Complete Hilo helicopter tours guide

Paradise Helicopters Bell 407 passing Hawaii's Kohala Coast Waterfalls

Believe me when I say the small town of Hilo on the Big Island's east coast is sure to line up a helicopter tour that is within budget, with an experience that will be of interest.

Hilo helicopter tour departures are served by three tour operators, along with nine tour package deals via Hilo International Airport. Guests can book up a tour that includes volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforest and the coastline. Make it an experience to remember by booking a doors off flight or landing adventure .

Hilo helicopter tour price list

Nine helicopter tour options, blue hawaiian vs. paradise vs. safari, hilo airport departures, hilo volcano helicopter tours, doors-off or landing excursion, half-day family adventure.

Booking up a helicopter tour on the Big Island with a Hilo departure offers up all that you would expect from an island jam-packed with activities.

No area of interest will go unturned, as all major attractions on the island will be seen in the air or on a landing adventure.

Of the nine helicopter tours from Hilo Airport, three of them exclude a volcano but that's only because they're cheap Big Island helicopter tours , so focus more on the Hilo area.

Reliable yet well known Hawaii helicopter tour companies are located in Hilo; of whom offer cheap to middle range tour prices, per person.

Remember to compare price to flight duration to book a tour that offers the most value

It can't be said enough, please do book a Hawaii open door helicopter tour, or where available book a doors off upgrade.

Removing the doors while exploring the Island of Hawaii's volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforest and coastline guarantees optimum views when there's no doors in the way.

What else you can do is refine your booking more by ordering a air and landing tour that can include a coffee theme tour, a swim, a bite to eat or trekking up the Kilauea Volcano.

Only the three Big Island helicopter tour companies who serve helicopter tours on the Island of Hawaii, of whom offer nine package deals between them.

What is fantastic about these offers is they cater to the lonely traveler or a group of people or a whole family.

You'd want to think about the cheapest Big Island helicopter tour at just $99.00, but after that the prices increase dramatically, but still within budget.

Thing to notice is price range to flight duration, as cheap as the $99.00 price tag is; its only a 15 minute air only tour.

Most landmarks or attractions on the island are the theme of each tour, but a volcano, rainforest, coastline, plus waterfalls I said to feature on every flight.

Be sure to pay attention to Paradise Helicopters' tours who include a doors off upgrade.

To embark on a air or land adventure with use of a helicopter tour via Hilo; a decision as to be made which operator to sign up with, so let's see what the companies have to offer.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

Blue Hawaii Helicopters are what I would call Hawaii's go-to helicopter tour company, so much so they are suited to visitors bringing children along.

What makes the company so reliable for so many customers booking up with this firm annually is their use of a 6-seater Airbus EC130.

It will fit four passengers along the rear row whereas two guests can sit in the front.

The operator make sure they cater to as many people as possible by making it affordable, to do that they've made available a very cheap tour options, with two middle range pricing, with only the one on the higher end.

Blue Hawaiian have very little limitation in terms of weight or age restrictions, so you will be in safe hands when booking with this operator.

Paradise Helicopters

If you're traveling as a large group or family, again I would think about booking up with this operator over anyone else for two simple reasons:

One of their helicopter tours that depart Hilo is a doors off experience in a Hughes 500 .

Whereas two of their other tours are not doors off initially, but guests can pay extra for a doors off add-on, which I highly recommend.

I do expect all four tours they've made available out of Hilo International Airport to be in the Hughes 500 - or MD500 - chopper that sits up to four passengers.

No guarantee but what other helicopter type could be laid on is their 6-seater passenger capacity Bell 407 - its has a front and back facing seat configuration.

Safari Helicopters

What is the operators only helicopter tour out of their Hilo headquarters is their Big Island Volcanoes National Park & Waterfalls Safari.

No doors off tour or landing excursion with Safari but the company do offer one unique experience.

That is their Airbus H125 helicopter has what is known as a floor to ceiling window configuration, it basically means the windows allow for amazing, unrestricted viewing.

Seating arrangement is similar to Blue Hawaiian Helicopters in that the H125 allows all forward facing passengers on the rear row, plus two co-pilot seat occupants.

Safari Helicopters have priced their only tour on the middle range, along with a 55 minute air only tour duration.

Paradise Helicopters Bell 407 sitting on Hilo Heliport

All three Island of Hawaii helicopter tour companies will depart out of the less busy Hilo International Airport.

Its located in the heart of the town which is easy to get too on foot or by transportation.

Paradise Helicopters and Blue Hawaiian Helicopters will require guests to enter the terminal that has 'tour sign age' above the entrance.

Entering the building guests will be required to check-in a head of time, and don't forget your photo I.D.

Guests who have booked up with Safari Helicopters can find their offices a little easier as you approach the terminal, the standalone building sits on the entrance to Airport Rd.

Once you're due to begin your tour, all guests will be led out onto the heliport area of the airport where the choppers sit on the tarmac.

What with being located on the Big Island, you can probably guest its fascinating chain of volcanoes is the focus of most tours.

In fact you'd be hard pressed to miss the peak or steaming pocket of a volcano whilst cruising at 1,000 ft. in the air over Hawaii.

Of the nine Hilo helicopter tours, only three of them exclude a volcano centric flight route.

So what you can expect to see is the summit of the Kilauea Volcano along with lava flows that are not to be missed.

The best Big Island volcano helicopter tours are those that include a landing adventure, and that's precisely what you can experience.

But if its in the air only, its still an amazing adventure to be had for the whole family, and a safe one too.

OK, so you cannot book up a Hawaii open door helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian or Safari Helicopters, so its over to Paradise Helicopters.

By default, Paradise only offer the one helicopter tour that is a doors off experience.

While two options allow for you to book a doors off tour as an upgrade option. But did you know you can experience doors off if someone else on your flight orders this add-on.

Participating in a doors off helicopter tour is one of my favorite things to do, so I cannot recommend it enough.

What else you can get out of what would usually be an 'air only flight' is one that includes a landing - its a good one too as its a guided volcano ground excursion.

Blue Hawaiian also offer their coffee theme tour which is fantastic for the whole family as its include a lunch and chocolates.

If you're bringing the kids along for a helicopter tour on the Big Island via Hilo; then be sure to book a family adventure.

Air only flights are a must but you won't be disappointed if that's all you can afford.

However, a family adventure for half of the day is one to experience if the budget allows it, but you want more than an air only helicopter tour.

It must be said its not quite half a day, but if I include the hotel to airport transfer time and vie versa, it can be as much as ten to twelve hours will need to be set aside.

What will be involved is a less than 30 minute air tour; along with a guided tour through the rough terrain of the Volcano National Park, handed over to specialist tour guides.

Its the nine Big Island helicopter tours if departing Hilo International Airport, of whom only three helicopter tour companies are based their.

Budget is important so know there's a basic yet short flight duration tour from $99.00.

Whereas Hilo helicopter tour departure prices average between $250.00 to $350.00, so are middle range pricing.

Blue Hawaiian, Paradise or Safari Helicopters operate directly out of the Hilo Airport terminal, where guests must arrive in time to be checked-in.

Not so with Safari as the company have their own building isolated but easier to spot as you arrive on the airport grounds.

What is the Big Island known for most, Volcanoes; so expect all but a few helicopter tours to feature the Volcano National Park including amazing lava flows.

Where the option is available I only ask you to upgrade to a doors off experience via Paradise Helicopters, or make it a landing adventure with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters.

Hawaii Helicopter Tour FAQs:

Which hawaiian island is best for helicopter tours.

While all of the islands offer spectacular sights from the air, Kauai has the most dramatic helicopter views. Because so much of the island is inaccessible by car, you’ll get to see close up some beautiful spots you’d have difficulty seeing otherwise, like parts of Waimea Canyon, the Napali Coast, and Wai’ale’ale Crater.

But if you can’t make it to Kauai, all of the islands offer something a little different in terms of tours, which we cover in our island-by-island review of the best helicopter tours.

How Much Does a Helicopter Tour Cost in Hawaii?

A helicopter tour starts at $245 for a 45-minute tour. Most tours average $400. This is easily the most expensive tour option in Hawai’i. Unlike a luau, I’ve been hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t enjoy the experience for the price point.

On some tours, you can pay extra ($100+) for a front-row seat or be relegated to the back or middle where they typically pack in passengers four to a seat.

Is a Hawaii Helicopter Tour Worth It?

While this is an expensive activity, it’s one people enthusiastically recommend.

best hawaii helicopter tours Maui

Our newsletter subscriber Anthony H. raved about his experience on a tour with Air Maui .

“Overall, I would highly recommend a helicopter tour at least once to see Maui from above and get to go into some of the valleys that can only be seen from a helicopter.  The valleys were so verdant and show no sign of human influence or touch, which was just awesome!” “My wife and I both felt it was well worth the cost and would love to do it again but even on a longer flight… so time to save our pennies.  Haha!” Anthony H.

Hawaii helicopter companies often offer unique experiences to make it even more memorable: fly with the doors off, land in remote locations, or hire a private charter for a wedding proposal.

The allure of a helicopter tour (besides feeling like your Magnum PI ), is seeing Moloka’i sea cliffs (the largest in the world), Kauai’s Jurassic Park waterfall and Na Pali Coast, Kilauea erupting, Maui’s rugged West Coast, secluded valleys, and other beautiful and exclusive locales from above.

The Hawaii helicopter tours we recommend below will take you to the spots worth seeing from above.

But that’s not to say it’s all positive from helicopter tour attendees. Hawaii doesn’t have a great track record with helicopter safety (don’t worry, the ones that made our list have excellent safety records). And there are some other common complaints that you should take into consideration before booking.

Common drawbacks of helicopter tours are the following:

  • Poor visibility from their seat (usually back or middle seats)
  • Canceled flights due to weather
  • Canceled flights due to the minimum seating threshold not being met

So whether it’s a worthwhile experience for you comes down to whether you pick a great tour (our list can help with that) and your expectations around cancellations.

Tips for Picking the Best Hawaii Helicopter Tour

Using the criteria below in our research, we selected what we believe are the best helicopter tours on each island. These were our criteria, which you may want to consider when picking the right tour for you.

  • Safety records include no crashes or injuries: we know past performance can’t predict future performance, but some tour operators that we don’t recommend have safety records we don’t feel comfortable with. Do your research to make sure you feel comfortable with the safety track record of the helicopter tour you are booking.
  • Good value for the price: A helicopter tour is expensive, so we looked for ones that had something to add value. Things like having excellent visibility from all seats,  private charter experience, or allowing you to go doors-off.
  • Best tour experience: the flights offered are beautiful parts of the island to explore and the seating is comfortable

The Best Hawaii Helicopter Tours

When we decided to recommend helicopter tours, our first criterion was safety. We researched helicopter company safety records , FAA fines and penalty records, and FAA certification.

Hawaii Volcano Tours

Circle of Fire Helicopter Tour – Hilo

Difficulty rating, minimum age, activity time.

7:30 AM to 3:45 PM

Tour Duration

What's included, description.

Perspective is everything - and the only way to fully appreciate the immensity and power of the Big Island’s volcanoes is from the air. Pele’s Volcanoes Adventure is a fifty minute, fully narrated, helicopter tour that will fly you over Volcanoes National Park - home to both Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.

aerial view from a helicopter tour from hilo

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. You will be flown over Halema’uma’u Crater, which is located within the main caldera at Kilauea’s summit. (Halema’uma’u is also the legendary home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess and creator of these volcanic landscapes.) You will also be flown over Iki Crater, which is located just outside the volcano’s main caldera.

(Witnessing lava flows or steam vents from above these two craters is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but please keep in mind that these sightings can not be guaranteed as conditions in the craters are ever changing).

Mauna Loa is the world’s largest active volcano. It reaches from five miles below the ocean floor to 13,000 feet above sea level at its summit, and it encompasses nearly half of the island of Hawaii. Weather permitting, you’ll be flown over the base of this massive volcano and be shown the remnants of its most recent eruption (November 2022).

While the volcanoes are the main focus of this tour, you’ll also enjoy a bird’s eye view of Hilo and the Puna district. Puna is largely undeveloped due to the volcanic activity in the area and is known for its rugged terrain, lush rainforests, waterfalls, and black sand beaches. This abundance of natural beauty makes for a stunning backdrop, resulting in a scenic flight that is spectacular from start to finish.

You’ll be flying in an Airbus EcoStar or A-Star helicopter, which are state-of-the-art helicopters specifically designed for the tourism industry. When passenger comfort and safety are the priorities, the end result is a smooth ride, cozy seats, and doors and windows that are designed so that everyone aboard gets a good view - and doors are left on for added safety. .

The typical flight path includes a flyover of Volcanoes National Park (including Kilauea’s active crater and Mauna Loa’s recent lava flows), as well as traveling along the easternmost coast of Hawaii. Please keep in mind that your pilot may need to adjust the intended flight plan if conditions necessitate.

15 Best Hawaii Helicopter Tours

Hawaii, the fiftieth and most recently added American state, is many people’s idea of paradise. The Pacific archipelago’s islands all have distinct personalities, yet all of them bring to mind turquoise waters lapping against white sand beaches, giant lava-spewing volcanoes, and a relaxed, laid-back culture that many of us can only dream of.

Hawaii is not a regular holiday destination, and it has an adventurous side too. You should make your trip to the tropical archipelago extra special by considering getting an aerial view of the islands from a helicopter. This is a once in a lifetime experience and is bound to be absolutely unforgettable.

But how on earth do you choose the right one? Well, we’ve put together this list to help you choose the flight for you and tick seeing Hawaii by helicopter off your bucket list.

1. Big Island: Helicopter, Zip-Line & Volcano Tour with Meals

Helicopter, Zip-Line & Volcano Tour

A perfect experience of Big Island for those with an adventurous side, this eight-hour guided tour incorporates helicoptering, ziplining, and a delicious picnic lunch, all in the jaw-dropping Volcanoes National Park.

In the morning, you’ll soar through lush green jungle on the longest zip line in a Hawaii. After that, it’s the highlight of the day; watch the jungle give way to black lava as you soar over the active Kilauea volcano. You’ll also see the rainbow waterfalls, before dinner at a winery.

Watch the sunset within the national park before you are whisked back to your hotel.

2. Maui Dream 65-minute Helicopter Flight

Maui Dream Helicopter Flight

Get yourself to Kahului airport on Maui before taking to the skies for this experience of a lifetime, which will see you ride for just over an hour over the “Valley Isle.” You’ll do a complete circle of Hawaii’s second largest island, taking in its tranquil beauty.

During the 65-minute flight, you’ll see hidden valleys in the West Maui Mountains, the tropical green Hana rainforest landscapes, and the volcanic crater of Haleakala National Park – all of this surrounded by the uninterrupted blue of the Pacific Ocean.

Don’t forget your camera, as you’re sure to get some breath-taking shots.

3. Maui and Molokai Scenic Helicopter Flight

Maui And Molokai Scenic Helicopter Flight

This 55-minute tour takes in not just one, but two of Hawaii’s magnificent islands: Maui and Molokai. Starting at Kahului airport on Maui, your flight will begin by taking you over the world’s largest sea cliffs before seeing some of the most formidable waterfalls on Molokai.

The in-flight commentary will tell you exactly where you are; whether it’s the huge fish ponds or Elephant Rock. In the second half of the flight, when flying over Maui, you’ll get great views of the island’s tallest waterfall and the West Maui mountains. If you’re really lucky, you’ll even see the Wall of Tears waterfall, weather permitting.

4. Maui Spirit Helicopter Flight over Hana And Haleakala

Flight Over Hana And Haleakala

This Maui tour focuses specifically on the eastern part of the island. Feel a rush of excitement as you leave Kahului heliport and head towards Haleakala National Park. Peer down into the crater of the world’s largest dormant volcano before being whisked off over the Hana rainforest.

Other highlights of the trip include Maui’s incomparable coastline, Old Hana Town, and the Manawainui valley.

In winter, those with especially good eyesight may even be able to pick out humpback whales in the blue of the Pacific Ocean.

This dusk tour will take in some of the top attractions from each island, including Molokai’s ancient fish ponds, Lanai’s shipwreck beach – where you can still feast your eyes upon a stranded US World War II ship – and Maui’s Molokini crater.

There’s no chance of you tearing your eyes away when you’re over the water either; you’ll pass over Elephant Rock and the clear waters of the Pailolo Channel.

6. Maui: 75-Minute Hana Rainforest Helicopter Tour

Hana Rainforest Helicopter Tour

This helicopter tour is more than just a flight where you can gawp at the jaw-dropping landscapes before you. The 75-minute Hana Rainforest Helicopter Tour actually lets you land in the Wailua Valley, where you’ll explore what used to be a taro plantation.

A delightful 40-minute round-trip flight will get you acquainted with enormous sea cliffs, roads cutting deep into the rainforest, and even the world-famous Jurassic Rock. Thirty minutes on the ground may not sound like a lot, but it’s enough to find out from your pilot about the remote Hawaiian landscape – home to crops like as coconut and banana.

7. Oahu 60-Minute Helicopter Tour: Doors On or Off

Oahu Helicopter Tour

Take away the stress of getting to and from the heliport by enjoying round-trip transportation from your hotel to the chopper that will give you magnificent views of Oahu.

Volcanic cliffs, coral reefs, and a massive engineering marvel of a lighthouse are just a few of the spectacles you’ll be treated to on this trip.

The tour ends on a sobering note as you pass over Pearl Harbour.

8. Oahu: 30-Minute Night Lights & Fireworks Helicopter Tour

Night Lights & Fireworks Helicopter Tour

Fireworks are great from the ground, but how many people can say they’ve seen them at eye level? Well, anyone who’s been on this tour, for one. Get picked up from your hotel and strap in your phone so you can take incredible photos of fireworks as you’ve never seen them before.

Your flight begins at sunset, where see the last rays reflecting on the pristine waters of the South Shore. As the skies turn black, watch the weekly fireworks show from the Hilton Hawaiian village, coloring the beaches and waters below. Your tour will wrap up when you fly over the USS Arizona Memorial.

9. Oahu: Waikiki 20-Minute Doors On / Doors Off Helicopter Tour

Waikiki Helicopter Tour

You’ll never see Waikiki in the same way again after you fly over it in a chopper. Spot sunbathers and surfers as you soar out of Honolulu harbor, before passing over the pristine white sands of Waikiki Beach.

A friendly and knowledgeable guide will be on hand with live commentary, pointing out other iconic sites such as Diamond Head and Punchbowl Crater.

Your tour winds down by flying over the USS Arizona; your guide is sure to give you more of a background into the poignant events that led up to the destruction of Pearl Harbour.

10. Oahu: 30-Minute Helicopter Tour over Honolulu City Lights

You’ll have jaw-dropping panoramic views of the city skyline, as you see how the lights from the skyscrapers color the sand and sea, giving it an eerie and ethereal glow. You’ll pass over the city harbor, Honolulu Tower, and the Ala Moana center, before seeing the beautifully lit Pearl Harbour and USS Arizona memorial.

11. Oahu: Waikiki Sunset Doors On or Doors Off Tour

Waikiki Sunset Doors On Or Doors Off Helicopter Tour

See Diamond Head and the Waikiki skyline bathed in orange, pink, red, and a host of other colors, before descending via the moving USS Arizona memorial. This short flight is bound to whet your appetite for another helicopter trip.

12. Oahu Circle: Island Helicopter Tour Doors On or Doors Off Tour

Island Helicopter Tour

For those who have spent a lot of time in the city, this is a great opportunity to get to know the more remote parts of Oahu Island. You’ll fly over all of the big-ticket attractions mentioned in other Oahu tours on this page, but this one has a bit of a difference as it’s very nature focused.

Travel up the coast and marvel at the spectacular Manalua Bay, one of the island’s many coral reefs, the Windward Coast, and Lanikai Beach.

Before heading back to Waikiki, you’ll see the full range of the diversity of Oahuan landscapes, as you look down on the Ka’a’awa valley and the Sacred Falls.

After this exhilarating flight, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in comfortable, private transport.

13. Oahu: Path to Pali 30-Minute Doors On or Doors Off Tour

Path To Pali

On this half-hour tour, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken to the island’s South Shore, where your friendly guide will accompany you into your helicopter and take to the skies.

After flying out of the city, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the natural wonder of Diamond Head before heading up one of the world’s most picturesque coastlines, the Windward Coast.

Your tour will then turn inland, giving you a glimpse of the splendid Mount Olomana and the precipitous Nu’uani cliffs.

This tour is a perfect blend of Oahu’s most precious natural and man-made sights.

14. Kauai: 25-Minute Scenic Flight Tour Over Western Kauai

Scenic Flight Tour Over Western Kauai

Maui may be the “Valley Isle,” but smaller Kauai is known as the “Garden Isle,” and this 25-minute tour is a great way to learn how it got that name. Get yourself to Port Allen Airport, where you’ll be met by the guide who’ll provide your in-flight commentary.

Most of Western Kauai’s natural wonders are inaccessible from the ground, making this tour a no-brainer. Fly through the Grand Canyon of the Pacific – Waimea Canyon – as well as seeing the Manawaiopuna falls, which had a starring role in the film Jurassic Park, before heading back to land via the farmlands and mountains of the Hanapepe Valley.

15. Kauai: 55-Minute Flight from Waimea Canyon to Na Pali Coast

Waimea Canyon To Na Pali Coast

This tour, lasting almost an hour, leaves from Port Allen airport and really shows you the best that Kauai has to offer. The island’s most famous landmarks, Waimea Bay and the Na Pali coast, are the focal points of this trip.

Na Pali’s jagged emerald cliffs seem to drop into the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean along the 17-mile stretch. You’ll then head inland to the desert landscapes of the Waimea Canyon. Not only will you see the two top landmarks, but you’ll also see several settings from the Jurassic Park films, as well as Mount Makana and one of the world’s wettest places – Mount Waialeale’s tropical rainforest.

This is the perfect trip if you want to see the best of Kauai from the air.

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).
