We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to Italy and Zicasso's travel partner did a marvelous job putting it all together. They were able to get things set up promptly as it was under three months from the time we decided to schedule the trip to the departure date. During that time, it went from being just my husband and me to adding our three adult sons, and they helped readjust the schedule and budget to make it more affordable for five of us. All three hotels (Rome, Florence, and Venice) were excellent regarding location, cleanliness, and customer service. That we were American and were unfamiliar with Italian transportation because we had never been to Italy, it was extremely nice to have private transfers and all the train transfers set up. Even when we arrived by train in Venice, they had a person there to meet us and assist with transport to the water taxi, then walk us to the hotel. Everyone was professional, helpful, and on time. The tour guides were also wonderful and so well-educated. There were several modifications needed as we worked through the itinerary and changes to who was coming when, and our tour operator was very easy to work with on these. The only negative was that it was non-refundable if you needed to cancel in the 70 days before departure, even though many of the hotels stated refundable if canceled within a few days. Many tours I looked at and used on this trip could be canceled and refunded within 24 hours. I found this a much safer way to schedule tours and not lose out if there were any issues affecting our tour days. It's always a risk not knowing if someone in the group will be ill or injured and not able to participate. There is a $250 service fee for each change if the team needs to make changes once the final itinerary has been completed, so that does need to be taken into consideration. We were fortunate that we did not need to make any last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend our travel agency and will use them for our next trip.

Our trip, starting and ending in Edinburgh and looping through the Highlands with an emphasis on the Isle of Skye, Inverness, and Speyside, was very enjoyable, much to the credit of our travel agency. We were awed by the sheer beauty of the Highlands, the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people, and the country's fascinating historical sites.  Our culinary experience was outstanding, with a variety of traditional dishes and contemporary cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. As could be expected, distillery visits gave us an opportunity to enjoy a range of whiskey flavors and styles. Jane, the owner of the travel agency, was accommodating in creating the ideal itinerary, finding superb lodging and dining experiences for us, and helping us through last-minute bookings due to a flight cancellation.  Our driver/guide was personable, knowledgeable, timely, and professional. He entertained us with amusing Scottish lore, local and regional information, and eagerly adjusted the itinerary as needed to suit our personal tastes and interests.

Zicasso’s travel company helped plan our trip in October 2023, and it was an incredible experience. Beginning in the fall of 2022, when we initially sought assistance with planning our trip, our travel agent took a significant amount of time speaking with us, communicating via email, and, in response to feedback, providing updated itineraries that were more aligned with our family's interests and vacation style. Follow-up while we were in the country was exemplary. I don't think an email or text sent to the company failed to elicit a response in less than a few hours (even with some staff members being in the US and the time change). The post-trip call was equally enjoyable. It felt like we were working with close friends who were invested in the success and happiness of our family on this vacation. I hope it is more than once (now twice) in a lifetime that our family journeys to Scotland. When we are able to return, it will definitely be with our travel team's assistance! A special note of thanks to Zicasso for making it possible to locate a company as incredible as our agency!

The trip was wonderful and the support from the travel agency was unstinting. From the first day, they were quickly responsive and continually exceeded our expectations. We had no hiccups along the way, so we didn't need to call on them during the trip, but I am confident they would have sorted any issue that arose.  Their reputation was reinforced by our guide in Bath, who said they were a great company to work with and emphasized that anybody who "picked up the phone" would provide the high level of service we'd experienced.

On this amazing planet, one can find an abundance of places with spectacular scenery. Scotland is one of those. However, what you can’t find is our travel team. Had it not been for their professionalism and expertise, we would have probably buzzed along in our own car, going ooh and ah, and missing all the wonderful spots that made our trip so memorable. In the planning, Zicasso’s travel agent was always attentive and quick to respond with a suggestion or a nay or yay. Our travel agent was delightful company. She is a historian, geologist, and geographer, all rolled into one, with a great sense of humor. At one point we got stuck in an unprecedented weather event. Not to worry, our travel team was on it with an alternative, so we really didn’t miss much. But the icing on the cake is how much they care about their clients. It is obvious they love their country and want to share it with everyone. And they did, to the fullest and utmost extent!

Our anniversary trip to Scotland and Ireland, planned by Zicasso’s travel company, was unforgettable! Our travel agent was very easy to work with! She made several adjustments to our itinerary at our request and also to address some of the vendor's changes, such as one of our flights (originally from Inverness to Dublin) and one of our "in a local home, dinner and cooking lessons" (originally in Scotland). She was cognizant of my budget constraints and suggested I do some of the driving myself to reduce the cost of private drivers. Then, during our trip, little things like a wine and cheese board in our room upon our arrival in Edinburgh were very much appreciated! Also, when things didn't go as planned (flight delay from Aberdeen to Dublin), she was available (at 2am Pacific time) to help smooth out the bumps! Even the way our trip itinerary built up to a subtle crescendo with our stay in a castle made this a trip we will never forget!

The UK shines from June to August, though there’s never any guarantee that their summer is full of sunshine and warmth. The days are long, tourist crowds are abundant and the country wakes up from its dark slumber and celebrates – a lot.

Spring and autumn can be cool and wet but with some sunny days, and the days are still long enough to enjoy this country’s diverse and beautiful scenery.

Winter – December to February - brings short days, grey skies and sometimes snow, though this is more often in Scotland and England’s northern counties.

History and government

Early history.

The United Kingdom came into being in 1707 with the political union of England and Scotland (Wales was classed under the Kingdom of England). In 1800, the Act of Union with the Kingdom of Ireland formed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The last major change was in 1922, when the Anglo-Irish Treaty saw the Irish Free State form and secede from the UK, and Northern Ireland becoming part of the UK (though it wasn’t until 1927 that the UK formerly changed its name to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). Though united, each country had their own laws, churches and education systems. 

Recent history

The 18th and 19th centuries were notable for the UK’s countless wars with France, colonisation in the Caribbean, the loss of colonies in North America, the gain of Canada, the discovery of Australia, the second wave of the British Empire in India, Asia and Africa, the beginnings of the industrial revolution, the abolishment of slavery and the long and successful reign of Queen Victoria. Needless to say, this is but a snapshot. The first half of the 20th century was marred by two devastating world wars, which not only devastated the population but the wealth of the country. It also saw the crumbling of the British Empire, with independence being sought and won in Ireland in 1922 and India in 1947, and by the 1980s Britain had withdrawn from all of its colonies. In 1997 devolution was established in Scotland and Wales.

2. Skinheads

Originally nothing to do with hooligans, racists and fascism, skinheads were born in the 1960s in working class areas of the UK. Skinheads fashioned themselves on Jamaican rude boy style, listened to ska and wore tight jeans, white t-shirts, braces, checked shirts and cherry red docs.

3. Glam rockers

Glam rockers wore high shoes, outrageous clothes, dramatic makeup, lavish hairstyles and plenty of things that glittered. This subculture rose to prominence in the early 1970s and faded out about 5 years later, but went on to influence punk, goths and new romantics. Think David Bowie’s androgynous phase and Garry Glitter.

Though not originating in the UK, when punk hit the UK’s shores in the mid 70s, it was hard to miss. UK punks were on the whole more theatrical than those in the US. Armed with anti-establishment views, mohawks, ripped clothes held together by safety pins (anti-fashion), piercings and thrashing around to punk rock, punk caused a big stir, which died down not long after it exploded.

An offshoot of the post-punk scene, goth became popular in the early 1980s. Although there are many styles of goth, they are characterised by wearing dark clothes, heavy make-up and dark hair.

I absolutely loved the Real Britain tour by Trafalgar! Our guide Paul was very friendly and knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour which made our time so enjoyable! Our driver Ian was also very good! I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone who wants a well-rounded taste of England! I was very happy to see a bit of Scotland as well! The only thing I would ask is that Tour Radar would put more specific details about the tour on their site as it appears on Trafalgar’s website. I would have appreciated the list of the names of the hotels, optional experiences, and which particular meals were included etc. Having finished the tour, I know better where I would like to stay longer the next time I’m in England! I got to see so much amazing scenery in the countryside as we travelled and sights at the destinations we stopped. It was truly a wonderful and unforgettable experience!

Tourradar gave me several options to choose from. I chose to go with Trafalgar. It had very good reviews. Everything was very well planned and the accommodations chosen were very good. I would use them again!

Wonderful trip. Saw a great variety of places.

Scotland was beautiful, the hotels and meals ....not so good. The coach and driver were excellent, while the tour director had exactly nothing to say while driving for hours thru magnificent landscapes. The Edinburgh hotel was passable, but was not in Edinburgh. The hotel in Glasboro was a Radison Blue, which was fine. the remaining hotels were awful. In one hotel we had a double bed, not a king, not a queen, but a double bed....really! In 2 hotels the fire alarms went off before 6AM in the morning. You had to react because these buildings were old and most may have lacked fire protection. The hotel breakfasts were generally awful, crowded, and long waits to get a coffee from the machine. The included dinners were terrible, the same menu night after night. One exception was the included dinner in Edinburgh, which was at a restaurant and was quality food and drink. everything after that was trash. breakfast on the last day in Glasgow was very nice, and what I would have expected from an upscale tour. One thing I thought was an insult, was the night spent on Skye. There was no included tour of Skye, so if you wanted to see anything other than the hotel, the only choice was an optional $29.00 bus ride for an hour or so. Bad weather forced the cancellation of the trip to Orkney...so we killed a day with a castle visit. Earlier this year we were on a Viking river cruise that missed a port for a mechanical reason. Before I got home, Viking sent me a $1000.00 credit for a future cruise. They know how to treat guests, Insight not so much. In summary, low end hotels that were in many cases dirty, and mediocre food, and a tour director that had nothing to say. that will be my first and last Insight tour.

Wonderful! First time traveling outside of the US alone. It was a beautiful tour! Henry was amazing! He was full of knowledge and fun facts. The itinerary was awesome and well organized. So happy I went! I made life long friends sling the way! Recommend and will be using this tour again soon! Just book it! You’ll love it!

Time to go around places of interest was limited. Most of the time we reach our destinations just in time for the excursion and no spare time to go around. Overall I enjoyed the tour with the complimentary bit of history narration from the Tour Director.

Everything about our Overland Ireland tour was a fulfillment of a dream. Our guide was knowledgeable, kind and personable. The bus was solid and clean. Ireland is a place of magic and we were immersed in its beauty. All That said I am extremely displeased with the service of Tour radar. Your communication skills are so sadly lacking. We went to the wrong starting point but it was the place YOU posted to go. We Wil NEVER se Tpur radar again. It was only through the kindness of our tour guide and several well placed phone calls that we actually got to go on the tour even though we were where we thought we needed to be at the right time.

It was great! An amazing first date with the Highlands and Isle of Skye, as our guide put it. :) This tour lets you get a good idea of what Isle of Skye is like and it's a great short escape to a place that feels like driving around in a postcard or National Geographic documentary. Our guide, Neil, was also truly wonderful. You get great value for what you paid and the tour is really well organised. I would 100% recommend this tour and I'm pretty sure I'll be back at MacBackpackers for some of the other tours as well.

Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.

I recently traveled with a friend to Scotland. We included a week long tour with Intrepid, booked through Tour Radar. We paid a very healthy sum for the tour, $3,460 each. The description said the trip was appropriate for ages 15-99. It also described two nights in Portree on Isle of Skye with a private van tour on the full day on Isle of Sky. My friend and I chose this tour because of the time spent in Portree and on Isle of Skye, the small group size, and that if it was okay for ages 15-99 then I’d be fine six months post a major knee surgery. What wasn’t included in the description and what happened: -No where did it say that we’d be expected to walk/transport our luggage on foot from Points of transportation to our lodging ranging from 10-20 minutes. My 94 year old father-in-law lives with us and is able bodied, but there’s no way he could have done these distances While also carrying/pulling luggage. My 87 year old mother could not accomplish this either. I could do it with my recovering knee, but I was slower and it also used up some of the energy I needed for enjoying walking portions of the tour. I didn’t anticipate having to schlep my suitcase for 15 minutes at a time over uneven sidewalks, etc. I would have packed differently had I known or we would have looked for a different tour. -My friend and I still wonder why Fort Williams was included on the itinerary as a place to stay?
The only thing Intrepid provided was a walk to a castle that wasn’t open for visitors. The rest was on our own and there really wasn’t much happening other than a nice, little museum. We would have preferred more time on Isle of Skye. -We were notified prior to departure that our time on Isle of Skye would be at Kyleakin - not in Portree- and we’d have to arrange our own tour. Phone numbers were provided but no one on the tour had any luck booking anything prior to arriving, calls not returned, no availability, etc. So, 3-4 of our tour group spent 2 FULL hours or more on their phones while we were in Fort Williams trying to come up with some options for us. They pieced together a public bus ride to/from Kyleakin to Portree and a private taxi tour at our own expense! (After paying for it in the cost of our tour.) This should have been done by Intrepid!! Not once were we offered reimbursement. We didn’t have any time in Portree. We’d hoped to have lunch before our taxi tour, but all the restaurants were full. I found a to-go cup of tea and scone at a bike shop, then time in cue to use a bathroom. I’d looked forward to staying in Portree and had many places I had planned to walk to when not on the private van tour we were sold but didn’t get. Also, While staying in Kyleakin, the guest house did not provide a cooked breakfast, just light snacks in our rooms. Breakfast was provided, but we had to walk to/from the restaurant that was a mile each way. This used up time we could have been site seeing. Also, it would use up my knee energy for the days site-seeing. My friend went to breakfast but I skipped the walk to reserve my energy for site-seeing. Oh, and the whiskey tasting…we passed distilleries but we Were given a private lesson on tasting with our tour guide. While he did a fine job, the setting was not the same as a distillery setting. The room was bare, we used wine glasses, we were Supposed to take notes but no hard surfaces to write on, etc. Just wasn’t what any of us were expecting. I found Intrepid’s disregard for the changes and the misleading descriptions as to be very unprofessional. I use tours so that I don’t have to do all of the arranging. Why pay you if I’m going to have to do it myself? Next time I book a tour, I’ll be sure to avoid Intrepid. Many friends have asked about my trip. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the tour. I’ve shared that multiple times now. I’m not the only member of the group that walked away Disappointed. We didn’t want to “blame” the tour guide, I don’t think he was responsible, he was just trying to keep us happy as he could sense how displeased we were. His answers too our questions were not satisfying at all. He seemed to be trying to cover for the company best he could.

Overall, this is an excellent way to see most of the South of Ireland and get to know what you want to return to and explore further. The days are jam packed with visits and activities, the evenings are free to dine and walk the towns. Our guide was Anthony. Exceptional individual who was able to flex to the needs of the group and squeeze in a few unlisted places. A man who is proud of his country and heritage and willing to share all he knows with his passengers. Only two major suggestions for change - (1) provide the clients with the name and contact information of the tour guide, this will offset any anxiety about pick up locations, last minute questions, etc. (2) provide the point of pick up and the point of drop off much earlier. Most clients will be booking their first night stay and return stay once the tour booking is confirmed. Waiting to provide this information results in some of the clients losing out on promotion and perhaps booking in locations quite far away from these sites. Thanks!

Really impressed with this company. Great booking process offering a better price than others and they were very quick to respond and clarify any questions I had via email. Where they really came into their own was with the after sales service. Unfortunately, BA cancelled one of my flights and re-booked me onto an earlier flight that was not logistically possible for me. Christy from Crystal Travel contacted me to let me know of the change and when I said that I would not be able to make the alternative that BA had offered, she was very helpful in supporting my request to cancel my flights and issue a refund. 5 Stars.

Middle East latest: Ships loaded with 240 tonnes of aid to leave Gaza - as Israeli PM says 'unintended strike' killed charity workers

The IDF has expressed its "sincere sorrow" for the deaths of seven aid workers, including one from the UK, in a strike it launched on Gaza. A spokesman insisted the IDF was "committed to international law" after the attack, and vowed to share findings of an investigation.

A Polish man has been named as one of the aid workers killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza.

Damian Sobol, from Przemysl in southeastern Poland, was named by his hometown mayor.

Officials lowered national flags to half-mast on the town's administration buildings.

Wojciech Bakun wrote on X that there were no words to describe the loss of this "fantastic young man".

According to his Facebook profile, Mr Sobol was educated at the Hotel and Catering School in Przemysl.

His latest posts showed him travelling a lot and volunteering for World Central Kitchen in Morocco and Corfu last year.

In 2022, he fundraised for the World Central Kitchen in Poland.

Andrzej Duda, the Polish president, said: "These brave people are changing the world for the better with their service and sacrifice for the others."

Israel has said the strike was "unintended" and will be investigated.

This is a photo from the funeral of Issam Abu Taha, a Palestinian who worked for World Central Kitchen.

He was among those killed in an Israeli strike on the charity's aid convoy yesterday.

Other casualties included a Briton and an Australian.

Like many of his colleagues, Mr Abu Taha was still wearing his protective gear with the charity's logo when his body was brought to al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central Gaza town of Deir al Balah.

Our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall   says the Israeli government's admission that its forces were behind the "unintended strike" on aid workers in Gaza will not stop foreign governments demanding answers.

He said: "This was not collateral damage - there was no Hamas target close by, the aid workers were not caught up in a strike elsewhere.

"Looking at the photos, the missile went straight through the roof of the car, straight through the charity branding on the top of the car like a dart hitting a bullseye, rather than the aircraft seeing the charity branding and realising it was not an enemy target."

Meanwhile, Bunkall is cautious about the possibility of a ceasefire after Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement that a new proposal has been drafted by negotiators in Cairo and sent to Hamas.

When asked if the development was significant, he said: "Possibly."

"The only reason I reserve judgement on this is how many times have we seen what appears to be optimism and progress only for something to come along hours or days later to take everything back to square one?"

But he said the Israelis had been "quite proactive" over the past 48 hours leading into the negotiations.

The details of the proposal are not yet known, he added, although it is thought Israel wants to reach a deal before the end of Ramadan on 9 April, which would also be just before the Jewish holiday of Passover.

But the road ahead is far from straightforward - it has become increasingly difficult to communicate with Hamas leadership, so any response from them could take several days.

Israel's prime minister has acknowledged that Israeli forces carried out the strike that killed seven aid workers in Gaza.

Benjamin Netanyahu said: "Unfortunately over the last day, there was a tragic incident of an unintended strike of our forces on innocent people in the Gaza Strip."

He said officials are "checking this thoroughly" and "will do everything for this not to happen again".

He was speaking after being released from Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem after a successful hernia operation.

"It happens in war, we check it to the end, we are in contact with the governments, and we will do everything so that this thing does not happen again," he said.

Earlier, we reported that World Central Kitchen was suspending its operations in Gaza after the killings of seven of its aid workers in an Israeli strike.

Three aid ships from Cyprus arrived on Monday carrying hundreds of tonnes of food and supplies organised by the charity and the UAE.

Around 100 tonnes had been unloaded before the charity suspended operations but now Cypriot foreign ministry spokesman Theodoros Gotsis says the remaining 240 tonnes will be sent back to Cyprus.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, says a new Gaza truce and hostage release proposal has been drafted by negotiators in Cairo and sent to Hamas.

The prime minister's office said a delegation of Mossad, the Shin Bet and the IDF will return this afternoon from Cairo.

"As part of the talks, with the helpful mediation of Egypt, the mediators formulated an up-to-date proposal for addressing Hamas," he said.

"Israel expects the mediators to work harder with Hamas to promote negotiations in favour of a deal.

"The State of Israel continues to make all necessary efforts to free the abductees from Hamas and return them to Israel."

Israeli government spokesman Avi Hyman has told Sky News the building hit in Damascus was not a consulate, contradicting news reports.

The attack, which killed two Iranian generals and five military officers, has been blamed on Israel, with Iran vowing revenge.

Mr Hyman told Sky News: "The building hit was not a consulate, it was not an embassy, not a diplomatic mission, and I dare say that the Iranian individuals in that building were likely not there to distribute Easter eggs."

He was also questioned about the difficulty of getting aid to Gaza, in light of the deaths of seven aid workers confirmed earlier today.

He said: "There have been a number of reports, written reports coming out from various organisations suggesting there is imminent famine and that type of thing.

"We do not believe that to be the case."

He said reports of famine were "based on old, out-of-date information".

"These are based on Hamas figures, Hamas health ministry figures," he said.

"Hamas not long ago was killing babies, was killing children in front of their parents, parents in front of their children, burning whole families alive.

"So we take anything that comes out of Hamas-run Gaza with a spoon of salt, not just a pinch of salt."

One Briton is confirmed dead in an Israeli strike that killed seven aid workers earlier but there are reports that as many as three Britons may have been killed.

The Associated Press cites hospital records as saying the dead include three Britons, an Australian, a Pole and an American-Canadian dual citizen.

Sky News has been unable to verify these reports.

The workers were volunteers for World Central Kitchen travelling in a three-car convoy when they were killed.

They had just unloaded more than 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza by sea, the charity said.

Rishi Sunak says he is "shocked and saddened" by reports that seven World Central kitchen aid workers, including one Briton, were killed in Gaza last night.

Speaking during a visit to the North East of England, Mr Sunak said: "We are asking Israel to investigate what happened urgently, because clearly there are questions that need to be answered.

"My thoughts are with their friends and family.

"They are doing fantastic work bringing alleviation to the suffering that many are experiencing in Gaza.

"They should be praised and commended for what they are doing.

"They need to be allowed to do that work unhindered and it is incumbent on Israel to make sure they can do that."

His comments echo those by Lord Cameron, the foreign secretary, earlier.

In words reported by state media, Ali Khamenei has said Israel would regret its attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian city of Damascus.

An adviser to Khamenei said the US has responsibility, whether Washington was aware of the attack or not.

The strike killed two Iranian generals and five officers.

Israel rarely acknowledges strikes against Iranian targets and said it had no comment on the latest attack in Syria.

The Kremlin has also weighed in, saying the strike was an act of aggression.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such attacks violated all the foundations of international law.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

• The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
• The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company. 
• Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
