Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

Traveling to Italy in September 2023 – All You Need to Know

After the craze of the August crowds and high temperatures, Italy in September gives a well-deserved relief. September is a transition month and as the days go by towards the end of the summer to the beginning of the fall, also the weather gently becomes more bearable.

In a nutshell, September in Italy has the perks of the summer but with better weather and more restaurants open since also the Italian owners are likely to be back from the holidays.

My easy guide aims to make it easier for travelers to plan their trip to Italy in September, to know beforehand what to expect, and to pack wisely.

Table of Contents

Is September a good month to go to Italy?

September is a great month to visit Italy because the weather is not as hot as the previous months and the crowds start to disperse.

Italians, too, are back from the summer holidays so the cities and towns are gradually getting back to the normal routine. This means that more restaurants and businesses are open.

Is Italy too crowded in September?

September in Italy is less crowded than in August but there are still many tourists and the most famous landmarks will still be quite busy.

The beach destinations, too, will still see quite a few tourists but nowhere near the summer months, so your experience will definitely be more relaxed.

Weather in September in Italy

Even though the first rainfalls of the new season start as early as mid-August, the weather in September holds quite steady. With little to no rain and mild temperatures, September is one of the best months to plan a trip to Italy .

The hottest places in Italy in September are the southern regions and the islands. Places like Sardinia, Sicily, and Puglia are famous for their coastline and the weather is totally beach-friendly

What to do in September in Italy

Explore the cities.

The Italian cities are always a great destination to explore on foot. Whether you are visiting big cities or smaller towns, there will always be a beautiful piazza to admire and chill out in where you can sip on a coffee surrounded by notable palaces.

September in Italy is the perfect month to enjoy city life, the myriad of museums and landmarks, the coolest bars and restaurants, and the local events.

Go to the beach

The summer is nearing the end, but Italy in September still allows for some great beach time. Especially if you are traveling in the first half of the month, the weather will be likely still summer-like, and doing some swimming will feel very refreshing.

Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, even the beaches near Rome and the northern Adriatic coast such as Rimini and Riccione will still have their sea resorts fully operative.

From the high peaks of the Dolomites of Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige to the incredible scenery of Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont, to the hiking routes of Sardinia and around the Amalfi Coast, September is one of the best months in Italy for adventures in nature.

Literally all the Italian regions offer great hiking paths and routes. While in winter you might find some closed, the beginning of the fall is the right season to stay out in nature.

Explore Italian gardens

From north to south, there are many Italian parks and gardens that are best enjoyed in the warm season but it’s always better not too hot because they are all open-air.

Some cool parks to include in your itinerary are the wonderful Trauttmansdorff Gardens in Merano, Il Giardino della Ninfa in Cisterna di Latina in the Lazio region and Parco Giardino Sigurtà in Valeggio sul Mincio in Veneto.

Among the urban parks, we obviously can’t miss the gorgeous Villa Borghese in Rome and Giardino di Boboli, one of Florence’s top landmarks .

Best places to visit in Italy in September

Rome is a fantastic destination to visit in September . The weather is not too hot anymore but not cold yet. The days as well as the evenings are balmy and offer fantastic light for photographers.

When the unforgiving summer heat starts fading away, walking around Rome’s city center becomes much more pleasant.

September is when you can plan a day out in nature and a visit to the archaeological sites around the Colosseum , which are all open-air and quite hard to enjoy if it’s too hot.

The other major draw of Italian tourism, also Florence can reach very high temperatures in summer but in September the weather becomes way more bearable.

Florence’s city center is very walkable so when the weather allows, on foot is the best way to enjoy it. From famous landmarks like the complex of Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral to the Tuscan countryside, if you are planning your trip to Italy in September, Florence is a great addition.

Among the other places, you can take some great day trips from Florence such as to Pisa , Lucca, Siena , San Gimignano, and the Chianti region.

If you have limited time and are still unsure where to go, check out our insightful Rome vs. Florence guide.

Could we just skip Venice? I didn’t think so. One of the major hits among the favorite tourist destinations, if you are visiting Italy in September, Venice is a must whenever there is the prospect of fewer crowds.

Still warm but not too much and without the constant warning of imminent floods, you can enjoy long walks to admire the beauty and architecture of this one-of-a-kind city.

Trentino-Alto Adige and the Dolomites

Summer is one of the highest tourist seasons in Trentino-Alto Adige so in September there are fewer crowds. Whether you are into city life or soaking in nature, this region offers something for everyone.

Cities like Trento , Bolzano , and Merano are vibrant historical and cultural hubs, while for hiking and trekking enthusiasts, from wherever you are, mountains and Dolomites peaks and slopes will never be too far to reach.

The countryside and smaller towns also offer cool landmarks to explore. Make sure you book yourself for an adventure to the scenic San Romedio sanctuary and a trip to discover the local nobility in Castel Thun .

L’Aquila and Abruzzo’s Gran Sasso mountain range

The Abruzzo region is becoming always more popular among trekking fans. The Gran Sasso National Park offers beautiful views and great opportunities for more and less experienced hikers.

Obviously, if your September Italy trip takes you to Abruzzo, make sure you don’t skip L’Aquila , the region’s lovely capital, and smaller towns like Sulmona, Chieti, Tagliacozzo, Rocca San Giovanni, and Città Sant’Angelo near Pescara.

From the Valley of the Temples near Agrigento to the decadent Baroque architecture of Catania to the gorgeous capital of Palermo, Sicily is an utterly fascinating Italian region to visit all year round.

Being the southernmost region, expect extreme heat in summer. September is still quite hot but the fewer crowds make it a better time to enjoy the local beaches.

The temperatures, however, hardly reach the high levels of July and August, so exploring cities, towns, and archaeological sites on foot will be less difficult.

Here are some experiences you can enjoy in Sicily in September:

Catania: Mount Etna Morning or Sunset Day Trip with Tasting

From Taormina: Sunset Coastline Boat Tour & Dolphin Watching

Palermo: Small Group Night Street Food Tour

Sicilian Cooking Class with Vucciria Market Tour in Palermo

Italian Cooking Class with “Rionale” Market Tour in Taormina

September is the perfect month to plan a Sardinia holiday . The weather is warm enough to enjoy the perfect Sardinian beach and even swim, and August beach crowds are a far memory.

Why do I like September in Sardinia so much? Because I’m a huge fan of discovering local cultures and traditions, and when the weather is too hot, I simply can’t go around while melting in my sweat.

So fall and spring are the seasons to explore the fascinating towns of Sardinian inland , along with the local cuisine and customs. With such lovely weather, you will find it much more pleasant to join outdoor activities such as hiking Su Gorropu canyon , one of Europe’s deepest, and discovering Sardinia’s archaeological sites .

Amalfi Coast

Most hospitality activities and structures in the Amalfi Coast shut down after the summer, but in September they are still up and running.

Like all the other famous Italian beach destinations, you will find the towns of the Amalfi Coast much quieter than in July and August. This leads to more pleasant walks, a greater desire to explore, and a more enjoyable time swimming and sunbathing.

There are so many Capri boat tours and different experiences you can join on the Amalfi Coast for an unforgettable trip. Here are some of the things you can do:

Boat and Snorkeling Tour with a Captain

From Sorrento: Amalfi and Positano Full-Day Trip by Boat

Capri Coast to Coast with Blue Grotto

From Sorrento: Path of the Gods Hike

Amalfi: Cooking Class and Farmhouse Visit With Meal

Horseback Riding + Lemon Grove Tour on the Amalfi Coast

Hands-on Extensive Pasta Making Class on the Amalfi Coast

Lemon Grove Tour & Pasta Making Class on the Amalfi Coast

Horseback Riding Tour + Pasta Making Class on the Amalfi Coast

Trek ‘n’ Cook with Satva and Enrico near Amalfi

Cinque Terre

Hiking around the famous Cinque Terre , the five quaint villages of the Italian Riviera in La Spezia coastline is easily one of the highlights of your trip to Italy in September.

Apart from the well-known towns, with a short train or bus ride, you can reach beautiful places like the scenic Portovenere, Lerici, Levanto, and even the bigger cities of La Spezia and Genoa. Read our Genoa guide to see what are the highlights of the vibrant region’s capital.

If you are spending September in Italy, I think you shouldn’t miss a trip to Bologna “La Dotta” (the Erudite).

After the stifling hot weather and before the great fog, I suggest you enjoy the elegant architecture of this rich city, its porticoes all over the city center, and obviously, the hearty cuisine the region is so famous for.

There are easy high-speed train connections with both Rome and Florence and you can easily spend only one day in Bologna if you are short in time.

The good thing about traveling to Italy in September is that cities where the temperatures become drastic in summer or winter, in the middle seasons or transition months, they are great destinations.

I’m sure you will love to visit Turin because this royal city is best enjoyed on foot and September offers just the perfect weather to do that.

Visit the many royal palaces and mansions, get lost in the beautiful Turin’s piazzas, duck into the majestic churches, and don’t forget to enjoy the fantastic chocolate, the city’s culinary pride.

Perugia and the Umbria region

The Umbria region is dreamy all year round, but spring and fall are the perfect seasons to visit. Its capital, Perugia, is a beautiful medieval town to be explored while other major draws include Assisi for religious tourism and Cascate della Marmora waterfalls in Terni, which are also an easy day trip from Rome .

The Umbria region is a beguiling mix of nature and quaint towns, so September is perfect for long walks around the wild countryside, discovering the soft rolling hills the area is so famous for, the beautiful vegetation, and quiet towns.

>> Check out this handy guide to find the best luxury hotels wherever you are.

What to eat in Italy in September

  • Zucchini and eggplants. Summer is not entirely over yet, so seasonal veggies are still very much present in both local markets and restaurants.
  • Mushrooms. Porcini, honey mushrooms, and oyster mushrooms are all starting to be more frequent on the Italian tables.
  • Pumpkin. In some colder northern regions, you might already find the pumpkin so enjoy the delicacies they make using it, including some heartwarming soups.
  • Cavolo nero. Especially if you are traveling to Tuscany, I’m sure you will already find some ribollita soup on the local menus, where the star is the black cabbage typical from this region. On late summer’s chill nights, this is a perfect dinner.

What to pack for Italy in September

  • Sunglasses. A must from spring through fall in Italy, and sometimes even in winter!
  • Umbrella. Italy in September can give some unexpected rainy days so having an umbrella within easy reach will soften the surprise effect.
  • Hiking poles. If you are into outdoors and sporty holidays, don’t forget your hiking poles because September in Italy allows for very long walks!
  • Backpack/sling bag. For day trips in nature, a backpack is probably best, while for the city, a sling bag is a better option since in many landmarks large bags are not allowed.
  • Travel bottle. Carry a travel bottle to refill with drinkable water wherever you are. In many cities you will find public fountains, otherwise, you can always refill it in your hotel before leaving in the morning. Remember that tap water in Italy is always safe to drink unless otherwise mentioned.

What to wear in September in Italy

  • T-shirts. The beginning of September is still summer and warm so T-shirts will still be the most common upper garment. They are, however, very handy for the whole month, maybe underneath a jumper or a jacket.
  • Cotton/linen trousers. Casual for the day and fancier for the evening, these are a true passe-partout.
  • Blouses. Blouses for women and buttoned-down shirts for men are the best option for day and night, alone or under the jacket. There are a million types and styles so you can pack some casual and some more elegant for different occasions.
  • Jumper. A light jumper is handy to carry in your backpack in case the forecast predicts unstable weather.
  • Walking shoes. Whether you are in the city or hiking on top of a hill, walking shoes are always a must in Italy.
  • Sandals. Particularly towards the beginning of the month, you are likely to use open sandals. You can opt for walking sandals or some fancy ones
  • Spring jacket. You can always find chillier nights, so a lightweight jacket will save you the evening.
  • Shawl. I always carry a light shawl to protect me from the breeze and humidity.

Just returned from the Vesuvious tour from 28 Aug to 6 Sep.  What a wonderful experience! Would consider another Perillo tour for sure! The key to the great experience I had on this tour was largely through the efforts of your tour coordinator, Rosella.

Mr. & Mrs. J. A.

I just wanted to say – thank you to you and the Perillo staff for arranging such a perfect Tour for me and my husband.  This was just wonderful-I have been bragging to my friends and family how great the Perillo family took care of us.

Italy in September: all you need to know to plan a perfect trip

Visiting Italy in September: all you need to know to plan a trip! The best places to visit in September in Italy, when to book what, what to expect from the weather.

September in Italy is the last month of the summer and a fantastic time to visit.

The scorching temperatures of July and August start to subside, but the weather is still beautiful enough to allow for long days out, excellent sightseeing and outdoor pursuits.

Since September in Italy is a transition month between the summer and the fall, you can expect the weather to slowly get chillier and wetter as the month progresses; however, you are still likely to get many beautiful days.

Locals start to return to work in September and this means holiday destinations tend to be less crowded, especially in the second part of the month, when schools resume.

You will also see the number of tourists getting lower as time goes.

However, September is still a very popular month for tourism – especially if visiting Italy during the first two weekends in September, book all you can in advance, especially accommodation.

I adore spending September in Italy. It offers all the beauty of the summer without the oppressive heat and I love that you can visit pretty much everywhere at this time without having to worry too much about the weather.

This is our guide to help you plan your trip to Italy in September.

Please note : Please note :  this is a seasonal travel guide about Italy in September, meant to help you decide the best time of the year for your visit. For official information and travel advisory that may affect your trip, please refer to your Government travel advisory. The weather in Italy in September: what to expect

September in Italy is the month when summer starts turning into fall.

Overall, September tends to see beautiful, sunny weather in most of the Italian peninsula, mixed with rainy days and a slow yet steady lowering of the temperatures, especially in the north and the mountains.

The first two weeks in September tend to be summery, while the second half of the month is likely to bring chillier days that may require an extra layer, albeit a light one.

Light summer clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses are a must, and so are sandals, especially in the South and the first part of the month.

A light cardigan, summer sneakers for walking are recommended, and a light jacket and warmer layer are a must for the mountains.

You can find my complete packing list for Italy here.

At a glance, the weather in Italy in September is:

Can I swim in Italy in September?

You can swim in Italy in early September, especially in the South and the islands.

The latter part of the month is more hit and miss, not just in terms of weather but also water conditions.

If planning on swimming in the open sea, make sure you abide by local signs about currents and weather events.

The best places to visit in Italy in September

September is a wonderful month in most of Italy, so if you are lucky enough to visit Italy at this time, you can pretty much have your pick and go wherever takes your fancy!

Some of the best places to visit in September in Italy are:

Italy’s Main cities

September is a fantastic time to visit Italy’s main cities.

Milder temperatures mean you can easily enjoy urban areas, often too oppressive during July and August and you can easily mix and match time in museums with al fresco dining, which is delightful at this time.

You can find our city travel guides below:

Rome – September is one of the best months to visit Rome.

The city is perfect at this time: summer events are still in full swing, mild temperatures allow for great sightseeing and local and tourism services are all fully operational after the summer break.

You can find here >>> overview of the best things to do in Rome to get inspired or you can learn more specifically what to expect in Rome in September in our >>> our guide to Rome in September here .

Florence – find our guide to the best things to do in Florence here Venice – Find our recommended Venice itinerary here. Milan – Find our guide to a perfect day in Milan here. Genova – a fantastic city stop to add to your Cinque Terre itinerary (see below) Palermo – gem of Sicily, one of the most beautiful cities in Italy Naples – often overlooked yet a beautiful, interesting and fascinating city

The Italian lakes

September is also a great month to visit the Italian lakes.

lake como with coastal village

Lake Garda and Lake Como are lovely at this time and they offer respite from the city heat and they are just the two most famous!

Visiting lakes in September means being able to go boating, sunbathing, possibly swimming (it depends where you go).

Just be careful if visiting at weekends as they are popular day trips from cities and tend to get very busy.

Find here >> our guide to lakes in Northern Italy we believe you will love

Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in September

September is a lovely time to visit the Amalfi Coast however, rain is frequent so you want to plan for the occasional wet day.

Still very much a summer month, especially during the first half, September on the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento is still busy but not quite as crowded as during July and August and not as unbearably hot.

Minori Amalfi Coast Italy

During the first part of the month, you can easily enjoy boat trips and cruises to the nearby islands and all of September is great for sightseeing and day trips to historical sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, too hot in the height of summer.

The second part of September is when things start to wind down in this area: you will still have hotels and restaurants open however, the number of ferries to the islands starts to drop, making connections less flexible.

If visiting the Amalfi Coast in September, Sorrento is a great choice as your base: the town has plenty to offer in its own right so even if you get a rainy day or end up not being able to go to the islands, you can have a wonderful time.

This is our guide to planning a stay on the Amalfi Coast .

Fun things to do on the Amalfi Coast in September include:

  • Taste of Sorrento food tour – a fantastic way to enjoy the city and its delicious culinary tradition
  • Sorrento to Capri boat tour – one of the best ways to enjoy the coast from the perfect vantage point: the sea!
  • Discover Capri (find our guide to Capri here), one of the most beautiful and glamorous islands in Italy
  • Explore pretty Procida , a romantic island with pretty houses and a local feel
  • Spend a day exploring Pompeii with an expert guide
  • Discover the archaeological site of Paestum and its incredible temples.

Cinque Terre in September

September is a good month to visit Cinque Terre.

However, rain is frequent and, at this time, it can be torrential, so it is essential to keep an eye on the weather forecast and make alternative plans, should hiking and the beach not be an option.

View of Manarola town in Cinque Terre

When planning your September trip to Cinque Terre, I recommend you look at hiking trails, ferries and cruises to see the coastline from the water .

I also recommend looking at Genoa as a good location for rainy days.

Make sure you book in advance as there is no such a thing as a quiet time here, and September tends to be busy!

Find our Cinque Terre guides at the following links:

  • An introduction to the towns of Cinque Terre
  • Cinque Terre packing list
  • Visiting Cinque Terre with kids
  • All you can see with one day in Genoa

Tuscany in September

Tuscany is terrific in September.

The early part of the month is still good for some time on Tuscany beaches and the mild temperatures mean sightseeing in cities and town is a delight.

Town of Bagno Vignoni with houses overlooking a central pond of thermal water

As harvest season approaches, the Tuscany countryside comes into its own. Read here >>> why I love Tuscany in the fall .

September is a perfect time to spend a weekend in agriturismo , cycle around and taste the local produce, plentiful at this time.

September is also a lovely time to experience the wonderful hot springs of Tuscany , famous for their properties and their fabulous settings.

We adore Tuscany and have many travel guides for you:

• Tuscany villages – an overview of our favorite places in Tuscany and tips for visiting • Florence – fantastic at this time, when the weather is still pleasant, and museums can offer refuge from the occasional bout of rain • Val d’Orcia – an area of Tuscany of natural beauty so unique, it is now Unesco World Heritage Site • San Gimignano – delightful medieval town and Unesco World Heritage Site • Siena – One of the most beautiful small towns in Italy, with a breathtaking historical town center • Lucca – a pretty town with a lovely center and the option to cycle along its medieval walls

Northern Lazio and Umbria

September is also a fantastic time to visit Northern Lazio and Umbria, areas often overlooked by international tourism but rich in culture and beautiful natural landscapes.

Boy walking on the footbridge towards Civita di Bagnoreregio, Italy

Places that are worth a visit are the wonderful Umbrian town of Spello, Gubbio and Citta di Castello and Orvieto , just to name some of the best known.

In Lazio, not to be missed is Tuscania and a special mention goes to Civita di Bagnoregio , which at this time hosts the traditional ‘Palio della Tonna’, a wonderful occasion to experience an already unique town!

September is also a wonderful time for weekends on the beach or the lake: Lake Bracciano and Lake Martignano are wonderful and easy excursions from Rome and Sperlonga and Gaeta are perfect for a September swim!

Sardinia in September

Early September is a good time to enjoy a last weekend on the beach and also an excellent time to see Sardinia’s most beautiful towns.

As the month progresses, you will see a decline in the number of services available, especially buses: having your own car is recommended.

Some fun things to do in Sardinia in September are:

  • Full-day boat tour to the stunning Maddalena Archipelago , one of the most beautiful in Italy.
  • Wine tour of Sardinian wineries
  • Visit Alghero, a beautiful town with unique Catalan cultural influences
  • Visit Cagliari, often overlooked but beautiful city

Sicily in September

Sicily is perfect in September if you want to have a sea and sun vacation with also lots of sightseeing.

Syracuse Sicily duomo

Sicily in September is still hot, so you want to make sure you protect yourself from the sun while sightseeing; however, it is a good idea to keep close to the beach to cool down!

Some fun things to do in Sicily in September include:

  • Day trip to the beautiful islands of Lipari and Vulcano – a fantastic way to visit some of the most beautiful smaller Sicilian islands.
  • Day trip to Mount Etna with food and wine tasting – a fun way to see Sicily’s tallest Volcano and taste the wines from this unique volcanic area
  • Palermo food tour – a great way to taste Sicily’s delicious culinary tradition, one of the most varied in Europe
  • A day trip to Ortigia and Siracusa’s archaeological park
  • A visit to the stunning towns of Val di Noto, the heart of Sicilian Baroque architecture

You can find here >> our travel guide to Sicily

Puglia in September

Puglia is one of my favorite destinations in Italy in September.

Locorotondo Puglia Italy

Blessed with a stunning coastline and some of the prettiest towns in Italy, Puglia is a great place for mixing lazy summer sightseeing and time on the beach.

Wonderful places to visit in Puglia at this time are

• Trani – a pretty, small village with a stunning church overlooking the sea (a vision!) • Martina Franca – a lovely, whitewashed town with beautiful churches in a unique Baroque style called ‘Barocco Martinese.’ • Alberobello – the famous town of Trulli, UNESCO World Heritage Site • Locorotondo – a delightful small town with whitewashed houses and pretty balconies everywhere (they win an annual prize for them, they are so special!)

The whole coastal area is wonderful for time on the beach and Lecce and Bari are also worth a visit for their beautiful architecture and unique spirit.

You can see them all with a short road trip: you can find our three-day Puglia itinerary here.

The Dolomites in September

September is the beginning of the low season in the Dolomites.

View from Rifugio Tre Scarperi Refuge Dolomites

As temperatures drop and tourists leave, hotels and tourist facilities start to wind down however, the lower number of visitors also means you get the mountains for yourself, something the over-tourism of some areas has made impossible during the summer.

To visit the Dolomites in September, I recommend booking a comfortable hotel with an onsite restaurant, so you can lounge there in case of bad weather, and equip yourself with a good jacket.

On dry days, you can still hit the trails especially in the first part of the month but watch the weather as the month progresses and it can get bad fast.

You can find a list of our favorite places on the Dolomites here.

September in Italy with kids

Kids tend to love Italy in September as they can be in full summer mode without melting in the sun!

Two children (boy and girl) looking at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy

You can find something fun for them anywhere – below you will find our travel guides to visit Italy with kids.

Travel guides to help you plan your trip to Italy with kids are:

Our selection of the best family-friendly beaches in Italy – perfect for early September

Our guide Florence with kids – always lovely with children and not too hot at this time, allowing for plenty of time int the park and nearby farms

Venice with kids – nice if you also want to head to the beaches in the area

Tuscany with kids – September has the perfect temperature for hilltop town hopping

Rome with kids – full of indoor and outdoor attractions for all ages, including some summer-friendly sightseeing options such as the catacombs or the Circo Massimo experience

Sicily with kids – mild and beautiful perfect for family sightseeing and days on the beach

Amalfi Coast with kids – perfect for mixing sightseeing, time on the beach and exciting kid-friendly destinations such as Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius

Cinque Terre with kids – lovely for hiking and enjoying the small villages and close to Genova , which has plenty of activities for kids.

Lake Garda with kids – this is a good time for short hikes and afternoons on the lakeshore

Dolomites with kids – while September is not the best time for this area weather-wise, in the first part of the month it is still possible to enjoy easy hikes and the many pretty villages of this area

Looking for family destination ideas in Italy? Find my selection of the best places to visit in Italy with kids here.

What to book in advance for spending September in Italy.

September can be busy in Italy but advance booking for all main attractions is a must.

This is also the case in 2021 when crowds are lower but advance booking is compulsory to ensure compliance with current regulations.

You can book entrance tickets and tours to Italy’s most famous attractions following the links below:

  • Last Supper (Milan)
  • Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
  • Vatican Museums (Vatican City, Rome)
  • Colosseum (Rome)
  • Leaning tower of Pisa
  • Doge’s Palace in Venice

Trains do not usually need to be booked in advance; however, high-speed trains on popular routes such as Rome to Florence do tend to book out or only have costly tickets available.

I always recommend booking accommodation in advance and my favorite booking engine is booking.com.

They have a large selection of accommodation options and excellent free cancellation opportunities too. Click on the following links to:

  • Their home page
  • Their villa search page
  • Their rental search page

My Way Tour of Italy September 2023

If we booked a My Way Tour of Italy is it possible to pay extra and join a few of the tours in Venice, Florence and Rome. The tours could be picked and paid for in advance. We wanted the flexibility of arranging our our schedule but have quickly found the research needed to find reliable tours is extreme and reviews of the tours are questionable at best. Thank you

Lori, you should address your question to the RS office as they don't normally participate in the forums.

https://www.ricksteves.com/about-us/contact-us

For all sorts of reasons I would guess that joining the guided tours wouldn't be possible but it doesn't hurt to ask. I am wondering, tho, if you've browsed the RS Italy forum yet for recommendations for good tours/guides? The request comes up a LOT so there's a ton of firsthand info there to mine.

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you want to take the My Way Italy tour but you want to join Rick Steves' tours in Venice, Florence, and Rome? I don't think that's possible. It shouldn't be too hard to find reliable tours in those ciites. You can: 1. Ask on the forum here for recommendations of tours those of us have used and found worthwhile; or 2. Contact some of Rick Steves' guides in those cities and possibly set up private tours with them list here ; or 3. Look at the Best of Italy guidebook under those cities and he usually gives recommended tours that he finds reliable (those I would trust).

If I misunderstood your post, I apologize.

You'd have to call and ask, but I doubt it. Those tours are scheduled way in advance and based on number of people. The Venice, Florence, Rome Tour is fantastic. You can read the RS GuideBooks and he lists tour guides in his book that he recommends. Walks Of Italy gets mostly good reviews for tours.

RS does not do 'a la carte'.

If you want the flexibility and cost saving of a My Way tour, then you have do the the leg work.

but have quickly found the research needed to find reliable tours is extreme and reviews of the tours are questionable at best.

RS has done the research and vetted the guides and that is why the regular tours cost more.

I’m sure it isn’t an option for you. Id’d be a bit miffed to have someone join our tour that we paid for to have a small group. Why don’t you book one of his guide tours? They really are great! I’ve been all over Italy independently and had no problem with finding tours to take.
