Monster’s Legendary Warped Tour Water Is Now for Sale to the Public

Remember Monster Energy's "Tour Water" from the Vans Warped Tour ? If not, we'll go ahead and tell you right now that the water was often packaged in cans that, from afar, looked just like Monster Energy Drinks. But it was not. It was straight-up water in a can.

Ergo, many concertgoers saw their favorite rock, punk and metal artists slamming what looked like energy drinks onstage at Warped over the years. But, we assure you, it was just canned water! And it was only ever available to the entertainers, not the general public.

But that's all changed now! Monster has released Tour Water to the public . However, the cans don't look like one pictured above — they sport even more colorful vintage Warped Tour graphics.

Calling it the "Original Backstage Water," Monster writes on its site , " 'Pure clean water is the Elixir of Life / Put it in a can please, that would be nice / We need it now or the buses won't roll, the bands they won't play / That, my friend, would be a very bad day.' So said Kevin Lyman , Circus Master of the Punked Out Vans Warped Tour Anno Domini 2003."

The beverage company continues, "Of course, we stepped up and made the original Tour Water. We've been making it for our events, artists and athletes ever since, but never made it available for our greatest fans. Until now that is…"

Monster explains, "We tracked down great tasting water from local sources to cut down the freight effect. Packed it in infinitely recyclable aluminum cans and dug up some of the original Tour Water art for the can graphics, just to make it look sexy. It doesn't give you energy but WTF you gotta drink water sometimes or else you're gonna die."

Drink up, my friends. Drink and pretend like you're on the Warped Tour!

How Do Warped Tour Bands Chug Energy Drinks In The Sun All Day Long?

If you check out the artists on this summer's Warped Tour, you might notice them drinking a LOT of Monster Energy Drink -- like, more caffeine than most of us could handle in 90-degree heat -- and perhaps even bathing in it:

But you can't always believe your eyes, because Reddit user SmackyRichardson noticed a slight difference in the bands' Monster cans versus the ones distributed to fans:

Imgur: SmackyRichardson

It's called Monster Tour Water, and it's only available backstage -- a Monster employee tells us "it's never been sold anywhere" -- thus making it a highly sought-after collector's item. (Right now it's going for $13.99 on eBay .) But SmackyRichardson feels it's a health hazard:

"Kind of dangerous in a way, as anyone who was actually chugging that many Monsters in 100 degree heat would more than likely kick the bucket. Warped tour is full of impressionable tweens who want to look as cool as their idols onstage."

Not everybody agreed with her theory, and this is actually nothing new -- Warped Tour has had branded water for at least a decade:

Kyles Monster Energy Collection

As one Reddit user explained , it's not worth getting THAT excited about:

"I work for Monster and we drink tour water at most events we do. If people do notice, they are so intrigued and want one. Its just water in a can, man..."

But if you don't read the fine print, it may come as a shock :

"I remember discovering that accidentally when I worked my first Warped Tour. Popped one open backstage and went to enjoy a sweet sip... Even when the resulting taste is not a strong one, it's always shocking when you expect one flavor and something very different hits your mouth. Spit it out and freaked out, then read the can."

Some people are calling it a marketing conspiracy:

But the fans and bands seem pretty cool with it:

Old-school political punks might be turned off by the caffeinated sponsorship, but hey, at least H20 is healthier than most of the stuff Sid Vicious put into his body, right?

What is Monster tour water?

When someone asks what Monster tour water is, the answer might seem confusing. Is it an energy drink or some carbonated beverage? What is monster tour water?

The can of monster tour water contains just water with commercial branding outside the can. So there is no energy drink or unique beverage inside.

It might seem weird for athletes and musicians – extremely active professionals – to be drinking an energy drink. But branded water isn’t out of the question for the rich and famous.

Monster tour water is a novelty item for people. Below, we will delve into a bit of the history behind this choice.

Monster’s branding masterclass

It doesn’t matter whether you are watching the UFC, a BMX show, or at a major gig. Likely, you will see cans of Monster near the show’s stars.

These cans are just as much for show as for what’s inside. However, the artists or athletes most likely have an endorsement deal with Monster themselves.

After all, Monster Energy is the second-largest energy drink manufacturer in the US. The company has a 39% share of the energy drink industry in North America.

It’s not surprising that the Californian company set up plenty of endorsements. Sports stars and musicians to are prime targets to advertise its drinks.

You don’t have to look far for Monster Energy branding, considering they have deals with:

  • Monster Jam
  • Warped Tour
  • Download Festival

Given how many people attend these sporting and musical events, you can see how quickly Monster grows.

Monster’s musical presence – How did they get into Warped Tour?

Diving deeper into Monster’s involvement in the music world, they are seen all over the place. Several major music festivals themselves have been involved with Monster directly.

The most apparent involvement has been with the Vans Warped Tour . Monster provided free water in a Monster branded can to all performers throughout the 2- month-long tour.

Fans saw these cans in all major American cities. It is an excellent way to advertise a product to the masses. Alongside that,

Monster was one of the primary sponsors at the UK’s Download Festival, slowly launching worldwide. Monster not only provides similar cans as Warped Tour and sponsored one of the stages at the UK festival.

With Download expanding to multiple European sites, Japan, and Australia, it took Monster’s branding worldwide. This advertising added further reach to Monster’s products.

The company themselves are now worth over $6 billion . The company is one of the big three energy drink providers globally.

Why is Monster Tour Water not an energy drink?

The novelty of a Monster can on stage can be confusing. You might be concerned if a musician guzzles down several cans in a 2-hour set.

The water is just placed into a Monster branded cup to give the impression to the public that famous people run off energy drinks.

It acts as a significant PR boost and easily tricks the adoring fans. These fans might believe that energy drinks give bands the extra energy to jump around on stage for several hours.

The deception makes the tour water a novelty item. It is the fans desperately want to collect. It’s why packs of these can sell for a ridiculously high price.

The health concerns of Monster Energy

Regulators are putting more pressure on the potential side effects of energy drinks. So why would active people put themselves at risk?

Along with added caffeine exposure, some of the potential problems with excessive energy drink consumption could include:

  • High sugar levels
  • Heaps of unnatural preservatives
  • Other chemical products

The novelty of owning Monster Tour Water

Strangely, a branded can has become a collector’s item, but that has become the case in recent years.

People think that getting hold of souvenirs such as a Monster tour water brings extra street cred to their friends.

After all, it could quickly be sold by someone as having James Hetfield, or Dave Grohl touched it. This feature brings fans flocking to get a hold of a can.

Previously, you couldn’t buy these cans from shops. They were only accessible from behind the scenes at festivals, making them rarer.

However, the novelty obsession could end with Monster planning to launch Tour Water to the masses. Revealed in late 2022, they planned to offer the novelty product in two forms – spring and still water.

As part of a wider diversified launch of product s, the tour water will come in four flavours and comes at a time where the energy drink giant plans to also add alcoholic beverages to its lineup.

Setting the wrong impression

As the risks of excessive energy drink consumption are known, Monster’s future promotion is questioned. Many cans now carry clear warnings about how much should be drunk and who shouldn’t drink them.

In particular, the debate about whether teenagers should be drinking them is enormous. Teenagers are one of the most impressionable audiences around.

It’s a start contrast to the truth. Having product placement on stage puts teens in a difficult position. After all, many want to become rock stars. Energy drinks are a cool thing to drink as a result.

Some governments are considering putting age limits on who can buy them.

There have been substantial anti-energy drink movements in both the US and the UK. These movements want to ban anyone under the age of 16 from buying energy drinks.

It’s a debate that rages on, even if no governments have yet to force the energy drink industry into tighter regulation.

Conclusion- what is Monster Tour Water all about?

It won’t be a complete shock when people learn what Monster tour water is all about. It is a huge PR stunt for just a can of water and a great way to get Monster in the eyes of festival-goers.

However, their exclusivity of being an item only available behind the scenes creates an aura of mystique about getting hold of a pack and bragging about it.

Even though the advertising and deals may promote the wrong image to teens and intensify the energy drink debate, it doesn’t stop fans from wanting a can or two.

When people ponder what Monster tour water is, they will learn about one of music’s most brilliant advertising staples of recent years.

Monster: Crowded 2023 Innovation Slate Includes Tour Water, Clean Energy

  • Posted 2 Hours Ago --> Jan. 19, 2023 at 11:55 AM
  • New Products

monster tour water

Monster Energy Company unveiled its full 2023 innovation pipeline during its annual investor meeting webcast on Wednesday, showcasing its ambitions in the better-for-you energy, alcohol, and canned water categories.

In a presentation hosted by Monster co-CEOs Rodney Sacks and Hilton Schlosberg, Monster discussed a variety of new lines and flavor extensions planned to launch in the upcoming months, including Monster Zero Sugar and malt beverage alcohol line The Beast Unleashed, which is being managed by Monster subsidiary CANarchy, both of which were previously announced at the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) 2022 show in October.

An analysis of the presentation by Goldman Sachs Equity Research noted that convenience channel retailers are broadly optimistic about the Zero Sugar launch, with several stating during the firm’s most recent Beverage Bytes survey that they intend to give the line incremental shelf and cooler space.

For The Beast Unleashed, Sacks said during the presentation that the line is rolling out this month in six states and will expand nationwide in waves, with additional activations expected to grow the footprint in March and April followed by subsequent launches in the summer. The 6% ABV drinks will be available in three flavors in individual 16 oz. cans – Mean Green, White Haze and Peach Perfect – as well as a fourth flavor, Scary Berries, available in 12 oz. variety 12-packs, targeted toward grocery and big box accounts. Sacks said Scary Berries “will probably” launch in a 16 oz. can in the future.

“For the moment we’re focusing on getting shelf space for the three main SKUs and then the variety pack,” he said.

Marketing for The Beast Unleashed will include event marketing, including NASCAR promotions, as well as influencer and digital marketing campaigns.

The company is also continuing to push its non-energy innovations with Tour Water, which Monster has produced since 2003 as an exclusive for its athlete and musician partners. As a retail product. The brand will be managed by CANarchy’s non-alc division, Sacks said. Tour Water will be available in 19.2 oz. cans targeted to the convenience channel and in 12-packs of 16 oz. cans, which will launch in grocery and big box stores. Schlosberg noted that the water launch “has the blessing of the Coca-Cola Company,” and that it could potentially be distributed through the Coke network at some point in the future.

New products are also coming to the company’s Reign performance energy brand with Reign Storm, a “Clean Energy” line with flavors including Valencia Orange, Peach Nectarine, Kiwi Blend and Harvest Grape available in 12 oz. cans.

Reign, which launched in 2019, was seen as an answer to the rise of Bang Energy – even leading Bang-owner VPX to file a trade dress infringement lawsuit against Monster. Now, as newer performance energy brands have brought more female and health-conscious consumers into the energy category, Sacks said that Storm features a “less aggressive” can design with a white background intended to broaden Reign’s consumer demographic reach.

Reign will also add a Tropical Storm flavor, previously announced at NACS 2022, in 16 oz. cans on its core Total Body Fuel line.

Other 2023 innovations include new flavors across existing lines including Monster Reserve Kiwi Strawberry, Monster Ultra Strawberry Dreams, Java Monster Cafe Latte, Monster Energy Nitro Cosmic Peach, and Monster Rehab Wild Berry Tea.

While Goldman Sachs was bullish on Monster’s broad innovation pipeline, the report expressed concern that the “sheer quantity” of new products this year could be potentially too much.

“Overall while we see some potential execution risk given the sheer quantity of innovation this year, on top of a business that has gotten increasingly complex over the last few years, we are optimistic that the company should be able to mitigate some of this risk as some of this innovation will be managed by it is new Monarchy Beverage Company which will leverage several seasoned [Monster] employees and via CANarchy which manages and fulfills the bottling of The Beast Unleashed,” Goldman reported.

In the 13-weeks ending December 31, Monster reported total sales up 11% to $1.73 billion, with the Monster brand growing 10.6% to $1.48 billion while the NOS (+17.3%) and Reign (+9.2%) saw positive growth as well. Full Throttle declined -0.6%, accounting for just $26.2 million in sales.

Beyond the innovation pipeline, Monster also projected a positive outlook for manufacturing expenses, stating that input costs for packaging and other raw materials are coming under control. Goldman noted that this “suggests Q4 gross margins should sequentially improve yet again.” While costs of aluminum and freight are easing, the company did note that the prices of other key supplies, including sugar, are rising.

On retail pricing, the company said it will explore more potential price raises later this year. Despite price increases last year, Goldman noted that most retailers said they have seen little pushback from consumers.

“That said, however, a number of retailers did note decreased demand for multi-packs, and conversely increased demand for smaller can sizes and singles, as consumers are looking to minimize their total cost outlay in the challenging economic environment,” Goldman stated. “All in, 33% of respondents have seen volume impacts related to the recent price increases.”

Monster Tour Water is now being sold in stores! Well, to be honest, I don’t know why I’m excited. I didn’t know it was a thing at the Vans Warped Tour that folks backstage drank until a few weeks ago. Also, it’s not caffeinated. I’m not even sure it was a thing in 1998 when I went to my only Vans Warped Tour concert to listen to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Blink-182, and Reel Big Fish. (Spotted by @ReneBarba89 at Food-4-Less.)

Hah…I remember my years of Warped Tour when it was Yoo-Hoo that was the sponsor drink. lol.

Pardon my naivete…but, just what ARE these? As in, what do they taste like? Well water does NOT sound desirable, to me, in the slightest.

It’s just water in a cool can.

haha…that’s what I suspected. Thanks, for the intel, Marvo!
