with, but too bulky and heavy to carry around if you live out of your suitcase. However, you just can’t pick any brush because it’s small in size. Keep these pointers in mind before making a purchase.

What To Look For When Purchasing A Travel Hair Brush

It’s best to pick a brush that reduces staticity. Staticity in your hair causes frizz, breakage and dryness, and thus should be avoided at all costs. If you are always on the get-go and often have to brush your damp hair, go for brushes that are made specifically for brushing wet hair. Go for one that offers pain-free detangling – they are less likely to cause breakage.

Choose a professional-grade brush with boar bristles if you identify as an “organic girl” and want to use a brush made from natural and high-quality material. A boar bristle brush is amazing but it might be a little expensive. They easily distribute the natural oil from your scalp throughout your hair, making it shine. If you want to go for something more pocket-friendly, opt for a flexible nylon bristle brush or wooden brush. Choose a brush with a non-slip grip if you tend to experience sweaty palms.

  • Preferences

It’s not necessary for your brush to be tiny to be travel-friendly. If you are not comfortable using a very small brush, go for the ones with a foldable design. One good option is a brush that comes with a cover. This protects the bristles from getting damaged in your bag. Wig-friendly brushes are a thing! If you frequently use hair pieces, look for brushes that will be gentle enough to detangle hair without pulling the wig off your head.

Getting a rubber massage cushion with your brush is a good idea if you suffer from frequent headaches or like tight hairstyles with a hair accessory that pulls at the scalp. It’ll act like a massager for your head by stimulating the blood flow. Those that often use heat styling tools should invest in a brush that is anti-slip and light enough to be managed by one hand. A compact, densely bristled brush would be the way to go.

When caring for your hair, it is crucial to practice good hygiene. Dandruff, hair loss, and fungal infections are all caused by a dirty brush. Invest in a brush that can be quickly cleaned and sterilized. Maintain a weekly brush cleaning routine.

The Bottom Line

Travel hair brushes are ergonomically designed with lightweight materials, natural bristles, and non-slip soft touch handles. They are compact enough to fit in most handbags and pockets. These travel-friendly size hair brushes tame frizz, control static, and help in styling your hair anytime, anywhere! Try the  Tangle Teezer  for an innovative design that helps detangle and smoothen hair without causing breakage or damage, and for an eco-friendly, natural, and wooden option, go for the GranNaturals Wooden Bristle Detangler Hairbrush . If you’re looking for something fancy which is foldable and comes with a mirror, choose the Ancable Folding Hair Brush. If you’re looking for something fancy that has a foldable design and comes with a mirror, choose the Ancable Folding Hair Brush. Each brush from the above list offers unique features, so choose one that aligns with your hair care routine and preferences.

Why Is It Important To Store Makeup Brushes Properly When Travelling?

Protecting and properly storing your makeup brushes when travelling is important, as they can get dirty amongst the dust and junk at the bottom of your bag.

Dirty makeup brushes can lead to clogged pores, premature aging and can cause breakouts from different bacteria build up on your brushes.

Try not to throw your brushes in with your makeup, store them separately in a different bag, preferably one with slots so that you can separate your brushes individually so bacteria doesn’t transfer between brushes. Make sure to clean them often to improve its longevity!

Keeping your makeup brushes clean when travelling can be easy once you’ve picked the right products.

If you want to make sure your makeup brushes make it to the other side, it all comes down to maintaining and caring for them as you would your makeup products. BUYER'S GUIDE: TRAVEL HAIR BRUSH

  • *Finding the perfect hair brush for your travels can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it's important to consider several factors before making your decision. Here's a comprehensive buyer's guide to help you navigate the world of travel hair brushes:*

1. Size and Portability

  • Look for a travel hair brush that is compact and lightweight, designed specifically for travel purposes.
  • Consider the brush's dimensions to ensure it fits comfortably in your travel bag or suitcase without taking up too much space.
  • Opt for a brush with a protective case or cover to prevent damage to the bristles during transit.

2. Bristle Type

  • Choose the bristle type that suits your hair texture and needs.
  • Natural bristles are ideal for distributing natural oils and adding shine to your hair. They are suitable for all hair types, especially fine or thin hair.
  • Synthetic bristles are great for detangling and are more resistant to heat. They work well for thick, curly, or coarse hair.
  • Mixed bristle brushes combine the benefits of both natural and synthetic bristles, providing a versatile option.

3. Brush Shape and Design

  • Consider the shape and design of the brush for ease of use and effective styling.
  • Paddle brushes are ideal for smoothing and straightening hair, while round brushes are perfect for adding volume and creating curls.
  • If you have long or thick hair, opt for a brush with a larger surface area to save time and effort.
  • Ergonomic handles provide a comfortable grip, reducing strain on your hand and wrist during styling.

4. Durability and Material

  • Look for a travel hair brush made from high-quality materials to ensure durability and longevity.
  • Brushes made of durable plastic or lightweight aluminum are ideal for travel due to their resilience and resistance to damage.
  • Consider brushes with heat-resistant materials if you frequently use heated styling tools.

5. Multi-functionality

  • Some travel hair brushes come with additional features to enhance their functionality.
  • Look for brushes that offer built-in mirrors or compartments for storing small hair accessories like hairpins or elastics.
  • Dual-action brushes, featuring both boar bristles and detangling capabilities, provide added convenience in one product.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Consider the ease of cleaning and maintenance when choosing a travel hair brush.
  • Look for brushes with removable bristle pads or heads for easy cleaning and removing tangled hair.
  • Opt for brushes that are resistant to product build-up and can be easily wiped clean.

7. Price and Brand

  • Determine your budget before making a purchase, as travel hair brushes are available at various price points.
  • Research different brands and read reviews to ensure you choose a reputable brand known for its quality products.
  • Consider the warranty or guarantee offered by the brand to ensure your investment is protected.

8. Compatibility with Hair Accessories

  • If you frequently use hair accessories such as hairdryers or straighteners, ensure that your chosen travel hair brush is compatible with these tools.
  • Look for brushes that are heat-resistant and can withstand the heat emitted from styling tools to prevent damage.

9. Customer Reviews and Recommendations

  • Before making a final decision, read customer reviews and recommendations to gain insights into the performance, durability, and user experience of different travel hair brushes.
  • Pay attention to reviews from individuals with similar hair types and needs to make an informed choice.

12 Effective Shampoos for Straight Hair that Add Body and Shine

Vacation beauty: the best hair brush for travel.

The ultimate multitasking brush.

Welcome to holiday travel season! We do love a good vacation when we can get them. This means that it’s high time to pack up of our hair care products and tools and figure out which ones will hold up during our travels. When it comes to packing hair supplies you already know your essentials, but often we’re asked, “what is the best hair brush for travel?” You may have multiple brushes you use at home for styling, detangling, and more but it seems like overkill to pack more than one, especially with limited luggage space. In a nutshell? The best hair brush for travel should be able to do it all.

Read on to see what the best hair brush for travel should do:

The Best Hair Brush For Travel: Meet The Paddle Brush

best hair brush for travel paddle

1. The best brush for all hair types

When it boils down to it, the best all-rounder hair brush for all hair types and lengths is the paddle brush . We do like to recommend many different brushes for different hair types , but no one can go wrong with a paddle brush! Right now we’re into the Nexxus Ibiza Cx2 Paddle Hair Brush : Because it is large and has pins that are evenly spaced, this brush type works well for both detangling and styling.

2. Styling with a paddle brush

Because of the size of the brush and its widely spaced pins, a paddle brush is ideal for styling. You can totally use for your at-home blowout  and use it to help you style your hair into sleek looks. Plus, the springy base of the brush makes it super comfortable when brushing near the scalp. Use the paddle brush, and just keep in mind that you need to be gentle. It’s better for the brush, and more importantly, it’s better for your hair.

3. Why size doesn’t always matter for travel

When searching for the best hair brush for travel, many sources will tell you to try and find a more compact or smaller-sized brush, or a brush with a folding handle. We agree that small brushes are needed if you’re going hiking or backpacking, but for your average traveler, fitting in one standard sized hairbrush into your carry on shouldn’t be an issue. We think it’s more important to have a full-sized overachiever of a brush that helps you get the hair you want than to save two inches of space in your suitcase.

4. Which hairbrushes to avoid for travel

When you are traveling, even for a short period of time you need a brush that can do it all. Brushes that are uni-taskers aren’t the smartest for traveling. As much as you may love your teasing brush or your fine-toothed comb for getting precise styles, neither will help detangle your hair or make blow-drying easy and effective. First choose a brush that can help you with your daily hair needs, then see if you have space in your case to toss in another one (or two!) for extra styling help.

Traveling with a bulky and heavy brush may not be the best option if you're always on the go. But choosing a small brush just because of its size isn't the right way to go either.

You can even opt for a foldable travel brush. Our contributor William Slator says, “Foldable travel hair brushes are generally designed for easy maintenance. Most can be cleaned by removing the bristle pad or panel and washing it separately. Refer to the product instructions for specific cleaning recommendations, but in general, they are convenient to clean.”

Refer to our buying guide below and make an informed decision by keeping these key tips in mind before hitting that checkout button.

How to Choose the Best Travel Hair Brush?

Choosing the best travel hair brush may seem like a small decision, but it can have a big impact on your hair's health and appearance. With so many different types and styles of brushes on the market, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here are a few tips to help you select the perfect travel hair brush for your hair type and needs:

1. Consider Your Hair Type:

If you have thick, curly hair, you'll want to look for a brush with strong bristles that can detangle your locks without pulling or breaking them. For fine or thin hair, a brush with softer bristles may be a better choice to avoid damaging your strands.

2. Look for a Compact Design:

Since you're selecting a brush for travel purposes, it's important to choose one that won't take up too much space in your luggage. Consider a brush with a folding or retractable design to save room in your suitcase.

3. Think About Your Styling Goals:

Do you want a brush that can smooth frizz, add volume, or create loose waves? Different brush shapes and bristle types can achieve different styles, so choose a brush that will help you achieve your desired look.

4. Read Reviews:

Before you make a purchase, take some time to read reviews from others who have used the brush you're considering. This can help you determine if it will meet your needs and expectations.

How to Use Travel Hair Brushes

The following are some steps to help you use a hairbrush effectively:

1. Firstly, you need to use a travel-sized brush that suits your specific hair type.

2. Check the brush to see if it's clean, there may be dirt on unwanted residue present sometimes.

3. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to remove any knots and detangle your hair.

4. Then, divide your hair into sections. This will make it much easier to brush.

5. Start brushing from the tips and slowly work your way up to the roots. Remember to use gentle strokes without tugging too much as this can cause breakage.

6. Go through the sections one by one, until your entire head is done.

Once you're done, remove any hair that may have gotten caught in the brush. After that, you can fold it or store it away in its protective cover packaging.

How to Clean a Travel Hair Brush

Here are some ways to ensure that your travel brush remains clean at all times:

1. Examine the brush and check for hair that may be caught in between the bristles. Remove all of it and dispose of it carefully.

2. Take a basin and fill it up with warm and soapy water. Allow the brush to soak for some time.

3. Using an old toothbrush, scrub your brush between the bristles to get rid of dirt and residue.

4. Once done, rinse the brush well under running water.

5. If you want to disinfect your brush, you can soak it in a mixture of white vinegar and water.

6. Shake the brush to get rid of any excess water and wipe the handle with a damp cloth. Pat it with a towel and allow it to dry with the bristles facing downward.

Take a look at the care instructions on the packaging for extra tips and tailored information on how to clean your brush.

NEWVANGA International Universal All in One Travel Adapter

Traveling With a Dual Voltage Hot Air Brush

Typically the best round brush hair dryers for travel should be dual voltage and have two options: 110-120V (US) and 220-240V (Europe). It is ideal for travel because it is safe to use at home or abroad.

When hair tools are designed so to be used in different countries, they’ll be labeled as “dual-voltage”.

A travel adapter enables you to plug your dual-voltage electronics into international outlets. Not all countries use the same type of plug so I recommend you buy an international adapter like this .

Why Be Aware When Using a Dual Voltage Hair Dryer Brush?

Hair tools such as blow dryers, wands, curling irons, and straighteners use up a large amount of electricity so it’s particularly important that they are used with the correct voltage.

For example, in the US we use 110-120V whereas in Europe they use 220-240V. If we plug our electronics into each other’s outlets, they can blow a fuse and stop working. In some cases, they can even fry your hair. The video below can also shed light on adapters, converters, and the right voltage.

Learn about travel adapters, converters, and voltage in this video !

It’s important to understand that an adaptor and converter are NOT the same things. An adapter fits the outlets and a converter changes the electrical current so your electronics down blow a fuse!

Visit this power outlet guide for travelers to see a full list of plugs and outlets by country.

What’s the Best Hair Dryer Brush Dual Voltage?

The brush irons for hair listed in this post are compatible with international voltages to make it easier to take them anywhere in the world.

What’s the Best Blow Dry Brush for Europe?

If you’re from the US and traveling to Europe, Asia, Africa, or the South Pacific including Australia and New Zealand then a dual voltage dryer brush is absolutely essential. If the one you use at home has the dual voltage feature then you can also use it on your travels too.

Remember to switch your hair tools to 220V/240V when you arrive at your destination !

Visit this website for a full list of voltage by country.

I have the Conair Hot Air Curler with dual voltage. I’m in the US and traveling to Greece and Italy soon. After I switch over the voltage setting, can I just use an adapter to plug into the wall or do I need to use a converter? Thanks!

Alex

Hi Jennifer, that’s correct. As long as the hair tool is dual voltage you only need an adapter for it to work. Have a brilliant time on your travels!

Alleen Cater

I want a brush that will work in Japan, where the voltage is 100. The dual voltage brushes I see on the internet appear to assume travel to Europe.

Ruby

I need a dual voltage hairbrush dryer that actually works in Europe. Has anyone used these? Do you need a converter AND adapter?

tricia

i have used the Plavogue dryer brush in Italy, Spain, Sweden, Scotland and Amsterdam with no problems! You just have to plug into the adapter for that country. I have had it for 4+ years, I use it daily(at home) and i can highly recommend it….however, the highest speed/heat just stopped working so there is a shelf life. Still good product for the cost! If it was $200+ I would have expected it to work forever:)

Eleanor Wiggins

I am looking for a dual voltage rotating hair brush to take to Barbados. Can anyone help. Searched and searched ? thank you Eleanor

These are the perfect travel hairbrushes to take on summer vacation.

It’s travel season! Don’t forget to pack all your favorite beauty accessories. Travel hairbrushes and cute little containers of your favorite products make packing easy.

The best time of year isn’t the holiday season but, in fact, vacation time. Vacations can be adventurous, explorative, and relaxing.

Do you know what isn’t relaxing? Packing for vacation. Packing your luggage can leave you feeling stressed and frazzled.  You often feel like you either forgot something or don’t have the perfect items.

Breathe easy, my friend. We are counting down the best travel hairbrushes for all hair types you need to pack this vacation season.

The Perfect Travel Hairbrushes For Blowouts

Picture yourself on vacation, wherever you might be going, with beautiful and voluminous hair. The Ventura Blow-Out Brush is your perfect travel hairbrush.

Blowouts are achieved by styling your hair with a brush while simultaneously blow-drying your hair. Hairstyling can be a time-consuming process both at home and abroad. You want to have the perfect tools to make it as easy as possible.

The Ventura Blow-Out Brush is the ultimate choice for your suitcase. It combines a paddle, round, and vent brush all in one, which is really like the best of worlds. You get a phenomenal multi-faceted brush, all while not taking up too much room in your suitcase.

With a flick of the wrist, you can pull your roots taught to straighten your hair and detangle the ends. The vents allow air from the blow dryer to pass through the brush, which significantly speeds up the drying time.

This brush is also on the larger end, meaning you’ll be able to work through bigger sections of hair. This is an excellent drying brush.

The boar bristles on this fabulous brush will help promote a healthy shine and won’t cause any hair breakage.

The Perfect Travel Hairbrushes For Minimalists

Are you the type of person who prefers to only bring a small carry-on with them? Maybe you don’t like styling your hair and only care about it being tangle-free.

Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

You don’t need a big or bulky brush to get the job done and leave your hairstyle looking effortlessly stylish.

The Carry On brush can brush out all hair types while only occupying a small pocket of your travel bag. It may be small, but it sure is mighty.

This cushion brush is equipped with ball-tipped nylon bristles that work through the toughest of hair.

This brush is small enough to keep in your purse if you run out of room in your main bag.

The Perfect Travel Hairbrushes For Hair Teasing

Voluminous hair is something that we all dream about. Some people are born with luscious thick hair, and others not so much.

Add a little extra oomph to your hair. The Little Wonder Teasing Brush is exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Just like the previous brush mentioned, this teasing essential doesn’t take up too much space in your luggage. This choice leaves you lots of space to pack the perfect outfit.

This brush is adorned with both boar and extended nylon bristles. That combination gives you all of the control in the world since it’s harder to slip through your hair.

The Little Wonder Teasing Brush is great for giving you the voluminous hair we all desire. It will also smooth down all of your baby hairs and flyaways.

You can think of this small tool as both a comb and a hairbrush, which, again, is just one less thing to pack.

To maximize results, make sure not to tug on your hair. Instead, go slow and be gentle on your precious locks.

Spraying yourself down with hairspray beforehand will also be extremely beneficial as it will increase staying power.

The Perfect Travel Hairbrushes For Zero Frizz

Tropical vacations are all the rage. Spending your days at the beach with a cocktail in hand can seem like the ultimate version of paradise.

However, it is essential to note that tropical destinations often equate to heat. Nine times out of ten, heat brings humidity.

Humidity has the power to make a great hair day a disaster in a short amount of time. However, there is a perfect travel brush to keep your hair smooth all day long. The 9000-MF Anti-Static Vent Brush is precisely the thing you’re looking for.

Again, this brush is suitable for all hair types and lengths. It will also work for you if you like to style with a blow dryer. As you remember, the holes in the backside of the brush help your hair to dry faster.

It’s also a great detangling brush.

These bristles are carbon-coated, which is what helps make your hair anti-static. Using this brush in unison with a blow dryer will create gorgeous frizz-free hair. In addition, you will be protected in both dry and wet climates.

To best use the 9000-MF Anti-Static Vent Brush, keep your blow dryer pointed directly at your hair and the brush. Don’t touch your hair with the blow dryer in the process. Damaged hair is known to become frizzier faster.

You can also create volume by brushing up towards the sky and away from your head while drying your hair.

Spornette brushes are the heart of every phenomenal hair care routine. No hairstyle is complete without the perfect brush. So have a good hair day every day with fun summer adventures and a high-quality hairbrush from Spornette.

Since the round brushes range from small to large, you can paint your favorite landscapes or stunning sights with various detailing styles. You can use the broad tips to paint solid colors and the narrow tips to apply intricate strokes and even the littlest details with awesome precision.

Aside from its amazing assortment, each brush boasts its flexible and durable synthetic bristles. Derived from high-quality and anti-shedding nylon wool, these brushes ensure smooth painting and steady color flow.

Brush Shapes

Watercolor brushes vary in shapes: round, flat, bright, angled, script, filbert, fan, and mop. Each of these shapes renders specific strokes, consistencies, and detailing styles that will complement your painting methods and artistic watercolor techniques. Therefore, determining the brush shape will help you choose the type of brush you’re looking for.

To help you understand the characteristics of each brush shape and its primary uses, consider the following comparison:

  • Round: The most versatile shape that can produce various consistencies, intricate details as well as solid lines and colors.
  • Flat: A flat brush has long and flat bristles that form a rectangular shape; it can create controlled strokes and define sharp edges.
  • Bright: It resembles a flat brush but with shorter bristles and forms a square shape instead of a rectangular. It is ideal for washes, controlled strokes, and linear designs.
  • Angled: It can produce flat strokes and varying line widths.
  • Filbert: You can consider this shape for remarkable absorption and fluid retention.
  • Mop or Oval: It is ideal for covering large areas and creating colorful washes.
  • Rigger or Script: It has a long, narrow, pointed tip that renders remarkable precision that is useful when making controlled lines, very fine details, and exhaustive detail work.
  • Fan: This shape is great to use for producing artistic effects, varying textures, and adding decorative details.

Synthetic vs Natural Bristles

The type of bristle or hair can make or break your brush. Whether you choose synthetic or natural bristles, both types offer remarkable merits in terms of fluid retention, absorption, and flow rate.

Natural bristles or animal hairs are typically obtained from sable, hog, squirrel, ox, pony, and goat. They all share pitfalls and advantages although sable is the most popular option among the others.

It is best known for its soft bristles and excellent spring and snap. Some of its examples are the Da Vinci travel watercolor brushes and Isabey travel brush, which are derived from pure red sable hair. However, natural hairs are usually more expensive than synthetic ones.

If you’re not a fan of animal hairs, synthetic bristles must be your best pick. Aside from their more affordable pricing, many premium quality synthetic bristles can mimic the properties and performance of natural bristles. This bristle type is usually made from nylon and polyester fibers that can provide full snap and spring as well as preserve their shapes.

The downside with synthetics is their longevity and durability. Contrary to natural hairs that can last a lifetime, synthetic bristles tend to wear out more quickly.

Size and Portability

Since you’ll be traveling most of the time to paint outdoors or someplace else, you should invest in a compact and lightweight watercolor brushes set. Fortunately, many brands offer an extensive lineup of portable brush sets that can fit even in your pocket. You may also consider those brushes with retractable or detachable handles and short handles for easy transport.

When looking for the best travel watercolor brushes , consider long-term use. Take note of the materials used, bristles, ferrules, and handles. You may also look for reputable and popular brands that are pioneers in manufacturing high-quality artist brushes. Some brands like Escoda watercolor brushes, Raphael, Isabey, and Da Vinci are known for their impeccable durability and performance.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should shy away from other brands. Many watercolor artist brush brands can provide superior performance like the ones mentioned in this guideline. In addition to that, customer reviews can help you compare the features and overall durability of the brushes.

Personal Preferences and Needs

The factors and guidelines will help narrow down your options, but the significant basis of your choices relies on your preferences and painting demands. Therefore, it is a prerequisite to determine your techniques, preferred medium, textures, and artistic effects you want to achieve.

With the plethora of choices out there, finding the best travel watercolor brushes can be crucial. If you often travel or go outdoors for plein air painting, you should go for a lightweight and compact brush.

Ultimately, the right brush depends greatly on your brushwork, preferences, and needs. That’s why you should look for the one that complements your painting styles, techniques, and preferred medium. But no matter what brand, shape, or size you choose, it all comes down to what you’re most comfortable with.

The Best Boar Bristle Brushes for Incredibly Soft and Smooth Hair

These 14 keratin-rich tools will level-up your hair brushing experience.

image of a collection of boar brushes on a pink background

Remember in The Princess Diaries when a hairbrush gets stuck—and subsequently breaks—in Mia Thermopolis's curly hair? For most of my life, that's been my barometer of hair brush's quality. As long as the tool wasn't breaking, I thought it was doing a fine job. Little did I know that the best boar bristle brushes could not only detangle my knots but also make my hair as smooth and shiny as Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia's.

A boar bristle brush is a brush made using the hair of a boar, aka a wild pig. "Just like human hair, boar bristles are entirely composed of keratin, making them particularly resistant, non-allergic, and anti-static," explain Flore des Robert and Pauline Laurent, co-founders of luxury brush brand La Bonne Brosse . Shelly Aguirre, a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, adds that using a boar bristle brush can help improve the elasticity of your hair. "I have found that using a brush with natural boar bristles can help me make the hair strand look smoother," she says.

The benefits don't stop there. Boar bristles also massage and exfoliate your scalp, increasing blood flow and stimulating hair growth. "They distribute your scalp’s natural oils evenly throughout your hair. This creates condition and shine naturally," shares celebrity hairstylist Julius Michael . "Boar bristle brushes offer a lot of tension on your hair when blow-drying without stressing the follicle or hair strand, thus preventing possible damage or breakage you’d get from a synthetic hair brush."

Are you sold yet? Ahead, experts share the best boar bristle brushes for healthy, shiny, and smooth hair.

What to Look For in a Boar Bristle Brush

  • Bristle Type

Of course we're talking boar bristles here, but plenty of brushes feature hybrid selections of boar and nylon bristles—a great thing for certain hair types. Nylon bristles are a bit stiffer, which makes them ideal for working through extra knotty or thick hair.

  • Brush Shape

Like any other hair brush, boar bristle brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. "A boar bristle round brush is used to smooth, add volume, and add shine. It is best used with tension on the hair and with a blow dryer," shares hairstylist Katelyn Ellsworth .

An iconic Mason Pearson brush, in all its unboxed glory.

A flat brush, meanwhile, can help add scalp stimulation and shine without damage. "Moving the brush from the scalp distributes the oils down the hair shaft, creating the perfect end result of soft shiny strands," she adds.

Boar bristle brushes are often expensive, but there are good reasons for that. Besides the fact that they're often handcrafted and generally take more effort to build than their synthetic counterparts, boar bristles aren't an unlimited resource—especially when they're being ethically sourced. "When choosing a brush, always consider the quality of the product," says Aguirre.

Is a Boar Bristle Brush Right for My Hair Type?

While boar bristle brushes are incredibly gentle and suitable for all hair types, certain people can reap the benefits more than others. "Using a boar bristle brush is great with finer hair. It allows you to get good tension without ripping the hair," shares Aguirre. If your hair is coarser, you'll want to make sure the brush is outfitted with reinforced bristles so you can receive the tension you need while still smoothing the cuticle. "The reinforcing bristles are typically nylon which will [also] help distribute your hair's natural oil," she adds.

Boar bristle brushes can be used both to slick back hair styles or create bouncy blowouts.

How Often Should You Use a Boar Bristle Brush

The general consensus is that you should brush your hair twice a day: once in the morning and once at night. "Brushing regularly helps stimulate growth while increasing blood flow to your hair follicles," says Michael. "It also adds natural shine throughout your hair and removes impurities from the environment like dust and dirt."

How to Use a Boar Bristle Brush

"Brush your hair from the scalp all the way to the ends to distribute the oils and stimulate the scalp in order to get the full benefit of the natural bristles and add longevity of your blow dry," adds Ellsworth. Hogan also notes that your hair should be dry .

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

travel brush good

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

While a great grill brush is an essential BBQ tool, a brush can only do so much. To clean a dirty grill and restore cooking grates to their former glory — whether a full-size gas grill , charcoal grill , pellet grill or even a portable grill or indoor grill — you need a great cleaner to remove grease, charred-on food and sticky sauces quickly and easily.

Carbona's 2-in-1 Oven Rack and Grill Cleaner was the top performer in our Lab tests. It's easy and mess-free to use, plus it works overnight for a virtually no-scrub cleaning job . The kit contains a large zip-top plastic bag, a bottle of cleaning solution and some disposable plastic gloves. All you have to do is quickly brush any big chunks of grime off the grates and then place them in the bag. Pour in the solution, seal the bag, swish it around so the grates are covered with cleaner — like a marinade — and head to bed.

In the morning, remove the grates and wipe or lightly scrub them clean. The dirty solution can be rinsed down the drain and the bag disposed of in the trash. Just make sure to place the soaking bag out of reach of children and animals while the cleaner works its magic. And note that, although we found this grill cleaner to be highly effective on gently-used grates, it had a little more trouble on grates covered with caked-on grease. The bright side: We love the versatility — you can use the product on indoor oven racks too.

Goo Gone Grill & Grate Cleaner

Goo Gone Grill and Grate Cleaner is a foam that clings to grate surfaces for more targeted cleaning. Testers found that the comfortable trigger dispenser makes it easy to target the foam into every gritty corner. (Just don't use it on aluminum or faux stainless steel.)

It works quickly too. In tests, the Goo Gone Grill and Grate Cleaner loosened our charred-on soil almost instantly and took only a few minutes to work on tougher, stickier messes . Testers loved that, despite its prowess, the biodegradable formula doesn't have the same harsh fumes other products do. That's because it harnesses the power of citrus oils to cut through grease.

Cleaning your grill is one of those tasks that often gets relegated to the bottom of your to-do list because it feels so cumbersome. But degreasing your grill doesn’t have to be such a dirty job if you have something like Rock Doctor's Master Grill Grate Cleaner at your disposal. In Lab tests, the past GH Cleaning Award winner cleaned cold grates in just five minutes — just as advertised by the brand. Just note: It may take 20 to 30 minutes for very deep cleans.

The foam-action spray is both easy to use and effective. It expertly tackled grimy porcelain and stainless steel grates from all types of grills — gas grills, charcoal grills and smokers — with little effort , even grates that testers told us needed "major cleaning." (Just don't use it on the grill's exterior.)

Originally formulated to clean restaurant grills , Zep Oven and Grill Cleaner was a powerhouse in our tests. We let this foam cleaner sit for the required 10 minutes, and it took the fewest number of swipes — after Carbona — with a damp sponge to take our burnt-on messes right off. We didn't have to do any heavy-duty scrubbing.

And because it's a foam, this hardworking grill cleaner clings to vertical surfaces better than liquids, making it a great cleaning option for other parts of the grill, like inside the lid. It's also great for accessories like a rotisserie. It's very strong though, so make sure to protect any surrounding surfaces before spraying it. And budget a little extra time for cleaning; it takes a full 10 minutes to work its magic.

Parker & Bailey BBQ Grill Cleaner and Degreaser

In our tests, Parker & Bailey loosened tough, sticky, baked-on barbecue sauce after sitting for only two minutes. Then, it took only a swipe with a brush to scrub off the caramelized mess and a quick rinse with water to finish it off. Overall, this product worked much faster than many other products we tested. One at-home tester raved about how quickly it cleaned a grill's stainless steel exterior without streaking. Plus, we loved that, despite its efficacy, the product was largely fume-free.

The cleaner can be used on other grill surfaces, countertops, grilling tools, microwaves and more. But because it's a liquid, it doesn't stick to vertical surfaces and accessories the same way a foam might. What's more, our testers did experience some leaking from the bottle.

Dawn Powerwash isn't just for dishes. Just as it eliminates the messy soaking of cookware and casseroles, it makes cleaning indoor grills and grill pans a breeze. For grill pans and appliances with removable hand-washable grill plates, simply place the grate in the sink, spray on Dawn Powerwash and let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean and rinse. For non-removable plates, spray them carefully in place and wipe and rinse clean with a cloth.

In our testing, Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray easily dissolved hamburger grease burned onto a skillet. That's why it earned our Good Housekeeping Seal . And, you can use it outdoors to degrease and clean larger grills and smokers. We tried it in our testing, and it worked like a charm, despite a few hiccups with the spray trigger every now and again. We also like that once you have the sprayer, all you need is a refill, minimizing your plastic consumption just a little bit.

A winner in a past GH Cleaning Awards , this all-in-one scrubber, scraper and wipe from the Proud Grill Company is a triple-threat cleaner for your outdoor grill . An innovative way to tackle a messy job, it almost eliminates the need for any other cleaning tools. It doesn't have any potentially dangerous bristles, either, so you can feel more confident your food will be perfectly safe to eat.

When we finished using it, we simply threw away the wipe and attached a new one to the scrubber for the next test. It performed well for our pros, and one tester who reported being fussy about keeping his grill clean was impressed by how easy it made scraping and wiping away charred barbecue sauce after cooking ribs.

A Good Housekeeping Seal star , Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes are one of our faves. Our testers say these wipes are a neater and more convenient substitute for traditional sprays or aerosols. They're also highly versatile since you can use them on other stainless steel appliances.

They're highly effective too: A single wipe or two goes a long way to quickly clean and shine the outside of your grill. In our tests, they expertly removed soil — dirt, smudges and fingerprints — without streaking. They also added a protective coating that helped resist new fingerprints. The easy-to-store canister means they'll always be nearby when you need them — just make sure to close the lid tightly. We did notice that the wipes tend to dry out if you're not careful.

How we test grill cleaners

line break

In our most recent category test, we evaluated 23 grill cleaners in the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab. We brushed and broiled several layers of a sticky BBQ sauce mix onto stainless steel and enameled grill grates until they were well coated and resembled what you might see on your outdoor grill after a big cookout.

Once the grates cooled, we used each grill cleaner according to the label directions, noting how well and how quickly it dissolved the sticky mess and counting each scrubbing stroke required to get the grates clean. As with all cleaning products, we reviewed the labels to assess the completeness of the directions and checked for any required safety precautions based on the product's ingredients.

We also headed over to our GH Test Kitchen to clean the indoor grills they use to develop the grill recipes we publish in the magazine and online. Finally, the products were sent home with consumer testers to clean their backyard gas and charcoal grills for a firsthand in-home experience.

What to look for when shopping for the best grill cleaners

line break

Shopping for the best grill cleaner shouldn't be a complicated chore. There are just two things to consider when picking the best grill cleaner for your home:

✔️ Cleaner type: Most grill cleaners are sold as a sprayable foam or liquid, but some brands (like two of our picks on this list) make wipes if you're looking for the simplest product to tackle this daunting chore. Grill cleaners have a reputation for strong, uncomfortable fumes, so choose a formula that doesn't have to be sprayed on, like our top pick from Carbona , or anything in a wipe format to minimize your exposure to any fumes.

✔️ Surface type: Some grill cleaners should not be used on aluminum or faux stainless steel grates. Others are formulated specifically to handle cleaning outdoor grills like pellet grills , while others are better suited for indoor grills and your indoor oven racks. If your grill cleaner doesn't state that it can be used to clean the exterior of your grill, don't use it there. The strong cleaning agents that get burnt-on food off your grill grates can permanently damage the exterior shine of your grill. Instead, opt for a stainless steel cleaner that you would use on your inside appliances to keep your grill exteriors as good as new.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

travel brush good

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

travel brush good

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

travel brush good

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

travel brush good

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

travel brush good

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

travel brush good

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

travel brush good

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

Beautiful (and less crowded) alternatives to the 10 most popular US national parks

National parks are popular for a reason but with visitation numbers growing each year, some travelers might be looking toward similar experiences with less of the hassle that comes with visiting a top 10 national park.

I’m Ashley, and I’ve been covering travel and the outdoor space for nearly a decade. Every year, the National Park Service releases annual visitation numbers from the previous year, and as a travel expert and journalist, I think it’s a helpful tool to use when researching national park travel.

The most visited national parks generally remain the same year to year with some variance due to weather and other events. In 2023, two parks rose to top 10 status, Grand Teton and Olympic, which were further down in visitation in 2022.

GORGEOUS ALL YEAR: The best national parks for every season

To help recommend some alternative destinations to the most visited national parks, I talked to Erin Ruane from RV Trader to get her takes on locations that give you the same feel and opportunity for similar activities.

Instead of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, visit…

With nearly 13.3 million visitors last year, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP for short) saw 14% of all national parks visits. There’s so much to see in the surrounding areas that you can get a similar feel and activity offerings just outside the park.

PARKITECTURE: Check out these iconic national park lodges

To avoid the crowds and parking fees of GSMNP, Ruane recommends visiting Cherokee, North Carolina, which is home to the park’s quieter entrance, Oconaluftee: “Cherokee is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, one of three recognized Cherokee tribes in the U.S. While it’s a sovereign nation, visitors are invited to experience the area’s culture through arts and crafts shopping, native elk viewing, and historic attractions.”

More options:

  • Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina
  • Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina
  • Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Instead of Grand Canyon National Park, visit…

I love the Grand Canyon for families , but there’s no getting around its crowds at popular times of year given that the park attracts 4.7 million annual visitors.

MAKE MEMORIES: Great family vacations for single and solo parents

Ruane recommends another large canyon in Arizona, Sycamore, which is the state’s inaugural designated wilderness area. Ruane loves the canyon's “vibrant cliffs, towering pinnacles, and desert riparian zones, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain lions, and various other creatures. Encompassed by the Prescott, Kaibab, and Coconino National Forests, key attractions within the wilderness include Sycamore Falls and the Paradise Forks climbing crag.”

  • Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado
  • Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas
  • Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Instead of Zion National Park, visit…

Zion can be a fickle national park to visit between crowds and weather, you really have to time your visit right to have a go at popular hikes like Angels Landing and the Narrows.

INSPO AHEAD: 50 amazing family vacation ideas from experts

Instead of competing with the parks annual 4.6 million visitors, consider activities in the surrounding Greater Zion area, like the Belly of the Dragon hike (bring a flashlight or headlamp), Red Hollow Slot Canyon, and Kanab Sand Caves: “These experiences not only involve a moderate hike but also provide opportunities to enhance your agility. The blend of natural wonders and man-made formations within these sites offers breathtaking views of canyons, creating a genuine sense of adventure as you navigate through captivating caverns,” says Ruane.

  • Canyonlands National Park, Utah
  • Snow Canyon State Park, Utah
  • Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Instead of Yellowstone National Park, visit…

Yellowstone’s geothermal features and wildlife make it one of the most popular parks in the U.S. with nearly 4.5 million annual visitors.

  • 10 best New England lakes for summer fun
  • 10 family-friendly mountain resorts in the U.S. for summer fun
  • 11 best national parks for families to visit in summer

But the park’s surrounding area offers other similar activities, like in West Yellowstone: “West Yellowstone is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, boasting ATV, UTV and snowmobile trails, fly fishing, and whitewater rafting. The southern Montana town also has year-round family friendly events and restaurants serving up regional specialities,” recommends Ruane.

More options:

  • Lassen Volcanic National Park, California
  • Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota
  • Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota

Instead of Rocky Mountain National Park, visit…

With 4.1 million annual visitors and timed entry passes required during peak season, Rocky Mountain National Park has plenty of alternatives that offer similar activities and geography with more flexibility in planning.

SLEEP WELL: Best hotel booking sites, reviewed

Ruane recommends the nearby, 1.5-million-acre Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests: “Renowned for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing, the forest offers numerous trails and campsites. Visitors can explore the Indian Peaks Wilderness, enjoy scenic drives along the Cache la Poudre River, and witness diverse wildlife.”

  • Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
  • Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado
  • Pinnacles National Park, California

Instead of Yosemite National Park, visit…

California’s crown jewel of a national park attracts nearly 3.9 million visitors every year and requires seasonal entrance passes that need to be reserved in advance.

CLOSE TO THE PARK: Best hotels near Yosemite National Park

A little over 2 hours south, you’ll find Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks that offer similar landscapes and activities to Yosemite: “Sequoia, situated in California's Sierra Nevada, is renowned for its towering sequoia trees, including the iconic General Sherman Tree, the largest living tree on Earth … Kings Canyon, adjacent to Sequoia, is characterized by the impressive Kings Canyon, one of the deepest in North America. The park offers a mix of rugged terrain, waterfalls, and scenic canyons. Notable attractions include Zumwalt Meadows, Roaring River Falls, and the majestic Kings Canyon Scenic Byway,” says Ruane.

Instead of Acadia National Park, visit…

As the only national park in the Northeast, Maine’s Acadia National Park attracts nearly 3.9 million visitors each year.

While it’s the getaway to the national park, Bar Harbor offers plenty to do without needing to enter Acadia: “The town boasts an array of quaint shops and diverse restaurants, providing a perfect setting for leisurely strolls and exploration. The waterfront views are especially captivating, providing a backdrop of rugged coastline and serene harbors. Bar Harbor's welcoming atmosphere and proximity to Acadia make it an ideal base for those seeking a balance between outdoor adventures and charming coastal experiences,” says Ruane.

  • Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, Vermont
  • Voyageurs National Park National Park, Minnesota
  • White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire

Instead of Grand Teton National Park, visit…

Wyoming’s Grand Teton saw 3.4 million annual visitors, adding it to the top 10 list of most visited parks this year.

Instead, Ruane recommends visiting the nearby Snake River, located in the Jackson Hole valley: “A scenic float trip allows for a leisurely drift along the river, providing breathtaking views of the Teton Range and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Alternatively, adrenaline seekers can embark on thrilling whitewater rafting adventures, navigating the river's rapids for an exciting and immersive experience.”

  • Curt Gowdy State Park, Wyoming
  • Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Colorado and Wyoming
  • Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho

Instead of Joshua Tree National Park, visit…

Southern California’s Joshua Tree is a popular location for weekend trips from Los Angeles and shoulder season travel seeing about 3.3 million visitors each year.

To the southeast you’ll find the state’s largest lake, the Salton Sea State Recreation Area, where there's "birdwatching, fishing, and exploration of the lake's distinct desert landscapes. The area's diverse ecosystem attracts a variety of bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers,” says Ruane.

  • Big Bend National Park, Texas
  • Channel Islands National Park, California
  • Mojave National Preserve, California

Instead of Olympic National Park, visit…

The Washington park went from the 14th most visited park in 2022 to the 10th in 2023, seeing nearly 2.9 million annual visitors.

Enjoy similar landscapes nearby at Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, near Port Angeles: “Visit the Dungeness Spit, a unique sand spit that extends into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It's a great place for birdwatching and enjoying the coastal scenery,” recommends Ruane.

  • North Cascades National Park, Washington

The Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend — With Up to 18 Shooting Stars Per Hour

It's the first of 2 meteor showers happening this spring.

The next few weeks are busy with meteor showers, including the Lyrids’ peak this weekend — a show that could bring eye-popping fireballs, depending on the conditions. The Lyrid meteor shower, which peaks overnight from April 21-22, is the first of two spring meteor showers; the second, the Eta Aquariids, will peak in early May.

This weekend’s event could produce up to 18 streaking Lyrids per hour in peak conditions, according to NASA . Unfortunately, it hits during a bright waxing gibbous moon, which will make viewing trickier — but all is not lost. If you’re in a dark-sky destination from April 21-22, it’s still worth giving the Lyrids a go.

Here’s how and when to watch the 2024 Lyrid meteor shower, plus when to catch the next one.

What Makes the Lyrid Meteor Shower Special?

Debris and particles from Comet Thatcher create the Lyrids, an annual spring meteor shower known for vibrant fireballs (astonishingly bright meteors), as well as spontaneous outbursts. During the latter — which occurs when the shower generates an eye-popping number of shooting stars — happens roughly every 60 years, according to EarthSky . The next outburst isn’t expected to hit until 2042.

How to See the 2024 Lyrid Meteor Shower

The full 2024 Lyrid meteor shower runs from April 14 to 30, with peak activity striking between the Sunday and Monday night, according to The Planetary Society . Point your eyes toward the constellation Lyra to watch for the spectacle. It will rise above the northeast horizon around 10 p.m. While stargazers can technically view the Lyrid meteor shower from the southern hemisphere, it is easiest to observe it from the northern hemisphere.

Will 2024 be a Good Year for the Lyrid Meteor Shower?

This year, the bright moon, which will be out all night, will likely obscure many streaking meteors. Increase your odds of catching the show by watching from a stargazing-friendly destination — here are some of our favorite dark-sky getaways . Or, hold out just a bit longer to enjoy another spring meteor shower — the Eta Aquariids — which will peak near the dim, near-new moon on May 6.
