Image Grids

The /imagine command produces a grid of low-resolution image options based on your prompt. Use the buttons under each image grid to create variations of an image, upscale an image, or rerun the last Midjourney Bot action.

Upscale Buttons

U1 U2 U3 U4 buttons separate an image from the image grid, allowing you easily download that image or use additional tools like Zoom Out , or Pan .

Upscaled Images

Make Variations: creates a variation of the upscaled image and generates a new grid of four options.

How to Add Midjourney Bot to Your Discord Server

Midjourney is arguably the best AI tool for Discord to generate art.

You can type keywords and the AI will generate 4 images based on them.

You can then upscale or generate variations of those images.

An example of keywords is “pancakes, delicious, glistening, detailed”.

Instead of joining the Midjourney Discord server , you can add the bot to your own server.

That way, you won’t have to constantly scroll up and down to see your generated images.

Here are 4 steps to add the Midjourney bot to your Discord server:

Step 1: Join the Midjouney Discord server

Step 2: invite the midjourney bot to your server, step 3: add the midjourney bot to your server, step 4: use /imagine followed by keywords.

Firstly, you need to join the Midjourney Discord server.

Here’s the invite link for it: https://discord.com/invite/midjourney .

The Discord server contains the Midjourney bot which you can invite to your server.

You can find it in the list of members.

• Open the Midjourney Discord server.
• Go to the #newbies-1 channel.
• Select the profile icon.
• Select the Midjourney Bot.

The Midjourney Bot can be found in the list of members on most channels.

This includes #announcements, #status, #rules, and more.

• Select “Add to Server”.
• Choose the server that you want to add the Midjourney bot to.
• Select “Continue”.
• Select “Authorize”.

Currently, the bot can only be used on servers with less than 1000 members.

Authorizing the bot will allow it to read and send messages.

Do note that you can only add bots to a Discord server if you are an admin.

If you don’t have a server yet, you need to create one.

After you’ve created one, you’ll be able to add the Midjourney bot to it.

• Use the /imagine command.
• E.g. /imagine pancakes and waffles.
• Wait for 60 seconds.

If you see the “Midjourney Bot just showed up!” message, it means that you’ve successfully added the bot to your server.

Now, you can use it to create art from your imagination.

To do so, you need to use the /imagine command followed by keywords.

After 60 seconds, the Midjourney bot will generate 4 images based on your keywords.

Do note that each user only has 25 free queries.

You can buy the $10 membership to have 200 queries or the $30 membership for unlimited queries.

Having the bot in your server will allow you to use it without any obstruction.

If you were to use the bot in the official Midjourney Discord server, you’ll have to constantly scroll up and down to see the generated images.

This is because there are too many people using the /imagine command.

If you don’t want the bot to be usable in a specific channel, you need to change the channel’s permissions.

To do so, go to the channel > Edit Channel > Permissions > @everyone > Uncheck “Use Application Commands”.

Although you can generate images with Midjourney by joining their official Discord server , it has over 16 million members. This makes it very difficult to generate AI art since your prompts get buried under hundreds of messages every minute.

However, you can invite Midjourney’s bot to your own Discord server if you have an active Midjourney subscription . This allows you to use the AI tool in a more private setting, and reap all the benefits it offers within your own server.

So, without further ado, let’s see how to add the Midjourney bot to Discord.

1. Enter the Official Midjourney Discord Server

The first step is to join the company’s official Discord server . Here is where you can find their bot: simply click on ‘Accept Invite’ to join the server.

2. Get a Midjourney Subscription

To use this bot, you’ll need a Midjourney subscription , which ranges from $10/month to $60/month. To subscribe, go to one of the #newbies channels, and use the /subscribe command.

3. Invite Midjourney Bot to Your Server

Now, look for the members’ list on the right side of the screen. There, you’ll see a user called ‘ Midjourney Bot ‘.

Once you find it, click on the profile. A new pop-up window will appear, where you’ll be able to click on ‘ Add to Server ‘.

Click on ‘ Continue ‘, then on ‘ Authorize ‘, solve the captcha, and that’s it. Now the Midjourney bot is in your Discord server.

Using the bot is very simple. You only need to write the command /imagine followed by any prompt you want. For example:

Midjourney is a fantastic AI art generator I’ve been using since August 2022. Since the beginning, I’ve been extremely impressed. While it didn’t quite stand up to DALL-E or some versions of Stable Diffusion, it was an open beta and you could use the images commercially if you wished to. But since then, they’ve come out with versions 3, 4, and more recently, version 5.1 of Midjourney, which has blown my socks off.

In all honesty, I can’t wait for Midjourney’s version 6.0 (which will be in the “/settings” denoted as “Midjourney version 6.0”) to come out, as I have a lot of silly plans to use the added features in the future.

Anyway, you’re likely here because you want to improve your Midjourney skills. Luckily, as we all know, it’s incredibly easy to use once you get it set up and running in Discord. Simply type in a basic text of what you want the AI art generator to create, wait up to a minute, and voila, you have a brand new piece of art that didn’t exist before.

This article will attempt to briefly explain every single command and function in Midjourney, and I’ll do my best to update it as more new functions come out. • /imagine  – Generates an image based on the given prompt
• /help  – Offers guidance and information about the MJ bot
• /info  – Shows your profile details, plan, and usage
• /private  – Keeps your jobs private (additional $20/month)

• /fast  – Provides quicker results at a cost
• /relax  – Free, slower image generation (Standard and Corporate plans only)

How to Use Midjourney’s Bot Commands and Instructions

This guide assumes you are already set up with Midjourney in Discord and discusses all of the various functions and commands you can use to interact with Midjourney’s AI image-generating software. Let’s jump in.

How do I use “/imagine”?

In Discord, type in “/imagine” then press <spacebar> either once or twice until a mini-pop-up that says “prompt” displays. Now you can type in any text you want to see for your desired image. After you’ve typed it, simply press enter and wait for it to compile.

What does the 🔄 refresh button do?

When you click the 🔄 refresh button, it will re-run the same submission again. When it does that, you can expect different results, of course. Sometimes they can be more or less related to the original image output, but that can often depend on the different settings you’re using. You can also click it more than once, which will run separate jobs.

Basically, if you want to iterate, hit the refresh button.

What does the U1 button mean?

After you’ve made an image, you’ll see a U1, U2, U3, U4 option underneath. In this case, the U stands for “upscale” and the number (1 to 4) stands for which image you want to select. Since the default option is to create 4 images with every new job or prompt, the numbers go from 1 to 4 and stand for their positioning.

So, if you hit U4, it would upscale the last image. Upscaling is simply making a more detailed image of the one you have, often either twice or four times the quality. Currently, the maximum resolution of an image in version 3 of Midjourney is 2048 x 2048. The default maximum size, unless changed, is set to 1664 x 1664 pixels.

Since Midjourney version 5.1 is still in beta, the maximum size it allows is 1024 x 1024.

They haven’t stated plans to change this, but know that the maximum file size is roughly 3MB, so all of the potential resolutions are based around that.

What does the V1 button mean?

Like the U1 button, the number in the V1, V2, V3, V4 buttons corresponds to which image you want to tinker with. The V in this case stands for “variations” and is how you can iterate images you want to look more like one of the specific selections. Midjourney creates four images in a box by default, and sometimes only one of them catches your eye, but it’s not quite there yet. That’s when you hit the V1 to V4 button and reiterate that image until you find a result you’re happy with.

What does “/info” do in Midjourney?

Using the “/info” command in Discord in the Midjourney bot shows all of your account information.

In particular, it shows your:

• Subscription  — which services you pay for, if it’s active or not, and when the account was renewed
• Which job mode you’re using  — You can choose fast (for faster images, duh) or relaxed, which don’t use up your “Fast Time”
• Fast Time Remaining  — how much “Fast Time” you have left on this month’s subscription cycle
• Visibility Mode  — if you don’t pay extra to have Private mode engaged on Midjourney, all of your images can be seen by the public (and you can see theirs in turn, too
• Lifetime Usage  — How many images and hours of computing time you’ve made since the beginning of this account, since this is my second account, I can’t see all of my previous work
• Relaxed Usage  — How many images and hours of computing time you’ve used in relaxed mode. Note, if you’re in relax mode, you can’t use the “Upscale to Max” function
• Metered Usage  — If you’ve run out of Fast Time and elect to continue using them within a single billing cycle, the additional images and hours of computing time you’ve spent money on will appear here
• Queued Jobs  — You can only queue up 7 additional jobs at any given point, giving a total limit of 10 jobs entered before you have to wait to run more, it will show you how many jobs you have remaining here after the original 3 “running jobs”
• Running Jobs  — You can have up to 3 jobs running at any given time (3 commands entered) with 7 queued jobs after

What does “/invite” do?

You can generate an invitation link, which is sent to your DM (direct message) folder where you can then send it to a friend or someone to join the specific server you’re using. As an added boost, it gives some free computing time to spend on Midjourney.

What does “/help” do?

Typing in “/help” will bring up a list of resources made by the Midjourney team to help you navigate the software.

What does “/subscribe” do in Midjourney?

Typing in “/subscribe” brings up a link to go to Midjourney’s subscription page. Right now they have a basic membership for $10 a month, a standard membership for $30, an additional private mode for $20 a month, and a corporate membership for $600 a year.

What does “/fast” and “/relax” mean in Midjourney?

By default, fast mode is turned on for new users. Essentially, it means your jobs and images will be created a lot faster than using the relax mode . But, the amount is limited according to your subscription plan. If you run out, you can choose to pay for incremental usage or switch to relax mode. In relax mode, you also can’t use the “upscale to max” function.

What does “/show” mean in Midjourney?

If you type in “/show” and type in the Job ID of any previous work you’ve made, it will bring up the image for you to see again, alongside the variation buttons.

What does “/private” and “/public” do in Midjourney?

Typing in either “/private” or “/public” simply toggles between the private and public mode for your images. As implied, private mode means only you (and potentially employees at Midjourney) can see your generated images, and public is anyone using Midjourney’s gallery.

What Are the Arrows in Midjourney? (Pan Feature)

The “Pan” feature allows you to expand your upscaled images in a specific direction—up, down, left, or right. Just click on the corresponding arrow beneath your image to pan. Currently, panning changes the aspect ratio to a 1:1 square format. This feature is under active development, so expect improvements soon.

What is the Remix Mode Function on Midjourney?

Remix Mode in Midjourney is an experimental feature designed to give you greater creative flexibility. It allows you to modify and tweak your existing images without having to start from scratch.

By activating Remix Mode , the behavior of the variation buttons (V1, V2, V3, V4) under your image grids changes, offering you the option to input new parameters or modify existing ones. This way, you can produce fresh variations of your image while retaining its original essence.

It’s compatible with Midjourney Model Versions 5, 5.1, and 5.2, but be cautious when using it with seeds, as it’s not fully compatible.

What does “- -h” and “- -w” do in Midjourney?

You can add in the “- -h” and “- -w” functions at the end of your prompt in Midjourney to adjust the height and width of the produced images. They were built to work in multiples of 64, which looks like this:

• 64, 128, 192, 256, 320, 384, 448, 512, 576, 640, 704, 768, 832, 896, 960, 1024

Note, they have a maximum value of 1024 or you’ll get an error. It’s also advised by Midjourney to instead use the “- -ar” function .

What does “- -seed” do in Midjourney?

Using the “- -seed” function is a way to kind of keep your new images similar to the older ones you specify. When you run a prompt that ends with “- -seed” it marks that as a special generation. If you then run another prompt and type in the same “- -seed” number, it will use the same “noise” it used to create your original image, making another image very similar to the original.

For example, you could type in:

And it will mark that output as being special. You can then recall it anytime by typing in “- -seed” with the same number, again. Note, the numbers have to be a whole number and between 0 and 4294967295.

Every image generates a seed, but if you don’t specify it, it’s random and not shown visibly. If you want to see the value, you can use the envelope emoji ✉️ button to get the values sent to your DM.

Using the “- -sameseed” function works the same way, except it applies the seed to all 4 generated images in the grid.

What does “- -no” do in Midjourney?

If you want to exclude something from your image, append the “- -no” function to the end of your prompts. It’s called negative prompting, and you can use similar commands in Google search, too.

For example, “- -frogs” in a prompt of “/imagine a wonderful pond” would try to reduce or eliminate any images of a frog appearing. It can be finicky though and I find it doesn’t work a lot of the time.

What does “- -iw” do in Midjourney?

The “- -iw” command in Midjourney stands for “image weight.” It sets the relative weight of the image to the text and the default is 0.25. Essentially, do you want the original image you uploaded to be more or less the same after the next prompt? If you want it closer to the original image, choose a higher value, but the default is 0.25.

How to upload images to use in Midjourney?

If you want Midjourney to play around based on an image you have lying around or on the internet, it’s a bit tricky to get the hang of.

Let’s say you like these ostriches from Wikipedia:

The only problem? The ostriches are far too skinny! We want to make them fat.

Now, make sure you have the webpage with the image open, here’s the Ostriches .

Now you should right-click on the picture of the ostriches in Wikipedia and click the “Copy image address” option.

Then go back to Discord and Midjourney and copy paste the address into the bar (don’t use any “/” commands), then press enter.

The image will then be uploaded into Discord after a few seconds and will show as a response when it’s done. Now the next important part, click open the image so it kind of pops up. Then right-click that image and select the “Copy image address” AGAIN.

Now you’re ready to use “/imagine”, so type that in, then copy-paste the new image address (this time it will start with “media.discord” etc etc).

And just make sure you type something, anything, after this image address and Midjourney should start working on modifying your existing image for you. You can also paste more than one image, too.

In my case, I pasted in the ostriches image and typed “fat” after in the prompt, and it popped out this very odd result:

What does the “MJ version 5” or “MJ version 5.1” button do?

If you’ve opened up the “/settings” function in Discord in the Midjourney bot, you’ll be confronted with a lot of options. The main one is at the top, where you get to choose which version of Midjourney you want to use.

The newest versions (Midjourney version 5.1 at the time of this writing) are often in beta mode and will have restrictions on what functions you can use and often a lower maximum image quality. That being said, the sheer quality and improvement of the images the latest versions produce keep getting more and more awesome.

What does the “Niji version 4” or “Niji version 5” button do?

The Niji version mode in Midjourney is their AI model trained on creating anime art, and version 5 is the latest one. If you’re into anime, it’s a pretty great feature. One of my friends uses it all the time for a different reason, she finds the images are far more suitable for kids and teaching!

Here’s an example using the Niji version 5 in Midjourney of a “happy apple”:

What does the “stylize” button do in Midjourney?

Using the “- -stylize” function in Midjourney essentially changes how artistic or crazy the resulting images will be. You can also set these to be automatic in the “/settings” function, where they have “Style low” and other options. Lastly, you can use a shortened version of the command which is “- -s”.

The numbers have to be between 625 and 60000, with the default being 2500. Using the full 60,000 number can result in some crazy cool (but far away from your text) images. Try it out!

What does the “- -quality” function do in Midjourney?

Using the “- -quality” function determines how much computing time is spent to create your image. You can also use a shortcut for the function, “- -q”.

You can use the values 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 to set this, but the default is 1. So for example, if you used “- -q 0.25”, your image would be rougher but 4 times faster and cheaper, in terms of computing time.

What does the “- -chaos” function do?

If you type in “- -chaos” with a number between 0 to 100 after, you’ll change how crazy the output is. Lower numbers are more normal, per see, with values closer to 100 being more and more unusual based on the text input.

What does the “- -stop” function do in Midjourney?

You can stop any job at a percentage of completion by typing in “- -stop” and a number between 10 to 100 (think of it as 10% to 100% completed). This function doesn’t work with upscaled images yet.

What does the “- -video” function do in Midjourney?

If you type in “- -video”, Midjourney will create a mini progress video and send it to you in the DM folder. Note, you have to react with the envelope emoji ✉️ button to get the link to the video. This isn’t available with upscaled images yet.

How do I use “/describe”?

This function is pretty cool. Essentially, you can upload an image and it breaks it down into a prompt (kind of the opposite of the /imagine function).

You first type in “/describe” and press enter , then either click the box in Discord or click and drag an image into the box. Then press enter, wait a little bit, and it pumps out 4 different descriptions for your image.

Pretty neat for helping you understand how Midjourney actually sees our pictures (and for helping you improve your prompts).

How do I use the permutation prompt function?

A newer feature on Midjourney is the permutation prompts where you can run multiple ‘jobs’ at once (each job is the 4 picture output you usually see).

It’s probably best illustrated with an example:

“/imagine a big fluffy {bird, bear, human, panda}”

If you typed in the above, it would run 4 jobs (#1 would be “a big fluffy bird”, #2 would be “a big fluffy bear”, etc). It also asks you if you want to run that many jobs before going through with it. Pretty good for the uber-imagers out there.

How do I use the repeat function?

This function is good for those trying to really nail down a specific image and need a huge number of iterations. The repeat function does exactly what its name implies — it runs multiple jobs at once.

Just simply type “- -repeat 3” if you wanted it to run the same prompt 3 times in a row (or 1 or 2 or 234028340240, you get the idea).

How do I use “/ask”?

This one is kind of under the radar and I think it’s to help you use Midjourney if you have any questions. I asked it what the /ask command did and it said to go check out the official prompt guide with a link. Maybe it’s just attached to a basic chatbot or something more advanced.

How do I use “/blend”?

This one is a bit tricky but has high potential for being pretty useful. You have to upload 2 (or up to 6) images that you want to ‘blend’ together and also add a prompt at the end. Remember, you can copy-paste images (doesn’t always work), click and drag them, or copy the URL of an image and paste it. The outputs can be a bit finicky but I’m having fun trying to blend existing styles into new work with some success so far.

Midjourney beta: how to use the ai bot to create your own art.

Midjourney Beta is a promising new AI bot that uses Discord commands along with users' design ideas to produce artistic images. Here's how it works.

People looking for an opportunity to dip their toe in art generation through artificial intelligence may have heard about Midjourney Beta and wondered how it works. Much like other AI image generators, it is designed to accept a design prompt or idea in the form of a phrase from a user and use it as inspiration to create captivating pictures. However, instead of running through its own website or mobile app, it is hosted through Discord , a popular chat app.

The addicting pastime of creating unique idea prompts for AI bots to use for art generation was popularized by DALL-E mini, an AI project that recently went viral because users started using the platform to produce hysterically funny concepts with a lot of meme potential. Many AI art generator apps offering additional editing features rose to fame. What seems to set Midjourney Beta apart is the air of exclusivity it seems to project since the AI bot can only be accessed through Discord. However, the community of users the project has amassed on the chat platform thus far takes center stage, along with the ease of use made possible by the app's simple command features.

Those interested in giving Midjourney Beta a whirl need to have an active Discord account. Using a computer or mobile device where they are logged into Discord, go to the Midjourney website and hit 'Join the beta.' This will pull up the Midjourney Discord channel — hit 'Join Midjourney' to gain access to the AI art generation bot — wherein newcomers are given 25 free creation credits to start. Once admitted into the community, find one of the Midjourney Discord #newbies channels available from the sidebar. These channels will contain the Midjourney Bot that does the actual AI image generation. If none are visible, restart the Discord app. Once in the appropriate channel, type '/imagine' into the text field. This should trigger a list of slash commands frequently used in the channel. Next, pick the '/imagine prompt' option. Do note that this particular slash command will only work in channels containing the bot (such as newcomer rooms), so users need to make sure they are in the right place. Next, start typing a string of descriptive keywords for the AI to use as a basis for the art to generate. Finally, press 'Enter' or send the message to finalize the image generation request to the Midjourney Bot. It will take the AI around sixty seconds to generate four image options using the design idea provided.

Midjourney Beta Features That'll Improve Your Art

Along with the four images, a set of buttons should appear. 'U1' through 'U4' are 'upscaling' controls that can resize the chosen image to around 1024 x 1024 pixels. Hitting one of the U buttons will provide additional edit options, such as generating new images, upscaling to a larger resolution, and redoing an upscale attempt. 'V1' through 'V4' are 'variation' buttons that can generate an additional set of four images using one selected from the original four as the basis in terms of composition and overall style . Do note that using any of these buttons will use up one of the 25 free creation credits each time. To check how many are left, type '/info' in the text field.

To pick and download a final AI-generated image, click on one to enlarge it to full size. Then on a desktop, save the generated art by right-clicking it and choosing 'Save image.' On a mobile device, tap the image, then hit the download icon in the top-right corner. The upscaled image, as well as the four grid images generated, will immediately be available to view on the user's Midjourney gallery, which will be accessible when they are signed in to Discord. Additionally, users can also get the Midjourney Bot to send any of the generated images via direct message by pressing the react button on one of the bot's messages that contains the finished product and using an envelope emoji. How to use Midjourney

M idjourney is an incredibly popular AI image generator. One which became so popular that it had to stop its free trials after several deepfakes of real-life people began circulating - including Donald Trump. But despite its fully paid subscription model, it still remains one of the top used generators with a wide variety of styles and types.

There's even an official discord that's used to facilitate the image generation. Due to that, it can be tricky to figure out how to properly use the tool, but this guide will lead you through the process. And once you understand how to do it, it'll become like second nature to create your own images.

Steps for how to use Midjourney

• Join the Discord server
• Complete the tutorial
• Make an account
• Start creating images or breaking down images into text

Step by step guide - Signing up for Midjourney

1. join the official discord server.

You first need to join the official Discord, which can be found here . You either need to make a brand new Discord account or sign in to your existing Discord account.

2. Complete the tutorial

Once you join the Discord server, there's an optional tutorial that the Midjourney bot will run by you. However, it's a great way to introduce yourself to the basic functions.

3. Choose your subscription plan

After the tutorial and at any time by going into a Discord channel and prompting, you can choose your payment plan . Midjourney used to offer a free trial but now the minimum subscription pricing is $10 per month for the Basic Plan.

There's also a Standard Plan for $30, the Pro Plan for $60, and the Mega Plan for $120. Each tier offers a progressively faster GPU time as well as maximum concurrent jobs, while the higher tiers offer other features like relaxed GPU time and stealth mode.

Final thoughts

Midjourney is a unique experience in terms of AI image generators, as it actively builds a community around the creation of images. And though it has a higher learning curve than other AI generators, the level of customization and sheer range of kinds of images make it more than worth the effort.

However, one aspect of Midjourney that could be throttling its growth potential is that there's no free trial. Currently, there's work trying to find a proper balance between allowing free subscriptions and preventing abuse but as of now, you need to pay. And for those who can't afford such, they'll most likely move onto free generators instead.

Updated 4/3/2023 : Midjourney is now up to the fifth evolution of its model, and the latest results are jaw-droppingly beautiful, with much less prompt engineering required. The interface is still awful, but there are indications that they company might be working on a real website to replace the current Discord interface.

If you want AI-generated images for your book covers, blog posts, and social media shares — and who doesn’t? — the gold standard used to be OpenAI’s Dall-E 2. But Midjorney is now much, much better for book authors looking to create stunning graphics for their book covers or blog posts — and your first 25 images are free.

You can see some recent image examples on the official Midjourney showcase .

The first 25 Midjourney images are free, and then the basic plan is $10 a month for 200 images. That’s a darn good deal for the kind of images it produces. But I recommend going for the $30-a-month plan and using the “/relax” command to get unlimited images. That’s the plan I’m on because I just can’t stop playing with it.

The big downside? You have to use a Discord server to place your requests. If you know and like Discord, that may not be an obstacle.

But I have used Discord a lot. There’s a virtual world conference I help organize every year, and we’ve been using Discord for it. And I hate it. I find the interface all but impossible to use.

But if you’re up for it, go to the Midjourney website and click on the “Join the beta” button in the middle. Once you go through the sign-up process and get on the Discord server, you’ll be randomly assigned to a newbie channel. There’s help guide about this , but it was remarkably unhelpful. For example, it told me to check my profile to find out what my newbie channel was and I never did find this info.

There are several official guides, such as this Quick Start Guide . Unfortunately, it had little in common with my own actual experience using the app.

Mostly I just randomly messed around until some “newbie” channels showed up in my sidebar. I couldn’t even tell you what I did to get them to come up. It might have been just due to a page refresh. Then I clicked on one of them, typed /imagine and then the text of my prompt.

I submitted a few prompts, then it took me half an hour to find the results because hundreds of other people submitted their prompts while my prompts were processed, and my prompts scrolled far off the screen. I recommend making a note of the exact time when you submit a prompt so you can find it more easily later.

Your prompts will also appear outside of Discord, on Midjourney app page . However, other than downloading the images, you don’t get the rest of the functionality. To upscale an image, or generate different versions of the image, you’ll need to go back to the Discord server.

Here’s the first result I got, for the prompt “space battle two spaceships lasers planet in background.”

That was back in August, using Midjourney version three.

Here are the results the same prompt gave me in January 2023, using the fourth generation of the Midjourney AI model:

What I found particularly interesting with the Discord server interface was the ability to look at other people’s prompts and see their results.

For example. searching for “space battle lasers” I found lots of inspiration images that had descriptive words in them that I wouldn’t have thought to use — words like “hyperdetailed,” “4k,” “trending,” “in the style of alphonse mucha” and “symmetry.”

Midjourney also has a guide to some optional parameters , which include width and height or aspect ratio. You can even include links to online images for the AI to use as inspiration. Full list of prompt guides is here .

I tried again with my space battle, this time with the prompt “photograph of epic space battle, spaceship shooting lasers, above a planet, starry sky, 4k, mixed media, trending –wallpaper –uplight.”

Again, that was back in August.

Here’s the same prompt in January, replacing “–wallpaper” with “–ar 3:2”, since the aspect ration options are more limited with version four:

Then I played around with a few medieval-themed prompts.

Some of the results were better than others — sometimes, they were very, very good.

I mean, look at the detail on this image:

Or in this image:

To use Midjourney to create book covers, use the “–ar 2:3” aspect ratio setting at the end of your prompt. And if you want a full-body illustration of your main character, use some words that refer to their footwear, or what they’re standing on, or add descriptions of things in the background. The trick to using this for making book covers is to have enough space in the image to put your text.

You can then also use an AI-powered upscaling tool, like this free Upscale Media tool from PixelBin , to improve the quality of the image even further.

The image below was generated by Midjourney with the prompt “photorealistic warrior alien woman on alien planet wearing space boots holding lazer weapon with several moons and space ship in the sky, blue and orange, highly detailed, futuristic –ar 2:3 –test –creative,” then upscaled to twice the size.

If you want even more options, type in “/settings” and play around with the style options — or turn on “Remix mode” to make more fine-grained changes to your prompt while keeping the general tone of the image the same.

There’s also a Midjourney Facebook group with more than 60,000 members. Update January 2023: This group has been renamed “AI Art Universe” and now has more than 400,000 members.

Anyway, I’m sold. I just forked over $10 and subscribed. If you want to do the same, the subscription page is here . The $10 plan gives you around 200 images a month. Upgrade to $30 a month for 900 images. Though the number of images can go down a bit if you use extreme upscaling or other advanced features.

January update: Shortly after writing this, I upgraded to the $30 a month plan and turned on the unlimited image mode with the “/relax” command. I have no regrets.

Once you’re subscribed, the Midjourney Bot is on your Discord home screen so you no longer have to hunt around for your images on the Discord server. Plus, the images are in private mode, so you’re the only one who can see them. This is particularly useful if you want to use the images for commercial works such as book covers. And yes, the images are high-quality enough for book covers, though it might take you a few tries to get one you like.

I can definitely see artists using this as part of their workflow.

But I can see authors using it as well, if they don’t have the money for artists and have a lot of time to play with prompts — and enjoy the creative process. This is especially good for authors who have a creative vision, but zero actual artistic skills.

Free alternatives

If 25 images is not enough, and $10 a month is too much to pay — hey, when you’re a starving writer, every penny counts — there are also a lot of free alternatives based on the open source Stable Diffusion image generator from Stability AI .

• Under the "Token" section, click on "Copy". This will be your DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN. Remember to keep this secret!
• Go to the "OAuth2" tab, under "Scopes" tick "bot", then under "Bot Permissions" tick "Administrator".
• You will see a generated URL, use this URL to invite your bot to your Discord server.

🛠 Setting up the AI-Discord-Mod Project

• Clone this repository to your local machine: git clone https://github.com/gravelBridge/AI-Discord-Mod.git
• Navigate to the project directory: cd AI-Discord-Mod
• Copy the .env.template file and rename it to .env: cp .env.template .env
• Open the .env file in a text editor and replace the placeholders with your OPENAI_API_KEY and DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN . Set the USE_TRIGGERING_WORDS and TRIGGERING_WORDS values as per your preference.
• Your .env file should look like this: # OPENAI_API_KEY: Your OpenAI API Key, must be connected to an account with a payment method. OPENAI_API_KEY=your_openai_api_key #DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN: Your Discord Bot Token that's in your Discord Server. • Save and close the .env file.

🏃 Running the Bot

To run the bot, navigate to the project directory and run: python ai-discord-moderator/discord_bot.py For help, run the /help command in your discord server!

The bot should now be active in your Discord server and automatically moderate text and images based on the rules defined in the ai_discord_functions.py and discord_bot.py scripts.

This bot uses AI models which, while powerful, might not always make perfect decisions. It is recommended to have human moderators oversee the bot's actions for best results.

Using aoi.js to build a bot on Discord

Discord is a popular application used for managing online communities. Bots play a huge role in managing these communities. They can entertain members of the Discord server by sending memes, making announcements in public channels, reminding people of upcoming birthdays, and so on.

As web developers, we can use the power of Discord bots to make the development process more efficient. For example, we could build systems for monitoring, data retrieval, and notifications.

Using Discord bots to build such systems can have many advantages:

• No need to invest a lot of time in building such systems — we can use open source libraries to build our bot quickly
• Discord roles make it possible to restrict access to the bot
• Limiting the bot to certain channels in the server helps control data access
• If Discord is used as your team’s primary means of communication, then the team can get all the updates in a single application — for example, a notification when an incident happens, like a build failure or a spike in memory usage
• Using the bot to get relevant information from the database for the team might reduce the risk of leaking database credentials

In this blog post, we will see how we can build a Discord bot using the aoi.js library and use it to retrieve data from the database. We will also see how we can use the bot as a notification system.

Let’s dive in.

Why use aoi.js?

aoi.js is a string-based package for creating Discord bots. This means bot developers can use strings to trigger functions in response to a command. For example:

In the above code, when the user gives a ping command, the bot responds with a message pong .

Here, we are using the pre-built $sendMessage function from aoi.js to send the message pong . aoi.js has over 600 pre-built functions that bot developers can use, so you don’t necessarily need to know how to code to develop a simple bot with this package.

For more advanced use cases, aoi.js provides developers with an option to create custom functions. This package also comes with a database and a music extension. Developers can store simple data — like key-value pairs — in the database, while the music extension makes it possible to develop bots with music capabilities.

aoi.js has an active community of over four thousand members on Discord. If you ever need help while developing a bot, they can reach out to folks.

The ability to build bots using just strings, along with its rich library of over 600 pre-built functions, sets aoi.js apart from other libraries in the same space. Using this library greatly reduces the time and effort required to build bots is reduced greatly.

Creating a Discord application

To create a Discord bot, we first need to create a Discord application. The only prerequisite for this step is having a Discord account.

Head over to the Discord developer portal to create a new Discord application. Give your application a name and hit Create . Once the application is successfully created, you will be automatically redirected to the application configuration screen.

On the left sidebar, click on Bot . Here, you should be able to change the bot’s username. For this tutorial, we’ll change it to FeedbackBot .

One more important thing on the Bot page is the TOKEN under the username. We will use this token — referred to as a Bot Token — to connect to Discord servers and make API calls. To get the token, click on Reset Token and copy the token once it’s generated:

Remember, never share this token with anyone. Also, the token is visible only once, so in case you lose the token, your only option is to reset the token. This action invalidates the older token, so any API calls made using the old token will be invalid.

Additional steps you can take for your own bot include adding a description to the application, adding an icon for the bot, and controlling how it looks via the Rich Presence options.

Adding the Discord bot to our server

Now that we have created a bot, let’s try to add it to our server. To do so, we need to generate a bot invite link. The bot invite link is formatted like so:

There are two things that we need to make the above URL work:

• client_id : This can be obtained from the OAuth2 configuration
• permission_integer : This can be obtained by checking the required bot permissions in the Bot configuration screen that we visited earlier. To keep things simple, we’ll use the Administrator option in the permissions list. Remember, giving admin access to a bot can be risky; please only provide permissions that are absolutely necessary for the bot to function

To easily generate a bot invite link, you can use this permission calculator website. Once the invite link is generated, navigate to that link and add the bot to your server. Once added, the bot will join the general channel in your server.

Configuring and pinging the Discord bot

Now that we have added our bot to our server, let’s configure it using the aoi.js library, then ping it and see if it responds.

First, create a Node.js project:

Then, let’s install aoi.js:

aoi.js is a simple and fast JavaScript package for developing Discord bots. It’s free and open source, and it provides a simple interface to interact with the Discord API. As discussed, aoi.js has over 600 built-in functions that developers can use to quickly build their bots. It also comes with a built-in database that makes storing data a lot easier.

This library only works with newer versions of Node.js, so make sure you have Node v18.19.0 or above. You can either upgrade to this version or use nvm to manage and install multiple Node versions .

Now that we have everything in place, let’s create a bot.js file in our project root:

Here, we create a AoiClient and pass in the BOT_TOKEN , and prefix , intents , and events arrays. Let’s take a closer look at the intents and events arrays.

Intents are WebSocket events sent by Discord to the bot. There are various types of intents. It’s important to pass only those intents that are absolutely necessary for the bot to function; otherwise, the bot will receive data that is irrelevant to it.

In our example above, we use a privileged intent, MessageContent . For this to work, we need to enable MESSAGE CONTENT INTENT in Privileged Gateway Intents . You can toggle this setting in the Bot section of our app in the Discord developer portal:

We then define events in the events array. This tells the client to listen for these events. We created a command called ping and told the bot to respond with pong followed by bot latency in ms.

Since aoi.js is a string-based package for developing Discord bots, it offers a lot of string-based functions out of the box for this purpose. $pingms is one such function that we used in the code above. For a full list of string functions, check out the aoi.js docs .

We’re not quite done yet. Create a .env file in the project root and add the bot token that we generated before:

To make development a bit easier, let’s install Nodemon :

Optionally, we can also add a command in the package.json file for running the bot:

Now, to start the bot, run the following command:

This will start the bot. If you type FeedbackBotping in the general channel, the bot should reply with a message that says Pong! and provides the latency in ms:

Getting feedback from a user using our bot

This is already cool, but now, let’s make the bot more useful. We’ll start with the first use case for our bot, which is to retrieve useful data on demand.

Let’s say we have a web application where users enter feedback. The feedback may be about the products or services our web app offers, the user’s experience using our application, or some glitches or issues a user experienced while using the web application.

We’ll use a fake example of user feedback regarding glitches or technical issues faced while using our web app. The feedback is stored in a feedback table in a Postgres database. Our bot retrieves that feedback on demand and sends it to a channel.

There are three different systems working together here — the frontend application containing the feedback form, the server (which communicates with our Postgres database), and the Discord bot:

Let’s start with the frontend application part. Let’s quickly create a React application using Vite:

Follow the prompts, and Vite will generate a new React application for you. Let’s use aoijs-feedback-form as the name of application. Now, we’ll create a simple feedback form:

We hooked up the feedback form with an API that we will build next:

To finish creating our simple API, we’ll head back to our bot Node.js project and install Express:

Now, let’s create a server.js file in the root of our project:

Copy and paste the following code into your server.js file:

Here, we create an endpoint called POST /feedback . When the user clicks on the Submit button in the feedback form, it sends a POST request to our server. We then insert that feedback in our Postgres database.

We will add another command in package.json to run our server:

To run our server, we need to run this command:

Now, let’s modify our bot code, finish the final piece of our system, and test it out:

Here, we use the createFunction utility provided by aoi.js to create a custom function that connects to our Postgres database and returns data stored in the feedback table. We then create a getFeedback command and call the function we created above.

Now to test this, let’s run everything:

We’ll submit some dummy feedback in the form:

After submitting the feedback form, you should receive a message from the FeedbackBot:

Sending a notification in a Discord channel after an incident

In the previous section, we saw how we can use Discord bot to retrieve information on demand from a data source — in our case, a Postgres database. However, Discord bots can also be used for sending out notifications in a channel when an event happens in the system.

For example, you could set up your bot to notify you when a dev on your team opens a new pull request. You could also send notifications if the CI/CD pipeline fails, the memory or CPU usage of an instance spikes, or pretty much any other situation you need.

Let’s see how we can send a message in a Discord channel when such an event occurs. In our bot code, we will create a custom incident event and trigger it using a setInterval function to simulate an incident:

In the code above, we created:

• An incident event using a CustomEvent from aoi.js that we passed to the client object we created earlier. Next, we assigned the $notifyDevs function to execute when the event occurs. Then, we start the listener for the incident event
• A custom $notifyDevs function that sends a message that reads Incident detected in a channel with the given channel ID

Note that to get a channel‘s ID, you simply open the Discord server and the target channel in your web browser. The last number in the URL bar is the channel ID:

As mentioned, to simulate an event, we use a setInterval function that periodically emits the event incident every 6 seconds. In the real world, many services — like Circle CI and GitHub — provide webhook events that our bot can listen to and trigger the incident event if necessary.

To run the bot, execute the following command:

Every 6 seconds, you should see a message sent by the bot in the channel:

Discord bots can be very powerful. They are easy to build and run and don’t require a lot of deep knowledge of the Discord API. You can use them in creative ways to work more efficiently.
