American Psycho's Ending, Explained

  • American Psycho 's ending has caused much debate between viewers about what is real and what is not.
  • Patrick Bateman may have killed the wrong "Paul Allen" during his mental break.
  • The book and film discuss much deeper themes in the elite business culture of the 1980s.

The cult classic horror film American Psycho garnered a lot of unanswered questions about the true meaning behind it. Was Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) truly an American psycho? Or were all the crimes he had committed in his head? There were moments in American Psycho where Patrick partook in heinous acts of murdering people he deemed unworthy of existence. He killed not only his colleague but a homeless man, a dog, a supposed girlfriend, and sex workers.

His perception of reality began to dwindle when he killed Paul Allen (Jared Leto). Out of jealousy and rage, Patrick kills Paul Allen in his apartment, goes to Paul's apartment, and leaves a voicemail posing as Paul to make it seem he went to London. This was supposed to be a lie, but at the end of the film, when Patrick's guilt begins to overflow, he reveals the truth to his lawyer. But he doesn't believe Patrick because he apparently saw Paul Allen in London. This causes Patrick to stop in his tracks and self-reflect on his entire existence. But with all this in mind, it has left many film viewers puzzled by the film's ambiguity. Did Patrick really kill anyone – specifically, did he kill Paul Allen?

Updated April 18, 2024 by Robert Vaux: American Psycho remains an iconic thriller and a definitive comment on the materialistic culture of the 1980s. Its unreliable narration will always leave open questions and interpretations of its narrative. The article has been updated slightly to conform to CBR's current formatting guidelines, and additional information has been added to expand its content.

Patrick Bateman Does Kill Paul Allen In American Psycho

Christian bale's american psycho inspiration wasn't a slasher - it was tom cruise.

The film's director, Mary Harron , has gone on record vetoing any relations to this film being just a long, overplayed dream sequence. Patrick killed people, but who and how many of these deaths were real is the question. As the film ventures into the narrative, Patrick becomes more and more of an unreliable narrator, and the crimes he committed were to suspend disbelief. During the beginning of the third act, It could be safely assumed he didn't see the words on the ATM, "Feed me a stray cat," shot an elderly woman, or killed many police officers.

After that, however, the question of what he did and didn't do becomes very fuzzy. Which murders are real and which ones are imagined become less important than the simple fact that Bateman can no longer differentiate between his violent fantasies and the real world around him. That ambiguity links his murders — both real and imagined — to the empty 80s materialism around him.

Paul Allen's death is particularly notable because it acts as the film's centerpiece. Bateman lays down newspaper before he arrives, and buttons up a raincoat as he delivers a comically in-depth analysis of Huey Lewis & The News' "Hip to Be Square" playing on the speakers. He hacks Paul up with an ax before the song is finished. That sets into motion a series of events that could potentially cost Patrick his freedom, but also prove that Paul's disappearance is no dream. Paul's family, in fact, did send a detective (Willem Dafoe) to find his whereabouts and questioned Patrick numerous times. So he was actually missing. However, people did see Paul in London, which further backs up Patrick's lie that he was just on a trip. But how can that be the case if Paul was dead?

There are recurring moments throughout the entire film where Patrick and the other yuppies (a young person at a high-ranking job with good fashion style) are mistaken for each other because they all dress and act the same. Wearing the same suits, eyeglasses, similar haircuts, and the same meager and expressive attitudes into wanting to live a languish lifestyle eating at fancy restaurants. So much so, Patrick managed an alibi when the real Marcus Halberstram (Anthony Lemke) had mistaken that he had dinner with him at the same time Paul Allen went missing.

Even Paul's planning calendar said he went to lunch with Marcus, but in reality, he went with Patrick. This was brought to fruition when Patrick confronted his lawyer; he was again mistaken for someone else initially, as the lawyer claimed Patrick Bateman was pathetic. The lawyer had mistaken an unknown man for Paul Allen, and even when Bateman wanted to face the consequences, he was still ignored.

Nothing Truly Matters Inside Of American Psycho

David fincher's the killer is american psycho 2.0.

Patrick Bateman's closing monologue after his failed confession summarizes his livelihood of existence: "There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape, but even after admitting this, there is no catharsis. My punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing."

It doesn't matter what Patrick Bateman has done throughout the film after getting away with murder. No one opened their doors when the sex worker ran up and down the hallways, screaming bloody murder. No one cared that someone was dying — instead, the people living in that building and all over were too consumed by their rich lives. However, what was even more telling was when he returned to Paul Allen's apartment, Patrick found it utterly spotless even though he had kept all the dead bodies there.

It could be assumed that since he's an unreliable narrator, he may have cleaned it up and not recollected it. Still, another more gruesome and believable idea adds to the darkness. When Patrick met the realtor, she appeared to have known about the blood and dead bodies but didn't want anything to do with Patrick. If she had, the apartment price would have dwindled. At the end of the day, that's all that matters in this universe — money, sex appeal, and getting a seat at Dorsia.

When Patrick realized his actions don't have consequences, he unraveled. And when he does confess to his kills, either subtly or not, no one cares because the yuppie culture has displaced people's humanity. Taking note of these crimes would break what people of this time would deem as perfect. But unlike his counterparts, Patrick understands what he's been doing was wrong and that he should be punished for all his crimes, but as the quote states above, it doesn't matter if he confesses or understands the semantics of his wrongdoings. No one cares he's a murderer, which makes him feel at a loss. The purpose of his kills in American Psycho was because he liked it, and he knew it was morally wrong. But since no one cared, his murders became meaningless. Thus, he's at a loss of purpose for his life.

The American Psycho Film And Book Discuss The 'Yuppie' Culture Of The 1980s In Different Ways

Christian bale's american psycho lands comic book adaptation from sumerian.

For the most part, the American Psycho film follows the book in many respects. However, instead of divulging solely into a satire of yuppie culture, the film leans into Patrick's descent into madness. Both versions dive into satirical pieces and comedic undertones, but the book often goes for shock value in its brutal descriptions of Patrick's kills. Instead of focusing on that, the movie concentrates on Patrick's psyche and touches on a concept viewers may struggle with — identity issues. When everyone acts and looks the same, what is the true purpose of life?

That lets it linger on the satirical ideas of consumerism while discussing race, sexism, homelessness, and other controversial topics. Very briefly, the movie touches on all these details but maintains more ideas of who Patrick Bateman was and why his actions led him down this path. It connects him to the audience despite his obvious monstrosity and asks how a society built on status and conspicuous consumption could be expected to produce any other kind of person.

Overall, there are many different interpretations of how the film ended. Patrick Bateman was an unreliable narrator for the entire movie, so it's difficult to discern what was actually happening and what was conjured in his head. Even if he was fantasizing or hallucinating most of it, it doesn't make him any less culpable. He's left in limbo — with a "No Exit" sign in the background of one late shot to underline the point — and unable to free himself from his purgatorial existence. Paul Allen, at least, escaped it: whether because Patrick killed him or because something else prevented his return to their empty shell of upscale New York.
