Let’s now start your 5-day itinerary in New York!

For each day, I will give you  all the details you need to plan your visits + a map  that will allow you to visualize the itinerary a bit better.

I’m assuming  you will be staying in New York for 5 full days and that you will be using the New York Explorer Pass  or  Skip-the-Line Tickets .  It’s the best way to save time and money during your 5-day stay!

Day 1: The Heart of Manhattan

Day 1 visits:

Take a stroll, go for a picnic and explore New York’s largest public park famous locations.

In particular, you should pass by the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain or The Belvedere Castle.

But that’s not all, Central Park is huge, so there is plenty to see:

To end your first day in New York in style, let’s now go to Times Square .

This legendary square , famous for its huge bright billboards, is one of the most famous areas of the city .

There are several iconic stores in and around Times Square, including the M&M’s World , Hershey’s Chocolate World, and the Disney Store.

In and around Times Square, you’ll often find people dressed up as pop culture characters. For a small tip, you can take a picture with them.

Second day: Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan

You simply can’t spend 5-days in New York   without taking a walk on the famous Brooklyn Bridge!

This remarkable architectural feat has stood proudly since 1883, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River. With its Gothic arches and network-like cables, it ranks among the top photography spots in NYC.

As you cover the 1.3-mile length , you can soak in panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Freedom Tower.

Did you know the Brooklyn Bridge was the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge?

At the time of its opening, it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world . A true architectural feat!

Let’s continue the day with a cruise to one of the most iconic landmarks in the world: the Statue of Liberty .

For a taste of Italy, stroll down Mulberry Street in Little Italy . You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped onto the old continent itself.

Can’t decide where to eat? Don’t worry. Here’s my pro tip: head to Paesano or Da Nico . Their pasta and pizza are really good.  And for the dessert, you should try a cannoli or a tiramisu.

If you’re craving more exotic flavors , then Chinatown is the place to go.

I particularly recommend 2 restaurants in Chinatown: Shangai 21 and Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles.

Day 3: Best things to do in New York

Day 3 visits:

To start the 3rd day of your 5-day itinerary in NYC , you should head to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum located on the Hudson River.

The nearest subway station to the museum is 50 Street Station , just a 15-minute walk away.

Here, you can dive into history (without getting wet!) and learn about the role of sea, air, and space crafts in the military.

The centerpiece is the Intrepid aircraft carrier , which was in service during World War II.

You can also explore a real submarine, the Growler , and the Space Shuttle Pavilion featuring the Enterprise space shuttle!

The flight deck of the aircraft carrier also boasts an impressive collection of aircraft , including a Concorde and a Lockheed A-12.

Now that you know everything about US Military equipment, it’s time for New York’s most popular cruise: the Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise .

This is the perfect way to relax and take in the unbeatable views of New York’s skyline .

It’s now time to head for a fun museum: Madame Tussauds New York .

The world-renowned wax museum houses incredible life-like figures of famous people , from Hollywood stars to sporting heroes , and even world leaders .

It’s uncanny how real they look! You can get up close and personal with your favorite celebrities, and they won’t mind at all if you snap a selfie.

Entrance also includes access to the Marvel Super Heroes 4D experience . It’s an immersive and thrilling adventure with your favorite Marvel heroes.

After Madame Tussauds, let’s go on a walk to discover some of New York’s iconic architectural wonders .

Start with a visit to the New York Public Library . With its grand façade and interiors, it’s much more than just a place for book lovers!

Next, head to the bustling Grand Central Terminal . Even if you’re not catching a train, the celestial ceiling and the iconic clock are worth a look. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re in a classic movie.

You should then go to the Chrysler Building, an Art Deco masterpiece   and one of my favorite skyscrapers of New York.

To end your architectural tour, pass by the United Nations Headquarters . It’s a symbol of peace and diplomacy in the heart of the city.

Next stop of the day: the legendary Empire State Building, for sure one of the most iconic places to visit during your 5 days in New York .

The panoramic views of the city from the 86th and 102nd-floor observatories are absolutely breath-taking. As you step onto the viewing deck, you’ll feel on top of the world!

You should really visit the Empire State Building during the late afternoon so you can experience the magnificent sunset over the city.

After this awesome day, it’s time to unwind, and what better way to do so than to catch a musical on Broadway ?

Broadway is synonymous with New York City, and you simply can’t leave without watching one of its spectacular performances. Whether you’re into classic productions like ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ or modern hits like ‘Hamilton’, there’s a show for everyone.

Today we’re going to explore trendy neighborhoods, snack at a renowned market, and enjoy some killer views from some of New York’s coolest rooftop bars.

The day starts in the charming neighborhood of Greenwich Village .

With its tree-lined streets, historic townhouses , and vibrant art scene, it’s no wonder that this area was the birthplace of many cultural movements.

As you wander around, don’t forget to check out Washington Square Park, a favorite gathering spot for locals.

While you’re here, you can explore the small boutiques and enjoy a coffee at a sidewalk café.

You should also seek out the “Friends” apartment on the corner of Grove and Bedford Streets . Even if you aren’t a fan of the show, it’s a pretty cool slice of pop culture history to see in person!

You can also visit the Friends Experience where the sets of Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe’s flats are recreated. Be sure to book your tickets as early as possible because they sell out rapidly!

Feeling a bit hungry? It’s time to head over to Chelsea Market .

This bustling market is a foodie’s dream come true with a wide range of delicious cuisines all under one roof.

From mouth-watering tacos to lobster rolls, you’re in for a treat!

Once you’ve fueled up, you’re just a few steps away from one of the coolest urban parks in the world, the High Line.

This elevated railway line turned park offers a unique perspective of the city.

While strolling through gardens suspended in mid-air, you can admire the local artwork, chill in cozy loungers, and soak up amazing city views.

Next, we’re heading to Hudson Yards to visit the Vessel, a fascinating piece of architecture that looks like a giant honeycomb.

Unfortunately, it is now forbidden to use the spiral staircases in the structure, but you can access the ground floor free of charge.

It’s well worth the walk to see this very special building , made up of 154 flights of stairs, for a total of 2,500 steps!

Just when you thought you’d had your fill of breathtaking views for the day, we’re off to the Edge Observation Deck .

As the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere, it offers jaw-dropping 360° views of the Big Apple.

If you’re brave enough, you can step out onto the glass floor and look straight down. My favorite part was looking down and seeing the tiny yellow taxis moving around below!

This rooftop bar is famed for its extraordinary view of the Empire State Building. You should try their signature cocktails and share a few bites.

2) Westlight at The William Vale

A chic rooftop bar located at The William Vale in Brooklyn. Offering panoramic views of Manhattan and beyond, it’s the perfect place to watch the sunset.

3) The Rooftop at The Standard, High Line

This trendy spot is known for its lively atmosphere and fantastic views of the Hudson River and the city skyline.

4) The Press Lounge

The Press Lounge offers an upscale atmosphere with its large terrace and great views of Manhattan and the Hudson.

The Press Lounge (and most of the rooftop bar’s in New York) enforces a smart casual dress code, so don’t forget to dress appropriately!

New York City is a world-renowned shopping destination.

You already passed by 5th Avenue on the first day, but you can of course go back there to do a bit of shopping.

Looking for something a little more understated?

Head over to Madison Avenue for a mix of designer boutiques and art galleries. And don’t forget the iconic Macy’s at Herald Square!

It’s the largest department store in the world, so yes, you might end up spending a lot of time (and money) there.

Or perhaps you’re more into unique finds and eclectic boutiques?

Then Soho is your place. With its cobblestone streets and cast-iron buildings, this neighborhood is charming in its own right.

Plus, you’ll find numerous boutiques offering everything from fashion to home décor (a bit harder to take back home, though 😅).

After a day of shopping, nothing beats unwinding at a speakeasy or indulging in a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

For a little taste of the Prohibition era, slip into a hidden bar like “Employees Only” or the “ Please Don’t Tell” speakeasy. Trust me, sipping on a cocktail in these secretive establishments is a very special experience!

If you’re a foodie, treating yourself to a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant is an excellent way to wrap up your 5 days in New York .

I personally loved Le Bernardin , known for its exquisite seafood, and Eleven Madison Park , where each dish is a work of art.

Remember to make reservations at these restaurants well in advance. They’re popular spots, and tables can fill up quickly.

To explore the best places to visit in 5 days in New York, you will need to book a hotel.

In order to help you out, I have prepared  a selection of my favorite hotels depending on your budget.

You should really  book your hotel as soon as possible , the best deals usually don’t last long!

Here is my selection of the best hotels to stay in the heart of New York (around Times Square / Empire State Building / Central Park).

• HI New York City Hostel : Youth hostel located right next to Central Park. Dormitory beds from €50 per night. An excellent choice for cheap accommodation in New York City Center!
• Club Wyndham Midtown 45: Located next to Grand Central Station. Bright and spacious double room from €200 per night. Strong Points: the rooftop and the location.
• Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott New York Manhattan/Times Square South: Located 1 km from Times Square. Cosy, comfortable double rooms from €330 per night, including breakfast. Strong points: friendly staff, view, peace and quiet.
• Hyatt Place New York City/Times Square: Located next to Madame Tussauds. Double room with impeccable cleanliness and comfortable bedding from €350, breakfast included. Strong points: central location for visiting New York on foot, very generous breakfast, very friendly staff.
• The Iroquois New York: Located less than 500 metres from Times Square, this 5-star hotel offers superb rooms with very chic decor, from €410 including breakfast. Strong points: ideal, quiet location, attentive staff.
• Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square: Located next to the Rockfeller Center. Very comfortable, noise-isolated room from €450, breakfast €23. Strong points: very professional staff, varied breakfast, very easy to visit the centre of New York on foot.
• Hard Rock Hotel New York: Located next to the Rockfeller Center, this luxury hotel offers elegant, contemporary rooms from €500, breakfast €47. Strong points: the rooftop, the comfort, the classy design. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in New York!

If you don’t mind being a bit further from the centre (don’t worry, it’s still very easily accessible by public transport), here is my list of the best hotels in Wall Street.

It’s a bit quieter than the hotels in Times Square and also slightly less expensive for equivalent quality.

• Hilton Garden Inn NYC Financial Center/Manhattan Downtown: Located 160 metres from Battery Park. Comfortable, modern rooms from €225, breakfast €23. Strong points: the location close to the metro, very comfortable, practical for going to the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island.
• The Washington by LuxUrban: Located 200 metres from the 9/11 Memorial and museum. Stylish rooms from €240, breakfast included. Strong points: metro stations right next to the hotel – perfect for sightseeing, view of the One World Trade Center, quality of bedding, peace and quiet.
• Club Quarters Hotel World Trade Center: Located next to Ground Zero. Spacious and cosy double room from €330. Strong points: location next to several metro stations, views from the rooftop and some rooms, free unlimited water and coffee/tea, in-room fridge.

• The Central Park Zoo: children love to watch animals
• American Museum of Natural History: you can only love its dinosaur fossils and the massive blue whale model!
• Don’t forget to check out the M&M’s and Disney’s stores in Times Square and the Lego’s store on Fifth Avenue for a dose of colorful fun.

5 Days In Ireland: A Logical Itinerary You’ll Love

However , out of all of my 5 day road trips, the 1 below is  hands-down  the most popular!

This is a  logical itinerary for those looking to explore a  realistic  amount of Ireland in 5 days.

You’ll need a car, you  won’t have to change hotel every night and you’ll see some of Ireland’s most famous attractions. 

A quick overview:

• Day 1: Arrive in Dublin (night 1 in Dublin)
• Day 2: Day trip to Wicklow or Meath (night 2 in Dublin)
• Day 3 : Killarney via Cashel (night 3 in Killarney)
• Day 4: The Ring of Kerry (night 4 in Killarney)

Day 5: Depends (either back to the airport or Dingle)

1. Where it starts

This is a 5 day Ireland road trip from Dublin. If you’re  not  starting in the capital, I have 5 day trips beginning in Belfast , Shannon , Wexford , Cork , Mayo and Donegal !

2. How you’ll get around

You’ll need your own mode of transport (see my guide to   renting a car in Ireland ).

If you are using trains and buses, I have 5 day public transport road trips starting in  Dublin , Shannon , Belfast , Cork , Wexford , Mayo and Donegal .

3. Why this itinerary is so popular

The itinerary below has been used thousands of times and it is, hands-down, the one I get the most positive feedback on. The reason for this is that it is:

• Realistic : Avoids excessive driving common in many 5 day Ireland road trips
• Logical : Follows a tried-and-tested route that ensures you use your time efficiently

Day 1: Dublin

Welcome to Ireland’s capital! Now, the first of your 5 days in Ireland will be  completely dependant  on what time you land.

I’m going to follow a 1 day Dublin itinerary that assumes you’re landing early.

If you’re not, just adjust it as needed! Here are some need-to-knows:

Get your rental at the airport

So, although you  won’t  need a car for the first day, it’s easier to get it from Dublin Airport when you arrive, rather than having to collect it on the morning of day 2.

Night 1 and 2 accommodation

You’ll spend the first 2 nights of your 5 day Irish road trip in Dublin. Here are the places that I recommend over and over:

• Budget : The Generator (in Smithfield – 25-minute walk from centre) and  Abigail’s (hostel in Temple Bar)
• Mid-range :  The Harding Hotel (very central – right next to Christ Church Cathedral) and The Skylon (15-minute bus ride from the city)
• Luxury : The Merrion (extremely central, just off St. Stephen’s Green) and The Westin (very central, just off Grafton Street)

Stop 1: The Long Room at Trinity

The 1st stop on your 5 day trip to Ireland is the city’s Trinity College , which was incorporated in 1592, making it the oldest university in Ireland.

Now, you  don’t  have to be a student to enjoy Trinity – you can stroll inside its grounds and admire its Neoclassical and modern architecture.

The main landmark here is the bell tower (pictured above) which was finished in 1853.

The big attraction of Trinity, however, is the tour that takes you to the Book of Kells and the incredible Long Room Library .

The Book of Kells is an ancient manuscript that dates to around 800 AD! 

After seeing the book, you’ll continue through to the breath-taking Long Room which houses 200,000+ of Trinity’s oldest books!

There can be large queues: To avoid ’em, book a fast-track ticket for the tour that also includes Dublin Castle

Stop 2: The shortcut through Temple Bar

The next stop, the Ha’penny Bridge, can be reached via a little detour through Temple Bar (it’s an 8-minute walk).

Arguably one of the most famous attractions in Dublin , Temple Bar is a ‘cultural quarter’ that gets far too much hype from visiting ‘travel bloggers’, in my opinion.

You’ll pay a ridiculous premium in many of the pubs in Temple Bar but the trade-off is live music throughout the day and a party-vibe… if that’s what you’re into!

My 2 cents: Walk right on through Temple Bar. I’ll give you some recommendations for historical city pubs in a moment!

Stop 3: The Ha’penny Bridge

Arguably one of the most famous landmarks in Ireland , the  Ha’penny Bridge is Dublin’s original toll booth!

It has spanned the Liffey River for over 200 years and, once-upon-a-time, you had to pay a Ha’penny to cross it.

You won’t spend a huge amount of time here, but it’s a great little pit-stop en route to stop 4 of this 5 day Ireland itinerary.

Safety warning: You can get some dodgy characters hanging around on the boardwalk on the opposite side!

Stop 4: The GPO

Leave the bridge and take the 5-minute walk along historic O’Connell Street .

Although the street is now home to gaudy shops and fast-food outlets, it’s steeped in history.

Keep an eye out for the different monuments that pay homage to key figures from the Easter Rising and the 1913 Dublin lock-out.

Aim for  the GPO (you can’t miss it).

It’s here you’ll find one of the most overlooked  museums in Dublin and it tells the story of the 1916 Easter Rising brilliantly.

Stop 5: Lunch at the oldest pub in Dublin

Right – it’s time for a feed and, if you fancy, a pint!

Take the 20-minute walk from the GPO to the Brazen Head – the 1st of  many  pubs I’ll take you to on this 5 day Ireland itinerary!

This is the oldest of the  many  old pubs in Dublin , and it dates back to 1198.

The exterior is like something you’d seen in Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series and the interior is like a living-museum.

You’ll get a hearty feed here, a decent pint of Guinness and a very memorable setting that’ll make it hard to leave!

Stop 6: Christ Church, Dublin Castle or St. Patrick’s Cathedral

One of the problems with a short, 5 day trip to Ireland is that you often have to decided between one-place-or-another.

In this instance, you have 3 options:

• Christ Church Cathedral (8-min walk): Dates to 1030 and was established under the reign of Norse King Sigtrygg Silkbeard
• St. Patrick’s Cathedral (13-min walk): Dates to the 12th century and it is Ireland’s largest cathedral
• Dublin Castle (12-min walk): Dates to the 13th century and served as the English headquarters in Dublin for over 7 centuries

My 2 cents: Each of the above attractions are excellent. If I had to choose, I would visit Christ Church!

Stop 7: The Guinness Storehouse

The last stop on day 1 of this 5 day Ireland itinerary takes you to the Guinness Storehouse (20-min walk from Christ Church).

The home of the most famous of the many Irish beers , the Storehouse can be found at St. James’s Gate.

It was here that Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease for the site in 1759!

Grab a ticket in advance (1 million+ people visit each year…) and take the self-guided tour of the interactive museum.

When you’re ready, continue up to the Gravity Bar where you’ll be treated to a freshly-poured-pint along with a view out over the city!

Stop 8: An evening in Dublin

Head back to your accommodation (see my guide on where to stay in Dublin if you haven’t decided) and chill for a bit.

Here are a handful of places to eat and pubs that I recommend to everyone spending 5 days in Dublin:

• Restaurants : 3 of my favourite restaurants in Dublin are SOLE, Gallaghers Boxty House and FX Buckley
• Pubs with music : Darkey Kellys, the Old Storehouse and the Celt are 3 of the best live music pubs in Dublin

Day 2 option A: Wicklow

As I mentioned earlier, I’m going to give you 2 different options for the 2nd of your 5 days in Ireland.

‘Option A’ is Wicklow – AKA ‘The Garden County’ while ‘Option B’ is the Boyne Valley (Meath and Louth).

In my experience, ‘Option B’ is best suited to those that either 1, have a keen interest in history and/or 2, want to avoid long ish  walks.

Stop 1: The Sally Gap Drive (multiple stops)

Out of the many day trips from Dublin, the 26km/16 mile Sally Gap Drive is the one I’ve done this most.

This is a hugely rewarding scenic drive that starts from just outside of Roundwood Village, around a 1-hour drive from Dublin.

Here’s an overview of the stops along the route:

• Lough Tay : Also known as Guinness Lake, Lough Tay can be viewed from above from many vantage points
• Ballinastoe Woods : A now-famous woodland that can be easily accessed from along the road
• The ‘P.S. I Love You Bridge’: Made famous from the movie, it’s a an old-world-style-bridge
• Glenmacnass Waterfall : Park in the car park on the right and  carefully  walk along the road to the viewing area

Stop 2: Glendalough

Park up at the Glendalough Visitor Centre (€4) and plan to spend between one and 30 – 45 minutes exploring the centre and the ‘Monastic City’. 

The visitor centre is right next to the Monastic City , one of the most important monastic sites in the country.

The city was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century and went on to become one of Europe’s most famous religious sites!

At the centre, there’s a wonderful exhibition on the history of Glendalough and St. Kevin.

At the Monastic City, you’ll see the Glendalough Round Tower , one of the area’s most well-known landmarks. It stands 33 metres high and dates back almost 1000 years!

Stop 3: Choose a walk

So, there are many walks in Glendalough , and they vary  greatly  in terms of length and difficulty.

I’ve done the different trails here many times over the years and the 2 I keep going back to are:

• The Lake Walk : A 2-hour/4.1km linear trail with very little incline
• The Spinc Walk : A 3.5 hour/9.5km looped hike that’s graded as strenuous (pictured above)

Stop 4: The Wicklow Heather for lunch

The most visually impressive restaurant you’ll visit during your 5 day trip to Ireland is the Wicklow Heather – a 6-minute spin from Glendalough.

I’d say I’ve eaten here 20 times over the years and, while the food is great, it’s the interior that keeps me coming back.

This is what I imagine an old Irish inn would have looked like back in the day – beautiful wooden panelling, beamed ceilings and thousands of photos and artefacts covering its walls.

Get in, rest your legs, make your belly happy and enjoy your very unique surroundings!

Stop 5: Powerscourt Waterfall

The last stop before your journey back to Dublin for the night is Powerscourt Waterfall – a 25-minute drive away.

The waterfall here, which stands at around 121 metres, is the highest waterfall in Ireland.

It’s easily accessible, too! Park up and take the 30-minute walk that takes you right up to the base of the falls.

It’s particularly impressive after heavy rainfall!

Beware of the flies: If you visit during the summer months, this whole area is  swarmed  with them!

Stop 7: Back to Dublin

It’ll take you around 1-hour to get back to Dublin.

I’m going to give you some different food and pub recommendations for this evening:

• Restaurants : Try Bunsen for brilliant burgers, The Ivy for a fancy feed or Featherblade for a great-value steak
• Great Guinness : You’ll find some of the best Guinness in Dublin in Bowes and Mulligans of Poolbeg St.

Day 2 option B: The Boyne Valley

‘Option 2’ for the 2nd day of your 5 days in Ireland is the ancient Boyne Valley , which is home to counties Meath and Louth.

This day will suit those of you with an interest in Ireland’s past, as it takes in Newgrange and one of the best castles in Ireland .

Although you’ll see  a lot  if you follow this option for day 2 of your 5 day Ireland road trip, you won’t have to drive too much, as the attractions are all relatively close together.

Stop 1: Newgrange

Take the 45-minute drive from Dublin City to the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site.

It’s here that you’ll find Newgrange – a neolithic passage tomb that dates to 3200 BC.

One of Ireland’s most famous historical sites, it attracts the attention of the world on December 21st.

The world watches on as the winter solstice sunrise illuminates the inner chamber, a phenomenon believed to be linked to ancient rituals.

The tour here is 1-hour long and it’s likely to be one of the most memorable stops on your 5 day Ireland road trip!

Book in advance: Pre-booking is essential if you want to visit Newgrange – you won’t get tickets at the door!

Stop 2: St Peter’s Church

Take the 15-minute spin from Brú na Bóinne to the town of Drogheda (you’ll find parking here ).

Take the 5-minute walk around to the impressive St. Peter’s Church and admire the French-Gothic architecture from the outside, first.

The church dates to 1884 and, inside, you’ll find an… interesting feature – the head of St. Oliver Plunkett.

Yes, his  head . Plunkett was a Catholic archbishop who met his end after being done for ‘promoting the Roman Faith’ in England.

Stop 3: Monasterboice

Next up is the Christian settletment of  Monasterboice , a 12-minute drive away.

Now, you don’t  tend  to see this in many 5 day Ireland road trips, but it’s a historically significant site that most will enjoy.

The ruins at Monasterboice date back to the late 5th century when it formed an important centre of religion.

It thrived up until 1142 when nearby Mellifont Abbey was founded.

You’ll likely only spend 30 minutes here, but the 28-metre-high round tower, the ruins and the outstanding Celtic crosses (1 of which is Ireland’s tallest) make it a memorable stop.

Stop 4: Lunch and the Kells Round Tower and High Crosses

Take the 35-minute drive to the town of Kells, next and let’s grab a bit of lunch.

Now, I’m going to give you a slightly  odd  recommendation – head for the ParkRi service station .

Yes, a service station… The best one you’ll every visit! You’ll find a  heap  of top-quality food options here.

When you’re ready, head over to see Kells Round Tower and High Cross .

You’ll see the 26-metre-high round tower as you approach along with the crosses, some-of-which date to the 9th century, nearby.

Stop 5: Trim Castle

Trim Castle (25-minute drive) will likely be another of the highlights from this 5 day Ireland itinerary.

This is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland and it’s incredibly impressive when viewing from afar.

It dates to the 12th century and it took over 30 years to finish. Although now in ruin, it’s still  relatively  well-preserved given its age!

Made famous thanks to its  ‘Braveheart’  connection, it’s free to visit but you can also pay for a guided tour.

Go-for-guided! I’ve done the guided and the self-guided tour here and the guided wins hands-down!

Stop 6: Bective Abbey

The next stop, Bective Abbey , is a handy 8-minute spin from Trim!

Although the ruins here date to the 13th and 15th centuries, there has been an abbey at this site since 1147.

It was founded for the Cistercian Order and the chapter house, church, and cloister are all still visible!

Although free-to-visit, Bective tends to be fairly quiet throughout the year. Allow 20-30 minutes here.

Stop 7: The Hill of Tara

The final stop on day 2 of your 5 days in Ireland is a 10-minute drive away.

The famous  Hill of Tara has been in use since the late Stone Age and it is a sacred site in Irish Mythology as it was the seat of Ireland’s High Kings!

Now,  many  that just head for a ramble around Tara leave underwhelmed (it’s not very visually impressive).

If you can  please  watch the free audio visual show at the visitor centre (inside the church) or take one of the guided tours.

Either of the above will help you understand and appreciate the significance of this ancient site.

Stop 8: Back to Dublin

It’ll take you around 40-minutes to get back to Dublin.

Day 3: Killarney via Cashel

The 3rd of your 5 days in Ireland will see you leave Dublin and head to the buzzy town of Killarney in Kerry.

You’ll stop at the ancient Rock of Dunamase, first, and then the outstanding Rock of Cashel, to break up the journey.

Where to stay in Killarney on night 3, 4 and potentially 5

• Budget : New Street Lodge (beside the park) and Castle Lodge (cosy B&B outside the centre)
• Mid-range : Killaran House (exceptional and very central) and Killarney Avenue (next to the park)
• Luxury : Muckross Park (5-star hotel outside of the town) and The Killarney Park (old-worlde hotel by the train station)

Stop 1: The Rock of Dunamase

The Rock of Dunamase in County Laois is around a 1-hour drive from Dublin.

You’ll see it from afar as it sits in an elevated position at 46 metres/151 feet.

There have been numerous fortifications on this site over the years, as was revealed by excavations that took place in the 1990s.

There was a hill fort during the 9th century and then, around 845, Dublin’s Vikings sieged the site.

The current castle, which was built during the 12 century, is now in ruin, but you can park here and then take a short but steep ish  walk up to it for a look around.

Stop 2: Rock of Dunamase to Cashel

The Rock of Cashel will be the highlight for many that follow this 5 days in Ireland itinerary.

It’s a 55-minute drive from Dunamase and, although it’ll break up your trip to Killarney, it’s a hugely rewarding stop.

The Rock of Cashel looms over the busy town of Cashel in Tipperary from its position on top of a limestone outcrop.

It was originally the seat of the Kings of Munster, but in 1101, it was given to the church. It quickly became one of Ireland’s most important ecclesiastical centres.

Stop 3: Cashel to Killarney

You’re a 2-hour drive from Killarney when you finish up at Cashel.

When you arrive, check-in to your accommodation (see my guide on where to stay in Killarney if you’re undecided) and then grab some lunch.

If you’re after something tasty and casual, J.M. Reidy’s rarely disappoints.

Day 3 of this 5 day Ireland road trip isn’t over – you’re going to explore a bit of Killarney, next!

Stop 4: Ross Castle

Ross Castle is located inside Killarney National Park and, depending on where you had lunch, it  should  be walkable.

However, I’m going to recommend you drive as you’ll need the car for the next two stops!

Ross Castle, which dates to the 15th century, was built at the edge of Lough Leane by the O’Donoghue Mór clan.

Now, you  can  take a tour of the castle but, personally, I’ve always found it better to admire from the outside if I’m pressed for time.

It’s location right by the lake, surrounded by mountains and woodland, makes it an impressive sight to behold.

Stop 5: Muckross Abbey

Muckross Abbey is a 20-minute drive from the castle and it’ll take you roughly 20 minutes to walk to it and the same back.

A visit here is one of the more popular things to do in Killarney for good reason!

Although now in ruin, you can explore the 2 floors of the abbey and admire the many surviving architectural marvels, like the 3 mullioned window.

The abbey is a Franciscan friary and it dates to 1448. It’s most impressive feature is the giant yew tree that grows at its centre.

Stop 6: Torc Waterfall

The last stop on day 3 of this 5 day Ireland itinerary is Torc Waterfall , an 8-minute drive from Muckross.

Now, I left this last for a reason – Torc tends to be  mobbed  with people during the day and it’s near impossible to get parking.

Visiting later in the evening gives you a better chance at 1, being able to park next to it and 2, enjoying it when it’s a little quieter.

Torc is 66 ft high and 360 ft long and it’s a handy 5-minute walk from the car park, so it’s very accessible!

Stop 7: Killarney for the night

And that is day 3 of your 5 days in Ireland finished.

Killarney Town is a tourist-hot-spot and it’s pubs and restaurants tend to be buzzing throughout the year.

Here are the restaurants and pubs I go back to over-and-over again.

• Restaurants in Killarney : Cronins, Porterhouse and the Mad Monk never disappoint
• Pubs in Killarney : O’Connors and Jimmy Brien’s are two great spots for a pint

Day 4: The Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry Drive will be the highlight for many that follow this 5 days in Ireland itinerary.

I have a tried-and-tested (I’ve done it  14 times…) 1-day Ring of Kerry itinerary that takes in the best of the Iveragh Peninsula.

Get a decent breakfast in Killarney and then hit the road no later than 09:00 – you’ve a busy day ahead!

An overview of the route

So, you’ve already visited the first 3 stops from the map above, so you’re going to start from Ladies View, around a 20-minute drive from the town.

I won’t go through all of the stops in detail, as I do that here , but I’ll give you an overview.

• Stop 1: Ladies View : The most impressive viewpoint on this 5-day Ireland itinerary
• Stop 2: Moll’s Gap : A winding pass with breathtaking vistas of the Macgillycuddy’s
• Stop 3: Kenmare : A charming town that’s notably quieter than Killarney
• Stop 4: Staigue Stone Fort: An ancient fort built between 300 and 400 AD
• Stop 5: Caherdaniel for lunch: Fuel up at the Blind Piper
• Stop 6: Derrynane Beach : One of the Wild Atlantic Way’s finest
• Stop 7: Coomakista viewpoint: A famous viewpoint
• Stop 8: Coomanaspig: One of Ireland’s highest accessible points by car
• Stop 9: Kerry Cliffs : Jaw-dropping cliffs towering 1,000 feet high
• Stop 10: Valentia Island : Drive to Geokaun viewpoint for breath-taking views
• Stop 11: Dinner in Portmagee: Grab a bite in the Moorings
• Stop 12: Return to Killarney: It’s a 1-hour and 20-minute drive

The 5th day on this 5 day Ireland itinerary will be completely dependant on your plans.

If you’re flying home/getting the ferry home/or heading back to where you live in Ireland, you’ll need day 5 to travel.

If you have the full day 5 to explore, then it’s time for a day trip to the  the Dingle Peninsula !

Stop 1: Inch Beach

Stop 1 on day 5 of this 5 day Ireland road trip is a 40-minute spin from Killarney.

Although Inch Beach is on the Dingle Peninsula it is, as you can see from the aerial photo above, like a peninsula in itself!

It stretched for an impressive 5.5km and is one of the best beaches in Ireland for surfing.

Grab a coffee from Sammy’s (you can’t miss it!) and then head for a saunter while admiring the mountains and watching the surfers tackle the waves.

Stop 2: Conor Pass

Our next stop is a 30-minute drive away – Conor Pass .

It stands at 410m above sea level and it’s one of the island’s highest mountain passes.

Please take note of the following:

• If you’re driving in Ireland for the first time : Approach from the Dingle Town side. You can pull in and admire the view without having to drive it
• If you want to drive it: Stick ‘Conor Pass’ into Google Maps and take the shorter route to the pass. You’ll drive it both ways

Stop 3: Dingle Town

Your next stop is the very lively Dingle Town , a 10-minute drive from Conor Pass.

Park at the harbour ( here’s the car park ) and then head-off around the town on foot.

You’ll see the status of Dingle’s famous dolphin, Fungie, along with the town’s colourful streets.

If you fancy some a great coffee and a pastry, head to Bean in Dingle . For breakfast, My Boy Blue is hard to bate.

If you’re in need to a hearty lunch, one of the best restaurants in Dingle is the Fish Box!

Stop 4: The Slea Head Drive

As was the case with the Ring of Kerry, the Slea Head Drive is likely to be a highlight for many who follow this 5 day itinerary for Ireland.

It follows and loop and takes in many of the best things to do in Dingle over the course of a 38km/24 miles.

I go into the drive in detail in this guide , but I’ll give you an overview of each stop:

• Ventry Beach : Beautiful 4.5km beach that’s perfect for a ramble
• Ceann Sleibhe and the White Cross: 2 famous viewpoints
• Radharc na mBlascaoidí viewpoint: A great viewpoint to soak up Dunmore Head
• Coumeenoole Beach : Stunning, no-swim beach
• Dun Chaoin Pier : The departure point for the Blasket Island Ferry
• Ceann Sraithe: A Star Wars filming location with views of the 3 sisters
• Clogher Strand: One of Kerry’s best beaches

Keith We are planning a trip to Ireland next September. We will arrive Sept. 24 and have 5 to 7 days to see what we can. There is a group of 6 of us; four late 60's/early 70's and two in their late forties so strenuous hikes are out for most but we are all still active. We are planning on flying into Cork and ending in Dublin but are flexible on this. The group would like to see cliffs and amazing scenery while also getting some history (a castle?) and local flavor of pubs. We are thinking this: 2 days in Cork (following your itinerary suggestions); day threetravel through Kerry to Pormagee on day three seeing sites along the way; stay overnight in Pormagee and boat out to the Skellig of Michael on day four and begin to head back towards Dublin (where we will do some limited exploring) but not sure by what route. We had thought about trying to work Dingle in too but now we are leaning toward the Beara Peninsula while in Cork. Any advice is greatly appreciated. This is our first visit to Ireland and although we know we won't get to see much we want it to be a slow enough viewing that we enjoy our time. Thanks! Julee

We will be traveling into and out of Dublin at the end of April. I was looking at your Route 5: Cork and Kerry itinerary. We were thinking... Day 1-3: Driving to Kindle and doing the routes first 3 days, ending in Kenmare. Day 4: Driving to Kerry Airport to Dublin Day 4-6: Dublin OR Ring of Kerry Loop and Dingle Loop Day 1-3, and Dublin 4-6. Is this doable or do you have other suggestions. Both your day 1-3 and Ring of kerry/dingle look beautiful. We have seen others say Dingle is a must and is superior to the other peninsulas but researching google maps and seeing the pictures leaves us questioning that. Any help would be appreciated.

The Dingle Peninsula is incredible. However, there are a number of other magnificent peninsulas in the area (the Beara Peninsula in Cork is out of this world).

The Ring of Kerry and Dingle route is an old reliable. I don't know anyone that's done it for the first time and that hasn't loved it. There's an endless clatter of natural beauty and plenty of adventure opportunities.

The first route you listed above sounds spot on to me. Is it your first time exploring this corner of Ireland?

Hi Keith! I will be traveling to Ireland the end of May with my boyfriend and 2 other couples. We all fly into Dublin and have about 4.5 full days to travel around, and want to fit in as much as possible. I've been once before but its everyone else's first time. I think we like route 5 the best. We plan on renting a car; everyone else would like to all be in the same car (so a minivan to fit 6) but I remember how narrow the roads can be and would rather have 2 smaller cars. Any advice? Are the roads through route 5 pretty driveable or would you recommend renting smaller? Thanks!

Dear Keith, I wanted to personally thank you for this amazing trip guidance. I wanted to tell you how I used this guide to make ONE 5 day trip around the entire island! Daylight was short and we had to skip lunch and do it with dry foods during the day to at least see a few highlights every day.

Starting from Ireland on mid day we started with Dublin castle, Beer factory, stopped at Belfast city center, Belfast castle and then finished Day 0 near Dark hedges.

Next morning started with Dark hedges, Carrick-a-rede, Ballintoy harbour, Giant causeway, Dunluce castle, Mossaden temple and rested for day 1 night just inside the ireland border.

Next day was the hardest in terms of driving. Started by going up to Malins head, visited Glenvagah national park, stopped by Mount erigal, wanted to go to slieves head but decided against and chose Downpatrick's head instead. And then a brutal drive for 3.5 hours in dark to finally finish in Liscannor and rest for the night.

Next day started with the great great Cliffs of Moher. While trying to find a cheaper parking got a chance to take a look at Doolin cliffs as well! Then headed towards Nun's beach in ballybunion and then finally sunset at Dunquin harbour and Dunmore head (star wars fame). Rested in a great hilly house near Waterville!

Next day started with Kerry cliffs, then onto gap of Dunloe, Ross castle, Torc waterfall, Queen's point ( a bit disapoointing tbh) and then off to Old head of Kinsale.. Wanted to go to Blarney castle on my way to Dungarvan castle but my family was against it as they were already a bit bored. We stayed right opposite Dungarvan castle.

Then on the fifth and final half day started super early to go to Ballydwoane cove and beach, Huntington castle, then the final stop at lough tay and then finally dropped the car off at Dublin airport! Me and my brother have clicked 3000 pictures on this nothing but insane trip, and currently busy editing and spamming our insta feed.

Hi Sayar - thanks for getting in touch and for the kind words!

That's a pretty packed itinerary - the above, for the most part, should be fine once you're not bothered by all of the driving and you just want to squeeze in as much as possible.

If you can, I'd definitely recommend trying to slow it down a bit. My only worry with an itinerary like this is that you're constantly flying about the place and that you don't leave yourself with a huge amount of time to explore around you (obviously if that's how you like to travel then that's perfect!).

I think your first day (exploring Dublin from mid-day and then heading up to Belfast and then onto the Dark Hedges) could be a little too much. Especially when you want to start Day 2 with doing the Causeway Coastal Route.

If you play around with some of your stops on day 2 a little, you'll spend less time driving and you'll line yourself up a little better route wise, here's a suggestion:

Day 1: Do Dublin Castle and the Guinness Storehouse as you mentioned above. When you finish up, head for Belfast and make that your base for the first night. Day 2: The Causeway Coastal Route: If you start this from Belfast, you'll end up at the Dark Hedges at the end (here's a full guide to driving the causeway coastal route ). Spend the night in Portrush.

Ireland is on the top of my bucket list and my husband and I are pulling the plug and coming for our ten year anniversary. We get in April 14th and flying to Edinburgh Scotland on the 20th. I dream of coastlines, cliffs and plenty of local Irish music to fill my cup, my husband want to see Star Wars filming locations haha! What would you suggest since we’re starting in Dublin and ending in Dublin?

Congrats in advance! OK - this was actually much trickier than I thought. The main filming locations are in Cork, Kerry and Donegal. Realistically, with the time you have, you need to pick either the Cork and Kerry locations or the ones at Malin Head in Donegal.

Personally, I think you'll get more bang for your buck in Cork and Kerry, as there are more filming locations to see.

Here's what I'd do:

// April 14th //

- Arrive in Dublin and ramble around the city for the day - If you're looking to stay somewhere fancy, try the

// April 15th //

- Spend day exploring Wicklow (stay near the Wicklow Heather - it doesn't get much cosier than this place - Google to see what I mean) - Lynham's Hotel is a solid option for the night (central and the reviews are excellent)

// April 16th //

- A big day of driving: Get up early this morning and drive to Cobh. This is your first stop off (3 hour and 10 minute drive from Wicklow) - Visit Kinsale next and then head along the coast to Brow Head (filming location) and visit Mizen Head after - Spend the night in Bantry ( the Maratime is central, nicely priced, and has great reviews)

// April 17th //

- Limit the driving on this day. Make Killarney your base (there are loads of things to do in Killarney and closeby) - The Killarney Plaza hotel is central and has great reviews. It's a little pricer at around €130 per night, but the reviews are top-notch

// April 18th //

- Drive to Portmagee. The Skellig Michael boat tours start in April but you'll need to book in advance (note that weather conditions can result in sailings being cancelled) - Skellig Michael is arguably the most iconic of Ireland's Star Wars filming locations - Spend the night in the Moorings in Portmagee

// April 19th //

- Drive to Dingle. There's loads to see around here - Ceann Sibéal was another prominent filming location that you can visit while you're here - Spend the night in either the Dingle Skellig or the Dingle Garden Townhouse

5 days in Sicily itinerary: how to see the best of Sicily in less than a week

5 days in Sicily itinerary ideas: Eastern Sicily and Western Sicily road trip ideas for all types of travelers.

Sicily is a wonderful destination, blessed with beautiful archaeological sites, stunning cities, beautiful sea and some of the best food in Italy.

Visiting Sicily, you are likely to see very beautiful places pretty much no matter where you go however, Sicily is big so some planning is necessary.

In this article, I going to recommend two Sicily itineraries, both for 5 days in Sicily: one focuses on the East side of the island and one focuses on the West, both including Sicily highlights and places I believe a first trip to Sicily should include.

5 days in Sicily itinerary in Eastern Sicily

Eastern Sicily is a wonderful part of the island, with a varies landscapes and avaiable experiences.

Our itinerary started from Taormina, which we reached by train from Rome, but you can easily also explore this area arriving at Catania international airport, Messina, Palermo and even Comiso (small, Ryanair airport in the South of the island).

This itinerary requires a car however, some locations such as Taormina – Catania – Siracusa area connected by good trains.

Day 1 – Taormina

Taormina is one of the most famous destinations in the whole of Sicily, a small town known glamour, views and a stunning ancient theater that is unique in the world.

Taormina is a small center and a place you can visit in one day or that you can use as a base to explore the area.

The main things to see and do in Taormina are:

• Visit the ancient theater , a stunning archaeological ruins in a scenic location – this is one of the most beautiful historical sites in Italy and, in my opinion, the world.
• Visit the pretty city center and notice the small churches, alleys and colorful shops of this manicured town
• Admire the view over Mount Etna and the sea from the town’s gardens
• Take the gondola to small Isola Bella and its pretty beach

Day 2: Siracusa

Siracusa is a beautiful city on the eastern Coast of Sicily, South Catania, famous for a stunning historical city center and one of the most famous archaeological parks in Italy: Parco della Neapolis.

For this Sicily itinerary, I have devoted only one day to Siracusa but you can easily spend at least two days here and not run out of things to do. If you add local excursions, you can actually spend a week here and not run out of things to do!

A day in Siracusa is however very satisfactory and you can see the two most famous parts of town: Ortigia (city center) and archaeological park.

I recommend you start your day in Siracusa in Ortigia, the historical center of town. Ortigia is geographically a small island but it is easy to access via pedestrian bridges that link it to the modern part of town.

Once you are in, you will lovely small alleys, elegant squares, the famous Arethusa Fountain, already in existence at the time of Siracusa’s foundation, the remains of the temple of Apollo and one of the most beautiful squares in Italy: Piazza del Duomo.

In the afternoon, i recommend you take e bus shuttle to the archaeological park.

Highlights here are the ancient Greek theater, still now in use for representation of classical Greek theater performances and the latomie .

The Latomie are quarries excavated in tall rock faces: in ancient times, they were used as labor camp for war prisoners and were one of the reasons Siracusa was feared in the antiquity as a powerful and dangerous enemy.

the latomie are impressive and the entrance is reachable by an easy path with luscious vegetation: a must see.

Good to know : this archaeological park is one of the easiest historical sites to visit in Italy with kids, so a perfect stop for families too.

Day 3: Marzamemi and Noto

I recommend you spend you third out of these five days in Sicily exploring two very different and very beautiful towns: Marzamemi and Noto.

Marzamemi is a small fishing village on the South-eastern Coast of Sicily and it is a place you may have sen photos of thanks to its huge Instagram fame.

Indeed, the place is a delight.

The village has a main square now filled with local restaurants with outdoor tables and colorful decor and it is also famous for beautiful tonnara (tuna fishing station), that is now used for special events.

The village is tiny and pretty, and a perfect stop for lunch.

In the afternoon, I recommend you visit Noto, the town giving the name to the UNESCO famous Val di Noto, known for it important and stunning baroque churches and architecture.

Noto is a delight, especially if you see it at sunset, when the sun sets over the cream tones of the elaborate facades of this beautiful town.

This is a wonderful place to sightsee in the afternoon and also a good locality to spend the night.

Day 4: Ragusa Ibla and Modica

Ragusa Ibla and Modica are two beautiful towns in Southern Sicily part of the same UNESCO World heritage area as Noto.

They are both famous for incredible baroque architecture and Montalbano lovers will also recognize this area as the backdrop of the TV series episodes!

Both towns are worth seeing and they are close enough to each other that you can see them both in one day.

Good to know : as well as architecture, Modica is famous for the production of some of the best artisan chocolate in Italy !

Day 5 – Piazza Armerina and Palermo

Day 5, the last day of this 5 day in Sicily itinerary, is a good day to see two more important and beautiful sights in Sicily: Piazza Armerina, a beautiful town with a historical city center and an important Roman Villa, and Palermo.

Pelermo deserves more than one day but this is the case for most of the locations in this itinerary and I think it is good to know you can get a taste of this beautiful city even with only a few hours in the city center.

Piazza Armerina is one the way and you can easily stop for a visit, if you prefer to limit your time in the big city and want to soak up a last afternoon in a typically Sicilian town.

5 days Western Sicily itinerary

If you prefer to explore Western Sicily, then I recommend you follow this 5 day itinerary, perfect if you want to stay West of Palermo and see locations such as Erice and the famous Valley of the temples.

Day 1 – Palermo

Palermo is the capital of Sicily, the island’s biggest center as well as one of its most beautiful destinations.

The city is home to several architectural styles ranging from Arab Norman style buildings to Baroque churches and in this sense is a fantastic place to get a sense of the wealth of cultures and nations that called Sicily home over the course of the centuries.

Significant buildings and churches are scattered around the city and have that distinctive character of grandeur mixed with decaying splendor that is so typical and so charming about Sicily.

not to be missed are its cathedral, palazzo dei Normanni and Palermo’s market, a wonderful place also to taste authentic and truly delicious Sicilian food.

Day 2 _ Scopello and Zingaro Reserve

Day two of this Sicily itinerary leads you to a stunning area that is very close to Palermo yet feels a million miles away: the area of San Vito lo Capo, the Zingaro Reserve and Scopello.

This is a part of Sicily with wonderful nature.

The sea and beaches here are out of this world beautiful and the small towns pleasant and scenic: Castellamare del Golfo is lovely and well served while the small village of Scopello is charming and offers incredible views over the bay below.

Scopello is also home to a stunning Tonnara, film lovers will recognize from Ocean 12!

The Zingaro Reserve is protected and beautiful and near this area you also have the stunning temple of Segesta, one of the most evocative ancient sites in Sicily.

Day 3 – Erice and Marsala

On this day, I recommend you visit Erica and the Marsala salt pans, two location in Sicily that truly showcase how beautiful and varies this island is!

Erice is a small, medieval town perched on a hilltop above Trapani.

Is a place of huge charm and very different from what you imagine a Sicilian town to be as it is often chilly, its high position and vegetation making it home to a peculiar micro-climate.

Erice has a wonderful historical center and stunning views and can be easily visited even in a short time.

Marsala is not far from Erice and Trapani and is famous not only as producers of the sweet Marsala wine but also for its salt pans, wonderful to visit.

The salt pans are large, flat areas where sea salt gets harvested following ancient methods.

They are interesting to visit but even more, they are beautiful.

The low water have pink hues and there are some traditional windmills that make the whole area look out of a storybook!

This is a very special place and unique to this part of Sicily, especially if you come her later in the afternoon when the sun starts to set and the colors warm up

Day 4 – Valley of the Temples and Scala de’ Turchi

The Valley of the temples is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Italy and a place like no other.

Here, you can see wonderful Greek temples in various state of conservation, dating back up to the VIII century BC.

The park is stunning and scenic: my recommendation is to visit early in the morning before the sun gets too strong. The valley is dry and sunny so, while wonderful, can be hard in summer or in the hottest hours of the day.

After a visit to the temples, you can spend time visiting another Sicilian marvel: Scala de’ Turchi famous for natural steps of white rock sloping into the deepest blue sea.

Day 5 – Cefalu’ and Monreale

On the last day of this 5 day Western Sicily itinerary, I recommend you head back north and visit two localities: Cefalu’ and Monreale, before heading back to Palermo.

Once again, these two places are very different form each other but both worth seeing.

Cefalu’ is a seaside village, with a lovely harbor and a pleasant center, perfect for a last day of sightseeing and sea views.

Good to know : Cefalu’ is lovely for families and one of the places we recommend you visit if you are in Sicily with kids .

Monreale on the other hand is famous for a stunning duomo and it a locality art lovers should not miss.

Both these destinations are close to Palermo and they are easy stops before getting back to the city or its airport.

The perfect 5-day itinerary for Georgia

A lot of history, amazing nightlife, charming cobbled stone streets, the lovely Caucasus mountains, lush verdant lakeside and riverside towns, exquisite churches and great wine- these are some of the few reasons to visit Georgia, the Asian/ European country increasingly becoming a popular tourist destination. Hardly a 3-hour flight from where I live (Dubai), it is one of the places that I had heard so much about but was waiting to get a long weekend off to book a last-minute flight. A whirlwind trip to a pretty country aspiring to be European, placed at the crossroads of Asia and Europe geographically as well as culturally, it was an interesting and unique experience. Here is the perfect 5-day itinerary for Georgia.

There were things I missed out on, which I would have loved to do, given more time. If you’re planning a trip, here are a few things you need to keep in mind:

–       For those holding a residence visa of any of the GCC countries, the visa is granted upon arrival and is free of charge (they just stamp your passport) and the only document required is a return ticket and travel insurance.

–       If you’re not a resident of the GCC countries and are required to pre-apply for a visa as per your nationality, you can still get visa-free entry into Georgia if you hold a valid US visa.

–       In case none of the above requirements are fulfilled, it is easy to apply for an e-visa online which takes about 5 days to be processed.

–       Although there are a lot of blog posts and TripAdvisor posts warning against self-drive, I would recommend renting a car if you plan to explore the countryside. Outside Tbilisi city, the roads are quite open and traffic organized.

–       If you’re not comfortable driving on your own, there are several taxi (private) operators that offer car along with a driver/guide on a daily rate basis (for up to 10 hours). I had a wonderful experience with  Day Trip Georgia  in a private 3-day tour from Tbilisi at USD 330. Alternatively, you can look at booking your tours from Tbilisi through other third party websites.

You can plan your itinerary for Georgia according to your interests and because I wanted to make sure I experience the diversity of the country, I decided to cover a little bit of everything- from old towns and historical churches to beautiful landscapes and peaceful countryside. Here’s my recommended itinerary for 5 days (with alternative plans and options, should you decide to spend more time).

Day 1: Tbilisi Old Town

On the first day, spend some time exploring the lovely old capital city, Tbilisi. Ancient churches, monasteries, cobbled stone streets and charming architecture will come alive with street art, music, cafes and bars, funky shisha places, clubs and friendly people. A strong Asian influence comes in cahoots with European culture, creating a vibe that is unique, fun and full of energy.

Although modernization is visible, the soul of the city lies in the old town, where the zigzagging lanes, street markets, colourful houses and al fresco cafes maintain a certain charisma. Walking is the best way to explore this area and many historical structures will be found at a stone’s throw from each other.

In your itinerary for Georgia, I would recommend to spend 2 days in Tbilisi.

Day 2: Mksheta, Gori &  Uplistsikhe

Mksheta is the old capital of Georgia and is hardly a 20-minute drive from Tbilisi city. It is the birthplace of Christianity in Georgia and houses beautiful cathedrals with medieval architecture, a touristy cobbled-stone street with shops and food stalls, and a monastery perched on top of the hill which sets an amazing backdrop to the town, which is on the banks of the rivers -Mtkvari and Aragvi.

The tourist market  was one of my favourite places on this trip. It surrounds the famous Svetitskhoveli cathedral and has winding lanes and stone houses, which are gorgeous and take you back in time. This is the perfect place to buy souvenirs and get pictures clicked, with an ancient feel. The  Svetitskhoveli cathedral , a grand building located in the middle of the market, is said to date back to the 11 th  century and have magical healing powers. Christ’s robe (?!) is said to be buried under this place of worship which is also the burial place of many monarchs. Keep about 1.5 – 2 hours to explore this place.

From here, head to  Jvari Monastery  on the hilltop. Not only is this ancient Orthodox church a marvel in its architecture and design, the views from its terrace are breathtaking. You can see the old city of Mksheta with the confluence of the two rivers below, and houses with red roofs that stand in stark contrast to the sprawling greenery around them.

From here, head to Gori, a town famous for one reason – this is where Stalin was from! The most popular place to visit here is the  Stalin museum , our driver wasn’t very happy to bring us to this town (or the museum for that matter) and seemed quite restless and uncomfortable till we were ready to leave and move to our next destination.

The museum, although interesting, is hard to make sense of unless you have a guide. Most inscriptions are not in English which makes it tough to understand much. The town is home to Stalin’s supporters and admirers, and thus the museum does not display much of his negative or bad deeds.

Another popular place to visit, which is a 40-minute drive from here, is the  ancient cave city of   Uplistsikhe . It is known to be one of the oldest settlements in Georgia, dating back to the 2 nd  century BC and many temples have been unearthed here which are from before the arrival of Christianity in the region. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes as climbing these rocks is not an easy task and the area is quite large to be explored. During the summer, the arid landscape can make you very dehydrated so make sure to carry water with you as you go up, the cafes are only at the bottom.  Keep about 1-1.5 hours to explore this place.

Drive back to Tbilisi which is at about 2.5 hours distance.

Day 3: Annanuri, Gadauri & Kazbegi

This was the best day in my itinerary for Georgia because although I really wanted to explore a variety of things including historical and cultural places, the mountains are what captured my heart in Georgia. All the three towns were equally charming. As you begin your trip from Tbilisi, in about 30 minutes, you will witness some of the most amazing, green landscapes. Stunning valleys and rivers with take your breath away and hidden spots such as cafés and restaurants serving locally-fermented wine are scattered across the area, so go slow and find your little treasure of a place.

I found a cute little river-side bar and although nobody spoke English, the setting amidst nature was so serene, I almost spent an hour just taking a dip in the cool waters and sipping on some great white wine.

As you drive through the winding mountain roads, known as the  Georgian Military Highway , you will come to a gorgeous blue lake, the only one I saw in my trip to Georgia. Jinvali Lake or reservoir as they sometimes call it, continues along the driving road until you arrive at the Ananuri complex, featuring a fortress, churches, and towers from the 13-16 th  centuries. Set in the backdrop of the Caucasus mountains, the architecture is enchanting and walk inside the fortress is a must! You might also want to take a dip in the waters behind the complex, in the summer.  A souvenir market just outside the complex is a great place to strike some good bargains.

After Ananuri, head to  Gadauri,  where the landscapes get even lovelier. This is where the ski resort is located, however, during the summer, it is hard to find any snow at all. You may, however, want to try the para-gliding from here because of the amazing views over the valley. A viewing platform decorated with mosaics, located on the edge of the hill is a popular place for tourists to stop and take some amazing pictures.

After some mountain activities and lovely pictures, proceed to  Kazbegi,  specifically to a town called  Stepantsminda,  from where the trek/ off-road tours to  Gergeti Trinity Church  begin. This is one of the prettiest churches I visited in Georgia, perched on a hill and with snow-capped peaks in the backdrop. If you choose to hike to the church, keep about 1.5 – 2 hours for it else you can take a tour (in a 4-wheel drive) from the village below. Be prepared for an extremely bumpy ride! The views from the top, however, are worth it.

Day 4: Kakheti (Sighnaghi). Optional: Davit Gareji

In our itinerary for Georgia, we decided to keep one day to visit the wine capital, Kakheti and on our way, we took a detour to  Davit Gareja Monastery,  having heard of very good reviews about this cave monastery. However, the drive was through very bad roads and took us about 1.5 hours one way (and another 1 hour back to the main road to proceed towards Kakheti), which made me question the worth of visiting this monastery.

Although the ancient cave monastery itself is beautiful, complemented by the arid, semi-desert landscape that surrounds it, it may not be worth braving the bad roads and spending that extra time in getting there. If you do plan to, however, take this detour, make sure to wear good shoes as climbing up is not easy, through the tough stone and mud paths.

Kakheti  is the primary wine-producing city in Georgia. Two major towns form the center of all activity –  Sighnaghi , and  Telavi.   We chose to spend our time in the picturesque old town of Sighnaghi.

Red brick houses with contrasting mint green rooftops and balconies adorn the landscape of this little town. The architecture is stunning in its ancient grandeur, and the cobbled stone streets lined with lamp posts, vintage cars, and old city walls form the perfect little postcard. You can just walk around the town or rent a buggy or ATV to explore it in an adventurous way.

Do visit a winery while you’re here. One of the most popular ones (as per TripAdvisor) is the  Pheasant’s Tears Winery . If you plan to have a meal with your wine, you might need to make reservations in advance as the place usually gets very crowded. The selection of wine is brilliant and the service is great. If you do not know what to have, feel free to ask their knowledgeable sommeliers for recommendations. For wine enthusiasts, they also offer tours to their vineyards, might be an interesting experience to go for!

Day 5: Tbilisi city & return

Alternatives:

If you have more than 5 days in Georgia , there are several things that you can do. Some of the cities that I personally would have loved to visit if I had more time to spare but unfortunately, could not be included in our 5-day itinerary for Georgia are:

1.      Svaneti:  A lot of great reviews of this region made me regret not having gone here at all. Villages set amidst the lush green hills and the snow-capped Caucasus in the background, meandering rivers tearing through the valleys, and mountain towns like Mestia make for breathtaking scenery. Hikers, nature-lovers and photography enthusiasts must consider this destination. Due to its distance from Tbilisi city, it is recommended to spend a night here (if not more) instead of covering it on a day trip from the capital.

2.      Tusheti:  Tusheti National Park seems like yet another mountain city that deserves to be explored. However, due to the rough terrain, it is considered ideal for hiking enthusiasts who are looking for tough adventure and not just the laid-back type. There are horseback rides for the lesser adventurous. Yet again, due to the distance from Tbilisi city, it is recommended to spend a night here (if not more).  

3.      Batumi:  When we think Georgia, it is the ski slopes, mountains, historical churches and streets, and wineries that come to our minds. However, there is also a very popular beach city here located on the coast of Black Sea. Batumi is home to gorgeous beaches and waterfalls and is very well-developed in terms of its infrastructure. 

If you’re interested in immersing yourself further in the local culture, consider learning Georgian ; it can enhance your interactions and help you navigate more comfortably.

Hi Jade, there is likely to be snow in certain areas such as Gadauri & Svaneti, where you have the mountains, during late November or early December but not before that.

Hello Jaseem, as far as I know, the visa validity won’t be a problem, as long as your passport is valid for at least 6 months.

The residence visa validity dates are important for sure, 3 months or 6 I am not sure. Pls double confirm.

Hey Jaseem, should not be a problem. I travelled solo as well and had my hotel booking as well as travel insurance. They didn’t ask me any other questions, I got a visa on arrival pretty easily (thanks to my UAE residence visa). You should be fine. Just be prepared for cold weather in November though! Have fun 🙂

Hello Junaid, sorry I won’t be able to help you with Prometheus Cave as I didn’t go there. As for road tolls on Day 3 & 4, I don’t remember there being any. Parking wasn’t a hassle either, each of the places you’ll visit has ample parking space available. Most of it was free as well unless something has changed. Even if there is, it won’t be much.

The roads of Georgian Military Highway are fine, a small car is manageable. As you said, Trinity Church requires a 4×4. Not sure if you’re planning to go to Davit Gareja Cave Monastery but if you are, then the roads aren’t great, or at least not when I had travelled last year.

Im planning to travel georgia in the month of NOV. Is it advisable to pre book tours or is it better to reach there and book. Also could you let us know how much would it cost if we would rent a private car per day. Please suggest useful trip as i will be travelling with a 3 yrs old kid. TIA 🙂

You can easily reach there and book if you like, however, pre-booking will save you the hassle. You can use the link I have given in the post for a company that does private tours, you can book with them beforehand and pay when you’re there, in cash. I paid about $330 for 3 days, had the car with a knowledgable driver from 9 am until 7 pm from Tbilisi to wherever you wish to go. They would also be happy to suggest the places and an itinerary to you or alternatively, you can design your own itinerary and let them know where all you would like to go.

Hi Sindhu, it will be REALLY cold in December and I would advise you to visit only if you’re either a ski enthusiast or don’t mind being in a cold place. Areas like Kazbegi will have snow. As long as you’re prepared to handle that, it should be fine.

I’ve heard wonderful things about the food in Georgia – things like Khachapuri – it’s all about the carbs and cheese by the looks of it! I love the look of Tbilisi from your pictures. The Bridge of Peace is magnificent architecture – I like the juxtaposition between that and the older buildings of the Old Town.

Hello Mr Rao, it was quite hot I have to say, but manageable. I live in Dubai so heat doesn’t bother me too much but the temperatures were upwards of 30 degrees. It’s a right-side driving (with steering wheel on the left) and although I read a lot of negative reviews about self-driving in Georgia (which is why I didn’t rent a car myself and decided to hire a driver instead), it seemed quite comfortable and easy. ATMs are easily available in the capital city but I would recommend to exchange cash at the airport or carry dollars with you (which many shops/ tour companies/ sites accept). Serviced apartments are a popular choice though I’d recommend booking them through a reliable website like booking.com or airbnb only. If you’re looking for cooler temperatures, I’d advice you to visit the mountains such as Gergeti and Svaneti.

Yes, absolutely! I wore dresses all along. Just carry a jacket for when you go into the mountains but otherwise, it will be quite warm.

Georgia is one country which fascinates me for its stunning history and some absolutely breathtaking views. I loved the View from the top near Jvari Monastery. Given a choice I would spend most of my time in Sighnaghi Town and Gadauri. I love small fairy-tale old towns like these.

I love small fairytale towns too and Sighnaghi was a lot of fun! I went around exploring on a quad bike and the cart, and it was a great idea.

I’ve read that Georgia is a lovely place and it certainly looks historic and impressively beautiful. The Ananuri Fort Complex looks particularly interesting to me but Gauduri and Kazbegi look very picturesque as well. Hopefully, we can make it there one day!

If you do, try to visit for more than 5 days. A trip to the Svaneti region is recommended too 🙂

It is nice to know that with a valid US visa, you do not need an additional visa to Georgia for us Indians. I would definitely love to drive around Georgia too. I had no idea that Georgia is only a couple of hours flight from Dubai – super easy to get to! The tourist market sounds amazing and I think it would be my favorite part of the trip. Plus great way to see the historic Cathedral then head off shopping to buy gifts and souvenirs. The view from the monastery also looks incredible – what a great way to soak in the incredible beauty of Georgia!

Wow! You have been to some exciting places! Your photos are enough to make anyone add Georgia to ones travel list. I have had this tiny strip of land between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea , on my list for a while now.

Wow, you did many things for just one long weekend! I spent about 10 days in Georgia and I LOVED it, basically for all the reasons you mentioned at the beginning of your post + their yummy staples. I did more hiking but I missed Sighnaghi Town, which from your pictures looks great! So another excuse to visit Georgia again 😉

I think that Georgia is still really quite an untapped destination. It’s so much more picturesque than I’d imagined. Good to know that you can rent a car with ease. The landscape is gorgeous, and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral looks particularly beautiful.

7 Last-Minute Escapes for Labor Day Weekend

If you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places in North America that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

It might sound like an impossible request: a last-minute Labor Day getaway with gorgeous weather and minimal crowds that you can squeeze into a long weekend. There are good reasons many destinations across North America won’t fit the bill. Wildfires are burning in some parts of the West, tropical disturbances are brewing in the Caribbean, the East Coast’s coastal retreats are packed, and much of the South is sweaty and oh so steamy. But if you’re still hoping to stretch out the last days of summer, there are places that are not too hot, not too crowded and not necessarily that far away.

Here are seven inspirations in North America for a Labor Day getaway.

North Carolina

Hike to magical waterfalls

Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Asheville, N.C., and covering 500,000-plus acres, Pisgah National Forest is a magical place to be immersed in nature. American goldfinches and Carolina chickadees sing high above waterfalls framed by lush green trees, and babbling streams pour down moss-covered rocks hiding salamanders, newts and crayfish.

During the summer, these wooded areas are chock-full of children at summer camp, and the trails are often busy with hikers. But by Labor Day, most of the kids have returned home, while the weather is often perfect, with average temperatures in the seventies. You have your pick of activities — bird-watching, fly fishing, waterfall dousing and hiking.

Easy trails can be found at the North Carolina Arboretum , but for a shaded, moderate hike to a waterfall in which you can douse, check out Catawba Falls Trail . For another moderate hike (but no swimming), there is Linville Gorge and Falls , nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. Advanced hikers can summit the 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell , the highest peak in the Eastern United States, in Mount Mitchell State Park, which is surrounded by Pisgah Forest.

Later, make your way back to Asheville , where a robust restaurant and brewery scene offers a perfect setting for sharing stories of your day. Local favorites include Cúrate for upscale tapas, Chai Pani for Indian food and Wicked Weed Brewing for hoppy deliciousness.

See San Francisco’s best-loved sights

“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco,” may be a clichéd phrase, but anyone who has visited this California city during the summer most likely experienced fog, dank air and brisk wind. But September and October are San Francisco’s warmest and brightest months of the year.

A long weekend is just enough for first timers to sample the city’s best-known attractions. Walk or bike across the Golden Gate Bridge . Board a cable car as it clangs up and down the city’s hills. Explore Alcatraz Island on a three-hour tour (book ahead). Take in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which may be less chaotic with many children back in school. Watch a home game of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park , right on the bay. Or check out the Presidio Tunnel Tops , a newly developed stretch of national park land featuring stunning panoramic views.

The city is a particularly special destination for those interested in L.G.B.T.Q. history. The GLBT Historical Society Museum , nicknamed the Queer Smithsonian, is a good place to start, as is a stroll through the Castro neighborhood or a stop at the Castro’s first gay bar, opened in 1963 as the Missouri Mule (now called Beaux).

Swim, fish, boat, then sip, at the Finger Lakes

One of the largest Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Keuka Lake stretches about 20 miles and draws visitors with clear-water swimming, paddling, kayaking and fishing. Labor Day marks the end of its high summer season.

Visitors can use picnic tables, playgrounds and swimming areas off sandy beaches at Keuka Lake State Park near Branchport or Red Jacket Park in the village of Penn Yan, on the lake’s northern end.

On its southern shores, the charming village of Hammondsport has cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which are clustered around the Pulteney Square Historic District .

Fishing is a big draw, with brown trout, yellow perch and more inhabiting the lake’s deep waters. You can buy your own fishing equipment at Jake’s Boat Livery , or get the professionals to do it by chartering a fishing expedition through Summit to Stream Adventures .

Don’t forget the wine: 20 vineyards are scattered around the lakeshore, with six part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail . You can visit most wineries on your own or with a tour.

Keuka Lake is a one- to two-hour drive from airports in Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo. The lake is about a five-hour drive from New York City.

Soak your stress away in alpine splendor

During Labor Day weekend, the I-70 corridor that connects Denver to the ski towns to the west, like Winter Park, Keystone and Breckenridge, can be bumper to bumper, especially getting back on Monday.

But nestled in the San Juan Mountains, about an hour’s drive from Telluride, is Ouray, an often overlooked gem for outdoor fun. Sure, there’s great hiking and canyoning, but there aren’t many towns where you can stroll down Main Street and stop into a boutique for shopping, a cafe for coffee and a hot springs for soaking. Ouray Hot Springs Pool is sulfur-free — in other words, no rotten-egg stink — and offers not just one pool but many: The family-friendly pools feature water slides, a volleyball net and a rolling log, while the adults-only soaking section is kept between 102 and 106 degrees.

Montrose Regional Airport , about an hour’s drive from Ouray, has direct flights to Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.

Sample delicious urban delights

You won’t scratch the surface of what Mexico City offers in a long weekend, so consider tossing away those checklists and instead soak up the atmosphere in one or two neighborhoods.

Start by signing up for the city’s bike share app, Ecobici , for an easy way to get around town. The Roma neighborhood, a favorite among travelers, has shaded, walkable streets; inviting plazas; and some of the city’s best restaurants. For a neighborhood with a tad fewer tourists, try La Condesa , a short bike ride from Roma and between the two lovely green spaces called Bosque de Chapultepec and Parque México . Shopaholics should visit Polanco , where the commercial thoroughfare Presidente Masaryk Avenue offers luxury stores.

Whichever neighborhood you pick to explore, you’ll be delighted by the quality and flavors of food offered at the city’s restaurants, food carts and 11,000-plus taco shops. Even if a corner spot looks shabby, it might be producing food that could rank among the best bites you’ve ever had. Look no further than Taquería El Califa de León, an unassuming taco stand that won a Michelin star this year , as an example of the culinary magic that lies around any given corner.

Nova Scotia

Time-travel in a 1700s fishing village

About 62 miles southwest of downtown Halifax along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, breezy Lunenburg is a fishing village with charm — and fresh seafood — to spare.

Old Town Lunenburg is considered by UNESCO as the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Its colorful homes face tall ships moored in the harbor, transporting visitors back to the 1700s. Stroll around the area on your own, popping into local shops and restaurants, or sign up for a walking tour .

At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , part of the Nova Scotia Museum , you can experience what life was like in a fishing village throughout the centuries, from early Mi’kmaq communities to the arrival of Black Loyalists in 1783 to today. The museum is housed in an old fish processing plant, and the Old Fish Factory Restaurant now serves Nova Scotia lobster rolls on a wharf-side patio.

Fresh lobster is available year-round in Nova Scotia, so check out some stops on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail . But don’t forget much of the Atlantic’s bounty: mussels, scallops, halibut, Arctic char, cod — even a seaweed called dulse — can be found on local menus.

Roam and ride in the sand dunes

The Great Lakes were made for summer, but the challenge is finding a spot that isn’t too crowded. Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a destination even many Michiganders don’t know about.

Located an hour-and-a-half drive from Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, the dunes comprise 2,000 acres and are part of Silver Lake State Park. Even though they are situated in the heart of the United States, the dunes will make you feel as if you’re roaming the sands of Arabia.

Activities at the park include swimming, canoeing and horseback riding along the beach, or hiking through the surrounding evergreen forests.

But a classic way to explore the dunes is through Mac Wood’s Dune Rides , a local company that for nearly a century has been taking visitors in open-top trucks for thrilling and informative rides through the sand.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Little Sable Point Lighthouse , an 1874 tower that was made more accessible to the public in 2010. Climb the tower and take in the lake, forests and dunes below.

These are the top 10 destinations for Labor Day travel

A popular U.S. destination for Labor Day travel is becoming even more desirable as an end-of-summer season vacation spot.

Seattle is the nation's top Labor Day weekend destination, according to AAA booking data, which found that the city jumped 30% in popularity this year for domestic travelers after also topping the list in 2023. 

Overall domestic travel is up by 9%, according to AAA booking data, while the cost of taking trips within the U.S. is down 2%. 

Americans traveling by car can expect to see savings on gas costs. The typical cost for gasoline now stands at about $3.50 a gallon, compared to the national average of $3.81 over Labor Day weekend a year ago. Overall demand for gas is down, driven in part by the pandemic enabling remote work, which has changed driving habits.

Fewer Americans are planning to travel internationally over Labor Day weekend this year compared to 2023, according to AAA data. While the cost of domestic trips are down slightly, the cost of international travel has jumped 11%, according to AAA.

As far as international destinations, countries in Europe are the most popular vacation spots for American travelers. Eight of the top ten international destinations booked through AAA are European cities. 

What is the best time to travel on Labor Day?

Airports and roads will start to get busy beginning on Thursday, Aug. 29, ahead of the Labor Day weekend. Roads are expected to be most congested in the afternoon and early evening on Thursday and Friday, according to Inrix, which provides transportation insights and data.

If you're traveling on Thursday or Friday, aim to hit the road in the morning to avoid traffic jams, experts say. If you aren't taking off until Saturday, it's best to wait until the afternoon to depart. 

"Drivers should expect the most severe traffic jams before the holiday weekend as commuters mix with travelers," Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at Inrix, said in a statement. "Monitoring traffic apps, local news stations, and 511 traveler information services may help drivers navigate around congestion and reduce driver frustration this Labor Day." 

Traffic is expected to be heaviest in the afternoon on Sunday and on Labor Day, Monday, September 2.

If sunshine is what you’re after, there are balmy beach destinations in the U.S. and Caribbean perfect for couples and families alike. Looking for more excitement this February? There’s always something happening in Las Vegas, and the city’s first Super Bowl is already generating buzz. In Mississippi, February brings Mardi Gras festivities and an opportunity to honor Black History Month at the state’s important sites.

Lake Forest, Illinois

Located about half an hour from O’Hare International Airport and 30 miles from downtown Chicago, this city on the shore of Lake Michigan is perfect for a romantic getaway . Browsing the boutiques in historic Market Square, strolling along tree-lined streets, or grabbing a snack at Sweet’s are a few ways to explore Lake Forest. Sure, February in Chicago is cold, but it’s the perfect excuse to cozy up in front of a fireplace with a warming drink. Bundle up and take the Metra from the historic train station to Chicago Union Station to tour some of the Windy City’s indoor attractions, like The Art Institute of Chicago.

Where to Stay: The Deer Path Inn offers English-style charm, afternoon tea, a pub, two restaurants, plush rooms, and an inviting lobby with fireplaces and gorgeous furnishings. During my recent stay, I enjoyed a tasting in the Hidden Wine Cellar and a wonderful cocktail-making session with Master Mixologist Jorge Centeno, the Inn’s “Chief Spirits Officer.”

Las Vegas, Nevada

There’s always something happening in Las Vegas, and with events like November’s Grand Prix and February’s Super Bowl LVIIl, visitors have more reasons to head to the “Neon Capital of the World.” On Feb. 11, Allegiant Stadium will host Nevada’s first Super Bowl. In addition to the events surrounding the game, entertainment seekers will have several top concerts to choose from, including the ongoing residencies from U2, Adele, and Christina Aguilera. 

Where to Stay: Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas just completed the first phase of a major renovation which included the guest rooms and suites, and Caesars Palace recently debuted its redesigned Colosseum Tower. The Durango Casino & Resort just opened off the Strip with over 200 rooms and suites, gaming, and a food hall.

Miami, Florida

If sunshine, beaches, and temperatures in the high 70s aren’t enough to get you to Miami in February , the city’s event lineup should get your attention. See what’s new at the International Boat Show (Feb.14-18), enjoy Art Wynwood (Feb.14-18), or dance to live music at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival (Feb.17-19). The South Beach Wine & Food Festival brings celebrity chefs, dinners, and wine tastings to its oceanfront location from Feb. 22-25. Miami is also perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day visit — consider booking a sunset cruise on Biscayne Bay or a couples massage at one of Miami’s spas. Be sure to stroll along historic Española Way, revitalized as a pedestrian-only street with restaurants, bars, and shops.

Where to Stay: In the up-and-coming Brickell area, stay at East Miami, conveniently located in the Brickell City Centre shopping mall. I’ve stayed at Esmé on Española Way and Pelican Hotel on lively Ocean Drive and recommend them both as well.

Santa Monica, California

While you may not want to jump into the Pacific (although you’ll see many wet-suited surfers doing just that), you can enjoy ocean views and stunning sunsets as you stroll along Santa Monica’s waterfront this February. Without summer’s crowds, you’ll have no trouble hopping on the rides at the Santa Monica Pier or scoring reservations at popular restaurants. The weather is ideal for exploring the Santa Monica Mountains where you can go hiking or horseback riding to take in the spectacular vistas. If it gets too chilly, head inside to check out the art galleries at Bergamot Station or learn about California history at the California Heritage Museum, housed in a historic building.

Where to Stay: Oceana Hotel, voted one of the best hotels in Los Angeles by T+L readers, is a suites-only boutique property. Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows is set on five acres overlooking the Pacific (and it’s home to the fabulous Soko Sushi, a personal favorite). 

Maui, Hawaii

Maui is welcoming tourists after the tragic wildfires that devastated the historic town of Lahaina. The loss of lives, homes, and buildings in West Maui is far from forgotten, but many residents depend on tourism for their livelihoods. Here, February weather is mild, and it’s the heart of whale-watching season when humpback whales migrate from Alaska to mate and give birth. Seeing them is a thrill that attracts visitors every year. And for a Valentine's Day trip, what could be more romantic than watching a spectacular Maui sunset together?

During my visit, I learned about the resort’s cultural offerings from Aunty Wendy, director of Hawaiian programs. Mississippi

Travelers can honor Black History Month by visiting significant historical sites that are part of  Mississippi’s rich heritage. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson is a good place to start, as it delves into stories of those who fought against social injustice with photos, timelines, and videos. Feb. 13 brings Mardi Gras, and the state’s early French influences show in its Gulf Coast towns with colorful parades, music, and vibrant costumes. 

Where to Stay: The Bella Downtown is set amid Biloxi’s live music venues.  Enjoy quaint Ocean Springs with a stay at Gulf Hills Hotel & Resort, with a past guest list that includes Elvis Presley and Al Capone.

Port Jervis, New York

This historic small town is an easy getaway about 80 miles northwest of New York City. The year-round Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is nearby, and in summer, there’s whitewater rafting, fishing, swimming, and camping. In winter, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice climbing take over, and downhill skiing is available less than 45 minutes away. “Northeast travelers and city dwellers will love a February trip to Port Jervis to experience the charming small town and winter scenery, with opportunities for cozy fireside dining and outdoor adventures like skiing or hiking on the pine tree-lined paths,” Lisa Karvellas, co-CEO and owner of Cedar Lakes Estate, said in an interview with T+L .  

Where to Stay: Cedar Lakes Estate, set on 500 acres, features cottages and cabins for Winter Weekends that include meals and activities. 

Quebec City, Canada

The 70th Quebec Winter Carnival is set for Jan. 25 to Feb. 11, 2024, with more than 100 activities for family fun, including night parades, snow sculptures, and the new Slide City for downhill excitement. Ice skating, an ice canoe race, laser games, and Bonhomme’s Ice Palace will delight your entire crew, even in frigid temperatures.

Where to Stay: Québec offers many places to stay, but for a unique experience, consider Hôtel de Glace, the only ice hotel in North America. Guests are given sleeping bags, insulating sheets, fireplaces, and hot tubs to stay warm while it’s around 23 degrees Fahrenheit in their rooms.

Loreto, Mexico

Dry weather in the high 70s makes February a great time to visit Loreto, but the main attraction is the arrival of the blue whales during their winter migration. The largest animals on Earth, blue whales migrate each year to feed, mate, and give birth in the warm waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park. Other whale species, dolphins, sea lions, and marine turtles also make their home in Loreto Bay. Located on the eastern coast of Baja California, Loreto is about six hours north of Los Cabos. The charming town features historic Spanish missions, beaches, restaurants, and an esplanade for seaside strolling. 

Where to Stay: Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto welcomes families with spacious rooms, a kids club, an 18-hole golf course, a spa, five pools, restaurants, and an optional all-inclusive plan. “Loreto is known as a year-round destination, but February is an extra-special time for travelers looking to experience the magic of our incredible underwater wildlife,” Villa del Palmar general manager Miguel Lince told T+L. 

Courchevel, France

“In my opinion, the best ski destination in Europe is Courchevel. It offers the most variety of any ski resort in the world,” according to luxury travel planner and T+L Top Travel Advisor Jonathan Alder . The resort area includes a ski school, trails ranging from beginner to advanced, and many properties with ski-in, ski-out access. Family-friendly features include the new Aquamotion swimming and leisure complex with swimming pools, slides, river rapids, a climbing wall, and a spa. Courchevel is located in the Three Valleys ski area in southeast France; four international airports are about two hours from the resort (in Geneva, Grenoble, Chambery, and Lyon), and guests can also arrive by train with connections from London and Paris.

Where to Stay: Alder’s recommendations are L’Apogee, with a full-service ski valet, ski-in, ski-out access, and five-star service and Aman Le Melezin, a boutique ski lodge that provides the utmost luxury.

Dominican Republic

Located on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean with nearly 1,000 miles of coastline. Its gorgeous beaches are the main draw for many travelers, but there are other diverse landscapes to explore. Adventure travelers can soar over rainforests, explore deep in ancient caverns, or take river rafting trips. Snorkeling, deep sea diving, and boating to nearby islands are more things to do during your Dominican Republic trip. Francisco Camps, area managing director for Meliá Hotels International Punta Cana, suggests visiting during mid-February’s Carnival. “From the colorful costumes to the joyous celebrations taking over the streets, Carnival is one of the most unique times for travelers to visit and immerse themselves in the DR’s vibrant culture.”

Where to Stay: For a stress-free trip, choose one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic . Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort in Punta Cana, an elegant beachfront resort, recently unveiled a $40 million renovation. The family-friendly resort also offers The Reserve, a separate adults-only section. 

The Bahamas

Family vacations, romantic getaways, and diving trips are all reasons to head to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. The swimming pigs of the Exumas are a visitor favorite, and travelers can find secluded beaches and uninhabited cays during boating excursions. The islands are paradise for divers, with coral reefs, caves, blue holes, and shipwrecks to explore. And no visit is complete without trying local Bahamian specialties like conch fritters, Johnny cakes, and fresh seafood. With several international airports on the islands, visitors have lots of ways to get here. 

Where to Stay: Atlantis Paradise Island features five hotels in one resort, an array of restaurants and bars, a water park, golf, a marina, and more. The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort on Paradise Island offers upscale guest rooms, bungalows, and large villa residences, perfect for families or groups.

South Australia

With wildlife encounters, rugged Outback, and amazing wine, South Australia has a ton to offer visitors. Adelaide, the capital city, offers entertainment, dining, and Adelaide Fringe, a month of art and culture beginning on Feb. 16, 2024. Known for outstanding wines, the Barossa wine region is less than an hour from Adelaide. Kangaroo Island, a ferry ride away from the mainland, boasts rugged beauty, wildlife, and (of course!) kangaroos. Plus, February is summer in South Australia, so you can expect warm weather. 

Where to Stay: Two years after it was razed in the island’s bushfires, the luxurious Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island just reopened this month. The Louise, set among the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, offers 15 private villa-style suites.

Dolomites, Italy

Located in northeastern Italy, the Dolomites are beautiful in summer — and even better during the winter. During the snowy months, the mountains — a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site — attract skiers and snowboarders from around the world. One of the many valley towns, Cortina d’Ampezzo, will host the 2026 Winter Olympics. The ski season runs from about December until March, so February is ideal if you want to hit the slopes. About a three-hour drive from the international airport in Venice, the Dolomites border Austria, which is apparent in the language and cuisine.

Where to Stay: Hotels, resorts, home rentals, and condos are available. Alpin Garden in Ortisei is a charming inn with a spa and daily guided ski experiences. La Perla in Corvara offers a variety of rooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
