For catastrophic coverage, SFM recommends purchasing insurance or joining a Healthcare Sharing Ministry. DPC members usually are able to choose higher deductible coverage, ultimately saving significantly on healthcare costs.

Why Direct Primary Care?

Looking for a better health care option? We can help. Dr. Story takes a few minutes to explain why Direct Primary Care could be a game changer for your family or business.

"It's like having a doctor in the family"

Our patients say..., "exactly what i needed", "never felt more confident".

"I had the opportunity of being one of Dr. McCabe's first patients.  He and the office staff were very professional, thorough, compassionate, and quickly helped make referrals.  I was impressed by his personal follow up text and phone calls to check on me.  Story Family Medicine is exactly what I needed at a time when I changed to a higher deductible insurance.  Now I am recommending them to my friends and family." Rhonda

"I can’t believe that this model isn’t more prevalent! We are saving hundreds a month on insurance and have so much more access to medical care. I love not having to evaluate whether it’s worth it to take my children to the doctor. Balancing your child’s health against your finances feels terrible and I no longer have to do it! Dr Story and Jenny are so prompt and in the first month have already helped us with well child checks, minor infections and emergency issues. They are kind, efficient and competent. I have never felt more confident in my medical coverage than I do now. No wondering if I am going to get a bill in three months, no waiting rooms and no barriers to actually speaking with my doctor." Caitlin

"Warm, caring, and capable"

"Went with my son to Dr. Story for his routine physical exam which is required for sports eligibility. Dr. Story was remarkably thorough yet without being fussy. He also displayed a wonderful combination of professionalism and personalized interest and care. I have experienced routine doctor visits that seemed to be like passing through an assembly line, but this experience with Dr. Story stood out in stark contrast. Warm, caring, and capable." Chris

Women and Weight: 4 Ways to Think Beyond BMI

The focus on bmi can cause us to forget other ways to consider health..

Posted June 22, 2024 | Reviewed by Ray Parker

  • What Is Body Image?
  • Find counselling to improve body image
  • A medicalized approach to understanding weight uses BMI as a measure of health.
  • There are other ways to think about health and weight.
  • You can advocate for yourself by asking your doctor to consider health measures other than BMI.

Image from Freepik

If you’ve been to the doctor recently, you’ve likely received one of those lengthy printouts summarizing your visit, including providing detailed information on your weight and the corresponding body mass index (BMI) percentage, a number that physicians use to assess individual nutritional and health status 1 . While it continues to be a part of the accepted medical canon, the utility of using BMI as a measure of health has been questioned in recent years due to variations in individual body frame, height, and muscle mass 2 . To help you prepare for your next visit, here are a few other ways to think about the connection between weight and health that go beyond BMI.

1. Adopt a "health at any size" perspective

Health at any size is a perspective that supports enhancing the health of all people, regardless of body size or weight 3 . It is an inclusive approach to understanding health that values the person in their social, psychological, and environmental context. Most importantly, it does not support assumptions about a person’s size or BMI as an absolute measure of overall health. How do we talk about this perspective with our doctors, who likely have not been exposed to this idea within the medical model? One way to do this is to talk with your doctor about what health at any size means and how you are applying it to your life. Then, invite them to support you in examining other areas of whole-person health they consider important outside of just BMI.

2. Learn about the connection between metabolic health and weight

Another way to think outside the BMI framework is to understand the relationship between metabolic health and weight. Measures of your metabolic health include things like your blood pressure, cholesterol (HDL and LDL), triglycerides, and blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that up to 40% of individuals who meet the current criteria for obesity are metabolically healthy, that is, have levels of these metabolic health factors that are within the normal range 4 . Encourage your doctor or other healthcare staff to review your labs and discuss them with you in order to understand how your metabolic health is connected to your weight.

3. Keep in mind the weight-related changes that come with age

With age comes wisdom and sometimes more weight. Due to a decline in physical activity as we age, the loss of muscle mass, and things like childbirth and menopause , weight gain can increase as women age. In fact, even within significantly active populations, weight gain has been found to increase through middle age, more so in women than in men 5 . This isn’t to say that we should give up on exercise or living a healthy lifestyle, but it does help to maintain an awareness of what’s within our control. Don’t be so hard on your aging body.

4. Tune in to your relationship with food

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, understanding our relationship with food can give us a key understanding of how we view ourselves in terms of our weight and the body image messaging we have received over the course of our lives. Rather than measuring our worth based upon a number, whether it is BMI or the number on the scale, we would do so by being kinder to ourselves. This means recognizing when we have placed unnecessary moral judgments on foods (‘good and bad’ foods) as well as when we have fallen into marketing schemes that tell us certain foods are ‘clean,’ implying that what we’re eating is ‘dirty’—not a good feeling 6 . Having a healthier relationship with food is a key element in achieving overall health, one that we can all strive for regardless of BMI.

Urgent care doctor visiting a patient at home

Perth’s highest quality home visit urgent care doctor service

What to expect from a weekend Dr visit

Our service is fully operational throughout the after hours period including at weekends. You can expect the same high quality care patients have come to expect from us whatever day of the week you book with our service. Night Doctor prioritises high quality of care and customer service and has a reputation for setting a new standard in after hours home visit care. Some of the things that set us apart are:

Quality practice accreditation logo

  • No rushed consultations. Our doctors spend the time needed to properly assess your condition and provide reassurance.
  • Receive notifications of arrival time and unexpected delays
  • Honesty with estimated arrival times. If we’re busy, we will be upfront about this.
  • Our doctors have experience in the Australian healthcare system and meet strict selection criteria
  • Respected amongst Perth’s medical community as Perth’s leading after hours home visit service
  • Your doctor calls your before attending to assess your condition and offer reassurance

If you have not heard of Night Doctor or used our service before, we encourage you to try our service to experience the difference.

How do I see a doctor after hours?

Requesting a home visit from Night Doctor is simple. Call 1300 644 483 and speak to our friendly receptionist who will get you booked in. Speak to our receptionist straight away. We do not keep you on hold as we know this is a frustrating experience, especially when you are unwell.

How it works

Your doctor will call you before attending to check on your condition and offer initial treatment advice. If you condition requires it, you will be provided starter medications at no cost. Following you visit, your doctor will forward their consultation notes to your regular GP to keep them in the loop and ensure continuity of care.

Are we open Sunday?

If you’re looking for a doctor open Sunday in Perth, look no further. We open for bookings on Saturday at midday and continue operations through the entire weekend.

Weekend operating hours

CALL TO BOOK 1300 644 483

Night Doctor service area map

See which areas we service .

When should I call a doctor on the weekend?

If you have a medical problem that cannot wait for a review by your regular GP the following week, we are here to help. If you are not sure whether you are safe to wait to see your regular GP, then you can book with our service and discuss your condition with one of our doctors, who will call you before attending for a home visit. There is no cost to this phone consultation.

Common conditions our weekend doctors review

For non-urgent medical problems such as chronic health conditions, you are best booking an appointment to see your regular GP. The exception to this is if you have an exacerbation of your chronic condition that requires more urgent attention. For any life-threatening conditions, you should attend your nearest Emergency Department or call 000.

Is Night Dr open Public Holidays?

Yes. Night Doctor operates on all Public Holidays providing care to patients when their regular GP is closed. We recommend that you call to book early as with very limited availability of other medical services, we have a high demand for our doctors on public holidays.

Can doctors come to your home?

Night Doctor is a home visit service meaning our doctors attend you home for your consultation. We do not operate any clinics. Waiting in your home for a doctor at the weekend is a much better alternative than waiting in the local Emergency Department and because your doctor calls you before attending, you can rest assured that you are safe to wait.

Do weekend doctors give prescriptions?

Our doctors carry a large selection of free starter medications to get your treatment started. Where indicated, you will be provided with a prescription which you can fill at you convenience. To find a weekend pharmacy open nearby, use our pharmacy locator .

We bulk bill all patients who have DVA Gold cover or who live in a disability care home or nursing home. For all other patients there is a small out-of-pocket fee. Our Saturday and Sunday GP fees are the same as during the week. Higher fees apply on public holidays. Use the selector to see what fees apply for your visit or see our fees page or call to speak with our receptionist for more information. We do not carry or accept cash. We do accept split payments using a debit or credit card.

Choose your health cover category above to learn about any fees that may apply to your Night Doctor visit.

Home Visit rates

** A $20 surcharge applies on weekends, and a $40 surcharge on public holidays.

Medicare will pay for most of the cost of your visit. Medicare requires us to take the gap payment + the Medicare rebate upfront. You will be issued a receipt to allow you to claim your rebate back from Medicare. Speak to our receptionist to learn more.

Telehealth rates

The fee for telehealth depends on the length of the consultation and the start time of the consultation.

Consultation starting before 11pm:

**Some patients will be eligible to claim Medicare rebates for Telehealth performed by Night Doctor. Please see this FAQ for more information.

Consultation starting after 11pm:

Urgent conditions.

After 11pm there is a Medicare rebate for all patients with urgent conditions. In order to access this rebate Medicare requires the Doctor to justify that you have an urgent condition (i.e your condition is at risk of deteriorating before 8am the next morning). The consultation must take place over a video call rather than a standard phone call.

The rebate is significantly higher than for the standard rebates. So while the total fee you pay is higher your rebate is also higher by the same amount and the out of pocket gap amount is unchanged.

Urgent Telehealth Video consult after 11pm: $210.75

Non-urgent conditions

If the Doctor cannot justify to Medicare that your condition is at risk of deterioration before 8am, they cannot charge the urgent item and the fees for consultations before 11pm will apply instead.

Determining what is urgent is difficult, as very little guidance is provided by Medicare. Our receptionists can run your issue past the doctor prior to your consultation and can let you know if you will be bulk billed or a fee will apply.

We understand this situation is not ideal but we are trying to do the best we can to help patients and operate within Medicare billing guidelines.

Medicare will pay for most of the cost of your visit. Medicare requires us to take the gap payment + the Medicare rebate upfront. You will be issued a receipt to allow you to claim your rebate back from Medicare. Speak to our receptionist to learn more. Patients must show a valid commonwealth concession card to the doctor on their arrival to be eligible for concession rates. Eligible cards are: a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card issued by either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Urgent Telehealth Video consult after 11pm: $200.75

You must show a valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) card to the doctor on their arrival to be eligible for OSHC rates. You will be charged 'No Health Cover' rates if you do not have a valid card.

**Some patients will be eligible to claim a rebate for Telehealth performed by Night Doctor. Please see this FAQ for more information. The same criteria as for Medicare is used for Overseas Students Health Cover claims.

Urgent Telehealth Video consult after 11pm: $198.20

Medicare will pay for most of the cost of the visit. Medicare requires us to take the gap payment + the Medicare rebate upfront. A receipt will be issued to allow the carer to claim the rebate back from Medicare. Speak to our receptionist to learn more.

Home visit rates

We will issue overseas travellers with a receipt to allow you to claim the visit fee back from your insurer.

A fee of $159 is payable for patients with no health cover.

How to safely clean your ears, according to doctors

Doctors warn that using a cotton swab to clean out ear canals can cause irritation and even hearing loss.

We don’t always have the answers, but we have some people on speed dial who do — which is why we present to you our series FYI where we have experts explain if lip balm is actually bad , how often you should wash your hair and more.

Most body parts are fairly easy to keep clean — just rub on some soap and rinse it off. One area that may feel a little trickier? Your ears. As ear wax accumulates, it may be tempting to stick a cotton swab in your canal to clear it out. But the medical experts we spoke to said that can be dangerous and damage your ear canal.

So, how are you supposed to clean your ears? We asked doctors that exact question. Below, they give tips on the safest way to clean your ears, reveal how often you need to do it and discuss what happens if you don’t keep this part of your body clean. Plus, we rounded up a few ear cleaner recommendations based on their guidance.

What is the best way to clean your ears.

Before diving into how to clean your ears, it’s important to go over techniques you should avoid. “It is advised to avoid placing any items inside the ears, such as cotton swabs, since this can cause damage to the canal or even rupture the thin and delicate tympanic membrane, which can lead to hearing loss,” says Dr. Joaquin Villegas , a family medicine physician at UTHealth Houston.  “Cotton swabs can still be used for the cleaning of the outer ear but should not be inserted into the inner ear.” In addition to avoiding cotton swabs, Villegas says you should avoid popular trends like using ear candling and olive oil sprays to clean out wax.

Instead, there are a few other options experts say you can utilize if you feel like wax is building up in your ears. They are:

  • Use a damp cloth: “This is the safest method for most people,” says Dr. Soma Mandal, a board-certified internist at Summit Health in New Providence, New Jersey. Simply dampen a washcloth with warm water and gently clean the outer part of your ear.” It is important not to try to stick the wash cloth in your inner ear, which could cause irritation.
  • Try ear drops: Patients clean their ears with cerumenolytic agents, which help loosen ear wax, says Villegas, who notes that there are many over-the-counter options available. Mandal suggests using these drops for a few days and says the wax will soften enough to come out independently.
  • See a doctor for ear irrigation: If your earwax is built up and impacting your hearing, you may need to see a doctor for help. “A healthcare professional can irrigate the canal, which involves using a syringe to gently pump warm water into the ear,” says Mandal. “The water loosens the earwax, which then drains out with the water.”

How often should you clean your ears?

How often you clean your ears really depends on how quickly cerumen  (the medical term for earwax) builds up — it’s different for everyone. “The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that most people only need to clean their ears every two to four weeks,” says Villegas. “Patients with more cerumen accumulation may sometimes need more frequent cleaning but it should not be a daily occurrence.” Wondering why it’s not a great idea to clean your ears daily? “Too-frequent cleaning can paradoxically lead to higher rates of ear infection since earwax is the body’s natural way of protecting against infections,” adds Villegas.

What happens if you don’t clean your ears?

You know cleaning your ears too frequently is not a great idea, but what happens if you don’t clean them enough? “The biggest risk of not cleaning ears regularly is cerumen impaction, which is partial or complete blockage of the ear canal and can lead to itching, pain and even hearing loss,” says Villegas. In addition, in some cases, excessive earwax can cause dizziness or a sense of the room spinning, says Mandal. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s best to consult with a doctor.
