Signs such as cracks, fogging, difficulty in opening or closing, and air leaks indicate the need for replacement. A professional inspection can provide more precise information regarding the door’s condition.

RV Doors: The Truth About Outward Opening or Sliding Doors

With the RV market growing as a result of a shifting demographic and the growth in the digital nomad community, the variety of RV designs is also expanding (the same goes with RV entry doors). But what should your RV entry door really look like? What are the basics that you should know? Find out in this blog post.

What’s the truth about outward opening doors and sliding doors in RV?

ADR 44/02 states that outward opening doors and sliding doors are the only accepted doors in RVs and caravans. So what doors are considered outward opening or sliding? A hint is that for RVs with a GVM of up to 3.5t, UNECE R11/03 covers hinged and sliding doors, but EXCLUDE folding, roll-up and easily attachable/detachable doors. And for heavy vehicles, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) Inspectors Manual states that a reason for the failure of compliance is if there is not at least one outward opening or sliding door on the left-hand side or rear of the vehicle. So read on to know if your RV door aligns with these requirements.

• ADR means Australian Design Rule.
• Gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum allowable mass of the vehicle when it is laden. This is determined by the manufacturer.

What exactly is the “hint” all about?

If your RV has a GVM of up to 3.5t, then your door latches and hinges must comply with ADR 2/01, and this ADR refers to UNECE R11/03 which covers only hinged and sliding doors and exclude other door types as mentioned above. Therefore, entry doors of RVs with a GVM of up to 3.5t must NOT be a folding door, a roll-up door, or an easily attachable/detachable door.

What about RVs with higher GVMs?

That is what we will clear out in the next section. For these heavier RVs, our starting clue is the ADR 44/02 requirement which is: it must be either outward opening or sliding.

Distinguishing between outward opening, sliding and other doors

While we have to follow the general standards for RV entry doors, we also have to be extra careful in concluding a door type to be outward opening or sliding because…

RVs may have only one access door for all passengers in the cabin. It is important therefore to take all measures to ensure that this door is truly safe and readily accessible in case of emergency.

Now which is which? Let me share with you the common doors we see in RVs, define whether or not it is outward opening or sliding, and why.

Bi-fold Doors / Inward Folding Doors / Jack-Knife Doors

These doors are common in buses and coaches. They may be “sliding” at some point, but the fact that they are “folding” and/or “inward” already defies the expected level of safety which the door must exhibit during an emergency, so they can’t be considered as sliding nor outward opening doors . To expand this reason,

Moreover, as per the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual, even if an outward opening security door is fitted over bi-fold or inward folding (or jack knife) doors in heavy vehicles*, they are NOT considered as outward opening doors.

*Heavy vehicles are those that have a GVM of more than 4.5 tonnes.

If the door of your RV is currently bi-fold or inward folding, you can do a quick fix to make it ADR-compliant. That is to make the panels fixed (not folding) and create support on the side to make it a full outward opening door. Here’s a sample:

Sliding Plug Doors

These doors definitely align with the intended definition by ADR 44/02. It is not only a sliding door but also an outward opening door.

Side Hinged Outward Opening Doors

Since these are hinged on the side, they do not hinder passenger traffic during emergencies. And since these doors can be easily swung open outwards, then these are safe outward opening doors . Also, these can have one or two panels. However, as the door is hinged on the rear it can be blown opened while travelling if the door has not been closed probably or the catch fails. Therefore, the best practice is to hinge all outward opening doors to the front.

Tailgate Doors

This is an outward opening door but with a bit of safety risk involved . Given that it is hinged on top, and takes up the full width of the vehicle, the internal layout of the campervan would be restricted to provide unobstructed access to this door type. These doors are usually provided with additional side access doors when manufactured.

No question – this is a recommendable outward opening door that occupants can just swing open and be able to smoothly leave the RV during an emergency. That is why this door type is common in ambulances.

Fly Screen in your RV Doors

While there’s no current Australian rule for fly screens on vehicle doors, what I can recommend is that your fly screen must be easily detachable or be part of the fitted RV door .

Now let’s move on to the standards with which your RV entry door must comply with.

What are the standards regarding RV entry doors?

General requirements.

• Quantity/Location: At least one must be located on the left-hand side or at the rear.
• Size: Sufficient size such that an average person can easily walk through it without having to turn sideward
• Clearance: Readily accessible and unobstructed. Access into the vehicle must be provided via a clear and unhindered path. No climbing over equipment, furniture etc.

All glazing material in the door must have a permanent mark – the information of which must contain:

• What type of glass/plastic it is
• The standard/s to which the material conforms. Typically, you must be able to see any of these standards:

*These are significantly old standards and could be superseded by the other standards above.

Door Latches and Hinges

As previously mentioned, RVs with a GVM of up to 3.5t (usually campervans) must have door latches and hinges that comply with ADR 2/01 . The case is the same with door locks.

While there are no current rules for those components in heavier RVs, a good basis would be to have at minimum the same requirements as that for the RV of GVM up to 3.5t.

Access Height and Dimensions

There are no current rules for these, but the best practice would be to use ADR 58/00 as a guide. This ADR stipulates these requirements:

Wheelchair Access

If your RV is designed to accommodate wheelchairs, then based on AS/NZS 10542.1 your doorway must fit these MINIMUM measurements:

• Width = 800 mm
• Height = 1400 mm
• Internal headroom = 1500 mm

Possible Additional Requirements

It’s always an advantage to get the first dibs on what’s to come, so below are RV entry door conditions that may be turned into requirements in the near future (as per the Road Vehicle Standards Act Implementation Consultation Framework).

It would be nice if you could be one step ahead by considering the factors below during your on-going repairs or retrofits in your RV entry door (if any). Note though that these are only for RVs with a GVM greater than 3.5 tonnes.

• Is your outward opening door fitted as part of converting your vehicle into an RV? If so, then your door must be hinged from the front.
• You may install a Bus style inward opening glide-away door only if: a. it has an emergency exit release, and b. it does not protrude beyond the outermost access step
• Is your RV a converted one, and accessible only through a left-hand front door? If so, then you must fit an aisle gauge to maintain the proper clearance between that front door, the seats and the living area.

So I hope this has answered all your questions about the type of doors allowed in RV’s. By now you have a wider awareness about the compliance needs of your RV entry door. Long-Term Living in a Destination Trailer

Sometimes it’s all about the journey. Other times it’s about the destination. As their name implies, destination trailers are about what’s at the end of the road.

Unlike typical RVs or travel trailers, destination trailers are not ideal for endless cross-country road trips. Due to their height and weight, you’re going to pay more for gas and long journeys will feel more cumbersome.

Instead, destination trailers they are perfect for parking at that special spot where you want to kick up your feet and stay awhile.

These large travel trailers are self-contained, meaning they can run off of their own on-board electrical and feature fresh, gray, and wastewater tanks so you can live off the grid . They are also equipped to connect to power, water, and septic, for when you have the option for hookups. Your destination trailer gives you the freedom to choose where you call home.

Square Footage and Interior Features of a Destination Trailer

Destination trailers come in various sizes but have a maximum square footage of 400 sq. feet with ceiling heights of nearly 7 feet. Many of these trailers have additional slide outs that add to the usable space and create a spacious home-like feel. They have plenty of living space for the family and entertaining guests.

These homes on wheels usually feature a gourmet-style kitchen with a deep sink and 18-cubic-foot residential refrigerator. Entertain or cozy up with the family in the large gathering area that’s often equipped with a fireplace. One can expect lots of natural light with bay windows, sliding glass doors, and even floor-to-ceiling windows.

Many models come with 2 bedrooms and even a loft to maximize interior space. Sleep easy at night on a king-sized bed while the kids are in their own room in bunk beds. You can even find destination trailers with a full bath and second half bath.

Unlike other travel trailers, destination trailers are built to look and feel like home with their increased size and residential styling.

Towing Options

These trailers are designed with comfort in mind, opposed to mobility. Although many destination trailers weigh around 10,000 pounds, they do not require a commercial vehicle for towing. They are still a bumper-towed trailer, and can be pulled with most one-ton trucks with a proper tow package.

The 2 hardest parts of towing a trailer are lining up the tongue and hitch, and backing into that perfect spot. Save your trailer some dents and yourself from high blood pressure with a trusty pair of  two way radios –they make it easy for you to communicate with your spotter.

Destination trailers are not built for traveling the open road for days on end. They are built to travel to a space and sit there and be used. Lots of people will purchase a recreation property such as a lake or mountain property and use a destination trailer for their housing.

These trailers can simple to locate and are a lot quicker than building your own home, and are the only item you can use in some locations if you are in a high water zone or no build zone.

Here are our top 5 favorite destination trailers with bunks!

Forest River Sandpiper 399LOFT

The Forest River Sandpiper 399 Loft destination trailer does nothing but wow you with its features. This travel trailer comes with four slide-outs creating a spacious interior making it feel like a home instead of an RV.

As you open the main entry door, yes there is more than one entry in this trailer, you will notice it is not a standard travel trailer door. It is a long, floor to ceiling sliding glass door. This sliding glass door brings in so much light into the main living area. It is also tinted so that you can see out but others cannot see in during the day, however, there is a shade that covers the door for privacy at night.

The second entry is located towards the rear of the trailer as a private entry for the master bedroom. This entry comes with a standard travel trailer door.

As you enter the main living area, it opens to the kitchen and living room. This area houses three of the four slide-outs. The kitchen is very large with several countertops and a center island. The center island is perfect for entertaining family and friends. The island houses the sink, which is great for whoever is doing the dishes.

You and your guests can still be in the conversation while cleaning up. The sink has a removable sink cover that can go on top of the sink so that you can use the entire center island for entertaining. There are two additional, separate kitchen counters. There is one on a wall adjacent to the island that is long but shorter in width than a standard countertop. This area is great for small kitchen appliances, such as a coffee maker, or a great space to use as a sideboard for dinner.

The back wall, that sits on a slide-out, houses your residential size refrigerator, stove, oven, and entertainment center. All of the appliances are stainless steel. The refrigerator is 20 cubic feet and is a French-style with two doors that open to the refrigerator and one pullout door for the freezer. The stovetop is gas with four burners. Above the stove is a residential-sized microwave and below is a residential-sized oven.

Beside the stovetop is the entertainment area there is a large, flat-screen TV mounted on the wall with a surround sound system and below is a gas fireplace. Yes, a fireplace! This is a great feature to make the travel trailer feel cozy and like you are at home.

There are two sofas in this living room. One is large enough for three people to sit comfortably and it sits on another one of the slide-outs. It also converts to a queen-sized bed. The other sofa is a theater sofa that reclines and has cup holders. This sofa seats two people and also sits on another slide-out. Beside this sofa is the kitchen table with four stand-alone chairs.

Finally, throughout the kitchen and living room are beautiful wood cabinets. The cabinets are located towards the top of the walls right below the ceiling. They are high and out of the way but are great for storage. Also, the wood-like flooring is beautiful. It complements the wood cabinets and is located throughout the kitchen, living room, and hallway.

As you walk down the hallway, you will see the bathroom on the right. It is a good size bathroom but it is still a little tight. The bathroom comes with a separate toilet, vanity, and shower/tub combination. Right past the bathroom is a staircase leading you to the loft which is our favorite part. As you walk the curved staircase you will see an enclosed loft with two mattresses.

The mattresses are a bit larger than a twin but smaller than a full. This is a perfect area for kids. There are also additional storage cabinets in the loft. As you head back down the stairs, you will see a door leading to the master bedroom. This large room has a king-sized bed, a large closet, and a chest od drawers for plenty of clothes. The king-sized bed sits on the final slide-out which creates that roomy feel in the master bedroom. There is also carpet in the bedroom making it feel like you are home.

This destination trailer really has it all. It is a wonderful choice for a large family or for those who like to entertain. Please see the additional specs below.

Keystone Retreat 391 LOFT

The Keystone Retreat 391 Loft is a fabulous destination trailer. The exterior has a huge awning expanding the length of the trailer and extends out about 12′ with LED lighting underneath the awning. You will also notice large windows surrounding the living room and kitchen. Along with the large windows, there is a sliding glass door that is used as the main entrance of the trailer. The sliding glass door brings in so much light into the interior.

When walking into the trailer you will first notice the tall 8’ ceilings. The ceiling height makes the trailer feel spacious along with the three slide-outs in the living room and kitchen area. You will also notice the beautiful wood-like floors that compliment the wood features in the interior.

The kitchen opens to the living room creating a great entertaining area. There is an island in the center of the kitchen that hosts a double bowl sink with a tall faucet and pull-down sprayer. The sink sits on the right side of the island and the left side is empty countertop space. If you need more countertop space, the trailer comes with sink covers so that you can use the top of the sink as countertop space.

Below the island are several cabinets and pull-out drawers for storage. There is additional countertop space adjacent to the island. This “L” shaped area is long and spacious with storage cabinets above and below.

The kitchen is fully equipped with residential sized, stainless steel appliances including a refrigerator, stove, oven, and microwave. The refrigerator, stove, pantry, and entertainment area sit on one of the slide-outs.

Beside the refrigerator is the stove/oven/microwave as well as additional countertop space. This countertop area is a wonderful feature because most destination trailers lack this space. There is also a full sized floor to ceiling pantry next to the countertop space to give your kitchen good flow when cooking, truly another unique feature of this trailer.

Finally, comes the entertainment area which includes a large TV and a fireplace next to the pantry area. Next to the entertainment area is the front wall of the trailer. This area is another slide-out where a two-person sofa sits. On either side of the sofa are two small, narrow end tables. This sofa converts to a pull-out bed large enough for two people to sleep comfortably.

There is a second sofa located on the wall from across the entertainment area. This theater sofa reclines and has cupholders. It sits on the third slide-out of this room. Beside the theater sofa is a four-person dining area.

Down the hallway, you will first find the bathroom. This bathroom has a great layout. There is a separate toilet, vanity, and shower. The shower is small with no tub but it’s located in a corner of the bathroom creating more space for the tiny bathroom. There is also a floor to ceiling linen closet located in the bathroom, another great feature of this trailer.

Past the bathroom is a short staircase leading to the loft that is located above the master bedroom. There are two twin mattresses and additional cabinets in the loft. As you walk back down the stairs, you will come across the back of the trailer. This area houses the master bedroom. The king-sized bed sits on the fourth and final slide-out creating a spacious room. The king bed lifts up to reveal additional storage underneath. There are several built-in drawers along the walls of the bedroom with a large closet for clothes. This is also another closet just for a washer and dryer.

One thing is for sure, this destination trailer does not lack storage space. It is beautifully designed to house eight people and their belongings comfortably. See the additional specs below.

Coachman Catalina 39 RLTS

The Coachman Catalina 39 RTLS is the perfect destination travel trailer for a couple or a small family. This trailer has a different interior layout and less sleeping options than some of its competitors. However, it does have wonderful features that set it apart from others.

Let’s look at the interior. As you walk into the main entrance, you will pass through the sliding glass door. This entry opens to the living room and kitchen which is located at the back of the trailer. Two slide-outs expand this area, providing enough room to move around comfortably. You will first notice the long center island. This island is long enough for two bar stools to sit easily on each end. The island hosts a double bowl, deep sink with a tall, residential-sized faucet and pull-down sprayer. The sink comes with covers in case you need additional countertop space.

Across from the island is the dining table surround by a booth but could be upgraded to a table with four chairs. Behind the island is a slide-out wall that has a residential size refrigerator, three burner stove-top, oven, microwave, countertop space, and plenty of cabinets and drawers for storage. There is also a floor to ceiling pantry that divides the kitchen from the entertainment area.

The living room comes standard with a large flat-screen TV and gas fireplace. Around the TV and fireplace are additional cabinets for storage. The TV sits on a swing bracket allowing you to move the TV around. Across from the entertainment center is the large sofa that can turn into a double-sized bed. This sofa sits on the other slide-out in this area.

On the rear wall of the trailer, sits two reclining chairs. These chairs are perfect for watching TV or having a conversation with the cook. In between the two chairs is an end table, great for drinks and magazines. Other features in this area are the ceiling fan, wood-like floors, and plenty of storage surrounding the base of the ceiling.

As you walk down the hallway, you will come across the bathroom. The bathroom has a separate vanity, toilet, and shower. The shower is large for a trailer of this size and comes with a skylight above. There are also two medicine cabinets in the bathroom, great for his and her storage because one is large enough for towels.

As you pass the bathroom, you will walk into the master bedroom. The master bedroom does have a privacy door and its own door leading outside. 

The king-sized bed sits on the final slide-out of this trailer. The slide-out does help create space in the bedroom but it is still a smaller bedroom than some of its competitors. However, it doesn’t lack storage. There are several cabinets lining the walls of the bedroom. Also, if you lift the mattress there are storage cabinets below the bed.

There is also one floor to ceiling cabinet made to house a washer and dryer. The bedroom sits at the front of the trailer where there is a large bay window. This large window brings in so much natural light. There is also a curve to the front of the trailer. Coachmen used this unique curve to their advantage, they added a window seat with additional storage below.

This trailer may sleep fewer people than our other favorites, but it doesn’t disappoint.

Palomino Puma 39DBT

The Palomino Puma 39DBT is a destination travel trailer with two separate bedrooms and bathrooms. This travel trailer can sleep up to seven people comfortably, perfect for a larger family. The bedrooms are located on either end of the trailer. The master bedroom is located at the rear of the trailer.

The master bedroom comes with a private bathroom. As you walk into the master bedroom you will see a queen-sized bed that sits on a slide-out. Across from the bed is a spacious vanity with pull-out drawers and a wardrobe. There is a privacy door that opens to the master bathroom. This bathroom is very tiny but comes equipped with a tub/shower, separate toilet and sink with vanity. There is also a narrow, floor to ceiling linen closet in the bathroom, great for storing towels.

At the opposite end of the trailer is another bedroom. There is a privacy door for this bedroom, as well, but it does not come with a private bathroom. This bedroom comes with a king-sized bed that sits on the second slide-out.

There is a dresser and a large closet in this bedroom, as well as a door that leads to the outside, this is one of two entries into the travel trailer. This door comes with a hard door and a screen door, just in case you want to only use the screen door to get fresh air into the room. Finally, this bedroom comes with a closet meant to be used for a standup washer and dryer.

Just outside the bedroom door is a second bathroom . This bathroom is a bit larger than the master’s bathroom. This bathroom has a tub/shower, separate toilet and vanity, and a larger linen closet. Across from the bathroom is the main entrance into the trailer which is a large sliding glass door.

The center of the trailer hosts a spacious kitchen and living room. As you enter this area you will see two opposing walls. On one wall sits the dinette and sofa on the third and final slide-out. The dinette consists of a standalone dining table and four chairs. This three-person sofa is also a jack-knife sofa that can fold out into a double-sized bed.

Across from dinette and sofa is an “L” shaped kitchen. The kitchen comes equipped with residential-sized appliances including a refrigerator/freezer, three-burner stovetop, oven, microwave, and a deep sink with a tall faucet and pull-down sprayer. There is also a floor to ceiling pantry and plenty of additional storage drawers and cabinets throughout the kitchen.

This destination travel trailer is unique in the fact it has two separate bedrooms and bathrooms. This is a great choice if your family wants that extra privacy.

Gulf Stream Conquest Lodge 408TBS

The Gulf Stream Conquest Lodge 408TBS is a great destination travel trailer for a family of six. This trailer has two separate bedrooms, one full bathroom, and a half bath.

One feature that sets this trailer apart from others is that one bedroom comes with a set of bunk beds. This is a wonderful feature for children. The front of the trailer houses the bedroom with the bunk beds. The bunk beds sit on one slide-out creating a larger space in this bedroom. When the bunk beds are not in use, the bottom bunk can turn into a couch. The top bunk can retract up in order to be out of the way.

There is also a half bathroom in this room. The bathroom is small but functional. It consists of a vanity with a sink, toilet, and a small linen closet. The remaining space in the room consists of an entertainment area with a TV and drawers for storage and a small seating area in the corner of the bedroom.

The opposite end of the trailer is the master suite. The master suite comes with a king-sized bed that sits on the second slide-out of the trailer. There is a vanity and entertainment center across from the bed and a floor to ceiling closet for hanging clothes. There is also an entry to the outside from the master bedroom.

One unique feature is the bathroom as it is inside the master bedroom but is split up. The toilet is separate from the rest of the bathroom. The toilet is in its own room with a privacy door. The shower and vanity with sink are across from the toilet room but these items are not in an enclosed private room. The shower and sink are open to the rest of the bedroom. This shower is in a corner of the room and is very large for a travel trailer of this size. It is large enough for two people to fit inside.

The center of the trailer has a spacious kitchen and living room. As you walk through the main entrance of the trailer, you will notice you are walking through a large sliding glass door. One unique feature to these sliding glass doors is that they are in the center of the trailer allowing a lot of light in the kitchen and living room.

Most of Gulf Stream’s competitors have their sliding glass doors placed in the hallway only allowing light in the hallway. After entering the trailer, you will see an “L” shaped kitchen fully equipped with residential-sized appliances, including a large, deep sink, stove, oven, microwave, and refrigerator.  One unique feature to this kitchen is the large four-burner stove, most competing destination trailers only come with a three-burner stove.

The kitchen has several cabinets for storage. Across from the kitchen is a floor to ceiling pantry, dining table with bench seating, and a sleeper sofa. This area sits on the third and final slide-out of the trailer. Adjacent to the sofa is an entertainment area, perfect for a TV. One feature you will notice are the wood-like floors throughout the trailer. These beautiful floors continue into both bedrooms. The only place there is carpet is a small area around the master bed.

When you look for missing parts, do not expect the dealer to be the go-to option to replace them. The dealer is usually far more expensive than normal retail outlets when it comes to missing doors and other parts. The dealer is the last hope option when all else fails.

There are several options you can go to when you want to make your own 3 seasons patio door for your toy hauler. Home improvements stores are one, building supplies are another, and retail metal outlets would be a third. The criteria for your search would be to get high-quality materials.

Toy Hauler 3 Season Patio Door For Sale

The problem with buying retail is that you never know if you are going to get a good deal or not. We found one outlet that was charging $1,000 for the doors they have in stock. Whether those doors will fit the dimensions in your toy hauler remains to be seen.

There are other doors you can buy that are a lot cheaper but they look like they are screens only and roll down from the top of the RV. The prices for these doors range between 4200 and $500 approx.

Of course, the price of these doors will depend on what style and materials you want to use. The cheaper ones mentioned above are very simple in design and do not seem to come with a metal frame.

The more expensive model comes with a nice metal frame and includes a single screen door to enter or exit your garage area. That door comes from Keystone Classifieds, the cheaper one from e-trailer and there was only one model and there was only one listed on Amazon for under $200.

If you are not a handyman, and there is no shame in not being one, you can just do a local search to find a door company that can customize a 3 seasons patio door for your toy hauler. This will be a little bit more expensive but you know it will fit the dimensions of your RV.

That is something you have to consider when shopping generically. The store may have 3 seasons patio doors but they may not be at the dimensions you need. You do take some chances when shopping retail. It is possible that they can order in but you never know if those doors will fit properly or not.

The wrong one could be sent. Then your search continues.

Toy Hauler Rear Glass Door

There are a lot of good designs different toy hauler owners have bought and installed. The difficulty when it comes to your turn is to find someone who makes the type of door you want. There are a lot of outlets out there that sell doors, they just do not happen to sell patio doors.

This situation makes it tough and time-consuming to find someone who does make good glass patio doors. Pelland Enterprises makes and sells a lot of RV parts, etc. But we did not find patio doors listed in their catalog. We did not see glass patio doors either.

One owner ordered his door through his dealer and all they needed was his VIN to order the door. It cost the guy over $1500 and we are not sure if that was for a glass door or not.

To tell you the truth, you may have to go to a glass business to see if they can fabricate a glass patio door for you. If they can’t do the metal frame, you may have to go to a metal fabricator to get the frame built.

Glass doors are fragile and it will take special skill in getting the glass made, installed, and secured. Talking to local shops will give you an idea of the cost. Make sure to bring the dimensions and a rough sketch of what you want so these companies can improve on the design, tell you what works and what doesn’t, as well as quote you an accurate price.

DIY Toy Hauler 3 Seasons Door

This is an interesting project to take on. The cost and time involved will be determined by the design and materials you want to use. One of the issues you will have to face would be the amount of space the door you build takes up.

When your garage is only 10 feet in length, and the door frame is 6 inches, you may find it to be a very tight fit when you put your toys back inside the garage. Then you have to be careful when your toy hauler hits some bumps. You do not want the patio door breaking because someone forgot to secure the toys securely enough.

Once you get the dimensions and figure out how much space you can afford to lose, you have an unlimited number of design and material options to work with. The key will be shopping at the right businesses or retail outlets to get your supplies and other materials.

You will save money, hopefully, when you do it yourself but you have to make sure you have the assembly skills to get the job done right. Bi-fold doors look great and work well when the patio and garage are empty. They may not be so good when the garage is full.

Slide-down doors save on space but they need to be constructed well to make them work the way you would want. This is a project you have to think through and see what materials you want to use.

Lippert 3 Season Door For Sale

We searched the Lippert website and it seems that they only offer one style of door. According to the image, it looks like a glass and metal door that is bifold in design. The good news is that Lippert may provide warranty protection for more than just the handles and hinges.

In doing a further search of the website, there does not seem to be a wide selection of doors you can use for the garage area. The results page said to contact the company and talk with them.

According to one owner, these doors are very hard to find. he got an extra door when the one factory-installed option was damaged. It took him about 2 months to sell the extra door.

It may be difficult dealing with Lippert as their website often has 404 error messages popping up. Then if you buy the door from this company, the hard panels are sold separately. They are not included in the purchase.

It will be best to either call Lippert directly or talk to your dealer. They may be able to get these doors much easier than you can. They will need your VIN to place the order and get the right size. Those extra panels only attach to the patio door with Velcro.

Toy Hauler Patio Door Kit

You can find these at different RV parts and accessory stores. E-trailer seems to offer at least one style and it is from Lippert. The cost of the kit from this outlet is over $2200. But the door is one big screen.

Most kits that we came across were for turning your ramp into a patio. There are plenty of these kits available. Someone is selling a kit for the XLR boost 27 qb RV XLRboost27QB Forest River and the total cost to make your own will be $400.

Forest River seems to sell these doors but they want over $1500 for them. Not sure if Forest River’s product is a kit though. We will link to that video as the people who viewed have altered their plans for this project after seeing what that guy did. Here is the video:

Finding kits may be difficult. Not many came up in our search and you may have a difficult time finding one as well. It may be best to just do it yourself and save.

Some Final Words

People like the concept of patio doors on their toy hauler . It lets them enjoy the outdoors without losing any air conditioning or heating. These are nice projects to do and unless you can find a door for sale by the owner, you may have a difficult time in finding one ready to be installed.

Buying factory direct or through a dealer is going to be expensive. Doing it yourself is one way to save as well as get some exercise. They are good additions to a toy hauler.

What’s the Best Way to Transport a Sliding Glass Door?

The best way to transport a sliding glass door is in a well-cushioned, safe, upright position. While it sounds counterintuitive, the safest way to move large glass sheets or structures with large glass panes is in this position. 

You’ll need to fasten the glass door securely in position and ensure the supporting structure is rigid enough.

You can pad the edges of the frame that will lean against the supporting structure with styrofoam (polystyrene), packaging foam sheets, or cardboard. This is to absorb any impact shock while on the move and prevent the glass from breaking.

While the glass door should stand upright, you want to ensure the supporting frame isn’t too tall to stand in a stable position.

What Type of Car Do I Need to Transport a Sliding Glass Door?

The best vehicle to use for transporting a sliding glass door is a truck with a wide and long enough bed.
