Zanzibar is a truly wonderful island that offers some of the finest tropical beaches within Africa. The name itself has captivated travellers imagination over the years and certainly lives up to expectations. Alongside the idyllic, crystal clear sea and vibrant reefs, excellent for diving, the island has a rich cultural and historical offering, particularly within the old Stone Town.

Further Insight On Zanzibar

Zanzibar is very combinable with a safari in East Africa and tends to be an ideal beach bolt on to safaris in Tanzania and Kenya.

Zanzibar holidays offer a real mix of accommodation choices with many of our favourites being the smaller boutique lodges offering a true Zanzibari experience. However, there are one or two resort-style hotels that offer a wider choice of activities and are often more suitable for families.

The archipelago’s turquoise seas are as stunning below as above the water line allowing for some magnificent diving. Manta rays, green turtles, hawksbill plus barracudas add to the array of colour with opportunities for wall dives nearer Pemba.

Zanzibar has seen a growth in visitor numbers in recent years but fortunately has remained relatively unspoiled or exploited. To really enjoy your time on the island it is important to find the right style and character of accommodation to suit you. The range is broad from large mainstream resorts to small exclusive hideaways; busy “backpackers” beach huts to private boutique guesthouses.

Click on the links in the right-hand margin for accommodation options or our favourite:

Luxury beach lodges are Matemwe Bungalows, Kilindi, Unguja Beach Lodge or Fumba Beach Lodge.

Lower cost beach guesthouses but still offering something special are Pongwe Beach, Kasha Boutique, Matemwe Beach, Shooting Star or Echo Beach.

Cool places to stay in Stone Town are Beyt Al Chai, 236 Hurumzi, Swahili House or Serena Inn.

Ultimate exclusivity at Mnemba Island.

Or if you want a resort look at: Barraza, Breezes Beach Club, Blue Bay or Ras Nungwi.

Many thanks for a truly great holiday! Nyerere National Park was a great success as we saw the wild dogs on 2 occasions and some great lion kills. In fact we saw a pride of 10 lion including cubs within 10 mins of landing in the Nyerere National Park! Zanzibar was wonderful! The sunshine hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely.

Andrew Morton

The welcome and kindness and generosity we have received, in all of our camps and stops has been tremendous. Although we have both travelled a lot over our years together, we both agree this holiday has been outstanding, and one of the best experiences of our lives.

Tanzania Northern Parks & Zanzibar, August 2019

Thank you for organising a fabulous holiday for us – memories of which will last a lifetime. We have arrived back completely awed by Tanzania and Zanzibar. We saw the all the wildlife we could possibly wish to see. Our driver was charming and looked after us brilliantly. Lodges were excellent and food fantastic.

This has been a dream for the two of us for over 10 years and Safari & Beach not only delivered, but exceeded all of our expectations. From the first call until the day we departed, nothing has been too big or small for the team at Safari & Beach to help us with – to ensure this was a trip of a lifetime

The best 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar Tours

Price of a 10 day tanzania safari and zanzibar trip.

A 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour starts at about $2,800 per person. Mid-range lodge tours start at $3,800 per person whilst luxury tours start at around $5,000 per person. There are many factors determining the price of a 10 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach combo trip.

Safari combo packages to Zanzibar and Tanzania span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 10 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is 10 days safari in tanzania and zanzibar sufficient.

10 days is plenty of time to see and experience the thrills of a Tanzania safari in the Serengeti, whilst leaving enough time to explore the beaches, sights and smells of the historic Stone Town in Zanzibar.

The number of days required to effectively complete a combined safari and beach combo trip can range from anywhere between 1-2 weeks, depending on the visitor’s time and budget.

Each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. In Tanzania, a safari here is like nowhere else in the world, with a reputation for prime game viewing, the surreal Serengeti plains, luxury lodges, stunning beaches and of course, the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, visitors will be delighted with their trip here.

Accommodation offered on a 10 days Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible Zanzibar and Tanzania landscapes and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation Africa has to offer. The accommodation offered on safari and beach combination trips is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges, there’s something for everyone here. Guests can also go fishing, walking or hot-air ballooning before enjoying an outdoor bath and sundowners and dinner in the bush.

Must do on a 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip

The most popular option for a 10 days Tanzania safari is the world renowned Serengeti National Park . A popular honeymoon destination and documentary location in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti plains are home to the world’s largest movement of animals including the Big 5, often called the “Great Migration.”

It’s also one of the oldest and most scientifically significant ecosystems on the planet. Its weather patterns, fauna and flora are believed to have changed very little over a million years, giving the area a prehistoric feel.

The landscape of the Serengeti Plain is also extremely varied, ranging from savannah, to hilly woodlands, to open grasslands. Apart from rhinos and hunting dogs, visitors will readily see every species of African savanna mammal within the Serengeti.

Whilst in Zanzibar, a trip to one of their famous beaches is of course essential! Pamunda Island is a small island off the beaten track is a haven for stunning sandy beaches, turquoise waters and small coves, perfect for beach walks and water based activities.

Whilst the capital of Zanzibar is Stone Town, a historic old part of the capital of Zanzibar and melting pot of Indian, European, Arab and Swahili cultures. Stone Town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a rich and storied past, perfect for visitors to wander around.

Animals on a Tanzania safari?

You’ll find just about everything in the Tanzania safari! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas and hippos.

Tanzania contains the highest concentration of lions in the world with over 3,000 of them found in the Serengeti alone and about 1.5 million wildebeests, in addition to wildebeest, gazelle, giraffes, black rhinos. A view of these huge wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

If you enjoy driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 5 day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.

The Serengeti and the crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. A 5 day trip to Ruaha or Selous in the south can also be very productive where you’ll see lions, wild dogs, antelopes and kudu.

How much money do I need for a 10 day Zanzibar Tanzania safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $320 for a Zanzibar Tanzania safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Combination safaris in Zanzibar and Tanzania can be more expensive due to the higher costs of accommodation, transport and food.

What animals will I see on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar safari tour?

Visitors on a 10 day Tanzania Zanzibar combination safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania tour?

The best time to go on a 10 day Tanzania safari is from June to October when there’s practically no rain and daytime temperatures are not too hot. With an overall moderate climate, Zanzibar and Tanzania however are considered a great year-round safari and beach destination.

Customizable Itinerary

Arusha - relaxation after arrival.

Keep your eyes peeled as you fly over African savannahs and land into Kilimmanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania. The inimitable landscapes of East Africa await and their sheer size is breathtaking from above. You'll be met at the airport and transferred to your first beautiful lodge. Fragrantly situated in a rolling coffee plantation, the lodge offers a home away from home but also a glimpse into exotic Africa. Monkeys sometimes swing through the grounds and the coffee can't get any fresher.

What's Included:

Lake Manyara - Unique Safari at Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara's flying residents provide a noisy start to your safari experience. Over 300 individual bird species can be spotted in the park, but it's the raucous hornbills that try to dominate the soundtrack. After breakfast you'll have a short drive to Lake Manyara National Park, where the hornbills aren't the only birds vying for your attention. Thousands of flamingos wade in the shallows of the lake, forming a pink blanket that's the centerpiece of this national park. They're joined in the water by large pods of hippos, the playful beasts resting from the sun or rolling around the muddy embankments.

Lake Manyara offers an ideal first African safari. It offers an eclectic mix of animals, but the winding woodlands ensure that you rarely see any other safari trucks. By the lake, and in the grassy clearings, you'll get your first glimpses of Africa's largest mammals. Buffalos return your stare, their bushy frames usually providing tick one on your Big Five list. African elephant bulls wander alone, graceful creatures that can be distinguished from Asian elephants by their larger size and ears. Even from a distance you can see that their ears are shaped like a map of Africa. Giraffes silently munch on the high trees, the most elegant of creatures adding their own unique colors to Lake Manyara.

In the clearings these great mammals are easy to spot, but in the thick forest there is also a remarkable concentration of wildlife. You'll be immersed in this animal world as you spend two nights deep within the mahogany forest. This intimate experience will bring the wildlife to you. Listen to bird song from your enchanting treehouse, watch baboons troop past from the balcony, and savor the chattering of bush babies and monkeys in the trees. Sumptuous meals and local drinks are included as are game drives in the park. You'll have a long afternoon game drive on day two before morning and afternoon game drives on day three.

Stealthily resting in the trees is another of Lake Manyara's unique residents. In the dense forest the safari truck stops. The engine is cut off. Your guide is pointing, but as you scour the trees with binoculars you can't find what he's so excited about. A quick movement almost makes you jump. Was that? Was it? It's a lion's tale, swinging from a branch. You definitely don't need the binoculars, this lion is just meters away, and it's been watching you the whole time. Unique to Lake Manyara and Tarangire, these graceful tree climbing lions are the highlight of a safari here. If you're lucky you'll also get glimpse of the other predators that hide in these trees: leopards and cheetah.

Tarangire National Park - Giant Elephant Herds

There are no boring journeys in northern Tanzania. You'll do a game drive en route to Tarangire National Park, spotting the diverse assortment of animals that wander between Lake Manyara and Tarangire. Impalas and wildebeest stand impassively as you drive past, while elephant herds can be seen around the fringes of Tarangire. Once inside the park their numbers grow, great herds, 300 strong, providing a surreal viewing experience. From a distance it's their size that's impressive. But admire them from up close and the herd teems with charming interactions. Babies test their boundaries under a mother's watchful eye. Youngsters are getting used to their power, comically chasing warthogs away from water holes. Large males dictate the herd's movements, leading their family across a landscape that's dotted with spectacular baobab trees.

Nestled into a secluded area of Tarangire, settle into your luxury tent that is lifted on stilts and surround an enormous baobab tree. A stunning infinity swimming pool overlooks a water hole, guests and mammals watching each other as they enjoy water for very different reasons. From the lodge verandah, a vast savannah offers prime wildlife viewing. Zebra herds wander past, each set of black and white stripes as unique as a person's fingerprints. Waterbuck and giraffe can be spotted on the horizon, and on a long game drive you'll be getting much closer to these gracious mammals. Lions lurk in the baobab trees, elephants cover the trail, while the sight of a bat eared fox reveals one of the park's rare residents. During the night the sound of rustling perforates through the thick canvas tents. Lying in large double beds you wonder what it could be. A set of animal footprints will reveal the culprit in the morning.

Ngorongoro - Ngorongoro Crater

A scenic road winds towards the Ngorongoro Crater rim, mischievous baboons watching the road as you ascend through a verdant forest. Even by East Africa's lofty standards, this inactive volcano is a freak of nature. Known as Africa's “Garden of Eden,” the Ngorongoro crater floor is home to a permanent population of 30,000 mammals. But from above it's a bird that catches the eye, innumerable flamingos turning the lake pink, their shocking color juxtaposed against the rich green landscape.

On day five your afternoon isn't scheduled, and some might enjoy savoring the view and relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of your lodge. This is one of Tanzania's most sublime lodges, and it immaculately blends local Maasai tradition with modern luxury. A butler quietly caters to all your needs while Maasai warriors ensure no wildlife gets too close. From your intimate wooden deck you can watch the Ngorongoro procession. First a small herd of zebra descends into the crater. Then a large bull elephant. Now three Maasai herdsmen carrying spears. On this relaxed afternoon, others might prefer walking along the crater rim or making a visit to a local Maasai village. Whatever you choose, it's an afternoon indulging in a world that hasn't changed for hundreds of years.

Ngorongoro - The Big Five in One Day

Anticipation hangs in the air as the first blades of light tinge the morning sky. Descending the steep crater slopes you head into the world's largest intact caldera for a full day on safari. An eerie silence accompanies the fading mist, and the crater's residents are on full alert. Morning time offers ideal hunting conditions and lion prides are roaming through the crater, considering what's going to be on the breakfast menu. Perhaps a waterbuck that's hiding in the Lerai forest, or an old Thompson's gazelle that stands lonely and fearful. No, this lion pride is after a feast. A common eland usually weighs over half a ton and their distinctly straight horns provide a dangerous defense. But the proliferation of lions in the crater is partly explained by their superior hunting skills. It's extremely rare to visit Ngorongoro Crater and not see at least a couple of lion prides. They could be lazing in the shade, their stomach's full and their glorious manes just meters from the safari truck. Or you could have front row seats as they stalk and pounce on prey.

Nowhere else in the world can match Ngorongoro Crater's sheer concentration of wildlife. Six different habitats provide havens for a distinct cast of residents. In the forest you'll find some of Africa's largest elephants. Beside a lake you can stop for a picnic lunch and admire hippos and many thirsty antelopes. Out on the grassy savannah watch hyenas search for an easy meal. Then the ferocious horns of a buffalo give a clue as to why they're regarded as the most dangerous of the Big Five. With good luck you'll also spot leopards, the elegant cats silently creeping out of the trees. Many times it's difficult to know which way to look. The crater walls encase a landscape that can be easily scanned and admired with binoculars. Have a look, spot something new, and then slowly approach it for prime viewing.

Over a roaring evening fire you call the day's events, struggling to remember each of the unique sightings from the crater floor. Yet there is one that will always linger in the memory. A pair of black rhino slowly plods through the grass, their telltale horns proudly pointing skyward. Critically endangered, there are only around 5,000 of these majestic animals left in the wild. As they come near the safari truck there are shrieks of excitement. Shaking hands fumble with the camera. Eyes are wide open and fixated. Then silence descends over the safari truck as everyone serenely watches the rhinos wander past. Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the few places in the world where you can see the entire Big Five in just one game drive. Hopefully, the rhinos will have completed the set.

Serengeti National Park - Stunning Safari in the Famous Serengeti

From the enclosed haven of Ngorongoro you head onto the endless grass plains of the Serengeti. Whereas Ngorongoro is compact and concentrated, the Serengeti is vast and wild. These plains are home to the Great Migration, and during the early months of the year, your accommodation will be surrounded by giant herds of zebra, Thompson's gazelle and wildebeest. Over 2 million wildebeest migrate around the Serengeti, and the size of these herds is often unbelievable. They cover the grass, turning the plains into a great patchwork quilt of hoofs and swirling dust. From a distance it's a staggering sight, tens of thousands grouped together for safety. A closer inspection reveals that there are perhaps hundreds of thousands in just one herd. It's a staggering sight, and it gets better from up close. Baby wildebeest are carefully guarded, a cheetah accelerates and pounces on a lame male, while a sudden fearful jump causes half the herd to blindly panic.

After leaving Ngorongoro Crater you'll first stop at Olduvai Gorge, an area which holds an integral key to human evolution. Fossils and tools indicate that this site was occupied by Homo habilis and Homo erectus, and the two million years of history in this gorge offer a humbling interruption to the wildlife viewing. This was where early man developed and without Olduvai Gorge perhaps none of us would be here today. Kusini has a secluded and remote location in the Serengeti, offering idyllic vistas and private game viewing. While parts of the Serengeti can get crowded with safari trucks, at Kusini you won't have anything on four wheels to scar your photographs. Don't worry if you're not arriving during the Great Migration, the Serengeti is a spectacular sight at all times of year.

Flat landscape and clean air offer exceptional visibility across the plains, meaning that the Serengeti's unique life is easily viewable from your balcony. Three giraffe necks stand out against the horizon, while the size of elephant and buffalo make them easy to spot from a distance. Klipspringer emerge from the nearby woodland, while zebra and Thompson's gazelle pass by so frequently you barely turn your head. At nighttime the action continues, although it’s often the sounds rather than the sights that alert you to something meandering past the camp.

These plains offer impeccable hunting conditions. Leopards and cheetahs join the lion prides, an abundance of big cats all finding easy meals in this plentiful landscape. With solemn precision a leopard dips his neck and blends into the grass. It's waiting. Its actions are calculated and careful. Watch too many wildlife documentaries and you'll be forgiven for thinking that a hunt lasts just a couple of furious minutes. Out in the Serengeti there's a good chance of watching how it really unfolds, including the drawn out skillful approach, the brief shock of the unsuspecting herd, and then the sudden ferocity of an attack.

Day  9 - 12

Bwejuu-Paje Beach - Serenity of Zanzibar Island

After seven days on safari, the final part of your vacation reveals another of Tanzania's unique wonders. For over 1,000 years Zanzibar has ignited the imagination of travelers. Pristine white sand is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, fringed by postcard perfect palm trees. The island offers a soporific loop of beach perfection, the gentle waves and mellow atmosphere enough to lull anyone into hibernation. Time becomes irrelevant as you settle into Zanzibar's beachside rhythm, each day offering a slow blend of relaxing, swimming, reading, and indulging in your sumptuous surroundings.

You'll fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, where you'll be met and driven to your luxurious accommodations. You will be staying on the quiet Bwejuu- Paje Beach, a strip of sand that Conde Nest Traveler Magazine named as one of top thirty beaches in the world.  Your five night stay is on an all-inclusive basis in a villa. Decorated in a boutique style that evokes Zanzibar's rich heritage, your villa and resort offers unrivaled levels of intimacy and exclusivity on the island. Your 193 square meter villa has a large private terrace and plunge pool as well as two bathrooms and a large living area.

On Zanzibar Island it's easy to unwind and do nothing. But this island has fascinated visitors for more reasons than just the beach. Out in the ocean, beneath the water, a tropical collection of fish dance for anybody out snorkeling or diving. Pungent smells take people on a fragrant journey through the island's unique spice farms. Prison Island doesn't sound appealing. It was once used to house rebellious slaves and witnessing the remains of the prison is both poignant and harrowing. But the main attraction today is the endangered Albadra giant tortoises that wander along the sand.

Every stay in Zanzibar should include a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Stone Town. Haphazard streets create a disorientating labyrinth that takes you on an atmospheric journey through the past and present. Intricate wooden doors reveal homes with a rich past, old men push carts laden with oranges, while the smell of fried goat wafts through the luring alleyways. On one corner stands a Hindu Temple. Nearby, the simplicity of the Malindi Mosque has a calming effect. Walk around another corner and admire the 19th century Cathedral of St Joseph, Zanzibar proving how different cultures can peacefully coexist.

Stone Town - Depart for Home

In the morning, your private transfer will take you to the airport in Stone Town. Persian baths, Portuguese architecture, British colonial buildings, rich Islamic courtyards, and Indian influences continue to decorate the island capital. Wandering through Stone Town is an ode to the successful integration of disparate styles. Yet it's the modern impressions that often enchant the most; the harmonic call to prayer from the town's mosques, local men crowding round a game of dominos, boisterous cafes full of chatter and sweet glasses of tea. You will arrive at Zanzibar International Airport with plenty of time to check-in to your flight home.

Jozani forest: Monkeys, wildlife & other wonders in Zanzibar

Red colobus monkey portrait, Jozani forest, Zanzibar

Jozani Forest, located in East Zanzibar , is an untouched and preserved area of forest ( shamba in Swahili). It is a popular destination for tourists, especially those on their way to the beautiful East Coast beaches of Paje and Jambiani.

The forest forms part of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park , the only national park on the island of Zanzibar.

This fascinating destination has plenty to see, including the famous endemic red colobus monkeys . However, they’re not the only species to call this place home.

The forest supports a myriad of African animals . Here, you can marvel at different monkey species climbing along the branches of towering trees.

Spot rare antelope gracefully roaming around in the lush vegetation. As you venture through the forest, there’s also an array of plant and tree species to admire.

To help prepare for your adventure, this guide highlights the best times to visit , how to get there , what to see , and other essential tips. So let’s start planning your serene escape to Zanzibar!

Best Time to Visit Jozani Forest

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park main entrance gate sign

You can explore Jozani Forest all year round. It’s open to visitors daily from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm . While you can visit throughout the year, it’s best to go during Zanzibar’s dry season , between June and September.

Nature walks can be challenging in the wet season due to the substantial rainfall and slippery trails.

If you plan your visit during the warmer months, enjoy the pleasant weather and relax on one of the stunning beaches in Zanzibar .

Tip : Check out the best times to visit Tanzania for a perfectly timed trip.

How to Get to Jozani Forest, Zanzibar

Before you can meet red colobus monkeys in Zanzibar’s Jozani Forest, you’ll need to know how to get there .

Fortunately, Jozani is easily accessible from most parts of Zanzibar. It’s roughly a 30-minute drive from the capital city, Stone Town .

You can take a taxi , arrange a private driver , or hire a car or scooter to get to the park. If you want to skip the logistics, consider booking an organized tour that includes transportation.

You can also travel by dala dala , which are public minibuses. The downside of this is that there is no fixed schedule. So you can’t pre-book tickets and might have to wait, as the buses depart when they are full.

What to See in Jozani Forest: Red Monkeys in Zanzibar & More

Upon arrival at Jozani Forest, you will be introduced to your guide , who will show you around the area on foot and also provide you with lots of relevant information and facts about the park and its wildlife inhabitants.

As well as the forest being a beautiful and amazing place to visit in terms of its surroundings, there is also the appeal of the wildlife which exists there, the most famous of which is the red colobus monkey – native to Zanzibar .

You can take your time to observe their habits and watch how they eat, climb, and even how the younger monkeys play and pretend to fight with each other.

As you explore Jozani, your senses will be awakened . Your nose will pick up natural scents, your ears the sounds of the forest, and your eyes will be spoiled for choice with so much wildlife and vibrant shrubbery.

Jozani Forest Animals

Monkeys may be the first animals that come to mind, but Zanzibar wildlife is diverse. These adorable primates aren’t the only animals in Jozani Forest.

Here, you can admire diverse fauna and rare species like the Kassina Jozani frog and Aders’s duiker .

Below are some fascinating creatures you may encounter during your trip.

Zanzibar red colobus monkey

Two curious red colobus monkeys up in a tree

You might already know that the endangered red colobus monkey is one of the most famous residents of Jozani Forest. Sadly, their population is declining, with less than 2000 individuals remaining.

You won’t miss these cute primates with their striking appearance. However, it’s worth noting that the looks of each species of red colobus monkey differ slightly.

The Zanzibar red colobus monkey’s fur ranges from dark red to black , with a black stripe running along its shoulders and arms.

These Zanzibar monkeys have distinct black faces with long white hair and a notable pink mark on their lips and nose. They have a lighter underside and a long tail.

Bird species

If you’re a birder, prepare for a treat! Jozani Forest is home to numerous bird species, including migratory and endemic varieties .

These beautiful African birds come in all shapes and sizes, from the colourful Fischer’s turaco to the little greenbul .

Other species include the African palm swift , cattle egret , barn owl , red-eyed dove , and the African goshawk .

As you stroll through the forest, take a moment to appreciate the melodious calls. Witness these winged creatures soar above you, and snap a few photos to capture the moment.

Butterflies

Jozani Forest is teeming with fluttering beauties that are truly a feast for the senses. Species like the African monarch – pictured above – fly through the forest with their delicate, colorful wings, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.

With an array of butterfly and bird species, it’s a haven for birders and nature enthusiasts, so be sure to bring your binoculars along .

If you want to see more butterflies, make your way to the Zanzibar Butterfly Center . Here you can admire hundreds of endemic butterflies .

The rare (and endangered) Aders’s duiker in Zanzibar's Jozani forest

Are you hoping to see some African animals with horns ? Well, you’ll be happy to know that there are several elegant African antelope in Jozani Forest.

The Aders’s duiker is one of the incredible species residing in the area.

This forest-dwelling duiker is a rare creature with a petite, reddish-brown body . They stand around 30 cm at the shoulder, boasting a pointed muzzle and small , simple horns .

The Aders’s duiker is quite shy , so don’t expect them to come up to you and say hi.

But you may get lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them during your visit. Keep an eye out for antelope roaming around or hiding in the bushes.

You may also see the unique suni antelope in the forest. This exquisite animal is one of the smallest antelope in Africa .

Tip : If you want to learn more about minute horned animals, check out these facts about the dik-dik .

Diverse reptiles

Lizard on the forest floor, Jozani

Ready for a rendez-vous with reptiles? In Jozani Forest, there are chameleons , rare lizard species , venomous African snakes , and other creatures deep in the rainforest.

While there are poisonous snakes like green and black mambas , don’t fret, as these serpents typically prefer to stay in the dense forest. So, the further you walk, the higher your chances are of seeing them.

Now, on to the more harmless critters. You may spot lizards , geckos , tortoises , and chameleons . Watch how the chameleon seamlessly blends with its surroundings, rotating its eyes as the rest of its body remains still.

It’s truly impressive!

As the ocean surrounds Jozani Forest, it’s also an excellent spot to admire sea turtles . You can learn more about these mesmerizing animals at the Jozani Sea Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary.

Tip : If you’re wondering what the main differences between these two shelled creatures are, check out some interesting facts on the turtle vs. tortoise .

What to Wear When Visiting Jozani Monkey Forest, Zanzibar

How do you dress when touring Jozani? Of course, you want to be comfortable , especially when it comes to your footwear. Here are a few clothing items and accessories to pack:

  • Lightweight clothing – long-sleeved tops and full-length pants are great options. When deciding what to wear, it’s best to stick to strong natural fabrics like cotton, linen, hemp, and wool.
  • Well-fitting walking shoes – sneakers and waterproof footwear is preferable.
  • A hat or cap , sunscreen , and sunglasses – provide defense against the sun’s rays.
  • A water bottle – it’s best to keep hydrated during your adventure.
  • Insect repellent – this comes in handy to ward off bugs.
  • Camera equipment – don’t forget to capture the stunning sights and memorable moments.

When visiting Stone Town and other villages, it’s best to dress modestly to respect the Islamic culture.

Long skirts , maxi dresses , loose-fitting pants , and scarves are excellent options for appropriate attire. The scarf comes in handy to drape over your shoulders when heading out.

Remember, it’s respectful to cover from the shoulder to the knee and avoid clothing that exposes your chest, midriff, and thighs.

Tip : For more outfit inspiration and gear recommendations, check out this article on safari clothing .
