We had an absolute blast on the excursion. 

We spotted many humpback whales and spinner dolphins leaping out of the water. 

The team running it knew their stuff about all the different sea creatures.

The boat was comfortable, and the whole crew was super friendly.

I’ve visited Hawaii more than 40 times, and many of those trips have been to Maui. It’s one of my favorite Hawaiian islands, and I have always loved going to Maui with my kids.

While Maui has the reputation of being a hot spot for honeymoons and babymoons , most of my trips to Maui have included a baby , toddler , or kids of other ages.

I figured I’d gather up my knowledge for this complete guide to Maui with kids!

Maui with a Baby

So many people go to Maui when they are pregnant for their babymoon, but it can also be the perfect place to go after their baby is born.

Babies are pretty portable, and you can still have a fun Hawaiian vacation.

WHERE TO STAY ON MAUI WITH A BABY

You can really stay anywhere in Maui with a baby. Lahaina , Kaanapali, and Wailea are great areas if you want to spend most of your time relaxing at a resort .

My biggest tip for visiting Maui with a baby is to splurge a bit on your accommodations, especially if this is your first baby.

You will probably be spending more time in your room than you think. Between naps, early bedtimes, nursing or bottle feeding, etc, it can eat up a chunk of your vacation.

So, I suggest finding a place where you can put your baby in a separate area to sleep. That could mean an extra bedroom or living room. Or, you can put your baby to sleep in your room and then enjoy the living space in the evenings.

Another option is to get a hotel room that has a lanai that overlooks something beautiful or where you can walk out to the pool. Then, you can enjoy dinner or drinks on the lanai while your baby sleeps inside.

WHAT TO DO ON MAUI WITH A BABY

If your baby will sleep in the car, use their nap time to drive to other parts of the Hawaiian island. If you are staying in Lahaina, the drive to Iao Needle, Haleakala, or Upcountry is perfect!

I’d also suggest buying a baby pool float . A lot of babies don’t like sand, which can make beach time stressful. If your baby is one of those (like mine), they might prefer the pool.

Or, you can carry them to the water at calm beaches to let them float around in the ocean.

For older babies, consider renting a jumparoo. It’s nice to have a safe place to put your baby while you get ready for the day.

Maui with Toddlers

In my experience, Maui with toddlers is very different than with a baby! They are more energetic and have very strong opinions on everything!

WHERE TO STAY ON MAUI WITH TODDLERS

My favorite area to stay in Maui with a toddler is Kihei. It’s centrally located while still being on the beach. You won’t have to spend too long in the car to get around.

There are a ton of food options and kid-friendly beaches, and it’s just a family-friendly town.

If your toddler won’t nap in the car, you’ll want to follow the advice above about splurging on a nice room. You will be spending a lot of time there.

If you think your toddler can do car naps, then focus on a place with a nice pool area.

Buy some fun pool floats and plan on spending a lot of time swimming. Check to see what kid-friendly restaurants are nearby.

WHAT TO DO ON MAUI WITH TODDLERS

Stock up on snacks! I usually hit up Costco right by the airport to pick up pouches, crackers, and Hawaiian snacks. I also stop at Long’s to get Hawaiian cookies and Asian snacks.

Find out if your accommodation has sand toys you can use during your trip. If not, they are sold at almost every store, including grocery stores .

Or, bring plastic cups or bottles so your toddler can fill them with water at the beach and then dump them out.

When planning your Maui itinerary for kids, don’t overschedule your family. I like to plan an activity for the morning, check moods in the afternoon, and play it by ear.

Best Maui Resorts for Families

Maui family resorts have become quite the thing lately! We’ve primarily stayed at the Honua Kai in Kaanapali , but we’ve been researching the best Maui hotels for kids for future trips.

One tip: Check Costco for Maui family vacation packages with car rental, hotel, and airfare before you book anything.

Here’s what I came up with for where to stay in Maui with kids:

While there aren’t resorts in Kihei, I really want to include some condo options because it’s the best place to stay in Maui for families on a budget and who want to stay in central Maui.

KAMAOLE SANDS

This is my pick for a condo in Kihei. With one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos, it will easily accommodate your whole family. Plus, it’s right across the street from a kid-friendly beach with a large park area.

They have a swimming pool, a wading pool (for kids), a jacuzzi, and an on-site gym. And the units feature kitchens and washers/dryers.

KIHEI AKAHI

This condo is right across the street from an amazing kid-friendly beach, within walking distance to shops and restaurants, plus it has two swimming pools.

Their units have a kitchen and an in-room washer/dryer, which makes it an ideal place for families with young kids to stay in Maui.

KIHEI KAI NANI

This is another condo option that’s pretty affordable. It’s a little further from the beach but only a 5-minute walk away. With the kitchen, you can save money by cooking or heading outside to BBQ.

While the washer/dryer isn’t in the room, you can do laundry on the premises.

If you think you might not rent a car , Lahaina is a really convenient place to stay if you’d like to go on a boat trip or luau .

They have quite a few Maui family hotels that are perfect for kids of all ages.

MARRIOTT’S MAUI OCEAN CLUB

This is one of the best family resorts in Maui. It has one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas that feature full kitchens and washers/dryers. The guest rooms have kitchenettes.

Kids will love their “super pool” complex with waterfalls, water slides, and a grotto.

Parents will appreciate their bathtubs (for kids who refuse showers.) Plus, they have a nice spa! And STARBUCKS.

BEST WESTERN PIONEER INN

This is one of the most distinct hotels in Lahaina. It’s a historic hotel right in the middle of town! It’s a small hotel with 34 rooms, but they have a pool.

If you don’t rent a car, this is an ideal location for walking to many attractions.

THE MAUIAN HOTEL ON NAPILI BEACH

This hotel has a nostalgic 1950s vibe. It has a pool and a large grassy lawn, and it’s just steps away from Napili Beach.

Families will enjoy the daily complimentary breakfast. All studios feature a fully equipped kitchen.

There’s also weekly entertainment by the pool.

NAPILI SHORES MAUI BY OUTRIGGER

This is a recently renovated condominium. They have two swimming pools. Napili Shores also has blackout curtains, which is nice if you need to put kids to bed while it’s still light out.

They have studios and one-bedroom rooms, which are great for families with little kids. There’s also an on-site restaurant that serves macadamia nut pancakes!

Ka’anapali

In terms of Maui kid-friendly hotels, Ka’anapali probably has the biggest selection of the best Maui hotels for kids.

It’s kind of a trek from the airport, but it’s one of the best places to stay in Maui with family who want to spend a lot of time relaxing.

Wondering what to do in Ka’anapali? Mostly, I eat at yummy restaurants and hang out by the water.

HONUA KAI RESORT & SPA

We’ve stayed here twice with the kids, and the pool area is amazing! They have five pools, including one with a little water slide! The beach is just a few steps away from the pool area.

There’s a coffee stand, a market with ice cream, and Duke’s restaurant (with a kids’ menu) on site.

It’s probably one of the best family-friendly resorts in Maui.

ASTON MAUI KA’ANAPALI VILLAS

Kids will love the adorable complimentary shuttle trolley that can take families to Whaler’s Village, luaus, golf, and other destinations.

There are two pools (including a children’s wading pool, bridges, and water features.) Families can borrow pool noodles and sand toys from the Beach Activities Center.

They also have free coffee available every morning near the lobby.

ASTON KAANAPALI SHORES

They have spacious hotel rooms as well as 1-2 bedroom suites with full kitchens.

The Aston Kaanapali Shores has a full kids program called Camp Kaanapali. Here’s where your kids can learn hula dancing, string a fresh flower lei, learn to play the ukulele and construct their own kite.

They also just debuted their new garden pool, which looks very relaxing. And they have another pool. Both are heated.

HYATT REGENCY MAUI RESORT & SPA

This is a really nice resort in Maui for families. Gorgeous rooms and suites and several on-site restaurants.

Kids ages 5-12 can participate in Camp Hyatt. And younger kids will love watching the penguins feeding and helping feed koi fish!

THE WESTIN MAUI RESORT & SPA

This is another fabulous Maui resort for families. It’s right by Whaler’s Village, which has lots of shops and events.

They have an 87,000-square-foot aquatic playground with five pools, water slides, tropical gardens, waterfalls, plus a cave with a hidden jacuzzi.

They also have an on-site luau.

Wailea is probably the most luxurious area in which you can stay. It’s pretty pricey but features great amenities for families.

So if it’s within your budget, go for Wailea Beach Resort for the best experience.

FAIRMONT KEA LANI

I am a HUGE fan of the Fairmont brand, and this hotel is on my bucket list. There are simply too many family perks to list, so I’m just including some of my favorites.

The Fairmont Kea Lani launched their Keiki Dining Program (kids under 5 eat FREE) and kid-friendly cuisine at Kea Lani Restaurant, AMA Bar & Grill, and Kō.

While every child receives a gift when they check in, the Fairmont Kea Lani also offers complimentary amenity kits for babies and tots, which include no-tears hair wash, cleansing soap, gentle lotion, bubble bath, toothbrush, and toothpaste.

This resort has two family activity pools connected by a 140-foot water slide. Plus, they have a Kids Club (for kids 5-12), a canoe experience, and a Hawaiian Cultural Program. There are also restaurants and shops on site.

And parents will love Willow Stream Spa!

This is one of the best places for families looking for a bit of luxury to stay in Maui!

THE GRAND WAILEA

This is another kid-friendly resort in Maui. While they have Camp Grande (for kids 5-12), they also have an area just for teens.

They have many cultural programs, ocean activities, and an on-site luau. Kids ages 5 and under can enjoy FREE breakfast.

The pool area is insane! Wailea Canyon includes four jungle pools, five intertwining slides, a whitewater rapids slide, a Tarzan pool with rope swing, a sand beach, six waterfalls, caves, three Jacuzzis, an infant pool, the world’s first water elevator, and a swim-up bar. And they just opened their new Lava Tube Slide in their pool area.

ANDAZ MAUI AT WAILEA RESORT

This looks like an incredible resort with gorgeous views and a restaurant featuring the famous Chef Morimoto.

They also offer fabulous cultural activities, such as coconut leaf weaving, coconut husking, hula lessons, ukulele lessons, and an outrigger canoe experience.

If you’re interested in a luau, they have one on-site that features a farm-to-table menu and an eco-friendly spa.

It’s also a pet-friendly hotel if you’re considering bringing one with you.

RESIDENCE INN BY MARRIOTT

This is a more budget-friendly place for families to stay in Maui. It’s the first Residence Inn in Maui, and it’s brand new!

Best Maui Luaus for Families

I highly recommend families experience a luau on their Hawaiian vacation.

My kids have been HUGE luau fans, even as babies. The colorful costumes, dancing, singing, etc. are completely mesmerizing!

It’s one of the best Maui activities for kids!

If you are looking for a kid-friendly luau on Maui, the award-winning Old Lahaina Luau is my top pick. There’s an option where families can sit on mats on the ground. This is perfect for snuggling with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers!

If you are worried your kids won’t eat Hawaiian food, check out Myths of Maui. Their kids’ menu includes chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, hot dogs, and chips.

Things to do on Maui with Kids

There are so many Maui family activities ! We try to do a few new things each trip, and we never run out of ideas. Here are my top activities for Maui family vacations:

SURFING GOAT DAIRY

This is a really fun activity to do in conjunction with Haleakala or as a stop when driving around Upcountry Maui.

The drive is absolutely beautiful, and it’s a completely different part of Maui from the resort areas.

Families have an opportunity to feed the goats or sign up for an Evening Chores & Milking tour.

They sell goat cheese, chocolate truffles, award-winning cheeses, goat milk soap, and more!

Even though my kids aren’t super into animals, they liked meeting the goats! When we were there last, there was a nice sandbox area for kids to play in

TURTLE TOWN ECO ADVENTURE

Instead of boarding a big boat for a Maui snorkeling tour, you get to paddle kayaks! The main goal is to get to Turtle Town to see lots of sea turtles, but you never know what other sea life you might spot!

This 3-hour excursion is geared for kids ages 5 and older and is one of the top Maui kids’ activities. Check the latest rates and availability .

On one of our trips to Maui, we went with extended family who wanted to go on a snorkel cruise. Since I had a toddler with me, I did a lot of research to see which ones we could do.

I found the Four Winds Maui , which was awesome for toddlers! They had floats with windows, so my toddler could lay on the board and “snorkel” without getting his face in the water. He LOVED it! And they had a water slide for the older kids!

This Molokini Snorkel Cruise also looks amazing! Molokini is that little crescent-shaped island off the coast of Maui.

We haven’t done this one yet, but that’s the plan in a few years. They focus on finding sea turtles!

I’m also interested in this snorkeling cruise to Lanai . The boat has a little water slide, so when the kids are done snorkeling, they have another cool activity.

MAUI HORSEBACK RIDE

For kids ages 7 and older, this Maui horseback ride takes you to a waterfall and offers stunning ocean views. The guides are happy to take your photo during this two-hour experience.

Plus, you’ll ride through a petting zoo where you can meet all kinds of interesting animals. Check the latest rates and availability .

MAUI OCEAN CENTER

Probably the top activity in Maui for families is the Maui Ocean Center. Here’s where they have one of those tunnel aquariums where it looks like the fish are swimming all around you!

They also have tidepools, traditional aquariums, and indoor and outdoor exhibit areas.

What’s really cool about the Maui Ocean Center is that they offer many Hawaiian cultural programs throughout the day. We participated in one about hula implements (instruments used while dancing), and it was very interesting!

I’ve been twice with my kids, but it’s not their favorite thing to do. They’d rather see sea life while floating in the water.

MAUI SUNSET DINNER CRUISE

Maui sunsets are truly magical! This makes a great date night with (or without) your kids. It’s a plated dinner followed by dancing if you choose to partake.

Many boat rides don’t allow little kids, but this one does, so I included it in this list.

Depending on when you go, you might even get to see some whales!

MAUI HELICOPTER TOUR

One of the top activities in Hawaii is doing a helicopter tour. It’s a great way to see the islands from a whole new perspective.

With this Maui helicopter tour , you’ll see Molokai and Maui, which is pretty cool! This tour accommodates kids of all ages. Children under 2 are free.

Another option is the Maui Circle-Island Helicopter Tour , which focuses solely on Maui. You’ll get to see Haleakala Crater, Iao Valley, and even Hana! Children under 2 are also free.

I’ve never done a helicopter tour (I’m slowly building the courage), but I get asked about it, which is why I included it on this list.

MAUI ATLANTIS SUBMARINE ADVENTURE

Have you done the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage attraction at Disneyland? This is like the real-life version of that ride!

Your family will spend a couple of hours inside a submarine. During this time, divers will carefully hold sea life to each window.

It’s kind of like snorkeling without getting wet!

We did this when my oldest was two years old, and he was a little scared of the divers.

SURF LESSONS ON MAUI

If you’re looking for a Maui surf lesson for kids (especially ages eight and younger), this private surf lesson looks perfect! The instructors really set kids up for success by doing a lot of the work for them.

Parents can feel good that their child gets one-on-one attention. Plus, if you are traveling with multiple kids, they can surf together while each having their own instructor.

But, if you would like semi-private surf lessons for your family, that’s also an option. They recommend them for kids ages 6-10.

For kids ages six and older who are serious about surfing, this beginner surf lesson is a great place to learn the basics. But, you must also enroll an adult.

FREE HULA SHOWS

As a hula dancer myself, I INSIST you take advantage of some of the free hula shows on Maui!

I suggest picking up a visitor’s brochure like This Week Maui or Maui Gold at the airport. It will list a lot of free hula shows. Here are the ones I found:

• Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
• Kaanapali Beach Hotel
• Lahaina Cannery Mall
• Whalers Village
• Queen Ka’ahumanu Center
• The Outlets of Maui
• Napili Kai Beach Resort

MAUI SUGAR CANE TRAIN

If you are visiting Maui during the holidays (Thanksgiving through New Year), climb aboard The Holiday Express! It’s a Hawaiian version of a Santa train, and it would be super fun for toddlers and preschoolers!

They are trying to raise money to open the train year-round, so please buy a ticket and support them!

Road to Hana

A lot of families ask me, “Should I do the Road to Hana with kids?”

It depends so much on your family. If your kids hate their car seat, don’t like being in a car, are sick or teething, or get motion sickness, DO NOT GO! It will be miserable for everyone!

Otherwise, it’s an emphatic YES! It’s one of the most awe-inspiring things to do on Maui with kids.

I went with my toddler, and we had a great time! We explored the gardens, ate yummy banana bread, and played at the beach. He even fell asleep for the whole drive back!

ROAD TO HANA TIPS FOR FAMILIES

• Check the weather. Avoid rainy days, if possible.
• Start early. You won’t want to feel rushed.
• Make frequent stops. My top Road to Hana stops for kids include The Garden of Eden, Lava Tube, Kahanu Garden, Wai’anapanapa State Park, Hana Town, and Seven Sacred Pools.
• Buy banana bread. They sell it in a few places, but I like the Halfway to Hana Stand for the photo op!
• Don’t forget bathroom breaks. You can find restrooms at many of the previously mentioned stops, plus others like Pua’a Kaa State Wayside Park.
• Pack snacks and drinks. While there are some cute places to stop along the way, you might want to bring food and drinks as a backup.

ROAD TO HANA TOURS

If you aren’t renting a car, look into Road to Hana Tours. This Road to Hana Luxury Tour provides breakfast and lunch. They can accommodate infants, toddlers, and kids of all ages.

Plus, they stop at several points along the way to get out and admire the amazing sites!

This Road to Hana tour is another option. They emphasize frequent restroom stops, which we all know is vital when traveling with kids!

I also found this Maui Hana Coast Day Trip . It looks like they give you enough time to swim, depending on the time and weather.

Taking Kids to Haleakala

I know some families are hesitant to take their kids to Haleakala. It can be a long, windy drive, and the altitude changes.

If your kids are prone to motion sickness, I wouldn’t do this.

However, I took my toddler here, and it was amazing! They have a visitors center where you can learn more about Haleakala. And there are lots of walking trails.

Since it’s so high up, wear a jacket or bring blankets to keep you warm. It can get quite chilly!

This is a state park, so you’ll need to pay for parking if you drive a rental car.

If you don’t rent a car, you’ll probably want to look into Haleakala tours. There’s a Haleakala Sunrise Tour with Breakfast , which accommodates kids of all ages.

Kids ages 12 and older can participate in a Haleakala Downhill Bike Tour , where families get dropped at the summit of the mountain and race down the switchbacks.

While sunrise at Haleakala is the busiest time to visit (mostly for the unbelievable experience!), Haleakala at sunset is also a nice time to go.

This is perfect for families who don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night to drive up to Haleakala in time for sunrise. Plus, you still get an amazing view!

Exploring Iao Needle in Maui

I’m not a fan of hiking, but I LOVE Iao Valley State Park ! It’s not super far from the Kahului Airport, so it makes a great first stop in Maui.

It’s the most kid-friendly hike on Maui. The trail is paved, and my 2-year-old was able to climb all the way to the top without help (including a ton of stairs.)

Advance reservations to enter I’ao Valley State Monument are now available online . The parking fee is $10 per vehicle. The additional non-resident entrance fee is $5 per person, and there is no charge for children under three years old.

My biggest tip is to wear bug spray! The first time I went with my toddler, his little legs got so many bug bites.

Best Maui Beaches for Kids

If you are planning on spending time at the beach with your kids, you probably want to know which Maui beaches are the best for kids.

My top kid-friendly beaches on Maui for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers include:

BABY BEACH IN PAIA

I brought my oldest here when he was nine months old, and it was perfect! The water is super calm, so you can dip your baby’s feet in it without getting splashed.

It does involve a bit of walking to get to the beach from your car, but I think it’s worth it!

BABY BEACH IN LAHAINA

This beach is ideal for families staying in Lahaina and Kaanapali. The sand is soft, and there are barely any waves. It’s awesome for toddlers who want to play in the sand and water.

KAMAOLE BEACHES IN KIHEI

When we stayed in Kihei, I loved that we could walk to these three beaches. They were awesome for toddlers! We built a lot of sand castles here. Plus, you can pick up food nearby and have a picnic.

There is lots of parking, and they have restrooms.

KAPALUA BAY

If you are looking for a picture-perfect beach on Maui, Kapalua Bay is it. The beach is adorable, and the water is (usually) calm enough for kids to play in. It’s convenient if you are staying between Lahaina and Kapalua.

We did a family photoshoot here on our last day in Maui, and I wished we had come earlier on the trip so we could have more time to play!

Maui with Kids FAQs

Absolutely! Maui is the perfect mix of attractions and activities, plus open spaces to get away from it all. There are tons of kid-friendly Maui resorts and vacation rental homes.

Not really. If you’re island hopping , you’ll want at least five days on Maui. Ideally, you’ll stay for 7-10 days. That way, you can do several activities and day trips and have a few pool/beach days.

School vacations are typically the busiest (and most expensive) time to go to Maui. If you have some flexibility, try going during the off-season. This runs from mid-April to June in the Spring and September to mid-December in the Fall. You’ll find some awesome travel deals, and the weather is nice and mild.

Personally, I'd test out the carrier you want to bring. I've been able to hike a little just using my Tula. The hiking back packs take up a lot more room when traveling. But, if you are planning on doing a lot of hiking (and your hiking back pack is comfortable) definitely take it! Have a great trip!

What a great and detailed guide! Maui is one of our favorite islands to visit---definitely my husband's favorite (for me, it's too hard to choose!). We had a great experience renting a condo in Kapalua--loved having our own space, plenty of room, and a pool to use nearby, but they can be pricey. Another kid friendly beach is Napili Bay--you have to go through the resort a little to get there, but of course it's free for everyone to use.

My family has been vacationing on Maui for years. We’ve done it with babies, toddlers , preschoolers, and elementary aged kids.

Because people know that we love going to Maui with kids, they often send me their proposed Maui itinerary to see if they are missing anything.

Most of the time, I find that people are trying to cram WAY too many things into each day.

We all know how unpredictable kids can be. Add in jet lag and a tight schedule and you have a recipe for a very stressful family vacation.

You don’t want to spend thousands of dollars and not have an epic Hawaiian vacation.

In this post, I break down exactly how to spend 5 days in Maui with kids without overdoing it .

5 Day Maui Itinerary FAQs

If you are heading to another island, 5 days is a good amount of time to spend on Maui. The best Hawaii vacation is usually 7-10 days (or longer, if you can swing it!)

Usually, it’s best to visit Maui during shoulder season ( mid-April to June in the Spring or September to mid- December in the Fall.) This is when the weather is pretty mild and you can get great Maui vacation deals.

Honestly, it’s one of my favorite things to do in Maui! There are lots of kid-friendly stops along the way and plenty of places to get fresh fruit, banana, bread, shave ice, and more. The views are stunning!

5 Days in Maui Itinerary

Arrival day:.

Flights from the Mainland typically arrive on Maui in the early afternoon. So, you’ll probably have a few hours to get settled in your hotel.

Pick up Your Rental Car

Wondering if you need to rent a car in Maui ? The answer is YES.

For this 5 day Maui itinerary, you’ll be exploring parts of Maui that aren’t easy to get to with public transportation. And Uber on Maui isn’t super reliable.

So, you’ll want to reserve your rental car before your trip so you can pick it up as soon as you land.

We all like to save money while we travel, right? Well, we’ve found that we can usually save a lot of money by booking through Discount Hawaii Car Rentals .

Basically, they get screaming deals on rental cars from top companies like Alamo , Dollar Car Rental , Avis , Thrifty , Enterprise , Budget , and Payless . Check out the latest prices and more details.

And, you’ll want to bring your own car seats or booster seats to ensure they are the right fit for your child.

Grab Essential Groceries

After you have your rental car, take a few moments to pick up food, snacks, and drinks while you are in Kahului .

Just a few minutes from the airport, you’ll find Costco, Walmart, Target, and several grocery stores.

We usually get breakfast items, milk, Hawaiian juice, snack items that don’t melt, and a few treats.

If you are planning on cooking meals during your trip or making sandwiches, this is a great time to get all that stuff. You won’t want to waste vacation time going grocery shopping later in your trip.

Insider tip: If you’re getting lots of cold items, invest in a small soft-sided cooler to keep your groceries fresh in the air. It will also come in handy to keep food cold in the car throughout your trip.

And this is also a good time to buy any inflatable pool toys or sand toys you might want.

Check into Your Hotel

Now it’s time to head to your hotel or vacation rental. It might take some time to unload kids and suitcases, find your room, park the car, etc.

While it might be tempting to try to book a tour or plan an excursion during this time, I don’t recommend it.

Your flight might be delayed, there might be a long line at the car rental, you might hit traffic, etc. The last thing you want is the extra stress of falling behind on your itinerary.

Instead, think of any free time you have as “bonus time.” We usually like to use our bonus time to play in the pool, sit out on the lanai, or walk to a nearby beach.

Early Dinner

Because of the time change (Hawaii is 2-3 hours behind the West Coast), your family will probably feel a bit sleepy as it gets close to dinner time.

So, I suggest having an early dinner somewhere close to your hotel.

And, don’t stay out too late because you have an early day tomorrow!

Maui Itinerary Day 1: Haleakala National Park + Upcountry Maui

Sunrise at haleakala.

If you are flying from the Mainland, you will be waking up early due to the time difference. Might as well take advantage of it.

One of the best things to do on Maui is experience the sunrise at Haleakala National Park. People equate it to a religious experience.

If you’re staying in West Maui, you’ll need to leave your hotel by about 3:30 a.m. in order to get to Haleakala before sunrise. Eat breakfast in your room or bring food with you.

It’s going to be super chilly up at Haleakala Crater, so be sure to wear warm clothes (or grab a few blankets from your hotel.)

You can definitely drive up on your own. There’s even a cool audio tour you can download to hear stories and legends about Haleakala. Find the best prices here.

The nice thing about driving up on your own is that you can take your time exploring the visitor’s center and go hiking in the park.

But some families prefer taking a guided tour . Here are some top options:

RECOMMENDED HALEAKALA TOURS

Haleakala Sunrise Guided Bike Tour : Geared for ages 12 and older, this tour will pick your family up from your hotel and take you to the top of Haleakala. Then, you’ll bike down the mountain after sunrise. Check out the latest prices and more details.

Self-guided Haleakala Bike Tour : This one is also geared for ages 12 and older. You’ll park at Haiku and they will drop you off at the top of Haleakala, where you can take your time riding down the mountain. Check out the latest prices and more details.

If you can’t get there in time for sunrise:

If waking up this early just isn’t in the cards for your family, don’t worry. I’d still suggest you visit at some point in the morning because it truly is remarkable, even after sunrise.

Surfing Goat Dairy (optional)

If you have young kids who like farm animals, there’s the Surfing Goat Dairy that is at the base of Haleakala.

They have some farm tours where you can play with the goats and sample goat cheese.

They are usually open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-4pm, so the timing might work out depending on how long you spend at Haleakala National Park.

Kula Botanical Garden (optional)

Another Maui activity that is located near Haleakala is the Kula Botanical Garden . It’s a really pretty spot and they have easy walking trails that kids can handle.

They even have some animals on site (like chameleons and birds) that kids might get a kick out of seeing.

They are usually open 9am-4pm, so the timing should work to visit right after Haleakala.

Lunch at Ulupalakua Ranch

While you are driving around Upcountry Maui, a great lunch spot is Ulupalakua Ranch .

They have a general store filled with all kinds of cool merchandise, but they also have a grill where they can make burgers to order.

There’s a nice outdoor area to eat and get a first-hand feel for Hawaiian cowboy (paniolo) life.

Plus, there’s a winery across the street with wine tasting available. The grounds are perfect for kids to run around and explore.

Swimming at Your Resort

At this point in the day, your family is probably a bit tired of driving around and exploring, so it’s a good idea to head back to your hotel.

Grab your swimsuits and hit up the hotel pool for a while.

It’s also a great time for younger kids to nap (if they didn’t fall asleep in the car) and for parents to get some rest.

Dinner Options

After you’ve gotten cleaned up from playing at the pool, it’s time to start thinking about dinner.

These are a few kid-friendly places to eat on Maui that are always a hit.

• Hula Grill : This Kaanapali restaurant offers a mix of American food with an island twist. There’s a full kids menu and you’ll want to save room for their famous Hula Pie.
• Cheeseburger in Paradise : Their flagship location is in Lahaina on Front Street. They have a kids menu and it’s an awesome spot to watch the sunset on Maui.
• Monkeypod Kitchen : With locations in both Wailea and Kaanapali, this is a top kid-friendly Maui restaurant. They use local ingredients and have a good kids menu. Plus, they make the BEST Mai Tai!

Maui Itinerary Day 2: Lahaina

Breakfast at leisure.

After such an early morning yesterday, treat yourself to a lazy morning today. You can either eat an easy breakfast in your hotel, or go out for a Hawaiian breakfast.

MAUI BREAKFAST RECOMMENDATIONS

• Kihei Caffe : This is a great option if you’re staying in Kihei or Wailea. They have an awesome breakfast menu including whale-shaped pancakes for kids!
• Slappy Cakes : You can make your own Hawaiian pancakes at your table, which is pretty fun! They also have items like Loco Moco and Eggs Benedict.
• Island Vintage Coffee : This is where you can grab a fresh acai bowl, breakfast sandwich, or bagel. Plus, they make outstanding coffee!

Walk Around Front Street

Front Street is the main drag in Lahaina. This is where you’ll find lots of shops, restaurants, and attractions.

Banyan Park is a great spot to stop as you walk around. It features one of the world’s most massive banyan trees and kids will love checking it out.

There’s the Lahaina Historic Trail with stops like an old prison you can tour.

There are plenty of other things to do in Lahaina , and most of them are right off of Front Street.

Atlantis Submarine Tour (optional)

One of the best things to do in Maui with kids is go underwater with the Atlantis Submarine Tour .

Here, you’ll get to climb into a submarine that will take you underwater to see all kinds of Hawaiian marine life.

There are tons of windows to sit in front of and divers will bring items right up to the windows so kids can get a great look at all kinds of things they normally wouldn’t see.

Lunch Options

• Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop : This is a tasty Lahaina lunch spot with items like sandwiches, burgers, and salads. Save room for their famous pie!
• Paia Fish Market : This is a great spot to get fresh Hawaiian fish or a burger. They have a kids menu.
• Down the Hatch : Another great place for fresh fish. Kids get a free mini shave ice with their kids meal. They also have boozy shave ice for adults.

Sweet Treat

Lahaina has lots of options for an afternoon treat, but my top two picks are: shave ice or Dole Whip .

The best shave ice in Lahaina is Ululani’s Shave Ice . They use fresh fruit syrups and it’s pretty incredible. We actually stop here (or their Kihei location) every day when we visit Maui.

Another option is to get Dole Whip at Lahaina Dole Whip on Front Street. It tastes just like what you get at Disneyland, but they also offer ones with fun toppings like Fruity Pebbles!

After your bellies are full, it’s time to hit the beach! You can either bring your swimsuits with you or head back to your hotel to get all changed.

KID-FRIENDLY LAHAINA BEACHES

• Baby Beach: This is an awesome West Maui beach for little kids. The sand is super soft and the water is super shallow.
• Launiupoko Beach: This beach also has shallow water and some cool tide pools for kids to check out.
• Kahekili Beach Park: This is a great option for families wanting bathroom facilities and good snorkeling for kids.

After you have a chance to get cleaned up, it’s time to head out for dinner.

• Duke’s Beach House : This is the same restaurant group as Hula Grill, so you’ll find some similar items as well as their great kids menu and Hula Pie.
• Sale Pepe: If your family is craving pizza, this is one of the best Lahaina pizza spots. They also have tasty pasta dishes.
• Lahaina Fish Co : This place has awesome views and a mix of fish items and Hawaiian local food. Plus an awesome kids menu.

After Dinner

Depending on moods, you can go for a family walk along the beach or through town. Or head back to your hotel and put the kids to bed and enjoy a cocktail on your lanai.

Maui Itinerary Day 3: Road to Hana

Another top thing to do on Maui is to drive the famous Road to Hana. This Maui activity is all about the journey and less about the destination.

Some families wonder if the Road to Hana is kid-friendly. I’ve done it with kids and it’s been a good experience. But, if your kids tend to get car sick, you’ll probably want to skip this.

The Road to Hana is usually a full-day adventure. You can make it a shorter adventure by turning around at the Halfway to Hana stand. You’ll still get to do a lot of fun stops, but you obviously won’t make it to Hana.

Depending on whether or not you bring your own food, this is one of the best cheap things to do on Maui .

You can eat in your hotel, have a sit-down breakfast, or grab something along the way.

The Road to Hana starts in Paia , so you can always stop to eat there. Or pick up something from a Maui bakery to eat in the car.

Road to Hana Stops

Like I said, the whole point of driving the Road to Hana is to experience the things along the way.

You’ll definitely want to research which Road to Hana stops are worth it for your family because you won’t have time to do them all.

I’ll list some of my favorite kid-friendly Road to Hana stops, but you might consider downloading the Road to Hana audio tour so you can decide as you drive. Check out the latest prices and more details.

• Huelo Lookout : This is a great place to get fresh fruit smoothies to enjoy during the car ride. They also have local Hawaiian fruit you can get.
• Waikamoi Nature Trail : There’s a short hike (under a mile) that’s kid-friendly and has some pretty scenic view points.
• Garden of Eden : This is a beautiful botanical garden on Maui that a great spot for kids to get out and explore. It’s cute for taking photos and seeing little waterfalls and stunning ocean views.
• Halfway to Hana Stand : You’ll want to stop here to at least take a photo with the iconic sign. Plus, you can pick up lunch items and a loaf of their banana bread.
• Lava Tube : If your kids keep asking about seeing lava or volcanoes, you might appease them a little by stopping at this hidden lava tube. It will only take a few minutes to explore and then it’s just bragging rights.
• Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach : The main draw of Waianapanapa State Park is the black sand. It’s unique and definitely worth a stop to check out.

• Small Group Road to Hana Luxury Tour: This is a great option for families who don’t want the stress of driving but also want some control over where to stop. Find the best prices here.

Maui Itinerary Day 4: Molokini Crater (or Kihei)

If your kids are old enough to go snorkeling (or you’re willing to swap parenting duties mid-tour) it’s definitely worth heading to Molokini Crater.

Otherwise, I’ve got a good backup plan in the same general area.

Snorkeling at Molokini Crater

In order to get to Molokini Crater, you will need to join a boat tour (I’ve listed some below.)

These tours usually leave from Maalaea Harbor, which is really close to Kihei. So, it’s really convenient to get to from most resorts.

There are half-day and full-day snorkeling tours to choose from. Some hit up Turtle Town and others have the option to do whale watching (in winter.)

If not everyone in your family is interested or able to snorkel, it can still be a lot of fun. I usually just hang out on deck and enjoy a quiet boat while everyone else is in the water. It’s lovely!

BEST MOLOKINI CRATER SNORKELING TOURS

• Morning Snorkeling at Molokini Crater : This 5 hour tour is on a new boat with a fun waterslide. Plus, there’s an option to see whales in winter. You’ll get breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. Find the best prices here.
• Molokini Crater Zodiac Boat Tour: Kids ages 5 and older can join this 4 hour boat ride. You’ll get food, drinks, and a “float snorkel.” C h eck out the latest prices and more details.
• 2 Hour Molokini Crater Tour : If you’re short on time and have kids at least 8 years old, this is a great half-day option. It doesn’t include food, but you’ll get lots of snorkeling time. Find the best prices here.

Alternative Idea: Explore Kihei

If you aren’t interested in going to Molokini Crater (or you just want to send one parent there) there are lots of things to do in Kihei .

MAUI OCEAN CENTER

If you’re heading to Maui with toddlers or preschoolers, your kids will probably love the Maui Ocean Center.

There are aquariums, hands-on exhibits, cultural programs, and a tunnel through a fish tank.

You can easily see the entire place in about 2 hours, so it makes a great morning adventure. And there’s a restaurant on-site or you can grab lunch elsewhere. Find the best prices here.

ULULANI’S SHAVE ICE

There’s a Kihei location for this popular Maui shave ice spot. It’s great for hitting up on the way to the beach.

KAMAOLE BEACHES

Kihei has a set of 3 Kamaole Beaches that are super popular with families. Spend the rest of your day hanging out at the beach with your kids.

Dinner at Coconut’s Fish Cafe

No matter what you do during the day, you’re going to be hungry come dinner time.

One of the best places to eat in Kihei is hands down Coconut’s Fish Cafe . While they have a pretty extensive menu, they are most famous for their fish tacos.

You won’t be able to stop eating these 17-ingredient tacos topped with house-made mango salsa. They are seriously mouthwatering and I often dream about them.

Maui Itinerary Day 5: Photos, Shopping + Luau

For your last full day in Maui, your schedule is all about making memories.

There’s a professional photo shoot so you can get nice family photos to use for Christmas cards, hanging on your wall, or to add to a photo book. Check out the latest prices and more details.

You’ll go shopping for souvenirs and items that will bring you joy after you get home.

And you’ll get to experience the best Maui luau with your family.

No matter what you end up doing for breakfast, make sure everyone is well-fed and properly caffeinated. You want to ensure good moods for your photo shoot.

Maui Family Photo Shoot

The best time for a Maui photo shoot is right after sunrise or during golden hour (before sunset.)

Personally, I always prefer morning time with little kids because they are usually in a better mood and they haven’t had a chance to get too dirty.

I like to keep our photo clothes in a separate packing cube so they are all together and stay nice and clean. Coordinating colors look really nice.

Some families might want to order fresh flower leis or those gorgeous Hawaiian flower crowns (called Haku Lei) to make their photos pop.

Sometimes we also bring props like a ukulele or Hawaiian doll for baby and toddler photos.

Go Shopping + Enjoy Lunch

There are tons of places to go shopping on Maui , depending on what you’re looking for.

My family loves heading to the Maui Swap Meet (which happens on Saturday mornings.) It’s a great place to find locally made items and great prices.

Whaler’s Village is another popular place to shop in Maui. They have more than 80 shops and restaurants including Cariloha, Billabong, Lilly Pulitzer, Olukai, and more.

There’s also the fancy Shops at Wailea , which offer 70 shops and restaurants including Honolua Surf Company, Lululemon, Prada, Tommy Bahama, and more.

Attend a Maui Luau

I’ve put the Maui photo shoot and luau on the same day because you’ll probably want to wear the same clothes to both events.

While you can book your luau in Maui on any day, I like to save it for last specifically because we’re less sleepy and the kids are usually able to stay awake for the full show.

But, you’ll want to figure out which Maui luau is best for your family and then check availability. You WILL want to book this before your trip.

I’ve come up with a detailed list of the best kid-friendly Maui luaus that should help.

RECOMMENDED MAUI LUAUS FOR KIDS

• Old Lahaina Luau : This Maui luau has been around for awhile and is always a family favorite. It’s really convenient for people staying in Lahaina or Kaanapali. Find best prices here .
• Maui Nui Luau : This is an oceanfront luau in Kaanapali with a buffet dinner. Find the best prices here.
• Te Au Moana Luau : This is at the Wailea Beach Mariott Resort and it’s a sit-down dinner, so you don’t need to go through a buffet line with kids. Find the best prices here.

Departure Day

Depending on the time of your departure flight (and whether you are going home or island hopping ), you have a few options for what to do today.

If you are going home

If this is the last day of your Hawaiian vacation, you might want to spend today picking up any last-minute souvenirs. This includes any food items you might want to bring home or enjoy on the airplane.

For families with morning flights to the Mainland, you probably are only going to have time to finish packing and head to the airport. Make sure there’s enough time to return your car, go through security, and pass the agricultural inspection.

Don’t worry! You can buy airport-packed Maui Gold pineapples to take home from several gift shops in the airport.

For families with afternoon flights to the Mainland, you’ll probably want to stay relatively clean for your flight home. That means only go to the beach or pool if you can shower at your hotel before checkout.

Otherwise, it’s nice to enjoy a leisurely lunch (preferably with a view) and hit up any shops along the way to the airport.

If you are island hopping

For families with morning flights, you’ll probably want to just focus on getting to the airport in time to return your car and get through security.

We usually pull out swimsuits and put in a carry on bag so we can hit the beach or pool as soon as we land (especially if our room isn’t ready yet.)

For families with afternoon or evening flights, you can probably squeak out a bit more fun on Maui. I’d only suggest doing pool or beach time IF you will have time to take showers before checking out.

Otherwise, you might have time to do a tour, book an activity, or go shopping before heading to the airport.

Where to Stay in Maui with Kids

If you’re planning on staying at a kid-friendly Maui resort , you’ll be primarily looking at Kaanapali or Wailea .

These are my top pick for best hotels in Maui for families:

• Grand Wailea Resort : If you can swing it, the Grand Wailea has one of the best pools in Maui that has waterslides and a lazy river. Plus lots of kids activities and experiences throughout the resort and in their kids club. Check out the latest prices and more details .
• Hyatt Regency Maui : This is another great Maui resort with fantastic pools. While they don’t have a kids club, they do have tons of kids activities throughout the resort. Check out the latest prices and more details .

Just Got Back: Maui Family Travel Itinerary

Maui family travel itinerary on where to stay, things to do and where to eat.

We recently returned from a Spring break trip to Hawaii that first included exploring the Big Island and then taking a short inter-island flight over to Maui to continue our Hawaiian vacation!  

There is so much information available out there online and on social media on where you should go, stay, things to do and where to eat for every destination imaginable, but with this new series, "Just Got Back", I hope to provide a quick and easy way for you to take a glimpse into our travel style and of our trip we just got back from and show what we did as a traveling family of four.

Where to Stay

We have been to Maui many times over the years and for this trip, we decided to stay in Wailea at the Wailea Beach Resort.  Situated between sunny Kihei and the beautiful beaches of Makena, Wailea is the perfect place to stay at on Maui if you're looking for high-end shopping, luxury resorts or just a relaxing day at one of the many beautiful beaches.   

There are a variety of lodging options to choose from on Maui ranging from luxury hotels to timeshares/condominiums and everything in between, but most of the hotels in Wailea tend to skew more  towards the luxury market with hotels here including Four Seasons Maui, Grand Wailea, Andaz Maui, and the Fairmont Kea Lani.  

Personally, I love Kaanapali Beach and we have stayed on that side of the island many times over the years, so for this trip I decided to change it up a bit and stay in Wailea at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort.  

Since we have hotel status (Marriott Bonvoy Titanium), we were able to gain access to extra benefits/amenities that include room upgrades and breakfast.  Also, since we had lots of Marriott Bonvoy points that could help cover the cost of our stay, it helped  narrow down the choices for us and select the Wailea Beach Resort for this trip.  I plan on writing more about this in an upcoming post and how we used a lot of Marriott hotel points to cover a majority of our trips for 2022 and the reasoning behind it.  

Since the Wailea Beach Resort was busy during Spring break and is one of the most popular Marriott Bonvoy Redemption hotels in the United States as well, we weren't able to be upgraded to a room with an Ocean View, but were able to request a room near the Nalu Adventure Pool.  And it turned out the room was on the ground level, which made it easy to walk right out to the pool and slides.

Things to Do

One of main reasons why I decided to stay at the Wailea Beach Resort is because of the great kids pool area (Nalu Adventure Pool), which kept the kids busy almost the entire trip.  It was very hard to get them to want to do anything else, except go down slides, swim all day or lounge around poolside, but  Maui is full of so many natural wonders offering  adventure, waterfalls, and much more, so we couldn't spend all of our time at the pool or beach.  

When we weren't relaxing poolside or at Wailea Beach, these are the places we explored and things we did on this.  It is not an exhaustive list of things we've done on Maui , but we recommend you to consider adding some of these things to do to your itinerary when you visit Maui next.

• Haleakala National Park - Towering over the island of Maui and visible from just about any point, Haleakala Crater is a force of nature in every sense.  At 10,023 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano is the stage for a breathtaking range of landscapes. 

• Iao Valley State Park - Significant historical importance to Hawaii, famous for the 1,200 foot Iao Needle, the towering emerald peaks guard the lush valley floor of Iao Valley State Park.

• More than any Hawaiian island, Maui has 120-miles of accessible beaches with 81 white, black, and gold-sand beaches.
• There are no private beaches in Hawaii. By law, no one has the right to own a beach or keep people off the beach so come enjoy the beaches!
• Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island with the third-largest population, 144,000 people

Maui Geography

Let’s get a lay of the island so you can plan your trip easier!

Maui is the second-largest island in Hawaii and is uniquely shaped. It was formed by two volcanoes, Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains. 

Like all of the Hawaiian islands, there are two sides: a leeward side and a windward side. The leeward side of the island is drier and the windward side is wetter. 

There are five distinct areas on the island: West Maui, South Maui, Central Maui, Upcountry Maui, and East Maui (Hana). 

On West Maui, you’ll find long stretches of beaches, warm weather, numerous snorkeling spots, plenty of resorts and vacation rentals, and jaw-dropping sunsets. West Maui suffered the devastating Lahaina fire in 2023 , which will take years to recover from. The historic town of Lahaina has been destroyed and is not open to visitors .

Other areas of West Maui are open to visitors, including the Ka’anapali resort area, snorkeling spots like Kapalua Bay, and the picturesque Napili Bay. Another popular spot with visitors, South Maui dials up the luxury. Here you’ll find the most luxurious hotels on the island, stunning beaches, and views of Molokini Crater and Kahoolawe.

Popular spots here include the resort community of Wailea, the small town of Kihei, the expansive Makena Beach, and plenty of tour boats leaving for snorkeling at Molokini Crater.

Central Maui

You’ll fly into central Maui when you land at Kahului Airport (OGG), the main commercial airport on the island. But that’s not all you’ll find here. Once you leave the main airport area, you’ll find plenty of small restaurants and shops, dramatic mountain views, and great hiking.

Visit the sacred Iao Valley or hike the Waihee Ridge Trail. Or head up to the north coast to stroll through the town of Paia and eat at the most famous restaurant in Hawaii: Mama’s Fish House ( Is Mama’s Fish House Best for Lunch or Dinner? ).

Upcountry Maui

Bring your sweater and head up the slope of Haleakala to Upcountry Maui. You’ll climb in elevation as you get beautiful views of the ocean below you.

You can visit the small cowboy town of Makawao, visit one of the many farms on the island to sample fresh tropical produce, or continue heading up the mountain to the top and visit Haleakala National Park.

Visit East Maui by taking the famous Road to Hana (decide here if the Road to Hana is worth it for you!). This drive takes you around 620 curves, over 59 bridges, and delivers views of a stunning coastline, lush landscape, and stunning waterfalls.

What’s the Best Time of Year to Visit Maui?

While you may be visiting from a place that has four seasons each year, in Hawaii there are just two: summer (kau) and winter (hooilo):

Luckily, the weather on Maui is warm and pleasant year-round, so there’s truly no bad time to visit. But our favorite months to visit are April/May and September/October, because there are fewer visitors, the weather is great, and it’s a little less expensive to travel in this off-peak season period.

While the winter months get slightly cooler temperatures and there is a little more rain, staying on South or West Maui will increase your chances of sunny days and tank top temperatures. That’s why Maui is such a great place to visit year-round. 

And if you’re curious about ocean temperatures and conditions, we have good news. The ocean temperature is always between 75 to 80 degrees, year-round. That means you can swim comfortably in January and in June.

But aside from temperature, consider waves.

During the summer months, you can usually find calm water around the island. The exception is if there is a storm (or remnants of a storm) passing by or if the island is getting a south swell.

South Maui is known to get swells during the summer months, which can bring in larger waves and choppy conditions. West Maui will generally have calmer ocean conditions in the summer. 

In the winter, north swells can bring choppy water and large waves to the north, west, and east side of the island, while the south usually stays a bit calmer.

Getting to Maui

There are two airports on Maui, though one is used very infrequently. The main airport is Kahului Airport (OGG) . This airport is located in central Maui, approximately 30 minutes from Wailea and 45 minutes from Ka’anapali. Kahului airport serves inter-island, domestic, and international flights.

The second airport, Kapalua Airport, is located in West Maui, just a short distance from Ka’anapali. You’ll primarily find flights to Kapalua Airport from Honolulu on Mokulele Airlines. Island Hopping in Hawaii: How To Do It Right .

Renting a Car and Getting Around the Maui

Should you rent a car in Maui? Most likely, yes. While Maui does have a bus system and has uber and taxis, renting a car makes traveling around on your vacation easier. 

We’ve done the math for you to help you decide if renting a car in Maui is right for you . 

Our favorite tip for anyone visiting Hawaii is to book with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . When we travel inter-island or we have friends in town, we use them 95% of the time. They offer the most competitive rates, they work with national agencies, you don’t have to pre-book, and you can cancel at any time. If you can’t get a car (remember that great rental car shortage of summer 2021?) or you just don’t want to get one, here are 11 tips for getting around Maui without a car . 

For the most part, the roads on Maui are well paved and easy to navigate with any type of car — no 4-wheel drive required! Though if you want to rent a jeep…it really is fun. 

If you don’t want to rent a car but still want to get out and see the sights, a guided tour is a great option. Two of our favorite tours that will pick you up from your hotel and take you around are the Haleakala Guided Sunrise Tour and the Road to Hana Guided Tour .

Where to Stay on Maui

Ready to book your stay on Maui? Maui has plenty of five-star resorts, outstanding vacation rentals, and a range of options in between. But what is right for you?

Should you stay in a hotel or vacation rental in Maui?

Go for a hotel if you’re looking for the traditional resort experience with big pools, nearby beaches, and restaurants within walking distance. Opt for a vacation rental if you want access to a kitchen, are looking for space, or are looking to save money. 

We routinely stay in both. We’ll book a vacation rental for the majority of our stay so we have access to a kitchen and a little more space for the kids. Then we’ll treat ourselves to a great resort for a few days to enjoy the pool and other amenities. This has been a winning combo for us recently.

Should you stay in Ka’anapali, Wailea, Kihei, or…?

While there are five main areas on Maui, most visitors stay on either West Maui or South Maui to maximize their odds of sunshine, warm weather, and lack of rain. 

Whether you should stay in West Maui (Ka’anapali, Lahaina, Napili, Kapalua) or South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena) is often a heated debate. We try to help you make the right decision for you with these two articles:

How Many Days Should You Stay on Maui

According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, in January 2022, the average length of stay for a visitor to Maui was nearly 10 days! While you might not be able to get away for that long, we recommend starting with at least a week on the island. There is so much to see and that gives you time to balance relaxation with adventure.

Beaches and Snorkeling Spots on Maui

If you’re coming to Maui to snorkel, you’re in luck! In our opinion, Maui is the best island for snorkeling. Add in the stunning beaches, and you are in for a treat. Our favorite beaches include:

• Kapalua Bay : There’s a reason this beach was named the best beach by Dr. Beach in 2018. A beautiful crescent-shaped beach that is partially protected from larger waves for most of the year, this is the perfect spot to spend the day. It’s also a fantastic snorkeling spot. • Kahekili (Airport) Beach Park : This Ka’anapali Beach is a gem. It’s usually less crowded than the beaches in Ka’anapali, it has a large, free parking lot. And there’s a nice reef for snorkeling. Plan your visit with our Airport Beach on Maui: The Full Guide .
• Wailea Beach : There’s a reason some of the biggest resorts on Maui are located on this beach. It’s large, beautiful, and has water that is generally easily swimmable. It’s a beautiful place to spend the entire day.

Remember that while the beaches in Hawaii are beautiful, they are not without risk. Currents, dangerous shore break, and changing ocean conditions make swimming in any ocean dangerous. Practice beach safety by swimming on beaches with lifeguards, obeying lifeguard flags, and when in doubt, don’t go out. This website has more excellent information to help keep you safe.

There is no shortage of fun to be had on Maui. From whale watching to snorkeling to hiking, there is enough here to keep you busy and exploring for years.

To promote service and offer support, Rotary president makes historic visit to Maui

LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - For the first time in the Rotary Club’s 110-year history, the service group’s international president made an official trip to Maui this week.

“I’m delighted to be here … and delighted to be seeing some of the projects that Rotary is involved with here on the island,” said R. Gordon McInally.

McInally, who is from Scotland, visited Lahaina to see firsthand what fire evacuees are still facing more than eight months after the disaster.

“We’re here to help people and we’re here to try and make the world a better place. We are focused on peace, and I think in 2024, this world needs peace more than it’s ever needed before,” he said.

There are more than 1.4 million Rotarians in over 200 countries around the world.

They have donated more than $3 million to help with Maui’s recovery.

Of that, about $700,000 has already been spent on dozens of projects like Pu’uhonua o Nēnē, a temporary shelter for fire survivors who were homeless before the disaster.

“The first visit I had was with the doctor, and as a dentist myself … we’ve already had a conversation about how we may be able to help the dental health of some of the residents here,” McInally said.

McInally also visited the Lahaina Memorial to honor the 101 lives lost in the fire.

There they found a fellow Scot, Alfie Rawlins.

He also met with the memorial’s caretaker Soakai Taufa.

“I’m just a normal guy. I just want to help my community here,” said Taufa. “All these people here didn’t ever have a chance to say goodbye to us and I know they had big dreams, and this is not the way they want to exit the thing called life on earth … I’m doing all this for them.”

The Rotary Club plans to use the remaining $2 million for long-term projects such as rebuilding and a memorial park.

“We’re here to improve people’s health. We’re here to improve people’s educational standards. We’re here for people, and it’s all about doing good and caring for people. I believe that everybody has the spirit of caring in our hearts, and Rotary is a wonderful way to deliver that care for people,” said McInally.

McInally visited the teachers and staff at King Kamehameha III Elementary School and presented them with a check.

He also visited Lahainaluna High School and gave them a check too.

He said his biggest reason for his visit was to say thank you.

“I want to tell the people that we are with you. Rotary is a community that exists in 200 countries of the world, but we are one community, and we are behind the people of Maui.”
