So, you’re planning a trip to Akureyri — or you’re here and looking for inspiration for what to do. Well, look no further. We will share our favourite activities in and around this charming town. But before we get into it, let’s get to know the place.

Introduction to Akureyri & Its History

A view of Akureyri Town in North Iceland, a mighty mountain in the background and the ocean in front.

Akureyri is located at the bottom of the Eyjaförður fjord in North Iceland. Its location on the shores of the Eyjafjörður fjord, surrounded by mountains, makes it a picturesque destination for travellers seeking natural beauty and adventure.

Initially, it functioned as a Danish merchant site before it became a full-time settlement in the late 18th century. It has since grown into a vibrant cultural and economic centre. Today, it is a hub of domestic and international tourist activity, with an international airport and cruise port.

A walking path in Akureyri, Iceland with Mt. Hlíðarfjall and Akureyri Church in the background.

The town takes its name from Akur, meaning “fields”, as the area’s motto is: “where the butter drips from every straw”. Today, there are a lot of dairy farms still in operation. So, in addition to the cows, when driving along the coast, you’ll also see loads of sheep roaming free.

It’s common to hear Akureyri being referred to as Iceland’s second-largest city, but technically, it’s not a city at all. In Iceland, Reykjavík is the only city. That being said, Akureyri is still a pretty big deal! As of January 2023, Akureyri was home to around 20,000 people, making it the fifth-largest municipality in the country.

Akureyri Weather: What to Expect Throughout the Year

An infograph with information about Akureyri's weather averages.

The weather in Akureyri is actually quite good. The North is more likely to get higher temperatures in summer — in fact, I’ve broken a sweat just from the outside temperature on visits up North, an experience Reykjavík has yet to offer me.

The flip side is that winter is very wintery. You’re also more likely to get much more snow and colder temperatures, and for longer, up north. This can result in road closures or generally rougher conditions on the road, which can impact your travel.

Akureyri from Reykjavík (and Beyond)

There are a few ways to get to Akureyri, depending on your starting point:

  • Domestic flight: The easiest and fastest way to reach Akureyri is by taking a domestic flight from Reykjavík. Several daily flights operated by Icelandair connect Reykjavík’s domestic airport (RKV) to Akureyri Airport (AEY). The flight duration is approximately 45 minutes.
  • Driving : If you prefer a scenic road trip, you can drive to Akureyri. From Reykjavík, take Route 1 (Ring Road) heading North. The drive takes around 4-6 hours, depending on road conditions and stops along the way. The route offers breathtaking landscapes, including waterfalls, mountains, and fjords.
  • Bus : Another option is to take a bus from Reykjavík’s Mjódd Bus Terminal. The public transportation service, Strætó, provides scheduled services to Akureyri via bus number 57. The journey takes approximately 7-8 hours, with stops at various towns along the way.
  • Cruise ship : During the summer, Akureyri is a popular port of call for cruise ships visiting Iceland. If you are on a cruise, check with your cruise line for specific details on arrival and departure arrangements.

5 Top Sights to See in Akureyri

Akureyri, the largest settlement in North Iceland, is known for its rich culture and history. With a population of around 20,000, the city has a small-town feel. Still, it offers a variety of cultural experiences for visitors to enjoy, not to mention countless natural attractions.

So, let’s dive into some of the top attractions you won’t want to miss in this vibrant town.

1. Akureyri Church

Akureyri Church in the winter time

With its distinctive stepped roof and towering spire visible from all over town, Akureyri Church stands as the area’s most recognizable landmark.

This Neo-Gothic structure was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, one of Iceland’s most renowned architects, who also designed the famous Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík. Inside, you’ll find beautiful stained-glass windows and one of the largest organs in Iceland.

Stop by and see who among you is the fastest to climb the 130 steps that lead up to this impressive landmark. These steps are the subject of several traditional town competitions, from a simple “who can get up there the fastest” to “who can stay on their BMX and not hurt themselves as they ride down the steps”.

2. Akureyri Botanical Garden

No visit to Akureyri is complete without a trip to the Botanic Garden. This place is home to over 7000 plant species and a lovely café. On a hot day, the locals rush here to get shade under the trees.

One of my favourite things that happened to me in Akureyri happened right here. I was enjoying my day with the family when we spotted the president of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhanneson. He was just chilling on the grass, like all the other guests. This is a big reason to love Iceland and Icelanders – even the president can walk around safe and undisturbed.

3. Akureyri Art Museum & Hof Cultural And Conference Center

The Akureyri Art Museum and Hof Cultural Center are two of Akureyri’s most popular cultural attractions.

The Akureyri Art Museum is housed in a beautifully restored building and features a wide range of contemporary and modern art exhibitions. It showcases the work of both Icelandic and international artists, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and multimedia works. The exhibits change regularly, so there’s always something new to see.

The Hof Cultural Center, located in a modern building near the town centre, is a hub for cultural activities and events in Akureyri. The centre features a state-of-the-art concert hall, a cinema, a restaurant, and various exhibition spaces, including galleries showcasing contemporary art, photography, and design.

Easily accessible by road from Akureyri is the stunning Goðafoss Waterfall, aka “Waterfall of the Gods”.

Akureyri is an excellent destination if you’re travelling with children, and Jólahúsið is a must-see for all families. Jólahúsið, or “the Christmas House”, is, as the name suggests, a tribute to Christmas and all things related to this festive season.

Inside, you’ll find a variety of Christmas decorations and gifts, from traditional Icelandic sweaters to more modern items. The shop also stocks a selection of local delicacies, such as smoked lamb and leaf bread.

  • Find out why you need to visit Iceland at Christmas time here

Akureyri is a beautiful place during the wintertime. Aside from its festive lights and snowy landscapes, Akureyri offers excellent opportunities to witness the dancing lights of the Northern Lights.

  • Find Northern Light Tours here

Northern Lights hunting in Akureyri is an exhilarating adventure that takes you into the heart of North Iceland’s wilderness. Guided tours are available to take you to optimal viewing spots away from city lights, increasing your chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon.

On clear nights, the vibrant ribbons of green, pink, and purple illuminate the dark sky, creating a magical spectacle. The expert guides provide insights into the science and folklore surrounding the Northern Lights that only enhances the experience.

3. Hiking Around the Countryside

Akureyri is an excellent destination for hiking enthusiasts, with plenty of stunning trails and hiking routes. The city is surrounded by mountains and valleys, and the nearby Mývatn Area offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Iceland.

One of the most popular hiking routes in Akureyri is the Súlur Trail, which takes you to the summit of Súlur, a prominent mountain that rises over the city. The trail is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. The local authorities advise setting aside 4.5 to 6 hours for the trip if you drive to the foot of the mountain. Add about 2 more hours if you plan to start the hike in the town.

Other popular hiking destinations in the Akureyri area include the scenic Goðafoss waterfall, the otherworldly Hverir geothermal area, and the Kjarnaskógur Forest, an excellent spot for a relaxing stroll or a family picnic.

4. Whale Watching from Akureyri

Whale watching is a popular activity in and around Akureyri, thanks to the abundant marine life in the nearby waters.

Several companies offer whale-watching tours from Akureyri’s harbour or nearby towns, taking visitors onto the fjord to search for humpback whales, minke whales, and other species that call these waters home. In the summer, you may even spot a puffin or two.

5. Geothermal Bathing in North Iceland

A woman relaxing in blue waters at the Mývatn Nature Baths in North Iceland

Akureyri is famous all over Iceland for its public swimming pool. This place is a must-visit for anyone, with or without kids. If you dare, try the water slide that my family has dubbed “the toilet”. You’ll know why once you’re in it: it’s a round, hollow shell where you’re swirled around the inside until you are “flushed” out through a drain in the bottom.

  • Take a dip in geothermal waters with one of these Spa & Swimming Pool Tours

Another popular option is the Mývatn Nature Baths, located outside Akureyri in the Lake Mývatn area. However, a new addition to the local bathing scene is the Forest Lagoon, which has a quirky history.

While digging a tunnel through a mountain, workers accidentally struck a natural water source and thus created a new waterfall. The water came from a natural geothermal spring, making the waterfall perhaps the warmest in the world. Now, the water has been diverted to a spa with two geothermal pools, a Finnish dry sauna, and amazing views!

5 Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures in Akureyri

A silhouette of an Icelandic Horse at sunset

Akureyri and its surroundings are filled with hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path adventures you won’t find in any tourist guide. From exploring the stunning islands of the Eyjafjörður Fjord to exploring the charming turf houses at Laufás, there’s so much to discover. You can even visit a petting zoo or dog sledding and enjoy the region’s natural beauty.

I highly recommend getting off the tourist trail and exploring these 5 lesser-known places. You won’t regret it!

1. Boat Tours to the Arctic Circle

You can even take a plane to Grímsey from Akureyri Airport.

Exploring the culinary delights of Akureyri is a must-do for any food lover, and here are my 5 favourite places to eat and drink. Bon appétit!

1. Beer Spa

A man soaking in a tub filled with a beer, holding at glass of beer at the Beer Spa in North Iceland

I recently discovered something really cool in Árskógssandur, about half an hour’s drive from Akureyri – a beer spa ! Yes, you heard it right. It’s a place where you can relax and soak in a warm tub filled with beer. Not only is it incredibly relaxing, but the beer is infused with natural ingredients like hops, yeast, and barley, which are great for your skin. Do resist the urge to drink your bath water, though, and stick to the beer they serve on tap.

Afterwards, you can unwind in a cosy relaxation area and even enjoy a cold pint of beer. It’s a unique and rejuvenating experience that I highly recommend checking out if you’re in the area! Cheers!

2. Unique Fast Food

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pylsuvagninn á Akureyri (@icelandic_hot_dog)

One of the more known dishes in Iceland is Akureyringur or “Akureyri Style”, a particular burger that stems from here. According to local legend, the residents of Akureyri were reluctant to take on board this new type of fast food when it first arrived in the 1950s. That is until someone suggested putting french fries between the buns. Later, they thought to add french fries to their hot dogs as well.

But they didn’t stop there. Akureyri is now famous around the country for its unique take on classic fast foods. Aside from an Akureyringur burger, deep-fried hot dogs are also quite common here.

And speaking of hot dogs, one of the most famous eateries in town is a humble hot dog stand, Pylsuvagninn. Icelanders have staked their claim on their version of a hot dog, but Akureyri has taken it to a new level. For adventurous eaters, you can try the Blue Cheese Dog, Tuna Dog, Hot Dog with Red Cabbage, and even an English Breakfast Dog.

3. Ice Cream

When in Iceland , you have to have at least one ice cream. Akureyri is home to the country’s most famous ice cream store, Brynjuís. It is also Iceland’s oldest ice cream shop, with its original soft serve ice cream style, called “the old fashioned”.

If you’re up for the challenge, try a bragðarefur (which translates to “flavour fox”). This is soft ice, and lots of it, mixed with your choice of candy or fruit.

4. Vogafjos Café & Farm

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vogafjós Farm Resort (@vogafjos)

Vogafjós farm and café is a unique destination located a short drive from Akureyri. This cosy eatery has gained popularity for its warm and inviting atmosphere, attentive service, and delicious culinary offerings. It is situated on a working farm, where visitors can experience the daily life of farmers and their animals.

The café serves delicious local food, including homemade cheese, smoked trout, and lamb dishes. While enjoying your meal, you can enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Mývatn or the farm’s cows while they are milked. You can even go into the cowshed to pet the animals and try fresh milk.

5. Græni Hatturinn

If nightlife and concerts are more your thing, the famous Græni Hatturinn is a must. Translated as “The Green Hat,” it is a café, bar, and music venue that showcases the town’s thriving cultural scene. Located in the heart of Akureyri, the Græni Hatturinn is known for its cosy and eclectic interior, adorned with colourful decorations and artwork.

The venue hosts a variety of events, including live music performances, DJ sets, poetry readings, and art exhibitions. It is a hub for local artists and musicians and a welcoming space for residents and visitors to enjoy a lively and diverse range of entertainment. So whether you want to unwind with a cup of coffee during the day or enjoy a vibrant night out, the Græni Hatturinn offers a unique experience in Akureyri’s cultural landscape.

Tips for Getting Around and Making the Most of Your Visit

Akureyri Church and the steps leading up to it on a sunny day in North Iceland.

Getting around Akureyri is easy with its compact size and walkable streets. A word of warning: Akureyri is hilly. Like, silly hilly. So no one will blame you if you choose public transport, which is free in the whole town.

While exploring, keep your eyes peeled! This charming town has beautiful murals, sculptures, heart-shaped stoplights, and a cosy high street. While you’re at it, keep your nose peeled as well, if that is a thing. You might notice the smell of the industrial coffee roasters or the hangikjöt factory.

If you want to explore further out, renting a car is a great option. It also gives you the freedom to visit hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations that may not be easily accessible by public transportation. You can also venture further out and explore the Lake Mývatn area, Húsavík Town and the Diamond Circle .

Lastly, remember to embrace the unexpected and have a flexible mindset while exploring Akureyri. It’s often the unplanned moments and spontaneous adventures that make a trip truly memorable.

Akureyri Travel Guide

Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland

Akureyri, ‘The Capital of the North’ is a town in the fjord Eyjafjörður in North Iceland.

It lies just 100 kilometres (62 miles) away from the Arctic Circle. It is Iceland’s second-largest urban area with a population of about 19,500.

Learn more about this area on an Akureyri tour .

Akureyri is an important fishing centre and port, but in the last few years, tourism, industry, higher education and services have become the fastest growing sectors of the economy.

An airport is located about three kilometres (two miles) from the centre and a large number of cruise ships lay anchor in its busy harbor.

Traditionally, Akureyri has survived on fisheries and some of Iceland’s largest fishing companies such as Samherji, have their headquarters there. Other large companies are also based here, and in recent years, a number of well-known breweries have begun calling Akureyri their home, such as the Einstök brewery and Víking brugghús brewery.

SAk (Akureyri Hospital) is also a significant employer in the area and is one of two major hospitals in Iceland.

Akureyri has excellent facilities for travellers and is located a short drive from many of Iceland’s top natural, cultural and historical attractions. Additionally, one of Iceland's best skiing sites is found by Akureyri, at Hlíðarfjall and it is the location for AK Extreme , an annual skiing and snowboarding festival.

Nature & Landscape

Akureyri is surrounded by mountains

Akureyri is surrounded by mountains, the highest one being Kerling at 1,538 metres (5,064 feet). The area around it has rich agriculture and a beautiful mountain ring.

The island of Hrísey sits in the middle of Eyjafjörður and Grímsey Island , which straddles the Arctic Circle; both islands belong to the municipality of Akureyri. Hrísey is often called 'The Pearl of Eyjafjörður’ and Grímsey 'The Pearl of the Arctic', and these beautiful and peaceful islands are highly popular with travellers.

Both are also home to puffins.

Furthermore, Akureyri is a very popular place to stay due to its proximity to  Lake Mývatn . This is one of the country’s most popular destinations, due to its incredible natural beauty, intense geothermal activity, a wealth of birdlife and many surrounding sites, including Dettifoss waterfall , the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

Dettifoss waterfall is easy to reach from Akureyri.

It is also close to the seal-watching capital of Iceland, Hvammstangi , on the Vatnsnes Peninsula . This peninsula is also home to the captivating ‘elephant rock’ formation, called Hvítserkur .

The convenience of Akureyri is added to by its position on the Icelandic  Ring Road , a route that encircles the country, passing almost every major destination. This means that reaching it from Reykjavík is little trouble, even in winter and the journey takes just under five hours.

History & Culture

Downtown Akureyri

During World War II, Akureyri was an essential site for the Allies and the town grew considerably after the war, as people increasingly moved to urban areas.

Akureyri has an active cultural scene, with several bars and renowned restaurants as well as frequent concerts and shows. During the summer there are several notable festivals and events in Akureyri and its surroundings, such as the annual Ein með öllu family festival on the first weekend of August and the Arctic Open , the world's only golf tournament where participants play golf under the midnight sun.

Sites of interest in Akureyri include the Hof concert hall, several museums and art galleries, and the Christmas house which is open all year round.

The city boasts the world's northernmost botanical gardens which are located close to the swimming pool which is worth a visit.

Akureyrarkirkja church sits in a prized position halfway up the hill upon which most of the town is built. It was completed in 1940 and was designed by one of Iceland's most famous architects, Guðjón Samúelsson, who also was also responsible for arguably Iceland's most famous church, Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík.

The botanic gardens in Akureyri

Akureyri, Iceland: the gateway to the north

Iceland is often said to have just one city, but if there’s any place that can challenge that claim, it’s Akureyri. Billed by locals as the capital of North Iceland, it delivers historic charm, captivating culture, and exciting food experiences.

It doesn’t hurt either that the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful regions of Iceland. Thanks to its sheltered location deep in a fjord, Akureyri gets mild weather all year round. In summer the hillsides are lush, whereas in winter they’re blanketed in powdery snow.

Akureyri town center is packed with traditional wooden buildings from the early 20th century. Walk the main street of Hafnarstræti, which runs to Ráðhústorg square, and you’ll stumble upon a cluster of restaurants, cafés, and shops.

Next to the harbor you’ll find Hof Cultural and Conference Center, Akureyri’s answer to the famous Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík. A short walk from here is the Oddeyri district, which is dotted with more historic buildings.

Activity-wise, for starters there is Akureyri Botanical Garden, just south of the town center. Opened in 1912, the garden was the first public park in Iceland and is home to hundreds of species of plants. It’s a must-visit in summer and has a beautiful café.

In winter, the ski resort just outside town is popular with locals. Although not on a par with Alpine skiing, it’s a great place to get your fix.

FAQs about Akureyri

Where is akureyri.

Akureyri is located at the inland end of the Eyjafjörður fjord in the heart of North Iceland. It’s the largest town in the region by far.

Is Akureyri above the Arctic Circle?

The town of Akureyri sits about 100 km (60 mi) below the Arctic Circle. Despite this, it has some of the best weather in Iceland.

The only part of Iceland to cross the Arctic Circle is the tiny inhabited island of Grímsey, which falls under the municipality of Akureyri. Grímsey is accessible by plane and ferry from North Iceland.

What is the history of Akureyri?

The story goes that the Viking Helgi magri first settled the area in the 9th century. But it wouldn’t be until the 18th century that Akureyri would grow into a permanently settled town. Akureyri was the main trading post in the region at this time.

In World War II, the town was used as an air base by Norwegian British No. 330 Squadron. They flew from the town to protect air traffic flying over the North Atlantic.

More recently, Akureyri has earned a reputation as a creative and artistic hub in Iceland. It has its own university, along with a smattering of galleries and museums.

Is Akureyri worth visiting?

Absolutely! Akureyri radiates an undeniable appeal and is one of the few places in Iceland outside Reykjavík with an urban feel.

There’s plenty of culture to experience here, as well as stunning nature. Just wandering the streets of the town, you’ll steal glimpses of the Eyjafjörður fjord between the buildings. The scene is equally dramatic in summer and winter.

Keep reading for ideas on what you can get up to in Iceland’s second city.

Escape the south coast crowds for the natural wonders of North Iceland’s Diamond Circle

Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes draw nearly two million tourists a year, but few travel to the lesser-known north of the country – suzy pope discovers you can see the highlights of this region in just 24 hours (although you’ll probably want to stay longer), article bookmarked.

The Myvatn series of lakes makes up part of the striking landscape of North Icelend

I celand has been something of a victim of its own beauty. Every day you’ll spot convoys of minibuses, coaches and hire cars trundling along the Golden Circle, with tourists taking whirlwind trips into the ‘wild’ from Reykjavik . At times, you’re more likely to be poked in the eye with a selfie stick at Reynisfjara Beach than encounter a puffin. Or trip over a tripod at the mighty Stokkur geyser than marvel, wide-eyed at the eruption.

Like other tourist favourites – Amsterdam , Bali, Venice and Tenerife, to name just a few – Iceland is feeling the strain of overtourism . But it is possible to escape the well-trodden tourist trail if you venture up to the island’s lesser-known, more remote north. Outside the town of Akureyri, a sightseeing circle of natural wonders dubbed the ‘Diamond Circle’ is an awe-inspiring alternative to the Golden Circle.

Tourism in Iceland boomed in the 2000s as tourists became ever-more aware of the stunning natural beauty of the island. The 2008 financial crisis actually helped this growth as a weakened krona made trips to Iceland more affordable. Shortly after in 2010, the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull made headlines, once again opening the world’s eyes to the glacier-capped landscapes (while also causing havoc to European air travel). These endless snowy surfaces of vast ice caps, towering waterfalls and craggy volcanic plateaus also provided the fantasy backdrop to Game of Thrones , attracting hordes of ‘set-jetters’ to the tiny island. Low-cost airlines like WOW and EasyJet began routes to Keflavik Airport in the south and it wasn’t long before the yearly number of tourists peaked far beyond the population of Iceland.

In 2023, the first international flights started to arrive Akureyri (including direct EasyJet flights from Gatwick), the quiet fjordal ‘Capital of North Iceland’. Previously it would have taken a tiny twin-prop plane, a five-hour drive or an eight-hour bus journey to reach this region from Reykjavik. This region is still relatively untrodden, but it won’t be long before those drawn to Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes find their way to the north.

Before the mini-buses turn into coachloads, I decided to make my base in Akureyri and spend a day following the route of the Diamond Circle, taking in thundering waterfalls, geothermal baths, a sprawling lake in the lava plains, and one of the prettiest fishing villages on the island.

There aren’t many airports in the world within walking distance of a city centre, but Akureyri is one of them. It’s just a five-minute drive, but I opted for the pleasant 20-minute walk along the fjord-side pathway to the handful of hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments in the compact centre.

An imposingly grey, Brutalist hilltop church, designed by the same architect as the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik, presides over the city, and the Hofn (harbour) building is as sleek and black-glassed as the capital’s Harpa Concert Hall. It would be easy – and lazy – to describe Akureyri as ‘Reykjavik in miniature’. Guerilla knitted bin covers with bulging eyes, love hearts for stop signs at traffic lights and vibrant murals tell me the artistic community is strong here. Spending a day or two in the hillside Arctic Botanic Gardens and wandering the forest pathways of Kjarnaskogur Forest Park in a famously tree-sparse Iceland is a delight. Perhaps it’s the cocooning mountains or the tiny population, but Akureyri feels quiet.

There’s plenty to see in Iceland’s northern wilderness and following the 250km route of the Diamond Circle from Akureyri means it’s possible to hit the highlights in a single day. The easiest (and cheapest) way to experience the Diamond Circle is by hiring a car and driving yourself. The limited number of roads in North Iceland means taking a wrong turn is rare. If, like me, driving isn’t your thing, tour companies run day trips around the Diamond Circle thanks to a demand for shore excursions from the Greenland and Arctic cruise ships that dock in Akureyri Harbour.

The route follows Route One east for half an hour until I hit the first awe-inspiring scene: Godafoss Waterfall. These horseshoe-shaped falls are some of the most powerful in Iceland and could give the Golden Circle’s Gulfoss a run for their money. Walking paths snake across the moss-green expanse and I get close enough to the falls to feel the mist on my face. Next, the Diamond Circle passes the expanse of Lake Myvatn, sparkling teal against the volcanic landscape. Lake Myvatn is home to a geothermal lagoon just as milky blue and ethereal-looking as the south’s famous Blue Lagoon. Like its southern sister, Myvatn Nature Baths are geothermally heated pools created by run-off from a nearby geothermal power station. The silica-rich water is a natural by-product and perfectly safe to bathe in. The minerals in the baths leave skin feeling baby-soft and are said to have healing properties for conditions like psoriasis.

Emerging soft and squishy-feeling from Myvatn Nature Baths, it’s just a couple of minutes’ drive to the ochre plains of the Hverir area of geothermal activity. With bubbling mud pots and yellow, sulphur-stained hills, it feels like I’ve landed on another planet. Walkways wind between each geyser and boiling hot pool and, unlike at Geysir in South Iceland, I don’t have to wait long for the smattering of visitors to dissipate for a people-free shot of this ethereal landscape.

Some may recognise Dettifoss waterfall from the opening scenes of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus . Cubic tonnes of grey and white water flow over a chasm as the Jokulsa a Fjollum River cuts through the landscape. From afar, human figures are dwarfed by the mighty cascade. Forty-five minutes further along the route, Asbyrgi Canyon is a vast, horseshoe-shaped glacial canyon shaped by millennia of slow ice melt. Meaning ‘shelter of the Gods’, Viking legend has it that Asbyrgi is the hoofprint of Sleipnir, the Norse god Odin’s trusty, eight-legged steed.

Just under an hour’s drive from Asbyrgi, the final stop on the Diamond Circle is the pretty fishing village of Husavik. The shamble of wooden buildings on the waterfront prompts an endless loop of Ja Ja Ding Dong to start up in my mind – this was the filming location used as Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams’ hometown in Netflix’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga . Boats putter out into the wild North Atlantic where minke and humpback whales frolic and breach the waves. You might even spot a majestic orca or two in the right season (April and May). Husavik is a great place to spend a night outside of Akureyri, affording you enough time to embark on a whale-watching trip. A lifelong fan of the camp spectacle, I opt to spend my time here at the Eurovision Museum — showcasing Iceland’s glorious history of weird and wacky song contest entries.

My day on the Diamond Circle ends back in Akureyri. With the airport so close to town I can just make out the hum of an aeroplane engine echoing off the white-tipped hills. Wheels hit the tarmac of the runway that appears to float on the fjord. I imagine passengers taking in that first breath of fresh, near-Arctic air as they disembark. Now’s the time to experience this northern outpost before the selfie sticks truly take over.

How to get there

EasyJet operates direct weekly flights from Gatwick to Akureyri Airport from £85 return between October and March. Flight time is around three hours 30 minutes.

Alternatively, EasyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2, IcelandAir and British Airways all fly direct from across the UK to Keflavik Airport and there are several daily flights from Reykjavik domestic airport to Akureyri. Hiring a car is the best way to get around North Iceland and there are a number of car hire outfits in Akureyri, or you can drive from Reykjavik. The drive takes around five hours.

Where to stay

Hotel Akureyri is split across four townhouses in downtown Akureyri and radiates sleek sophistication from low-lit lounges. Its NORTH restaurant is a fine dining affair with a tasting menu curated by Iceland’s only chef with a Michelin star.
