Sample Itinerary | A typical vacation in Iceland!

Each small group tour package will be fitted to the dates you provide and include as many of your requested activities as is possible, so no two packages are quite the same. however, the below sample itinerary is a good example of something that is quite achievable over the space of a typical vacation. if you include everything noted, you will need a full 9 days, including arrival and departure day. of course, this can be amended to as many or as few days as you wish. the suggestions below are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we can create for you. we hope you like what we’ve come up with, arrival day , upon arriving in iceland, we’ll have you transfer from kef airport to reykjavík . depending on arrival times, this could be the day you stop off at the  blue lagoon before heading to reykjavík. your driver would wait patiently while you relax in the warm waters of the blue lagoon. afterward, they’ll transfer you to reykjavík to check in to your accommodation there., later in the day, you could also look to join our friends from wake up reykjavík for their reykjavík food walk . this is a great way to get to know the culinary culture of reykjavík, as well as getting to know the city better. the 3.5 hour tour includes all food from 5 restaurants in reykjavík. you won’t walk away from this tour feeling hungry, golden circle: platinum tour, you start the day by bathing at the oldest hot pool in the country, the secret lagoon. then you’ll eat inside a geothermal tomato greenhouse called friðheimar with towering tomato plants. in the afternoon, you check out the most popular attractions in the country. this includes visiting the thunderous  gullfoss waterfall  and the ever erupting geyser,  strokkur . at the end of the day, you will drive through the þingvellir national park , where the original parliament was first held. coincidentally, this is also an area of geologically significance too. in fact, here, you can literally cross from one tectonic plate to another. iceland literally bridges the gap. not many people can say they’ve jumped continents without getting their feet wet..

Þingvellir National Park. Thingvellir. þingvellir.

JÖKULSÁRLÓN GLACIER LAGOON 2-DAY TOUR

In summer, this adventurous 2-day tour includes an exciting glacier hike with incredible views overnight under the midnight sun . in winter, we swap the hike out for an incredible blue ice cave visit. at night, you might even get a chance to see the northern lights right from outside your room. fingers crossed, on day one, we travel the entire south coast, but instead of heading back to reykjavík, we continue east to the vatnajökull national park  where we will encounter city – sized glaciers and towering volcanoes. along the way you will get the chance to walk behind the 200ft seljalandsfoss waterfall, get up close to the impressive skógafoss waterfall and walk along the reynisfjara black sand beach, where you can see thousands of puffins in summer and crashing waves in winter. later, you’ll get to walk along a 330ft gorge called fjaðrárgljúfur before staying overnight in a cozy guest house , situated on a working sheep farm., the following day you will get up early to stop off at the mesmerizing diamond beach and again at the  jökulsárlón glacier lagoon  to watch the icebergs glisten as the sun rises in the distance. then it’s onto the adventurous part of the day, the glacier hike in summer and the blue ice cave in winter..

ENCHANTING SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA

The  snæfellsnes peninsula is often referred to as ‘little iceland’, since it seems to have a little bit of everything from the rest of the country. on this small group tour, you’ll stand awed by the kirkjufell  volcanic mountain from game of thrones. you’ll find peace while hiding behind a secret waterfall at  sellvallavatn, and  you’ll fill your belly with a local lunch. in the afternoon, we’ll whiz around the snæfellsjökull volcano with its ice cap just before hiking along the broken sea cliffs in the south of the peninsula at arnarstapi ..

Our tour was well planned and well executed from beginning to end. We appreciated the book and map and all the advance information we were given. Our questions were answered and our needs were met promptly and competently. The trip itself was wonderful. We were happy to leave the itinerary and the driving to experts.  And we had the best guide ever! Orvar was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic and fun.

We thoroughly enjoyed every part of our tour package. Our tour guide, Dagur, was truly outstanding and did a fantastic job teaching us about Icelandic culture, geography, and history. I picked the small group tour option to avoid driving in the snow. When we reached eastern & northern Iceland and I saw the road conditions, I knew that I had made the right decision! Dagur was also an excellent driver who got us everywhere safely. I also want to make a special mention of my Nordic Visitor travel consultant, Margrét. She was very pleasant, organised and efficient in answering all my emails and arranging our travel plans.

Frequently Asked Questions About Iceland Guided Tour Packages

You may have a few questions before you book your guided tour, so we’ve collected the most commonly asked ones for your convenience. If you’d like more in-depth information, check out this helpful Iceland Travel Guide .

It’s also good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. To find out about our booking process, payments and more, please read our FAQs and booking terms .

1. WHAT IS A SMALL GROUP TOUR?

A small group tour is where a guide leads you and a few fellow travellers on an adventure together. Your expert local guide will share their in-depth knowledge of the area with you while taking you to all the best spots.

As well as being able to learn from top guides, we believe that by capping group numbers you’ll have a more personal experience. This is why our small group tours have a maximum of 16 people. Plus, exploring in a minibus means you will be able to visit places that large groups and coaches can’t get to.

2. IS IT SAFE TO EXPLORE ICELAND ON A GUIDED TOUR?

Iceland is among the safest countries in the world. It has a first-rate health system that is consistently rated higher than larger countries such as Australia, the USA, and the UK. You can read tips and advice about health and safety in Iceland here before you travel.

3. WHY IS A LOCAL TOUR GUIDE IMPORTANT?

A local tour guide is a fantastic addition to your Iceland adventure. They’ll not only share their favourite parts of Iceland with you, but you’ll also learn what makes Iceland so special from someone who calls it home.

Not only will your Nordic Visitor tour guide meet the industry standards, but they are also eager to share their passion for Iceland with you.

4. WHO GOES ON YOUR GUIDED TOURS?

We welcome a wide range of customers who can choose from tours with a variety of excursions, tour themes and activity levels. This means you’ll find that our guests often vary in age.

While there’s no upper age limit on our trips, please get in touch if you’d like to know more about a tour’s activity levels and accessibility.

5. ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED TO JOIN THE TOUR?

Children over the age of 12 can join our guided small group tours. If you are travelling to Iceland with kids , we also recommend looking into our child-friendly self-drive tours as these offer more flexibility for families.

6. HOW ACTIVE DO YOU NEED TO BE ON THE TOUR?

Each of our tours is labelled with an activity level from 1 to 4, so you can easily see how active you can expect to be on that trip. Most small group tours are designed to let you travel and explore at a leisurely pace.

Generally, we recommend being comfortable covering short distances on uneven ground, climbing steps and carrying your own luggage. Some tours include outings like an easy-going walk to a waterfall or a guided glacier hike. You’ll find any excursions like this listed in each trip’s activity level description.

If you’re not sure whether a trip is right for you, please  get in touch  with us for more information before booking.

7. WHAT MEALS ARE INCLUDED?

Breakfast is available each morning, so you can begin each day with plenty of energy. And, when you’re staying outside Reykjavík, some of your dinners are also included, depending on the tour. You can see exactly what meals are part of your tour package in the “what’s included” tab.

While Iceland is known for local delicacies like kæstur hákarl (fermented shark) and liquorice, it’s also a country of coffee lovers and ice cream enthusiasts. You can also expect a number of top gourmet restaurants, serving fresh, local cuisine, including seafood and lamb.

If you have special dietary needs, please let us know when you book so that we can make arrangements before you arrive.

8. WHAT SORT OF ROOMS WILL I BE STAYING IN?

The hotels and guesthouses that you’ll be staying in have been handpicked for their comfort, cleanliness and friendly atmosphere. Each has been visited by our travel experts, so when you check-in you can relax after a day of exploring.

Both double and twin rooms are normally available at our accommodation options. Please choose your preferred room type when you book so your travel consultant can make sure that everything is perfect for your trip.

If you’re booking onto a small group trip as a solo traveller, rest assured you will have your own private room. While not all tour providers would give you a room of your own in this case, at Nordic Visitor your comfort and privacy is our priority.

It’s also worth noting that our hotels and guesthouses do not offer triple rooms.

9. WHAT LUGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON A SMALL GROUP TOUR?

You can bring one suitcase or large bag per person for your overnight items. We also recommend bringing a daypack for daily essentials, like a camera, extra clothing and wallets.

Your luggage will travel with you on the minibus. We ask that you please take your bag to your new room on arrival and then back on to the minibus for the next day’s journey.

Figuring out what to bring with you, especially during different seasons, can be a challenge. Happily, you can refer to our handy Iceland packing guide for tips and advice on what you’ll need for your trip.

10. HOW MUCH LEG ROOM WILL I HAVE ON THE BUS?

Each of our buses has been chosen so that you can relax and travel between stops in comfort. You’ll find that none of our tour buses are over 3 years old. And, while our vehicles seat 19 people, we allow up to 16 guests onboard to ensure there’s plenty of space for everyone.

The standing height and seating room for most of our tour buses is just above 6’4” (193 cm). Happily, this means that even most of our taller guests can travel with ease. There will also be plenty of comfort breaks along the way where you can stretch your legs and get some fresh air.

11. DO YOU TIP YOUR TOUR GUIDE IN ICELAND?

Providing a gratuity is entirely up to you. In Iceland tipping is not generally expected. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

12. WHICH IS BEST TO VISIT ICELAND: A SELF-DRIVE OR GUIDED TOUR?

The answer to this really depends on how you’d like to see Iceland. If you’re looking for the ultimate hassle-free travel experience, then we recommend a guided small group tour of Iceland.

Joining a guided trip means that you can sit back as your local guide drives you around, shows you the sights and takes you to the best attractions. As you’ll be in expert hands, you can simply concentrate on taking photos, making memories and learning about the areas you visit.

We only work with reliable local partners and promise that your tour group will always be small. This way you receive the best and most personal service when you choose one of our group tours in Iceland.

As well as getting to know your fellow like-minded travellers, small group trips in Iceland give you free time to head out and explore in the evening. On some tours it’s also possible to add optional excursions to your vacation package.

All of this makes a small group tour ideal if you want to completely unwind while your guide takes the lead.

Guided trips are also perfect if you’re travelling to Iceland solo or if you don’t feel comfortable driving abroad. Find out more about the  best guided tours in Europe for solo travellers .

On the other hand, if you prefer to travel independently then we recommend one of our self-drive tours in Iceland .

On a road trip, you’ll still benefit from our insider knowledge of Iceland. We’ll make all of the arrangements for your tour before you travel, including your rental car, accommodation and any optional excursions.

If you like the sound of going at your own pace, but would prefer not to drive, then you should check out these privately guided tours of Iceland .

Read this guide to Iceland travel to learn more. Or perhaps you know you’d like to go on a guided small group trip, but aren’t sure of the destination yet. Why not check out these small group tours of Europe for more inspiration?

13. IS IT POSSIBLE TO ADD OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES AT A LATER DATE?

It’s possible to add excursions at a later date, if they’re at either side of your group tour itinerary.

Each of our packages comes with recommended optional activities for you to choose from. For example, you could go on a whale-watching tour from Reykjavík or treat yourself to a visit to the Blue Lagoon.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you’d like to add an optional excursion to your tour so that we can secure it for your trip.

If there’s an activity you’d like to do that isn’t listed as an extra on your tour, please get in touch with us.

14. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Of course, your trip can easily be extended by a day at either end of the guided tour. Adding extra nights in Reykjavík is a popular choice as it will allow you more time to explore the city and its surroundings independently.

You can choose to add extra nights to your package when booking online. If you decide you’d like additional nights at a later date, please contact your travel consultant as soon as possible.

15. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can choose the arrival date that’s best for you from the calendar listed online for each of our Iceland escorted tours. Packages operate with a maximum of 16 guests. You can find out how many spaces are left on each departure by looking at a tour’s start dates online.

If you have particular dates in mind, make sure to book sooner rather than later in case that departure fills up.

Summer small group tours have start dates from April to September. Please note that itineraries which venture to remote regions, including the Westfjords, have a shorter season.

On the other hand, opt for a magical winter trip to Iceland and choose from departures between September to March. At this time of year, you can chase the northern lights on the south coast or tour Iceland’s Ring Road when it’s quieter.

16. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

We advise that you check available flights for times and prices, but book your package first to secure it. Once your tour is confirmed by email, you can go ahead and purchase your flights.

If you have missed out on flights, please get in touch with us and we'll do our best to accommodate a change of dates.

17. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

Iceland is known for its changeable weather, so it’s best to be prepared for all conditions.

Whether you’re travelling in summer or winter, we recommend packing warm layers and waterproofs. That way, come rain or shine, you’ll be comfortable when you’re out and about soaking up Iceland’s natural beauty.

Your guided small group tour will take you to various iconic attractions where you can get out of the minibus to explore. At some of these locations, a short walk may be the best way to make the most of your visit. So, as well as weatherproof layers, be sure to bring sturdy walking boots or shoes.

If you’re visiting during winter, on a northern lights tour, you’ll need to wrap up warm as temperatures can drop below freezing. Whereas in the summer, milder weather means that you should bring sunscreen and some lighter layers.

If you’d like to visit any hot springs or geothermal pools, like the renowned Blue Lagoon, remember to bring swimwear and sandals.

Here is an all-season packing list for your guided tour of Iceland:

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel

Day 2 – Golden Circle & Friðheimar

Today your Icelandic adventure begins. Your driver-guide will meet you at your hotel, and take you on a tour of the iconic Golden Circle.

First, you’ll head to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During your visit, you’ll see the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where 2 continents are slowly pulling apart. Next up is Geysir geothermal area, where the active Stokkur geyser erupts into the air every 10 minutes or so. Then, you’ll continue to the legendary Gullfoss waterfall, which makes up the trio of natural attractions on this tour.

After exploring the Golden Circle, you’ll stop by the Friðheimar greenhouse and farm. Here, you can taste delicious, geothermally-grown tomatoes and visit the stables where you’ll meet friendly Icelandic horses.

Back at your accommodation, you and your fellow travelers will enjoy dinner with stunning views over the Ölfusá river (dinner is included).

Day 3 – South coast waterfalls & black sand beaches

This morning, you’ll learn about Iceland’s geology at the Lava Centre, an interactive volcano exhibition.

Afterwards, explore more of the south coast, where you’ll discover natural wonders around each bend. First up is Seljalandsfoss, a jaw-dropping waterfall you can walk behind. Then, prepare to be wowed by Skógafoss, another one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls, with a 60–meter (197–foot) drop.

Your next stop will be the Skógar Museum, where you’ll find a huge collection of historical artefacts, including a model turf-house village. Further on is the coastal village of Vík. Here, you’ll get to walk the iconic Reynisfjara black sand beach and see the Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar rock formations.

Spend the night in picturesque Kirkjubæjarklaustur, where you and your group will have a delicious dinner together (dinner is included).

Day 4 – Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon & Skaftafell

Today you'll make your way east to see some of Iceland’s most photogenic attractions. Your first stop is Skaftafell, a nature-lover’s paradise within the Vatnajökull National Park. Here, you’ll spend time soaking up the area’s epic landscapes.

Next, your guide will take you to the Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon and its more well-known neighbour, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. At Jökulsárlón, you’ll sail between shimmering icebergs on a guided boat tour.

Afterwards, tuck into homemade ice cream at a nearby local farm. This evening, enjoy a group dinner at your accommodation (dinner is included).

Day 5 – Scenic Eastfjords

On your drive through East Iceland, you’ll be treated to views of pretty fishing villages, stunning fjords, and dramatic landscapes. In Stöðvarfjörður, you’ll stop by Petra's Stone Collection, a private mineral and stone exhibition in a beautiful botanic garden.

At the end of the day, you’ll have dinner back at your hotel (dinner is included).

Day 6 – Lake Mývatn & Dettifoss waterfall

This morning your journey takes you north, with a stop at the mighty Dettifoss, Europe’s second most powerful waterfall.

Next up is the beautiful Lake Mývatn, which sits in the middle of a giant lava field. Here you’ll see volcanic craters, mud pools, and steam vents. Plus, you could check out nearby attractions such as the Dimmuborgir caves and Námaskarð hot springs. In summer, Lake Mývatn’s lush shores are home to dozens of bird species.

You’ll end the day with dinner at your accommodation (dinner is included).

Day 7 – Jökulsárgljúfur National Park & Mývatn Nature Baths

Your first stop today will be the coastal town of Húsavík, also known as Iceland’s whale-watching capital. At the local whale museum, you’ll find 11 whale skeletons on display.

Next is Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, home to the horseshoe-shaped Ásbyrgi canyon. Legend has it, this glacial canyon was formed by the hoof of Óðinn’s 8-legged flying horse, Sleipnir.

Later, you’ll get to unwind in the warm waters at Mývatn Nature Baths. This is the ultimate way to experience the area’s geothermal forces at play.

Come evening, enjoy dinner at the hotel with your group (dinner is included).

Day 8 – Goðafoss waterfall, Akureyri & Tröllaskagi

Kick off this morning with a visit to the stunning forked waterfall Goðafoss (‘Waterfall of the Gods’). You’ll then have some time to explore Akuyreri, the capital of North Iceland. The charming city center is dotted with historic buildings, cafés, restaurants, and shops.

Your next stop is Tröllaskagi (‘Troll Peninsula’), home to deep valleys, picturesque fjords, and Iceland’s tallest mountains. You’ll then make a stop at the Herring Era Museum, in the small fishing town of Siglufjörður. Taste local delicacies and learn about the town’s rich history of herring fishery.

Head to tonight’s accommodation, where you’ll have dinner with the group (dinner is included).

Day 9 – The wild Westfjords

Today get off the beaten track and explore the remote and rugged Westfjords. Your first stop is Hólmavík, an idyllic town famous for its history of witchcraft. You’ll learn all about the myths and local superstitions at the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft.

Enjoy the rest of the day in the fishing village of Drangsnes. Here, you can take a dip in the geothermal hot tubs along the shoreline.

Later, enjoy dinner at your hotel (dinner is included).

Day 10 – Northern Westfjords & Arctic birdlife

On today’s drive, you’ll be treated to views of towering mountains and epic fjords. Visit the rustic turf farmstead Litlibær, before heading to Ísafjörður, the unofficial capital of the Westfjords. This fishing town is known for its picturesque surroundings and historic wooden buildings.

From here, your group will take a boat tour to Vigur island, just south of the Arctic Circle. This is where you’ll find colonies of birds including Atlantic puffins, eider ducks, and Arctic terns. You’ll also be served refreshments by a local family.

Spend the rest of the evening exploring Ísafjörður and dining at your leisure.

Day 11 – Southern Westfjords & Dynjandi waterfall

Today, you’ll head to the remote village of Suðureyri and enjoy a guided food tour. Taste freshly caught fish from the North Atlantic and learn about how Icelanders live at the edge of the Arctic.

Next, follow in the footsteps of Vikings in Dýrafjörður. This fjord was the setting of an Icelandic saga, which featured the Viking-age hero Gisli Súrsson. Then, continue to Hrafnseyri. Here, you’ll visit a museum dedicated to Jón Sigurðsson, an important figure in Iceland’s fight for independence.

Before heading back, your guide will take you to the bridal veil Dynjandi waterfall. Tonight, dinner is at your leisure.

Day 12 – Puffin watching at Látrabjarg & Journey to Snæfellsnes

Start your day with a visit to Látrabjarg, Europe’s largest seabird cliffs. If you love puffins, this is the place to be. In summer, you’ll find some of the largest puffin colonies in the world, along with other seabirds.

Next, board the Baldur ferry and sail across Breiðafjörður Bay to Stykkishólmur village, on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. You’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the area’s natural highlights. One of these is Kirkjufell, one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland.

In the evening enjoy dinner at your hotel (dinner included). If you’re up for it, we recommend taking a walk along the coastline to soak up  the views.

FAQs about our guided group trips

How does a guided group tour work.

On this type of tour, you’ll travel around Iceland by bus with the same driver-guide for the length of your trip. Guided group tours are a great way to make like-minded friends, as you’ll spend time with the same travelers for your whole vacation.

You’ll get to stay in accommodation around the country, and some tours include a few evening meals too. After a day’s exploring, you’ll go back to your private room and meet your guide and group the next morning to continue your trip.

All of our guided group tours start and finish in Reykjavík.

How big will the group be on the tour?

There are 2 group sizes available:

  • Small group: Up to 16 people
  • Big group: Up to 36 people

Small groups offer a more intimate travel experience, whereas big groups are more wallet-friendly.

What will the other people in my group be like?

You’ll likely be with people from a whole mix of backgrounds, from different countries and of different ages. Your guide will entertain you with fun facts and jokes as you journey around Iceland. It’s almost guaranteed you’ll be laughing along with your group!

There will most probably be a mix of solo travelers, couples, and small groups of friends and family.

Is there a luggage size restriction on the bus?

The luggage restrictions on guided group tours 3 days and longer are as follows:

  • 1 suitcase or large bag per person for clothes and overnight items
  • 1 day bag for essential items, like a camera, extra clothes, and valuables

The luggage restrictions on guided group tours up to 3 days are as follows:

  • 1 small carry-on luggage, bag size: 50 x 30 x 60 cm (19.9 x 11.8 x 23.6 inches)
  • If you have large luggage with you, please check with your accommodation if they offer luggage storage while on this tour. If that is not a possibility, you can pay an extra fee per luggage (2000 ISK) with 72 hours notice.

Each day your luggage will be loaded onto the bus. In the evening, you’ll take all your bags with you to your room.

Can I customize a guided group tour?

Our guided group tours have fixed start dates and itineraries. While it’s not possible to customize the actual tour, you can tailor your trip with extra days and activities before or afterwards.

For example, you could add a couple more days in Reykjavík at the end of your trip. Fill these with day tours or exciting activities like ice caving and snowmobiling.

Day 2 - Golden Circle

See the classic highlights today, the Golden Circle Route. Start with a visit to a geothermal greenhouse and watch how Icelanders grow tomatoes. Next door, take a selfie with an Icelandic horse and learn about its unique qualities and history. You will explore Gullfoss, the beautiful double “Golden Falls”, and walk through the active geothermal area of Geysir, where Strokkur “the churn” spouts up to 25 meters (70 feet) every five to seven minutes. The next stop is the ancient Viking Parliament area and UNESCO world heritage site of Þingvellir National Park. The Þingvellir plain is situated on a tectonic plate boundary where North America and Europe are slowly tearing away from each other. As a result, the plain is scarred by dramatic fissures, ponds, and rivers, including the great rift Almannagjá.

Day 3 - Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Ferry trip to West Fjords

Today, you explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which juts out from Iceland’s West Coast. A rugged mountain chain runs its length, capped by the 1,446-meter Snæfellsjökull glacier, a mystical cone-shaped stratovolcano. Travel around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, through lava fields, and along the ocean with many excellent Icelandic photo opportunities. See the most popular sites at the Snæfellsnes National Park where volcanic craters, lava flows, an ice cap, glaciated peaks, fjords, sandy beaches, and high cliffs shape its landscapes.

Follow the adventure of Jules Verne’s classic science-fiction novel about “The Journey to the Center of the Earth”. Do not miss your chance to go on a trip to the interior of the earth under the glacier Snæfellsjökull! This lava cave tour takes you 35 meters underground and about 200 meters into the lava tube called Vatnshellir. In the afternoon, catch the car ferry Baldur from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur in the West Fjords. On the 2,5-hour journey over Breiðafjörður Bay, pass the island of Flatey, which is inhabited only during the summertime. If the weather is beautiful, you will enjoy a magnificent view of the bay’s countless isles as well as the glacier Snæfellsjökull.

Day 4 - Iceland's Westernmost Point

Follow the coastline and stop at the folk and transport museum in Hnjótur. Continue through a very remote and sparsely populated region to the bird cliffs of Látrabjarg, the most abundant seabird cliff and the westernmost point of Iceland and Europe where you can see puffins from mid-May till mid-August. Take a walk in the wilderness to the top of the highest bird cliff in Iceland. Látrabjarg is known in the world for its density of Nordic birds. Puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, cormorants, kittiwakes, and other cliff birds flock either in hundreds, thousands and even in millions.

Látrabjarg is a place where you can get very close to the seabirds, and even if you’re not into bird watching, you are entertained by the comic puffins and mesmerized by the sheer number of birds. If weather and road conditions allow, we travel to Rauðisandur beach with endless red sand. Well, not endless but 10 km is a lot. The magnificent hues of the sand differ with daylight, tides, and weather. This pure sand beach is home to countless seabirds and seals and is an oasis of unique tranquillity. Forget everything, except maybe getting the perfect shot of the ever-changing hues of yellow, orange and red.

Day 5 - Beautiful West Fjords

Travel over mountains and along the shore of scenic fjords until we reach the majestic fjord Arnarfjörður, surrounded by high mountains. At the bottom of the fjord, you will come across the unique waterfall Dynjandi with its seven levels of plunging water, declared the country’s most beautiful waterfall by the people of Iceland.

Continue over a mountain pass and along the southern shores of the West Fjords which is a route less travelled and is characterized by sheer cliffs, deep cut bays and narrow stretches of coastal lowland. The landscape is dominated by mountains, lakes, valleys, sea and wide-open spaces. Visit a local dairy farm at Erpsstaðir, including ice cream taste directly from farm.

Day 6 - Heading North

Today’s journey is a little bit 'off the beaten track', around the Vatnsnes peninsula. Pass the fishing village of Hvammstangi, also called the seal capital of Iceland. A gravel road takes you around the peninsula to Hvítserkur, a highlight on the east coast of the region; a mass of igneous rock, about 15 meters high, situated on the seashore. Fulmars and gulls live on Hvítserkur. An old story has it that Hvítserkur is a petrified troll that intended to stone a nearby cloister, but dawn arrived before he could succeed.

We continue to Kolugljúfur canyon, where waterfalls cascade into the deep, rugged gorge. It is a breathtaking sight to walk on the viewing platform and watch the calm waters of the river suddenly leap and tumble onwards over so many impressive falls – a sight which will leave no one unmoved. Further north we stop at Víðimýri to visit one of the few preserved turf churches in Iceland. The church was built in 1834 and has turf walls, but timber gables both back and front. Continue along a high mountain road to Akureyri, also called the capital of North Iceland, where you stay for two nights.

Day 7 - Northernmost Town

Enjoy breakfast in the beautiful surrounding of the botanical garden in Akureyri. Afterwards enjoy a whale watching tour for 2-3 hours in Eyjafjörður – Iceland’s longest fjord right below the Arctic Circle. For additional bonus and fun, try your luck at sea angling towards the end of the tour.

In the afternoon see the spectacular fjord landscapes while travelling to Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town, known as the herring capital of the North Atlantic. Siglufjörður is located on the mountainous Tröllaskagi Peninsula. On the way, we pass small fishing villages and stop at a deserted valley that even most Icelanders have not seen. Included is a visit to the Herring Era Museum in Siglufjörður, Iceland’s largest maritime museum and the only one in Iceland that won the European Museum Awards. We won’t miss the opportunity to taste the herring along with Brennivín, Icelandic schnapps.

Day 8 - Geological Wonders and Nature Baths

Today, explore Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, and continue to Lake Mývatn, known for its abundant bird life and amazing volcanic lava landscapes. See pseudo craters, walk in the mysterious lava field Dimmuborgir, see the tephra cone Hverfjall, explore the hot springs, fumaroles and bubbling mud pools of Námaskarð. You will travel to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park. The round-trip walk takes about 40-60 minutes.

Then continue east through the bare and sometimes deserted landscape with mountains all around and head through the uninhabited highlands to East Iceland. Explore the northernmost fjord on the East Fjord mountain range.

Day 9 - Eastfjords and Geothermal Bathing

It’s a day to admire the dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords. Our first stop will be at Vök baths, a floating geothermal pool in Lake Urriðavatn where guests can soak in hot water within and surrounded by the lake. Later we visit Petra’s fascinating rock collection. A naturalist and a collector are two terms that have been used to describe Petra since she was a little girl. Petra collected for nearly 80 years this unique treasure of rocks, crystals, zeolites, quartz and more, all from the nearby area in the East Fjords. Finally, in the afternoon, we see Vatnajökull, Europe’s biggest glacier visible all over Southeast Iceland.

Day 10 - Vatnajökull National Park, Glaciers & Glacier Lagoon

Today we visit Vatnajökull National Park, which covers about 14% of Iceland, making it Europe’s 2nd largest national park in terms of area. We stop for a boat ride amongst the floating icebergs on the magnificent Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, considered one of the highlights on tour around Iceland.

Next, we walk along the black sands of the so-called Diamond beach. Afterwards, we explore the region of Skaftafell, which is nestled below Iceland’s highest mountain and the second biggest stratovolcano in Europe, the 2.110-meter high Hvannadalshnúkur. We walk close to one of the many glacial tongues in the area – a true photo moment. Finally, we cross a sandy desert before reaching our overnight location, Vík, the southernmost village in Iceland.

Day 11 - Vatnajökull National Park & The South Coast

Today you will travel along the South Coast of Iceland, between the sea, rugged mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls. Explore the black lava beach, Reynisfjara, and bird cliffs before stopping at the Skógafoss waterfall, another must-see location in South Iceland. The crashing water creates a mist that results in frequent and magical rainbows, just adding some more memorable experiences to the sheer beauty of this stunning scenery and place. Afterwards, reach Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can follow a slick and wet trail and walk right behind it. Come prepared and bring a raincoat and good boots as you will get wet. New inclusion at Skógar folk museum is also included today.

Then visit the Lava & Volcano Exhibition Centre focused on geology and active volcanoes and watch a documentary film about volcanic eruptions in the past years in Iceland. Farewell dinner at a local restaurant in Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital.

Day 12 - Departure Day

Individual transfer by Flybus shuttle from your accommodation in Reykjavik to Keflavik airport. We suggest spending some time at the Blue Lagoon on your way out to the airport, ask us for advice.

From Reykjavík, you'll set off towards Iceland's three most famous attractions along the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Hot Springs, and Gullfoss Waterfall. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the great views and fascinating history at each stop.

We’ll also take special stops to explore the charming geothermal town of Hveragerði and the vibrant Kerið volcanic crater—experiences that many tours skip! After a day full of adventure and unique sights, we’ll drive you back to Reykjavík.

Hveragerði Geothermal Town

Your full-day Golden Circle tour begins with a convenient pick-up from one of our locations in Reykjavík. Just 40 minutes away, we’ll stop in the charming town of Hveragerði, renowned for its geothermal activity.

Steam rises from the surrounding hills, creating a unique landscape where the natural warmth allows locals to grow a variety of plants easily and affordably. Many residents even enjoy hot springs right in their backyards, thanks to the hot water beneath the town. This geothermal energy keeps the greenhouses thriving year-round, making Hveragerði the world’s northernmost location for growing bananas !

We’ll take a brief stop here to grab a quick bite at a local bakery before continuing our trip.

Kerið Crater Lake

Kerið crater, also called "The Eye of the World," is a stunning volcanic crater. It formed over 6,500 years ago after a volcanic eruption. The eruption caused the volcano to collapse, leaving behind a beautiful blue lake inside. The bright blue-green water against the red volcanic rock makes Kerið a must-see spot.

The crater is 886 feet (270 meters) wide and has steep walls up to 180 feet (55 meters) high. From the rim, you can enjoy amazing views of the landscape and distant mountains. You can also take a 20-minute hike around the lake for great photos. In summer, the red rocks contrast with green moss. In winter, the snow-covered slopes and frozen lake create a magical scene.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Next, we’ll visit the breathtaking Gullfoss, known as the "Golden Waterfall," located on the edge of the Icelandic Highlands. Cascading within the canyon of the Hvíta River and fed by the Langjökull glacier to the north, Gullfoss is a breathtaking spectacle.

This two-tiered waterfall appears to vanish into the depths below, with its waters plunging an impressive 105 feet (32 meters). It showcases nature's power and the raw beauty of Icelandic landscapes. No matter the season, Gullfoss always captivates with its stunning beauty, making it a must-see stop on our journey.

Geysir Geothermal Area

Next, we’ll visit the Geysir geothermal field, home to one of the world’s most famous geysers—the one that gave all geysers their name! Here, you can explore bubbling water pools, crystal-clear geothermal springs, and steam vents. Keep an eye out for the spectacular sight of a geyser erupting right in front of you.

While Geysir itself is now dormant, it once held the title of the tallest geyser ever, shooting water an impressive 400 feet (122 meters) into the sky. Don’t worry, though—Geysir’s little brother, Strokkur, is here to steal the show. As Iceland’s most active geyser , Strokkur erupts every 4 to 10 minutes, giving you plenty of chances to witness its magnificent displays.

Þingvellir National Park

Þingvellir National Park is an important place to enjoy nature and discover its history. As you enter this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll find yourself in a rift valley . This is a fascinating reminder of the Earth's ever-shifting crust. The dramatic landscape, shaped by the separation of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, tells a story millions of years in the making.

But Þingvellir isn't just about geology. Another option would be the Landmannalaugar Safari on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs. Most of our super jeep tours  are also suitable for children over the age of 6 years old. If you would like a nice and relaxing experience we would also recommend the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon tour .

The Kolviður Fund   is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.

Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. What can I say? It was fantastic the whole way through. We were picked up on time, the minibus was comfortable, our guide was fun and informative. She didn't just give us facts, she told us interesting stories about Icelandic culture.. In one day, we saw a volcano, a waterfall, a geyser and a national park. What a fun day! Loved this tour so much that we booked on to the south coast tour the day after.

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by JaneB89

Fascinating 8 hour tour of several beautiful Icelandic sights. This tour is a small group tour of no more than about 19 people. Some other tours have buses carrying 40 - 50 people. There were frequent stops, so you’re only driving for about 45 minutes at most between stops. Plenty of time provided to explore at each stop. Our guide was Baldwin, the best tour guide during our time in Iceland. He explained each sight we visited, and welcomed questions from the group. The experience was great. In the winter, dress warmly. Warm water-proof foot wear is a big plus. In winter, do not try to drive this tour route on your own. Go with a highly rated tour company for safety reasons

Wake Up Reykjavik Tour Review by Davidveld

The Golden Circle Day Tour was a great experience! Berglind was a very funny, knowledgeable and enthusiastic -but very safe and smooth- driver and tour guide. She showered us with interesting stories about the politics, history, and geology of the island.. But best of all were the stories of her and the people's life on the island. My trip to the island would not have been the same without this experience. Looking for a tour? Look no further!

Frequently Asked Questions

We also offer full refunds if you cancel your booking with more than 24 hours prior to your tour :)
  • Does this tour still work during winter with limited daylight? During the winter months in Iceland, we experience shorter daylight hours. However, this tour is remarkably well-timed. • How long are the stops on the tour? The stops on the Golden Circle tour range from 30 minutes up to an hour! We also have some stops along the way that are only to stretch our legs and go to the restrooms (they would last 15-20 minutes). Most stops are 45 minutes – 1 hour apart!
  • How many travellers are in each Golden Circle tour? The South Coast tour offers a personal and small group experience aboard a 19-seater minibus. Each tour accommodates a maximum of 19 guests, though the actual number of participants may be lower.

  • Do we stop for lunch on the tour? During tour we visit Friðheimar Tomato Farm where guess are able to enjoy lunch. Lunch or refreshments are not included in the tour price and you are of course more than welcome to bring snacks/food with you :)
  • Are there bathrooms stops during the tour? Yes! There are several restroom stops while being on the Golden Circle tour 😊

I chose to do the SMALL BUS TOUR. It was "perfect". Our guide was STEFAN on FRIDAY JANUARY 25, 2019. He was careful to manage our expectations during the drive outside of the city limits. He explained the SOLAR WIND and the conditions which cause Aurora to appear. He explained the variables which effect it.

He took us outside of the city limits to an area of a park with NO BIG BUS TOUR GROUPS. It felt very special. We waited outside for 45 minutes. Yes it was cold and YES we were all concerned we would not see any. One member of our tour was from NZealand and it was her THIRD night out which no Aurora the other 2 nights.

BUT AFTER 45 minutes AURORA APPEARED. It was glorious. Everyone's cameras failed - could not capture it - I loved being in the moment. THANKFULLLY Stefan our GUide had a tripod and an android phone with the right manual set-tings and he captured souvenir photos of each of us. THANK YOU STEFAN!!!!

Iceland’s a great place to bring the kids, with a heady mix of adventure, history and places to relax. In this article we’ll take a look at some of the country’s most family-friendly activities , including swimming pools, interactive museums and wildlife-spotting opportunities as well as the kinds of tours and activities that you can all enjoy together.

We’ll offer practical advice on how to prepare for a family holiday to Iceland, with tips on what to pack, how to cope with seasonal variations and suggestions for how you might adapt your travel plans to suit young children or teenagers.

Iceland With Kids – Activities You Can Do as a Family

Interactive museums that the children will love.

Iceland offers a variety of museums and attractions perfect for a family vacation. From quirky turf houses to museums dedicated to fascinating topics like witchcraft, marine life, and even unusual subjects like willies, there’s something to captivate every member of the family, young and old alike.

Interactive museums are surprisingly fun, so when researching things to do in Iceland for families don’t assume they’re all stuffy and boring collections comprising labelled exhibits in glass cases.

One museum that’s much more engaging is the Icelandic Museum of Rock and Roll , located close to Keflavik Airport. Budding musicians can sing karaoke and rock out on an electric guitar in the museum’s sound booth.

Another immersive experience is at Perlan in Reykjavik . State of the art technology brings Icelandic nature and geology to life, such as an augmented reality replica of Látrabjarg bird cliff, a walk-through artificial ice cave and an immersive Northern Lights show in the museum’s planetarium. Upstairs there’s even an ice-cream parlour. As educational activities go, it’s about as far removed from school as you can get.

While letting your children visit an erupting volcano might sound daunting, a captivating and educational show offers a thrilling alternative—without the safety concerns.

If you're in Reykjavik or Vik, the Lava Show is a must-see that will leave kids wide-eyed in amazement. Suitable for all ages, though best for those over four, it’s the only live lava show in the world. Here, real lava is heated to a staggering 1100°C, simulating the awe-inspiring power of a volcanic eruption.

The Whales of Iceland Museum in Reykjavik features life-sized models of 23 whale species, offering an immersive and educational experience for all ages. Interactive displays and multimedia exhibits provide insights into whale biology, behavior, and conservation. With highlights like the underwater sound experience and virtual reality encounters, it's a must-visit attraction that deepens appreciation for these majestic creatures.

Two of the top kid-friendly educational and entertaining exhibitions are Perlan, featuring a man-made ice cave and an immersive Aurora Borealis planetarium show, and the Lava Show, where you can witness live lava production in real-time.

Pools and Playgrounds

Going to the pool is part of everyday life in Iceland. Its abundant geothermal energy means that you can rely on the water being warm, even in winter. Many municipal pools have water slides and other fun things to keep the children amused. Some have kiddie pools and well-placed hot tubs for you to relax in while your kids splash around.

Kids’ playgrounds are also found in most larger towns. In summer, you’ll often see inflated bounce pads for younger children to bounce around on and let off steam, whiledesignated skate parks can be found in Reykjavik and Akureyri.

At Reykjavik’s Kringlan Mall , children aged between 3 and 9 can play at Adventureland, a small indoor playground, and children under 6 can play at a large indoor playground called Family Land .

Wildlife-Spotting Opportunities

One of the most special things about a family trip to Iceland is its wildlife. All the family, regardless of age, will be enchanted by the comic antics of Iceland’s puffins . Come between late April and mid August for the opportunity of a close-up encounter, though be aware if great skuas and Arctic terns are also nesting in the vicinity they’re not so well-behaved.

Whale watching tours are also great family-friendly activities; open to everyone over the age of one, you’ll all get excited if a humpback whale breaches or if a pod of dolphins swims alongside the boat.

And though not strictly speaking wildlife, Icelandic horses are also a delight, whether you see them by the roadside, visit a stable or, for those aged about 7 or over, go for a ride.

Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world, ranking consistently in the top 5 for its low crime rate and family-friendly atmosphere.

Group of riders on horseback in a scenic outdoor setting, wearing helmets and casual clothing, following a trail through tall grass.

Easy Walks & Adventurous Hikes

Iceland has more than its fair share of challenging hikes but the good news is that there are plenty of easy ones too. For instance, much of the Golden Circle is child-friendly.

At Þingvellir National Park , a manageable path leads from the car park to Öxarárfoss waterfall, squeezing between the steep sides of the Almannagjá gorge along the way. You can also manoeuvre a stroller around Geysir and to the viewing platforms at Gullfoss.

A popular stop on our South Coast tours , you’ll find another easy, flat trail leads to Seljalandsfoss from its car park; there’s a handrail beside the metal stairs that flank nearby Skógafoss if you want to climb up for the view.

Further east, it’s only a short walk between Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach but you can also move your rental vehicle to the other car park if you need to.

Iceland's mix of easy and accessible trails ensures that everyone, from families with young children to adventurous families with teenege kids, can enjoy its incredible natural wonders.

Just outside Reykjavík, you can explore Heiðmörk, a popular destination for local families, known for its striking red volcanic hills, dense forests, and a serene lake. This area is accessible year-round and perfect for a leisurely day out.

Guided Glacier hikes offer a perfect blend of education and adventure, making them an ideal experience for families with children over eight years old. These guided tours provide a unique opportunity to explore Iceland's majestic glaciers up close while learning about the fascinating geology, history, and environmental significance of these icy giants.

The adventure of walking on a glacier, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of blue ice, deep crevasses, and rugged terrain, creates an unforgettable experience that will captivate both children and adults alike. The hands-on nature of these tours, often including the use of crampons and ice axes, adds an element of excitement while ensuring safety under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Two people in colorful winter gear stand on a glacier with ice axes, surrounded by icy terrain and snowy mountains.

Other Family-Friendly Activities

Between late August and mid-April, a Northern Lights tour is a must so long as your children are old enough to cope with a late night – and probably the cold. If your family is active, then put a grin on your faces as you speed along a zipline ; the lower age limit is typically 8 or 9 years old.

You might consider letting them ride pillion on a snowmobile to experience what it’s like to travel over the surface of a glacier; similar age restrictions apply. Our Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel tour is open to anyone over the age of 3.

If you’re looking for something a little less adventurous, the sport of folf (frisbee golf) is easy to pick up and with courses all over the country it’s a great way to let off steam on your family vacation in Iceland.

Walking tours with fun themes such as Reykjavik’s cats are another way of spending quality time together.

How To Prepare for a Family Holiday to Iceland

Being well organised makes all the difference when travelling around Iceland with kids in tow. Here are a few ways you can prepare for a family trip.

What to pack

You won’t need to worry too much about smart clothes when coming to Iceland with kids as restaurants are pretty chilled about casual attire. Instead, think about how you’ll all stay warm and dry; even in summer the weather can be wet, cold and windy. Pack hats, scarves and gloves, plenty of layers and spare shoes in case a pair gets soaked.

Make sure you’ve got puzzles, colouring books and other games to keep the little ones happy. Electronics, including noise-cancelling headphones for when they’re streaming social media videos, music or television programmes, are likely to keep teens amused. Don’t forget the chargers.

How to cope with seasonal variations in weather and daylight

While in some respects an Iceland family vacation can be hindered by challenging weather, it can also bring unexpected bonuses – such seeing your children’s faces light up at the sight of snow far later in the year than they’d ever experience at home. As we’ve mentioned, bringing the right clothing is a must.

You can also work Iceland’s long summer days to your advantage as you can take lengthy breaks between your sightseeing stops and still have enough light to fit in everything you hoped to see. Bring eye masks or ask accommodation providers how effective their blinds and curtains are so your little ones don’t spoil the family’s enjoyment of a tour by being overtired.

Scenic view of Mývatn, Iceland, featuring a winding road, green fields, and mountains with snow-capped peaks in the background.

Keeping Teenagers Entertained

Iceland’s a safe country and outside the capital most towns and villages are quiet with relatively little traffic. Therefore, depending on how mature your teens are and their level of confidence, you might allow them some freedom to go to the local ice cream parlour, mall or cinema. Build in time where they can simply chill or hang out with their mates remotely, and make sure they have decent WiFi so they can stay connected.

Some of Iceland’s natural environments are dangerous even for adults, so when determining appropriate levels of supervision, don’t underestimate wild parts of the coast, hot water and scalding steam in areas of high geothermal activity, unfenced waterfalls and icy environments such as glaciers and ice caves.

Tips for Travelling with Young Children

On a family trip to Iceland it’s important to consider the needs of all members of the family. When it comes to travelling with young children that means being in tune with their usual routines as well as making sure they can handle any differences between the food they’ll encounter and what they’re used to back home.

It’s a good idea to have a flexible itinerary with a view to dropping certain activities if they’re too tired or not in the mood. Build in downtime so that they can let off steam at a jump pad, children’s playground or park. Compare the advantages of carting around their things in a rental car with the fun of being able to share the passing scenery on an organised tour.

A Note about Geothermal Pools

Some geothermal lagoons impose an age limit. For example, Sky Lagoon doesn’t welcome children under 12, while those between 12 and 14 must be accompanied by an adult. In contrast, Blue Lagoon allows children from the age of 2; those aged 7 or over must use a gender-appropriate changing room.

Meanwhile, Secret Lagoon and Laugarvatn Fontana, both popular add-ons to the Golden Circle, have no age-related restrictions at all. This is also the case with the country’s natural hot springs though at Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach a responsible person aged 15 or over must remain with any youngster under 10.

We offer so many activities you can do with your children on a family vacation to Iceland it would be impossible to fit all of them into a single holiday. Start working your way through those you’ll enjoy most on your first trip.
