Direct Line launched in 1985, offering car insurance only. It has since expanded to offer more types of insurance policies, including travel insurance. We’ve looked at what Direct Line’s travel insurance policy includes and the pros and cons of the cover.

Direct line offers three types of travel insurance cover:

  • Single trip cover. A one-off trip lasting up to 90 days.
  • Annual multi-trip cover. A year’s worth of cover for unlimited trips, lasting up to 42 days each.
  • Backpacker cover. Cover for longer trips between three months and 18 months.

Cover for lost, stolen or damaged belongings, and for winter sports, is only available as a paid add-on.

Among other things, you’ll be covered for the following:

  • Emergency medical treatment up to £10,000,000
  • Flight cancellations up to £5,000
  • Legal expenses up to £50,000
  • Personal liability up to £2,000,000
  • Protection for your personal belongings, up to £1,500 (or £300 for a single item)

You can make general claims via the Direct Line website or by calling 0345 246 8680.

For emergency medical claims, call 01252 740 098 .

You’ll initially be asked for your policy number and a brief description of your claim. The claims team will then guide you through the process of completing your claim.

To manage your policy online, click the “My Account” at the top of the Direct Line website.

Direct Line has attracted more than 5,000 reviews on Trustpilot. At the time of writing, its average rating was 4.3 out of 5.

Having only dealt with claims through my pet Insurance I couldn't speak more highly of how quick they deal with and pay back my claims. I have become evangelical about Direct Line, and recommend that all my friends and family switch over immediately. When the neighbour above me caused such substantial water damage in my bathroom and kitchen that I had to move out for six months while both rooms were stripped back to the studs and fully replaced, Direct Line was the *only* straightforward and amazing thing about the process. They were kind, clear, thorough, responsive and everything was simply taken care of. Lorraine Hole was my claim handler, and she could not possibly have been better. I don't just recommend them. I recommend that you drop everything you are doing right now to switch over your home insurance.

Re-newed both cars & home insurance with direct line after many years. Price has increased rather a lot but could have moved to another company for a little less but stayed as we are happy with direct line what is included and more contactable than most other companies. My car was damaged in the Gatwick…

My car was damaged in the Gatwick Airport Fire caused by a Tesla but because of the conspiracy to hush up all electric vehicle fires they refused my claim saying they could not ID the car responsible then when queried they said they were refusing it because it could not be proved that it was casued due to negligence. They also wanted a 61% increase on my renewal. It was not until I refered the matter to the FCA that they then decided to refund my excess & expenses. The case is still being looked into by the FCA

Total wasted time over 4 days nearly 5 hours. its almost impossible to talk to a human being, first one a lady was awaste of space second one"jeff" a star. basically i bought a new hyundai tuscon petrol hybrid advance, and guess what direct line havent heard of it and will not insure it!!!!

Responsive and helpful

The representative listened to me and I felt that they considered my position. It did take a while to have my call answered so I used the call back service which was helpful.

Do not use this company to insure your…

Do not use this company to insure your pet. After 6 years of paying premiums of £180 per month for my pet. In my first claim direct line refused to preauthorise my claim so had to pay the vet upfront and hope and pray they will reimburse me. The vet won’t treat my six year old dog because Direct Line will not state in a preauthorised report they will pay. I have to pay upfront or the vet will not treat my dog. I would not recommend or use this Company ever again! Disgusted and stressed with my whole experience!!!

Easy to check insurance renewal and I made comparisons with other insurance companies -- like for like Direct Line were very good value and competitive. I could have got a much cheaper quote elsewhere but not with the cover and extras i wanted.

Been with direct line for 3 years and just received an email to talk to them before I renew, in which they say they can not renew my insurance because I don’t meet the criteria, I have had no accidents nor even received a parked ticket. They will not tell me why I cannot renew and that was it.

I have multiple policy's with them and because of this i get a discount on the very competitive price when it comes to renewing. They are always very helpful when you call. My car was damaged at a school when the electric gates closed without warning. DL repaired my car without it affecting my NCB due to a very good addition to the policy called ‘fair claim commitment’ as the accident wasn’t my fault. Chita Oblast is similar to Buryatia in the great diversity and beauty of its landscapes. It is, however, far less visited than its western neighbor. Chita Oblast derives much of its importance to Russia from its proximity to China . As such, it has served as a point for international trade, migration, and even war. Today Chita Oblast contains a large Russian military presence — for this reason Chita was a "closed city" during the Soviet era.

Expect that Russian will come in handy in this remote Siberian region.

Chita is the principal arrival point for most visitors, who usually arrive on the Trans-Siberian Railway , although the Baikal-Amur Mainline also cuts through Chita Oblast's more isolated north. Chita is also served by VIM Airlines from Moscow and Bratsk . However, VIM are by far the worst airline in Russia and it is a much better idea to fly Siberian (S7) or Ural Airlines.

The next major stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway are Ulan Ude to the west and Skovorodino and Svobodny to the east. On the Baikal-Amur Mainline : Severobaikalsk to the west and Tynda to the east.
