The Real Reason You Recognize The Actor In The Expedia 'All By Myself' Commercial

Expedia logo

No ... you're not having deja vu ! Popular online travel company Expedia enlisted the help of one of Hollywood's latest and greatest in their most recent commercial . As reported by All TV Spots , the premise of the new advertisement is to show travelers that who you bring along on a trip really does matter.

In the 56-second spot, the main character finds herself in a precarious situation when what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime goes awry. Soon, the destitute traveler becomes the victim of a missed flight, is unable to locate her hotel, and even finds herself in the midst of a tourist trap, tangled up in a sea of influencers looking for their best angles all while serving their very best smize. Definitely not what the solo traveler envisioned prior to embarking on the journey.

Fortunately, Expedia was ready to bust in and save the day trip! Keep reading after the jump to learn who the travel company enlisted to rescue the poor traveler and reset the course of a no-good, very bad vacation on their latest promotion.

Rashida Jones plays the role of Expedia's vacation fairy godmother

Rashida Jones singing in the Expedia ad

As reported by All TV Spots , Expedia brought in the big guns for their latest commercial:  "Parks and Recreation" star Rashida Jones . While Jones is best known for her roles on various television series, including Fox's "Boston Public" and NBC's "The Office," it appears she's not above taking on a commercial gig every now and then — especially when she gets to play the heroine in said commercial .

Just when the wayward traveler thought all hope was lost, Jones bursts onto the scene singing a variation of the famous lyrics to Eric Carmen's popular hit "All By Myself" and whispering a simple, "I got you." In the blink of an eye, Jones, who acts as the vacation fairy godmother, quickly sets about righting all of the trip's wrongs from start to finish, including rescuing the unsuspecting traveler from the tourist trap crawling with snap-happy influencers. PHEW!

As the commercial comes to a close, Expedia reminds the audience that "like a great companion, Expedia has your back throughout your journey. It matters who you travel with." In short: Travel with Expedia ... or else!

Ewan McGregor Visits Some Far-Out Locations In A BTS Of Expedia’s Super Bowl Commercial

With a touch of wisdom about what matters in life, Ewan McGregor makes you want to book a plane ticket ASAP with Expedia's Super Bowl LVI commercial.

travel commercial actor

“Stuff. We love stuff. And there’s some really great stuff out there,” says Ewan McGregor   at the start of Expedia’s commercial for Super Bowl LVI. “But, I doubt any of us will look back in our lives and think, ‘I wish I bought an even thinner TV,'” adds the Obi-Wan Kenobi star, as he begins to walk across different sets presumably for other commercials, each hoping to sell the viewer some new stuff . While dismissing the idea of finding a lighter light beer, or a smarter smartphone, Ewan suggests that what people truly value is not physical possessions. As Ewan walks out a door, “Whole Wide World” by punk legend Wreckless Eric kicks in. “Do you think that any of us will look back at our lives and regret the things we didn’t buy or the places we didn’t go?” he asks.

The extended version shows Ewan pondering more about the types of possessions that people value in this world. Travel is a foreign concept in the time of coronavirus. Still, as vaccinations become readily available and people implement more personal protocols to stop the spread, folks are looking to travel again. Expedia is also running a “Travel The Ads” campaign during Super Bowl LVI. “ :  Car commercial cruising through Norway? We’ll help a lucky winner get there. An ad for avocados? …Then maybe it’s off to the beaches of Mexico,” the company writes in a press release. “Trips (in the form of Expedia Rewards points) will come in a limited number of packages ranging from $5K to a grand prize valued at $25K. View the full rules and details at www.Expedia.com/TravelTheAds .”

To win during Super Bowl LVI, one must follow @Expedia on Twitter, sign up to be an Expedia Rewards member (it’s free and easy to sign up ) and quote-tweet @Expedia relating to the commercial spots airing during the Entry Period, and include the hashtag #TravelTheAds between 3:30 pm PT and 11:59 pm PT on Sunday, 2/13.

Before the release of the full spot, Ewan gave Super Bowl viewers a unique take on what they could expect from the Expedia commercial. Not only did he tease the contents of the ad but he explained why he’s passionate about being a part of it. In this behind-the-scenes look of his Expedia Super Bowl commercial, Ewan said he isn’t selling but sharing why he believes it’s so important for people to travel.

Ewan McGregor

“I think I’m here because I want to encourage people to travel. I really think it’s an important part of my life and it’s given me such wonderful memories,” he shared as he walked through the set of his Expedia commercial. “It made me grow. And I think it feeds your soul to travel. So to be involved in a commercial that encourages people to do that as opposed to aspire to own more stuff, that’s something I’m very happy to do.”

As he shared personal anecdotes about trips he’d take with his family, he physically went on a journey as the set changed from a space theme to a western theme and then eventually a medieval theme with swords. “I’ve learned that life is more experiences than owning things. It does fit me– this advert,” he shared as he walked through the desert. “It’s a sort of cheeky look at the stuff we’re being sold all the time instead of what we’re encouraging people to do.”

Not only did Ewan make a vacation sound really tempting right about now, but he succeeded in creating some anticipation around this Expedia commercial. How is Ewan going to travel from space to the desert to a rainy city in the span of a 30-second commercial? What other fun settings can we expect? Even without the sets, the passionate way he speaks about traveling is enough to get people on their laptops and book a spontaneous trip.

For those who tune into the Super Bowl for the commercials (guilty!), there are plenty of fun ones to look forward to.  Hannah Waddingham, who plays Rebecca in  Ted Lasso,  will be practicing her evil cackle in an ad for Rakuten while  Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on Zeus in a BMW commercial .   Guy Fieri even becomes the mayor of Flavor Town in an ad for Bud Lite Seltzer. It seems that this year, the Super Bowl commercials are more out of the box than ever and we’re not complaining.

Ewan McGregor Narrates a Montage of Travel Moments for Expedia

travel commercial actor

Launching in the UK today, May 16th, Expedia’s new campaign under the new Made to Travel positioning takes the audience on a kaleidoscopic and evocative journey, while reminding them of the unique benefits of travelling with Expedia.

With an inspiring voiceover courtesy of global traveller and actor Ewan McGregor, each of the three films focuses on a recurring visual motif that connects different places, moments and emotions, as people experience them.

In the launch spot ‘Lemons’, we watch a montage of travel moments pass by – a huge jar of preserved lemons, their bright yellow hues lighting up a shadowy bazaar; a dapper ‘sapeur’ dancing in his lemon-festooned print suit, a family tussling with their slice of lemon-shaped kite at the beach - while Ewan’s voice over reminds us that, no matter what they want to experience, Expedia members save more on their travels.

Two further 30 sec spots ‘Bubbles’ and ‘Sand’ will follow, both continuing the leitmotif.

Michele Rousseau, senior vice president of global brands at Expedia Group: “Our new ’Glimpses’ campaign is a natural follow-up to ‘Stuff,’ launched during the Super Bowl earlier this year. We want to continue telling the story of how travel experiences are unlike anything else in life that we can acquire and also remind travellers that Expedia offers unique benefits to those who become members.”

Hector Muelas, senior vice president of global creative at Expedia Group: “The idea behind the campaign was to leverage tangible things – lemons, bubbles and sand – to tell the story of all the intangible moments we unlock through travel. Our partners at Anomaly and our director Nico Mendez really helped elevate the work, which feels very unique to the travel category.”

Joe Corcoran, executive creative director at Anomaly commented: "We want to create the work that Travel deserves. Beautiful, fun, knowledgeable, inspiring. With our wonderful clients at Expedia and production partners at CANADA, we've collected these lovely little glimpses of lives travelled to remind us that we are all made to travel."

The campaign was developed collaboratively by Anomaly and Expedia’s global marketing team, which is helmed by industry and Apple veterans Muelas and Rousseau.

What Happened To Tim Williams The Trivago Guy?

Surprisingly, the Houston native lives in Germany.

Tim Williams in a grey button-down

Travel site Trivago once had a rather handsome spokesperson at the helm. Tim Williams was the face of the brand, but he’s faded from television sets in recent years. Here’s what the commercial actor has been up to.

What Is Williams Known For?

Back in 2013, Williams became the face of Trivago, a hotel price comparison website. His ads perplexed and engaged viewers with his casual attire. He was beltless, wrinkled, and a bit scruffy. His down-to-earth, no-frills demeanor conveyed relatability and trustworthiness. In the sea of pristine or even smarmy salesmen, the “Trivago Guy” became a paragon of hipster chic. This was a guy you could trust to tell it to you straight, not sell you a bill of goods.

Williams starred in a series of ads explaining how Trivago works. He was an expert at breaking the process down, making it easy to understand for viewers of any experience level. Here’s a taste of what he brought to the table:

Williams didn’t just materialize out of thin air, though. He had kicked around film and television for years before becoming a commercial actor. In 1999, he appeared on episodes of both The Sopranos and Law & Order , and he performed a steady number of smaller roles throughout the 2000s. Perhaps his most significant role during this period was a small part in the 2008 Tom Cruise film Valkyrie .

He Has Built A Parallel Career Overseas

Those Trivago spots only scratched the surface of Williams’s career. Williams moved to Germany at the dawn of the millennium and has consistently found work. He’s one of the best-known Texans in the country.

When Williams got the Trivago gig, he was actually already busy with a TV series. He appeared in 10 episodes of Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten until 2013. His resume is dotted with German roles, and he can speak the language fluently. Over the years, he’s found no problem scoring roles in German films or television shows. In 2020, he appeared in the miniseries Unseere wunderbaren Jahre , his most recent part to date.

He Still Has A Very Texan Taste In Music

When Williams isn’t basking in the German limelight, he’s focused on his love of country music. He’s a big Willie Nelson fan and has even released an album of his own tunes. Williams may be the only Texan on Earth with a country album, memorable ad campaign, and a dozen acting roles in Germany. Accomplishing all of that without a belt makes it even more impressive.

Williams’ Legal Trouble

Unfortunately, his hipster image hasn’t always been squeaky clean. A few years after his Trivago gig ended, Williams made headlines for all the wrong reasons. In 2019, the commercial actor was charged with driving while intoxicated in his native Houston after being found asleep at the wheel, his foot on the brake in traffic. The police reported that he failed a sobriety test.

Fear not, however: In 2020, just months before the pandemic ended life as we knew it, prosecutors dropped their charges against Williams. Since then he’s stayed active on Facebook , posting about the importance of vaccination and in support of Ukraine.

The Trivago Guy Is Back But His Future Is ‘Uncertain’

Dennis Schaal

Dennis Schaal , Skift

August 10th, 2023 at 2:20 PM EDT

Trivago Guy Tim Williams' fate in Trivago commercials now lies in the hands of the numbers crunchers. No one ever said the travel business or the acting profession are for the meek.

Dennis Schaal

Three Trivago executives returned to the company in May after a 3-year absence, and two months later they brought back a semi-controversial ad pitchman, the Trivago Guy.

Or at least they brought back three of his commercials from 2019.

Actor Tim Williams started appearing as the Trivago Guy in the hotel-comparison site’s U.S. and Canadian commercials at least as far back as 2014, and did voiceover before that. For many years these ads saturated U.S. TV, and were credited with helping Trivago become somewhat of a household name in North America and assisted its becoming a public company .

These commercials often featured an unshaven Williams [backstory below], who notoriously went belt-less. Incidentally, there were other Trivago Guys and Trivago Women spokespeople around the world. Willams was the U.S./Canada character.

People often considered Williams’ look sexy or creepy, with few expressing neutrality. Press reactions ranged from Skift’s Trivago’s Ad Pitchman: Creepy, Handsome or Just Effective? to CNN’s Does the Trivago Guy Need a Makeover? , both written in 2014.

So far this year Trivago’s Find a Great Deal on Your Hotel commercial aired more than 4,800 times on U.S. linear TV , including Wednesday on BET, Buffet ran more than 3,000 times, and Price Difference is closing in on 900 appearances, according to i Spot.TV. All of these ads, which initially were aired in 2019, featured the stubbled Williams counseling the obviously under-informed where to find the best hotel deals, namely Trivago, which is paying his bills.

These ads disappeared shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and began airing again last month.

Will the Trivago Guy and Trivago Remain a Match?

Alas, Williams’ Trivago Guy — he’s disappeared from the company’s commercials for periods of time at least a couple of times before — may or may not be retained.

His tentative return is part of a changed company strategy, which would see Trivago lean back into brand advertising campaigns, including TV, at the expense of a more transactional, digital ad emphasis.

“Our mission is to reinvigorate Trivago’s growth by enhancing our brand presence,” CEO Johannes Thomas told Skift. “This involves fostering a culture focused on testing, measuring, and learning. We’re taking a more experimental approach to our TV commercials, seeking improved traveler engagement. The ‘Mr. Trivago’ concept, a powerful TV campaign, was aired with different actors globally. Its revival acts as a litmus test for our ongoing advertising strategy, shaping our upcoming marketing initiatives. Tim’s participation in future campaigns is yet uncertain.”

In addition to Williams’ appearance in future Trivago commercials and the Trivago Guy campaign itself being at risk if the tests don’t go well, some would argue that Trivago’s fate, too, is uncertain — hence the apparent urgency of the leadership change three months ago. The company, which is majority-owned by Expedia Group, faces stiff competition, was profitable in its most recent financial quarter, but was trading at $1.18 per share on Thursday.

The Important Things You Need to Know About Actor Tim Williams

  • The reason Williams initially appeared unshaven in Trivago commercials in 2014 is he had just received an acting gig in Guten Zeiten Schlechte Zieten , a TV soap opera in Germany, and had to play a rocker with a hairy countenance, according to a profile in Culture Map Houston, where he was born in 1966. Williams plays guitar and has been in several bands in real life.
  • Williams has lived in Berlin, Germany for more than two decades, and speaks fluent German. Trivago is based in Dusseldorf, Germany, and likely discovered him through his domestic TV appearances there.
  • His acting credits include the Cosby Show, Law and Order, the Sopranos, Labyrinth of Lies, My So-Called Life, and Valkyrie, among others.
  • He visited Skift’s offices — when we had an office — twice over the years. Some Skifters in the office were definitely not in the thinking him creepy crowd.

Keegan-Michael Key stars in the 2024 Choice Hotels commercial

travel commercial actor

The famous comedian is the new brand ambassador chosen by Choice Hotels for the 2024 commercial campaign: he’ll show us many things.

A new face is populating the Choice Hotels 2024 commercial campaign: it’s Keegan-Michael Key, bringing his energy and good mood in a set of ads that the American hotel group will run for the whole year. The actor and comedian is one of the most recognizable faces on TV and social networks and will help Choice Hotels reach a broader audience.

As one half of the iconic comedy duo Key & Peele, in the last few Keegan-Michael Key has become a TV personality who can really drive the world’s attention. We recently saw him in another commercial, that short cameo in the 2023 AT&T commercial with Lily on the airplane . Now, as some users commented on the Internet, Key has “jumped off the plane” and is ready to tell us the story of the many brands in the Choice Hotels group and the several types of clients they can host.

Choice Hotels | A Stay For Any You – Comfort Hotels & Radisson

Above is the first commercial, released in January 2024: Keegan-Michael Key looks calm, fresh, and relaxed while he enjoys all the possibilities available with Choice Hotels. Two elements stand out from the ad: the presence of multiple brands (Radisson and Comfort Inn & Suites highlighted at the end of the commercial, but there are 22 chains in total) and the different kinds of client you can be in their structures. “You can be any traveler you wanna be” is the tagline Keegan-Michael Key says at the beginning, defining the ad’s central concept.

So that’s how he goes, interpreting all the roles he can be in the Choice Hotels: the “breakfast hero,” the inspired writer, the businessman, and the kids’ entertainer are just the first four examples of what you can be while staying in their accommodations. As you can imagine, the short clips with Keegan-Michael Key in all those situations will quickly go viral on social networks.

We will see more ads soon. For now, Choice Hotels has started its new commercial campaign with the right attitude, and we’ll surely enjoy Keegan-Michael Key and his sketches for the rest of 2024.

“With so many choices on Booking.com, there are so many Tina Feys I could be,” the actress/producer/comedian said in the footage. “So I hired body doubles to help me out.”

It turns out that some of the people Fey hired in the ad spot are actually her former co-stars from the hit TV show 30 Rock , including Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer.

Who Plays Captain Obvious In The Hotels.com Commercials?

Brandon Moynihan as Captain Obvious

Considering how ubiquitous streaming services are, you would think TV commercial spokespeople would have become as extinct as beepers by now. But even if people are buying fewer television sets (via Vox ), the internet is riddled with numerous ads, often playing before a YouTube video or in between a Hulu series, increasing the popularity of spokespeople like Flo from Progressive , Lily from AT&T , and of course, Captain Obvious.

You've likely seen the Captain Obvious commercials from Hotels.com at some point. The premise of the ads, if it's not already obvious, centers around a bearded, military-looking man stating facts that should be self-explanatory, ("The hotel lounge is where you want to do your lounging"), hence his name, Captain Obvious. And after defining what's already known, he points out what else he thinks should be obvious — Hotels.com (which he lets us know is on the internet) is the only place for booking hotels.

But what may not be obvious to everyone is who the actor playing Captain Obvious is. So who is this mysterious bearded military man?

Brandon Moynihan will never forget when an NBA legend quoted his commercial to him

Brandon Moynihan Stovetop Stuffing ad

According to his IMDb credits , Brandon Moynihan has been a working actor for at least a decade, landing credited roles in various short films over the years. And before he became Captain Obvious, you might have seen him on his YouTube channel or playing Larry the Pilgrim in the Stovetop Stuffing ads .

But Moynihan says he's never been as recognized as he is now from his plethora of Captain Obvious commercials. He attributes his recognizability to his beard. In an interview on LinkedIn , Moynihan said, "I get recognized more and more, especially in airports. I think it's the beard. I'm also very popular at my kids' elementary school. Picking them up and dropping them off are definitely my red carpet moments."

He said even NBA legends know who he is. After he made an appearance on TNT's "Shaqtin' A Fool," Shaquille O'Neal invited the actor to the TNT Studios. Not only did he meet some famous NBA players, but they also knew him. "I walked in and was in total awe of these basketball legends," Moynihan said. "It blew my mind that they were genuinely excited to meet me as well. Isiah Thomas was actually quoting the 'Obvious Eyes' commercial. It's a moment I'll never forget."
