Tour de France 2022 Route stage 11: Albertville - Col du Granon

Tour de France 2022

Albertville and the Tour de France have been intertwined in recent years. Five out of the last seven editions did see a stage start from the town in the foothills of the Alps. Usually, the stage enters the high mountains, which is the case in 2022 as well.

The stage is set to finish at the Col du Granon. Only once before did the yellow caravan stop on the mountain in the Serre Chevalier ski area. Eduardo Chozes climbed to the stage honours, while Greg Lemond took the yellow jersey from Bernard Hinualt that day. We are talking 36 years ago here. Six stages later Greg Lemond won his first of three Grandes Boucles.

But, first things first. The first hour of racing takes place on flat roads. Then the Lacets de Montvernier is a good place to test the legs. Just 3.4 kilometres long and averaging 8.2%. Which is nothing compared to the giants ahead.

Albertville and the Tour de France may have been intertwined in recent years, the Télégraphe and Galibier are intertwined since the dawn of time. Together they comprise a 35 kilometres climb, but if you take them apart, the Télégraphe accounts for 11.9 kilometres of climbing at 7.1%, and, after a short downhill, the Galibier adds another 17.7 kilometres at 6.9% to the hardship.

The Galibier peaks out with 45 kilometres remaining. Most goes downhill to Saint-Chaffrey at the foot of the Col du Granon. Which is a steady climb in the sense that the gradients never fall below 8%. The Granon is 11.3 kilometres, features sevral double digit sectors, and averages 9.2%.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

PREVIEW | Tour de France 2024 stage 11 - Breakaway bonanza or will Pogacar and Evenepoel test Vingegaard again?

A tricky and difficult stage. The race goes into the mountains once again but on stage 11 they are short and explosive. We preview the race's main day on the Massif Central where it can be expected that the GC riders will be in action but a breakaway is likely to succeed on the day.

Into the Massif Central, the race is now heading south towards the Pyrenees. The beginning of the 211-kilometer stage is flat but the finale is rather hilly with four categorized climbs. The GC riders could have an interesting battle, but most likely we will have a breakaway contest for the triumph.

Jasper Philipsen outsprints Biniam Girmay to finally win Tour de France stage

PREVIEW | Tour de France 2024 stage 11 - Breakaway bonanza or will Pogacar and Evenepoel test Vingegaard again?

It is a transition day, well suited to a breakaway however with a flat start that certainly won't make it easy. 211 kilometers on the bike will make it a long one, with a difficult finale where the climbers and classics riders will come to the front. If the GC men find an opening, the fight could easily explode in such terrain.

The Massif Central presents treacherous roads and a different challenge to that of the high mountains, which some may want to take advantage of. The final 50 kilometers of the stage has four difficult ascents. The first of which is the Col de Neronne which is 3.9 kilometers long at 8.6%, it ends with 42.5 kilometers to go, and there is no descent before tackling the next one.

This is the Puy Mary Pas de Peyrol which is 5.3 kilometers long at 7.8%, summiting with 31 kilometers to go. But this is a very dangerous ascent as the gradients go all the way up to 16% close to the summit and the riders immediately go into a technical and steep descent directly into the base of the next climb. It's a prime location for an explosive attack.

After the descent there is the Col de Pertus which is 4.5 kilometer long at 8.2%, and in it's summit is a bonified sprint with only 14.5 kilometers to go. The peloton can completely explode on this ascent if it hasn't already, as 8 seconds at the top are not to be ignored.

After a small ascent comes the last climb of the day, the easiest of the four but not an easy one by any means - adding the fact that fatigue will be high at this point. The Col de Font de Cère is 3.4 kilometers long at 5.6% and ends with only 3 kilometers to go. It's almost a summit finish. Only a tiny descent follows and then a slight uphill sprint to the line in Le Lioran.

The Weather

PREVIEW | Tour de France 2024 stage 11 - Breakaway bonanza or will Pogacar and Evenepoel test Vingegaard again?

Relatively warm day but rain is expected. Perhaps most will fall in the morning before the start, we may see wet roads but the rain not falling. It shouldn't be too risky. There will be some wind from the west which will mean a crosswind throughout most of the day, and a relative tailwind trend for the final kilometers and climbs of the stage.

Jury & Fines Tour de France 2024 Update stage 10

The Favourites

GC Fight - In the end, regardless of what happens, this is the most important question of the day. After stage 9 we can say with certainty that both Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel are considerably annoyed with Jonas Vingegaard and his defensive racing. In the long climbs and high mountains there is no chance to surprise him, but on stages like this it is more possible. The two can become allies and I do see that happening, but still they would have to drop their rival to make it work and this is the hard part, because Vingegaard is very focused and does not let Pogacar go anywhere by himself.

In the summit of the penultimate categorized climb I wouldn't be surprised to see Evenepoel attack, perhaps at any moment that the race slows down. UAE, although not too likely, may also want to take this day where a breakaway is expected to win and try to sneak in Adam Yates, João Almeida or Juan Ayuso in the breakaway. It's a flat start so it's not easy, but if they do it and get collaboration in the front, Visma will be under pressure. No other team, including Quick-Step, is currently racing for victory in the race so we can expect to continue seeing UAE against Visma and UAE have to try and start using their numbers at some point. The rest, I don't expect to see much action, it's a day to tick off. We may see riders in the Top20 trying to get in the breakaway for sure, as this is a day where minutes can be gained and they will know that.

Prize Money Tour de France 2024 - Full guide to how €2.573.202 will be split between teams

But in the end of the day, this is a stage I expect to see going for a breakaway. No team under ordinary conditions will spend 120 kilometers working on flat roads to control a breakaway with no guarantees whatsoever of taking a stage win or time on their rivals. Besides, Pogacar and Evenepoel have already taken stage wins and Vingegaard has no interest in them. And even more, the three are evenly matched uphill virtually, so working all day may not even lead to any gain at all. So as soon as the breakaway goes, someone will only work in the peloton if there are dangerous GC riders in front - although only a few riders would make this happen, since UAE or Visma will not care about almost anyone other than their direct rivals.

But with a flat start it's close to a lottery to know who will be there. There are a few riders that will have to use the flat roads to their benefit, not only to be in front, but to get an advantage before the big climbs in order to try and fight for a win. This would include riders such as Michael Matthews, Stefan Küng, Ben Healy, Victor Campenaerts, Alex Aranburu or Jonas Abrahamsen , who can then survive the climbs with the right company. Mathieu van der Poel and Soren Kragh Andersen also have this opportunity, to bring a second consecutive win for Alpecin.

Then we have other riders that will depend fully on the climbs to make the difference. They will want to be in the break but wait for a conservative race there, and have the pressure to attack uphill early and split the groups before someone anticipates successfully. David Gaudu, Simon Yates and Stephen Williams could do very well on a day like this, but their lightweight physique can certainly take a toll between climbs.

All in all there are plenty fit contenders who are either climbers or puncheurs and are all valid options for a win. Some teams have plenty options such as EF who also have the likes of Richard Carapaz , Rui Costa, Alberto Bettiol and Neilson Powless ; or DSM who have home rider Romain Bardet who will be motivated, Warren Barguil, Frank van den Broek and Oscar Onley . The likes of Tom Pidcock , Maxim van Gils , Oier Lazkano, Kévin Vauquelin and Alexey Lutsenko are all also proven winners who can take it on the day.

Last but not least there are a few more cards we cannot leave out, who in the right circumstances can raise their arms in glory, but I would not rate as high as their rivals: Toms Skujins, Wout Poels, Jesús Herrada and Tobias Johannessen .

Tour de France

Stage 11 of the Tour de France 2022 starts in Albertville, with a mountain top finish at Col du Granon Serre Chevalier.

The really big mountains rear their heads and with them two of the Tour de France’s mightiest passes, topping out at 2,642m and 2,413m.

When is stage 11 of the Tour de France taking place?

The Tour de France stage 11 takes place on Wednesday, July 13 starting at 11:30 BST with an anticipated finish time of 15:54 BST.

How long is stage 11 of the Tour de France?

The Tour de France stage 11 will be 151.7 km long.

Tour de France stage 11: expected timings

Tour de France stage 11

Starting in Albertville, the first third of the stage runs through valleys to reach the spectacular Lacets de Montvernier, its tightly piled hairpins rising for more than 3km at a touch above 8%. After dropping back down to the floor of the Maurienne valley, the riders will continue eastwards to reach the foot of the Col du Télégraphe, which climbs consistently for 12km, the road then descending into the resort of Valloire, where the 17.7km haul to the Col du Galibier begins. The toughest sections follow the sweeping rightward turn at Plan Lachat, which is almost 2,000 metres up. The gradient averages more than 8.5% for the next 8km, where the altitude (2,642m at the summit) will also draw on physical resources.

A 30km descent follows to the foot of the final test. Tackled only once before by the Tour, the road to the Col du Granon (2,413m) is consistently and fiercely steep. Averaging 9.2% for 11.3km, there’s a 3km stretch at midway that’s above 10%. At the end of this exacting test, the candidates for the overall title will be very apparent.

Tour de France stage 11: what to expect

The contests for both the yellow and polka-dot jersey will intensify today. Riders who have already been busy bagging mountains points should feature prominently in the break. They’ll see a chance to add to their collection on the opening three climbs – the Montvernier hairpins, the Télégraphe and the Galibier, the high point of this year’s race where the first rider to the summit will receive the Henri Desgrange prize and the prize money that goes with it. They’ll be hoping to hang on to the finish, or at least to cross the line in a position that enables them to add to their total.

The GC contenders will likely wait until the Granon before they begin to duel with each other, although their numbers are likely to be shredded by the rapid tempo that one or more of the strongest teams will impose on the Galibier. There is a chance, if anyone’s brave enough, for a long-range attack on the slopes of this historic ascent, but that will depend on the strength and direction of the wind descending from this pass. It’s often head-on, which would complicate any solo effort.

Tour de France stage 11: riders to watch

It’s hard to see past two-time defending champion Tadej Pogačar when considering the likely winner of this vital stage. His UAE Team Emirates support crew looks stronger each year, as does the Slovenian rider. He won back-to-back summit finishes at the tail end of last year’s race and will, assuming he’s in good shape, be the rider to beat on the Granon. His compatriot Primož Roglič still looks the most likely to equal or even better him, and it will be interesting to see how his partnership with Jumbo-Visma team-mate and 2021 Tour runner-up Jonas Vingegaard plays out. Can they outwit and overpower Pogačar between them?

All eyes on the glorious Galibier

While most climbs, towns and cities in France count down the days until they can once again host the Tour de France, it’s the Tour itself that counts down the days until it can go back to the Col du Galibier.

This mythical mountain that climbs to 2,642 metres above sea level just north of the city of Briançon is such an integral part of the race that it’s rare for it not to appear on the parcours. This year it’s climbed twice in two days. Its first appearance was on 10 July, 1911 when only three riders were able to pedal their singlespeed bikes to its summit on gravel roads and in doing so instilling the climb into not only the history of the Tour but the very fabric of cycling.

The monument to Henri Desgrange, the L’Auto journalist who first dreamt up the idea of the Tour, sits near the summit, and the Souvenir Henri Desgrange is given to the first rider over the top each year.

For newcomers to the sport if you think you’ve heard the name before, you probably have. Galibier is also a cycling clothing company, PR firm, capital management company, Bugatti supercar and a management consultancy in Brisbane, Australia

Tour de France 2023 stage 11 LIVE: Result and reaction as Jasper Philipsen wins again

Jasper philipsen took his fourth stage win of this year’s tour de france with another imperious sprint victory, article bookmarked.

Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile

Stage 11 of the 2023 Tour de France is a final opportunity for the sprinters before the road tilts up into the hills and mountains of the Alps.

The day begins in the university city of Clermont-Ferrand before the riders wind north and then east to Moulins, a small town on the Allier river. There is still some climbing to be done including three category-four hills along the route, but any breakaway is likely to be reeled by those teams with dedicated sprinters eyeing their only opportunity for a stage win between the two rest days.

Jasper Philipsen will be favourite here again having already collected all three victories on flat stages in this Tour. Caleb Ewan, Phil Bauhaus, Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen will all try to challenge if they can find the form and positioning to do so, and then there is Wout van Aert , the Jumbo-Visma superstar trying desperately to clinch a stage, and end his run of near misses.

Follow the stage 11 route map, standings and latest updates below:

Tour de France stage 11

Here’s how Jasper Philipsen continued his sprint dominance in Moulins today

Tour de France stage 11 - Philipsen reflects on stage win

Jasper Philipsen has been speaking to the media straight after today’s victory.

“It has been an incredible Tour so far. I can’t believe how good it’s going. Super happy with my shape so far.

On victory without Mathieu van der Poel leadout: “I can also win without him! He makes it easy though, so I had to find my wheel a little bit today. Finding the space, it was technical and dangerous for crashing. I was happy to find a good wheel with Groenewegen.

“There are maybe three more sprint opportunities. I’m so happy so far to take four stages. Hopefully looking towards Paris and winning the famous green jersey. I have a good gap [in the green jersey competition] so it gives me a bit of comfort going into the Alps.”

Jasper Philipsen got some (undeserved) flak after his previous win for his ‘elbows out’ style. Nothing wrong with this one today - clean as a whistle, he was just too fast.

map stage 11 tour france

Brilliant riding by Philipsen, he sat on Groenewegen’s wheel and picked his moment to stream past. Groenewegen ends up in second, Bauhaus third with Coquard fourth.

It’s four sprint wins from four by Philipsen - he’s undoubtedly the quickest man at this year’s Tour. The Alpecin-Deceuninck man didn’t even need Van der Poel’s lead-out.

Tour de France stage 11 - JASPER PHILIPSEN WINS

Finish: Groenewegen goes early, tries to drag race it to the finish and he looks like he might get there but in the final 100m Philipsen, who was sitting on his wheel powers past!

JASPER PHILIPSEN WINS AGAIN!

1km to go: Van Aert and Ewan right near the front, Philpsen on Ewan’s wheel. I think Dylan Groenewegen is winding up for a big kick. Final kilometre

2km to go: These roundabouts are causing mayhem and now we’re over a bridge and round a tough right-hand turn. Riders are losing their teammates - everyone is strung out.

2.5km to go: Pogacar and Vingeagaard safely near the front in case there’s a crash. Good riding from the heads of state.

3.3km to go: That roundabout has strung out the peloton slightly. The sprinters have a bit more room at the front. Veteran Peter Sagan has popped up near the front.

5km to go: We hit the first roundabout and there are a couple more to come. Everyone round safely. Soudal-Quickstep, Lotto-Dstny, Jumbo-Visma all lurking near the front.
