Drake shows off Toronto to the world in over-the-top new video

Latest Videos

With the release of a surprise new album and an upcoming tour in just a few days' time, Drake is absolutely on fire this week, and his latest music video — also dropped just yesterday — shows that he's still proudly representing Toronto all the while.

The film clip, for the single First Person Shooter , has likely been a repeat watch for fans scrambling to get tickets to his newly-added shows with J.Cole and rushing to learn every track off of Scary Hours 3.

This is especially true for those from T.O., which serves as the setting for all of the visuals and, thus, a star in its own right.

Admittedly a little bizarre, the video starts with a cameo from Brian Baumgartner of The Office fame before cutting to a boardroom table tennis match between Drizzy and J. Cole, who go on to face off in various other ways throughout the song.

The venue was temporarily renamed  October's Very Own Arena  last month to honour both Drake performing at the venue for two consecutive nights, and the 10-year anniversary of the Raps' partnership with his OVO lifestyle brand.

Viewers are fed countless shots of the jam-packed amphitheatre, of the CN Tower, and of David Crombie Basketball Court, where Drake and Cole partake in a little shootout (in Spiderman costumes, as a reference to one of the song's lines).

After Drake throws the ball around literally the entire globe, through the OVO Arena's ceiling and into one of the Raptors' nets, the entire tone of the single switches up while the superstar and his dogs (yes, his crew in dog masks, an homage to For All the Dogs ) meet up and board the TTC, taking a fictitious Line 6 subway to the sports venue.

It is following a TTC-brand-laden streetcar ride to the site that we get the now-famous shots of Aubrey rapping atop the landmark — scenes bystanders spotted him filming  on the actual roof mid-October.

As he finishes the track, a Canadian flag flying proudly in the background, a giant statue of Drake is unveiled for the masses, overshadowing all of the metropolis's condo towers shown around it as the camera pans out.

Nah First Person Shooter is one of the hardest music videos I've ever seen. I love how Drake makes being from Toronto so cool — slav papi (@pvuj333) November 15, 2023

Like other performers from the 6ix, Drizzy often features his hometown and its attractions in his content, whether it's photos on his IG feed of him sporting a TTC jacket while perusing Shoppers Drug Mart  or a music video shot at Casa Loma .

Then there was the absolutely absurd claymation of giant women in thongs terrorizing the city for his song with fellow Toronto rapper PartyNextDoor.

Drake, full name Aubrey Drake Graham, is a Canadian rapper and actor from Toronto, Ontario. Born in 1986, Drake first rose to fame as an actor but was signed to Young Money Entertainment in 2009.

At the age of 20, Drake self-released his first mix-tape, “Room For Improvement”, which featured artists such as Lupe Fiasco and Trey Songz on the tracks. The quality of the work on this first mix tape won Drake a steady following on the underground rap scene which he grew with the release of his second and third mix tapes, “Comeback Season” and “So Far Gone”. The release of “So Far Gone” saw fans download the mix tape over 2000 times in the first two hours of its release. Two tracks from the album, “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful” hit the number one and number two positions on the US Rap charts, respectively.

This success sparked a bidding war amongst various record labels to get Drake onto their rosters. Young Money Entertainment, owned by Drake’s mentor Lil Wayne, came out successful and signed the rapper in 2009. Drake’s studio albums, including “Thank Me Later”, “Take Care” and “Nothing Was the Same”, have reached the number one spot on the US Billboard chart and each has been certified Platinum.

Drake has had multiple multi-platinum selling singles, but his most successful singles include “Hold On We’re Going Home”, "Headlines", "Take Care", "Make Me Proud", and "The Motto" (where Drake was credited with popularising the acronym YOLO).

Already the winner of one Grammy Award for his 2013 album, “Take Care”, Drake has also won a host of other awards from bodies such as the BET Awards, the MTV VMAs and the Juno Awards. Drake has won millions of fans across the world as a result of the six tours he has completed since 2010. With his work ethic and talent, there is no doubt that Drake’s hard-earned success will continue for quite some time.

Live reviews

Drake's energy on the stage is just incomparable to anybody I've seen. The way he connects with the crowd is unbelievable. I think that his energy on stage just get the crowd more hyped up so it's an all around good show whenever Drake performs. From "So Far Gone" to "Nothing Was The Same," his style and the way he gets his message across have stayed the same. That's the best thing about aging, you get better as time progresses and I think that his albums are a definite reminder of how lyrically and musically talented he is. Many artist make one or two good albums, maybe a song or two every now and then, but Drake has consistently been at the top releasing good music and is just on fire. It's easier to get to the top than to stay there, but he's proving to everyone that he has enough to get to the top and knock anyone down who try's to take him down.

I love how he makes his music to fit any type of mood that you're feeling. His music isn't just slow R&B, he has some up-tempo music that will get you feeling pumped up and ready to go. I also love how he isn't like a Lil Wayne type of rapper who just uses auto tune and throws random gun verses in his songs. Every song is well thought out, every line is placed just right, the words flow with the beat and it's just magic. Even if you don't like Drake, when "Hold on, We're Going Home" comes on you're going to start singing. His songs are just too catchy, and are just classic, so 30 years from now people will still be blasting "Take Care" in their car. From what I've watched, he gives the people their moneys worth and leaves them waiting to see Drakes next move or when he's dropping his next album. He's just an all around great artist and performer, strongly recommend seeing him.

I have never been a huge fan of Drake, but after becoming hooked on the 2013 song ‘Hold on we’re going home’, I decided to check out his back catalogue of work, and was really surprised with what I found, and immediately regretted discounting him previously.

The combination of chilled out tracks in contrast with his rapping and songs like ‘Headlines’ provides such great listening variation, covering a variety of musical genres. Drake’s recent performance at this years Grammys was simply breath-taking, drawing in the audience to the narrative of ‘Hold on we’re going home’ without being showy or over the top, yet managing to merge smoothly into the track ‘Started from the Bottom’, providing the audience with a more upbeat track.

Drake’s interaction with his audience, especially on this occasion is something which he deserves credit for, maintaining his vocal performance whilst attempting to greet as many fans as possible. For me, this injection of his personality really provides the fans with a motivation to watch him live, as the dedication to both performance and fans is something that he appears to have mastered.

He really is one of those artists that you have to see live to experience the full potential of his music.

I bought my tickets to Lil Wayne VS. Drake about 4 months ago and finally got to attend the show on Saturday. Wow. My mind was blown. First of all G-Easy Opened for them and really got the crowd warmed up for the headliners. The whole show was like a video game with Drake and Lil Wayne going back and forth with old and new hits which I was so impressed with how they really mixed it up. Drake flew above the crowd suspended holding on to a stripper pole looking stand which Lil Wayne later dogged on him for. They battled back and forth about being the most featured artist and at the end I had chills because they were both saying how grateful they were for keeping each other's music alive. It was inspiring and poetic. I was impressed it was definitely the best show I have been to this year!

Drake puts on a great show, honestly a great performer who is very talented.

However, if you’re really going to tour with migos, and they don’t show up to do their opening set, there really should be some kind of refund. I came to the show expecting to see migos and then drake and then when migos didn’t show up I went into Drakes set disappointed about missing migos. Sure two of them came out and did 2 songs but really not enough. Instead of touring with these unreliable guys, tour by yourself, I would have no problem paying exactly what I paid for just Drake.

My son is Drake biggest fan and I would love to buy him tickets to Drake concert! I would love to see him shake Drake hand. He watch all of Drake documentary, interviews and reads all of his commentaries. This playlist is all Drake and the artist he signed. He even make me sit down and watch Drake life stories. He has all of his family, friends and girlfriend listening to Drake! He ware Drake clothing line “OVO” and has his family and friends wearing OVO too! Drake to your biggest fan ever Keldrick Mumphrey he a great young man and a wonderful son! Love mom

Tickets were very expensive. This was one of the most I have ever paid for a concert ticket, need to make it affordable for his fans. His stage presence was brilliant and loved how much he relates himself to the UK and a personal bond with Birmingham. He did lots of his lesser successful songs which was disappointing, songs like crew love which lots of his fans LOVE came on for 10 seconds then he switched into another one. Just felt it lacked real good performances of his better known and his best songs.

I really liked the show! Drake was an amazing entertainer and made me feel seen and made the show worthwhile. He really suprised me in a positive way:) I loved the sequals were he talked between the songs and the drirecting of scenery was incredible. Some of the most impressive stuff I have ever seen on a stage. He was a good singer, and I liked his tribute to Rihanna. Thanks Drake, for an awesome experience. You are way coolet than I thought

One of the best concerts I've been to in a while... Then opening act: party next door wasn't very well known But when the main acts got on stage the party was really bumpin. Great set list. I can say that I was standing and dancing the whole night and rapping along. They had an interactive portion to help decide who won the rap battle between Drake and Lil Wayne through a downloaded app on your phone. Overall awesome experience!

loveshea10’s profile image

Amazing preformance! He's very enganging and interactive with the crowed, not to mention insanely talented! There was a really cool moving light show (globes of lights that were lowered and raised to create patterns above the audiance as well as change colors). Would have loved to hear more from some of his first albums but all in all a fantastic show. Definatly was worth spending the extra money for floor seats :)

Taylor808’s profile image

The Drake vs Lil wayne show was definantly a must see! The whole competitive feel of them trying to one up eachother really drove the energy up! Drake is amazing live but honestly Lil Wayne stole the show for me. Also the production value is through the roof! It's less of a concert and more of an experience! They played all of their hits as well as their old stuff! Definantly get a seat to this one!

ABOUT DRAKE:

The Canadian rapper first gained serious attention in 2009 when he debuted his EP  So Far Gone , named the hottest mixtape of the year by MTV. Fast forward to 2018, Drake dropped the platinum double LP,  Scorpion  which included a staggering 25 tracks. Succeeding the album’s release, Drake hit the road headlining  Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour  across the US with surprise guests, Meek Mill, French Montana, Travis Scott and many others. While taking a break from touring in the last five years Drake has developed some of his best work. In September of 2021, Drake released his most highly anticipated album yet.  Certified Lover Boy  became his sixth studio album and broke Apple Music’s one-day streaming record in under 12 hours. Leading into Summer of 2022, Drake surprised fans with his seventh studio album,  Honestly Nevermind  which includes a notable feature from 21 Savage. Most recently in November of 2022 Drake and 21 Savage came out with a collaborative studio album titled  Her Loss . The album reached number one on the Billboard’s 200 chart and all 16 songs debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 list.

Drake, J. Cole bring show as 'big as the Super Bowl' to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena

After rescheduling his nashville show twice, drake took to the stage in music city.

tour cn drake

Rappers Drake and J. Cole were not exaggerating when they promised the world a show as "big as the Super Bowl." The two rappers, accompanied by Lil Durk, brought a night of rap, art and fire to Nashville's Bridgestone Arena for their first of two shows.

Grammy Award-winning rap artist, Drake, born Aubrey Graham, released his eighth studio album "For All The Dogs" in October, including hit songs "Slime You Out" with SZA, "IDGAF" (feat. Yeat) and Jimmy Cooks (feat. 21 Savage).

On the album, J. Cole, born Jermaine Cole, also collaborated with Drake for song "First Person Shooter," where the two tell their listeners that their duo is as huge as America's biggest game day: "Big as the what? Big as the what? Big as the what? / Big as the Super Bowl."

The highly anticipated concert came after Drake rescheduled his Nashville shows twice . He was  originally scheduled to perform on June 19 in Nashville on his "It's All a Blur Tour" with 21 Savage.

In April, he decided to reschedule the show for October. He then pushed the shows to February and announced a 2024 leg of his tour, which was deemed the "It's All A Blur - Big as the What? Tour." This time, J. Cole would be in tow instead of 21 Savage.

'That's a true soldier, right there': Drake surprises Nashville cancer survivor with $100,000 gift

Drake postponed the start of his 2024 tour due to an ankle injury and kicked off the tour in Tampa on Feb. 2, making Nashville his second tour stop.

Photographers were not allowed access to the evening's show, but here are the show's top highlights.

Lil Durk joins Drake tour with first show in Nashville

On Tuesday, Drake announced that Lil Durk would be joining his tour on Instagram. He captioned the post , "BIGGER & BIGGER @lildurk joins us on the road to bring you all the most T’d show of your life."

Lil Durk kicked off the night in Nashville walking through the crowd with friend Morgan Wallen as a video projected them throughout the arena. Wallen, who received multiple shout outs throughout the show, stayed to watch but did not hit the stage himself.

Lil Durk started out the evening with a seven-song set, including fan favorites "AHHH HA" and "Back in Blood." Durk was accompanied by backup dancers wearing glowing masks, moving around him with ghoulish hops and hip-hop swagger.

The Chicago rapper wore a black sweatshirt, bulky chain, and black pants decorated with white daisies. His intensity and fervor captivated the crowd—especially in 2023 song "All My Life." Fans knew every word to the song: "All my life / They been tryin' to keep me down / All this time / Never thought I would make it out / They couldn't break me, they couldn't break me."

Big as the Super Bowl: The crossroads of football and music

When fans first filed into Bridgestone Arena, there was no ignoring the football stadium set up and full-on reimagination of the space. A square platform acted as a stage in the middle of the arena. Surrounding the stage was a floor decorated like a football stadium, appearing grassy and complete with the yard lines.

After Lil Durk left the stage, sports commentary from ESPN's Stephen A. Smith and social media star BenDaDonnn played on screens around the arena. The two introduced the evening with their own ESPN broadcast, chatting with an air of expertise signature to official sports journalists—but they were talking musicians.

"Maybe what they're saying is true—maybe Graham is past his prime, over the hill," Smith said. "We haven't seen Jermaine Cole in the game all night."

Ben bantered back, "And then, correct me if I'm wrong, Stephen A., but didn't [Drake] start an OnlyFans yesterday?"

Ben's reference alluded to ongoing social media frenzy surrounding Drake. Drake's Nashville shows come only two days after the leak of an x-rated video that shows him allegedly engaging in a sexual act. The video's leak on Tuesday caused him to go viral on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. As of Wednesday evening, Drake has not commented publicly on the leak.

On the mock ESPN broadcast, Ben continued, "On Twitter, he was trending... anyway... whatever he do tonight he's gonna have to step up his game. 'Cause if he don't, and if he take this L tonight, it's gonna be detrimental for light skin brothers across the globe."

Fans wondered if Drake would address the video this evening. Shortly after he hit the stage, Drake said, "I know y'all probably waitin' on me to address this, so the rumors are true," he paused..."My dad is here! That's what y'all were waitin' for?" Yes, Drake's family was in the house. No, he did not address the other questions on fans' minds.

Drake let it be known that the night would be about music and visual storytelling—and that is exactly what he focused on.

He drew heavily on the high school and collegiate sports culture, kicking off his show with a full marching band. The Jackson State Band traveled from Mississippi to accompany Drake , marching in with bustling drums and blaring horns and starting Drake's set off with"Trophies."

The show followed with a young version of Drake in a locker-room, which was built side stage. Young Drake eventually passed the mic off to the Drake we know and love—clad in a form-fitting grey foam football pads undershirt and white pants. He burst out of the fixture and began the show with "Virginia Beach," "Marvins Room" and "Teenage Fever."

Drake's backup dancers wore cheerleader apparel, complete with pom-poms and all. His dance crew shined on song "Nice for What," where they moved in a line and perched at the edge of the stage. "Rich Baby Daddy" had the dancers gyrating sensually, showing off their elastic moves on a stage surrounded by red lights, notably in homage to the song's featured artist, Sexyy Red.

On 2023 song "First Person Shooter," J. Cole and Drake rapped together as football projections lay on the stage. The two even threw playful punches at one another while green lights and pyrotechnics rained down.

Drake's busy, visual effects contrast with J. Cole's empty stage

Drake's performance was highly visual, interlaced with light arrangements that featured lasers, pyrotechnics, strobes, smoke, columns of fire and beams. It was big. It was busy—and it was captivating in all its eccentricity and artistry.

Drake brought with him a giant sculpture of late designer Virgil Abloh in motion, throwing a paper airplane. The gargantuan statue, which came with him on the first leg of the "It's All A Blur Tour," towered over the audience. At the end of the show, Abloh released his paper airplane, which flew over the stage.

Other visual highlights included: A space ship beaming Drake up on song "HYFR," fireworks during "Know Yourself," a giant bra floating above the stage after "God's Plan," an inflatable, flying, light-up sperm during "Child's Play," a Spiderman hanging from the ceiling, a giant grim reaper on "Knife Talk" and dazzling, flying blue fairies for "You Broke My Heart."

Other highlights include Drake's cover of Travis Scott's "SICKO MODE," where fireworks shot out of a giant, floating sculpture of Scott's face. Drake also sang Rihanna's song "Work" as he traveled up to the top rows of the arena on a floating cube, blowing bursts of smoke into the crowd. "Who else you know that would come visit you up top?" he said.

The list only covers half of the visual spectacles from Drake's show. J. Cole took to the stage halfway through Drake's set to perform his own portion of the show. Cole was clad simply in all black, marching out to a notably and intentionally empty stage, filled only with Cole, his microphone stand and a floating sign repping his home city of Fayetteville, North Carolina. The contrast between Drake and Cole's sets was personal and true to each artists' individual style.

Cole began with "Middle Child," and played a 10-song set. "Wet Dreamz" and "No Role Modelz" were standouts, as Cole rapped with passion and fervor, yet a conversational relatability.

The pinnacle of his performance came with an a cappella version of "The Secret Recipe," where his stripped down style spoke for itself. Though Bridgestone can hold 20,000 people for concerts, Cole seemed like he was speaking just to you.

Drake and Cole then performed "In the Morning" and "First Person Shooter" together before Drake took the stage back, calling J. Cole "one of the greatest to put his pen to a sheet of paper."

Drake shouts out Tennessee, his second home

"I'm happy to be home," Drake told the crowd about being in Tennessee. Though he was primarily raised in Toronto, Canada, Drake has a special affinity for the state.

"My dad and his entire side of my family, they from Memphis, Tennessee," Drake said. "Every summer, my dad used to drop me out in Memphis, we used to stop in Nashville. Y'all got great food, great music, and most importantly, y'all got great motherf-f***** people," he said, also calling Nashville's women beautiful.

During the show, he also gave an impassioned speech on loving your neighbor. Once he noticed a sign in the audience from a fan that read "Just Finished Chemo," he gifted cancer survivor Lauren Schwallier $100,000 . The emotional moment moved the crowd to tears and cheers, all the while changing Schwallier's life.

Drake's affinity for the city and its residents was apparent; he gave the audience all he had with a show that ranged over three hours. He sang, he rapped, he showed off his signature shuffles and hops, and he asked Nashvillians to make sure we all got our friends home safe that evening.

Then, Drake finished out the show with an encore of "Slime You Out." On Thursday night, he'll be back on Bridgestone's stage again.

Nicki Minaj

Boynextdoor's 'how' makes top 10 debut on album sales chart.

At one point, Drizzy gave Minaj a kiss on the cheek. “Make some noise for the king of Toronto,” Nicki told the audience as she walked backstage. “Make some noise for this icon, this legend.”

With Nicki undergoing a wardrobe change, the 6 God kept the party buzzing while performing “Rich Baby Daddy.” He then left the crowd with a message that could possibly be tied to his scintillating feud with Kendrick Lamar.

“I love you. You know what time it is — you know what I have to do,” he cryptically stated.

“Needle” served as a Pink Friday 2 standout and peaked at No. 34 in its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 ; the track remained on the chart for four weeks.

The trek doesn’t stop for Nicki, who is returning to her hometown on Wednesday (May 1) for a Barclays Center show in Brooklyn. She’ll then have a week off before heading back out for three dates in Texas.

As well as breaking out the song, Drake also went on to perform one song solo on the night – delivering a rendition of his 2023 track ‘Rich Baby Daddy’ while the headliner went backstage for a wardrobe change.

Before leaving the stage, the ‘God’s Plan’ rapper left the crowd with a parting message, which seemed to make a nod to his ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar . “I love you. You know what time it is — you know what I have to do,” he said.

The surprise appearance at Minaj’s headline show arrived around the same time that the Canadian rapper replied to Kendrick Lamar‘s brutal ‘Euphoria’ diss track .

On Tuesday night, Lamar released the six-minute diss track against the rapper, calling him a “master manipulator” and questioning his abilities as a father amongst other accusations. It is the latest response in a feud ignited by Lamar, who hit out against Drake and J. Cole in his guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin ‘s ‘Like That’ in March.

In response to the diss track, Drake shared a post online which seemed to mock Lamar’s lyrics: “ I’m the biggest hater / I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress / I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it’s gon’ be direct ” with a scene from cult romcom 10 Things I Hate About You .

In the original scene, Kat ( Julia Stiles ) reads out her poem about Patrick ( Heath Ledger) ,  which begins: “I hate the way you talk to me and the way you cut your hair / I hate the way you drive my car, I hate it when you stare”. The poem eventually reveals her true romantic feelings for Patrick: “But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you / Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.”

As a nod to the poem’s intentions, Drake captioned the scene with a broken heart and winky face emoji.

As for Nicki Minaj, the rapper continued her world tour last night by returning to her hometown for a Barclays Center show in Brooklyn. She’s set to wrap up the US leg of the dates with shows in Oklahoma, Houston, Dallas and Austin over the next few days, before she heads across the pond for a run of European and UK tour dates .

Visit here for remaining tickets.

The tour comes in celebration of her long-awaited ‘Pink Friday 2’ album, which arrived in December and was described by NME as a “blockbuster sequel [that] lives up to the hype” .

“Comprising 22 tracks that unfold over 70 minutes, ‘Pink Friday 2’ is probably too long, but Minaj paces it sharply. The first half pings between lean, mean hip-hop tracks and melancholy midtempos, while the second half contains a smattering of pop-rap cuts including the Rick James-sampling ‘Super Freaky Girl’,” the four-star review read.

“Minaj’s ability to impose herself on an instantly familiar sample also drives ‘Everybody’, a frantic banger built on Junior Senior’s 2002 novelty hit ‘Move Your Body’. It’s the quirkiest moment on an album where Minaj is generally more restrained than in the past. Here, she doesn’t play around with alter-egos quite as freely as on ‘Pink Friday’.”

A Power Ranking of Everyone in the Drake–Kendrick Lamar–Every Rapper Ever Battle Royale

By Alphonse Pierre

Drake Rick Ross Future and Kendrick Lamar

Pitchfork writer Alphonse Pierre ’s   rap column covers songs, mixtapes, albums, Instagram freestyles, memes, weird tweets, fashion trends — and anything else that catches his attention.

Rap’s megastars have finally found a way to keep busy outside of chasing past glories with joint albums that should have happened a decade ago and projects full of way too many 21 Savage verses . It is Rap Beef! And the hater-fueled theatrics and competition to get the best joke off or leak the juiciest gossip have most of them tapping into the kind of energy that doesn’t happen when everyone is on the same DJ Khaled song every time they need a new boat.

Happy for them. They seem to be having a good time with their little rivalries. Drake gets to bring back his If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late “Mafia Boss Living Off the Grid in a Beach Town” persona. Kendrick Lamar gets to cancel his next few sessions with Dr. Melfi . Future gets to find a new enemy who isn’t an Instagram model he met once. Rick Ross gets to show what Gotham villains would have done if they had Instagram . J. Cole gets to do uh… J. Cole stuff .

Who knows what actually got this whole rap civil war started. The rumors have ranged from romantic drama to behind-the-scenes politics, such as jealousy about Drake making Her Loss with 21 Savage. ( Metro Boomin even had a tweet where he ranted about Her Loss winning more Grammys than his own Heroes & Villains .) So, yeah, a bunch of shit that I barely care about. What is more interesting is the resurrection of rap’s eternal power struggle that launched with Future and Metro Boomin ’s March collab album, We Don’t Trust You . On the cover, they look like fleeced assassins in a Johnnie To movie out for revenge after a job that turned out to be a setup.

The scorned spirit holds strong throughout the album with brooding Metro beats that are a little too cinematic and glossy and acidic Future verses littered with subliminal messages to Drake, down to the shady album title. But the bell was officially rung on “Like That,” track six on We Don’t Trust You , where Kendrick sets off this Drake vs. the World moment by directly attacking the wannabe Toronto godfather (and J. Cole, too, for spending too much time with Drake). “Motherfuck the big three, nigga, it’s just big me,” he raps, a rejection of Cole’s suggestion that the three are the cornerstones of modern rap. (Sidenote: Bizarre that any of them think they have an argument for the crown, when Hood Hottest Princess exists.)

Kendrick’s mild jabs sent the internet into a frenzy since rap beefs among giants—that are more than just sassy tweets, and, also, where there is no sense that real-life violence could come into play—doesn’t happen so often anymore. This beef is exactly that. A high-profile battle of bars—the hit rate isn’t that high, but at least they’re bars—with a splash of memes. We haven’t gotten anything close to our next “ The Story of Adidon ” or “ Ether ” or “ Checkmate ,” but, hey, the music is piling up and the jokes are flying and I have something new to talk about with my barber. (Before this, our last conversation was about if Ice Spice is the antichrist, so, thanks, Kendrick.)

What I can’t really get past is that this entire beef feels so artificial and desperate. A collective final cry for attention by a generation of artists who are attempting to fend off an unenviable descent into the nostalgia circuit. Whatever. I’ll live in the moment and play along with the hip-hop soap opera, even if this may very well end with them all together giving away a PlayStation 5 on a Kai Cenat stream. Below is a power ranking of the contributions of all who have been tagged into this mess.

18. DJ Akademiks

How far have we fallen? The streamer taking the place of the DJ is a tragedy on par with the bruising, post-up-centric NBA center being replaced by the stretch five. (Yes, that is Wemby shade.) Especially when that streamer is DJ Akademiks, one of the corniest, most unbearable, and clickbait-chasing personalities in rap media, which is saying a lot. (As I write this, he’s setting up for a stream at Trump’s compound in Mar-a-Lago .) For some reason, both of the actual diss tracks worth a shit in this entire beef—Drake’s still-unofficial “Push Ups” and Rick Ross’ “Champagne Moments” (which has raps funny enough that we will forgive that he’s definitely just trying to promote his line of liquor)—were premiered on a DJ Akademiks stream. Where’s Funk Flex or DJ Clue or any of the many Atlanta DJs who were born for this moment? Outside of the fact that Akademiks straight-up stinks, his premiere of the songs doesn’t elevate the theatricality of the disses in any way. He sort of just sits there and motor mouth rambles his way through an attempt at analysis. No Pageantry. No charisma. So un-fucking-cool.

Kendrick Lamar Responds to Drake Disses With New Song “Euphoria”

17. Artificial Intelligence

The most boring part about all this commotion—well, besides 2024 Metro beats—is the rumors that songs may or may not be A.I. It all feels like a distraction that turns the conversation away from the music and onto whether we’re being duped. Not only that: It’s a way for the artists to upload clips of the diss tracks to social media and, if it doesn’t go over well, just claim it’s all fake. This was the discussion around Drake’s “Push Ups” (probably real) and then a Kendrick leaked snippet of a diss that has been floating around the internet (probably fake). What a killjoy.

16. A$AP Rocky, Who Is Possibly Also Artificial Intelligence

Hi, Mr. Fenty. Remember Testing ? I do. I’m still not over that. You should be banned from dissing anyone if you made Testing . But Mr. Fenty still tries to stir something with a verse on “Show of Hands,” from Future and Metro’s second album, We Still Don’t Trust You , where he seems to be pointing and laughing at Drake about the fact that he will never get to be Mr. Fenty. Good brag, but Mr. Fenty is such an unimaginative and unstylish rapper these days that every time he raps it sounds like it’s his first time. Is this really the same Mr. Fenty who made Live.Love.A$AP ? Is this really the same Mr. Fenty behind Cozy Tapes, Vol. 2: Too Cozy ? Well, Drake didn’t even waste time by calling out Mr. Fenty on “Push Ups.” Though, all he would have had to do is say, Hey, Mr. Fenty, remember Testing?

15. Joe Budden

There have been way too many mentions of streamers and podcasters in this article, so I apologize, but this is the dark place where the world wants us to be. Joe Budden is basically to Drake what Skip Bayless is to LeBron James, meaning, whenever Drake is the topic, ol’ “Pump It Up” is involved. Therefore, naturally, every time I log onto social media, there’s a new five-minute clip of Budden monologuing while his stooges nod along. I can hardly get through any of them. Did you know that most Joe Budden Podcast episodes are three and four hours long? Who the hell is listening to this shit?

Amir “Cash” Esmailian, a co-founder of XO with the Weeknd , is one of those connected industry guys who does a lot more than take Instagram photos with famous rappers—though I’m not sure what exactly that “more” is. He absorbs one of Drake’s funniest jabs on “Push Ups”: “Cash blowin’ Abel bread out here trickin’/Shit we do for bitches he doin’ for niggas.” The bar, unfortunately, is dangerously close to the blatant homophobia that stains so many of rap’s most popular diss tracks. Taken for what it is, the idea of Cash treating the Weeknd’s bank account like Ippei Mizuhara did Shoehei Ohtani is hilarious. Of course, Cash responded in the only way he knows: An Instagram photo with Future.

13. Birdman

Birdman has been one of the few in rap to take Drake’s side, which is probably a bad sign for Drake. If Birdman is on your side, you’re probably in the wrong. For my money, it’s just a way for Birdman to get a few headlines and maybe a step closer to getting a nice check off a Young Money reunion tour. I’m down as long as they don’t let Mack Maine perform his verse on “ Every Girl .”

12. Metro Boomin

It’s a buzzkill that so much of this venom has been delivered on sauceless Metro beats. The exception is “Like That” because the Rodney O & Joe Cooley sample is untouchable. That makes Drake dismissively rapping, “Metro shut yo’ hoe ass up and make some drums, nigga,” on “Push Ups” hit even harder. To give Metro some credit, he should save some of those drums for better projects in 2025.

11. Meek Mill

Meek Mill hasn’t really been involved, but he feels like he should be here.

10. Drake’s Mom

Rick Ross entered the fray by fanning rumor flames that could very well be fiction, but are funnier to pretend are fact. On “Champagne Moments,” he chose to stir up some whispers that Drake is so ashamed of his Blackness that he got a nose job to look more white. (I don’t think it’s a Jewish nose joke, but you could definitely argue it is; the more inflammatory statement is probably him calling OVO the “Pastrami Posse” on IG.) Too bad that it all led to an extremely strange response by Drake, where he posted a text conversation he had with his mom about the hearsay. “Aubs- the internet is saying you got a nose job?? You looked the same to me in the kitchen today,” she texts him in the same voice your mom would use if she were asking if you want the crust to be cut off your peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s fine that they still talk to each other like that; I just don’t need to see it. Drake caps it off by calling Ross “racist” and a “nosey goof.” Please, burn my eyes.

9. OB OBrien—Remember Him?

Drake needs more backup. Where are you? Seriously. Remember that era when OB OBrien and that other white guy from the “ HYFR ” video were Drake’s best friends? Did they get demoted? Are they working at OVO corporate now?

We don’t need to relitigate “7 Minute Drill.” J. Cole dropped a weak diss that he didn’t actually want to drop—and then immediately apologized for dropping a weak diss that he didn’t want to actually drop. He realized he wasn’t built for this, and bowed out of the fight. At first, I made fun of him for it, but—you know what?—he made the right call.

7. Kendrick Lamar

All of this picked up steam with a Kendrick verse that really wasn’t that defaming or damning. But the rivalry between Kendrick and Drake is the only bit of the hoopla that I believe has more to it than just rich guys doing wrestling promos because they’re bored. As Andre Gee pointed out , “Drake and Kendrick, however, are simply too different for either of them to stomach the masses saying they prefer the other. That will forever have them at odds.” I just wish Kendrick were funny or petty enough to hold his weight in these kinds of battles. Drake is over there on “Push Ups” calling him “pipsqueak,” but I can’t imagine Kendrick ever stooping down to that level.

6. Ja Morant

On “Push Ups,” Drake appeared to call out Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant with: “Nigga, shoutout to the hooper that be bustin’ out the griddy/We know why you mad, nigga, I ain’t even trippin’.” I have no idea what the context is, but NBA players getting involved in rap beef always adds to the spectacle.

5. The Weeknd

I cannot get a read on the Weeknd anymore. He’s sort of just a basic pop star now who feels like he could turn into Bruno Mars, but he’s also doing weird stuff like The Idol and involving himself in this mess. It’s funny, too, that most of his contributions are just harmonies in the background of We Still Don’t Trust You . And the few words he devotes to tearing down Drake on “All to Myself” (“They shooters makin’ TikToks/Got us laughin’ in the Lambo”) are sung in the same sweet, soft melody that he uses for his moody coffee shop music.

Nav’s silence says so much.

3. Rick Ross

Of anyone, Rick Ross has the greatest bit going. He’s on a crusade to convince the world that Drake got plastic surgery in order to get a six-pack. Or, as he says it, “BBL Drizzy.” Obviously, it’s not a reveal on the level of Pusha practically leaking an ultrasound, but it’s still amusing. And he doesn’t stop there. Another bit introduced on “Champagne Moments” is the way he calls Drake “white boy,” which you just know gets under Drake’s skin, even if this is all bullshit. According to Ross, his breakup with Drake stems from the fact that Drake didn’t clear a feature he did for French Montana , which checks out because the 6 Man is the kind of rapper who only collaborates with artists who give him some sort of juice in the process, and French can’t offer that anymore. My problem with Ross’ diss is that his most memorable jabs aren’t in the raps themselves, but instead in the monologue at the end or in his Instagram stories. It would be way cooler if “I know you got your Dockers on with no underwear, white boy” (is that a thing white people do?) were rapped instead of said, but I’ll just have to accept that Ross is a better public speaker than spitter these days.

Win or lose, Drake brings the best hate out of his peers. Through the years, he’s taken so much shit and just keeps chugging along. He lives for drama and theatrics in a way that feels extremely hip-hop. (“Push Ups” opens with a DJ Whoo Kid drop, a signal that his trollish behavior has been heavily influenced by 50 Cent, king of the trolls.) So far, in this round, he’s been called “white boy,” “fake friend,” and “pillow talker,” and he’s also been accused of getting a nose job and a Brazilian butt lift. There are now hit songs and hit albums where the selling point is to let the world know that he is a herb. Still, he stays the course and just keeps posting, even if it is just a lot of rich-guy blabber.

The only rapper who seems to be unscathed in the melodrama is Future. Drake has mostly shifted his ill will to Ross, Kendrick, and Metro. And, while both the Future and Metro albums are full of subliminals, he seems almost uninterested in the battle royale he kicked off. One day soon, the smoke will clear and we will all move on, and our memories of what actually happened will probably fade away. The only thing I will remember for sure is that when the stars of our rap generation were holding onto their status for dear life, Future was there, hovering above them all.

Drake Takes Down Kendrick Lamar Diss After Legal Threat From 2Pac Estate

Drake Seemingly Responds to Kendrick Lamar's ‘euphoria,' Mariah Carey's All Access in Vegas, ENHYPEN Throw First Pitch & More | Billboard News

It's Wednesday, May 1st, and Drake possibly responded to Kendrick Lamar's diss track "euphoria." Drake joined Nicki Minaj during the Toronto stop of her tour, and although he didn't respond to the diss track on the stage, he may have made a reference to it on his Instagram Story with a monologue from Julia Stiles' ‘10 Things I Hate About You.' We give you All Access to Mariah Carey's: The Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas. Shenseea stops by our studio to talk about her new album, ‘Never Gets Late Here,' her big collabs with Kanye West and more! ENHYPEN gave us details about throwing the first pitch for the Seattle Mariners, Mckenna Grace talks about her new music and more!

Tetris Kelly:

Did Drake react to Kendrick's diss track? We're talking to Shenseea and McKenna Grace. We take you inside Mariah Carey's Vegas residency and chat within ENHYPEN about throwing out the first pitch. Tetris Kelly back with Billboard News and I hope you're hungry because beef is what's for dinner. Drake took a trip to Gag City, but did he respond to Kendrick Lamar's diss track? Let's break it down. Drake joined Nicki Minaj onstage during the Toronto stop of the Pink Friday 2 World Tour just hours after Kendrick Lamar dropped "euphoria," which took aim at Drizzy. While the Toronto native didn't address the track onstage, fans think he may have been responding to it on his IG Story. He posted the iconic Julia Stiles monologue from '10 Things I Hate About You' with a broken heart and a winky face. If those two are related, it looks like he's not taking the diss track too seriously. Everyone's waiting to see if Drake responds lyrically. His last track "Push Ups" debuted at No.2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while Kendrick's OG diss track with Metro Boomin and Future "Like That" spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, proving this beef is the feud that keeps on giving. I had the pleasure of seeing one of the best vocalists of all time and I'm taking you along for the ride.

Mo'Nique Reportedly Called Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey 'C**n Motherf*kers' During Stand-Up Rant

Mo'Nique still has problems with Perry and Winfrey, 15 years after the duo allegedly had the actress-comedian blacklisted from Hollywood.

Mo'Nique continues to hold a grudge against Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey as seen (and heard) in a recent stand-up rant.

During a spot as the opener on Katt Williams ' "Dark Matter" Tour, Mo'Nique slammed the billionaires in a rant that she even asked the audience to repeat. "Fuck you, Oprah Winfrey! Fuck you, Tyler Perry!" she shouted at the beginning of the clip below. "Fuck them c**n motherfuckers! I said it, n***a, say it with me!"

When noticing that some people in the crowd were "scared" and didn't want to say Mo'Nique's chant, she mocked them, saying, "I love that Black raggedy bitch. I love that Black simple-minded motherfucker. I love Oprah Winfrey's Black ass. And we just need to bring her back to Black."

After asking one person, named Melvin, if they're an Oprah Winfrey fan, they seemed to confirm it, but Mo'Nique said, "Okay, well I'm not apologizing for any motherfucking thing I say."

"We need you to help us bring that bitch back to Black. I need you to bend her the fuck and fuck her like a Nashville, Tenessee n***a would, and bring that bitch back to Black," Mo told Melvin.

Mo'Nique makes audience call Oprah and Tyler Perry"coon motherf**kers!" while she is filmed still going off on Oprah and Tyler Perry during Katt Williams' tour. pic.twitter.com/ymYbSs64w3 — The Art Of Dialogue (@ArtOfDialogue_) May 1, 2024

Mo'Nique went on to allege that Winfrey and her best friend, TV personality Gayle King , are lovers, saying, "I've never seen best friends like that."

"We ain't seen Stedman [Graham] in 30 motherfucking years," she added. "Who is loving Oprah and Gayle King? Each other! But we don't want to say the shit out loud. I'm too motherfucking old to be scared of this bitch. I'm too motherfucking old to be intimidated by this bitch. I'm too old to hold the motherfucking truth."

She continued, "You know why I fuck with Oprah Winfrey, Melvin? 'Cause that bitch tried to fuck with me privately. But I'm a public bitch. You try to fuck with me behind closed doors, bitch open the door up. Ding-dong, I'm gonna let your motherfucking ass in. Now are you gonna fuck her or not?"

The rant might have a little something to do with Mo'Nique allegedly being "blackballed" after not partaking in unpaid promotion for 2009 film Precious , which Winfrey and Perry were executive producers for.

In Februrary, Mo'Nique discussed her long-running issues with the two in an episode of Shannon Sharpe 's podcast Club Shay Shay .
