La Tour-d'Aigues, Provence

A small village with an impressive ruined Renaissance chateau at its centre

Visitors to La Tour d'Aigues are mostly drawn here thanks to it's large and impressive ruined castle, which dates back to 1550 and which was burnt down at the time of the Revolution. 

The chateau has undergone various stages of renovation work over the years, and some of these works have revealed a number of interesting archaeological finds which are now housed in the museum on the castle grounds. 

The village lies not far from the Luberon national park , which is worth a short drive to get to to enjoy its many hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails. 

Sights & Attractions in [locality]

As well as the ruins of the castle, there is also a 13th century church in La Tour d'Aigues and a museum housing an earthenware pottery collection (with finds discovered in various renovations of the chateau) which can be found in the lower levels of the castle. You can also tour round some of the vineyards that surround the village and do a spot of wine tasting.

There is are regular markets here on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June to September in the castle square. In summer you'll also be able to enjoy the South Luberon dance, theatre and music festival in the castle grounds.

There are a small handful of restaurants in the village, mostly French but then there is both a Vietnamese and a Thai restaurant too. 

La Tour d'Aigues can be found in the South Luberon, which is part of the Vaucluse region of Provence. It's around 6km north east of Pertuis, the closest town which only takes around 10 minutes by car. Further south, Aix en Provence can be reached in roughly 35 minutes drive.

La tour d'aigues holds its summer festival at the château.

Capital of the Pays d’Aigues, La Tour d'Aigues is situated between the southern Luberon and the Durance. Surrounded by hills, the village itself culminates at 270 metres altitude, high enough to fully appreciate the surrounding landscapes.

The plains at the foot of the village, where farms and vineyards lie harmoniously side by side, contribute to the area's flourishing activity.

In summer, the wine cooperative of La Tour d'Aigues organises picnics in the vineyards and an introduction to wine tasting of the Luberon wines (reservations on 04 90 07 51 65).

One of the village's inspiring stories concerns the Renaissance Château. Renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was later destroyed by an accidental fire, then once again during the French Revolution before being abandoned and used as a quarry.

In the 1980s, upon the initiative of the General Council, it arose from the dust. Around the same time, an association was created and breathed a new and cultural life into it. For over twenty years now, it has been hosting the Jazz Festival (organised by the AJMI) and today welcomes eclectic artists during the Summer Festival of La Tour, which begins in early July and lasts until mid-August.

The Château also houses the Faïence Museum and has an exhibition space with a year-round programme. Keep an eye out for more to come...

For a café crème , walk across the street to Café du Château–where we found our friend Emmi, studying the market and enjoying her view of what remains of a château that was once considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Provence.

Looks and sounds wonderful! Especially those gorgeous green and red peppers AND l'ail aux herbes: miam-miam!

I'll be in Tours for the month of Oct. and could perhaps make a foray down to Lourmarin to visit this lovely town and see where Camus lived, etc. Not the high season for les marchés en plein air, I suspect…

So many of the Luberon markets are catering to the tourists rather than the people who live there that a market like this is refreshing. Thanks fo bringing it to our attention.

The market looks lovely with such wonderful and colorful produce but, unlike Henry, I was not particularly moved by the photo of the confits d'ail! 🙂 I think it is fun to visit different markets just to see what is a little different in each. But Cucuron has my heart, too!

I talked with someone recently for whom La Tour-d’Aigues is her favorite. She said it has everything she wants, friendly vendors, and a pretty venue. She stressed that it is a "real" market as is, she said, the market in Pertuis. I will be covering the Pertuis market soon.

There are many people to choose to go to this market for the very reason you mention. In the next couple of weeks, I will write about the Pertuis market, another "authentic" market, according to locals.

October is still a busy time for markets. Not the elbow-to-elbow kind of crowds that summer brings but the offerings are still very good! Keep me posted on your travels!

Les portes de nos gîtes "Les Bastides Tourmaline" à La Tour-d'Aigues vous sont grandes ouvertes toute l’année.

Nos hébergements sont situés à 20 min de l'autoroute d'Aix-en-Provence, 45 min de Marseille, au pied du Luberon avec ses villages typiques et ses marchés.

Loin de l’agitation urbaine, ici, c'est la nature qui rythmera vos journées.

Le lieu est idéal pour se ressourcer dans l’un de nos 2 gîtes climatisés (classé 3*) sur une propriété de 2 ha. Un autre gîte, situé dans le centre du village, permet des locations de longues durées (mutation, travail, stage...)

Votre animal de compagnie est le bienvenu chez nous.

Profitez également d’un accès internet direct pour pouvoir télétravailler si vous le souhaitez
