There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.

The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England ,  here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's  Amazing Train Journeys .

1. The Sunset Limited

Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m)  Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.

4. The California Zephyr

Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.

6. The New Mexico Rail Runner

Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes

One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.

On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.

7. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours

The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks.

From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.

8. The Vermonter

Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes

The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.

Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train. 

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in. 

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

2.  Coast Starlight

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows. 

3.  Pacific Surfliner

San Diego, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state. 

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas. 

5.  The Empire Builder

Chicago, IL to Portland, OR

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight. 

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild. 

7.  Skunk Train

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day. 

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

11.  California Zephyr

Emeryville, CA to Reno, NV

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.  

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train. 

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, CO to Silverton, CO

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

New York City, NY to Burlington, VT

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

Many top-rated rail journeys showcase abundant national wonders, including famous mountain ranges, national parks, landmarks, and more. Capitol Limited

Aboard the Capitol Limited, passengers can enjoy a leisurely trip between Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Approximately an 18-hour overnight journey, the Capitol Limited travels over 760 miles and stops in major cities such as Pittsburgh and Cleveland. During this rail tour, travelers can expect all-around striking views of the Allegheny Mountains, Potomac River, Harpers Ferry National Park, and much more. Capitol Limited passengers can also marvel at the one-of-a-kind Pittsburgh cityscape and gaze upon Ohio farmlands before rolling into the Windy City when traveling westbound.

Passengers can also select from a variety of accommodations and amenties distributed among the train's upper and lower levels. An unrestricted dining service for travelers in private rooms is also available. An added bonus is that this train has a pet program, allowing your small dog or cat to appreciate the views right along with you. Note, however, that there is no WiFi and observation car on this route.

Coast Starlight

Traveling between Seattle to Los Angeles aboard the Coast Starlight gives passengers a front-row seat to the natural splendor of the West Coast. With stops in places like Portland and Sacramento, this Amtrak route covers 1,377 miles and takes approximately 36 hours. It’s 2024, so the idea of sustainable travel is hardly a new concept. There’s a certain attraction to ditching long plane journeys and airport hassle but still getting to your holiday destination. If there are other ways to travel, why fly? In most cases, train stations are located in the heart of the city so you’ll arrive closer to where you want to be, rather than have to spend money on taxis or other forms of transport.

While rail travel in the UK remains as expensive and controversial as ever , train companies across Europe have been refining and expanding their services to make travelling across the continent more convenient.

From Eurostar’s cross-channel journeys to overnight sleeper trains that take you through several countries while you snooze, train travel across the region has never been as accessible. With the summer fast approaching, take advantage of the rails to reach some of Europe’s best destinations.

Paris, France

Paris is just over two hours from London

The French capital has been a brilliant city to visit by train since the launch of Eurostar in 1994. Nowadays, trains from St Pancras International will get you there in around two hours and 16 minutes, making it a potential day-trip destination as well as a great place for a weekend break. As a transport hub, it also serves as the changing destination for many of the other cities on this list, with easy travel to the rest of France, Belgium and Spain, among others.

From the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower, explore the city’s various ‘arrondissements’ (districts) for a chance to take in world-famous landmarks, galleries and museums while wandering through the city’s streets. The 19th-century Hausmannian architecture adds to the city’s unique style and romance, while a world-famous gastronomic scene offers everything from fine dining to casual patisseries.

Bruges is easily reachable with a change in Brussels

Bruges is another destination that benefits from Eurostar’s routes into France and Belgium. Trains from London change at Brussels-Midi/Zuid, with a further 70 minutes before reaching the northern city. It’s also a great spot for further travel around the country, with trains to Ghent and Antwerp taking just 30 and 90 minutes, respectively.

Once in Bruges, enjoy the picturesque canals and dramatic architecture as you wander its winding streets. Winter visits are great for the famous Christmas Market , although the city comes alive in summer, with the colourful buildings and canals resplendent in the sunshine. The historic core is a Unesco Heritage Site, with several interesting landmarks, including the City Hall, the Groeninge Museum and the Belfry.

How to get to Bruges by train

Despite being housed in a 14th-century building, Hotel Monsieur Ernest has slick, modern interiors that are at odds with the Gothic and Middle Aged architecture in areas such as the nearby Market Square. Combined with the preserved period features, it makes for an interesting mix.

Venice, Italy

If you don’t mind making a day of it, you can catch a post-breakfast train in Paris and arrive in Venice in the evening. Glide beneath bridges on a gondola, taking in the stunning Renaissance architecture. Explore St. Mark’s Square, a vibrant hub with cafes and the iconic basilica. Get lost in the maze of alleyways, stumbling upon hidden squares and artisan workshops. For a unique experience, visit Murano, famous for its centuries-old glassblowing tradition, or Burano, a colorful island known for its lace.

There’s plenty for food lovers, too. Make sure to try chichetti, which are small Venetian tapas, perfect for a casual lunch or aperitivo. They come in a variety of flavours, from seafood options like salt cod crostini to meatballs and vegetables.

How to get to Venice by train

The TGV-Lyria from Paris to Zurich is an impressive 320km/h (199mph) double-deck high-speed train. Change trains in Zurich for the prettiest part of the route where a EuroCity train passes Lake Como and heads through the Alps over the Gotthard route, past pretty Lake Lugano. Finally, from Milan you’ll take a high speed Frecciarossa operated by Italian Rail to Venice.

Philippe Starck designed the interiors of the 16th-century Palazzina Grassi. It’s 26 rooms are full of signature Starck touches: mirrored walls, ceilings and chairs, carnival masks and stools that look like silver-coated tree-stumps. There’s no check-in desk here – it’s way too cool for that – but there is a Krug Lounge (the second in the world) and a beautiful main room – low-lit and framed by Corinthian columns – which serves as a restaurant, bar and lobby area.

Berlin, Germany

With new overnight routes launched by Dutch-Belgian rail company European Sleeper in May 2023, Berlin has suddenly become much more accessible by train. The German capital is another trendy European destination, whether you’re a hardcore partygoer or a history buff. Of course, many visitors choose to sample both on their visit, so time can be spent trying to gain entry to the city’s notoriously strict nightclubs or wandering around the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall.

While other sites such as Checkpoint Charlie or the Brandenburg Gate attract thousands of tourists, it’s a good idea to simply wander some of the city’s varied districts. Mitte is the heart of the city, though Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg are other great options for an afternoon wander.

How to get to Berlin by train

The overnight sleeper train runs from Brussels, with services departing at 7.22pm local time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and arriving at 6.48am the next morning. The company have aligned its schedules with Eurostar’s arrivals, meaning the changeover should be easy enough. europeansleeper.eu

Prague, Czech Republic

The European Sleeper route added two stops in 2024: Dresden and Prague . This makes travelling from the UK (and indeed Brussels) far easier. If you’re travelling from London, you can jump on an afternoon Eurostar to Brussels and then book a cosy couchette to get a good night’s rest while the sleeper travels next to the river Elbe overnight.

Prague’s focal point is its remarkable Old Town, replete with winding cobbled streets and dozens of choices for drinking and dining. Old Town Square is the heart of the city, while Wenceslas Square is just five minutes away. Across the river, on a hill overlooking the city, stands Prague Castle, the largest ancient castle in the world.

How to get to Prague by train

Barcelona, Spain

With trains operating every day from Paris, Barcelona is a surprisingly easy city to reach from the UK. TGV operate fast trains that take just over six hours, meaning that you can easily have breakfast in London and end the day sipping cocktails opposite the Sagrada Familia. Spain’s rebellious second city is the cosmopolitan cousin of Madrid, where European and Spanish influences mix to create a unique, eclectic destination.

Its location is perfect for holidays, as the sprawling metropolis leads you right to the coast, where long stretches of golden sand and warm sea meet bustling beach bars and nightclubs. There are more tourist sites than you could possibly cover in a single weekend break – from the Gaudi buildings to the Olympic Park at Montjuic – but what sets the city apart from other European destinations is the quality and range of things to do. Vienna, Austria

Though the journey to Vienna can be done in a single day from London, Austria’s own OBB train service offers comfortable overnight trains from Brussels that reach the capital pleasantly early in the morning. Arriving just after 9am, you’ll be able to make the most of your first day in this grand old city.

It is perhaps no surprise that the city of Freud, Mozart and Beethoven has a sophisticated vibe. This feeling is increased to by the vibrant culture and arts scene found today, while its well-preserved architecture reflects a rich and complicated history that stretches back to Roman times. Here, Gothic cathedrals meet Baroque palaces and the world-famous Renaissance Revival-style Opera House – all buildings which help to preserve a sense of elegance and grandeur.

How to get to Vienna by train

The most time-effective option is to make use of Austria’s OBB Nightjet service. Take the Eurostar to Brussels and change for a direct overnight train to Vienna. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

While the train to Amsterdam takes a much longer than flying, take this opportunity to see great countryside views in northern France and Belgium. You’ll arrive at Amsterdam Centraal, where you can step out of the station and right into the centre of the city.

The Dutch capital’s scenic network of canals – backed by seemingly endless rows of 17th-century houses – steal the show in this exceptionally walkable (and cyclable) city, while its parks, such as Vondelpark and Oosterpark, provide numerous pleasant green areas. The Red Light District attracts hundreds of visitors every day, while historical sites and museums including the Anne Frank House and Rijksmuseum are among the other worthwhile attractions.

The Craftsmen is a classic example of a quirky, characterful Dutch hotel. Sitting along the Singel canal near the city centre, its cosy interiors and eccentric decoration make it a hotel fitting of such a fantastic European city.

Milan, Italy

The journey to Milan offers scenic views as it passes through sections of the French and Italian Alps. Italy’s second city is known worldwide for the finer things in life – whether that be cuisine, high-end fashion or expensive aperitifs – and you can find them all in abundance when you arrive.

The Duomo cathedral (and its piazza) are at the heart of the city; from here, you can easily reach sites such as the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele, the Santa Maria basilica and the Sforzesco Castle. Gala Yuzawa is one of the most popular ski and snowboarding resorts in Japan . This is partly because it’s the easiest to reach from Tokyo with its convenient bullet train access.

Located in Niigata Prefecture, Gala Yuzawa is known for its heavy snowfall and excellent powder snow. It’s a great destination if you want to ski or snowboard while in Japan in the winter.

How to get to Gala Yuzawa by Shinkansen

Gala Yuzawa is located around 166km from Tokyo (approximately 91.8 km by road).

It’s easy to reach by Shinksan bullet train from the capital. The ride from Tokyo to Gala Yuzawa is fully covered by the JR Pass .

Gala Yuzawa is unique among Japan’s ski resorts, as it has its very own Shinkansen station directly connected to the ski center . It’s just a stone’s throw away from the slopes.

To arrive right in the heart of the resort, simply take the Joetsu Shinkansen Tanigawa service directly to Gala Yuzawa from Tokyo Station. There are around 12 daily services and the ride takes as little as 75 minutes.

You can also take the Joetsu Shinkansen Tanigawa service if you’re coming from Saitama (1 hour) or Takasaki (30 mins) . These services to Echigo Yuzawa run every hour.

Like the Tōhoku Shinkansen and the Hokkaidō Shinkansen, the Joetsu Shinkansen is operated by JR East.

Arriving via shuttle bus

Not all Joetsu Shinkansen trains stop at Gala Yuzawa. You should be aware that Toki services on this line do not stop at the resort.

However, another option is to take the Toki service to Echigo Yuzawa Station , the main station in Yuzawa city.

You can then take a free shuttle bus to Gala Yuzawa resort from outside the East Exit of Echigo Yuzawa station. The bus ride takes less than 5 minutes.

Why Gala Yuzawa is so popular

Since opening in 1990, Gala Yuzawa has been extremely popular for winter sports enthusiasts looking for a day or weekend trip from Tokyo. This is because it’s one of the best ski resorts near Tokyo.

It’s also interconnected with other nearby ski resorts such as Yuzawa Kogen and Ishiuchi Maruyama. You can also easily reach both by taking a shuttle bus from Echigo Yuzawa Station.

However, it is worth mentioning that while it is easy to access from Tokyo to Gala Yuzawa can be extremely busy on weekends and holidays . This is especially true when the snow is good .

Features of Gala Yuzawa

This medium-sized, well-equipped resort is a great spot for skiing and snowboarding in Japan. It offers over 33.8 km of slopes for all levels (including 2.5 km downhill course.).

Gala Yuzawa is divided into three main areas , the Central Area, Southern Area and Northern Area (connected to Yuzawa Kogen). The slopes are suited to beginners and intermediates, with gentler slopes in the Central Area and expert options in the other two.

Gala Yuzawa has heaps of other fun features. There’s a snow park, sledding slopes , and the Bell of Love observation deck, where you can enjoy a stunning panorama of the surrounding mountains.

There are also a number of ski and snowboard schools in Gala Yuzawa. These offer lessons in either Japanese or English and are led by experienced instructors who know the slopes well.

A luxury high-speed train between two major European cities has put the UK ’s creaking rail network to shame.

The £8.1billion line linking Barcelona and Madrid allows passengers to whizz the 385-mile distance in just two and a half hours.

The new leg, connecting the Catalonian capital with Madrid, launched in February 2008 after five years of construction on existing tracks, which are compatible with those in neighbouring France .

And it’s proven popular ever since, carrying 4.4million passengers in 2019 alone.

Locals and tourists alike can enjoy the views on board the train as it zooms at 174mph (280km/h) from Barcelona-Sants, then stops in Zaragoza before finishing at Madrid-Puerta de Atocha.

Travelling by car, the same distance across Spain would take close to seven hours.

And don’t get us started on the cost – or time – of a similar journey across the UK…

UK trains compared

Spain boasts one of the longest high-speed networks in Europe and the second longest in the world, after China.

It spans 2,464 miles compared to the UK’s 67 miles of purpose-built tracks, with only a handful of these built for faster trains.

Trains on the East Coast Main Line, Great Western Main Line, Midland Main Line and parts of Cross Country Route and West Coast Main Line can reach maximum speeds of 125mph on the upgraded tracks.

This means the 400-mile train journey from London to Edinburgh takes around four and a half hours.

Standard tickets on LNER from King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley start from £49 without a Railcard.

The purpose-built 67-mile HS1 connecting London with the Channel Tunnel allows trains to travel at up to 186mph (300km/h).

What passengers in Britain are eagerly awaiting is the highly controversial HS2 , a high-speed rail network due to be completed in 2033.

But the project been marred by delays and spiraling costs. And now, an entire leg to North West has been cancelled.

Former prime minister Rishi Sunak announced late last year that the high-speed train will run only from London to the West Midlands after the Manchester leg was shelved.

Even previous PMs David Cameron and Boris Johnson criticised the move, saying it signaled that the UK could not make long-term decisions.

The cancelled section of the HS2 from Birmingham to Manchester could be replaced by alternative connections, but it will be up to local leaders like the metro mayors.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has been one of the scheme’s harshest critics. He claimed the government was treating people in the region as ‘second class citizens’ by axing the Manchester leg, according to the BBC .

Meanwhile, the cost of the remaining London to Birmingham stretch has ballooned to around £66billion, which is up to £10billion more than the 2019 estimate.

In recent years, UK train travel has been hit by industrial action and chronic delays, leading critics of the rail system to push for reform.

Unions including the RMT have accused the government and rail companies of hampering jobs, pay and conditions.

Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner declared the UK’s railway system to be ‘crumbling’ in an interview with the BBC in 2022, while she was still deputy Labour leader.

Rail travel campaigners from the Campaign for Better Transport have called for an overhaul of the fares system, saying there are ‘absurd inconsistencies’ between tickets, the Evening Standard reports.

Now Labour has been voted into government, it has promised to overhaul the country’s trains by bringing the network under public ownership run by one operator called Great British Railways.

Spain: A perfect picture?

The situation is different in Spain, although it is far from perfect.

Critics there have cited the high costs of sprawling Alta Velocidad Espanola (AVE) high-speed network and its reported underuse, according to the industry outlet Railway Technology .

Spain has spent more than €40billion on its high-speed service, a Spanish think thank FEDEA estimates.

To get to the capital Madrid from Barcelona, passengers can take their pick between national rail operator Renfe and private companies Ouigo Espana and Iryo, which all operate services on the line.

But what about tickets?

The good news is that rail travel in Spain is cheap, at least compared to rocketing costs in the UK that have left many disillusioned.

Tickets on the Barcelona-Madrid high-speed train start from around €30 (£25), though prices vary depending on the operator and optional perks.

You can splash out on a first-class ticket with a bistro meal and an extra-large seat with Iryo from around €51.

I spent $38,000 to take my toy poodle on a private jet to Japan. I want to plan a trip for my other dogs next.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Gladys Tsoi, a 29-year-old dog owner and investment banker based in Hong Kong. This essay has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider verified Tsoi's receipts.

In April, I treated my toy poodle, Hershey, to a luxurious vacation in Japan. We traveled there together on a private jet.

It was the second time we'd traveled to Japan together in four months. The first flight, from our home base in Hong Kong, was on a commercial airline and cost me $10,100. The second trip came with a significantly higher price tag of $38,000. Despite the hefty expenses, I have no regrets about splurging on my furry companion.

Years of saving while working full-time at an investment bank have given me the capacity to comfortably spend this much on vacation. I also earn additional income with my pet influencer Instagram account , where I occasionally get paid for partnerships and brand collaborations.

I wanted to give Hershey a better life

In 2021, I came across a Facebook post about a toy poodle that had been subjected to abusive breeders and needed a new home. I wanted her to have a better life, so I initiated a trial adoption. After one week, we made it official, marking the beginning of Hershey's journey from a neglected past to a life filled with love and adventure.

At the time, Hershey was two and a half years old, and I already had two other dogs: Milo, a 9-year-old mutt, and Malibu, a 1-year-old labradoodle.

I'm 29 and have been dreaming about traveling abroad with my dogs for years. I decided that this was the year to do it.

My family and I chose Hershey, among my trio of dogs, due to her exceptional temperament. I had full confidence she'd cope with the plane rides and adapt to the new environment.

Planning these journeys took about a year, from securing a reliable pet travel agent and managing import-export paperwork to multiple vet check-ups and extra vaccinations to meet Japan's stringent medical standards for pets . Securing flights with pet-friendly seating and accommodations added to the stress. But it was all worth it in the end.

I chose Japan for its pet-friendly culture. Finding accommodation, dining options and parks open to dogs was easy. Pets are even allowed on public transport if they're in a carrier.

And as a big fan of Japanese pet products, the destination was an ideal fit.

Hershey's first trip overseas was in January 2024.

Our first trip to Japan included two other poodle friends, while our second trip in April 2024 was a family affair with my parents and brother.

The first was an epic road trip covering over 1,200 miles, spanning seven prefectures and including stops in Tokyo, Mount Fuji , Hakuba, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Izu.

We flew to Tokyo on Korean Air, transiting in Seoul, and returned via Japan Airlines cargo. This involved many flight procedures, including securing a pet seat and handling Hershey's paperwork and check-ups.

We took advantage of the city's pet-friendly offerings during our stay in Tokyo. We stayed in Inumo Shibakoen Hotel , which had amenities like capsule machines with pet supplements, free professional pet photoshoot sessions, free pet grooming, and a gourmet pet dining menu. We explored iconic landmarks like Tokyo Tower and Shibuya Crossing.

There were plenty of pet-friendly restaurants, including one with tailored teppanyaki meals — where we all watched the meat being prepared on the grill.

We went glamping under Mount Fuji, and Hershey had her first snow experience in Hakuba. In Kyoto, we immortalized our trip with a traditional photo shoot, where Hershey and I wore matching kimonos. In Nara, Hershey got to mingle with friendly Japanese deer. In Osaka, we wandered into pet-friendly shops, and in Izu, we went hiking around Mount Omuro.

For the second trip, we opted for a private jet both ways.

Our second trip, which took place in April, lasted 8 days and covered 10 prefectures. We focused on Kyushu , an island in southwestern Japan.

Our road trip took us through Fukuoka, Oita, Yufuin, Kumamoto, Beppu, Nagasaki, Yanagawa, Sasebo, and Itoshima. Our main goal was to witness Japan's spring flower season. Opting for a private jet made this journey simpler compared to our first trip, with our pet travel agent handling all flight arrangements seamlessly. Hershey and I took the private jet, while the rest of the family flew over separately.

We enjoyed Fukuoka's countryside charm. A local photographer captured family moments amid cherry blossoms, and Hershey explored pet-friendly flower parks.

In Oita and Yufuin, glamping by Mount Aso provided a tranquil retreat, while Hershey savored local attractions like Yufuin floral village and Yanagawa's rivers. Sasebo offered a European vibe with tulip fields, while in Kumamoto we went strawberry picking and visited the zoo.

In Kumamoto, we stayed in a private lodge run by a local family. It was equipped with a doggy gym, professional dog grooming room, dog park, and private onsen.

We enjoyed Beppu's natural hot springs the following day and stayed at Hotel Nampuro in Nagasaki. The hotel had a three-course pet-friendly dining menu.

Next time, we will probably bring another pup along.

Both trips came with hefty price tags, especially round two when I opted for a private jet. The cost of hotels added up to around $5,000. In hindsight, every cent was well spent.

Some may consider my splurges excessive, but witnessing the pure joy on Hershey's face is what gives my life meaning and purpose.

For our next trip, I'm contemplating bringing one of my larger canine companions, either Milo or Malibu, along for the journey.
