The world's third-largest and fastest-growing cruise line, as MSC Cruises describes itself, sailed into New York City's Brooklyn Cruise Terminal this week with a glamorous megaship offering year-round excursions to select destinations.

MSC Meraviglia, a 1,036-foot long (France's Eiffel Tower is 1,083 feet high, and only if you include the tip), 213-foot-tall, 19-deck floater capable of holding more than 5,700 guests is a vacation in its own right, the cruise line says.

Start spreading the news: MSC Cruises launched year-round service from New York over the weekend, marking the line's third U.S. home port.

The cruise line's MSC Meraviglia ship arrived at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal Thursday and set sail Saturday on a week-long round-trip cruise to Florida's Port Canaveral and the Bahamas. MSC also has home ports in Port Canaveral and Miami.

“When we chose New York as the next step in our North American expansion, we knew that MSC Meraviglia would be the perfect ship, given her versatility and offerings for a wide variety of climates," MSC Cruises USA President Rubén Rodríguez said in a news release . "She’s big and innovative, she offers something for everyone, and now she’s more accessible than ever for our guests in and around New York."

Where will MSC Meraviglia sail from New York?

Meraviglia will sail several itineraries from New York, starting with seven to 11-night voyages to the Bahamas and Florida, with destinations such as Miami, Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve  (the line's private island).

Travelers can also board the ship for five and six-night sailings to Bermuda beginning in August and 10 and 11-night voyages that visit places like Boston, Massachusetts, Portland, Maine and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in Canada, among others.

Meraviglia launched in 2017  and can accommodate more than 5,700 passengers. The vessel also has 12 restaurants and 20 bars, along with six pools, a bowling alley, a spa and other amenities.

Guests will also be treated to striking scenery before even setting sail: the terminal, located in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood, offers prime views of Lower Manhattan, Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty.

How much will MSC Meraviglia's sailings from New York cost?

Prices vary depending on the sailing, but available staterooms on an eight-day round-trip cruise to Florida and the Bahamas departing Aug. 13 start at $699 per person based on double occupancy, in addition to $160 in taxes and fees each, according to the line's website .

The fare includes dining at the ship's main restaurants, access to the gym and sports facilities, Broadway-style shows and more.

The launch of year-round service from New York marks a continued investment in the U.S. market for the line, which has been expanding its footprint in America in recent years. The line has been ramping up sailings from U.S. home ports and will debut a new ship created with North American passengers in mind, World America , in 2025.

One of the world’s biggest cruise ships is now anchored in Brooklyn

The 19-story boat is as long as the Eiffel Tower is high.

A floating city has made its way to Red Hook —and it’s taller than many Brooklyn apartment buildings. 

The MSC Meraviglia, a new ship by MSC Cruises, docked at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal over the weekend and will use the port as its home base for itineraries between The Bahamas, Florida, Canada, New England and Bermuda.

The ship itself is like an extra neighborhood: Accommodating over 5,700 guests (plus staff), the cruise ship is 1,036 feet long, as high as the Eiffel Tower, and has 19 decks standing at 213 feet tall. Inside, the ship hosts a 985-seat Broadway-style theater, a 6,000-square-foot gym, plus 20 bars, 12 restaurants and a handful of pools and hot tubs. 

Like most cruise lines, MSC is headquartered overseas, in Geneva, Switzerland, but the local docking is still predicted to influence New York’s local economy. So far, 150 New Yorkers have been hired to facilitate terminal operations and the ship itself has 10,000 full-time-equivalent jobs to fill. 

Those who want to set sail from New York can choose from multiple itineraries, ranging from 5 to 11 nights. Upcoming trips include sailings to The Bahamas and Florida, August voyages to Bermuda and a fall New England trip to Newport, Boston and Portland in the U.S and Saint John, Halifax, Charlottetown, and Sydney in Canada. Trips start at $609 per person, for a week at sea with free wifi and unlimited food and drinks. Honestly, that's a whole lot cheaper than dining in New York.
