And Caravan on Salt Flat again

This episode feels like a new TG S12E02 all over again(salt flat speed record road trip with JC in C6 ZR1/JM in previous gen CTS-V/RH in a pre facelift Gen3 Challenger SRT8)

Wild Guess-Clarkson=Vette/Hammond=Trackhawk(he likes SRT Mopar)/May=CTS-V(May is a fan of Caddy)

All we can be sure about is Clarkson is the driver of Corvette

' src=

Yeah and looking at it Hammond probably takes the Trackhawk and May will be using the Cadillac.

The big question is, what’s going on with the Corvette, CTS-V and Trackhawk

' src=

No idea at this stage!

The Grand Tour season 3 episode 8 recap

Barry Stevens

What a truly brilliant episode that was, for me this episode is what The Grand Tour should be about. It’s three friends doing daft stuff with minimal scripting and the lads just having fun. In episode 8 we see Clarkson, Hammond and May set of on an RV holiday in the Nevada desert. Very quickly they decide that they can’t stay together in just one RV and decide to get one each and customise them to suit their own tastes.

Hammond keeps it simple and effectively builds a tent on the back of a truck, May builds a pub inside his and Clarkson’s can only really be described as a boat/toilet RV hybrid (you have to see it for this to make sense!)

the grand tour s3e8

After the first leg of their journey, the trio checks in at an RV park which looks like a dreary version of the worst caravan park you’ve ever seen. As you might expect, during the evening May and Clarkson decide to burgle Hammond and relieve him of all of his clothes leaving him to wonder around in nothing but a towel in the morning.

There are a couple of visits to two different race tracks where the boys race dune buggies and also hold a drifting competition in which they are all pretty dismal.

Throughout the show, Jeremy keeps on seeing a man wearing Evel Knievel race wear. I can only presume this is a reference to the old Top Gear angry American race driver they had after the Stig left.

the grand tour s3e8

The show concludes with an RV demolition derby which looks like a whole lot of fun.

Throughout the entire episode the chemistry between the three presenters was electric and for me, this has certainly been the most fun I’ve had watching this season of The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour season 3 episode 9 will air on 8th March.

The American Returns For Latest Episode Of The Grand Tour Season 3

If you’ve seen the latest episode of The Grand Tour , you more than likely saw the American flag-clad racing suit that you may have recognised from the beginning of Amazon’s hit car show.

Throughout the episode, the faceless figure can be seen haunting Jeremy from afar, with Hammond and May not being able to see the person when Clarkson asks for some kind of confirmation to what he’s seeing. He appears at the end of the episode however, racing an RV in a destruction derby-esque race against the trio until Jeremy aims his RV just right and manages to roll the opposition’s vehicle. It bursts into flames, but the driver inside seems to disappear.

the grand tour rv episode

Those eagle-eyed viewers will have realised that this is indeed a nod to The American (Mike Skinner)  from the first season of The Grand Tour, who was later replaced by Abbie Eaton . He was met with plenty of negative criticism, and after being dropped from the show, seemed to take it badly and took to Twitter.

At the end of the episode, a circle of fire erupts, surrounding the trio’s three RVs as they slept. It’s quite obvious that the team realised The American didn’t take his leaving too well, so decided to reflect his revenge in this episode.

I have always found the road trip specials to be a bit hit & miss. RVing in the US is a lot different than caravaning in the UK and I’d hoped they wouldn’t just revert back into their “caravans are crap” attitude as soon as they could. What was I thinking? Having said that, James’ rolling pub was absolutely brilliant. I’m sure there was serious discussion about whether or not Clarkson would be allowed to destroy it. Even the orangutan himself seemed to have reservations about damaging it. I want to travel in that RV. I spotted that the character was supposed to be the American right off but I’d have preferred bringing Skinner back and giving everyone a proper payoff on the gag. I’m willing to bet a lot of viewers would have thought the whole thing was a lot funnier if they’d gotten some kind of punchline. GRAND TOUR needs to either make the driver a larger part of the series or drop the idea of a series regular ‘character’ driver altogether. My suggestion: bring in known guest drivers every week to test the cars. I know that it drops a supposed control factor from the tests but most professional drivers are going to be pretty close in how they throw a road car around a track. If you want it to appear scientific, you could do one of two things: 1. Bring in two drivers – Not only would it add a bit of competition for bragging rights between the two drivers but you could then use an aggregate of the times as the official board time. OR 2. Keep your ‘in house’ driver and have the weekly guest driver compete against her/him. Use the aggregate score as mentioned above for the official board time. This at least adds back a bit of the ‘regular driver’ control factor. Bringing in pro drivers would be a treat for the fans and for the drivers themselves. It would also allow Grand Tour to bring in drivers who were previous Top Gear “Stigs” to throw a new car around for old time’s sake. The segment could even be done in such a way that it wouldn’t have to take screen time away from something else. The driver in-tent interviews, if there’s one at all, could be short (although it would be nice to have Abby or a new regular driver on set as both drivers comment on the lap, car, etc.). Both runs would be displayed simultaneously using top/bottom splitscreen. If Mr. Wildman would like any further production advice, he can feel free to contact me. LOL

I spotted it right away!

Realized who it was almost immediately. A bit of a chuckle in an otherwise average episode.

Demolition rv: the grand tour season 3 episode 8 review.

We’ve already had the hit-and-miss Colombian special in season 3, but Clarkson, Hammond and May, weren’t satisfied with that, as this week we’ve been treated to another special.

RV holiday? That’s just American caravanning, isn’t it?

The’s pretty much the question Clarkson asks in the show’s opener, and to be fair, he seems to have a point. However, the Yanks love an RV holiday, so the GT boys head over the atlantic to see what the fuss is all about. We cut to them sharing an old RV ‘kindly’ provided by Mr Wilman, the show’s producer.

May’s at the wheel whilst Clarkson and Hammond are playing cards, and it’s clear they’re not having much fun. Clarkson moans about the toilet facilities in a comical manner, before making a typical ‘American’ coffee in a very tongue-in-cheek way, which I rather enjoyed. Quickly the trio decide that it’d be better for all involved if they all go off and get their own bespoke RVs.

A pub, a flying bridge, and…tent on a truck

We join to the trio, two days later in the desert where we are presented with May’s take on the ultimate RV, which is essentially a traditional English pub, with the appropriate name of The Rack and Pinion. He invites his esteemed colleagues in for a guided tour before offering them a choice of drink between ‘Lady Petrol’, ‘Brummie’s Ruin’ or ‘Warm Brown Beer’. After talking a bit of ‘pub bollox’ as Hammond calls it, the trio vacate the Rack and Pinion and head in to Clarkson’s version of the ultimate RV.

Needless to say, it’s a very different take on May’s home-from-home approach. This is because he has fitted his RV with…a toilet. Not just any toilet, a proper one, with a cistern. There’s also a bed that even Warwick Davis wouldn’t have room to stretch out, but Clarkson saves the best ’til last. He takes Hammond and May up to the roof. Up there he’s only gone and converted in to a flying bridge, like you get on a luxury yacht. This, as Clarkson points out, is fully operational, allowing him to drive the RV from the roof. I’m not sure whether that’s insane, or inspired…

That of course leaves the Hamster who has decided to go for a much more minimlist approach. For starters, it’s not even a proper RV, it’s an old truck with looks to be a scaled down version of the Grand Tour tent attached. Inside there’s a bed that even the army would deem too low budget, a telescope, a rocking chair, and on the back, a dirtbike. No expense spared…

Time to hit the road

After the brief introductions to their machines, the trio hit the road, to see what their RVs are like on the open road. Clarkson’s seems to have a dash that makes as much sense as a Brexit negotiation (with about the same amount of working functions), May’s seems to need blue language in order to change gear and Hammond’s, well that has the same top speed as an elderly snail.

CHM head to an RV park to try and get a greater sense of what the appeal is, and even just arriving causes issues, as Clarkson’s struggles to stop, and then he burns the director’s hand trying to turn the ignition off. May then bores the locals with his scintillating pub knowledge, and Hammond makes a new friend. Speaking of friend, Clarkson keeps seeing an odd figure who looks strangely familiar… It’s also worth noting at this point that even though the episode is in its early stages, there are plenty of gags that landed well with me, and it was pretty a laugh a minute.

After Hammond wakes up find his clothes are gone, he and Clarkson force May to join them in a bit of light dune racing. You would expect that Captain Slow hate it, finding the whole thing a bit ‘philistine’, but no, he bloody loved it. After that adrenaline blast, the trio hit the road once more, before heading further in to the desert, which alloys Clarkson to drive his RV from his flying bridge, which goes…well.

From there on in, the entertainment just keeps coming and coming, and what I love is that a lot felt pretty organic and it didn’t feel overly scripted like the Colombia special. Mind you, the bit where Clarkson collided with May’s RV did seem a bit staged, but in all honesty, I was laughing too much to car.

Time for more racing

Between then and they boys’ next stop, there is plenty of action and laughs along the way – too much to go through here. Their next stop is the Spring Mountain Complex, which may sound like some sort of nature reserve, but the only thing to observe here is all American muscle. That’s because the three play about in a Jeep Cherokee Trackhawk, a Cadillac CTS and a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

Hammond, who was piloting the Jeep, decided it would be a great idea to do a drift competition, which he and Clarkson end up struggling with. Surprisingly, May comes out on top here…sort of. After some more GT antics and some haphazard exploring, the trio decide that the only thing left to do is to enter what’s left of their RVs in to a demolition derby – last one standing wins.

Final thoughts

Overall, I thought this was a cracking episode from start to finish, and it’s definitely one I would go back to and re-watch. I’ll be honest, I was a bit apprehensive in what to expect, but the episode was a complete home run. I’m finding it very difficult to pick faults with the episode, even after having quote some time to compile my thoughts (I watched it on Saturday).

Car Obsession Rating (5 / 5)

it was an over scripted pile of garbage, being presented by people who have sold their sole to an american company

Fair enough pal, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Thanks for reading 🙂
