calella spain tourist information

Calella, the holiday capital of the Costa del Maresme, has numerous outdoor terraces, restaurants and a lively nightlife which –along with its beaches– all make it an attractive destination for visitors.

The town centre of Calella extends for three kilometres and is bordered by beaches of golden sand on the Mediterranean and the tributaries of the Montnegre before they flow into the sea. Its outstanding location makes this a first-rate seaside resort, and it has received the Blue Flag European quality award on numerous occasions. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of water sports thanks to its mild year-round climate and the excellent facilities at its Yacht Club . The old part of this town near Barcelona is clustered around the church of Santa María , a neoclassical construction with a Baroque façade. Other buildings that are part of its architectural and artistic heritage include the Casa de los Salvador (14th century), Casa Sivilla (16th century) and the chapel of San Quirze and Santa Julita. The old Llobet-Guri factory and the Municipal Market are another two important monuments that are well worth a visit. The Dalmau Park is a pleasant place to relax and enjoy another view of the city. Its numerous pedestrian streets are ideal for strolling around the town centre, and the seafront promenade –which offers the chance to enjoy the Mediterranean face of Calella– leads visitors to the lighthouse area. This maritime construction has become the symbol of the city, and stands on a promontory overlooking the whole coastline. Also worth seeing near here are the ancient towers intended for optical telegraphy which were previously dotted all the way up and down the coast.

Description

Known as the tourist capital of the Costa del Maresme, Calella has always been a city open to the sea and cultures, cosmopolitan and cheerful, in continuous growth, a city with more than 650 years of history, enterprising, modern and welcoming. Throughout the year Calella is a cultural hotspot. The wealth of its associative network has undoubtedly become a treasure that has enhanced the culture, the history, the roots of a town that has made Calella a unique city! Its origins as a city can be traced back to the sea, which is so present in the ways of life of its inhabitants. A town that combines different rhythms and intensities, that adapts at all times to the concerns of those who live there and visit it. With a wide cultural offer, Calella is today one of the few tourist destinations in which the daily rhythm is combined in perfect harmony between those looking for rest and those who want to enjoy it intensely. A lively city, which offers corners and places that invite you to enjoy it throughout the year. From Roca Grossa, a space with a very special magic, a privileged and exclusive environment surrounded by rocks and transparent waters where you can enjoy peace and relaxation with the crashing of the waves close by, to the Calella Lighthouse, symbol par excellence of our city until you reach the Torretes, vestiges that remind us of the most recent historical past of Calella with the Carline Wars! Three icons that shape the skyline of our city. But this offer cannot forget the walks under the shadows of the pines in the Dalmau Park or the centenary banana trees in the Passeig de Manuel Puigvert (both the work of the architect Jeroni Martorell) where the soundtrack is recorded daily between the chats of grandparents and smiles of the little ones at home. But if what you want to capture is the heartbeat of this city, the streets, its old town, where some houses recall the city's Renaissance past, and its squares are without a doubt an ideal place. Afternoon coffees in Plaça de l'Església or Sunday vermouths in Plaça de l'Ajuntament help to highlight the intensity with which the days pass in this town. Right here, in the old Plaça de la Constitució (currently Plaça de l'Ajuntament), Calella's first market took place, and it is no coincidence that you find the Can Salvador de la Plaça Library there. A facility that is increasingly becoming a cultural lung for our city. The history that has forged the character and way of being of Calella’s inhabitants can be grasped by visiting two facilities that keep the past very: the Refugi Antiaeri at Parc Dalmau and the Museu Arxiu Josep Maria Codina i Bagué. In the first, visitors can enjoy a cultural asset of local interest, attached to the Archive Museum, through which one of the most important chapters in the history of Calella can be discovered: the Civil War. In the second (Museum-Archive), created at the initiative of the citizens, the visitor can enjoy one of the spaces where the city's past is perceived through the collections that year after year have been filling this museum with heritage objects of the city. Welcome to Calella, a unique city!

History and features of the resort

Calella has a rich centuries-old history – the first settlements appeared before our era. People were mainly engaged in agriculture – they cultivated grapes, wheat, made olive oil. Since the settlement is located on the coast, its inhabitants, of course, fished and seafood, designed sea vessels.

The modern period of Calella begins in 1338, when Viscount Bernat II Cabrersky received an official document allowing him to build housing on the territory and organize trade.

Interesting fact! The tourist destination has been actively developing since the middle of the last century.

Calella is a universal Spanish resort that will suit any tourist, perhaps the only exception is that there are no wild beaches. First of all, those who want to combine a beach holiday and an excursion program come here. In the first case, travelers will find almost three kilometers of beaches, and in the second – a rich historical heritage and Barcelona, which can be easily reached.

Families who are planning a vacation with children should take into account the fact that the entrance to the sea is not too shallow, and a great depth begins after 4 meters.

Beach in Calella

The infrastructure is excellent – comfortable hotels with playgrounds, cafes, restaurants, a wonderful promenade, lots of entertainment, including water sports for every taste.

Good to know! An obvious advantage of the resort is the ability to find inexpensive housing (relative to Barcelona hotels) and not spend a lot of money on travel.

Also, the resort in Spain will be appreciated by admirers of a calm, quiet holiday, away from the noisy tourist destinations that Barcelona abounds in. There are many bays where you can relax and enjoy the silence. Even topless lovers will find a secluded place for themselves if they go a little further from the beaches in the center. And in Calella you can find great places for diving, snorkeling. It’s time to go to the sights of Calella in Spain.

Attractions in Calella are for every taste – natural, architectural. Be sure to take a walk in the old streets near Vila Square, admire the temples and mansions. For example, Torrets towers, in addition to architectural, historical, are also of practical importance – here is one of the best observation platforms in Calella. Undoubtedly, the lighthouse built in the middle of the 19th century is a symbol of the resort. Go to the local history museum and take a walk in the coniferous park of Dalmau.

Lighthouse in Calella

This is not just a landmark of Calella, but a symbol of the city in Spain. From the highest point of the lighthouse, tourists can view the resort and the seashore. The lighthouse appeared at the resort in 1837, it was built, first of all, to perform two important functions:

  • ship lighting;
  • defense against attacks from North Africa.

The lighthouse remains valid today. To see the attraction is not difficult from anywhere in the city, as it is built on the Rock of Gross.

Interesting Facts:

  • construction work lasted three years – 1856-1859;
  • light was first lit with liquid oil;
  • electric lighting was carried out in 1927;
  • the light of the lighthouse is visible at a distance of 33 m;
  • from the observation deck you can see the city.

View of the lighthouse in Calella

In 2011, a museum was opened in the building, where they talk about how the lighthouse works, what equipment is used, and what functions it performs. For many, it comes as a surprise that the lighthouse is also an optical telegraph, and church bells turn it into an object of urban communication.

  • in spring and autumn: Saturday and Sunday from 10-00 to 14-00;
  • in summer: from Tuesday to Sunday from 17-00 to 21-00.

Ticket price:

  • adult – 2 €;
  • complex ticket to visit the bomb shelter, lighthouse and museum – 3,50 €.

This is the best place for unhurried walks. Dalmau Park is well-groomed, green, pine trees, oaks, plane trees grow here, and during the rest you can drink water in one of the fountains. The attraction is located in the city center. The park is notable for the fact that there are no attractions and attractions, trees are planted throughout. The main reason people come here is walking and a calm, measured rest. In the center of the park there is a single playground. The park offers scenic views of the Mediterranean Sea. In the warm season, concerts and festivals are held in the park.

Dalmau Park

In the photo, the attraction of Calella in Spain is Dalmau Park.

Another interesting place, preserved from the time of the Civil War, is the bomb shelter. You can also visit it, watch an interesting exhibition and documentaries.

In the warm season, locals come to the park who like to dance sardana (Catalan dance).

A botanical route is organized in the park for tourists – banana trees grow in the lower garden, and Mediterranean vegetation prevails in the upper garden.

What to see in Calella besides historical sights? If you want to get to know the locals, see their way of life, take a walk on the promenade of Manuel Puigvert promenade. The boulevard is named after the mayor of the city; it was during his time when the embankment was built. The boulevard is more than two kilometers long, there are beaches on one side of it and the city on the other. The boardwalk is decorated with palm trees and plane trees.

Interesting fact! The boulevard was drafted in 1895, and already in 1904 the first trees were planted here, it is likely that the age of some palm trees and plane trees exceeds one hundred years.

Boardwalk in Calella

On the promenade in the city of Spain, benches are installed, playgrounds are equipped, a bicycle path is laid. In general, an atmosphere of calm reigns here, since there is no loud music, the smells of barbecue and fast food do not interfere. In summer, it is pleasant to relax here in the shade of trees, and in the evening tourists come to the boulevard to observe the local population – the residents of Calella walk dogs on the promenade, walk slowly, admiring nature. And on weekends, the promenade is filled with the sounds of sardans, the local population comes here to dance. By the way, this dance even has a monument. An interesting and colorful place is the flea market, which operates on the boulevard. Festivals, fairs, and theatrical performances are held on the waterfront.

Good to know! To be in the city, you must go through the railway crossing, there are several of them along the boulevard.

Not far from the promenade, there is another attraction of Calella – a three-story house entwined with cacti.

It was built in the 18th century, during its existence the temple was destroyed several times for various reasons – an earthquake, then a bell tower fell on the building, then the cathedral was badly damaged during the Civil War. The temple was completely restored only in the second half of the 20th century. Initially, the cathedral was not only a religious building, but also a defensive structure. The project provided for a powerful wall, guns, and the bell tower was used as an observation point. Despite numerous destructions, it was possible to preserve the ancient bas-reliefs dating from the 16th century.

Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Nicholas

Today the temple is included in the list of the most significant sights of Calella and Spain. This is an active cathedral where services, liturgies, weddings are regularly held. The cathedral building is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the city.

Interesting fact! The interior is surprising in that there are no icons, and sculptures tell of the life of Jesus.

Entrance to the temple is free for everyone, but during the service you must turn off the mobile phones.

The attraction today looks like the dilapidated ruins of a medieval fortress, but it certainly makes sense to see the towers. They were built in the mid-19th century and were used as a signal structure and for communication with other defensive structures – signals were sent through flags and fire. Such a warning system was seen in the cities of Blanes and Arenis de Mar.

Les Torretes Towers

With the advent of electricity, the towers were no longer used for their intended purpose, and were abandoned. Today, tourists come here to look at the ruins and climb the mountain. Visually, one tower is lower and the second is higher. The former housed the military, while the latter was used for telegraph communication and officials were based in it.

Calella beaches

The length of Calella is about three kilometers, with the largest concentration of people in the northern and central parts, but in the south there are fewer vacationers. Of course, tourists prefer to stay in the center of Calella, where the longest beach is located and there is access to the promenade. Already after a quarter hour of walking, secluded coves appear, here are frequent guests – lovers of a relaxing holiday and nudists.

Important! The beaches of Calella are all municipal, respectively, free, with good infrastructure, well-maintained. The sandy shore, the entrance to the water is shallow, there are deck chairs, umbrellas – their cost is about 6 euros.

Beach in Calella

Calella has two central beaches, its length is 2.5 km, and you can swim and sunbathe almost anywhere. Coating on the shore is coarse sand, some tourists believe that it is large, but this is even a plus – the water remains clean.

On the central beaches of Calella in Spain – Gran and Garby – there are volleyball courts, cafes, bars, rental points of equipment for water sports. Garby is located west of Gran and ends with cliffs.

Good to know! Calella’s beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag several times.

Roques Forest is a beach that will surely appeal to fans of noisy parties and crowds. You can get to it as follows – go along the sea, climb the stairs and go forward to the bay between the rocks. The coast here is quite noisy and crowded, there is a bar equipped directly in the rock.

Accommodation

All hotels are located not on the coast, but across the embankment and the railway, so it makes no sense to book a hotel on the first line. Whatever hotel you are staying at, the beach will be near you.

As in all resort towns, the most fashionable hotels are located on the first line. If you go a little further from the beach, you can find inexpensive accommodation, including in hostels.

Hotel in Calella

If you travel with a child, pay attention to the children’s infrastructure at the hotel – a shallow pool, a playground with slides and attractions, babysitting services.

If you wish, you can rent apartments, in which case you will have at your disposal a kitchen.

Good to know! In high season, book your accommodation a few months before the trip, as there are a lot of tourists in Calella.

Accommodation at the hotel during the tourist season will cost from 45 €. A room in a three-star hotel will cost from 70 €. But for a room in a five-star hotel you have to pay from 130 €

Weather and climate

Calella, the capital of the Maresme

Information

Calella is just 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Barcelona and the beaches, food and people of this small corner of the Maresme are the true essence of the Mediterranean. The Plaça de l’Ayuntament, once known as El Mercadal, is the local meeting point in this old fishing village that is now a tourism centre for sun and sand holidays. A market is run in this square every Wednesday that is dedicated to the god Mercury, patron saint of commerce.

Calella beaches

There are beaches around Calella that will suit every type of preference and visitor.

  • Coves and small beaches: Las Rocas is a small beach to the south of Calella with crystal-clear waters surrounded by rocks. Calella by sea

Snorkelling and open water swimming are two activities with an increasing number of fans in Calella. In fact there is now a clearly marked swimming route known as Víes Braves that runs along the whole coastline. Visitors can use it to discover, from the water, small coves dotted among the cliffs while they explore the sea bed. Group events are run during the summer months that reveal the incredible nature found in this area as seen from the sea.

calella spain tourist information

Calella lighthouse

The lighthouse is the symbol of Calella and is set on a cliff top 50 m above sea level where a defensive tower was previously located to see off attacks by pirates. It’s still in use today and its beam can be spotted by ships up to 35 nautical miles away. Visitors can enjoy incredible views from this spot, particularly at sunset. The Festival Nits d’Estiu a Calella is held here during the summer.

Its viewpoint has 360° views of the sea and the mountains in the Parc del Montnegre i Corredor.

Faro de Calella

Air raid shelter

Three air raid shelters were built in Calella during the Spanish Civil War. The shelter in the park has a 66 m gallery with three side galleries leading off it and has become an Asset of Local Cultural Interest registered in the Archive Museum. Calella was bombed during two air strikes and this shelter is a reminder of the defence of the civilian population. It has been open to visitors since 2010 who can learn more about the city’s history through information panels and the audiovisual film “Witnesses of the War”, where Calella residents describe their experiences during the conflict and post-war years.

Calella Municipal Archive Museum

This multi-disciplinary space is located in the centre of town in a large, three-story seventeenth-century country house that is connected to the archive via a large courtyard. Highlights of the collection include the Gallart art gallery, the Farmacia Valle, which was built in the Modernist style at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the reproduction of an old kitchen. Over 15,000 objects are displayed and include everything from archaeological remains discovered when excavating the Roman villa to stitch samplers and textile machinery, as textiles were a thriving business in the city during the eighteenth century.

Trails in Montnegre

The foothills of the Parc del Montnegre i Corredor run down to the sea, creating hiking routes along the way. These clearly marked routes are part of the trails and paths of the Maresme.

  • Ruta de l’Esquirol: Umbrella pines provide food and shelter for the countless squirrels that live in Parc Dalmau, which is reached after following this seaside trail under the shade of plane trees and date palms.
  • Ruta del Corb Marí: You’re likely to spot a wide variety of birds along this trail. From the Las Rocas viewpoint you can see cormorants drying their feathers and seagulls circling the Turrets.
  • Ruta de la Guilla: The ‘fox mountains’ are speckled with holm oaks and create a green space that is home to foxes, squirrels, genets, badgers and many different bird species.

Food by the seashore

You can’t visit Calella without enjoying a rice dish on the beach. Is there anything more Mediterranean? An afternoon siesta, perhaps. Typical fish from the area that you should try include John Dory, common sea bream, gilt-head bream, sea bass and cod, while grilled langoustines and prawns is also a very typical dish. For meat-lovers, dishes such as pig trotter stew, chargrilled butifarra sausage with beans, snails, beef with mushrooms or roast lamb all make excellent choices.

Local festivals: colour and tradition

Calella has maintained its local festivals which are celebrated all year round and include carnival, Sant Jordi, the Aplec de la Sardana and the night of San Juan [Saint John’s Eve].

One of the most colourful events in the calendar is Corpus Christi when the streets are decorated with flower carpets made by local residents; the city explodes with colour and floral scents thanks to these street drawings created by volunteers. Visitors have one day to walk the city and enjoy them all before they’re destroyed by ‘giants’ and ‘big heads’, traditional figures in a parade.

Fiestas populares en Calella

But the biggest festival in Calella is held on 16 June in honour of Sant Quirze and Santa Julita. A whole week of festivities starts with dinner eaten outdoors the evening beforehand. Celebrations include giants, fire-runners and lots of music and dancing by the sea along Paseo Manuel Puigvert and under the balconies in Calle Bruguera.

There’s no doubt about it: when you visit Calella, you’ll enjoy the true essence of the Mediterranean.

A Calendar Guide to Events in Calella, Spain

A Calendar Guide to Events in Calella, Spain

The pretty town of Calella is more than just a Spanish seaside resort. Every month throughout the year this place hosts a number of events, all aimed at attracting visitors to the town. Each one highlights the heritage and traditions of this fishing village that has now become a haven for sun-seeking tourists who appreciate a little culture on their holiday too.

Here is my guide to what you can look forward to in Calella, whatever month you might be visiting.

calella spain tourist information

A Year in Celebrations!

17 th february: the carnival of alt maresme.

I love travelling early in the year. Not only does it help shed the winter blues but it also means that you see a place without the backdrop of hundreds of other tourists, which can be really special. Every February in Calella the streets come alive with activity. The Carnival of Alt Maresme is a blaze of colour in the guise of performing troupes, parties, feathers and glitter. Where to Stay

Aparthotel Miami Park – A hive of activity , Aparthotel Miami Park has everything you would expect from a beachside hotel. Pool, snack bar, restaurant, barbeque and pub are all on site and there are plenty of staff on hand to help you organise water sports and other excursions. Why not treat yourself to a wellness treatment for example? I always borrow one of the bikes available here when I am pottering around exploring but when I fancy getting out for a morning hike, the staff have all the info on the best places to head to.

Checkin Garbí – You can’t argue with the convenient location of this hotel, a minute’s walk from the beach. The simply decorated rooms are airy and comfortable, offering lots of space to spread out your guidebooks. After a dip in the hot tub or a swim in the outdoor salt pool, you can enjoy some local specialities in the buffet restaurant or wander round the old town that is right on the doorstep. Air conditioning is a real plus for me at Checkin Garbí and I love the fact that I don’t have to pack my hairdryer either; every room has one here!

Hotel Esplai – Close to the old town of Calella, Hotel Esplai is a well-equipped accommodation option close to the beach and to good transport links too. I enjoy the sprawling gardens, which offer lots of shade, and the two swimming pools are a plus. There is a buffet restaurant here and rooms are spacious and have all the mod cons you might need. This is a sound choice of accommodation when in the area.

About Shuttle Direct

Transfers are pre-bookable on a shared or private basis and drivers are on hand to take the stress out of any onward journey to your chosen resort or direct to your hotel.
