Delhi Safari is the story of a journey undertaken by a leopard cub, his mother, a monkey, a bear and a parrot when the forest they live in is on the verge of destruction. Builders have encroached upon their forest and the animals decide to go to Delhi and protest in front of the parliament and ask the parliament some very simple yet pertinent questions they were thinking of– why has man become the most dangerous animal? Doesn't man understand that if the forests and the animals don't co-exist with humans, the balance of the ecosystem will be endangered?

The film starts with Yuvraj (or 'Yuvi', for short) (Swini Khara in the Original Hindi Version) saying that he lost his father, Sultan (Sunil Shetty) in the morning, but doesn't want to lose his home at any cost. The film carries a flashback of the morning with Yuvi and Sultan playing in the forest and Sultan teaching self-defence to Yuvi while his mother, Begum (Urmila Matondkar) enters. The two mock her for her too much caring attitude towards son that gets Begum angry and she goes. Soon, Begum forgives Sultan and Yuvraj (following a song - her one weakness). However, while coming back, a whole pack of bulldozers come from nowhere and proceed to demolish the surrounding jungle. Begum manages to escape, but Yuvi and Sultan are trapped. The two try to protest bulldozers but land at a site in the forest where they see all the trees missing. In a bid to save Yuvi, Sultan catches Yuvi in his mouth and tosses him to Begum. However, he himself is killed by a human wielding a shotgun, making the whole forest a large enemy of the humans. A talk happens with attendants of all the animals in the area. Many believe that leaving their homes is the only way to survive; however, Bajrangi, a monkey (Govinda), says that he would beat out the wits of those men with his so-called " vanarsena”  - Marela (Sanjai Mishra) and Bharela (Saurabh Shukla), but Bagga the bear (Boman Irani) advises him to talk to humans and Bajrangi asks whether there is anyone who knows the language of humans. A white bird, seemingly a pigeon, Hawa Hawaai (Deepak Dobriyal) pipes up, saying he knows someone who knows both animal and human languages. Yuvi meets the white bird the next day, and asks who is the one he said about. The white bird says the animal he spoke of is Alex (Akshaye Khanna), a parrot who lives with a director, Vikram Khosla. Bajrangi, his "army" of two monkeys, Hawa Hawaai, Bagga and Yuvi go and kidnap the parrot and convince him to go to Delhi with them to talk to the parliament and save their land. Initially refusing, Alex agrees to go to Delhi. Begum, Bagga, Bajrangi and his army board a train to Delhi from Mumbai. After some time Yuvi joins them and Alex refuses to continue until Bajrangi drops his weapons, which he reluctantly does after Bagga hangs him upside down. They then reach Gujarat with guidance of road from Raju, a bat. In Gujarat they meet flamingos and a couple who give them shelter in their homes. One of the flamingos strictly advises them not to cross the banyan tree to avoid the wolf Kaalia (Prem Chopra) and his gang. But Bajrangi goes there and ties Alex using a rope for Kaalia to kill him so that no one can doubt him. Yuvi spots Bajrangi and confronts him but they are spotted by Kaalia. Begum arrives in time to save them.

After this incident Alex pretends to have lost his voice. The animals consult a doctor  Jadibuti   Baba  a turtle who prescribes some ayurvedic medicines of sandalwood, rose, guava to recover Alex's voice, claiming that he has hypertension, stress and high blood pressure. Bajrangi wholeheartedly does the hard work, sometimes himself getting injured. One day he gets to know that Alex was just pretending and chases him leading himself to inadvertently hit a beehive. All the animals run with bees chasing them. A thrilling experience of trains follows after which Bajrangi tells Alex how guilty he feels of thinking to kill him. Alex also realizes how selfish he was and decides to help animals to help them to justice. Begum tells that no one is going to Delhi after listening to a tiger's story of how he only survived death at a human's hands by being a coward and forsaking his old ways; thankfully, following a pep talk and seeing Sultan's spirit and Yuvi who inspires them, Begum changes her mind and with renewed hope, proceeds to Delhi. They finally reach Delhi and tell their message through Alex to the Prime Minister of the country that they want peace between humans and animals and how this young little cub Yuvi inspired all of them to go to Delhi despite all the incidents. In the last scene, it is shown the jungle is saved courtesy of a shared land act (with the area being called the "Sanjay Gandhi National Park-Borivali") and all are happy and settled. The film ends with all animals settled in the Jungle with Yuvi seeing his father's spirit and Begum together happy and Yuvi smiling.

Some people noted that the character Alex the Parrot's lack of flight skills and fondness of the domesticated life was similar to the character Blu from Blue Sky Studios'  Rio . Others felt that the story of Yuvi's father's death and his later appearance as a ghost was ripping off the story of Simba from Disney's The Lion King. The film was also widely criticized for its unoriginal plot, many believing the "Animal road-trip" and "stop the humans" storylines to be too similar to Dreamwork's  Madagascar  and Warner Brothers'  Happy Feet,  respectively. Despite criticism, it was awarded National Film Award for Best Animated Film at the 60th National Film Awards with a citation "Animation and animal kingdom come together in showcasing the enormous significance of harmonious cohabitation of humans and nature. State-of the-Art Indian technology employed in this film should make us proud!".

DELHI SAFARI

"environmentally correct".

What You Need To Know:

(PaPa, EEE, PCPC, BB, C, V, S, AA, M) Strong mixed worldview with very strong environmentalist worldview as animals to Delhi to plead with the humans to stop destroying the wildlife with pollution and industrialism and share the world with them, with a politically correct attitude and some strong moral elements as the animals show principles such as reconciliation, forgiveness, redemption, and sacrifice; no obscenities or profanities, but there is toilet humor such as use of the word “poop” and implied urinating by monkey; Sultan shot and killed, and monkey pulls out guns on other animals and takes out a pocketknife to kill parrot character; implied romantic involvement between a parrot’s owner and an actress; no nudity; no real alcohol use, but monkey and parrot do get slightly drunk from coconut milk; no smoking or drugs; and lying, kidnapping a bird, some animals plot to kill others, but their plans are always thwarted, monkey leader is bad role model, and housing developers destroy homes of wildlife.

More Detail:

DELHI SAFARI is an animated movie from India featuring the voices of Western actors about the journey of seven jungle animals on a quest to Delhi to fight for their habitat.

Yuvi (Tara Strong) is the spunky leopard cub, who catalyzes the group to travel to Delhi to speak to the Indian parliament. His mother, Begum (Vanessa Williams), leads the group and keeps everyone in line and on course, especially Bajrangi, a naughty monkey who believes in only war and hate for the humans. Alex (voice of Tom Kenny), on the other hand, is a parrot pampered by humans. He loves the movie, music and media culture he experiences everyday from his cage until he joins the other animals on their mission. Bagga (Brad Garrett) is the peacekeeping bear and gentle giant also a part of their quest.

With the exception of Alex the parrot, the jungle is their home. It’s being destroyed by land developers, machines, pollution, and other acts of mankind. The animals bravely go on a long journey to face the unknown to stop the humans from destroying all that they love.

DEHLI SAFARI is a 3D animation of fair to good quality. The movie has both an Indian and English version. In addition to the all-star cast already mentioned, the English version also features the voices of Christopher Lloyd, Jason Alexander, Jane Lynch, and Cary Elwes. Color, music and montage are used creatively during the movie. As such, the movie is quite similar to THE LION KING and the MADAGASCAR movies. However, some of the songs are too long, and, at times, the music and lyrics seem to be out of sync.

Also, it’s not always clear who the protagonist or central character is. It seems to be Yuvi in the beginning, but as the story progresses, it becomes either Alex or Bajrangi. Alex realizes he has a connection and responsibility to his jungle heritage. Bajrangi realizes that revenge is not the answer. He and his nemesis, Alex, seem to be the two characters with the greatest transformation during the film.

In addition, there are a few notes of moral caution with DELHI SAFARI.

First, there is an implied romance between the parrot’s owner, a filmmaker, and an actress. The filmmaker offers more screen time to the clueless actress as a way to seduce her. Alex the parrot perceived this as great entertainment as he videotapes them from his cage until Bajrangi the monkey cuts in with a cleverly timed interruption. Later, it is further implied that the actress accepted the filmmaker’s advances as we see only her arm stroke his face as if she’s laying across his lap as he sits and watches TV.

Besides this, there are a few other questionable moments involving Bajrangi. It’s implied that he urinates in a field. Also, he contemplates various ways to kill Alex or being killed by Bagga the bear. Later, Alex and he get drunk on coconut milk.

Ultimately, DELHI SAFARI has a mixed pagan worldview. There are some strong moral, slightly redemptive themes, such as forgiveness, reconciliation, humility, faith, and love. Knowing or finding one’s purpose is another concept built into the story. The naughty monkey, who believes that war and fighting is the best way to solve problems, portrays most of the immoral or negative themes. DELHI SAFARI also has a strong environmentalist theme throughout it. The environmentalist worldview is tied into the movie from the beginning to the end, as the animals face their fear of losing their jungle home to land developers, industrialization and mankind. The music and an animation montage speaks to the importance of protecting the environment. This content is somewhat politically correct. Thus, it sounds like some of the Neo-Marxist claptrap coming from those on the left who want to use environmental to expand government control and take away true liberty and real stewardship.

All in all, DELHI SAFARI is an enjoyable animated movie. However, the toilet humor and mature content don’t advance the plot. The two most objectionable scenes are the naughty monkey urinating in the field as he plots a coup with his two stooges and the scene between the parrot’s owner and the actress. In today’s society, these may seem like subtle or trivial points to make. However, including such edgy material for children’s viewership does more to break the movie than make the movie. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution.

The movie starts out in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, India. Yuvi, a small leopard cub, begins to cry about losing his home. The actual movie then starts with Yuvi and his dad, Sultan, play-fighting in the forest. Yuvi's mom Begum, shows up and gets angry at both of them for roughhousing. Later that day, bulldozers come and start ramming trees down while chasing after Sultan and his cub. Begum arrives at the scene when the hunters get ready to shoot the leopard and his cub. Sultan ends up picking Yuvi up with his mouth and throws him toward Begum for safety, then he pounces and roars at one of the hunters before getting shot.

All of the animals mourn Sultan's death and suggest moving somewhere else. Yuvi goes to visit the mail-owl the next morning, and is accidentally told about a parrot who lives in the city. The parrot's name is Alex and is said to speak a total of 5 human languages and can possibly speak to the humans. Bajrangi the monkey is obsessed with destroying humanity and making all humans suffer to the point where they'll go extinct. He is loaded with firearm and weapons and is determined to kill humans. However, Yuvi and the mail-owl manipulate Bajrangi into going into helping them go into the city to find Alex the parrot. Baga the guru bear, Yuvi the leopard cub, Bajrangi the monkey(along with his two monkey sidekicks Marella and Barella) decide to travel to the city to find Alex the parrot without Begum knowing. They reach the modern home of a Bollywood movie director and find his parrot recording his owner's girlfriend, which then Bajrangi grabs Alex by the neck and takes him back to the jungle.

Begum gets angry at Baga for taking Yuvi to the city where he could've gotten killed, but she is even more angry at Bajrangi and Alex for bickering throughout the whole scene. Alex shows to be a cunning parrot who could care less about the status of the wildlife. While ranting, he accidentally mentions Delhi, India's capital. The entire group of animals gets curious and Alex starts refusing to help them. A bulldozer suddenly comes almost running them over before they escaped.

Alex the parrot, Bajrangi the monkey and his sidekicks, Baga the bear, and Begum the leopardess set off on the path to Delhi, leaving Yuvi behind while singing "Delhi Safari, hey!". They climb onto a train which starts going north to Gujarat. During the night, all the animals were sound asleep except Bajrangi. Bajrangi starts thinking of killing Alex in his sleep. He attempts to avoid Baga's wrath by slowly opening the noisy machete knife in order to kill Alex. Right when he holds the knife up in the air in excitement, Alex wakes up and starts screaming. The train immediately stops at a station and people outside start panicking, and a woman starts yelling that she saw a leopard. Thinking that Alex's scream gave them away, the group then wakes up and quickly hide behind the crates. Out of nowhere, Yuvi opens the door and slowly peeks in asking if they're there before the humans start shouting that they see the animal. The humans then start running toward the boxcar seeing nothing there and going back to usual business. The animals sneaked out of the boxcar into a field before the train went off into the distance.

Begum then starts questioning Yuvi on why he gave them away. Yuvi claims he saw his dad appear to him and tell him to go with them, while Baga claims it was just a dream. Alex starts to re-enact a court scene accusing Bajrangi of trying to kill him, in which the two start quarelling. Begum then gets angry, sternly tells Bajrangi "not one more word from you", and starts threatening Alex that he'll never reach home without them. Baga then convinces Bajrangi to reluctantly dump all of his weapons. They then encounter a bat named "Raju" who cues a song showing them a way to Delhi. The group reaches the desert, and by this point Alex is suicidal and tries to make Bajrangi squeeze his neck. A moment later, they come across a small abandonned temple full of adult British Sikh flamingos who openly welcome them to their home in the form of a song. Alex and Bajrangi do a duel during the song and Alex ends up winning. The main flamingo couple are the ones that mostly do all the talking, the husband advises the group not to go near Kalia's cave full of vicious cannibal hyenas. Bajrangi pretends to be unconscious on the ground while hearing all of this until he eerily opens one of his eyes after the husband flamingo gave the warning.

It's midnight and all the animals are asleep. Sultan then appears to Yuvi and wakes him up. Sultan warns Yuvi of enemies being at work during that hour, and that enemy being "one of their own". They start hearing Bajrangi laughing as he ties Alex to a rock at the dark caves Yuvi loudly questions Bajrangi and panicks, but before they escape Kalia the hyena appears and intimidates the two. Before they know it, they are surrounded by a whole clan of hyenas. Yuvi begs for Kalia to let them go, Kalia replies saying "if you can kill us, you're free to go!". Yuvi's mom glances over the rock and starts roaring over the cave. Kalia grabs Yuvi by the neck in order to scare Begum, but Yuvi bites Kalia's paw and runs to his mom. While Kalia is crying, ranting, and insulting the cub, Begum angrily goes up to Kalia while he begs for mercy. She then hits him to the ground and all the hyenas run off and whimper. Bajrangi starts yelling taunts at them while they run off, right there is when Begum demands that Bajrangi leaves for good.

While Begum is scolding Bajrangi for "trying to silence our only voice of speaking to the humans", Yuvi interrupts by saying Alex lost his voice due to screaming. The whole group loses hope and looks at Bajrangi as the reason for ruining everything. In the morning they are still at the cave, trying many treatments while Bajrangi is loaded with guilt.

The group goes back to the temple, and seeks help from the flamingos. The flamingo couple instead starts bickering about their reviews in major cities of the world. Begum asks again if they know how to fix Alex's voice, in which they recommend "Jatti Buti Baba", a wise old tortoise who lives in a cavern, and hasn't been seen in years. While Bajrangi is enthusiatic in finding this "holy man", they eventually reach a shell where Bajrangi sticks his head in the butt area of the holy turtle. He then comes out of his shell and advises them to gather natural resources in order to restore hsi voice. The entire group glances at Bajrangi to do all these tasks since he caused the problem. Bajrangi is determined to heal and serve Alex like a slave no matter the cost.

As Bajrangi takes on each task to gather sandalwood and roses, Alex rudely sabotages Bajrangi in which he gets hurt and barely avoids losing the items he collected. Bajrangi then climbs onto a tree over a waterfall in order to get figs for Alex. Alex discards every fig that Bajrangi throws to Alex. Nearing the end of the task, Alex deliberatly points to the fig on the weak branch. Bajrangi refused until Alex started to fake choke as if he's in pain. Bajrangi slowly climbs over the weak branch before it breaks, causing him to fall into the waterfall and get revived by Baga.

Later that night, Bajrangi's former sidekicks come to him behind bushes denouncing him as their leader. Bajrangi starts scolding them on how they are not good followers, they left before after he kept telling them to get lost.

The next morning, Alex is seen tripping Bajrangi into the dirt while he relentlessly stays by Alex's side as a servant. Bajrangi gets back up and keeps his cool, he decides to start telling the story of Lord Hanuman. When Bajrangi asks what Lord Hanuman says before he fights any demon, Alex sees a pretty female parrot and accidentally says "Wow, what a hottie". Bajrangi then repeats "Wow, what a hottie" but then immediately starts getting angry at Alex. Bajrangi starts chasing Alex through the field. The group notices and starts running after them. Bajrangi then pounces on Alex from the back and rams him into a tree. He picks up a rock and starts walking towards Alex complaining about his suffering and demands he repeats what he said. Alex then asks "What did Hanuman say when things got really bad?". Bajrangi answers "Hail Lord Ram." and accidentally hits the rock onto a beehive right above them.

The bees, which are styled to look like the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom, start chasing after Bajrangi and Alex. The bees get into a helicopter formation and start chasing the entire group into a canyon and shooting bees at them, Baga is stung in the butt several times. They run into a mine and shut the door to hold the bees off for a few minutes. They all jump onto a minecart and ride through the cave like a rollercoaster. Begum starts badgering Bajrangi until Alex finally screams “SHUT UP!”, revealing that he never lost his voice in the first place.

Positive Messages

Delhi Safari encourages wildlife preservation and environmental awareness of animal habitats. Teamwork and friendship are also portrayed positively -- the group sticks together even through tough times.

Positive Role Models

The leopard mom will do anything to save her cub, and the bear is the voice of reason. The parrot and the monkey's truce and eventual friendship teaches that opposites can still become pals. The cub makes everyone think of more than themselves.

Violence & Scariness

The leopard father is killed by a construction crew (he's shot and falls to his death). The intense death happens in slow motion, with the mom and cub watching. The monkey is basically a warmonger for the majority of the movie and has a lot of weapons. He even wears a warrior-style headband and attempts to injure or kill Alex the parrot.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

There's a brief scene of a human man bringing home his date in what appears to be a "casting couch" situation. The producer puts his hand on his date's legs and says he's considering making her part bigger. She's wearing a midriff-baring top and a miniskirt. But just as they're about to kiss, an animal obscures the PDA. Alex says a female bird is "hot."

Language includes "stupid," "coward," and "dumb," as well as some fart jokes and an exclamation of "good God!"

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Jokes about how a coconut milk must've been old, because the monkey and parrot start slurring their words. Alex says he feels like his owner when he comes home late and starts tripping.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Delhi Safari is an animated talking-animal adventure that includes a couple of frightening scenes and some innuendo. Most disturbing is an intense scene in which a father leopard is killed by a real estate development's construction crew; the scene is in slow motion and the mother and cub witness the death. Aasi monkey is a weapons-carrying warmonger who attempts to injure or kill a couple of different animals and wants to declare war on the humans. One scene shows a man putting his hand on his somewhat scantily clad date's legs and implying that he'll reward her for fooling around with him. Language includes insults like "dumb," "stupid," and some scatological jokes. Like most animal films, there's a strong message about caring for the environment and wildlife preservation. Inappropriate content for an animated film

What's the story.

In an Indian jungle, a leopard family reigns supreme until the father leopard (voiced by Cary Elwes ) is killed by a real estate developer's construction crew. In response to the news that their leader is dead and their habitat is about to be displaced, mother leopard Begum ( Vanessa Williams ) and her cub join Bajrangi, a militant monkey ( Carlos Alazraqui ); Bagga, a sensible bear ( Brad Garrett ); and Alex, a parrot that can "talk human" ( Tom Kenny ) to travel to Delhi and protest the development. Along the way, the group overcomes obstacles and strife between Alex and Bajrangi.

Is It Any Good?

There are too many disconnects in DELHI SAFARI to make it a must-see. Because it's dubbed into English, the sound and the mouth movements don't quite sync, and it's more noticeable and distracting here than in other dubbed films. The scene where the father leopard is killed is unnecessarily drawn out and extremely intense and upsetting. The animation is outdated, and some of the songs are pretty forgettable -- though the flamingo song and the end-credits routine are fun, Bollywood-style numbers.

On the bright side, the movie's eco-friendly messages are positive, but those are available in most animal tales. With so many homages and references to other animal movies (particularly The Lion King and Madagascar ), this Indian import seems more like a copycat with a few Bollywood songs thrown in to the mix. This just isn't original enough to bother with unless your kids adore anything and everything featuring talking wild animals.

  • Los Angeles Times Gary Goldstein A painless, if only mildly inventive, animated comedy.
  • New York Daily News Miriam Bale The film is without wit and, sadly, entirely forgettable.

  • New York Times Neil Genzlinger It shamelessly rips off much better animated movies. What kind of lesson is that for our young people?
  • Reeling Reviews Robin Clifford The "Save the Environment" and "Share the World" themes of "Delhi Safari" will keep the adults involved in this nice story that is chock full of snappy, nature-friendly songs that will delight the kids.
  • Common Sense Media Sandie Angulo Chen Bollywood numbers can't save derivative wild-animal tale.
  • Slant Magazine Kalvin Henely A much better way to strike home the same green message, while also having more fun, would be to just skip this movie and take your kids to a national park.
  • Reeling Reviews Laura Clifford ...U.S. audiences, at least, are bound to find the animation here subpar for a theatrical release.
  • Variety Joe Leydon Blandly unremarkable.
