Are you visiting Adelaide, have access to a car, but want to explore a little further? Here are some great self-drive day trips from Adelaide.

As a country girl living in the city, I love nothing more than getting in the car and exploring the areas slightly further afield. Adelaide has so many great areas just an hour or two away from the city that a perfect for a day trip to explore.

You can head to the wine regions, explore small towns or hit the beaches. Here are some of my favourite suggestions for your own self-drive day trip from Adelaide.

TL;DR? Here's the outline

Barossa Valley

Mclaren vale, adelaide hills, victor harbor, strathalbyn, monarto safari park, southern beaches, clare valley, tailem bend.

Two men and two women standing at a bench with glasses of red wine in their hands. On the bench is a variety of wine bottles and more wine glasses. Another man is on the other side of the bench showing them the wine in his glass.

Getting in the car and heading off to the Barossa Valley is always top of my list, mostly because of where I live in the city – it’s very easy to access. It’s simple from the city centre too. Get onto the South Road Expressway, and just keep driving north.

In about 45-60 minutes you will be in the heart of the Barossa, and can spend the day exploring.

You will likely want to stop into a cellar door or two, and with over 80 in the area, there are plenty to choose from. You can’t go wrong with any of them, but some of my favourites are Pindarie, Seppeltsfield and Yalumba.

Of course wine tasting is popular here, but there are plenty of other things to do here that don’t include wine. I recommend a visit to the Whispering Wall if you haven’t been before, or some kayaking on the Barossa Reservoir.

A large black and white cube-like building with red umbrellas on top of it. It sits amongst grape vines with autumn leaves.

Instead of going north to the Barossa, you can instead drive south and visit another wine region, McLaren Vale .

Start your adventure at the d’Arenberg Cube, a unique building that looks like a puzzle piece. It’s a winery where you can taste some great local wines. It’s also a gallery and has two restaurants, and is my pick for a McLaren Vale must!

As you drive through McLaren Vale, you’ll see plenty of beautiful vineyards. You can stop at a few for wine tasting – the region is especially known for its delicious Shiraz.

Apart from wine, there are art galleries around for a bit of culture. In the town’s main street, you’ll find lovely cafes and shops, perfect for a midday break and a bite to eat.

If you fancy a bit of nature, head to Port Willunga. The beach there is stunning, with the old jetty ruins adding a touch of history.

McLaren Vale offers a mix of good wine, art, and beautiful landscapes, making it a fantastic and varied day trip.

Looking at the Mount Lofty lighthouse at sunrise

Heading out on a self-drive day trip to the Adelaide Hills is a splendid way to discover the charms of this region near Adelaide.

Your first stop could be Mount Lofty Summit, which offers breathtaking views of Adelaide’s skyline – it’s a great spot for some photos!

Then, drive down to the town of Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Stroll along its main street, lined with quaint shops and traditional German eateries – it’s like stepping into a little piece of Europe.

Along the way, make sure to visit one of the local wineries. The Adelaide Hills are known for their excellent cool-climate wines, and a wine-tasting session is a must-do. Enjoy the serene vineyard views as you sip on some exquisite wines.

My favourite Adelaide Hills winery is Hahndorf Hill. They do a fabulous chocolate and wine tasting. Another option is The Lane or Bird in Hand – both have lovely cellar doors.

If you’re an animal lover or traveling with kids, consider a detour to Cleland Wildlife Park. It’s a fantastic place to interact with native Australian animals in a natural setting. You can feed kangaroos, cuddle a koala, and see a range of other wildlife.

This day trip combines scenic views, cultural experiences, delicious wines, and wildlife encounters, offering a delightful taste of what the Adelaide Hills have to offer.

A historic steam train puffing along tracks near the beach

Just an hour’s drive from Adelaide, the journey to Victor Harbor takes you through picturesque landscapes before arriving at this lovely seaside town.

Victor Harbor is famous for its historic horse-drawn tram which takes you over a causeway to Granite Island. The island is a great spot for a leisurely walk with chances to spot local wildlife and enjoy stunning sea views.

Back in town, you can explore the bustling main street with its shops and cafes, perfect for grabbing a bite or a coffee. For nature enthusiasts, visiting the South Australian Whale Centre is a must, especially during whale-watching season.

Jump on the Cockle Train for a nostalgic steamtrain ride along the coast to Goolwa and back.

If you’re up for more adventure, consider taking a scenic coastal walk or visiting nearby Encounter Bay for its beautiful beaches.

An early morning view through reeds to the lake. There are wooden sailboats scattered around

Speaking of Goolwa, it is found at the mouth of the mighty Murray River and makes for another great day trip.

Goolwa has a laid-back atmosphere and a rich history as a former river port. As you wander through the town, you’ll find lovely heritage buildings and local art galleries, perfect for a stroll.

Be sure to visit the bustling Goolwa Wharf precinct, where you can watch boats glide by or hop on a river cruise. For those interested in local produce, the Sunday markets are a treat, offering a range of fresh, local goods.

If you fancy a bit of beach time, Goolwa Beach is just a short drive away. It’s a popular spot for a walk along the shore, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some cockle diggers at work.

The nearby Coorong National Park is also worth a visit, especially for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Goolwa’s blend of cultural heritage, charming streetscapes, and beautiful natural surroundings make it a delightful destination for a day trip.

A red and white building with a sign on it, located in Strathalbyn.

Strathalbyn can be combined with Goowla for a full day out or can stand on its own as another day trip from Adelaide.

It’s a beautiful country town with its well-preserved 19th-century architecture and scenic riverbanks. The antique shops and boutiques along High Street invite you to browse and perhaps find a unique treasure.

The town is famous for its antique stores, making it popular with collectors and history buffs.

Strolling through the streets, you’ll feel a sense of stepping back in time, especially when you reach the iconic Strathalbyn Bridge overlooking the Angas River. The parklands surrounding the river are perfect for a relaxing picnic.

Extend your trip with a short drive to the nearby Langhorne Creek wine region, where you can sample some of South Australia’s finest wines amidst vineyard settings.

Strathalbyn’s blend of historical charm, scenic beauty, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect choice for a leisurely day trip.

A large wire cage with five lions sleeping on top of it. There are two more lions sleeping nearby. There is a white 4WD car backed up to the cage.

A self-drive day trip to Monarto Safari Park offers an adventure just an hour’s drive up the freeway from Adelaide, perfect if you have children to amuse.

This vast open-range zoo, one of the largest in the world, brings the African safari experience to South Australia. You’ll have the chance to see animals roaming in large, natural habitats. Keep your eyes peeled for lions, rhinos, giraffes, and cheetahs, among others.

The park’s guided bus tours are the way to see the animals, offering up-close encounters and informative commentary about the wildlife.

For those seeking a more thrilling experience, the ‘Lions 360’ encounter is a must-try, allowing you to safely walk through a tunnel and emerge within claw’s reach of these incredible big cats.

Monarto Safari Park is deeply committed to conservation, and you’ll learn about their efforts to preserve these amazing species as you view them.

Combining wildlife, education, and conservation, a day trip to Monarto Safari Park is not only entertaining but provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature on a grand scale.

An aerial view of a long white beach. A car is driving along the beach and a few more cars are packed on the sand.

A self-drive day trip exploring the stunning beaches just south of Adelaide is an idyllic way to enjoy South Australia’s picturesque coastline. You could follow the Route 31 Coastal Drive or make your own way.

Starting from Christies Beach, known for its vibrant esplanade and clear waters, you can soak up the sun or enjoy a leisurely swim.

Moving on, Port Noarlunga is next, offering not just beautiful sands but also a spectacular reef that’s a favourite spot for snorkellers and divers. The historic jetty here is perfect for a stroll or a spot of fishing.

Further south, Moana welcomes you with its unique drive-on beach, making it a local favourite for a day of fun in the sun, especially if you’re bringing along a picnic or surfboard.

As you continue, Sellicks Beach is a great stop for breathtaking views where the hills meet the sea, and its long stretch of sand makes it an ideal spot for a peaceful walk or a relaxing day by the waves.

Each of these spots has its charm, offering everything from watery adventures to places to unwind.

A woman in front and a man behind walking through tall grass, higher than their heads

Just under two hours drive from Adelaide, Clare Valley is known for its world-class Riesling and picturesque vineyards. As you drive through the valley, you can stop for tastings and maybe a chat with the winemakers.

A visit to the heritage town of Mintaro is worth it, with its historic buildings and a relaxed country vibe. Try out the giant maze for some fun. Stop by Martindale Hall, used as a set for many movies filmed in SA.

If you fancy a bit of outdoor activity, the Riesling Trail is perfect for a leisurely walk or cycle, offering beautiful views of the vineyards and countryside.

And for a lunch stop, there are plenty of cosy cafes and country pubs serving delicious local produce. I personally love the Watervale Hotel or Mr Micks.

The Clare Valley combines stunning landscapes, great wine, awesome food and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a fantastic destination for a day trip.

A race car on a race track with two people beside it. one is walking, the other is in a wheelchair. Above the car is a sign across the track saying

This one is for the revheads! Located about an hour and a half drive from Adelaide, Tailem Bend is home to The Bend Motorsport Park, one of the most significant and exciting developments in Australian motorsport.

If you’re a racing fan, checking out the track events or experiencing a hot lap can be a real thrill. Many of the driving experiences offer great accessibility for those who require it too.

Besides the racetrack, Tailem Bend is rich in history. The town’s Old Tailem Town is one of Australia’s largest pioneer villages.

Here, you can step back in time and explore over a hundred buildings, each with its own story. It’s a great spot for families and anyone interested in Australian history.

The surrounding area also offers lovely views of the River Murray, making for a scenic drive.

Tailem Bend offers a unique mix of high-octane adventure and historical exploration, making it an interesting and varied day trip destination.

Day trips to adelaide hills.

One of the easiest and most impressive day tours from Adelaide is a visit to the Adelaide Hills, located just east of the city. Although it’s only a 30 minute drive from central Adelaide to many parts of the Hills, it feels a world away from the bustling city. The Adelaide Hills can be roughly split into two sections: the southern area, around Hahndorf, and the northern area, around Gumeracha. Both areas have interesting options for Adelaide day tours, so let’s have a closer look.

Hahndorf & Surrounds

Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens - Day Trips From Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

Heading southeast out of the city, along Glen Osmond Road and the M1, your day trip starts by climbing into the Mount Lofty Ranges. Be sure to take the turnoff for Mount Lofty, the highest point in the area and home to spectacular views back across the city. Under the peak is Cleland Conservation Park, with gorgeous walking trails and curious wildlife, while there’s also nearby Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens for those who prefer a little more manicure in their nature!

Further along the M1 is historic Hahndorf, settled by German migrants in the 1830s and still home to a significant German influence. Chow down on a pretzel, pork knuckle, sausage, and bier, or head to lovely Beerenberg Farm for homemade jams and chutneys. Just out of town, art lovers should definitely visit The Cedars, where Sir Hans Heysen, a renowned Australian artist lived and worked.

The Adelaide Hills is also famous for its produce, particularly wine. No Adelaide Hills day trip would be complete without visiting a winery (or several), such as Cobb’s Hill, Shaw & Smith, Hahndorf Hill, Bird in Hand, and Sinclair’s Gully. There’s plenty of craft breweries, gin distillers and whiskey distillers in the Hills as well, plus chocolate factories, and cheesemakers too!

Gumeracha & Birdswood

At the northern end of the Adelaide Hills is the Gumeracha and Birdwood area. Under an hour’s drive from central Adelaide, this area is a great spot for day trips from Adelaide. Gumeracha’s biggest attraction (quite literally!) is the Big Rocking Horse, apparently the world’s largest rocking horse! You can climb to the top for a small fee, while there’s also a wooden toy factory nearby, plus a petting zoo and picnic area.

Slightly further east in Birdwood, petrol heads shouldn’t miss the National Motor Museum. Home to hundreds of cars, this museum tells the story of motoring in Australia, with a particular focus on Australian designed and manufactured cars. There’s a huge variety of exhibits here, from early cars, to classic muscle, and an ultra-modern Bugatti Veyron (valued at well over a million dollars!).

Day trips to barossa valley.

The Barossa Valley has a well-deserved reputation as one of Australia’s best wine regions. Located about an hour north of Adelaide, and centred around the towns of Nuriootpa, Tanunda, and Lyndoch, the Barossa Valley is home to some of Australia’s most famous wine brands. Yalumba, Wolf Blass, Orlando (makers of Jacob’s Creek), Peter Lehmann, Seppeltsfield, and of course Penfolds all hail from the Barossa.

Spending a day trip from Adelaide travelling around the Barossa and tasting wine is one of life’s great pleasures, and shouldn’t be missed by anyone with more than a passing interest in wine! Although visiting the Barossa as a self drive day trip from Adelaide can be good fun, taking an organised tour to Barossa Valley might be an even better idea, as it removes both the worry about bookings, and about Australia’s strict drunk-driving laws.

Day trips to clare valley.

Located just two hours’ drive north of Adelaide, the beautiful and charming Clare Valley is a great spot for a day trip from Adelaide. Another of South Australia’s phenomenal wine regions, Clare Valley has a beautiful environment and some intriguing history to go with its outstanding wineries. Let’s have a look at some of the best day trip destinations in the Clare Valley.

Clare & Surrounds

The Riesling Trail - Short Trips from Adelaide - South Australia Road Trips

The Clare Valley itself is centred on the town of Clare, which is about two hours drive from Adelaide. The area is renowned for its excellent rieslings, and some of the standout wineries include Taylors Wines, Jim Barry Wines, Annie’s Lane, Sevenhill Cellars, and Kilikanoon. One of the highlight attractions here is known as the Riesling Trail, a 35 kilometre bike and walking trail that runs between Auburn and Clare. It passes many cellar doors along the way, so be sure to bring your bicycle or your walking shoes. For a break from wine tasting, consider heading to Spring Gully Conservation Park, with beautiful rolling hills, bushlands, epic sunsets, and plenty of Australian animals too. And there’s the spectacular Cascades waterfall, which is a great sight when in full flow.

On the eastern side of the valley is Burra, a picturesque and historic little town. There’s plenty of heritage buildings here to enjoy, like the Town Hall, St Mary’s Church, and the Railway Station (all of which have been impeccably restored), while just outside of town sits the iconic Midnight Oil House. This abandoned cottage became famous after featuring on the cover of Midnight Oil’s smash hit album Diesel and Dust . Burra is also a former mining town, and there’s plenty of historic mining related buildings in the area which are well worth checking out, along with the surprising amount of art at the Regional Art Gallery and the Clare Valley Art Trail.

Day trips to fleurieu peninsula.

Fleurieu Peninsula is just 45 minutes drive south of Adelaide, and is home to several fantastic short trips from Adelaide. With endless coastlines of pristine beaches, incredible wineries, and huge areas of undisturbed nature, a day trip from Adelaide to Fleurieu Peninsula should be near the top of every visitor’s bucket list.

McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale Winery - Things To Do Fleurieu Peninsula - South Australia Road Trips

The highlight of Fleurieu is undoubtedly the McLaren Vale with its outstanding wineries. One of Australia’s premier wine regions, McLaren Vale is internationally renowned for its Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Although there’s many wineries in the area, some of the best known include Hugh Hamilton, d’Arenberg, Mitolo and Hardy’s. A day trip from Adelaide to McLaren Vale just for wine tasting is a must-do for any serious wine connoisseur. Be sure to stop by d’Arenberg and marvel at their restaurant, built inside a three-storey glass Rubik’s Cube!

Victor Harbour & Goolwa

Located just over an hour’s drive south of Adelaide is the town of Victor Harbor. With a fantastic spot right on the coast, Victor Harbor offers plenty of day trip entertainment. There’s excellent surfing and fishing just near the town, while the historic Cockle Train steam railway puffs across to nearby Goolwa. Whales, seals, dolphins and sea lions are common sights near Victor Harbor, and there’s frequent cruises from the harbour to get a closer look. And for something unique – the causeway from Victor Harbor to Granite Island features one of the world’s last horse drawn trams and not to mention penguins!

Just east of Victor Harbor is Goolwa, an historic river port located at the mouth of the Murray River, Australia’s longest. Be sure to add Goolwa to your Victor Harbor day trip from Adelaide, and be sure to check out the heritage paddle steamers, the beautiful old sandstone buildings, and the appealing art galleries. There’s even a few antiques shops, which definitely adds to the charm, not to mention the great cafes.

Deep Creek Conservation Park

Deep Creek Conservation Park - Things To Do Fleurieu Peninsula - South Australia Road Trips

Nobody should consider their Fleurieu Peninsula day trip complete without visiting one of the spectacular parks in the area. Although Onkaparinga National Park is closer to Adelaide, Deep Creek Conservation Park is a real underrated gem. Home to 15 separate walking trails, with excellent coastal views, plenty of classic Australian animals, and lots of native plants too. It’s one of the best bushwalking spots on Fleurieu Peninsula, and a must-do for anyone visiting the area.

More Info on the Fleurieu Peninsula

Day trips to kangaroo island.

Clocking in at four hours each way (including a ferry!), a Kangaroo Island day trip from Adelaide is definitely at the longer end of a day trip. But it’s absolutely worth it. Kangaroo Island is a mostly undeveloped island just off the coast, a few hundred kilometres south of Adelaide. Separated from the mainland by a small strait, Kangaroo Island is renowned for endless wilderness, rugged coastlines, iconic lighthouses, and of course famous Australian animals.

Highlights on the island include Flinders Chase National Park, featuring Remarkable Rocks and Admiralty Arch. There’s also Seal Bay Conservation Park, with its huge colony of Australian sea lions (guided tours are required here), and the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, formerly known as Parndana Wildlife Park. And while on your day trip, don’t forget to check out the surprising produce – there’s several great wineries on Kangaroo Island, and it’s also renowned for excellent honey!

Due to the distance and time involved, perhaps consider doing an organised Kangaroo Island day tour . It’s a long day, so you might as well relax and let someone else do the driving!

More Info on the Kangaroo Island

Staying longer on k i, day trips to murraylands.

Located about an hour south-east of Adelaide, Murraylands is the region located around the banks of Australia’s longest river, the mighty Murray. Many of the local attractions involve getting in and on the river, including paddle steamers, cruises, skiing, fishing, and swimming, but there’s some fantastic things to see and do in Murraylands that are worthy of a family day trip in themselves.

Monarto Safari Park

Lion - Monarto Safari Park - Murraylands - South Australia Road Trips

Monarto Zoo (officially known as Monarto Safari Park) is the world’s largest open-range zoo, and is located just outside the regional city of Murray Bridge. Featuring a mixture of animals, from safari giants like giraffe, rhinos, lions and cheetah, to Australian favourites like wallabies, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils, Monarto Zoo is a great family day out and perfect for curious young minds. Close-up, interactive experiences are also available for an extra cost, which can be a real genuine thrill.

The Bend Motorsport Park

Just down the river from Murray Bridge is The Bend Motorsport Park, located outside the town of Tailem Bend. One of Murraylands’ great attractions, this near-new racing track and motorsport complex is a petrol head’s dream. With plenty of adrenaline-fuelled activities like hot laps, go-karting, off-roading, gymkhana, and even BYO car time trials, it’s a great place to visit for anyone even vaguely interested in motorsport. There’s also a hotel in the pit lane building, just in case the drive back to Adelaide is going to be too slow!

At the southern end of Murraylands, as the river empties into the sea, are two enormous freshwater lakes: Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert. Any Murraylands day trip from Adelaide should definitely include these beautiful areas on the itinerary. They’re a perfect spot for water sports: fishing, kayaking, swimming, skiing, and boating. Many spots of the lakes are very peaceful and relaxed, making them excellent locations for getting out of the city and truly enjoying a self drive day trip from Adelaide.

Campervan Touring Information

Barossa Valley

50km north of Adelaide | 1 - 2 days

One of Adelaide’s greatest assets is its close proximity to a number of fascinating regions. Vineyards and wineries, rolling hills, good food, art and quaint villages sum up the Barossa Valley. This self drive tour consists of 25 stops. To fit it all in will take two days. If you add on the Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf , add an extra day.

Drive straight to Angaston if you want to catch the Barossa Farmer’s market where over 50 stalls sell local produce and goodies every Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.

Otherwise, take your time along the Barossa Valley Way to Tanunda before heading to Angaston and meandering back to Adelaide via Eden Valley, Mount Pleasant and Hahndorf.

barossa valley map

Stop 1:  Your first stop before even reaching Tanunda is Jacobs Creek Winery which opens at 10 am. It’s about an hour and ten minutes from Adelaide if you take the more scenic drive through Williamstown. Jacobs Creek is one of Australia’s largest and oldest wine brands. They’ve been making wine for more than 160 years.

jacobs creek Barossa Valley

Stop 2: St. Hallett Winery is nearby. They’re famous for their shiraz but they have a lot more on offer.

Stop 3: Turkey Flat Winery is on the outskirts of town and is housed in a lovely old stone building. They open at 11 am.

Stop 4: From Tanunda, detour out along the palm lined road to the Seppeltsfield Winery (open 10.30 am) in a grand setting of landscaped gardens and fountains.

St Hallett Winery

Stop 5: While in Seppeltsfield, visit the Jam Factory, an old building repurposed for artist studios which includes a retail space and gallery. Resident artisans include a knife maker, ceramicist, glass artist, leather worker, hat maker and jeweler. A walkway through the buildings enables you to see them at work.

Stop 6: Artists and art lovers will find inspiration at the Barossa Regional Gallery and the Corrobboree Dream Art Gallery both in Tanunda. Corrobboree focuses on indigenous art.

barossa regional gallery

Stop 7: Beer lovers, you are catered for, too. Head over to Barossa Valley Brewing (near Turkey Flat Wines).

Stop 8 - 11: If you’re still in the mood for wine tasting there are another four wineries in and around Tanunda that really are worth trying. Peter Lehmann Wines, Penfolds, Bethany Wines and Artisans of Barossa are all nearby. Artisans of Barossa has a deck with views.

Stop 12: Between Artisans of Barossa and Bethany Wines, take a short detour up Menglers Hill road to Menglers Hill Lookout and Sculpture Park for some great views of the surrounding countryside.

Where to Stay in your Campervan

If you make every stop listed above, you’ll fill a day. Discovery Parks Barossa Valley is a highly rated and well-reviewed holiday park in Tanunda.

Stop 13: If you’re here on a Saturdya morning, start your day at the Barossa Farmers Market (7.30 am - 11.30 am) near the Vintners Bar and Grill where over 50 stalls sell local produce and other goodies.

Stop 14: Get some picnic goodies at the Barossa Valley Cheese Company.

Stop 15 - 18: Four wineries to stop into in Angaston include Lambert Estate (open 11 am), Yalumba – a sustainable winery housed in a lovely old stone building in landscaped gardens (open 10 am), Taste of Eden Valley (in a charming historic house in town showcasing many wines from the Eden Valley region) and Thorne Clarke Winery (a responsible winery in the countryside open 9am weekdays 11 am weekends).

Eden Valley

Stop 19: From Angaston, tootle down Eden Valley Road turning off at Burkes Hill Road to take in the views at Eden Valley Lookout.

Stop 20: Turn off at Rushlea Rd for Fernfield Winery – excellent wines served in a quaint little stone cottage (open Fri – Mon at 11 am).

Stop 21: Continue on to the cute country village of Eden Valley where you can stock up on provisions at the historic General Store.

Stop 22: The next town you come to is Springton, a country village of low stone walls around gardens and historic cottages. Here you can stop in at Bucks Bistro for lunch, Edenmae Estate Wines for a tasting and the Springton Hotel (a pub) for a beer.

Stop 23: An ancient gnarly old tree called the Herbig Family Tree is worth photographing on your way out of town. The tree is so named because the Herbig Family once lived within its massive trunk in 1860.

Mount Pleasant

Stop 24: The village of Mount Pleasant has a tree-lined main street. Historic stone cottages with bull nose verandahs face onto the street. Lovells Bakery is in one such cottage. Mount Pleasant Bakery and Café is in a 1905 brick building in the middle of town and has chesterfield armchairs in which to sit and enjoy one of their pies. Star Books is across the street.

Stop 25: Car enthusiasts and lovers of vintage might enjoy the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. They have changing exhibitions. At the time of writing these included a 1920s garage , a Bobby Sox, Fins and Chrome 1950s exhibit, and a model car exhibit. There’s a museum shop, research room, a Lego building area for the kids, and it is all housed in a historic stone three-story mill.

Melbourne to Apollo Bay: Discover the Great Ocean Road

Collect your rental car and get ready to embark on one of the world's greatest coastal drives: the Great Ocean Road .

Your Great Ocean Road Journey Begins

The Great Ocean Road Touring Route has a number of scenic lookouts all the way from Torquay to the border of Victoria and South Australia. Make your way along the coast to Bells Beach to check out the amazing surf and capture some spectacular views of the coastline and the Southern Ocean.

Be sure to stop at the town of Anglesea and visit the golf course: it's famous for the kangaroos lounging under trees and hopping across the greens!

Apollo Bay to Port Fairy: Marvel at the 12 Apostles

Continue along the Great Ocean Road for a scenic 3 hour drive through the lush Otway National Park, pausing at Port Campbell to view the magnificent 12 Apostles.

The 12 Apostles: Giants of the Ocean

The 12 Apostles are giant limestone rock stacks that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean and are considered the most beautiful of all Australia's natural wonders.

See how many of them you can spot - if you can only see eight, you have actually found them all! Four of the Apostles have now crumbled into the sea after many years of being battered by the salty ocean. The remaining Apostles are no less beautiful when the sunlight paints them in a rainbow of colours throughout the day.

Head to the viewing platform and see if you can spot marine mammals out at sea or in the caves below. You can also enjoy the rugged splendour of these famous rock formations by helicopter to get up close and personal with Victoria's dramatic coastal beauty.

Onwards to Port Fairy

The coastline is dotted with many plaques and signs marking the places where more than 160 ships sank along the Shipwreck Coast. Wreck Beach, just beyond the Twelve Apostles, marks the start of a trail where the anchors of two ships, the Marie Gabrielle (1869) and Fiji (1891), are embedded in the beach.

Tonight you can discover more about the region's maritime history by staying at the busy fishing port of Port Fairy .

Approximate Distance: 187 km | 117 miles   Total Driving Time: 2 hours 42 mins

Accommodation: Port Fairy - 2 Nights

12 Apostles

Free day in Port Fairy

Relax and enjoy a leisurely day in Port Fairy, one of Victoria’s earliest settled coastal villages.

Explore Port Fairy

This charming fishing village boasts wide streets lined with nineteenth century cottages, stone churches and huge Norfolk pine trees.

Here are some great ways to enjoy your day in Port Fairy:

  • Spend some time on the wharf and watch the fishermen unloading freshly-caught abalone and crayfish.
  • Take to the water: try a surfing lesson, a guided fishing trip or take a cruise to the seal colony on Lady Julia Percy Island.
  • Explore Port Fairy's wealth of boutiques, antique stores, and art shops dotted throughout the town.
  • Learn about the local maritime history on the Port Fairy Maritime and Shipwreck Heritage Walk.
  • Visit the replica village at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in nearby Warrnambool and see what life was like for the Shipwreck Coast’s first settlers.

Port Fairy

Port Fairy to Mount Gambier: Beautiful South Australia

Crossing the state border into South Australia, your journey continues to the volcanic landscapes of Mt Gambier.

Mt Gambier: Caves, Volcanoes, and Sinkholes

The geological wonders of Mt Gambier are well worth exploring. This dormant volcano houses the mysterious 70-metre-deep Blue Lake: its waters appear steel grey during winter, turning a startling shade of cobalt blue in the summer months.

The Umpherston Sinkhole may not have the prettiest name, but don't be put off: it's a spectacular sunken garden filled with flowers and greenery, hidden in a giant crater in the centre of Mt Gambier town. Created from a collapsed limestone cave, it must be seen to be believed.

Mount Gambier

Mt Gambier to Robe via Coonawarra Wine Region

Meander through the picturesque vineyards of Coonawarra , then return to the coast and discover South Australia's favourite seaside town.

South Australia is home to 18 wine regions, and Coonawarra is the country's top producer of premium red wines: it's affectionately known as "Australia's Other Red Centre". You'll find tantalizing local produce here too.

An optional stop at the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves is well worth the admission price. The 800,000-year-old caves feature spectacular stalactites and stalagmites and are a must see.

Robe and the Limestone Coast

The tiny town of Robe is known for its long white-sand beaches and delicious fresh crayfish. During Australia's Gold Rush era, some 16,500 Chinese fortune-seekers arrived here by boat and then trekked 400 kilometres overland to the Victorian Goldfields. The Chinese Monument on the foreshore marks the spot where they landed.

Enjoy a stroll along the jetty as the waves crash beneath your feet while you soak up the magnificent South Australian sunset.

Coonawarra Wine Region

Built in 1847, this charming sandstone building was the first in Robe. Originally home to the Government Resident, Robe House has been pivotal in the town's history. Featuring high vaulted ceilings and rustic floorboards, it now offers five fully self-contained bed and breakfast apartments
