Review of Loch Ness Boat Tour & Castle Visit with Jacobite Cruises

October 9, 2021 | Posted in: UK

When I was in Inverness, Scotland for a conference, I was lucky enough to go on a Loch Ness boat tour in the Scottish highlands with a bunch of other bloggers and Cruises by Jacobite. Onboard and cameras ready, we all hoped for that money shot ;-)

The Jacobite Loch Ness Cruise

loch ness boat tour

During the boat tour, we got an explanation of the things we could see onshore, the history and geographical features of the loch, and – of course – the legend of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. Known far beyond the United Kingdom , I'm sure you'll have heard of Nessie.

Our cruise guide shared a lot of interesting facts, such as the dimensions of the lake. Especially interesting was that we could follow how deep it was below the boat on a special screen.

jacobite cruise loch ness

But I've never been good with numbers and it was only when I got outside and gazed over the vastness of the water, that the size of the Loch started to dawn on me. It's an impressive lake and I'm sure it was even more so underneath the heavy clouds and gray sky that hovered over us that day;

After an unsuccessful search for Nessie, the boat dropped us off to see the old fortress.

History of the Castle

boat trips loch ness

Once one of the most important castles of Scotland it constantly moved hands between the Scots and the English. Its last occupants – government troops – blew it up when they abandoned it during the Jacobite Risings as they didn't want it to fall in the hands of the Jacobites.

There's also a visitor center where you can find information, drinks and – of course – souvenirs.

Practical information

Planning your loch ness cruise.

We were taken from Inverness to Clansman Harbour at Loch Ness from where several boat trips on Loch Ness depart. We went by bus, which took about 30 minutes. The distance is only 8 miles/13 km, so if there's not a lot of traffic, it's even quicker.

on board a loch ness cruise

Wondering how to arrive at the Loch Ness Cruises starting point by yourself? The easiest way from Inverness is by (rental) car, but you can also take bus 16 at Farraline Park, Inverness' bus station. It goes approximately every two hours at the time of writing. Be sure to check bus times, though, so that you don't need to take a taxi back to Inverness.

For details on public transportation in Scotland, check Traveline Scotland .

In addition to Clansman Harbour there are 2 newer points from where the Jacobite Loch Ness tours depart:

  • Docharroch Lock IV3 8JG (which is 5 miles/8 km from the city)
  • Tomnahurich Bridge IV3 5TD (1.5 miles/ 2.5 km from the city center & reachable by foot)

Jacobite runs tours throughout the year. Check their website for further information here.

Jacobite Cruise on Loch Ness

Jacobite cruise on Loch Ness

It was my husband's birthday, and he had expressed an interest in trying the Jacobite cruises on Loch Ness . We had been around Loch Ness and visited Urquhart Castle on foot many times, but never a cruise on Loch Ness so we relished the opportunity.

After a quick search for " loch ness cruises ", we found the Loch Ness by Jacobite cruise , they had a great website and the catamarans looked state of the art.

We left Inverness and travelled south by car along the A82 for about seven miles until we arrived early at our destination, Dochgarroch . There is a nice café and shop to visit or have a walk along the banks of the canal, before joining the boat.

Loch Ness by Jacobite

We boarded the Jacobite Maverick, at Dochgarroch Lock for a two-hour cruise. The fare was £26 per adult. The Jacobite Maverick has disabled toilet facilities onboard. We left Dochgarron at 12 noon and sailed south at a leisurely pace along the Caledonian Canal, passing the Darroch and Torr woods on our left and the pretty Bona Lighthouse.

Jacobite Loch Ness cruises boat tour

The Caledonian Canal

Thomas Telford was commissioned as the principal engineer in the building of the Caledonian Canal which took twelve years to construct and opened in 1822. In all, the canal is twenty-two miles long and has twenty-nine locks.

The Great Glen runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect weather for sitting outside on the upper deck of the Jacobite Maverick.

On each catamaran there is a screen showing a live sonar readout from the murky depths below, no "Nessie" sized objects but plenty of fish. It's a great feature and makes you think you will be the one to find the monster first.  The onboard guide was full of interesting facts about Loch Ness and the surrounding areas.

Jacobite Loch Ness cruises

The canal opened up into Loch Ness and the magnificent panoramic views of the legendary loch and mountains; it enthralled us for the rest of the cruise. We kept a lookout for Nessie too, but we had no luck in seeing the Loch Ness monster .

Loch Ness is a large deep freshwater loch in the Highlands of Scotland, 230m at its deepest, and sits on the Great Glen fault line, so if you feel any rumbles in the deep this could be why! Loch Ness is an area of stunning natural beauty, a must-see for everyone. Loch Ness contains more water than all of the lakes in Wales and England combined, wow!

Historic Urquhart Castle - Jacobite experience

Loch Ness Monster

  • Urquhart Castle

Halfway into the journey, the ship paused for photographs of Urquhart Castle , which is situated on a rocky peninsula called Strone Point on the West bank of Loch Ness, approximately seventeen miles south of Inverness. Historical records suggest that there has been a castle on this site from at least the 13th century and the castle has borne witness to some of the most dramatic chapters in the history of the Scottish Nation. Urquhart Castle is dominated by the prominent Grant Tower and the ship’s location on the loch offers plenty of opportunities to take photographs of this picturesque gem. The castle is owned by Historic Scotland .

Trip past historic Urquhart Castle, accessible from Inverness bus station.

Jacobite Loch Ness Cruise

Loch Ness by Jacobite has been offering tourist cruises on Loch Ness for over 40 years, welcoming nearly 300,000 visitors each year on their fleet of catamarans. Their tours can last from anything up to one hour to a 7-hour extravaganza. They have won awards from Visit Scotland, Trip Advisor, Green Tourism, and Grammy.

What else can I see after the cruise?

You are spoilt for choice for things to see in the Inverness area:

  • Dolphins at Chanonry Point
  • Culloden Battlefield
  • Culloden Viaduct
  • Clava Cairns
  • Rogie Falls
  • Beauly Priory

Conclusion - Loch Ness by Jacobite

Suggestions; bring your own picnic and drinks, beverage prices on board are very expensive. Wrap up warm on cooler days if you are travelling on the upper deck. Indulge in a Miele’s Ice-cream when you get off of the boat, there are lots of flavours to choose from and the mobile cabin is situated near the car park.

We had a fantastic trip with "Jacobite Cruise on Loch Ness", we would highly recommend it on your travels around Scotland and Scottish Highlands.  Why not check out the Jacobite Steam Train in Fort William next?  An excellent tourist train journey along the Glenfinnan Viaduct as seen in Harry Potter.

Cruise season in Seattle starts with a rally against pollution

As thousands of people flocked to the Seattle waterfront on Saturday to embark on the first cruise of the year, climate activists protested nearby demanding the cruise industry do more to address pollution.

From April to late October, nearly 1.7 million “revenue” passengers — which comes out to more than 800,000 unique passengers — are expected to depart Seattle on 276 cruises, Stephanie Jones Stebbins, managing director of the port’s maritime division, said during a news conference Saturday morning.

This year marks the 25th year of cruises between Seattle and Alaska.

She said this cruise season is estimated to provide almost $900 million in economic impact to the city’s tourism and other sectors. The port calculates that each ship that home ports in Seattle has a $4 million impact on the local economy.

“Over the last 25 years, the cruise business has become a significant part of our local economy, contributing to hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs,” Port Commissioner Ryan Calkins said in a statement.

While thousands of voyagers wove through customs lines at Pier 66 to board the Norwegian Bliss headed to Alaska, members of activist group Seattle Cruise Control rallied outside. The volunteer organization is focused on educating people on the environmental impacts of the cruise industry.

The demonstration included children in sea creature costumes , a live band and a performance by the Red Rebel Brigade, a climate activist performance troupe.

The group wants the port to reduce the number of cruises it sends out and make the route from Seattle to Alaska a no-waste-dumping zone.

The port says it’s committed to being one of the most “environmentally progressive” cruise ports in North America. The current goal is to phase out seaport-related emissions by 2050. Additionally, the port plans to start shore power at Pier 66 this summer, meaning ships can plug into the power supply when docked at the port rather than run their engines, reducing emissions.

Seattle Cruise Control activists say the plan isn’t enough.

Elizabeth Burton, a member of the organization, said she doesn’t believe shore power in Seattle will be an effective solution because a ship plugging in for one stop of its trek only addresses a small percentage of the ship’s overall emissions throughout a trip.

For much of the time, she said, “The cruise ships are still polluting the air and wrecking the climate.”

Burton said she’s sorry that passengers of the Bliss don’t realize the harm being caused.

“We’re not trying to ruin their vacation, but we’d like to raise the consciousness in general,” she said. “Is it really worth wrecking the future for all future generations? So you can go on this trip?”

Standing in the customs line less than 25 feet from the demonstration, David Torok was ready to hop on the Bliss. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, resident said he’s hoping to see the northern lights and whatever Alaska has to offer, whales included.

“I’m sorry that people get mad about the cruise boat, but oh, well,” Torok said. “Tell them to go on a cruise. Maybe they’ll change their mind.”

GM's Cruise Resumes Self-Driving Taxi Testing in Phoenix with Human Drivers After California Ban

Posted: April 10, 2024 | Last updated: April 10, 2024

Cruise will resume testing its self-driving taxis in Phoenix, Arizona but without passengers and with humans behind the wheel. California legislators prohibited GM's subsidiary Cruise from operating its autonomous vehicles after one of them hit and dragged a pedestrian in San Francisco, following an incident where the victim was pushed into the robotaxi's path. This ban came shortly after a separate occasion where a Cruise vehicle failed to yield to a fire truck's emergency signals, resulting in a collision. Cruise issued a software update to address how its vehicles respond in crash events and laid off 24% of its workforce after the incidents.

Urquhart Castle

The iconic Urquhart Castle is one of Scotland's most popular attractions. Situated on the north-western shore of Loch Ness, it offers visitors fascinating insights into its dramatic history and spectacular views over the world-famous Loch.

Atmospheric beauty of Urquhart Castle

It’s easy to fall in love with the atmospheric beauty of Urquhart Castle which sits on Strone Point, a rocky peninsula on Loch Ness.

Some people believe that the castle was originally the site of a Pictish fort, visited by St Columba in 565AD. No one can say for certain that was the case. However, there was almost certainly a Pictish settlement in the area at the time, as it would have been a key site from which to control the Great Glen and Northern Scotland.

Written records show that a castle has stood on this site from at least the 13th Century, as a result of an uprising by the people of Moray against King Alexander II. With the rebellion quashed, the King named his son-in-law, Alan Durward, the Lordship of Urquhart, and established a stronghold in the area.

Following the death of Alan Durward, in 1275, Urquhart Castle passed to John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch. This marked the beginning of a turbulent time in the castle’s history as ownership frequently passed back and forth between the English and Scottish Crown.

However by the late 14th Century, a new conflict had arisen. The Scottish Crown was now trying to defend itself against incursions from the Macdonalds, Lords of the Isles. For 150 years, the ownership of the castle changed hands between the two sides, before order was somewhat restored by George Gordon, the 2nd Earl of Huntly.

In 1689, Urquhart Castle saw its last action, when a small garrison supporting the Protestant monarchy of William and Mary held off a much larger Jacobite force. Later that year the English Garrison left the castle, destroying it as they went, to prevent it from being used as a Jacobite base.

Nowadays, the castle is owned by Historic Scotland and has a visitor centre, which was built in 2002, as well as car parks. The Grant Tower is the best-preserved part of the castle.
