3 ways to speed up slow Safari downloads

Soon after realizing my MacBook Pro battery life was greately extended by using Safari, I realized that the download speeds for Apple’s browser were really, really, really bad. So bad that I’ll open up Chrome (a MacBook battery hog) to download larger files and then close it once the download is complete. Or, in cases where I can easily copy the download URL, I’ll open up a terminal window and use the wget command for really speedy downloads.

I am convinced this dogged speed was by design–in order to keep battery usage to a minimum. Even with that bit of conspiracy theory in check, there are things you can do to help Safari speed up the downloads. Although these tips won’t have you seeing magical results (with Safari downloading as quickly as either Chrome or Firefox), you will see some improvement.

With that said, let’s get to the tips.

Clear that cache

This is the biggest culprit. Why? Unlike other browsers, Safari doesn’t handle it well when a cache becomes too large. It’s a rarity that Chrome or Firefox will trip up, due to cache. Safari, on the other hand, not so much.

So how do you clear the Safari cache? It’s really easy, so long as you don’t mind clearing out your history as well. What if you don’t want to delete them all, in one fell swoop? To do that, you have to jump through a hoop. Here’s how:

• Open Safari
• Click Safari | Preferences
• Click on the Advanced tab
• Click to enable Show Develop menu in menu bar ( Figure A )

Now that you’ve enabled the Develop menu, close the Preferences window and click Develop | Empty Caches. That’s it. Your cache has been cleared (without taking down your history as well).

Set static IP and DNS addresses

On any network you have control over (such as your home or company network), you can give your MacBook a boost by setting static IP addresses. To do this, follow these steps:

• Click on the Network icon in the top bar
• Click Open Network Preferences
• Select the network to be configured
• Click Advanced
• In the resulting window, click the TCP/IP tab
• Select Manually, from the Configure IPv4 drop-down
• Fill out the necessary information ( Figure B )

Once you’ve added the static address, click on the DNS tab, click on the + button ( Figure C ), and add a new DNS address. Do this such that you have a primary and secondary DNS address (such as Google’s DNS addresses 8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8).

Click OK and you’re done.

Reset Safari

What if you’ve been using Safari for quite some time and neither of the above tips makes any difference? It could be that Safari simply needs a reset. Unfortunately, the latest iterations of Apple’s browser saw the Reset Safari entry removed from the Safari menu and the only really dependable way to do this is via the command line. To do this, close Safari, open up the terminal window, and issue the following commands:

rm ~/Library/Cookies/* rm ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/* rm ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/* rm ~/Library/Safari/Downloads.plist rm ~/Library/Safari/Form\ Values rm ~/Library/Safari/History.plist rm ~/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk rm ~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist rm -rf ~/Library/Safari/LocalStorage rm ~/Library/Safari/TopSites.plist rm ~/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db

That should do it. Understand, this resets Safari to factory defaults, so you’ll lose all saved data and any configurations. But sometimes a reset is the only way to get Safari to behave. Use this only as a last-ditch effort.

It may be in vain

I still believe that Safari suffers from slower download (and upload, for that matter) speeds by design (to save precious battery). Because of this, you might find that all is in vain, that nothing you can do will speed Safari’s download speeds sufficiently. So when I’m not connected to power, Safari is my browser of choice. When I need to download or upload a larger file, I tend to head over to Chrome.

Best Download Manager Apps for iOS

When we first published this article, Safari on the iPhone and iPad lacked download management capabilities, and the only way to manage downloads was to use a third-party app for it.

But lately, Apple introduced native file management on the iPhone and iPad with the Files app in 2017. Two years later, Safari got its Download Manager, letting users store and manage downloads via the Files app on iPhone and iPad.

Over time, there have been improvements to the native download manager in Safari, which has made it one of the best download managers for the iPhone and iPad. But even so, there are a few things you need to set up to get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager.

This article will explore how to use Safari’s Download Manager to its full potential, as well as some third-party apps for download management on iPhone and iPad.

Note: The criteria for considering an app as a decent download manager for iOS still remains the same as before. The app should primarily be able to download all file types, display download speed, provide resume support for in-progress downloads, etc. It should also allow you to export the downloaded files to other apps, and provide basic support for opening common photo, audio, video & document formats.

Here, we’ll guide you to set up Safari on iOS and iPadOS, to get the most out of its Download Manager.

To get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager, it’s preferable to go through some basic setup.

The Downloads icon appears in the top-right corner within Safari, next to the address bar. But this icon is hidden by default unless a file is added to the download queue.

Now, you might have noticed that the icon automatically disappears after some time, even if you’ve downloaded files in the past.

If you need access to your download list items (Download History) at all times, there is an option you need to modify. The following steps will guide you to always show the Downloads icon in Safari.

• Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
• Scroll down and tap on Safari .
• Under the “General” section, tap on Downloads .
• Tap on Remove Download List Items , and select Manually .

While you’re here, you may also want to change the location for your downloads. By default, Safari saves your downloads in the Downloads folder within iCloud Drive.

If you frequently download files using Safari, that could consume unnecessary storage on iCloud, especially if you forget to delete temporary downloads. To avoid such a situation, it’s recommended that you change your Downloads location outside of iCloud Drive.

To do so, go to the Settings app, and navigate to Safari >> Downloads (under “General” section), and choose the On My iPhone/iPad option under the “Store Downloaded Files On” section, to save your downloads to the local Downloads folder. Alternatively, you may choose a custom location for your Downloads, by selecting “Other…” and choosing the appropriate folder.

Thereafter, when you download a file in Safari, it will be saved to your device in the selected location, and the same will be available in Safari’s Download List. And, as long as you don’t “Clear” the entire list, the Downloads icon should remain visible next to the address bar.

Note: To clear individual items from the Downloads list, go to Safari, tap on the Downloads icon, and instead of tapping on “Clear”, slide a specific item in the list from the right to reveal the Delete option, and then tap on Delete .

If you open a download link in Safari, there are two possible outcomes.

• You get a pop-up with the options to either “View” or “Download” the file, or both.
• The content or media behind the link directly opens in Safari.

In the first scenario, you can tap on the Download button in the pop-up, which starts downloading the file.

In the second scenario, the below section(s) will guide you to download such files.

Some files, such as PDF, MP4, etc., may directly open in Safari when you click on a download link instead of showing the Download prompt. To download these files in Safari, do the following:

• Open the web page containing the download link in Safari on the iPhone or iPad.
• Tap and hold the download link to pop out and reveal additional options.
• Scroll down through the associated options, and tap on Download Linked File .

The file will be added to the Downloads List (queue) in Safari and start downloading.

If opening a direct download link in Safari doesn’t provide the “Download” pop-up, or if the “Download Linked File” option doesn’t appear when you tap & hold an embedded link, here is what you can do to download these files using Safari.

• Open the link in Safari for iPhone or iPad.
• Tap on the Share icon from the bottom of the screen.
• Scroll and select the Save to Files option.
• Choose a preferred location to save the file, and tap on Save from the top right corner.

The file would be saved in the selected location.

Note: If the link is for an audio or video file, Safari will open it in its built-in media player. In this case, tap on the screen to reveal the player controls, and tap on the ‘X’ to close the player. Now you should be back in the Safari window, with the URL of the media available on the address bar. Proceed with Step #2 above to download the file.

If you want to download embedded videos or audio via Safari, you can use any suitable web media grabber, such as 9xBuddy , to parse the streaming link and get the direct download link to the source video or audio file.

Resume Support: In Safari, if you access the Downloads list (by clicking on the Download icon next to the address bar) while downloading a file, you can pause a download temporarily by tapping on the “X” next to the file, and it changes to the “Resume” icon. You can come back later and resume the download again (if the server supports it) by tapping on the “Resume” icon. The Downloads list also allows you to view the progress of current downloads.

Background Downloads: Once a download starts, you may switch to other apps and continue working. The download should continue in the background without interruption. In our experience, background downloads in Safari on iPhone and iPad work much more reliably compared to background downloads on third-party download managers.

Hence, Safari’s built-in download manager on iOS and iPadOS is now powerful enough to handle and manage different types of file downloads. But if you still want to explore other third-party online downloader apps, the below section explores a few of them.

Documents is one of the most popular file management apps on the iOS platform but also serves as a decent file downloader, especially because of its native support for a wide variety of file types both for viewing as well as for downloading. Being a full-fledged file management app, you can organize and store your files, and view them without having to export them to any other app.

Documents app provides additional features, including the option to add different connections (WebDAV, SFTP, SMB, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), rename the file, and set the download location at the time of file download, etc.

Total Downloader is a file and download manager for iOS that satisfies almost all of the criteria to be considered as a decent download manager. Its built-in browser supports universal search and can download any type of file format.

From a particular web page, you can tap on a download link, and choose between whether you want to Download or Open (Navigate) it. Unlike many other downloader apps which directly open the file on clicking on the download button, Total handles it smartly by letting you decide the subsequent action.

The Downloads tab in the Transfers screen lists all the active and inactive download tasks, which includes the current speed of the download, size of the download, and other details. Tapping on a particular download will allow you to Pause, Resume or Cancel the download. Completed downloads appear in the files tab, from where you can play or open the file, or export it to Photos (for photos and videos only) or other apps using the Open In option.

One of the most unique features of Total is its ability to grab embedded media links from specific streaming sites, like Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, etc. But to avoid legal issues, it explicitly disables the grabbing functionality from certain sites that primarily host original copyrighted content from artists/creators.

Total also has certain features of a file manager app. It supports the opening of common text, photo, audio, video, documents, and archive formats, also integrating a bunch of cloud services, including Dropbox Google Drive, OneDrive, and WebDAV services. Thus, you can directly sync the downloaded files with your preferred cloud service, and even stream media files from the cloud.

Some of the other notable features of Total include private browsing mode, bookmarks, and history management, user agent spoofing, PIN-protected folders, and much more.

The free version of Total is ad-supported. You can remove ads and upgrade to the pro version of the app with an in-app purchase of $4.99.

Files app (not to be confused with Apple’s app of the same name) is quite simple in its look and feel, yet powerful to handle any type of download link we throw at it. The app has four sections, a web browser, a download manager, a section for the downloaded files, and Settings. The built-in web browser provides specific settings for the default search engine, user agent (Mobile Safari or Firefox), and custom MIME types that define how the app handles different types of download links. You can either type a complete URL or use a search phrase on the browser’s unified search bar.

Files also have a Safari Bookmarklet, which allows you to transfer download links from the iOS Safari browser to the Files’ built-in browser, where you can download from the available links. Even if a particular file type is not supported for download, you can manually define how the app handles it, by adding it as a new MIME type. Alternatively, you can tap & hold the download link and select Download Linked File As option.

Note: If the download URL string is long, the action choices for tap & hold may not be visible fully, especially on small screen devices, such as the 4-inch iPhone. You need to scroll through the list of available options and select the preferred one instead. The Downloads tab shows all the active downloads, along with their download speed and progress. You can tap on the download and select Copy Address from the pop-up to get its source URL or tap on the stop/resume button next to the download to control the operation as preferred.

The app could also serve as a file manager, with a built-in document viewer for PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, HTML, and RTF file formats, ability to extract ZIP and RAR archives, photo viewer, and media player.

The app provides decent import and export options for exchanging files with other apps, and also with other devices, including AirDrop/Share menu, iTunes File Sharing, FTP transfer, etc.

The free version of Files provides for limited downloads and storage. To remove the limitation, you can upgrade to the Pro version via in-app purchase, for $4.99.

Being a native solution, Safari’s Download Manager provides the best overall experience when it comes to downloading files on your iPhone and iPad, especially with background downloads.

But as described above, a few of the third-party solutions offer some advanced features, such as automatic media grabbing, additional protocol integrations, better download management options, etc.

How to speed up Safari

Safari is one of the fastest browsers around, both on the desktop and mobile, but over time it can become a little clogged up. Keeping things ship-shape involves a touch of maintenance now and then, so here are a few tips to ensure that Safari stays as quick as it can be.

Safari on iOS

Reboot the app.

The easiest solution for an underperforming app is often to shut it down and load it back up again. To do this, double-click on the Home button to bring up the recently used apps menu.

iPhone X users have a different method, which involves swiping the little bar at the bottom of the screen upwards then holding onto it until the recently used apps appear.

Now swipe up on Safari to close it. Tap the Home button once more to get back to the Home screen, or swipe up from the bottom on the iPhone X, then launch Safari. If things go well, it should now be back to its former glory.

Clear the History

One quick thing to try if you find your iPhone or iPad are struggling with Safari is to clear the history. As you use the browser it stores information about sites it visits, and this can build up over time. A good clean now again can improve performance and speed things up.

To clear the history, open the Settings app then scroll down until you find Safari. Tap on this, scroll down again, and you should see Clear History and Website Data written in blue.

Tap this, and when you see the popup menu appear select Clear History and Data.

With this done, launch Safari again and hopefully the sluggishness will have disappeared.

Close all the open tabs

In theory, the open tabs shouldn’t affect things too much, as they are all kept in a suspended state when not selected. But, as is the way with electronic devices, sometimes closing them can return a happy surprise in terms of performance.

To shut down the old tabs, open Safari then tap and hold on the two squares in the bottom-right corner. A menu will appear, from which you should select Close All [X] Tabs.

Update to the latest version

Updating iOS is also another good idea, as Apple patches various problems that crop up in its apps, which could include anything that’s wrong with Safari.

Go to Settings > General > Software Update, and see if there is a download available for iOS. If there is, tap the Download and Install option at the bottom of the screen.

Safari on macOS

Clear the cache

Just like on iOS, Safari stores information about sites you’ve visited. While this can make things speedy to begin with, after a while the bulk of information can become a drag factor.

Clearing the cache is a quick and easy way to remove some of the clutter that could be causing the snail-like performance.

Open Safari on your Mac, go up to the menu bar at the top of the screen and click on Safari. From the drop-down menu select Preferences.

Make sure the Advanced tab is selected on the window that appears, then click on the Show Develop menu in menu bar tick-box.

At the top of the screen you should now see an option for Develop. Click this and then from the drop-down menu select Empty Caches.

Reboot Safari and see if this has had the desired effect.

Update your extensions

Safari allows a number of plug-in programs that can add functionality to the browser. These can be ad-blockers, privacy protection, password managers, or a number of other things. Of course, the more parts there are in a system, the more things to go wrong.

Checking that your Extensions are up to date is a good way to avoid any pace-sapping problems.

Open Safari, click on Safari in the menu bar at the top of the page, then click on Preferences.

In the window that appears, select the Extensions tab.

In the lefthand column, you’ll see a list of the Extensions you have installed, beneath which there will be a notification if you have any that require updating.

Click on the Updates notification and you’ll see all of the ones now available displayed in the main pane. Click the Update button beneath each one’s name and Safari will take care of the rest.

If this doesn’t solve the problem then you can try disabling each Extension one by one to see if there’s a rogue element hiding in your browser. To do this simply click the blue tick-box to the left of the Extension name in the lefthand column.

Update macOS

Just like the apps themselves, macOS needs to be kept up to date if things are to run smoothly. Open the App Store on your Mac and then click on the Updates tab in the menu along the top of the window.

If you see a listing for macOS (it’s usually down as Software Update) then click on the grey Update button on the right side of the screen. You may need to restart your Mac afterwards, but then hopefully Safari will be a free-flowing beast once more.

Clear up Safari cache and cookies

If any of the above solutions fail to fix your problem, you can reset Safari to factory defaults. Do note that resetting Safari will clear up all extensions and browser settings. So, consider it twice before doing it. Here's how:

Safari has experienced a major overhaul with the release of macOS Big Sur . Safari fans have a lot to look forward to, not just because of the new features, but also in terms of speed and performance as well.

According to Apple, the new Safari is going to be twice as fast as Google Chrome. If this is true, that’s a huge leap in speed. And since the browser is optimized for Mac, it is less power-hungry and can provide you with more browsing and streaming time.

But did you know that Safari is more than that? There are several tips and tricks you can apply to boost speed and performance of Safari.

Why Is Safari Slow?

Most of the time, Safari offers the fastest and most efficient browsing performance for Mac users because Apple puts a lot of resources into optimizing its performance and energy consumption. But there are times when Safari becomes extremely slow or not performing properly due to some reason. It can even be unresponsive even if you’re not doing intensive.

An outdated Safari also tends to be more prone to performance issues and slow speed. So if it’s been some time since you last updated your browser, you might need to check if there’s any update that you need to install.

Sometimes Safari can’t run properly if you have too many tabs open, you have a pile of cached files stored on your browser, or some extensions are not compatible with your browser.

How to Make Safari Browser Faster

If your Safari browser is crashing, freezing, or sluggish, you can tweak some settings to speed it up. Here’s how to speed up Safari in nine ways:

1. Restart and Install Updates.

A simple restarting of your computer can fix many computer troubles, including a slow Safari. It should always be the first thing you should try when troubleshooting such issues. Just click the Apple menu then choose Restart.

After your Mac boots up, check if you have any outstanding Safari app updates in App Store > Updates. You should also check if there are pending macOS updates.

2. Close Unnecessary Tabs.

Do you have more than 10 or 20 tabs open every time you use Safari? How many of those tabs do you actually need? All your tabs remain active in the background, even if you’re not really using them. The easiest way to speed up Safari to close all tabs that you don’t need. Or you can choose to restart Safari and get rid of all the open tabs. Press Command + Q or click the X button to quit Safari.

3. Delete the Safari Cache.

Just like other browsers, Safari also saves a cache of data from the websites you access. This is so that you don’t have to fetch this data the next time you visit. This cached data eats up disk space, contributing to performance problems. It’s always a good idea to clean up Safari regularly by emptying the cache. This is particularly useful in improving the browser’s performance.

To clear your Safari browser’s cache:

• Open Safari , then click Safari > Preferences from the top menu bar.
• Click on the Advanced tab, and tick off Show Develop menu.
• Close the Preferences window.
• Click Develop > Empty Caches from the top menu to delete all cache.

4. Remove Faulty Extensions.

Safari has a wide selection of useful extensions Mac users can install, but there are times when they do more harm than good. This is especially true for extensions that directly impact the browsing experience.

To isolate the misbehaving extension, disable all your extensions under Safari > Preferences > Extensions by unchecking the box next to it. Next, re-enable the extensions one by one to find the culprit. You don’t have to worry because disabling extensions this way doesn’t remove them. If you want to completely remove them, you need to click the Uninstall button.

5. Restrict Plug-Ins.

Apple has been trying to eliminate plug-ins from the Safari browser, but some might cause performance issues or slow down occasionally. This happens when you’re running an older version of Safari. Make sure to configure plug-ins to ask you before Safari loads them. The same is true for other security settings.

To review this, go to Safari > Preferences > Websites to check which websites have requested access to your Mac. Go through the list and disable access for the websites that don’t need it. Disable auto-play as much as necessary.

If you’re using an older version of Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Plug-In Settings and set the plug-ins to Ask before they start running.

6. Identify Faulty Websites.

Is there a particular website that causes Safari to slow to a crawl? Websites can cause your browser to crash if it has too many scripts, auto-playing ads, rogue extensions, and problematic embeds. This can bring, not just your Safari but your entire Mac, to a grinding halt.

To fix this problem, do the following:

• Open Activity Monitor under Applications > Utilities.
• In the CPU tab, arrange the processes by name and find Safari.
• Check the % CPU column and close your Safari tabs one by one to see which has the biggest effect on your CPU usage.
• Once you’ve found that tab, make sure to block that website to prevent Safari from visiting that URL again.

7. Make Sure You Have Enough Storage Space.

Low disk space can impact your Mac’s overall performance. It is more likely to freeze, stutter, slow down, and crash. Safari is often one of the first apps impacted by this problem, so it is one of the signs that you need to free up some space.

For best performance, keep a healthy buffer of at least 10GB or more of free space. If you’re out of space, you can use a Mac cleaner to remove junk files from your computer.

8. Fix Other Performance Issues.

Boosting your Mac’s overall system performance will also boost speed and performance of Safari. This is because your resources are not tied up in non-critical tasks, making them available for Safari. You can close all unnecessary apps running in the background or disable some of the login items that load during startup. Keeping your Mac running in perfect condition also improves your Safari’s performance.

How to Download Files Using Safari

There are different ways to save items from Safari to your Mac , depending on the type of item you want to save. While some items in webpages can’t be downloaded, files, images, software, and apps often come with a dedicated download button. Otherwise, Control-click or two-finger tap an item to save or download it.

It’s best not to download software or apps if they aren’t from a trusted source.

Where to Find Safari Downloads on a Mac

When we’re assessing the speed of a browser, we look at its ability to execute web applications and render visuals. Handling standard web applications is the most important criterion because that’s what the majority of web browsing activity consists of. However, we don’t overlook the more advanced, resource-heavy applications, either.

• Chrome — The overall fastest browser, and one of the most popular browsers
• Microsoft Edge — A close runner-up to Chrome, and Chrome’s equal in practice
• Opera — The third-fastest browser, but its speed is hampered by its abundance of features
• Brave — It’s not the fastest, but it is the most secure browser on this list, with built-in privacy and security features that don’t burden its great performance

How Did We Determine the Fastest Web Browsers?

Testing the speed of a browser is a delicate task because the browser’s speed must be parsed out from your internet connection’s speed. That’s why we use the suite of benchmark tests provided by BrowserBench. These three tests — Speedometer 2.0, JetStream 2 and Motion Mark — each analyze different aspects of your web browser .

We performed these tasks on an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini with 16GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-9500T CPU running at  2.21 GHz. It runs on the Windows 10, 20H2 operating system and contains an Intel UHD Graphics 630 graphics card.

It’s not always clear how much of your browser’s speed is influenced by your internet connection or the browser itself. That’s why we closed all other applications while we ran the tests over a stable connection. No other machines were connected to the network during the tests, so our speed results are as unadulterated as we could get them.

Speedometer 2.0

We place the greatest emphasis on Speedometer because its results illustrate the most comprehensive overview of your browser’s performance. It runs 480 standard JavaScript web applications and monitors how quickly your browser can handle each of them. The app averages the results indicating the total number of runs per minute the browser is capable of.

JetStream 2

The next test, JetStream 2, calculates advanced and uncommon web applications. Like Speedometer, JetStream makes the browser perform a series of web applications and delivers an averaged result. There wasn’t as wide a gap between the speed results of most browsers in this test as there was in Speedometer, so it made less of an impact on our browser ranking.

The third test, MotionMark, calculates your browser’s ability to quickly render advanced visual graphics in heavy loads.

Web Browser Speed Comparison: What Is the Fastest Browser?

Chrome and Edge were so close in each of our tests that they hardly differed from one another. The one test where Edge bested Chrome was in JetStream 2, where it got the upper hand by just a hair. In practice, they are equally fast and responsive browsers.

Brave, Opera and Vivaldi make up the remainder of our top five. Once again, their performance was so close that they went up and down the rankings by very small margins. The biggest differences emerged in the MotionMark test, where Brave was clearly the faster browser when rendering complex visual graphics, but they are all acceptably fast browsers in practice.

In the first and most important test, Chrome took the number one spot. Chrome does reliably well when handling JavaScript web applications, and Edge isn’t much worse. In third place came Opera, after a much wider gap, and Brave and Vivaldi were close enough to Opera to be indistinguishable.

Benchmark Test: JetStream 2

Edge was faster than Chrome for advanced JavaScript responsiveness in this test, but by a very slight margin. Meanwhile, Chromium raced ahead of Brave, Opera and Vivaldi while lagging behind in the other tests.

Tor Browser returned an “infinity” score for this benchmark test, which we can’t interpret. Opera Neon can’t process WebAssembly or JavaScript code, so it wouldn’t run on this JetStream2 test.

Benchmark Test: MotionMark

Chrome turned out to be the most graphics-capable browser in MotionMark, just slightly ahead of Edge once again.

Opera Neon unexpectedly seized third place, despite being one of the slowest browsers we’ve ever reviewed. It’s an impressive turn of events for Opera Neon, but we excluded it from the top five for its overall sluggishness.

Now with our overview out of the way, let’s take a closer look at each individual browser’s performance.

1. Google Chrome

• Easy to use
• Largest library of extensions
• Wide range of in-browser features
• Pretty fast
• Cross-device synchronization
• Serious privacy concerns

Chrome is the most popular internet browser (with an estimated global market share of around 60% ) in the world and, currently, the fastest. It took first place in all but one of our tests, and was very close to Edge where it fell into second place.

Without any extensions installed, Chrome responded well to a range of JavaScript applications and complex visual graphics. Some of the browsers in this list were better at some tasks rather than others, but Chrome delivers uniform results across the board.

Great Ease-of-Use

Simplicity is one of Chrome’s biggest strengths. Its easy-to-use interface played a big role in its popularity and is now the template for most contemporary browsers. Chrome is rather plain by itself, but you can add more features through the Chrome web store — the world’s largest library of extensions.

Chrome is a well-rounded browser in almost every way, especially in speed. We’ve never had a problem with Chrome running slowly except at the highest loads, so we can confidently recommend Chrome for its speed. Read our full Google Chrome review for more details.

2. Microsoft Edge

• Lots of features
• Compatible with most Chrome extensions
• Not the most private browser

In practice, Edge is every bit as fast as Chrome. It used to be much slower before it was redesigned with Chromium in 2020, but now it can process JavaScript web applications and render visuals with ease.

Built-in Features

Like Chrome, Edge is a simple browser that’s great for everyday web browsing. It has plenty of useful features built into the interface like device sync, an extensive context menu, and a handy “collections” tool. Compatibility with Chrome extensions is a nice plus as well.

If Chrome and Edge were tied for first place, that would make Opera the runner-up. There’s a bigger gap between the top two browsers and Opera than there are between Chrome and Edge, so it’s not in the same league when it comes to speed — at least on paper. In reality, there’s nothing noticeably slower about Opera, as it performs excellently with little to no latency. 

It took third place in Speedometer and fourth in JetStream 2, losing to Chromium. Although Chromium did better in this test, it’s an overall slower browser, so we think Opera deserves the third spot on this list. It fell much farther behind when rendering visual graphics, but because that’s not the most important criterion for good web browsing, we don’t place as much emphasis on that test.

No Extensions Necessary

Many browsers today, such as Chrome, are very basic on their own and rely on extensions to increase the browser’s functionality. Opera’s basic philosophy is to include enough features to make extensions less important, if not unnecessary altogether. It offers features like built-in social media and communication apps, device sync, a crypto wallet and much more.

Brave — our best browser for Mac — came behind Opera by such a small margin in Speedometer that they were virtually identical. Vivaldi’s performance was nearly equal to Brave and Opera in Speedometer, but came up noticeably short in speed when producing complex visuals in MotionMark. It was still a close race when it came to handling advanced web applications in JetStream.

A Browser for Power Users

Developed by the co-founder of Opera, Vivaldi was designed with Opera’s philosophy of a fully featured browser in mind. Vivaldi takes features and customization options even further than Opera and even includes performance-enhancing features such as hibernating tabs.

It’s not the fastest browser, and high RAM use is one of its major downsides. Fortunately, its hibernating tabs option evens out some of the flaws and can improve the browser’s overall speed and resource usage. Honorable Mentions: Not-Quite-So-Fast Browser Options

We tested many more browsers than the five you see above. The remainder of the browsers were obviously not as fast, but there were a few with other noteworthy traits that make up for their slower speeds.

Firefox was one of the faster browsers that didn’t make the cut. Its overall ability to process JavaScript-based web applications was acceptable in its speed, as measured by Speedometer.

However, it fell much farther behind when faced with advanced and uncommon applications, and with rendering complex visuals. It’s an excellent browser for basic tasks like daily browsing and email, but fails at more advanced tasks.

There’s still a lot to like about Firefox despite its moderate speeds. It’s a far more private browser than Chrome because Mozilla’s source of revenue isn’t derived from collecting the data of its users for advertising purposes. It’s also easy to use and has hundreds of useful add-ons in its extensions library, even though it’s not as large as Chrome’s collection. Read our full Firefox review for more information.

Chromium maintained sluggish speeds during two of our tests, but snagged third place in JetStream 2. Chromium and Chrome are almost exactly the same because Chromium is the open-source browser framework Chrome is based on.

Chromium is intended for use in browser development rather than for general consumer browsing, and is therefore very unstable. Be sure to read our Chromium vs Chrome to learn how the two browser foundations compare.

Its long load time sets it apart from Chrome, along with its incompatibility with Google accounts and device sync with other platforms, so there wouldn’t be much point in using Chromium except for development purposes. Final Thoughts: Fastest Browsers

It was a close race in this round of browser speed tests. Chrome and Edge were just about tied for first, but the victory ultimately goes to Chrome by a small margin. Brave, Opera and Vivaldi fought hard to win the runner-up positions and are just about equal in overall performance, but some of these browsers found their strengths where others were weak.

Chrome is the fastest internet browser we tested. Edge followed closely behind. Opera was a fast web browser as well, but slower than Edge.

On the whole, Chrome is the fastest web browser, but Edge marginally surpassed Chrome on one of the three benchmark tests.

Both are about the same, but Chrome wins in two of the three speed categories.

Wow, pretty pathetic scores overall. Was that because the Computer (doubtful, this is a browser test, should be easily performed by the computer). windows (maybe).

These are my scores on my M1 MBP for Safari on Ventura beta: Speedometer: 340, motionmark: 3063, Jetstream 221. Brave and chrome were close, Firefox less than half on Jetstream, Other browsers were about 40% of Safari on Motionmark, No other browser even topped 300 on speedometer. So probably windows then, way faster than your published results

it does depend on the computer. the point of browser tests is to push them to their limit. the same browser running on 2GB RAM with Celeron isn’t gonna perform as good when it’s run on a 32 GB RAM computer with the latest i9.

if you call these scores pathetic, go get chrome and do the same tests.

Is there a Mod version of Opera that’s faster than Chrome and Edge?

I did all of these tests on the latest Safari using an M1 Mac and it destroys all these results.

that’s because these scores are dependent on your machine. if you want accurate results, also redo the tests for the other browsers as well.

There’s NO way Chrome is the fastest. Web browsing grinds to a halt when I open Chrome. I always get over 900Mbps with both the command line tests, but speedtest.net in browser is always around 300Mbps. How do I fix the difference?

Safari and Orion actually blow these scores away. Try a comparison.

Measuring speed of browsing with the BrowserBench.org suite is inadequate IMO. I say this because it isn’t measuring actual browsing of the sites most people use. Even that can be misleading as the load at the time of their use can impact the presentation speed. I just ran the latest BrowserBench.org test suite (Speedometer 2.1, Jetstream 2.1, and Motion Mark 1.2) on the latest versions of SRWare Iron, Google Chrome, Vivaldi, AVG, Brave, Brave Beta, Brave Nightly, Opera, OmniWeb, iCab, Edge, Chromium, Safari, Avast, Firefox, Epic, LibreWolf, Waterfox, Tor, Mullvad, SeaMonkey, and Pale Moon and this order was the Speedometer 2.1 speed.

However, I do NOT think speed is paramount. I believe security and privacy are THE MOST IMPORTANT. The best test for Privacy and Tracking and Fingerprinting protection i have been able to find so far is EFF’s Cover Your Tracks. Anyone can use this. If you do you will find that ONLY ONE browser passes this on the MacOS Monterey 12.6.5… only one… the Brave browser.

This is why I invariably end up recommending the Brave browser after I test. Having said that i encourage every browser user to use EFF’s Cover Your Tracks tool to test your browser. The speed differences among the top 8 browsers are negligible in comparison to the privacy differences which are HUGE! Furthermore, I am not sure that Brave isn’t faster than all of them as it eliminates ads and trackers and saves a lot of time and angst in so doing not to mention the elimination of time lost following the ads.

Safari the best, blazing fast for loading and rendering page contents, like no other.

There is a browser called thorium which uses AVX2. On the speedometer test I got a score infinity. Maybe try this browser out next time you do these tests.

You should test out a Chromium based browser called Thorium. Specifically the AVX2 version.

On Speedometer it scored 241; on JetStream it scored 211; and on MotionMark it scored 2375.

The developer also makes a Firefox fork called Mercury which is a lot faster than stock firefox.

I feel like most browsers today are based off of Chromium which now is mostly developed by Google and some input from Microsoft. Some browsers focus a bit more on privacy then others. Chrome probably the least privacy focused browser by its default settings.

Step 2: From the top of the Mac Menu, Click on Safari > Select Settings .

Step 3: Open Advanced Tab > At the bottom, Enable the Show Features For Web Developers.

Step 4: Head over and click on Develop > Select Empty Caches .

Step 5: Again, Select Extensions > Disable Extension from the Left Sidebar > Click on Safari From the Top Menubar > Tap on Clear History.

Solution #9. NVRAM Restart (cmd+opt+P+R) – And it Solved

M1 Macbook Mac Safari Slow:

To Boost Laggy Safari browsing, There are no more changes in settings. To perform each of the steps in the same way. But Resetting RAM is quite Different on your M1 MBA[Air] or M1 Macbook Pro & M1 MacMini.

• M1 Silicon Mac stores data on RAM, and users don’t need to reset it. Because Mac reset it automatically while restarting your Mac. If you have to reset that, then simply restart the Mac .

Important : Mostly M1 Mac Users affected by Browser Extension installed on Mac, So I highly recommend Disable one by one and test the experiments. 

Solution # 10: Manually Clear Cache.DB file

The above solution must work properly, but if anything goes wrong or the cache isn’t deleted, try this one.

Step 1: Launch the Finder on your Mac > From the top Menu, Click Go and then Choose Go to Folder .

Step 2: Enter the below command and click on the Go button ,

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

• Now, as soon as the folder opens, click on the .db file and move to trash.

Note: Before performing this action, close the Safari app.

Solution # 11: Remove Safari Preferences File

Auto-generated list files in the Mac file system save massive browsing data; some of the data is useful and needed in the future. So I recommend deleting those files after backup in a separate folder. Follow the below steps to find the safari plist file under the Mac preferences folder.

Step 1: Launch the Finder and Tap on Go From the top Menubar > Next, Click on Go to Folder .

Step 3: Enter the Below Command.

Solution #12. Change Network Service also works to Speed up the internet on Mac

If you have connected your Mac to Wi-Fi and Ethernet, then it can be a reason behind the slow performance of Safari . Remove one network connection and observe if it has any effect on it.

By default, Mac will give priority to only one network. But if you want, then you can change the order of the priority and switch connections.

Here’s how you can change the priority of the network service

Step 1: Open the Apple logo and click on System Settings.

Step 2: Next, Choose Network and then open the Action pop-up menu > Tap to Set Service Order.

Step 3: Drag Service to Change Order > Click on OK.

Solution #14. Reverting back to Big Sur or Mojave as a Reliable solution

Solution # 16: Change the Login Account on Mac and repair the Disk

Another weird solution for this issue is to change the user account. Create a new account and try to use Safari to see if anything changes.

Besides, we will use Disk Utility to fix this issue.

Step 1: Search Disk Utility from the Spotlight.

Step 2: Once Disk Utility is on-screen, Tap on the Hard Drive of Mac > Click on the First Aid Tab .

Step 3: Tap to Run for First Aid on Hard Drive.

With Windows 7, Google was fast downloading. I have recently switched to an iMac and have been driven mad by the slowness downloading web pages – sometimes it sticks part way through and I get nothing. I switched to Bing – that was as slow. In desperation I tried DuckDuckGo. Pages are downloaded instantly. I have no idea why, but it work, so I’ll stick with it.

For your information, I have restored Safari normal speed on Catalina by deactivating my Intego Netbarrier suite

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Catalina a couple of weeks ago and all was good. Today I upgraded my MacAir and I basically can’t connect to the internet using the wifi that I used before to download Catalina and the same wifi that I am using on the Pro to find your website and to send this message. I tried deleting the cache and reopening Safari and restarting but still nada.

What’s up with that?

Great but have recommendation

I am really enjoying the functionality of the extension. I use this as a medical student to more quickly navigate through lectures. One additional feature that would make this perfect for me would be menu commands to make universal keyboard shortcuts. An example this could be used is during recorded lectures and taking notes. If i miss a particular portion of the lecture audio and I need to skip backwards to get it, without exiting the note taking application, I would be able to do that. I cant tell you how much I am going in and out of applications when I just want to have a global shortcut for pause/play, skip forward and skip backward. Maybe Accelerate can do this and I just missed it. Great applicaiton none the less!

Its good for being one of the only fast forwards for safari

Im still a little confused sometimes on how to use it but the creator sent me to an faq page that helped me out. Im getting used to it, but it could still be a little clearer with instrcutions. though, it does what its supposed to do so it should get 5 stars. I also still dont like that it wans you that it could be steaking passwords, but the creator also explained that, and i guess ill just have to trust him if i want to watch netflix faster lol

MacOS ver.: VGood, iOS ver.: Default Settings only

Again, great implementation on MacOS, but since I started using the iDevice variant, a) every input setting on the General app tab refuses to acknowledge changes to the playback speed multipliers or increment; on the Shortcuts app tab b) every created shortcut ignores user input and reverts to DEFAULT settings, and c) every Standard shortcut that is edited either resists editing entirely or replaces the Standard shortcut with the Default values from a newly created shortcut (in order to preserve the Standard shortcuts, the app must be clean re-installed). If the speed notification corner or the Keyboard shorts in the Standard shortcuts were in conflict with our workflow, I'd have to find another solution. Thankfully, the Standard shortcuts and General settings are tolerable. thx
