How much prize money did Rory McIlroy get for winning the 2023 Race to Dubai?

The race to dubai is a year-long golf competition that aims to determine the top player of the european tour, with the final tournament played in january..

Svetozar Pavlović

A player’s performance, world ranking, and position on the Race to Dubai leaderboard are calculated based on the money they earn during the year. The European Tour offers substantial prize funds to attract the leading golfers at their tournaments.

Rory McIlroy holds the record for the most Race to Dubai prize money won in a single season since the competition launched in 2009. He earned over €7.1 million in 2014, the year he won The Open, the US PGA Championship, and two other European Tour titles.

For the start of the 2017 Race to Dubai, a new series of events was created in partnership with the European Tour’s long-standing partner, Rolex. The Rolex Series comprises seven tournaments with prize funds starting at $7 million .

The Rolex Series includes crucial events like the Turkish Airlines and Nedbank Challenge and other events like the BMW PGA Championship , the Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open , the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open , and the Italian Open . The series concludes with the DP World Tour Championship , where a prize of $8 million will be offered.

At the end of the World Tour Championship, a bonus pool of $5 million is split between the top ten players in the Race to Dubai standings . However, this bonus pool is not included in the official European Tour money and does not affect the final rankings.

Rory McIlroy’s prize money for winning the 2023 Race to Dubai

Rory McIlroy won at the 2023 Hero Dubai Desert Classic at the beginning of the year , beating his rival Patrick Reed by a single stroke in a thrilling finish at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai.

In addition to the prize money, the Irish golfer earned approximately 25.9 Official World Golf Ranking points and 1,335 DP World Tour points . As a result of his win, McIlroy also received a two-plus season exemption on the European Tour.

At the end of the DP Tour season, the event pockets a cool $3,000,000 before any bonus payments from the Race to Dubai standings .

Frittelli wins Bahrain Championship for first victory on European tour since 2017

RIFFA, Bahrain (AP) — South African golfer Dylan Frittelli won his first European tour event in more than six years after making three birdies in his last six holes for a two-stroke victory at the Bahrain Championship on Sunday.

Frittelli started the final round leading by two but was out of first place after playing the first 12 holes in 2-over par. He bounced back with back-to-back birdies on the par 5s at Nos. 13 and 14 and rolled in a 40-footer for birdie at No. 16 to regain his two-stroke advantage.

Frittelli parred the last two holes for a 1-under 71 and finished on 13 under overall for his first win since the Mauritius Open in December 2017. His only other win on the European tour came that year, at the Lyoness Open six months earlier, though he has won since on the PGA Tour at the John Deere Classic in 2019.

That was his rookie season on the PGA Tour but he struggled there in 2023, missing the cut or withdrawing from 23 of his 27 starts and losing his full playing privileges.

“Last year there were a couple of spots where I felt like giving the game up, to be honest," said Frittelli, who has fallen to No. 434 in the world rankings. “I was looking for something else.

"I found some resolve at the end of last year, got some good work from my physio and my coaches and trainers, and glad I persevered.”

Frittelli said he felt under pressure throughout his final round and was only comfortable when standing over a 12-footer for birdie at the last, holding a two-shot lead.

“I was swinging it great all week and then all of a sudden I couldn't hit it on the planet in the Sunday round. Glad I managed to have the resolve,” he said.

Jesper Svensson of Sweden (70) and Zander Lombard of South Africa (68) were tied for second place. With Ockie Strydom in a two-way tie for fourth a further two strokes back, there were three South Africans in the top five.

The Bahrain Championship is a new tournament on the European tour schedule and the fourth of five straight weeks to start 2024 in the Middle East. The tour was last in Bahrain for the debut of the now-defunct Volvo Tournament of Champions in 2011.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s proposed return to boardroom ‘incredibly positive’ for PGA Tour

  • New chief executive of European Tour group welcomes move
  • McIlroy motivated by desire to end split in elite men’s golf

The newly installed chief executive of the European Tour group, Guy Kinnings, has urged the PGA Tour to seize the opportunity provided by Rory McIlroy’s willingness to return to the boardroom to help heal divisions in the game.

The Guardian revealed on Monday that McIlroy will assume roles on the PGA Tour’s policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board, subject to a vote on Wednesday. McIlroy is motivated by a strong desire to end the current split in elite men’s golf, where the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour are essentially operating independently of each other.

“I would welcome it wholeheartedly,” said Kinnings, who succeeded Keith Pelley this month, of a McIlroy return to a position of power. “It would be an incredibly positive move for the PGA Tour to take but it would be great for everyone.”

Golf’s key constituent parts now involve various tours and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV. McIlroy enjoys positive relations with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head of the PIF.

“He takes an interest in so many aspects of the sport,” Kinnings added. “I have known him for a very long time and he is so thoughtful. You think you know what is going on in the game and then you listen to Rory and say: ‘Wow, he has put that so well.’

“You want to have people who are ready to apply that kind of knowledge, experience and thinking. He is very well connected with people at the PGA Tour , the DP World Tour – we rely on him hugely – and also the PIF. He is the right person with those connections [and] would be a huge asset.”

Kinnings is adamant that a “united, global” route is necessary for the sport. “I see this as an amazing opportunity,” he added. “We truly have that, with the right people and voices to help shape it. Tiger [Woods] is involved, I am delighted Rory is looking at this. These are the people who should be helping to shape the game they have given so much to.

“I think it needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed quickly. You need the right people round the table, giving it thought because this is complicated.”

McIlroy would become the only European voice on these PGA Tour committees, which itself is notable. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have a strategic alliance but there has been general concern about European golf being left behind, with focus on the US. “I was always delighted to have European representation,” said Kinnings. “I think it is far better to have a global view and Rory truly has that.

“It is such an important time and he is passionate about reaching this solution that we all agree is in the best interests of the sport globally. So I think he would be so valuable, so constructive. Personally and on behalf of this tour, I would be delighted if he was back playing a very significant role in the important discussions that are ongoing.”

Jon Rahm and other LIV golfers can play for Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup … with conditions

1707645380

Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm worried they might not be able to play for Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup after joining LIV Golf, but since they've also kept their DP World Tour membership, there is a path forward for them.

Maddie Meyer/PGA of America

LONDON — Blame Rory McIlroy. In the immediate aftermath of two-time major champion Jon Rahm’s decision to join the LIV Golf League, the Northern Irishman wasted no time in expressing his fear that the Spaniard would therefore miss out on a fourth Ryder Cup start for Europe in 2025.

“The European Tour is going to have to rewrite the rules for Ryder Cup eligibility," McIlroy lamented in December. "There's absolutely no question about that.”

Well, it turns out the Old World circuit doesn’t have to do anything of the sort. As things stand, the regulations for Ryder Cup eligibility provide a possible pathway into the team that competes on the road at Bethpage Black for Rahm and any other European player currently plying his trade on the LIV Golf League.

“If we look at the eligibility criteria for 2023, I think there has been a slight misconception,” said Guy Kinnings, the newly minted DP World Tour chief executive, when sitting down for an interview on Thursday. “The reality is that, under the current system, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place, he is eligible.”

A closer look at those directives shows that, every time a DP World Tour member like Rahm or Englishman Tyrrell Hatton plays in a LIV event without obtaining a release from Kinnings, he is subject to sanctions. While each breach is taken on “a case-by-case basis,” that typically means a suspension from the DP World Tour and an undisclosed financial penalty.

“If you don’t get a release there are sanctions, so a player must accept those sanctions,” Kinnings said. “And if he accepts the penalties, there is no reason why a player who has taken LIV membership and maintained his DP World Tour membership could not a) qualify or b) be available for Ryder Cup selection.

“It requires a player to work within the rules, but the truth is that those rules have been looked and tested. Everything is done in a fair, reasonable and proportionate way. So there is no reason why anything needs to change. It is wrong to think Jon Rahm has written himself out of the Ryder Cup. People instantly thought we would have to change the rules. But actually we don’t. If Jon follows the procedures in place, there is no reason why he would not be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup.”

More From Golf DIgest

european tour golf preisgeld

And, as it turns out, Rahm is carefully following those rules. As Kinnings confirmed, the two-time major champion has asked for a release every time he plays in a LIV event, including this week in order to tee-up in Adelaide, Australia. Those requests have all been refused, making Rahm liable for the aforementioned sanctions.

“Jon will likely have to serve a suspension,” Kinnings explained. “And if he does that, he will be eligible to play in the next Ryder Cup. He doesn’t actually have to enter a subsequent DP World Tour event to serve that suspension. He would be suspended from an event, even if he hasn’t entered. To be eligible for the Ryder Cup, a player must play in a minimum of four DP World Tour events. Any player will still be able to do that, even if he serves any and all suspensions levied. There are enough weeks in the year to do that. That’s not a loophole. Those are the rules we have always had.”

Kinnings went on to defend that situation—what many will see as something of a convenient loophole, despite Kinnings insistent to the contrary—citing the legally binding ruling of Sports Resolutions . (Ian Poulter and two other players had appealed when they were denied a release to play in the first LIV Golf event in London in July 2022. More players subsequently had joined the appeal). In April 2023 the arbitration group ruled in favor of the DP World Tour, upholding the tour’s conflicting tournament release regulation and its ability to sanction members who breached it.

“Our members have had to pay for legal fees,” Kinnings said. “And our process has been vindicated. So we are not going to change anything. This is not new news. Not all of the European LIV players resigned from the DP World Tour. (European captain) Luke Donald analyzed every player who was eligible for the last Ryder Cup. And had certain players performed well enough—as Brooks Koepka did for the Americans—then they could have been in the Ryder Cup team [in Rome]. As it is, they didn’t. Bottom line? We are not about to change rules we went to court to defend. They are what they are. The level of fines has not changed. Rules are rules. So we were not tempted to change when Jon went to LIV.”

So it is that Rahm and Hatton still can play their way on Donald’s 2025 team since they retain their DP World Tour membership (Sergio Garcia resigned his membership and while has talked about trying to regain it, does not appear to have taken the steps to do so in time to be eligible for 2025.) All of which will surely come as a huge relief to McIlroy and anyone else concerned about the level of competitiveness we are likely to see at Bethpage Black on Long Island when the Ryder Cup reconvenes in September next year.

PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund Have Yet to Meet Together

According to a report, the new CEO of the DP World Tour wants an agreement to move quickly, and he also believes European LIV golfers should be able to play in the Ryder Cup.

  • Author: Bob Harig

Nearly a year after the shocking “framework agreement’’ was announced between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, all of the parties have yet to formally meet together.

That is according to Guy Kinnings, the new CEO of the DP World Tour, who officially took over from Keith Pelley this month.

Kinnings, in a media session with a small group UK and Irish golf writers in London, discussed his hopes for an agreement and also made clear that the European Ryder Cup rules do not need to be changed for players such as Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton to be part of the team next year at Bethpage Black.

“From my perspective, all I want to do is make sure we as quickly as possible get the right people around a table to talk about what can a future look like,’’ Kinnnings said in a report from the Scotsman newspaper . “I don’t expect them to go in knowing all the answers. There’s lots of things have to get worked at. What does the product look like, probably from 2026 and beyond? What’s the pathway? What does it mean for things?

“But, until you get into the room with the right people with the right intent to try and find a solution, you are never going to work out a deal and, at the end of the day, this is what is needed right now as quickly as we can. We’ve all seen—even with a great Masters—that TV figures are down. If we listen to the fans, there’s something that needs to get fixed and I see it as a huge opportunity because, if you can unite and go global, that’s exactly what we are all about.’’

The framework agreement was supposed to bring the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and PIF—which backs LIV Golf—together by the end of 2023. That deadline was missed, and since then the PGA Tour has received private equity from a U.S. based consortium of investors called Strategic Sports Group that can be as much as $3 billion.

A plan has been unveiled for PGA Tour players to receive equity in the new PGA Tour Enterprises, a for-profit company. Kinnings said that the PIF’s governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, wants to be part of the group of investors.

“I was talking to the guys from the Strategic Sports Group  and I said ‘listen, we’ve got to get together, we’ve got to pull it all together, we’ve got to find the product that works—it probably won’t be until 2026 but beyond there—and is good for the game, something that fans like and works for everyone.’ But, at the end of the day, it has got to be something that is appealing to them. It’s got to work for all parties and everyone is going to have to do things they don’t necessarily want to, a compromise. But that’s what you do if you strike a deal, it won’t happen until we get everyone in a room together.”

Kinnings also said that players, such as Rahm, who remain a DP World Tour member but pay fines and deal with suspensions for missing conflicting events can still be eligible for the Ryder Cup.

European LIV Players like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton remain eligible for Ryder Cup, says DP World Tour CEO

LIV Golf's Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton will be eligible for Ryder Cup if they pay fines and serve bans and play at least four DP World Tour events a season; DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings does not expect golf to be unified once again until 2026 as Framework Agreement talks continue

Friday 26 April 2024 15:29, UK

Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton remain eligible for the Ryder Cup despite their moves to LIV Golf and will not be exploiting a "loophole" if they represent Europe in the USA next year, says DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings.

Rahm and Hatton are still members of the DP World Tour and must play four events a season, as well as pay fines and serve bans following their switch to the Saudi-backed circuit without "conflicting event" releases, to be available for the 2025 Ryder Cup.

It is understood that suspensions are automatically applied to the next DP World Tour event for which the player is eligible, even if they had no intention of playing that event in the first place.

"We're not going to change anything on that basis. Rules are rules and they apply for every member. We're not in a position to be changing rules that we've had to go to court to defend."

In April 2023, an arbitration panel ruled the DP World Tour had the right to sanction players for "serious breaches" of its code of behaviour, a case sparked by 12 players appealing against fines of $100,000 and bans from the Scottish Open for playing LIV's inaugural event in 2022.

Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood resigned their memberships, while Henrik Stenson was sacked as Ryder Cup captain, to be replaced by Luke Donald.

Asked if such players were aware of how the tournament suspensions worked, Kinnings added: "I have no idea what they thought. To be perfectly honest, this isn't new news because, as you know, I had an extremely thorough Ryder Cup captain and a brilliant assistant.

Garcia

"For the last Ryder Cup they were analysing every player who was eligible and that was players on whatever Tour they were on. Had certain players played well enough, then they could have been in the Ryder Cup team. As it is, they didn't."

Kinnings: I don't expect golf unity until 2026

Kinnings also said he does not expect golf to become unified until 2026 as talks continue between the DP World Tour, PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) - the funders of LIV Golf - about a framework agreement.

He added: "While I'm all for looking forward rather than looking back, we all know that after the framework agreement was announced, there wasn't a lot of progress or obvious progress.

"Has there been a big negotiation where all the parties have sat around and talked about the future product? I don't think that meeting's happened yet.

european tour golf preisgeld

"I can't explain in detail or fix what's gone before, now looking forward we've just got to make sure that happens as soon as possible.

"All I know now, because I have directly been involved in it, is there's a lot of work going on in terms of looking at a working plan, so there is significantly more momentum than there was. There is an intent to get the right people in the room.

"I don't see any Tour's schedules changing in '25. If you could get a resolution now, maybe you could do some stuff towards the end of '25, but the reality is the '26 season needs to be the one where there are significant changes.

"The truth is everyone is having to do things they probably never expected to do and they've got to be flexible, they've got to be willing to compromise so there may be ways we can do things."

Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, watches his tee shot on the second hole during the third round of the Texas Open golf tournament, Saturday, April 6, 2024, in San Antonio. (AP Photo/Eric Gay)

Kinnings welcomed Rory McIlroy's likely return to the PGA Tour's policy board and believes there is merit in the Northern Irishman's vision for a 'World Tour'.

"I can see a lot of sense in what Rory said," he added. "The fans want to see the best players, playing together as often as they can as well as the majors. That's a model I can see being very appealing but it's only part of the picture.

"If we're going to find a solution we need to be thinking how you integrate team golf in some way and that's to satisfy what's been done with LIV, but also the recognition that we all love team golf and when it happens every two years in the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup it's brilliant.

"There's lots of ways of doing it. Would that be feeding in as two separate tours or a single tour? I don't know. Until we're in the negotiating room and we know what people want to get from it, you will not be able to tell.

"But finding a pathway to bring the players back, make it global, make it united, has got to be the mantra we all want to get."
