The 9 Best Train Rides to Take From New York City

Getting there is half the fun.

Being in New York City never gets old, but just in case, on those rare occasions you’re looking to escape, it’s easy to find a nearby getaway destination. And all you need to do to get there is book a train ticket.

Train travel in the U.S. isn’t exactly as easy as, say European or Japanese train travel, but thankfully those living in New York City live in the epicenter of railway transportation in America. It’s a snap to get to and from destinations near and far on Amtrak, the MTA, and the Long Island Railroad. If you need a little inspiration on where you should go, here are nine places to travel via train that are worthy of taking the slow route.

NYC to Chicago: 22 hours

Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited offers daily departures to whisk New Yorkers away to the Windy City. The route takes passengers through some gorgeous upstate New York areas, then on to Lake Michigan before entering Chicago. According to Amtrak, the best seat in the house is the Viewliner accommodations, including the Viewliner Bedroom Suite , which comes with a foldout bed, ideal for the overnight journey. Once at your destination, it’s time to explore the best attractions in Chicago , like The Art Institute of Chicago, set out on a local architectural walking tour, and see The Bean, and stay at the luxe Pendry Chicago .

NYC to Westerly, Rhode Island: 3 hours

For a quicker getaway, board Amtrak’s Northeast Regional to Westerly, Rhode Island, a quiet little beach town ideal for a refreshing weekend. Though quick, the train passes through some idyllic landscapes in Connecticut, over bridges, past glittering water views, and pastoral fields. Once in Westerly, disembark the train and make your way to The Ocean House , arguably one of the most luxurious hotels in America. There, kick off your shoes in one of its 49 guest rooms that offer ocean views, enjoy its spa experiences, and walk right to the beach. If you do happen to leave the hotel, you’ll also be rewarded with an adorable small-town experience. Make your way downtown to shop in spots like the Savoy Bookshop and Cafe , dine on local bites at The Cooked Goose , or just tuck your toes into the sand for a day at Misquamicut Beach.

NYC to Boston: 3 hours 43 minutes on Acela, 5 hours on Regional

Keep going north on the Northeast Regional for a few more stops, and you’ll hit Boston . This journey continues the stellar views through bucolic landscapes and a sprinkling of city views as you pass through Providence. This journey also offers a slow and fast version. For a quicker getaway (where the views zoom so fast you may miss them), choose the Acela option, which has fewer stops and faster speeds. But if you’ve got time, take the slower Regional train. Once in Boston , soak in a little history by walking The Freedom Trail and visiting the Paul Revere House, and grab a bit of culture at the Institute of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Fine Arts. And if you happen to be there during baseball season, absolutely do not miss a Red Sox game at Fenway. Boston is brimming with stellar hotels to choose from, but a perennial favorite is The Langham, Boston , a hotel built inside the old Federal Reserve Bank that’s centrally located in the city, making it a great home base for your stay.

NYC to Philadelphia: 1 hour 20 minutes

If the allure of an ooey, gooey, downright delicious cheesesteak is calling your name, then it's time to hop a quick train south to Philadelphia. Though the views during this ride won't be the best, it's worth it for where the train stops: William H. Gray III 30th Street Station . First opened in 1933, the station maintains much of its original charm, including towering ceilings (95 feet high to be exact) and art deco touches. It's also home to "The Porch," an outdoor area connecting the station to Market Street. The station is so spectacular it made its way to the National Register of Historic Places. It's also a stone's throw away from major attractions in the city, including The Academy of Natural Sciences and Independence Hall. As for that cheesesteak, it's up for debate on who serves it best, so we'll let Visit Philly settle this one by sharing its list of best cheesesteaks here . As for where to rest after you dine, check into Wm. Mulherin's Sons Hotel , a chic and centrally located boutique hotel with timeless design, including exposed brick and beams.

NYC to Delaware: 2 hours

Go just an absolute smidge past Philadelphia, and you’ll hit Wilmington, a small city that’s a history buff’s dream. Getting there takes the same route as the train to Philly, but by going a touch farther, you start to hit more verdant landscapes before entering the city of 70,000 people. In Wilmington, depart at Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station, a railway stop named after President Biden thanks to his famed trips back and forth to Washington, D.C . on this very railway. Once you’re out, make your way to places like the Delaware Art Museum , Fort Christina , and Nemours Estate , a stunning 200-acre garden and 77-room mansion that will make you feel like you’re back in the Gilded Age. After seeing the local attractions, check into the Hotel Du Pont , a 12-story Italian Renaissance building that opened in 1913 smack dab in the middle of downtown.

NYC to Washington, D.C.: 3 hours on Acela, 3 hours 40 minutes on Regional

Take your trip a few stops further and make your way to the nation’s capital, a journey that takes you through more cityscapes (including Philadelphia and Baltimore), with a smattering of green spaces in between. However, like Boston, this train too comes with a faster option on the Acela, cutting 40 minutes of travel time if you’re really in a rush. In D.C., historical and cultural sites abound, including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Mall, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and of course, tours of the White House. In D.C., keep the historical times going by booking a stay at The Watergate Hotel, which, yes, is the very one associated with the political scandal by the same name.

NYC to New York's Adirondacks: 3 hours 30 minutes

Need a big breath of fresh air? Hop aboard Amtrak’s Adirondacks line that travels from New York City all the way to Montreal. Don’t worry. You don’t need to go that far to find wide-open spaces. Just hop off in Saratoga Springs. The journey is perhaps one of the most breathtaking on this list, winding travelers through pastures and New York towns like Rhinecliff and Hudson before coming to rest in the quaint rail station in Saratoga. In town, make your way to the Saratoga Spa State Park , a place so stunning it was named a National Historic Landmark. While there, see if there’s a show playing at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center , and explore a bit of its delightful downtown. Then, check into the Adelphi Hotel , a 32-room boutique hotel that underwent a major renovation in 2017, breathing new life into this historic spot.

NYC to Montauk, New York: 3 hours

Amtrak isn’t the only train game in town. New Yorkers can also board the Long Island Railroad to Montauk for a seaside break. The views outside this train quickly transform from high rises to small towns as you make your way through Long Island, taking a nearly straight shot down the coast until you hit the very tip of the island. Yes, Montauk has long been favored as a summer escape thanks to its idyllic beaches, but don’t skip over it for a fall or even winter escape for a crowd-free scene. In Montauk, go see the Montauk Point Lighthouse, walk along Ditch Plains Beach, and set out on a horseback ride with Deep Hollow Ranch , the first established cattle ranch in the U.S. Then, rest at Gurney’s Star Island , a hotel boasting a private beach, complimentary beach cruisers, and several delicious dining venues.

NYC to Sleepy Hollow, New York: 53 minutes

For an under an hour journey, hop aboard the Metro-North Railroad to the storied town of Sleepy Hollow. Embark at Grand Central and take the commuter rail, which snakes north through the city before popping out in greener pastures once you hit stops like Greystone. Sleepy Hollow is technically a village with just 10,000 permanent residents, only adding to its charms. If you're there during spooky season, guests should pay a visit to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and see The Headless Horseman Bridge that traverses the Pocantico River. For something a little less spooky, visit Kykuit , the former estate of the Rockefellers. Book a few nights in the Castle Hotel and Spa , a one-time private residence turned into a dreamy 31-room accommodation.

The best train trips from NYC for a scenic rail adventure

New York City is just a few hours from historic cities and beautiful communities accessed via train—and with breathtaking views along the way!

As much as the U.S. is heavily car-dependent and the American past time is a good ol’ summer  road trip along historic routes across the states, the Northeast is definitely spoiled with accessible rail connections making it easy for rail aficionados, business travelers, tourists and anyone to sojourn between cities and small towns for quick day trips and weekend getaways in any season. New York City, especially, is within 10 hours of some historic cities and beautiful communities accessed via train—and with breathtaking views along the way!

Even though the region doesn’t have sweeping scenic train rides such as the California Zephyr going into the Rocky Mountains or the Coast Starlight route with Cascade Mountains and Pacific Coast views, the New York/Northeast route can still boast of historic landmarks and ruins along the Hudson Valley, sparkling waters of the Connecticut coastline in summer, and truly spectacular fall foliage in autumn.

Check out these direct train routes that’ll offer up scenic views right outside your window.

These Historic Rail Journeys From New York City Revive the Golden Age of Travel

By Hannah Towey

Train lovers everywhere wait all year for Hudson River Rail's annual excursions that allow passengers to relive the historic splendor of the 20th Century Limited express passenger train, once billed as the “most famous train in the world.” The popular rail journeys sell out every year—and last year, tickets were snapped up in minutes.

Why? Traveling up the Hudson River in two restored vintage train cars, passengers are transported back in time to the 1940s and 50s, when movie stars and presidents boarded the train via red carpet. The scenic train trips follow the original New York Central Railroad main line between Manhattan and Albany, about an eight-hour round trip.

For those looking to experience the golden age of travel themselves, the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey has just released the 2024 Hudson River Rail schedule with departures slated from April through July, as well as in October and November (ideal for catching views of fall foliage ).

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Scenery Railway Train Transportation Vehicle Road Plant and Vegetation

The popular Hudson River Rail day trips travel up the Hudson River between New York City and Albany.

Passengers can choose from two classes of service, both of which include lunch and drinks. The luxurious observation lounge, named the Hickory Creek, was the the rearmost—and most exclusive—car on the 20th Century Limited, and is the last-remaining car from the original train. It's since been meticulously restored to its historic appearance, from the signature oversized windows to the vintage carpeting and furniture. If you can't nab one of Hickory Creek's dozen or so seats, then Tavern Lounge No. 43, a lounge car first built in 1947, offers a more affordable alternative to experience the historic route. With seats facing inward and plenty of room to meander, drink, and chat, both of the cars foster a refreshingly social atmosphere on board.

In addition to the day trips from New York City's Penn Station to Albany, this year will premier two new offerings, including overnight itineraries between Chicago and New York. During four one-way and roundtrip journeys in June and July, passengers will sleep aboard the train's historic Pullman Sleeping Cars, indulge in multi-course meals cooked on-board by a private chef, and enjoy the open bar service available throughout the trip.

For the history buffs out there, the 2024 schedule includes a new variation on the classic day trip excursion: the Hudson Valley History Tour. The excursions, slated in May, October, and November, offer a fully narrated tour of the Hudson River Valley in partnership with the National Park Service’s Trails & Rails program.

Tickets go on sale March 15 at 10 a.m., with day trip prices ranging from $179 to $399. The overnight journeys between New York and Chicago are $1,600 for a one-way trip and $3,200 for a round trip.

7. Cardinal Train

Amtrak runs the Cardinal, a long-distance passenger train, between New York Penn Station and Chicago Union Station.

The Cardinal, which travels between New York and Chicago, offers breathtaking vistas of the natural splendor of the Southeast.

You’ll see West Virginia’s untamed, white-water rivers, the State’s gently undulating horse countryside, the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Highlands, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Shenandoah Valley, as they are only viewable by train.

The railway travels west along the banks of the Ohio River, passing through the little villages of Ashland, Maysville, and Cincinnati’s skyline.

Your route then continues north to Indianapolis and then south to Chicago.

The Cardinal train ride is the perfect way to take a serene, beautiful journey that gets you where you’re going and feeds your spirit.

Traveling to Europe? Book one of these new train trips.

Europe is in the midst of a great rail revival. An increased awareness of environmental issues , the many hassles of air travel and the mental effort required to drive long distances are all reasons for people to get back onto trains. European passenger numbers are on the rise again, if not quite at pre-pandemic levels .

In response, operators across the continent are investing in new services, tracks and special offers. And it’s only going to get better: Dozens of projects are in motion from the Baltic states to Portugal, with the European Union aiming to double high-speed rail traffic by 2030 and supporting “10 pilot projects to establish new rail services or improve existing ones” right now .

My family’s summer will involve a train journey from Paris to Barcelona, down the Rhône valley and along the Mediterranean coast, but you don’t have to travel at 200 miles an hour to get the best out of Europe’s rail network.

From slow trains to high-speed bargains, there are plenty of options if you’re traveling in Europe in the next few months.

1. New sleepers from Belgium and Sweden

The sleeper train revival is picking up speed. They seemed to be on the way out in 2016, when the government of France, their last stronghold, decided to cut funding for a number of services. Happily, many of those have since been restored, and other countries around Europe — most notably Austria, under the brand name Nightjet — are investing heavily in night trains.

This summer sees the debut of a service between Brussels and Berlin, two key political centers, run by a new company called European Sleeper . Customers can leave Brussels at 7:22 p.m. (or Amsterdam at 10:34 p.m.) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and arrive in Berlin at 6:48 a.m. Return trips depart on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. There are three types of tickets, starting at $85: a seat, a bed in a six-berth compartment or a bed in a three-bed compartment.

Other night trains have also recently been introduced, such as Stockholm to Hamburg , which started in the fall, or Paris to Vienna , which began in 2021.

I’ve traveled on night trains from Paris to the south of France on a number of occasions. The experience is not luxurious, but it’s generally cheaper than the cost of a flight and a room — and the beds, while slim, are surprisingly comfortable. Be warned, though: The romance of trundling across Europe in the dead of night can make it hard to sleep.

2. German rail pass for $50 a month

Last summer Germany’s national rail company, Deutsche Bahn, offered monthly passes for the country’s huge network for under $10, a response to cost-of-living problems caused by a sharp rise in costs for electricity, food, heating and mobility. The success of that project has led to the introduction of the Deutschland-Ticket , which will cost around $50 a month and allow unlimited travel on all trains, buses and city subway services, with the exception of the most direct and speedy intercity services.

The possibilities are enticing. Beer lovers, for example, could travel from Düsseldorf to Cologne to Bamberg and onward to Munich, hopping off for distinctive local brews along the way. Those in search of scenery, meanwhile, might prefer the West Rhine Railway, stretching down the Rhine from Cologne in the north to Mainz.

One thing to remember: The Deutschland-Ticket is only available as a rolling, app-based subscription. British train expert Mark Smith, better known online as the Man in Seat 61, recommends canceling by the 10th of the month to avoid being charged for more than a month.

3. The first 100-mph locomotive, in the U.K.

Given locomotives are a British invention, the rail network in the United Kingdom can be a disappointment. Yes, it’ll get you where you need to go, eventually, but services are often late, and there’s only one high-speed line, used by Eurostar and domestic services, from London into the Kentish countryside. The current national debate over ongoing construction of HS2 (High Speed 2) offers a reason: NIMBY -ish attitudes tend to triumph over the greater good.

No wonder Britons are wont to retreat into the past for comfort. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the world’s first fully authenticated 100-mph passenger locomotive, the Flying Scotsman; as a result, a number of special excursions are planned. For those who can afford it, the Centenary Weekender looks like the most appealing trip, from London to York and then Edinburgh, followed by a jaunt up Scotland’s beautiful East Coast.

The Flying Scotsman may be unique, but Europe is full of historical interest. There’s another anniversary, too: The Wuppertal Schwebebahn , a remarkable suspension railway that continues to operate, was completed in 1903 . And then there’s the Beaux-Arts Canfranc Station, opened as the crossing point from Spain to France in 1928, which was revived as a hotel this year .

4. A $7 high-speed train in Spain

Budget services are increasingly common in Europe, but no one is moving so fast as Spain’s Avlo , which runs high-speed, low-cost trains between Madrid and Barcelona, with tickets starting around $7. The network is expanding: From the start of June , there’s a new route from the Spanish capital to Andalusia, taking in Cordoba, Seville and Malaga.

In France, there’s Ouigo , which provides high-speed and standard services from Paris to cities all around the country, including Bordeaux, Marseille and Strasbourg. The advantage of the standard service — which offers tickets starting around $11 — is that prices don’t change, so you can get a last-minute bargain. The U.K., too, has a low-cost service , from London to Edinburgh via Newcastle, although tickets are not always such good value.

5. New subway lines in Turkey and England

Few cities have seen such huge investment and rapid improvement in subway provision as Istanbul. Earlier this year, a line connecting Istanbul Airport to the city opened, while other new lines and extensions are entering service all the time. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a city that had virtually no underground transport until 1989.

It’s not the only capital to be investing in underground trains, though. The experience of visiting Copenhagen has been transformed by the 2019 opening of the City Circle Line . Since last summer, visitors arriving at London Heathrow can reach the city center, and much besides , far quicker courtesy of 2022’s Elizabeth Line.

Paris, meanwhile, is in the foothills of a significant expansion program, Grand Paris Express , which will provide new connections in the city’s long-neglected suburbs. You can expect to see those services start to come online next year, when Paris hosts the Olympics and when Metro Line 14 will be extended to Orly, Paris’s second-largest airport.

It’s official, Brightline West to break ground on high-speed rail project this month

train journeys from new york

Brightline West will officially break ground this month on its $12 billion high-speed rail project between Las Vegas and Southern California.

The historic groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the future Brightline West station site in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Brightline West’s flagship station will be located on 110-acres north of Blue Diamond Road, between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard and south of Harry Reid International Airport.

Expected speakers at the groundbreaking event include the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Brightline founder and chairman Wes Edens and federal, state and local officials from California and Nevada.

Brightline officials said its California/Nevada project received a  financial boost in December when President Biden announced $3 billion  in funding from the Administration’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Brightline West will connect Las Vegas and Southern California with the first true high-speed passenger rail system in the nation, the company said.

Brightline West officials did not reveal a construction timeline or groundbreaking events in Southern California.

California stations

The all-electric rail service will also include passenger stations in Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Rancho Cucamonga.

The Victor Valley Station will be located 300 acres southeast of the Dale Evans Parkway and I-15 interchange in Apple Valley. The station may serve as the future hub for connecting to the High Desert Corridor and California High-Speed Rail systems, the company said.

The Hesperia Station will be located within the I-15 median at the I-15/Joshua Street interchange. The station will function primarily as a local rail service for High Desert residents making trips into greater Los Angeles on select southbound morning and northbound evening weekday trains.

The Rancho Cucamonga Station will be located on 5 acres at the northwest corner of Milliken Avenue and Azusa Court near Ontario International Airport. The station will be co-located with existing multi-modal transportation options, including Metrolink, for connectivity to downtown Los Angeles and other destinations throughout Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

High-speed rail

Fieldwork for the proposed rail corridor within the Interstate 15 right-of-way began in January in advance of the final stages of design in preparation for the groundbreaking.

In 2020, Brightline West officials entered into a lease agreement with Caltrans to use the existing right of way along I-15 for the $12 billion, 218-mile high-speed rail project.

At speeds up to 200 miles per hour, trains will take passengers 218 miles from Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga in about two hours, twice as fast as the normal drive time, Brightline officials said.

Trains are expected to operate daily at one-hour intervals. A trip between Hesperia and Rancho Cucamonga is expected to take about 35 minutes.

The rail line will be powered via overhead electric catenary wiring, with a power substation set to be built near Hesperia.

Brightline founder Wes Edens told the Los Angeles Times that his company will have to charge $400 for a round-trip ticket between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas. Edens added that they are still testing out prices, so nothing is official, but the cost could change depending on the time of booking.

Job opportunities

In partnership with unions and governed by project labor agreements, the Brightline West project is expected to create over 10,000 union construction jobs, most not requiring a college degree.

Inclusive of jobs that go into materials production, transportation, and other key elements to constructing the system, the project will support more than 35,000 jobs across the construction period.

At operations, Brightline West is expected to support over 1,000 permanent jobs in operations and maintenance, about 900 of those being full-time union jobs.

Brightline’s goal is completion of the rail system by summer 2028, in time for the summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the company said.

Norfolk Southern Settles Derailment Suit for $600 Million

The railroad company will pay residents and businesses in East Palestine, Ohio, and the surrounding area after a derailment last year.

Plumes of smoke rise over the derailed Norfolk Southern train. A fire is visible to the right.

By J. Edward Moreno

Norfolk Southern announced on Tuesday that it had agreed to pay $600 million to settle a class-action lawsuit stemming from a February 2023 derailment of a train carrying hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio.

The settlement, which requires approval by Judge Benita Y. Pearson of U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, includes payments to residents and businesses within 20 miles of the derailment. It also resolves personal injury claims within a 10-mile radius of the derailment.

“Individuals and businesses will be able to use compensation from the settlement in any manner they see fit to address potential adverse impacts from the derailment,” Norfolk Southern said in a statement. “This could include health care needs and medical monitoring, property restoration and diminution, and compensation for any net business loss.”

The lawyers representing the victims said the settlement was “a fair, reasonable and adequate result for the community on a number of levels,” including the speed in which the resolution was reached and how much money residents and businesses would receive.

Beth Graham, a lawyer at Grant & Eisenhofer who represented the plaintiffs, said her team had received an “overwhelmingly positive” response from East Palestine and its surrounding area. It’s still unclear exactly how many people would be eligible for compensation, but the number is likely to be in the tens of thousands, she said.

“The community as a whole has been grateful and relieved that this is the first step in putting this behind them and getting them some sort of compensation,” Ms. Graham said in an interview.

The derailed train was carrying a variety of cargo, including 700,000 pounds of vinyl chloride, a chemical used to make plastics. Fearing an explosion, officials released the contents of the car carrying the chemical and set them ablaze in the town, sending up huge plumes of smoke and alarming residents.

Hundreds of people were evacuated after the derailment. Many remain concerned about contamination and say they do not trust the assurances they have received from Norfolk Southern and state and federal officials that their town and homes are safe.

After the incident, regulators vowed to double down on rail safety, and lawmakers promised to pass legislation to prevent similar disasters. But proposals to improve rail safety have been bogged down in Congress, and the number of derailments at the five biggest railroads increased last year .

President Biden traveled in February to East Palestine , where some residents, including the mayor, lamented how long it had taken him to visit.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs said in a court filing that they would seek approval from Judge Pearson no later than April 19. The settlement is in addition to the more than $100 million that Norfolk Southern has already paid to the community, including $21 million in direct payments to residents.

The company said it was not admitting liability or fault. The settlement was reached after “extensive fact discovery, expert development and three days of mediation,” according to a Tuesday court filing by the company and the plaintiffs’ lawyers.

Norfolk Southern is still facing a lawsuit filed by the Ohio attorney general, Dave Yost, for the environmental damage that resulted from the derailment. In a February statement , Mr. Yost said he would not settle the suit “without a detailed understanding of what happened, who is responsible and how we avoid other communities like East Palestine from being victims to this type of incident.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident but has not yet released its final report.

NJ Transit Northeast Corridor service resumes after overhead wire issue

WABC logo

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Monday's overhead wire issues near Metuchen continued to impact New Jersey Transit service on Tuesday as repair work continued.

As of Tuesday morning, Northeast Corridor service resumed in both directions between Trenton and Rahway, but with some delays.

Those wire issues caused major disruptions to NJ Transit and Amtrak rail service on the Northeast Corridor during the height of the evening commute on Monday.

By Tuesday afternoon, NJ Transit and Amtrak both said they were operating regular service.

On Monday evening, Northeast Corridor rail service was suspended in both directions between New York and Trenton for several hours .

Service resumed during the evening commute, but was subject to up to two-hour delays.

Amtrak warned commuters that all trains traveling between New Brunswick and New York Penn Station would experience delays of at least three hours.

Video showed passengers exiting the disabled train between cars.

‘Super commuter' takes bus, train and plane to get to NYC job

The city believes there are 64,000 super commuters who travel from outside of the tri-state to work in manhattan., by melissa colorado • published april 14, 2024 • updated on april 16, 2024 at 10:29 am.

How far are you willing to commute to get to work?

Hairstylist Kaitlin Jorgensen works at a salon on Manhattan's Upper West Side, but it takes more than just a bus and a train ride to get her to the office.

Her commute also includes a plane ride.

"I'm able to take the first flight out of Charlotte on Wednesday morning," Jorgensen told News 4.

Get Tri-state area news and weather forecasts to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York newsletters.

That's right, Jorgensen lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her commute to work is nearly 600 miles.

"The pros are not paying New York City rent. As we know, it is quite expensive," she said.

Her commute, which she documents on TikTok, involves an Uber to the airport, an hour and a half flight to LaGuardia Airport, hopping on the bus to Manhattan and then transferring to a train to get to the Upper West Side. And voilà, she's at work.

NY lawmakers pass $237B budget addressing housing construction and migrants

"I've been doing this commute for almost a year now," the super commuter shared.

Jorgensen said the extreme commute has saved her thousands of dollars -- most of that in rent. The average rent for an apartment in the city is roughly $3,747. It's less than half of that in Charlotte, where the average rent is a little more than $1,400.

"I stay at my friend Jenni’s house. I pay her a little bit for rent so it works out both ways that’s one of the things that made it really affordable to do this back and forth, I don’t have to get a hotel every time," she said.

Jorgensen is not alone. The city believes there are 64,000 super commuters who travel from outside of the tri-state to work in Manhattan.

The extreme commute underscores another issue – New York City’s unaffordability crisis. A recent report by the Center for Women’s Welfare uncovered half of all households do not earn enough to cover their basic needs.

Man hit and killed by Brightline train in Barefoot Bay

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — An unidentified man was struck and killed by a Brightline train in Barefoot Bay on Thursday morning, a Brevard County Sheriff's Office spokesman confirmed.

The incident occurred at the railroad crossing at Barefoot Bay Boulevard, authorities said.

Barefoot Bay Boulevard is closed as the investigation continues.

Thursday's pedestrian death marks the fourth in Brevard County since Brightline trains began running in late September 2023. The other three were killed in Melbourne, and in each of those cases, the individuals walked past crossing gates.

No other details are available on Thursday's fatal incident.

An Indialantic man was killed in February at the Fee Avenue crossing in Melbourne when he was hit by a Brightline train.

In January, two fatal crashes occurred when vehicles were struck by one of the fast-speed trains at the crossing near WH Jackson Street near U.S. 1. In both of those cases, the drivers of the cars were captured on the camera of a local business driving around the guard gate after it already had come down.

To try to increase safety at the crossings , Brightline installed “red-light” cameras at specific crossings to help identify drivers that go around the quad gates when they're down. An additional safety campaign used to educate drivers also was put into place.

train journeys from new york

A warning sign at the Barefoot Bay crossing says, "Trains may exceed 80 mph."

Crashes involving Brightline trains that involve drivers maneuvering around guard gates prompted the Florida Legislature to pass  HB 1301 , a  state law that imposes first-offense penalties like $500 fines, 25 hours of community service and six points on an offender’s driver’s license. The law calls for a $1000 fine and six more points for a second offense. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the measure into law.

This is a developing story.
