Great Divide Tour

Our longest and most popular tour! Often described by our guests as the highlight of their trip to Canada.

  • Clock 30 minutes

Narnia Tour

This is our short introductory tour that covers the “sweet spot” of the Lake Louise scenery.

We offer dog sledding tours in beautiful Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Canada’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. For a treasured lifetime memory, come mushing with our happy and hard-working Alaskan huskies. Kingmik guides have many years of experience “on the runners” in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alaska, B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and the lower 48. They know and love dogs and are dedicated and caring dog drivers. Each holds first aid certifications and most have had extensive wilderness experiences.

Why Choose Kingmik

  • We never put strangers together. Our sleds comfortably accommodate 2 adults. When you and yours book a tour, it will be only the 2 of you.
  • We run on average, only 4 teams per tour time. With the longest tour trail in the valley, there’s plenty of space for each team to truly experience the quiet beauty of travel by dog team.
  • Our guides have years of combined mushing experience, both on the tour trail and racing, that spans countries and continents. This means we have great stories and a perfect safety record.
  • Our dog care is simply unparalleled. Each dog is a treasured individual and member of our family.

The Only Dogsledding Tours in Banff National Park!

Dog Sled

A very well organized dog sledding tour company who take incredible care of their dogs.
Having experienced all 3 dog sledding companies around Canmore and Banff, this one is by far the best as far as views and a true dog sledding experience goes.

Highlight of our trip! My wife and I took our two daughters dog sledding. It was an incredible experience. Megan and Catherine -- our guides -- were friendly and knowledgeable. Experiencing such an important part of Canadian heritage opened our eyes to life before cars and snowmobiles.

AWESOME!!! FULL OF AWESOMENESS!! A tried and true dog lover celebrating her 60th for a week in the Canadian Rockies. The dog sled tour with @Kingmik was the highlight of the week! Megan, the owner and our guide, is a super human who cares incredibly for each of her 46 working dogs and 9 retirees. Every dog has their own personality and it comes out when they are mushing. I have a fondness for all of them but Polaris and I had a special bond. If you want to enjoy a special treat in a stunning setting and have a memory that lasts a lifetime - go dog sledding with Kingmik!

This is by far the most amazing thing I have done. I have traveled to many places, seen many unique places, but this dogsledding experience is at the top of my list. If you love dogs, love the beauty of nature, then you MUST put this on your to-do list. In April, we stayed at Chateau Lake Louise. The pick-up spot is 2 minutes from the Chateau. Our 1.5 hour tour was not only informative, but fun! Once the dogs knew the mushers were getting ready, they barked and barked. These dogs are bred for this, it's in their blood, and makes them beyond happy. It is definitely worth the ticket price, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again in the future. Thank you Kingmik for such an amazing experience!

If only we could give them 10,000 stars! This was a fantastic experience for the whole family!!

We learned a lot about the trail, mountains and glacier in addition to about all 65+ dogs. This was “the best day ever,” according to my daughter!!!

We did the Great Divide Tour… absolutely fantastic!!!

A wonderful experience. As a dog owner, I was very impressed with how healthy and well trained the dogs were. The guides were very happy to tell us all about their selection processes, care of their dogs, and adoption process when they retire. It was clear the dogs were very happy and well loved. The tour itself was picturesque and very enjoyable. Worth the price, for sure.

Our family of four went dog sledding with Guide’s, Jared and Rob over spring break and this was the highlight of our trip! The guys were incredibly friendly and informative along with the entire tour. They even let our children try mushing. We were very pleased with how friendly the guides and pups were. I would definitely go again!

This was one of the most memorable winter activities EVER! (And we actually came for 10 days of skiing ;-) Interaction w/ the dogs, musher, the entire dog sledding tour. Epic! 5 star experience of the Canadian Winter Wonder Land. Would give it 10 stars, if possible. Go for the 1 ½ hour tour. Time will fly, worth every penny and then some.

It's hard to know what to mention first! The amazing personalities of the dogs? (even in the span of a couple hours you start to see their uniqueness - it's hard not to fall in love! :) ) The infectious passion of the guides? (Megan was awesome, and shared with us her love for the dogs, the land, and her sport) The beautiful scenery? (what better way to take in the mountains and forest in true Canadian winter) We left feeling inspired, and with smiles on our faces all day! For us it was an amazing "once-in-a-lifetime" experience, but we may just have to go back again ;) THANK YOU Megan & Kingmik & Lily (our team leader)

OMG! This was by far the best event of the week! The dogs are amazing and well trained. We were so impressed by the guides and how well they took care of the dogs. And not only did they take such good care of them, but they knew each and every one of their personalities. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! And I fell in love with one of the dogs that were up for adoption. We get to pick him up in April. So excited! And our guide Kylie was super awesome!

Search no farther, it's time to book your dog sledding tour with Kingmik. My wife and I recently visited Lake Louise three weekends ago (right before COVID-19 started) to have an adventurous weekends in the Canadian Rockies. Needless to say we were blown away by the adventure, skiing, and scenery!

Did you have an amazing time but forget to tip? Leave a tip for your guide here!

About dog-sledding

Though it isn’t known exactly when dog sledding first appeared, there’s no question that its advent changed the course of human history in the North.

For the first time, the most remote corners of the ice-covered Canadian Arctic were open to hunters and explorers, who could now cross vast expanses in a significantly shorter amount of time. All thanks to Man’s best friend. For centuries, dogs were used to hunt whales, cross major distances, deliver mail, and compete in long-distance races.

Nowadays, hunting whales and delivering mail is no longer the chief job for these sturdy and hard-working dogs. But they still love to show off their strength and endurance! An exciting dog sledding tour is a must-needed highlight to any northbound expedition. Explore Canada’s vast snowscapes just like indigenous peoples have done for eons.

Dog sledding is a type of transportation with one or more dogs pulling a sled. They are guided by mushers, the driver of the dog sled.

Most often, the dogs are roped together in pairs and stand in two equal lines. In some regions, they might also form a fan in front of the sled. Normally, each dog in the pack has a role. There are leaders, point dogs, swing dogs, and wheel dogs. A certain role requires specific character traits and lead dogs are crucial for team performance. Hence, these pups receive special attention from the mushers.

Husky dog barks

Throughout history, dog-drawn carts and sleds have been used for various reasons. These range from transport in frosty rural regions to sled dog races and recreational sports. Dog sledding as a type of transport has mostly been used in icy regions such as Greenland, Canada, and Alaska for many years. Sleds are small and flexible enough to maneuver and reach the most unattainable areas of the North.

Dog sledding is not only a winter sport. During the snowless months, carting is a great alternative for sledding dogs to stay in shape. Dryland mushing is practiced all over the world and is a fun activity. However, there’s no shortage of snow during winter in Yukon and Quebec , hence we offer dog sledding tours here.

Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are two of the main sled dog breeds, prized for their speed and stamina.

History of dog sledding

Loyal, hardworking and trainable, dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years. From looking after children to delivering mail and even vital vaccines, dogs have proved to be precious partners and loyal guards.

Husky Dog Gang

The Inuit, indigenous people of North America, valued durable, strong and well-coated associates. They were one of the first people to harness dogs in prolonged polar bear hunting expeditions. These journeys lead over harsh ice and through thick snow. The Inuit built sleds from driftwood and leather straps. Contrary to modern sledding, the dogs didn’t have a leader or any specific roles in their teams.

Because they could withstand the biting cold and lack of food, the dogs would go on long-distance expeditions in the most difficult conditions. They were often left alone on isolated islands for the summer months and had to fend for themselves. So only the strongest ones survived until the winter season.

Types of sled dogs

Historically the main breeds for dog sledding have varied between different regions. Russians bred Siberian Huskies, which are fast, focused and relatively easy to train for specific jobs. Meanwhile, North American Arctic regions, including Alaska, favored Malamutes, strong and hardy animals who can survive the harshest conditions.

During Canada’s Gold Rush, Malamutes were in high demand and their prices rose to unbelievable heights. Europeans started bringing in other hounds from the continent and bred them with the local ones.

Dog sledding through the forest

One of the most popular cross breeds is the Alaskan Husky. This breed is a mix of various Northern breeds, such as the Siberian Husky, Greyhound, and the German Shorthaired-Pointer. These Husky puppies are working dogs, bred specifically for dog sledding. They’re still considered to be one of the best types of dogs for sledding today.

Historically, sled dogs were appreciated for their size, strength, and stamina. Nowadays, working dogs are bred for endurance and speed. In addition to the ever-faithful Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, the most popular breeds for sledding these days include Canadian Eskimo dogs, Samoyeds, and Chinooks.

Dog Sledding in winter

Sled-drawing dogs are working dogs and they love running. It’s part of their nature and they enjoy dog sledding rides as much as people do. Our dog-sledding guides treat their animals with care, rotating them so none get tired. They get breaks between the shifts, with plenty of love and care. Some dogs are so excited about sledding that they get upset if they don’t get to run with their team for a while!

Some of the world's toughest racing events

Important racing events in Canada With its rich history and weather conditions ideal for dog sledding, it’s no surprise that some of the most amazing dog sled races are held in Canada.

Canadian Challenge

The Yukon Quest race was first held in 1984. It is a 1,000 mile trail that follows the historical gold rush trail from Whitehorse, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska. It is one of the most famous dog sled races in Canada. Thus, Yukon dog sledding tours have become popular winter activities in this part of Canada.

The Haliburton Highlands Dogsled Derby is held in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada. It features many events with an average of seventy dog teams coming to compete from Quebec, Canada, and some areas of the northern United States. One increasingly popular special event that is held is known as “Skijoring”. This means that participants are pulled along on skis instead of sleds. These races are part of the Ontario Federation of Sleddog Sports.

The Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival holds annual dog sledding races as part of their festival. These races are affiliated with the World Cup Series of the International Federation of Sleddog Sports. They have races for teams with four and six dogs as well as junior races.

General area info Canada is a huge country that spans 9.98 million square kilometres. It possesses more freshwater lakes than any other country in the world! With spectacular mountain ranges, glaciers, and extensive forests, Canada is a treasure chest of rustic beauty. Natural resources play a large part in the Canadian economy. The provinces Ontario and Quebec are Canada’s most developed and populated. Ontario is home to many husky tours and breeders. The three territories Northwest, Nunavut and Yukon are the least populated areas of Canada. Here, you will find more wilderness than developed areas. The forty-four national parks of Canada protect the natural treasures and allow explorers to witness true wilderness. Winters in Canada characteristically bring deep snow and cold winds. This provides great dog sledding conditions!

Best Dog Sledding Whistler Tours [2024 Guide]

Dogsledding Whistler is a quintessentially Canadian experience that will immerse you in the breathtaking beauty of the Great White North. Whistler is known for its world-class ski slopes, but dog sledding offers a unique way to experience the winter and a great activity for non-skiers .

Originating from the indigenous people of the Arctic, dog sledding holds a special place in Canadian history. What once was the primary means of winter transportation has now evolved into a recreational experience. Today, dog sledding in Whistler is a popular activity for tourists and locals alike, offering an authentic way to explore the stunning wilderness of Canada. You’ll have access to two different tours that cater to different preferences.

As one of the best things to do in Whistler in winter , dog sledding tours provide an opportunity to bond with these furry companions and learn more about their role in Canadian culture. These sled dogs can reach impressive speeds of up to 40km per hour and can cover vast distances in a day.

There are two different Dog Sledding Whistler Tours to choose from, Blackcomb Dogsled and Canadian wilderness. Both tours include professional guides who will lead you through a scenic route and share their knowledge of mushing.

Dog Sledding tours in Whistler are suitable for all ages and fitness levels, so anyone can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or solo, dog sledding is a must-try activity in Whistler.

However, it’s important to note that spots are limited for this highly sought-after experience. So, don’t miss out! Book your Whistler Dogsledding adventure early to ensure you secure your place in this unforgettable activity.

History Of Dog Sledding In Canada

Dog sledding, also known as mushing, holds a rich and significant history in Canada. It originated with the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, who used dogs for transportation, hunting, and companionship in the harsh winter conditions.

These early sleds, often made from bone or wood, were pulled by resilient and enduring dogs, typically of breeds like the Inuit Sled Dog or the Canadian Eskimo Dog, who were well-adapted to the severe Arctic climate.

As European explorers and fur traders began to venture into the Arctic in the 16th and 17th centuries, they quickly adopted the indigenous practice of dog sledding as a viable means of navigating the snowy landscapes. Dog sleds were instrumental in the exploration of the Canadian North, enabling the establishment of trade routes and aiding in the delivery of mail and supplies to remote areas.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dog sledding had also become a popular sport. Notably, the Gold Rush era saw the rise of the long-distance sled dog race, a tradition that continues to this day with famous races like the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest.

In recent years, dog sledding has transitioned from a necessary mode of transportation to a significant cultural activity and popular tourist attraction. Dog sledding tours, such as those in Whistler, allow visitors to experience this historical tradition first-hand.

Trapper’s Run Dog Sled Tour

Photo of a group of sled dogs in a snowy winter landscape and trees in the distance.

Trapper’s Run Dog Sled Tour , offered by Canadian Wilderness, is a signature Whistler adventure that takes you on an immersive journey into Canada’s breathtaking landscapes. The tour starts with an introduction to your team of eager sled dogs, where you will learn about their training, unique personalities, and the crucial role they play in mushing.

Your professionally trained musher will guide you on how to harness and stage the dogs. You and your team will then embark on a thrilling voyage through the pristine snow-cloaked old-growth forests of the Callaghan Valley, and your guide will teach you the essential commands needed to drive the sled.

Helmets are mandatory on this tour, I wore my ski helmet but if you don’t have your own Canadian Wilderness has all the equipment you need. (looking at their website it doesn’t state this either)

When I took the Trapper’s Run Tour the guides didn’t let us ride or “mush” the sled ourselves, which I found quite disappointing as most dog sled tours in Canada allow for this. So if this is something you are wanting to do, this tour may not be for you.

The Trapper’s Run Dog Sled Tour is approximately 2.5 hours long , with departures at 9:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 3:00 pm daily. This tour is suitable for all fitness levels, however there is a minimum age requirement of four years and a weight restriction of 350 lbs total per sled.

Transportation is included in this tour, with round-trip transportation available from Whistler Village and several hotels to the Canadian Wilderness base. There is no self-parking available at the base. This unforgettable experience comes at a cost of $579 for 1 or 2 people , or $679 for 2 people and a small child .

Mountain Mushing Tour Whistler

Photo of a snowy landscape and trail with a pack of sled dogs in the foreground and two people mushing in the background.

The Mountain Mushing Tour offered by Blackcomb Dogsled is Whistler’s longest dog sled trail!

Your adventure begins with a friendly greeting from your professional musher and your eager dog team. The musher will guide you through the initial process, familiarizing you with the equipment, the dogs, and the basic commands needed to maneuver the sled.

The Mountain Mushing Tour allows guests the unique opportunity to “mush” their sled, offering a hands-on experience unlike the Trapper’s Run tour. As you glide through snow-covered trails and tranquil landscapes of the Callaghan Valley you’ll get the chance to stop and take photos along the way.

The tour also includes a stop at a charming yurt where you can warm up, enjoy some hot apple cider, and learn more about the rich history of dog sledding in Canada.

This tour lasts for about 3 hours and runs four times daily , including 9:00am, 10:30am, 1:30pm and 3:00pm. Suitable for individuals of all fitness levels, the Mountain Mushing Tour has a minimum age requirement of three years and a weight restriction of 350 lbs total per sled.

Transportation can be arranged from many of Whistler’s hotels for this tour, or you can self-park at the Blackcomb Dogsled base. The cost of this tour is $559 for 2 people and one sled, or $659 for 2 adults and 1 small child .

Comparing Trapper’s Run Dog Sled Tour and Mountain Mushing Tour in Whistler

Trapper’s Run Dog Sled Tour and the Mountain Mushing Tour are both unique dog sledding experiences offered in Whistler, each with their own pros and cons.

The Trapper’s Run Tour , lasting approximately 2.5 hours, is a great choice for those who prefer a shorter, more relaxed adventure. A notable advantage of this tour is its comprehensive transportation service, which includes round-trip transportation from Whistler Village and several hotels to the Canadian Wilderness base. This eliminates the need for self-parking, which can be particularly beneficial in the busy winter season or if you are visiting Whistler without a car. However, this tour does not offer the hands-on experience of ‘mushing’ your sled, which could be a downside for those seeking a more immersive tour.

Mountain Mushing Tour

On the other hand, the Mountain Mushing Tour , offered by Blackcomb Dogsled, is noticeably longer, lasting around 3 hours. This tour offers a unique hands-on experience where guests can ‘mush’ their sled, making it an exciting choice. The tour includes a stop at a charming yurt for a historical and cultural interlude. Unlike the Trapper’s Run, the Mountain Mushing Tour does allow for self-parking, making it more flexible for guests with their own transport. On the downside, the longer duration of this tour might be considered a disadvantage for those with a tighter schedule.

The best choice ultimately depends on individual preferences, schedule, and transportation needs.

However, it’s important to check with your tour provider as availability may vary due to weather conditions. What To Wear For Whistler Dog Sledding Tours

With temperatures ranging from -10 to -20 degrees Celsius during the winter months, it’s essential to layer up to maintain body heat. If you are petting the dogs before or after your tour, just keep in mind that you may get stains on your clothing from the dogs paws (I know I did!)

1. Base Layer: Begin with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep your skin dry and prevent chills. Opt for thermal or merino wool undergarments that provide warmth without being bulky.

2. Insulation Layer: An insulation layer helps retain body heat by trapping warm air close to your body. Fleece pullovers or down vests are great options for this layer.

3. Outer Layer: Your outer layer should be waterproof and wind-resistant to protect against snow and cold winds. Look for a high-quality winter parka or snow jacket, and waterproof snow pants.

4. Footwear: A pair of insulated, waterproof winter boots is a must-have. Look for boots with good grip to avoid slipping on icy surfaces. Pair these with warm, thermal socks, preferably a blend of wool and synthetic fibres for optimal warmth and moisture control.

5. Headwear: Protect your head and ears from the cold by wearing a thermal beanie or a hat with ear flaps. If it’s particularly cold, a balaclava can cover and protect your face as well. If taking the Trapper’s Run tour, you can bring your own ski helmet.

6. Gloves: Insulated and waterproof gloves or mittens are essential to protect your hands from the cold and wet conditions. Mittens are generally warmer than gloves, but gloves allow more dexterity.

7. Eye Protection: Sunglasses or goggles are recommended to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare on the snow and from wind-driven snow.

8. Scarf/Neck Gaiter: These items help protect your neck and can be pulled up over your face for added warmth.

Dressing properly for the cold conditions will greatly enhance your dog sledding experience in Whistler. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing to your activity level and the weather. Always bring more clothing than you think you might need, as you can always remove layers if needed. For a more comprehensive list of what to pack, check out my Canada packing list for every season.

Activity Information

A truly Canadian adventure, dog sledding originated approximately 4,000 years ago. Researchers suggest that life in Northern Canada may never have been possible without sled dogs.

These Arctic dogs have been bred over centuries to withstand cold temperatures and endure pulling sleds over distances of up to 130 kilometres (80 miles) a day. They may reach speeds of up to 32 km/h (20 m.p.h).

Trained from an early age to run with the pack, sled dogs truly enjoy the activity and can’t wait until the musher hooks them up to the gang-lines.

Best Dog Sledding Tour in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Table of Contents

If you are looking to go dog sledding in Yellowknife, I’ve got the perfect tour for you!

As you plan your dog sledding trip to this capital city within the Northwestern Territories, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind- particularly if you’ve never traveled to this region above the arcrtic circle before.

Most excitingly, it’s dark a lot of the time in winter, and it gives you a great chance of seeing the northern lights in addition to a dog sledding excursion! The beauty of this above the snow is incredible.

Because it’s dark most of the time, snowy, and located so far north, it’s also cold! So, prep for the weather to ensure that you’ll have a great time as you go dog sledding in Yellowknife.

dog sledding northern lights

Don’t have time to read the whole review? I recommend this dog sledding tour in Yellowknife – it even includes northern lights views!

Husky dog sledding tour in Yellowknife racing into the northern lights on a night ride through the snow.

#1 Best Dogsledding Tour in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Price Per Person: $100-150 (depending on the time of year)

Duration: ~ 1 hour

Location: Pick-ups from various hotels and Air B&Bs

This experience is top-notch right from the get-go as they will pick you up directly from your hotel or Air B&B. You just let them know where you are staying and they will scoop you up!

From there, you’ll be taken to their dog sledding venue in Yellowknife, where you will experience nothing short of true northern hospitality.

You’ll have a chance to meet your musher, pet your dogs, and take lots of pictures with them before heading out on the trails!

The small group tour takes you through a true winter wonderland as you get to experience the dogs displaying their strength and all they’ve trained for. It’s an incredible sight to see!

When you arrive back at the facility, you’ll get more time with the dog mushing family and another opportunity to snap some pictures to remember this great winter adventure.

Best Time of Year to Go Dog Sledding in Yellowknife

For your best chance at having a significant amount of snowfall, you’ll want to book your dog sledding in the Northwest Territories sometime between mid-December and mid-March .  In Canada, these are considered the winter months (even though the cold can easily start in November and last through April) and will give you the opportunity to mush with the world’s most amazing sled dogs.

For the tour mentioned in this post, you’ll have to wait slightly longer as they begin their bookings at the beginning of January and continue through the end of March for their dog sledding in Yellowknife tours.

Where is Yellowknife?

Yellowknife is in the Northwestern Territories of Canada and is the capital city there. It is above the arctic circle and lies between the north shore of Great Slave Lake, which is five miles south of the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife is also the territory between Nunavut and the Yukon and above Alberta.

If you want to make your way from British Columbia, which sits slightly to the East of Alberta and where you may have seen the Indian Arm, to Yellowknife, you will want to fly, which takes just under four hours.

Yellowknife Aurora Season

Conveniently, as you would want to book a dog sledding tour in the wintertime, this is also the best time to see the northern lights in Yellowknife, and it is considered “Aurora Season.” Spanning the months from mid-November to the beginning of April, as that is when there is the least amount of sunlight.

With it being dark, it gives you the best chance of seeing the magic in the sky. Yellowknife is known for this and the ability to see this special occurrence. People travel here specifically for it, so if you are coming from somewhere far away for your dog sledding tour, make sure to include this as an activity in your itinerary as well!

Is Dog Sledding Ethical?

When well cared for, the dogs enjoy the dog sledding as much as we do. You will find plenty of information out there that speaks to the cruelty of animals when they are placed in dog sledding operations, but if the facility has the dogs’ best interest in mind they can live a wonderful life.

Tips for Dog Sledding in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Make sure you are prepared with your winter gear! Some of the main items you’ll want to have before hopping on a sleigh include:

  • Neck Warmers
  • Waterproof, warm boots
  • An insulated winter jacket

If you want to take pictures of the beautiful scenery, it may be worth it to look into buying a decent camera for your trip as well. At the very least, upgrade your phone so you can get some half-way decent ones!

Other Winter Activities in Yellowknife

There are so many great winter activities in Yellowknife to participate in besides dog sledding – here are some of my favorites:

You can see the famous snow castle on the Great Slave Lake! Akin to a winter festival, each year, there is a castle built here, and a courtyard, ice bars, ice slides, craft sales, fashion shows, and music all happen right alongside it.

You can also book a full-service tour to see the Aurora Borealis, or the northern lights , through the package offered by Aurora Village. They have teepees set up for you while you wait for the lights to make their appearance – and they pick you up and drop you off at your accommodations!

In the dead of the winter, many parts of this territory also become frozen over and turn into ice roads. These ice roads lead to some of the best places for ice fishing you can find.

Another great winter activity in Yellowknife!

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.
