War Horse to Return for UK Tour

The National Theatre’s global smash-hit production of  War Horse , the unforgettable theatrical event based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel, will embark on a major 18-month UK Tour from 5 September 2024, touring through to 2026.

Opening at the New Wimbledon Theatre (5 – 14 September),  War Horse  will then tour to The Lowry, Salford (18 – 28 September) Mayflower Theatre, Southampton (8 – 19 October), The Marlowe, Canterbury (22 October – 2 November), Sunderland Empire (5 – 16 November), Theatre Royal Plymouth (26 November – 7 December), New Theatre Oxford (10 December 2024 – 4 January 2025), with future dates and venues to be announced. For more information and to sign-up for priority booking visit  WarHorseOnStage.com .

War Horse,  adapted by Nick Stafford and originally directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, has become the most successful play in the history of the National Theatre, winning more than 25 major awards and has been seen by over 8.3 million people worldwide.  This all-new tour is co-produced with Michael Harrison, Fiery Angel, and Playing Field.

War Horse  tells the remarkable story of a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War.  This powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness, filled with stirring music and songs, featuring ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping, charging, horses to thrilling life on stage and has inspired a generation of theatre-makers since its premiere in 2007.

Director, Tom Morris said, “ It is a huge privilege to be invited to revisit  War Horse  and to share this powerful story once more with audiences around the country.  Michael Morpurgo’s brilliant idea, to explore the crushing violence of war through the experience of a horse, makes his story as powerful and resonant today as it has ever been.   And in this time of increasing commercialism in theatre, it’s worth remembering that the production which carried War Horse to an international audience was a wild experiment, developed through workshops at the National Theatre Studio, the unique theatre laboratory where ground-breaking hits from  Coram Boy  and  London Road  to  The Witches  were devised.   It has been an enormous thrill to return there in recent months to reunite Adrian Kohler’s magnificent puppets with designer Rae Smith, composer Adrian Sutton and other members of the original cast and creative team to start the process of bringing Joey back to the stage .”

Author, Michael Morpurgo said:  “I am so delighted the National Theatre’s iconic production of  War Horse  is back!  When Covid closed the show down in 2020 in Australia in the midst of its second World Tour, many thought, and I was amongst them, that we’d never see  War Horse  on stage again.  Now it’s really happening – we will hear the music and songs, be amazed by its design and lighting, live Joey’s story again.   War Horse  is about the tragedy of war and about a horse and his boy, but it’s also so many other things – it’s about family and community, courage and loss, hope, and most importantly reconciliation.”

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

This tour of  War Horse  marks 110 years since the start of the First World War and follows the 40 th  anniversary of the publication of Michael Morpurgo’s global best-selling novel, which has now sold over 35 million copies world-wide and in 37 different languages.

Executive Director of the National Theatre, Kate Varah said:  “We are delighted that we are able to launch this major new UK tour of  War Horse .  This moving and spectacular production has captured the imagination of millions of audience members across the world since it was first performed on the Olivier stage in 2007 and we are deeply appreciative and excited, to be working with our co-producers to make this possible in the current landscape.  We look forward to connecting with our partner venues with this much-loved story, that appeals to all ages and which beautifully showcases the magic of live performance.”

Creative development for the tour is being led by Tom Morris with revival director Katie Henry, featuring reimagined designs by Rae Smith and additional music by Adrian Sutton.  Puppet design and fabrication is by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler for Handspring Puppet Company, lighting design is by Rob Casey, movement and horse choreography is by Toby Sedgwick with puppet direction by Matthew Forbes.  Animation and projection design is by Nicol Scott for 59 Productions, John Tams is songmaker and sound design is by Christopher Shutt.  Casting is by Jill Green CDG and associate designer is Will Fricker.  Casting is to be announced.

A scene from War Horse with a horse puppet

National Theatre’s War Horse to return to UK stages after five-year absence

Exclusive: Director says he is interested to see response of new audiences at a time of growing instability

The global theatrical phenomenon War Horse is returning to British stages for the first time in five years, and its director hopes audiences will gain new perspectives against the backdrop of the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts.

The National Theatre and Tom Morris are embarking on a nationwide UK tour from this September of their adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s story about a boy and his horse who experience the horrors of the first world war.

The launch will mark a revival for War Horse after the Covid pandemic abruptly shut down a production in Australia in 2020.

“The world has changed in all kinds of ways since we first made the show,” said Morris, who directed the original production in 2007. “It was a crazy experimental show which all of us who worked on it got very excited by, but I don’t think anyone anticipated how many invitations it would get to play in so many different countries when we first made it.”

War Horse has played in 14 countries and been seen by more than 8 million people worldwide. Its revival comes more than 40 years since Morpurgo’s novel was first published and on the 110-year anniversary of the first world war.

“Now obviously the war that Michael was writing about is even further in the dim annals of history but horrifyingly there is trench warfare again in Europe,” Morris said. “The world feels increasingly unstable and I’m really fascinated to see what the story feels like for new audiences.

“I don’t think a piece of theatre can change the course of history, but if you look at what it offers within our culture and the terrifying disappearance of the opportunity to reflect from most of our lives, it feels really important.”

Morpurgo was inspired to write his novel after having fireside conversations with first world war veterans in a Devon pub. From those chats, seeds were planted that grew into a global phenomenon.

The production, featuring groundbreaking puppetry , ran for seven years and was a huge money spinner for the National Theatre, bringing in £13.5m before it ended there in 2015 . It continued to find fans after the theatre run concluded, especially after it was adapted for the big screen by Steven Spielberg in 2012 .

Morpugo famously hated Spielberg’s film but he is delighted that the National Theatre will be taking the production on the road again . “Joey [the horse] out in his field in deepest Devon is thrilled, I am thrilled,” he said. “War Horse is about the ‘pity of war’ and about a horse and his boy, but it’s also so many other things – it’s about family and community, courage and loss, hope and, most importantly, reconciliation, a story of then and now.”

The executive director of the National Theatre , Kate Varah, said the themes of the production were particularly powerful at the moment when wars had created instability across much of the world.

She said: “It’s still relevant – in fact, sadly, the impact of the machinery of war on animals and humans is a powerful theme in today’s world. It’s incredibly topical but there are also themes around family, community, courage, loss – and reconciliation most importantly. All of that makes it feel like an appropriate time for it to be taken out on tour around the country.”

Morris admitted that bringing back the show, which is the most successful in the history of the National Theatre , was a risk, especially when theatres outside London have struggled to entice audiences back since the Covid crisis.

“If you were just looking to preserve the reputation of the show then you’d say ‘let’s leave it’,” he said. “But certainly Michael felt that the reason to bring it back is because there’s more to discover by bringing it back. We will find new things in it, things which open up where we are now. You may think the world was unstable and precarious in 2007 but it feels a lot more so now.”

The tour will start at the New Wimbledon theatre on 5 September before touring to the Lowry in Salford, the Mayflower theatre in Southampton, the Marlowe in Canterbury, the Sunderland Empire, Theatre Royal Plymouth and New Theatre Oxford.

The National Theatre’s globe-trotting production of  War Horse returns to London at the newly-created Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.

The World War One story of young Albert and his faithful steed Joey is back in the capital city. The play enjoyed a spectacular 9 year-stint in London’s Theatreland between 2007 and 2016, running for over 3000 performances and being nominated for 7 Olivier Awards and winning 2 (as well as 5 Tony Awards on Broadway). As a result, War Horse tickets in London are expected to be in hot demand.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved story, War Horse is set at the outbreak of the First World War. Joey, young farmer Albert’s horse, is taken from him, sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. But their bond cannot be broken by conflict alone, and despite being caught up in enemy fire, fate will take Joey on an extraordinary journey across no man’s land. Meanwhile, Albert embarks on a treacherous mission to enlist, find Joey – and bring him home.

Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, War Horse its famous for its astonishing life-sized horse puppets, which were developed by South African company Handspring Puppet Company. The show features these puppets breathing, galloping, and charging around the stage to stirring music and songs. The result is a phenomenally inventive production, taking you on a journey from the fields of rural Devon to the filthy trenches of First World War France.

War Horse has visited 11 countries around the world, including Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, South Africa and China. It has played to nearly 8 million people over the past 11 years. It returned to the National Theatre in 2018 to mark the centenary of Armistice Day, before subsequently embarking on a further UK and international tour. It is based on the best-selling 1982 novel of the same name, and was adapted for the silver screen in 2011, directed by Steven Spielberg.

War Horse is moving, imaginative and spectacular theatre at its very best. Don’t miss out on War Horse tickets: you can book yours on this page today.

War Horse masterfully adapted by Nick Stafford and initially brought to the stage by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, stands as the National Theatre’s unparalleled triumph. With over 25 prestigious awards under its belt, the play has captivated more than 8.3 million viewers across the globe.

At its heart, War Horse narrates the extraordinary tale of Albert, a young boy, and his horse, Joey, set amidst the tumultuous era of the First World War. It’s a narrative that resonates with profound emotion and boundless creativity, underscored by moving music and songs. The play is distinguished by its innovative use of puppetry, masterminded by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. Their pioneering techniques breathe life into horses on stage, making them prance, charge, and gallop in a display that has left an indelible mark on theatre practitioners since its debut in 2007.

This rendition of War Horse commemorates 110 years since the outbreak of the First World War, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Michael Morpurgo’s universally acclaimed novel. Morpurgo’s work, the foundation of this theatrical masterpiece, has sold over 35 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 37 languages, further testament to its global impact and enduring appeal.

Creative development for the tour is being led by Tom Morris with revival director Katie Henry, featuring reimagined designs by Rae Smith and additional music by Adrian Sutton. Aside from its astonishing special effects and life-sized equestrian puppetry,  War Horse is also filled with emotionally provocative music and songs that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish!

The critically acclaimed National Theatre production, which has won both Olivier Awards and Tony Awards on Broadway, played in London's West End for a total of 8 years. It eventually became an international phenomenon when it was staged in 11 countries across the globe and has now been seen by a whopping 7 million people. The numbers don't lie!

What is the  War Horse  play about?

At the dawn of the First World War, Albert's beloved horse Joey is sold to the cavalry and whisked off to France. Albert soon gets caught in the middle of bloody battles and devastating crossfire and he can't seem to forget his four-legged companion. While not yet old enough to enlist into the armed forces, Albert is led by destiny on an unforgettable quest to find and bring back Joey.

War Horse  is a touching and highly imaginative drama that will take you on an unforgettable journey through World War I. Featuring a gripping story of a boy who loves his pet horse and a fabulous cast of actors who work to bring the life-sized puppets to life,  War Horse  is absolutely unmissable!

Book your tickets to  War Horse  at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre now to make sure you gallop to secure your place at the show!  War Horse  tickets are expected to get swept away fast, so be sure to book your seats early!

London Theatre Review: War Horse at Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre

London Theatre Review: War Horse at Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre

I remember when War Horse first came to the stage twelve years ago. Eleven year old me read about it in ‘Pony’ Magazine and immediately wanted to go. Well, yesterday I finally got there. Brought back for a limited run at Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre , War Horse makes great use of the huge space. It is one of the most unique pieces of theatre I have ever seen. The horses are huge puppets manned by three people each and the effect is amazingly believable.

Stalls, Dress Circle, Upper Circle: Where Should I Sit At The Theatre?
