postal Museum is definitely top notch. In fact, it’s one of my favourite Thimphu tourist places.

What’s so cool about this museum? Bhutan prides itself on their unique stamps, and over the years they have produced some of the most beautiful stamps I’ve ever seen. Even if you’re not into stamps, I guarantee you’ll be at least a little impressed.

The Bhutan Postal Museum also explores the development of the postal system, and consequently communication services, throughout Bhutan’s past. There are tales of legendary messengers who traversed the Bhutanese mountains, and old postal service vehicles on display. Afterwards, you can buy some stamps for yourself (told you this was one of the coolest places to visit in Thimphu), or have a hot beverage in the adjoining cafe.

I honestly don’t think any Thimphu sightseeing itinerary is complete without a trip to the awesome Bhutan Postal Museum. It’s a real highlight!

National Library of Bhutan

Established in 1967, the goal of the National Library of Bhutan is to preserve the literary heritage of Bhutan. It also aims to make that heritage available to all Bhutanese people, regardless of where they are in the world.

If you’re a fan of beautiful libraries and books from around the world, you can arrange for a tour of the library to learn all about Bhutan’s rich literary history. There are some old texts on display, and well as the largest book in the world (authenticated by the Guiness Book of World Records). Bet you didn’t think you’d find that in Thimphu, did you?

Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory

I absolutely love watching stuff get made, so this was a real treat. If you are also interested in Thimphu tourist places that cater to this level of geekiness, I highly recommend a visit and tour through the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory!

So, what do they do?

The Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory specialises in a traditional Bhutanese paper known as Deh-so. The techniques of Deh-so have been passed down for generations, and is a protected art form in Bhutan. This type of paper was originally used by monks for woodblocking and manuscript and prayer books. The Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory utilises two types of tree bark species – the Dhekap and the Daphne – to create their beautiful paper.

Visitors can experience the entire paper-making process at Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory, from soaking and boiling to pressing and drying. 

Don’t forget to pick up some keepsakes for yourself – or friends and family – in the giftshop. Items available include notebooks, greeting cards and even chili-embedded sheets of paper. There are also various paintings (on their Deh-so paper) available, which are pretty affordable and unique.

Choki Traditional Art School

A visit to Choki Traditional Art School was hands down one of the best things we did in Bhutan, and something we recommend everyone do. If you’re interested in places to visit in Thimphu that are working to conserve the country’s cultural heritage, Choki Traditional Art School is the place for you! In my opinion, this is the best place to visit in Bhutan for anyone who loves art, culture and cultural heritage. It’s also a great place to snap up some souvenirs.

The school was established in 1999 with the mission of preserving the cultural heritage of Bhutan. The students are taught everything from traditional woodcarving to weaving to Thangka painting. Although the students specialise in one area, many dabble in different subjects throughout their studies.

If you’ve seen any building in Bhutan and thought, ‘wow, that’s stunning!’ (and you have, because they literally all are), then you need to visit Choki and see these amazing artists in action!

Choki Traditional Art School is a little ways outside of Thimphu, and you need to make an appointment to visit ahead of time ( contact info here ).

Thimphu Tourist Places for Hiking

Bhutan is basically heaven on earth for outdoor lovers, and so one of the best things to do in Thimphu is get out and explore nature. However, do keep in mind that Bhutan’s altitude can make basic activity feel strenuous. We were in Bhutan for nearly 3 weeks and Jeremy was just starting to adjust!

Admittedly, we’re not the biggest hikers, so these are all entry level, er, walks. But if you want beautiful scenery and a bit of exercise, here are a few of the best places to go in Thimphu to stretch your legs!

Tango Monastery

As a precursor for our Tiger’s Nest trek , we decided to spend a morning hiking up to Tango Monastery and having a look around.

Tango Monastery is one of the most significant religious sites in Bhutan, making it a popular spot for sightseeing in Thimphu for both Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

First built in the 13th century, Tango Monastery was remodelled in 1688, and remains in this iteration today. It is rumoured that Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal visited the monastery in 1616 and meditated in a neighbouring cave. Today, the Tango Monastery is used to train important Bhutanese Buddhist leaders, before they spend 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days at nearby Cheri Monastery.

Fun fact: In Dzongkha (Bhutanese language) ‘tango’ means horse!

Cheri Monastery

Cheri Monastery is another one of Thimphu’s points of interest for hiking enthusiasts. Cheri Monastery, also called Chagri, is a beautiful Buddhist teaching monastery 30-40 minutes drive from Thimphu. And, like every single building in Bhutan, Cheri Monastery is beautiful. 

The walk up is fairly entry level, so even if you’re as out of shape as us, you’ll be fine. We even made a dog pal while we walked! Once at Cheri Monastery, we were lucky to get a tour from one of the monks (supposedly it is possible to meditate with them if this interests you). From the windows, you can also get some amazing views overlooking the valley.

Cheri Monastery is an old building, having been built in 1620 by Ngawang Namgyal. Ngawang Namgyal was the first Zhabdrung (important lama) and the unifier of Bhutan. Since it was built, Cheri monastery has been visited by many significant Buddhist monks and leaders.

Pro tip: Cheri and Tango monastery are very similar, and you do not really need to do both unless you are a monastery enthusiast, or just really love hiking. BUT! Whichever hike you take, don’t forget to say a prayer at the Guru Rinpoche Rock (pictured above) on the way up – he is considered good luck! Many Bhutanese students come to the rock to pray for good grades before exams.

Kuenselphodrang Nature Park

Kuenselphodrang Nature Park is a great place to spend an afternoon wandering through the country’s gorgeous outdoors. Nestled around the iconic Buddha Point, the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park officially opened in 2011 and includes 944 acres of protected forested land.

If you’re keen on a Thimphu sightseeing outing that includes fantastic views of the city, Kuenselphodrang has some of the best landscape shots available.

Pro tip: Bring a snack or packed lunch and enjoy a picnic (there are benches) overlooking the city – and Buddha Point!

Motithang Takin Preserve

Okay, so hike is a stretch; it’s a mild incline and you walk around a section of enclosure. But you know what? It’s outdoors and, due to the altitude, any kind of walking can feel like work for most visitors.

Nevertheless, the Takin Preserve is one of the best places to visit in Thimphu for animal lovers.

Don’t know what a takin is?

Takins are the national animal of Bhutan and consequently rather revered in Bhutan (they actually have their own distinct species). According to legend, the beloved Tibetan monk, Drukpa Kunley, was asked to perform a miracle. At a feast he collected the leftover bones of goats and cows, assembled them and brought his creation to life, thus creating the takin.

They are an endangered species and the Motithang Takin Preserve works hard to protect them. Sadly in 2015/2016 over half the herd died when their normal feed was discontinued and the new batch made many of them ill. When we visited, this was on the upturn, but it has contributed to an increase in visitor fees and extra safety precautions for the takin. Although I think the takin are pretty cool, this is definitely one of the less popular tourist attractions in Thimphu.

Pro tip: In addition to seeing the takins, you can also buy a traditional Bhutanese scarf from local weavers. Jeremy still has his!

More Thimphu Sightseeing Points of Interest

Buddha point (buddha dordenma).

The large golden statue at Buddha Point is one of the most impressive places to visit in Thimphu. If you think the outside is stunning, just wait until you go inside the Buddha! Most of the walls and banners are painted gold, while the ceilings are decorated with intricate and colourful mandala paintings. Some of the walls are lined with thousands of little golden Buddhas, and in the centre is a larger Buddha (but much smaller than the one outside) where visitors can pay their respects.

When we visited, we were fortunate to see a woven Thangka on display inside, which is incredibly unique (most are painted). The Thangka was truly breathtaking, and I felt a little humbled just being able to see it. While the Thangka is not always on display, Buddha Point is still one of the most beloved Thimphu attractions for a reason!

Be aware: There is absolutely NO photography permitted inside of the Buddha.

Thimphu Handicraft Market

If you are headed to the Textile Museum or Bhutan Postal Museum, you can’t miss the Thimphu handicraft market ! The market stalls line the street for a good mile and are full of bright, colourful, beautiful works of art. You can find any kind of Bhutanese craft here from woodwork to penis keychains and everything in between!

(In case you’re wondering: Bhutan has a famous monk who was obsessed with phallic symbols, so yes, this is a totally legit cultural item!)

We’re not big shoppers, but one of our favourite things to do in Thimphu was wander around the market and look for artwork. The stall attendants are all incredibly friendly –  many asked us to stay for a chat and offered us snacks and butter tea – and while some of the items get semi-repetitive subject-matter-wise, we never got tired of looking at it all.

Pro tip: DO NOT HAGGLE. The prices in Bhutan are set and there are four tiers: Bhutanese, tourist, foreign resident and Indian prices (these are actually just the same as foreign resident prices, but they expect haggling, so it starts off higher for this reason). Bartering is fairly common in most of Asia, especially neighbouring India, and so while the Bhutanese are used to it, and will engage, it is considered disrespectful. If the price they give you is out of your price range, then it isn’t for you, sorry. The craftsmanship in Bhutan, on average, is out of this world, so you get what you pay for.

Tashichho Dzong

Tashichho Dzong overlooks the Wang Chhu River, just outside of the Thimphu city limits. It is an impressive building, having served as the seat of the government since 1952. 

However, the building’s history is much older than that. Tashichho Dzong was first built in 1216 by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa higher up the Thimphu valley. But in 1641, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal decided a larger dzong was required and the ‘lower dzong’ was built. Sadly, in 1771, the original Tashichho Dzong was demolished in a fire, and everything that remained was moved to the ‘lower dzong’ which saw countless renovations and expansions over the next hundred years. 

The new Tashichho Dzong suffered further tragedy in 1897 when it was severely damaged by an earthquake. Repairs took five years to complete, but it has remained intact since.

A Dzong is a specific type of architectural building found in Bhutan and Tibet. In Bhutan they are used as administrative, military, religious, and social centres of their district.

Clock Tower Square

The Clock Tower Square is one of the most happening places to visit in Thimphu. Well, sometimes. It does have its quiet periods, but it’s nice to come and admire the clock tower, anyway. There’s also a lovely view of the mountains in the background.

One reason the Clock Tower Square is considered to be a top tourist spot in Thimphu is because the eponymous clock tower is a very important attraction. The tower has four clock faces inlaid in traditional Bhutanese dragon artwork. The clocks were gifted to the Dragon King by a Swiss friend. Nearby is a prayer wheel and fountain.

Lining the square are shops and cafes, so on a sunny day, enjoy a drink or a bite to eat and watch the Clock Tower Square fill up with people. While we were there, we sometimes saw students playing guitar on the steps.

Everything closes at 8PM, though, so visiting after that might feel a bit eerie.

Pro tip: Right across the street is the previous location of Bhutan’s only traffic light. It was installed for just 24 hours, before being removed and re-replaced with a policeman. Bhutan is the only country in the world – and Thimphu once again the only capital city – without a single traffic light.

Dochula Pass

Although not located in the city, one of the most popular things to do in Thimphu is take a day trip to Punakha via Dochula Pass. The pass is along the highway, about 30 minutes from Thimphu, right next to the Royal Botanical Garden (below), and on the way to Punakha (2.5 hours). As it is located high up in the Himalayas, it offers great panoramic views of the mountains.

There aren’t many places to visit in Thimphu for dark tourists, so for our fellow dark tourists out there, a day trip to Dochula Pass is a must. Although to be honest Dochula Pass shouldn’t be missed regardless, since it has fantastic views.

In addition to the views, the pass is adorned with 108 memorial chortens (called the 108 Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang Chortens). These commemorate the Bhutanese soldiers who died during the 2003 armed conflict against insurgents from Assam, India.

FYI: If travelling on to Punakha, you will need permission from the government. This can be arranged by your tour guide, but make sure you bring your passport!

Royal Botanical Garden

On the day we visited the Royal Botanical Garden it was throwing it down with rain and we could barely see two feet in front of us. But luckily my mother had some photos we could use to show how pretty it is and well worth a visit – if you manage to not visit during a thunderstorm!

The garden opened in 1999 and aims to promote floral biodiversity, conservation and propagation within Bhutan.

Pro tip: To get the most out of this beautiful Thimphu attraction, visit during the spring and try to catch the Rhododendron festival!

Royal Thimphu College Campus

It may seem like an odd suggestion to add a visit to a college campus to your list of sightseeing in Thimphu, but it’s not that weird. My mother lived and worked on campus, so this was where we spent our free time and I can definitely say that the Royal Thimphu College (RTC) is one of the best places to visit in Thimphu if you’re looking for stunning mountain views!

Apparently there are semi-regular tours that go to the campus to show visitors around, or it can be arranged through your tour operator. While there, you can check out the facilities, take a walk around the forested area surrounding the campus, or maybe make friends with some Bhutanese students.

National Memorial Chorten

NOT to be confused with the memorial chortens at Dochula Pass! The National Memorial Chorten was built in 1974 in honour of the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. He was responsible for opening Bhutan up to the rest of the world (albeit still minimally), modernising the country and encouraging steps towards democratisation.

The structure is also dedicated to world peace, and has become one of the most significant religious sites in Thimphu. Locals visit throughout the day to pay respects and worship. Although tourists are welcome to visit, it is requested that you do not visit at night as this period is for devotees.

Places to Visit in Thimphu for Delicious Food (and drink)

I fell head over heels in love with Bhutanese cuisine . As soon as I found out that the Bhutanese consider chilis a vegetable and not a spice, I was all in . I’m even kind of a fan of yak’s cheese, which apparently no one else likes. The Bhutanese have totally unique cuisine from their neighbouring countries, while also sharing many similar dishes. As a Buddhist country, Bhutan is super vegetarian friendly (in fact, no animals can be killed in Bhutan for consumption – but meat is still readily available and in many local dishes). You might struggle as a vegan, though. Here are some of my top places to check out in Thimphu if your stomach is rumbling!

Wangchen Momo Corner

Jeremy got sick of momos pretty fast, but I loved them. In case you don’t know, a momo is a steamed dumpling filled with meat or veggies. They traditionally come from Tibet, but are found across the subcontinent. In Bhutan there are mainly two kinds: cheese and beef. But the best part is that they come with this absolutely amazing chili sauce called ezay for dipping.

Although commonly found in parts of India and Nepal, I honestly don’t remember ever eating them when we lived in India (or visited Nepal). But I made up for lost time while we were in Bhutan, and wound up having them as a snack nearly every day.

You can find momos almost anywhere in Bhutan, but this is a local favourite if you need somewhere to start.

Centenary Farmers Market

Where better to find fresh fruit and vegetables than the farmer’s market? Experience a bit of local life, buy some Bhutanese spices (I literally bought about 2 pounds of chili flakes), local cheese or just good old fashioned fresh fruit. The Centenary Farmers Market is one of the best places to visit in Thimphu if you want to get a feel for everyday Bhutanese life, and of course for the food!

If you’re wondering what the red substance is that many Bhutanese chew, this is betel nut. If you are trying betel nut chew, you can also purchase some at the farmer’s market and get a primer on how to use it.

For the cultural experience, I also recommend giving hard yak’s cheese a go. Just beware: you will be chewing it for awhile!

Pro tip: There is also a weekend market across the river on, you guessed it, weekends. They sell everything from local sweets to textiles!

Sinchula Indian Restaurant 

I am a superfan of Indian food. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the second best cuisine on the planet (Bhutanese is the first, obviously), and since it’s more widely available than my first choice, it’s my go-to. But I digress.

Indian food is amazing, and I couldn’t be so close to India and not have at least some Indian food – after all, I needed my fix, Indian food in the UK is awful (#sorrynotsorry). Well, Sinchula, also called Masala Junction, did the trick. It was scrumptious and authentic and that’s all I want, really.

Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant 

I talked more about the museum part of the Folk Heritage Museum in Thimphu up above, but now let’s focus on the restaurant. As part of this awesome cultural experience, visitors can opt for a traditional Bhutanese meal. We got all vegetarian options, but I’m fairly certain there are meat options available because I seem to remember Jeremy eyeing them up. I can’t remember everything we ordered, but there was definitely some khur-le (buckwheat bread), ezay, either ema datshi or kewa datshi and some red rice. The portions are immense and we ate it all!

Ama Restaurant

This is the first place we went in Thimphu for Bhutanese food and it was glorious. This is where I fell head over heels in love with the Bhutanese dish datshi. It is truly delicious!

Datshi comes in many forms. As a vegetarian, I ate three different kinds while in Bhutan (Jeremy isn’t really a fan of spicy food, so I can’t weigh in on if the meat versions are any good), and they were all amazing.

Ema datshi is the national dish of Bhutan, and it is EVERYWHERE. As previous mentioned, the Bhutanese consider chilis to be a vegetable, and this is never more apparent than in ema datshi, which combines ema (chilis) with datshi (cheese) and butter to make a kind of spicy cheese curry. It is served with rice, normally red rice.

Other variations include kewa (potatoes), shamu (mushrooms – my second favourite), and shakam (dried beef) .

Ambient Café

We love a good hang-out spot and Ambient Café hit the mark. We enjoyed sipping our hot drinks, reading our books and appreciating the, um, ambiance. The chill vibe that permeates all of Bhutan was definitely present, although it was kinda weird that nearly everyone else there was white. They have a book exchange and the drinks were good, though! But if you’re interested in meeting other travellers or talking to foreigners living in Bhutan, Ambient is certainly one of the best places to visit in Thimphu to do so!

The cafe also serves food, but we opted for just drinks (fresh juice for me, coffee for Jeremy).

FYI: Internet is available at the cafe, but internet in Bhutan works based on gigabytes used, so please be respectful and do not download or watch anything otherwise there won’t be any left!

The Season’s Pizzeria

I honestly don’t think I could ever get sick of Bhutanese food, but I was travelling with Jeremy (who definitely wanted a change) and visiting my mother who was living in Bhutan, so it wasn’t all about me.

If you find yourself craving something different, or are specifically in the mood for pizza, The Season’s Pizzeria (Season’s as it’s sensibly called locally) serves up the best pizzas in Thimphu, if not all of Bhutan. There are a wide variety of both veg and non-veg options and everything is baked fresh.

Ser Bhum Brewery

The Ser Bhum Brewery was the first craft Brewery in Bhutan. While there is now the Namgay Artisanal Brewery in Paro, I believe this is still Thimphu’s only craft beer brewery. Phew, that was a lot of the word brewery!

Ser Bhum translates to “golden vase” which is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism (Ashtamangala). These are incredibly popular in Bhutan and can be found all over monasteries, prayer wheels, dzongs and even everyday buildings (because everything is a freaking work of art in Bhutan).

The brewery’s ethos is the create craft beer that symbolises Bhutan, which is why in addition to the company name, all of the beers are named after things that represent Bhutan. There are currently three craft beers available: Bhutan Glory amber ale, Dragon Stout and Ser Bhum (Indian Pale Ale), which can all be tried on-site.

Located on the way to Dochula Pass, this is a great Thimphu tourist spot for those interested in the beer-making process, or beer culture in Bhutan.

14 Things to Do in Thimphu, the Capital of Bhutan

Although most visitors to Bhutan must travel with a guide, that doesn’t mean you can’t find some time to do a bit of exploring by yourself, or encourage your guide to take you to certain places. There’s a lot to see and do in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, despite first impressions. The largest town in Bhutan, Thimphu offers everything from museums to craft demonstrations, markets and temples. Here are 14 fun things to do in Thimphu.

Get Some Personalized Stamps

On the ground floor of the Thimphu Post Office you’ll find a wonderful shop selling one of the most unique souvenirs available: personalized stamps. All you need is a phone, a photo and about $8. Scrolling through your device, you can select an image–whether of yourself or a landscape–and choose either to AirDrop or email it to their computers. Within minutes, you’ll have a sheet of stamps featuring your custom photo. They only work when mailing from Bhutan, so be sure to pick up a postcard or two as well.

Visit the National Memorial Chorten

Built in honor of the third king, the National Memorial Chorten is one of Thimphu’s most prominent landmarks. Join others in circumambulating the stupa or spinning the prayer wheels. You’ll see Bhutanese people of all ages, some of whom spend much of their day here, sitting in the shade, praying, or catching up with friends. The grounds and structures are certainly photo worthy, and it provides a great window into the importance of Buddhism in Bhutan. You might be asked to show your visa documentation, so be sure to bring that along.

See the Clock Tower Square 

As the name suggests, this square features a four-faced clock built in the traditional Bhutanese style. Colorful carvings adorn each side, including four dragons, which symbolize the independence of Bhutan, the dragon kingdom. A set of prayer wheels are nearby, and various restaurants and shops line the square. If you’re lucky, you might stumble upon a show or an event, as the square is often used for public gatherings.

Check Out the Traffic Circle

Just up from the Clock Tower, where Norzin Lam and Chhoten Lam intersect, is Thimphu’s main roundabout. While this might sound boring, here you can witness a peculiarity that makes Bhutan so special. Right in the middle of this traffic circle, under a decorative gazebo, stands a policeman wearing military garb. Rather than directing cars in the typical fashion, he moves his arms in a choreographed dance, gesturing like a ballerina. It takes only a few minutes to have a look, but because of Bhutan’s dislike of traffic lights, this act is likely to be there for the foreseeable future.

Shop at an Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar

Just across from the Taj Tashi Hotel, running along a median between two streets, you’ll find a stretch of around 80 handicraft stalls. While there are countless souvenir shops throughout Thimphu, these vendors offer lower prices and a more interesting variety of wares, all made locally. From bows and arrows to oven mitts, you can find everything and anything you’d want to take home to help you remember your time in Bhutan. What’s more, you can shop knowing each purchase directly supports local artisans.

Learn about Takins at the Motithang Takin Preserve

Since Buddhists don’t believe in keeping animals captive, the Motithang Takin Preserve is the closest thing to a zoo in Bhutan. While home to a variety of species, including the muntjac (or barking deer) and Himalayan monal, the most notable inhabitant of the preserve is the takin. Bhutan’s national animal, it looks part buffalo, part cow, and part something entirely different. For the best chance of photographs, visit early in the day, as the creatures congregate near the fence to feed. You can wander around the edges of the enclosure to find the best vantage point.

Watch the National Sport at the Changlimithang Archery Ground 

Archery is the national sport of Bhutan so it’s absolutely essential to make time to witness a match or tournament. This is very different from the activity you might have played at summer camp. Here, highly skilled men take aim at wooden targets sitting 145 meters away. Weekend mornings are the best time to watch, so grab a cup of coffee and a seat. Unfortunately, at Changlimithang you can’t participate in the action, but you can take a lesson at the grounds in Paro.

Shop at the Weekend Market

Every weekend, Thimphu puts on the country’s largest market, which sells both food and handicrafts. Farmers from around the region arrive Friday afternoon and remain until Sunday evening, offering visitors anything from pineapples to a leg of yak, depending on the season. The northern end of the market is where you’ll find the more artistic items, including baskets and various religious objects. Between the people and the products, it is certainly worth a wander.

Browse the National Library 

Built in the form of a traditional Bhutanese temple, the structure itself is reason enough to stop at the National Library. Inside are kept 100-year-old manuscripts, scrolls, books, and a plethora of Buddhist scriptures. The presence of the scriptures meant the library needed to be built to look like a monastery. It also contains the world’s largest book, weighing over 80 kilograms and standing around two meters tall. When its on display, the librarians turn the page every month, presenting new images to visitors.

Tour Tashichho Dzong

While each of Bhutan’s 20 districts has a dzong, Tashichho Dzong is one of the most notable, as it is the headquarters of the government. The king himself works here. The structure is absolutely massive, housing both the civic and monastic arms of the law, and filled with ornately carved temples and dormitories. You can also catch a glimpse of the king’s residence and the parliament building, just across the river. Unfortunately, neither of these are open to visitors. You will need your guide to enter the dzong.

Hours: Weekdays 5:30-6:30pm (closed during government business hours) and weekends 8am-6pm (5:30 in winter)

Marvel at Buddha Dordenma

One of the largest Buddha statues in the world sits 14 km outside downtown Thimphu, on a piece of land known as Buddha Point. Buddha Dordenma rises over 50 meters into the air, and there are hundreds of thousands of additional Buddha statues, 100,000 of which are only 20 centimetres tall. Consider visiting at sunrise or sunset, when the light reflects perfectly off the Buddha’s gold facade.

Learn More About Bhutan at a Museum

There are two main museums in Thimphu, both of which provide visitors with invaluable information about Bhutan. The Folk Heritage Museum highlights traditional life in the country through exhibits, demonstrations, and programming. Its impressive collection of rural artifacts, including household objects and equipment, is displayed in context, giving additional meaning to each. The National Textile Museum strives to promote the weaving industry for which Bhutan is world renowned. The tour guides explain each item on display, along with the country’s rich history of textiles.

Watch a Craft Demonstration

Buying a souvenir is one thing, but learning the process is entirely different. At Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory you can watch and try your hand at making Bhutanese paper using ancient methods. Originally used by monasteries to make manuscripts and prayer books, this deh-sho paper is also sold as stationary at the factory’s shop. The National Institute for Zorig Chusum, also known as the “painting school” teaches all of Bhutan’s 13 traditional crafts. Visitors can sit in on workshops, watching painting, carving, and sculpting among other crafys.

Circumambulate Changangkha Lhakhang

On a hill overlooking town, this temple offers visitors a great view of Thimphu, as well as an introduction to the temples of Bhutan. Built in the 13th century, it is considered the spiritual home of children born in the Chang Valley. As such, infants are often brought here to receive his or her name. Take time to walk clockwise around the temple and through the prayer flags dotting the mountainside just below. Following the stairs will lead you back toward town.

Hours: Sunday-Saturday all day, the inner temple until 5pm

Thimphu (ཐིམ་ཕུག།) is the capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan , and with a population of around 115,000 (2017), it is the nation's largest city.

Norzin Lam is the city's main thoroughfare and is lined with small hotels and shopping complexes.

The winter season in Thimphu is very cold but dry, while the summers are wet and humid. The best times to visit are from mid September to the end of October and from March to May.

To avoid the hefty airfare rates charged to foreigners flying into Bhutan, many overseas nationals opt to fly to Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri and then travel overland to Bhutan. The journey from Siliguri to Thimphu takes 9-10 hours. There is no direct bus, and passengers will need to change transportation in Phuentsholing . Indian taxis will travel as far as the border town of Jaigaon and will not enter Bhutan.

All inter-district buses arrive and depart from the city's bus station across the river from the city centre. It is a 5 hour drive (mostly through Chukha (district) from the border town of Phuentsholing.

Various private operators like Dhug, Meto and Sernya run Toyota Coaster bus services from Phuentsholing to Thimphu. These buses can seat 22 and are very comfortable. Advance reservation can be made at Phuentsholing bus station or online: https://www.drukride.com/

The city center is small enough to negotiate on foot.

The city operates an efficient public bus service connecting the downtown with outer suburbs. The station for local buses, known locally as 'Bus Parking' is located just east of Changlimithang Stadium.

There is a set rate for taxis plying city routes — within the core area the rate is Nu 120 ( Bhutanese ngultrum ), while it costs around Nu150-160 to nearby suburbs. There are taxi ranks on Norzin Lam (near the cinema hall and Punjab Bank). Taxis also cruise and can be hailed at any point. There are shared taxis from the city bus station ('Bus Parking), and the rate is around Nu35-40 to suburbs within a 20- to 30-min drive.

Although lacking the charm and culture associated with ancient capitals, Thimphu has several attractions of note. A hefty entry fee is charged to all foreign nationals (including those with work permits or who are paying the daily tariff of US$100 to the government sustainable fund) at religious structures and buildings of national significance.

Monasteries are referred to by their Dzongkha title of lhakhang or gompa.

To accommodate the national government and the central monastic body, the dzong was totally refurbished and enlarged in 1962, a year after Thimphu was designated the nation's capital. The main structure of the whitewashed building is two-storeyed with three-storeyed towers at each of the four corners topped by triple-tiered golden roofs. Zorig Chusum was established in 1971 to preserve the 13 traditional arts of Bhutan, and visitors are able to observe students honing their skills. There is also a small gift shop selling work created at the school. Bhutan's small population means demand for new and innovative goods is limited. Thimphu has three kinds of stores: clothing, handicraft and hardware. Between these, there is a small assortment of stationery, bookshops, and supermarkets. Almost all shops stock the same goods, so if you cannot find the required items in the first couple of stores it is generally useless to persist.

Haggling at tourist-oriented shops is expected, but the margin for discount is small (unless you make a bulk purchase). However, shop owners are generally honest and there is little possibility to be cheated or offered an inflated price.

Most handicrafts sold in Thimphu are made in Nepal or other Himalayan areas. Exceptions are cloth items, some thankas, goods made of lemon grass oil, incense, and Bhutanese coffee.

Thimphu has few scintillating night clubs . Once inside any of these night clubs, it's a complete glamorous affair. The cost of the entry is quite low too (approx Nu 250 per person). Some clubs allow stag entry as well. The drinks are generally inexpensive and the staff friendly. However, the local youths can create problems on small or no issues and might enter into a scuffle with people from neighbouring countries.

Most of Thimphu's budget hotels are on Norzin Lam (the main road through the city), especially above the Clock Tower. Anything that costs less than Nu 1,000 will offer nothing more than a worn bed, a basic toilet, and about enough space to place a bag. The main door will probably be closed by 22:00 at the latest. Negotiate the rate, especially off season.

Getting work done in Thimphu is relatively straight forward. All offices are computerized and the staff are generally helpful. However, it is often said that Bhutan has one of the world's highest rates of meetings and workshops per working hours. This cannot be substantiated, but certainly meetings are very much part of the civil service culture here. In fact, it is often joked that the last place you should begin a search for a civil servant is at his or her desk! As a result, you should be prepared to make several visits to an office in order to get a task complete as there is a very high possibility that the person dealing with your case will be out of the office.

• ATM . Bhutan operates an international ATM service, though as it is sometimes out of order, it is advisable to bring sufficient cash to at least cover basics.
• Banks . The three main banks in Thimphu are 'Bank of Bhutan', 'Bhutan National Bank' and 'Punjab National Bank'. The first two are both located on the upper part of Norzin Lam, while the Punjab National Bank is on the lower part of the street, near the Clock Tower.
• Money Exchange . All banks offer money exchange facilities for common convertible currencies. Druk Currency Exchange , !F, Gaaphel Shopping Complex (below Le Meridien Hotel) exchanges a number of foreign currencies at more convenient hours and at better rates than banks.
• Post Office . The central PO is in the lower part of town on Chang Lam. It is a large and well organized facility that includes a philatelic department. Mailing letters or packages in Bhutan is usually very safe though, like elsewhere, anything of value should be registered. The post office also offers a custom made stamp and packing service.
• Visa extensions and route permits are available at the Immigration Office, Kawajangsa (above the golf course). Route permits should be applied for at least one full working day before the intended date of travel. A photocopy of passport (pages containing personal information and Bhutanese visa) is required.
• Western Union , Thimphu Post Office. This facility can receive transfer of funds from overseas, but cannot make outward payments.

Government hospitals

• Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWRHl) , Changzamtok. This is Bhutan's largest hospital and has a full range of departments, including emergency.

Private clinics

Embassies and consulates

Buses depart the inter-district bus station (known locally as 'Bus Booking') throughout the day, though most, especially those heading to the east and Jakar / Bumthang leave between 06:30 and 07:30. As the inter-district buses are often full, it is advisable to purchase a ticket a few days in advance, either at the bus station or online: https://www.drukride.com/ . Buses to Phuentsholing depart every half hour until 4PM. Most districts are served by small Japanese Coaster Buses, which are comfortable and sturdy.

Shared taxis are a quick and comfortable means to travel to nearby places, such as Paro (Nu 250) and Punakha (Nu 350) or even to Phuentsholing (Nu1,000) (as of February 2024). Shared taxis depart from the inter-district bus station, with drivers approaching potential passengers. They depart once full.

Monastic complexes are referred to by their Bhutanese title of 'gompa', not 'monastery'.

• Cheri Gompa — It is the first Drukpa Kagyu Monastery established in Bhutan and is at the site where Shabdrong Rinpoche gained enlightenment. Consequently, Cheri is one of the most important monasteries in Bhutan. The structure is cut into the steep mountainside and has a very atmospheric stone stairway connecting its various levels. Located about an hour's drive north of Thimphu, the trek begins from a prayer flag covered bridge and takes about one hour. Tango and Cheri are about a one hour hike apart, and so are usually visited on the same trip.
• Dochula Pass — The highest point on the journey between Thimphu and Punakha , it has a very good view of a lot of Himalayan peaks, including the Gangkhar Phuensum, which is claimed to be the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. Also has a cafe which serves good coffee and decent parathas.
• Jakar — A town at the heart of a sacred and beautiful valley. The journey from Thimphu takes between 9 and 11 hours. A minimum of three days are needed to do justice to a visit.
• Phajoding Gompa — Founded in the 13th century by Togen Pajo, a yogi from Tibet, this monastic complex is a three-hour hike from Thimphu (start from Motithang or BBS Tower). At a height of 3,640 m, it commands excellent views over Thimphu. There is space for camping. Otherwise, the small Thujidrag Gompa (a 40-minute walk from Phajoding) offers simple accommodation (often full at weekends) and cooking facilities - offer donation directly to monk in charge. Even if you do not plan to stay at Thujidrag, this cliff hanging monastery is still definitely worth a visit. Locally, it is famous for its sacred spring water. There are several sacred lakes in the area, though these are a full day's circular hike from Thujidrag.
• Paro — The location of the international airport and center of a sacred valley. Paro is a 45-minute to one-hour drive from the capital - an easy day trip.
• Punakha — The former capital; a 90-minute journey.
• Tango Gompa — About an hour's drive from Thimphu down town followed by a one hour hike, this is one of Bhutan's historical monasteries in the Kagyu tradition. It was founded by the grandson of the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kinley, and houses some of his relics. The monastery offers spectacular views over the Thimphu Valley.

6. Motithang Takin Preserve: Observe The National Animal

The best place in Bhutan to observe Takin, the national animal, this preserve was, in fact, a zoo some years back. Then the fourth King of Bhutan decided against the establishment as he felt the idea of a zoo was not in sync with the Bhutanese culture and their idea of environment as well as religion. As the zoo was dismantled, the animals being held there were freed to go back in the wild. Bhutan, the land of the Thunder Dragon´s capital, Thimphu, is home to approximately 100,000 inhabitants, including the Royal family.

It´s called the beating heart of the country, its the commercial hub of the nation and by far the most modern city in the country, the only place in the country where you will see foreign business people, but it still gives you the natural small-town feel with its charm and history.

However, the mix of old and new remain part of Thimpu’s charm.

The city offers a lot of sights, surprisingly, from the Tashichho Dzong, the home to Bhutanese government, to the newly built sitting Buddha that will become the world´s biggest sitting Buddha statue when completed.

Thimphu is also the place to check out the local nightlife at The Mojo Park and the place to go if you are tired of the local food and want a real gourmet hamburger at one of few foreign-run restaurants in town, the Australian-run restaurant Cloud 9.

Visit the tashichhoe dzong..

TashiChho Dzong is known as the “Fortress of the glorious religion” and is the seat of the Bhutanese government; the king’s office is also here.

It´s possible to visit after 4 pm when the government has gone home for the day. It´s one of the most impressive buildings anywhere in the world, and like all other Dzong´s in Bhutan, built without any use of nails. It´s entirely made in the traditional way.

The famous  Tshechu festival is held here every year.

The National Memorial Chorten is one of the most famous landmarks in one of the most famous landmarks and sites in Thimphu; it was built in 1974 to honour the third king of Bhutan.

It´s probably the best place to go people-watching in the capital because it´s always people doing the kora around the stupa.

Visit The world’s biggest sitting Buddha statue.

This massive statue of Shakyamuni is currently being built at the hill surrounding Thimphu called Buddha Point. The hill offers a panoramic view of the valley.

When the statue is done will it measures at the height of 51.5 meters, making it the largest statues of the sitting Buddha in the world.

The statue is made of bronze and is gilded in gold. 125,000 smaller Buddha statues have been placed within the Buddha.

Watch a Game of Archery in Bhutan.

Archery is the national sport of Bhutan and can be seen playing all around the country; it´s worth trying to watch a match or at least parts of it since a match can last for hours.

Just be sure to stand a bit of the line of arrows since it’s not uncommon that people get hit by an arrow.

Each time a competitor hits the target, he and his teammates will celebrate with a small dance.

Hangout at the Clock Tower Square.

Clock Tower Square is one of the main meeting points in Thimphu, at least when it´s not raining, like when this photo is taken. You can see the youth of the capital hanging out here in the evening; the most popular coffee shops in the city are also located here.

Visit Simtokha Dzong.

Simtokha Dzong is a small dzong located approximately 5km outside Thimphu on the way to the Dochula pass .

Built in 1629 by the 18th Drukpa (or throne holder) who unified Bhutan, the dzong was the first of its kind built in the country.

The name “Simtokha” in Dzongkha (the local language) means “stop a demon,” for the legend associated with the dzong’s construction mentions that the fortress was built to subdue a demon that was harassing travellers in the region. This Dzong is one of the most important historical monuments in Bhutan. Being a former Buddhist monastery, the fortress houses a lot of old statues and paintings of Buddha.

Admire Thimphu, the city with no traffic light.

Bhutan is the only country in the world that doesn’t have a single traffic light in its capital city. Instead, a policeman is standing at the city´s busiest intersections in the city and direct traffic manually.

There was actually a traffic light installed here back in 1995, but it was removed after a few days after the locals were complaining it was too impersonal and ugly, so they went to the “dancing policeman instead.”

Go shopping at the craft market.

The Thimphu Craft Market is several hundred meters long bazaars that offer handmade craft from all over the country; there are almost 100 shops here selling every handicraft you can imagine. If it´s not here, is it not in the country.

Visit the farmers market.

The farmers market is an explosion of colours and smells; this is where the locals come to buy the freshest local produce from all over the country, as well as a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and other products imported from India.

Hike the surrounding hills around Thimphu Valley.

Since Thimphu is located in the middle of the valley, are there tons of hiking opportunities in the surrounding hills.

You can do short hikes up to viewpoints like the photo to get an overview of Bhutan´s capital, or you can do a 3 hours hike to one of the many Monasteries that´s located around the valley.

Want to experience the local nightlife in Thimphu? Then Mojo Park is the place to check out. It´s the capital’s premier live-music venue and bar, with laid-back rock, blues, reggae music.

There´s no annoying trance music here, just good music . The staff is super friendly, and it´s the perfect place to meet locals. It´s not gone take many minutes before you get invited to a table if you arrive alone here.

NB. It´s also a popular hangout place for the local actors, artists, member of the Parlament and even some members of the Royal family, one of the princes from the Royal family came by when I was there.

Enjoy a proper burger at Cloud 9.

No offence to Bhutanese food, but after almost two weeks of rice, chilli, and chicken/pork in various styles, was it great to have a Hamburger at one of the few Foreign-run restaurants in Thimphu.

Cloud 9 offers one of the top 3 burgers I have tried in Asia and the best coffee in the capital. The Australian owner had bought a few tricks with her from the land down under.

Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, sprawls along a valley at an altitude of 2,300 m. It was in 1961 that Thimphu replaced Punakha valley as the capital. It is estimated that about 100,000 people reside in Thimphu making it the most populated district in the country. Thimphu is a mixture of residents from all over the country as it is the center of government, religion and commerce. 

The city is unique. Thimphu is the only capital city in the world with no traffic lights. Small and secluded, the city is quiet and the traffic jams are hardly a thing of concern. There is so much to see in Thimphu that you can spend several days here. The  Memorial chorten , as the name suggests, is built in memory of the Late His Majesty Third King of Bhutan . This monument is special to the Bhutanese people as the 3rd King is “The father of modern Bhutan”.

It stands tall in the heart of the city and is white in structure. One can see people circumambulate the temple throughout the day. Its golden finial is adorned with richly painted Thankas, elaborate mandalas and splendid statues. The shrine of this temple is dedicated to Late His Majesty Third King of Bhutan .

The view of Thimphu valley from Kuensel Phodrang is spectacular. One can also simply marvel at the immense size of the Buddha statue that sits majestically on the hilltop. The statue was made in China and shipped and trucked into Bhutan after it was cut into pieces. At a height of 169 feet (51.5 meter), it is one of the biggest Buddha Dordenma statues in the world. The massive three storey throne holds several chapels. The Buddha’s body itself is filled with 125,000 smaller statues.

This massive statue of Shakyamuni measures in at a height of 51.5 m, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and is gilded in gold. Each of these thousands of Buddhas has also been cast in bronze and gilded. The throne that the Buddha Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall. 3. Semtokha dzong:

The foundation of this dzong was laid in 1627 by  Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal  and was completed in the year 1631. It was the first dzong ever built in Bhutan. It was re-built in 2008 with great emphasis on retaining the original architectural structure intact. At present, it is used as the Royal Institute of Dzongkha Language.

It nestles on a lofty ridge about six kilometers south of Thimphu. The dzong has the series of over 300 finely worked slate carvings behind the prayer wheels in the courtyard.

4. National Library:

It was established in the year 1976 in order to preserve ancient texts both in Dzongkha and Tibetan. The national library is a good resource for books about Bhutan.

Scriptures from all religious schools are represented here, including that from Bon tradition. Most of the books are printed on long strips of handmade paper stacked between pieces of wood and wrapped in silk cloth. Also on display are ancient photographs. A copy of the 1783 letter sent by the Desi (Secular Ruler) to Samuel Turner, a British army officer and surveyor is also on found here.

5. Institute for Zorig Chusum:

This institute imparts courses in 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan. It is also popularly known as “The painting school” and is a photographers’ dream. The students learn various skills like paintings, wood carving, embroidery and statue making. The course ranges from 4 to 6 years. The institute also houses a showroom that sells their work at a reasonable price.

6. Traditional Medicine Institute (Indigenous Hospital):

The Institute of Traditional Medicines, also called “Indigenous Hospital” was started in 1979 at Kawajangsa. In the institute patients are treated using the various traditional medicines and age old methods. The institute also imparts the art of herbal medicines to students.

7. The Folk Heritage museum:

This old and restored building actually replicates a Bhutanese farm house from about a century ago. This life like museum provides a glimpse into rural Bhutanese life. You can also enjoy an authentic Bhutanese lunch with butter tea, chilies, dried meat and the lot at the restaurant there.

9. Tashichho dzong:

The dzong (fortress), along the bank of the Wang chu river, is an architectural delight. It houses the Throne room, offices of His Majesty the King and the Ministries of Home Affairs and Finance. It also is the summer residence of the monk body.

Destroyed by fires in the 1700s and by an earthquake in the year 1897, it was rebuilt in 1902. Today, surrounded by well kept lawns and beautiful gardens, the massive structure provides a majestic grandeur to the city. Visitors can marvel at Bhutanese architecture and craftsmanship at its finest. The entire fortress was built without the use of any nails. Its courtyards are a place of gathering for the locals, dressed in their best attires, during the religious festivals.

10. The Centenary Farmer’s Market:

The Centenary Farmers’ Market, also called “The weekend market” is situated along the bank of Wang chu river. Come thursday, and vendors from all over the country start pouring in and remain until sunday night to sell their wares.

Walk around this market and you’ll find the air go from pungent to sweet to aromatic depending on the produce that is on display, from dried-fish to Dachi (Cheese) balls, seasonal vegetables and fruits and spices. Across the market and the footbridge, one can find a collection of clothing and handicraft stalls. While there are wooden bowls, prayer beads, amulets, prayer wheels and the lot on offer. If you look carefully you could find some treasure amid the heap.

11. Changangkha lhakhang:

This temple perched on a hilltop just above the valley constantly buzzes with pilgrim activity. Tibetan lama,  Phajo Drugom Shigpo  established it in the 12th century. The protective deity of the temple, Tamdrin, is supposed to bless newborns. Hence parents from near and far come here to bless their children and get auspicious names for them. Only a few minutes of walk up from the road, the monastery offers a magnificent view of the city below.

12. Craft Bazaar:

The Centenary Farmer’s market is under the patronage of Department of Cottage & Small industry. It is in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Department of Tourism, Bhutan and the Department of Agriculture Marketing and Co-operatives. This market offers genuine Bhutanese arts & crafts thus contributing in promotion, protection and preservation of traditional arts.

13. Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory:

Jungshi Paper factory produces traditional handmade paper from natural plants mainly from ‘Daphne’ plant species. These papers are widely used for religious scripts, packing materials, hand carry bags, envelopes, calendars and many more. The paper looks a lot like Japanese “Washi” and in fact a lot of these papers are exported to Japan also.

14. Simply Bhutan Museum:

Simply Bhutan museum is an exclusive project under the simply Bhutan museum Bhutan Youth Development Fund (YDF), built to offer a unique experience to its visitors. 15. Zilukha Nunnery:

Located in Zilukha on a high hill above Tashichho dzong , it houses over 70 nuns. The name Drupthob is of Thang Tong Gyalpo , popularly known for building iron bridges during the 15th century. One of his later re-incarnations founded the nunnery.

16. Changlimithang Stadium & the Archery Range:

The national stadium in 1885 was the site of the famous battle of Changlimithang. The various sporting events like soccer are held here.

What is fun and exciting is the archery ground next door. Traditional bamboo or carbon fiber bows really don’t matter. The archers show off their skills and camaraderie with jabs and jibes thrown at the opponent. Songs, alcohol and victory dances are all part of the game.

17. Takin Preserve:

This unique animal, with an appearance between a cow and a goat, is the national animal of Bhutan. There are a number of Takins in the zoo, which is located in a serene, natural environment in upper Motithang. The walking pavement all around the area offers a tranquil leisurely walk. Legend has it that the great Buddhist yogi, Drukpa Kuenley, created the animal.

18. Zangto Pelri Lhakhang :

This temple is located next to the national stadium. It is thought of as one of the sacred passes to heaven according to the sacred books of Guru Rinpoche . It was renovated in the 1960s and possesses some impressive murals and art treasures.

This site was a former battle ground in the year 1885 that was crucial in proving the political supremacy of Sir Ugyen Wangchuck , the first hereditary King of Bhutan. Therefore, the temple was built on this spot to appease all kinds of evil spirits.

Day hikes & walking tour in Thimphu Valley:

1. tango monastery:.

It was in the 12th century that Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa founded the Tango Goemba. The Goemba is one of Bhutan’s historical monasteries in the Kagyu tradition. It is a 40 minute drive from Thimphu towards Begana, followed by a one-hour hike up the hill. It houses some important relics related to the Kagyu tradition. The visitor can also enjoy spectacular views from the monastery.

In 1616 Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal visited Tango and meditated in a cave near the monastery. His meditation helped ensure the defeat of an invading Tibetan army.

2. Cheri Monastery:

Cheri Goemba is said to be the first Drukpa Kagyu Monastery in Bhutan. A steep climb of about 40 minutes, the monastery is located on the hill opposite Tango monastery. It is also the place where Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal is said have gained enlightenment.

The trail commences by crossing a traditional wooden bridge that spans the Thimphu Chu, before the steep climb to the monastery begins. Being the place where the Shabdrung spent many years in meditation, Cheri today has numerous hermitages and small temples located on its slopes, commanding spectacular views of the valleys below. The one -way walk to the monastery is approximately 4.5 km, taking about 2 hours.

3. Phajoding Monastery:

Founded in the 13th century by Phajo Drugom Shigpo, a yogi from Tibet, this monastic complex is about a four-hour hike from Motithang or the BBS Tower. The area is famous for its sacred spring water. There are also several sacred lakes, which is a full day’s circular hike. Located at a height of over 3,600 meters, the view of the Thimphu city is spectacular. There are also beautiful locations ideal for camping. This trail is also a part of the beautiful  Druk Path Trek .

4. Lungchutse Goemba:

By far, this is the most fascinating three to four hours round trip walk around Dochula pass that offers a spectacular view of the snowcapped Himalayan mountain ranges. From the 108 Chortens and mani wall at Dochula pass, the road ascends gradually into white, red and pink  rhododendron  forests for about one and a half hours with some steep sections before branching left to Lungchuzekha Goemba.

5. Takin Preserve, Motithang:

On your way to the BBS viewpoint, one crosses a fenced enclosure that houses Bhutan’s National animal – the takin. These nonconformist mammals are worth a visit for the sheer fact that they look different from any animal you may have seen so far, trust us on this one. The enclosure boasts of a café and visitor centre. Remember, the best time to see the takins is in the mornings and evenings when they gather near the fences to graze.

The Takin is the national animal of Bhutan, and looks like a cross between a cow and a goat. Legend has it that the animal was created by the great Buddhist yogi, Drukpa Kuenley , and it can be found only in Bhutan and nearby areas. Taxonomists place the animal in a category of its own as it is not similar enough to any other animal to fit established categories.

6. Sangay gang – Wangditse loop:

Sangay gang viewpoint is situated at an elevation of 2685 m and presents a wonderful view of Thimphu valley . A two hour walk from the viewpoint leads one to the Wangditse loop. The trail leads through ubiquitous prayer flags, oak, blue pine and rhododendron forests until you reach Wangditse monastery. This monastery was founded in 1750 and the inner chapel houses a two storey statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. The trail also provides excellent views of the Samteling Palace, home to the fourth King. The walking tail ends back at Sangay gang viewpoint.

Drukyul’s Literature & Arts Festival returns to Bhutan!

If you’re a bookworm and can’t get enough of great reading or are obsessed with books and everything concerned with literature and arts, then this will come to you are great news as Bhutan Echoes just announced the 13th Edition of the Drukyul’s Literature and Arts Festival 2024 (DLAF) , scheduled for August 3 to 5, in Thimphu, Bhutan.

The festival, which is very popular and one of the most famous literature and arts festivals in the region is organised under the patronage of the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Gyalyum Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck and promises to be a captivating showcase of literature, culture and art.

The festival is also a great opportunity to travel around the Himalayan kingdom that is often called the ‘happiest place on earth.’ DLAF 2024 will explore the theme of Mindfulness, inspired by Bhutanese values of compassion, harmony and self-awareness and will feature esteemed guests such as Sudha Murty, Anton Hur and Ashwin Sanghi, alongside engaging panel discussions, workshops and readings.

DLAF proudly stands as the crowning jewel of Bhutan Echoes, an initiative devoted to nurturing literature, culture and the arts within the serene kingdom. The festival has welcomed distinguished speakers such as Ruskin Bond, Pico Iyer, Vikas Swarup, Markus Zusak, Padma Lakshmi, Vikram Seth, Kabir Bedi, Kunzang Choden and Pawo Choyning Dorji in past editions.

You can visit the National Memorial Chhorten, The Memorial Stupa which is located on Doeboom Lam in the southern-central part of Thimpu, or Tashichho Dzong, a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the city, on the western bank of the River Wang Chu.

There’s also Simtokha Dzong also known as Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang, which is a small dzong (fortified monastery) in the vicinity. The dzong was built in 1628 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified Bhutan and it is the first of its kind built in the kingdom.
