Adventures in Costa Maya: Salsa & Salsa and Beach Break Cruise Excursion

When choosing excursions for our most recent Western Caribbean Carnival cruise trip, I knew I wanted to find a fun excursion for just me and my husband.

I’m a former dancer and he loves to cook, so when I read about the Salsa & Salsa and Beach Break excursion in Costa Maya, Mexico , I knew this was the right experience for us. Salsa dancing lessons, a hands-on salsa making (and eating!) class, margaritas and plenty of beach time!

Adventures in Costa Maya- Salsa, Salsa and Beach Break - blog

As we met up with our excursion group just outside the ship, I could tell we were in for fun as soon as we met our guide, Francisco. He let us know that the Salsa & Salsa and Beach Break excursion was three hours long, but we could enjoy the beach area as long as we’d like once the salsa portion of our day was complete.

So, off we went aboard our luxury motorcoach (seriously, the nicest excursion transportation I’ve ever seen) for a 15-minute ride to a beachfront resort where a room was set aside for our dining demonstration and salsa class.

Salsa and Salsa Shore Excursion - Bowl

Francisco was our teacher for the salsa and guacamole demonstration. He walked us through making two salsa dips and some fantastic guacamole. We learned a bit about the traditional ways of making salsa and local traditions too. With unlimited chips and delicious margaritas, it was fun making our own snacks. And I certainly helped myself to each of them!

We ended up purchasing one of the beautiful bowls, it was a great souvenir for us and we’ve used it many times since we’ve been home. It is a great reminder of our fun day in Costa Maya .

Salsa and Salsa Excursion - Guacaomole

With plenty of margaritas and salsa consumed, we moved on to the fun salsa dancing lessons! We learned a few basic moves and a short line dance that reminded me of the Electric Slide. A few dances involved a partner, but you could have easily done it on your own too.

Thanks to the margaritas, there were tons of laughs, bad dancers and it was the highlight of our day.

Salsa and Salsa Excursion - Dancing

After the dancing fun, Francisco passed out vouchers for taxis back to the ship, as we were free to leave at any time and also take advantage of the beach too. With access to the restrooms and amenities at the resort, the beach was just steps away.

There were local vendors nearby selling handmade goods and the beach was beautiful. An adjacent boardwalk made it easy to admire the beach and check out the local scene too.

Salsa and Salsa Excursion - Beach

Since the girls were still on the ship playing at Camp Ocean , we took a quick walk along the beach and headed back to the ship. Looking back, I wished we had spent more time exploring the area. The girls had a blast at camp and we could have spent more time at the beach.

My only regret of the fantastic Salsa & Salsa and Beach Break excursion  is that we didn’t receive recipes of the salsa dishes and the guacamole. Sure, it was mainly just tomatoes, onions and peppers, but it would have been fun to completely recreate them once we arrived back home.

Salsa and Salsa Excursion - Food

The good news – we have a beautiful, new salsa dish to remember our fun day in Costa Maya and we’ve used it often. The Salsa & Salsa and Beach Break excursion was definitely one of the best ones we’ve experienced over the years. I loved that it was hands-on and so interactive. While it was relaxing and fun, I especially loved that we ‘did’ something with our time off the ship.

I’m thankful for our afternoon date away from the ship, we made some great memories together and I’m already excited to plan another excursion date for our next cruise.

We did it a few years back.  We had fun making the different salsa's etc., but it was cheaper then than it is now.  We didn't have much time on the beach if I am remembering correctly.

10 Best Mediterranean Cruise Lines Our Readers Love

A cruise is a great way to explore the Mediterranean’s diverse culture, captivating history, stunning beauty, and of course, delectable cuisine — all while unpacking your suitcase just once. Our readers’ top 10 offers a variety of cruise experiences sure to suit every style.

1. Viking Cruises (Winner)

Viking’s goal is to immerse passengers in each destination through uniquely curated excursions and onboard presentations. Viking’s ocean ships are designed to access almost any port, giving you more time on the ground to explore with at least one free shore excursion included at every port — a Viking signature.

The onboard atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant with Viking’s minimalist, but beautiful, Scandinavian design throughout. Passengers love it because they’re not nickel-and-dimed once on board. The price you see includes free Wi-Fi, beer, wine, and soft drinks with meals, dining at any restaurant, and access to Viking’s unique Nordic Spa, with its exhilarating Snow Grotto, while onboard.

There are additional paid excursions offered at each port as well, and you can upgrade your beverage package to include additional wine and liquor options if you wish. One thing to know: All Viking guests must be 18 years or older.

2. Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean sails several sizes of ships through the Mediterranean with anywhere from 2,700 to nearly 5,000 guests. While the goal in the Med is to get off the ship and explore the unique cultural options while in port, Royal Caribbean creates an environment where you don’t really need to leave the ship if you don’t want to.

The ships have an exhaustive list of onboard experiences including nightly live entertainment, specialty dining options, areas to play sports like pickleball, pools, and everything from salsa dancing to jewelry-making classes. The larger ships simply come with more to do, for everyone in the family, including waterslides, roller skating, and even bumper cars.

If you’re considering a Royal Caribbean cruise with grandkids, check out these tips .

3. Holland America Line

Holland America is marking a major milestone this year celebrating its 150th Anniversary . In the late 1800s, Holland first sailed immigrants looking for a new start from Europe to America. In fact, 10 percent of all immigrants sailed over on what was then called the Netherlands-American  Steamship Company. Today, the cruise line hosts Americans, and of course other nationalities, on its ships in the Mediterranean showing off the region’s vibrant and diverse cultures with thousands of unique excursions .

While the experiences off the ship are amazing, passengers also love the delicious cuisine on board . Holland America also has what they call “ Collectors’ Voyages ” allowing guests to book back-to-back trips, so you only have to unpack once, but enjoy twice as many destinations.

4. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises describes itself as a “relaxed luxury resort at sea.” The cruise line provides a modern, yet dignified experience on board. Experience distinguished cuisine and cocktails, Broadway-quality shows and live music, plus enrichment and educational options that satisfy even the most inquisitive passenger.

To top it off, Celebrity focuses on exceptional service, leaving passengers wanting nothing more.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line , or NCL, is known for bringing “freestyle cruising” to the industry. That means cruising the way you want, on your schedule, to enjoy your vacation, your way. You can leave your tux at home, there aren’t any set dinner times, and you’re not assigned to dine with the same group every night.

NCL also pays attention to solo travelers with studio rooms specifically designed for them. The set-up helps solo travelers avoid the dreaded single supplement.

Of course, NCL also offers quality entertainment, experiences, and cuisine.

6. Disney Cruise Line

With Disney in the name, you know kids are going to love a Disney Cruise . Stories have been told of parents losing their children to the amazing, kids-only, onboard experiences day after day. While being a kid-at-heart always helps, Disney’s adults-only areas and attention to detail are what keep parents, and even travelers without children, coming back.

It’s obviously not all about Mickey when you’re exploring destinations with such a richness of culture as those in the Mediterranean. Disney’s meticulous service transitions seamlessly to its excursions offered on shore.

7. Oceania Cruises

One of the luxury cruise lines on the list, Oceania Cruises offers personalized service, a refined atmosphere on board, and amazing dining . In fact, they’ve trademarked the phrase “ The Finest Cuisine at Sea .” Famed French Chef Jacques Pepin has been the cruise line’s executive culinary director since 2003 and his attention to culinary detail shows in every dish presented.

Oceania also maximizes its time in port with extended stays, immersive “Go Local” and “Go Green” excursions, and small group sizes. There’s evening entertainment, shopping, and even a casino on board, so you’ll need a variety of outfits to transition from day to night .

Oceania’s ships hold between 684 and 1,250 guests depending on the ship you choose.

8. Princess Cruises

The original Love Boat , Princess Cruises prides itself on its “ Local Connections ” experience — pairing passengers with locals in each port to learn about the region from those who live there. The immersive experience on its Mediterranean cruises continues on board with regional dancers, chefs, and musicians.

There are also plenty of dining, cocktail, and entertainment opportunities on board, including productions from Wicked Composer Stephen Schwartz.

Princess plans to debut two new ships in the Mediterranean in 2025: Sun Princess and Star Princess . Both ships will carry more than 4,000 passengers.

9. Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises is known as a small ship leader in the industry with its vessels holding between a mere 148 and 350 passengers. Their small ships allow passengers time in ports that larger ships can’t access, like Old Town Dubrovnik in Croatia. One unique experience when you sail with Windstar is the opportunity to visit local markets with the ship’s chef. Windstar also partners with the James Beard Foundation, bringing the expertise of some of the most sought-after chefs in the world to your daily dining experience.

Another special treat, Windstar’s Watersports Platform gives you access to the Mediterranean’s beautiful blue water straight from the ship. Kayak, snorkel, stand-up paddleboard, or just jump right in.

Passengers love Windstar’s comfortable elegance and immersive shore excursions.

10. Celestyal Cruises

It may be number 10 on the list, but Celestyal Cruises is number one in the hearts of passengers looking for an authentic Greek cruising experience. In fact, the cruise line prides itself on being Greek cruising experts. Greek culture is part of everything they do. Learn a bit of the Greek language or a traditional dance while on board. Enjoy authentic cuisine and cocktails at every meal, then take the experience even deeper with shore excursions carefully curated by its experts.

Celestyal Cruises also explores other areas of the eastern Mediterranean including Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, and Israel.

Finally, hear it straight from the expert — one of Celestyal’s seasoned captains shared his eight essential tips for cruising the Greek Islands with us.

Just got excited because I (out of nowhere) remembered how delicious the chips and salsa is at the grill. One more thing to add to my list of things to look forward to! :)

I hope I had something to do with that. Well, not just me but many others making the same comment.

Back when they issued comment cards, on every cruise I took for over 4 years, I would comment that they needed to offer salsa on the salad and breakfast bar. I always eat salsa with eggs and know that this is a common practice. I just couldn't believe that there was never any salsa to be seen.

Salsa is less expensive than jams, syrups, and peanut butter, all items on the breakfast buffet.

Imagine my happiness the first cruise I took that had salsa. I know it had to be several people making the request, but for once I felt that my opinion had accounted for something through the comment card.

LOL! Yeah, that's a pretty random thought, but I do know what you mean. Myself, I can't wait until that first late-night BLT from room service! ;)

Here is a great big thank you from me!!! :)

Yes, totally random...

I have read many times how everyone loves the BLT from room service. Looks like I am going to have to try it.

I hope yours is everything you hoped it would be!

Order 2. Put the bacon on one when you get it. I do that to most of the sandwiches. The salads from room service are good too. The chips are not so good. The shrimp salad is yummy.

Too bad I have to wait for 24 more days!

Oh Yeah! Especially good at 2 AM after being in the casino for a few hours. Eat and sleep in!

My wife, whatsername, had me convinced the "salsa" was a dance. Had me taking lessons for 2 years. Now I learn it's food. Better late than never. Fortunately, I already know how to chew !

now I am hungry!

Hmmmm, as an afterthought, can anyone confirm: bosa nova, tango and waltz are dances and not foods ?

That's my fav thing from the Grill! 18 days...

Can I get chips and salsa delivered through room service? Today's happy thought could be room service to my 4J and then having a picnic on the secret deck with my hubby ::swooon::

I like your style!

Mine is the chicken fingers

Amen to that!

When I was on the Dream back in May, I must have missed the chips and salsa from the grill. However, I was NOT happy that they didn't have chicken fingers there though. I don't understand why they don't have them on all ships:(. I sure hope the Legend has chicken fingers at the grill. Will definitely get the chips and salsa!!

One thing I did enjoy was the chips and salsa on the BBQ on the Lanai while on the Dream. I hope they are the same as the ones at the grill.

Cant wait until we board the liberty . breakfast Burritos ,tacos and salsa.Anyone know if they have Guac

MADRID (AP) — Spain will on Thursday deport more than 60 Bolivians who arrived last week by cruise ship in the northeastern port of Barcelona but were not allowed to disembark because their visas were false.

The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived will be flown to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. The plane will be paid for by MSC Cruises, which owns the ship in which they arrived from Brazil.

Four members of a family with Spanish relatives will be allowed to enter Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Bolivian passengers had false visas to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries.

The Bolivians’ visa problems meant that the cruise ship with more than 1,000 passengers was stuck for two days in Barcelona and unable to continue on its route in the Mediterranean Sea until the situation was resolved.

The cruise ship set sail after the Bolivians were temporarily accommodated in another boat while police interviewed them.

MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.

Can You Take Days Off Without Pto?

Yes, by using holidays, weekends and unpaid time for vacation.

By Robert Schrader | Published on April 19, 2024

For those who prioritize adventure in their lives, no amount of exploration is enough. As the year progresses, travel-lovers might wish they had more paid time off while asking themselves, "Can you take days off without PTO?" For some, this is a key question because of the sheer number of items they hope to check off their bucket lists. Others want to be able to hit the road — or the open sea — without depleting days they need for family holidays such as Thanksgiving. Read on for strategies to maximize your travel experiences without depleting your vacation time.

The Great Wall of China, Beijing

How Much Unpaid Time Off Can I Take?

How much time you can take off work depends not only on your company and the terms of your employment but also on the needs of your team and the demands of your job. If you're an accountant, taking unpaid time off might be a taller order in March than it is after tax day has passed. Likewise, if you work on a small team and have a colleague out on leave, you might not be able to take unpaid time off at all. Some jobs may also let you work on a company holiday and use that time off on another date that fits better into your vacation plans.

When you ask, "Can you take days off without PTO?" the answer isn't always a clear-cut "yes" or "no." It could be that your unpaid time off is conditional. Perhaps you'll need to finish a project before you go, make yourself available for a virtual presentation or be willing to answer client emails if the volume becomes too much for your co-workers. Finally, your supervisor will probably consider how much time you've had off before granting your request. If you've been absent a lot (whether due to an illness, childcare responsibilities or for bereavement), it might be more difficult to get time off.

Leverage Long Weekends And Holidays

One of the best travel tips, regardless of whether you take paid or unpaid time off, is to always leverage weekends and holidays. For example, let's say your job gives you Good Friday and the Monday after Easter off. By adding a day or two on either side of this window (whether paid or unpaid), you can give yourself a vacation of up to a week in length, even though you're only taking off a few days. This can be valuable if there's a limit to the number of days you can take off at any one time.

If you cannot take unpaid time off, you might still be able to take a short trip. There are plenty of places within the United States (as well as in Canada and Mexico) where you can jet off on a Thursday or Friday and get back in time for work on Monday or Tuesday morning. Depending on your ability to overcome jet lag and what flights depart from the city you live in, you might even be able to swing a weekend trip to Europe.

You can also choose to take a cruise if you only have a long weekend or holiday weekend available. There are many cruises (especially to the Caribbean , Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Coast of Mexico) that last three or four days. Whether over a holiday weekend, such as Memorial Day or Labor Day, or because of a "summer Friday," this can be plenty of time to get away.

At the end of the day, enjoying a vacation without taking time off is not as insurmountable a challenge as it may seem, particularly if you can strike a balance between relaxation and productivity. Again, there's also the possibility of leveraging flexible work arrangements in order to convince your boss to agree to one of your proposals. That said, it's advisable to set clear boundaries about what work you will and won't do during your vacation.

Don't Forget About School And Other Jobs

If you're a solo traveler, planning your next trip can be simple. If you manage to get time off, whether paid or unpaid, you can make your trip happen. If you're traveling with a partner, however, or with school-age children, you'll need to do more preparation.

Can you take days off without PTO? This is a relatively easy question when referring to a job, but not always when you need to factor in children's school schedules. It usually makes sense to first plan trips around school holidays before you try to schedule your own time off from work. Some schools have stricter absence policies than others, so you'll want to check the regulations before you book flights and a sailing. It's easier to take a preschooler out of school than it is to yank a high school student away from their academics and activities (especially one with sports or other commitments), so take any kids' ages and responsibilities into consideration.

Make A Short Trip Feel Long

Even if you won't be able to cruise for many days, there are ways to make your vacation feel longer. One great travel tip to improve relaxation is to fully disconnect. While you might decide to purchase an onboard Wi-Fi package in case of emergencies, turning off notifications (especially for emails and text-based services) will remove connections to many obligations from your life, allowing you to live more fully in the present moment.

You can also use the days of your cruise as an opportunity to enhance daily routines you need to stay focused and healthy at home. For example, while you might continue to wake up early on your cruise to exercise or meditate, you can also indulge in daytime naps whenever you feel like it, or have a cocktail — or two! — by the pool. Small indulgences taken steadily throughout your trip can make the travel experience feel like more of a break from the ordinary.

Choosing your destination carefully is also a travel tip that can help your vacation feel more relaxing. Picking an itinerary with more chill time and less sightseeing makes a big difference. Spending a few days on a beachy, island paradise — especially if you call on Perfect Day at CocoCay® and book an overwater cabana, where anything can be delivered to your lounge chair the moment you want it — can make you feel like you're halfway around the globe in the South Pacific instead of right off the coast of the mainland United States. In turn, booking a European cruise — with plenty of sightseeing and historical sites to explore — might make you feel accomplished but not any more refreshed than when you left home.

Even if you only end up having a few days at sea, that's plenty of time to find amazing adventures. From modifying routines and getting yourself into cruise mode to silencing distractions (especially those related to work) and being strategic about the destination you choose, the will to travel is often more important for an unforgettable experience than the particulars of the trip.

Your Next Getaway Is Closer Than You Think

As you browse cruise options, you might ask yourself "can you take days off without PTO?" Another travel tip to consider is taking partial days off or working during business hours on your cruise and having evenings free to dine, connect and celebrate with your partner or loved ones. Some jobs might even allow you to shift your hours when you're traveling, getting up early or working late in order to take advantage of time in cruise ports with your family or friends. This can be especially beneficial when you're working around school vacations and taking your own job requirements into consideration.

As a result, the answer to the question is "yes" in most cases. The key, no matter your circumstances, is being strategic — both in terms of using weekends and holidays to your advantage, as well as using your time wisely as you travel. Your next trip doesn't have to wait until next year.
