Two Go Towing

Follow our adventures, cadac safari chef 2 review.

Having been camping for most of our lives, we know that cooking outdoors is a big draw to the holidaying and past time. My parents purchased a Cadac many years ago and we used it to cook everything from the morning breakfast to curries, chilli and BBQs. As soon as we took the plunge to buy our caravan, buying a Cadac was high on our purchase list of must buys. Cadac’s moto is ‘Live the Braai Life’, there products put family at the centre.

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

We felt that the Safari Chef 2 would be the ideal size for the two of us and would also not take up to much room in the caravan when not in use. Soon after getting our caravan we visited the new Motorhome & Campervan Sale at the East of England Showground. Despite the huge range of stalls at the show we weren’t able to find the Cadac Safari 2 for a cheaper price than at Go Outdoors! When buying our Cadac we purchased the quick release connector thinking that this would save having to use a spanner to keep connecting and reconnecting to the gas bottle. Unfortunately if you want to collapse the legs and have them lock in the closed position you cannot use this assessory, something that is very disappointing as you can actually buy the quick release (QR) packaged with the Cadac Safari Chef 2 PRO QR .

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

Having research into others views into the incompatibility of the QR and have found that Cadac have now released a new angled quick release that solves this problem.

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

The Safari Chef 2 is a very versatile piece of camping equipment, all sets come with interchangeable tops including a pot stand, BBQ top, a flat griddle and a pan/dom. The very handy thing is all of this can be put into the carry bag that is also included. The legs of the Safari Chef 2 fold down easily (if you do not use the quick release!)

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

Curries are very popular in the Two Go Towing household, so to allow us to make our favourites we have also purchased the lid for the pod/dom. There are also a number of other accessories that you can purchase including a Pizza stone and small tapas/egg pans.

Choose the correct gas connection

Choose the correct gas connection

A gas barbecue works on a gas bottle, gas cartridges & hose, and pressure regulator. Here we list all options for you.

Connecting your gas barbecue

Do you want to connect a 'Patio' gas barbecue? It is not difficult – it only works on a refillable gas bottle! Depending on the type of gas bottle you want to use (universal gas bottle or a CG bottle), choose the pressure regulator that is suitable for that specific gas bottle. The pressure regulators are available as a normal pressure regulator or as a pressure regulator with leakage protection . The pressure regulator with leakage protection has a so-called "overflow regulator" which automatically switches off the gas supply if the gas hose is damaged and or leaks.

Gas supply camping barbecues

With camping barbecues you have more choices in gas supply, which might make it difficult to choose! These barbecues are often used on the campsite. For many campers it is important to carry as little luggage & weight as possible in the car or caravan, and the more space that can be saved the better. In that case, the heavy, refillable gas bottle is often not ideal. As a specialist in camping barbecues, we like to think along with campers – that’s why we developed the Power Pak. The Power Pak combines the gas supply from several gas cartridges. This creates sufficient gas pressure to allow these appliances to work easily on a gas cartridge.

There are 2 types of Power Paks available:

  • The Dual Power Pak works on 2 gas cartridges (eg the CADAC gas cartridges 500g or 445g) with a universal screw connection (EN417).
  • The Trio Power Pak combines the gas supply of 3x 227g cartridges (eg the CADAC gas cartridge 227g); these are the elongated gas cartridges that are readily available throughout Europe from various brands.

Camper & caravan

Do you have a camper or caravan with an outside connection? You can also use it to connect your barbecue then – all you need is a suitable gas hose. CADAC offers 3 different size gas hoses – 150cm, 300cm and 500cm – which can be used on the outside connection. With the Quick Release you simply click the hose onto the connection of your motorhome or caravan. Just remember that your barbecue must always be within 1.5, 3 or 5 meters of your camper or caravan!

Refillable gas bottle

Do you still have enough space to take a refillable gas bottle with you? Opt for a universal gas bottle or a gas bottle from the Campingaz brand (CG) then! The latter needs a specific CG pressure regulator. The pressure regulators for the refillable gas bottles are available as a normal pressure regulator or as a pressure regulator with leakage protection; the pressure regulator with leakage protection has an "overflow regulator" which automatically switches off the gas supply if the gas hose is damaged and / or leaks. The gas pressure of the gas bottle is measured with the pressure gauge. These pressure regulators therefore offer extra security and safety when using a gas barbecue.

Safari Chef | Gas Supply Options

For the Safari Chef we make the choice less stressful. With this compact barbecue you can choose from an HP and an LP variant.

Safari Chef LP

The is a low pressure appliance (Low Pressure), just like all other CADAC camping barbecues . This means that you connect this barbecue with a gas hose and pressure regulator. Again, you can choose from the following options:

  • Loose gas canisters
  • Refillable gas bottle with pressure regulator
  • External connection of your camper / caravan

Because the Safari Chef is a small device, it uses less gas than, for example, a Carri Chef. This allows the Safari Chef to work fine on a 500g or 445g gas cartridge . The Safari Chef LP can be connected to a separate 500g or 445g gas can with an EN417 pressure regulator for screw cartridges .

Safari Chef LP | CADAC gasbarbecues

Safari Chef HP

HP stands for High Pressure, or it is a high pressure device. The Safari Chef HP works directly on a gas cartridge. You can easily screw this under the device and start barbecuing right away! Do you still want to connect your HP device to a gas bottle? Don’t worry! A special adapter set HP to LP is available to make your Safari Chef HP work on a gas bottle.

We understand that there are so many options that you might get confused. That is why we have listed all the options for you below:

Have We Found The Best Camping Stove? Testing the Cadac

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

So, we wanted to see for ourselves. Would we love them too?

Latest update: December 2021

All our reviews at Campfire Magazine are independent and honest.

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

Why the Cadac?

Which are some of the most-read articles on Campfire Magazine? The reviews of the  Cobb and Lotus Grill . This tells us that people take their outdoor cooking and barbecuing very seriously.

There’s an added incentive in trying  Cadac stoves ..they’re like a less-messy barbecue and can also boil a kettle. Multipurpose is always  right up our street. Final reason? Many gas camping stoves are cheap and nasty affairs and we’d prefer something solid and long-lasting.

Which Cadac should we buy?

These are the portable models of Cadac camping stoves.

OUR TOP PICK

Cadac Safari Chef 2 LP QR

Cadac Safari Chef 2 LP QR

The Safari Chef 2 has folding legs that allow you to stand it on the floor or (folded) on a table. Piezo ignition, lots of accessories and a neat bag. High pressure canister (HP)  or  low pressure gas bottle options too (LP) . 28cm diameter.

The high-pressure Safari Chef 2 is our gas-powered camping stove choice  We thought the  Cadac Safari Chef 2  was the best size for portability and cooking options.

It’s foldable, comes with all the accessories we need and has the option of extras such as a baking stone, wok and more.

The price is reasonable and a stove powered from a refillable gas bottle is more economical  than a throwaway canister and lastly. The stove is also quick to set up and pack away.

We’ve now been using ours for four years and it never lets us down!

Cadac 5650-41-EU Grillo Chef

Cadac 5650-41-EU Grillo Chef

The Grillo Chef 2 has long, but stable, legs and a 38cm diameter cooking area. It takes a hose and gas bottle, has piezo ignition and all packs down neatly (though not as small as some).

The  best model comes with a lid and frying pan too.

Cadac Carri Chef 2

Cadac Carri Chef 2 8910-80-EU Carri Chef 2

The Cadac Carri Chef 2 stands on long legs for cooking without bending (much). It has piezo ignition and adjustable temperature.

The domed top attaches as a windshield. 47cm diameter

Cadac 2 Cook 2 Pro Deluxe QR

Cadac 2 Cook 2 Pro Deluxe QR

Cadac have also brought out a more traditional-looking camping stoves with two burners – the 2 Cook .

The Pro Deluxe is the one to go for because it has piezo ignition, two burners that also take a flat fry plate and a ridged grill plate plus a carry bag.

Testing the Safari Chef

The  Safari Chef  was simple to unpackage and was standing on its little legs within seconds. Within minutes, we’d attached the hose and larger refillable gas cylinder.

This LP (low pressure) version  gives higher cooking temperatures, but because of the gas bottle is more suited to car, campervan and caravan users. The  HP version  (which takes canisters) is probably better for people wanting to keep weight down.

Folded into a small packable piece of cooking kit

The test results

Our LP version  came with a carrybag, a set of basic instructions (no recipes), a bottom deflector and top deflector, a grille, a reversible griddle/frying pan, a lid that doubles as a wok or large pan and a pizza or baking stone.

Our first test was a litre of water, which took eight minutes to boil with a slight wind. A windbreak  makes a difference.

Then it was on to the exciting cooking – crabcakes, a stirfry and a seafood chowder. We used all but the baking stone and found the surfaces easy to cook on and easy to clean. It was fairly simple to control the heat (once we got the hang of the knob) and, although charcoal cooking has its advantages, the speed and lack of smoke was lovely!

Another factor is that many European campsites don’t allow charcoal barbecues these days because of the fire risk. The  Cadac  is more gas stove than barbecue so shouldn’t bring an angry owner rushing to your tent.

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

We use the stove with the legs folded inside when we want to tabletop-cook. You do need to position it so the gas connector sits over the edge of the table. It won’t work with a high-pressure model because the canister sits underneath between the legs.

What we liked

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

  • The pop-out legs are nifty and spring out into place very easily.
  • No charcoal, so things stay cleaner and you’re cooking straight away.
  • Good range of cooking surfaces
  • Good size cooking surface for two people
  • Can stand on the floor or a table
  • Fairly easy to clean, though we didn’t cook any fatty meat/sausages

What could be improved

  • It takes a bit of practice to get the gas to the level you need for a simmer.
  • The design is functional – if you’re into sleek stainless steel, you might prefer the  Cobb or Lotus Grill , although these are charcoal burners.
  • You’ll need a larger model for bigger family meals.
  • There are no lifting tools so that you can swap hot sections as you need them. You’ll need gloves. Mind you, because there are no coals to burn down, it cools quickly.

Would we buy one?

Yes! The Safari Chef 2, LP version is the one for us.

Recipes using our Cadac

Crabcakes, a chowder and a simple stirfry

crabcakes

A quick mix and something a bit special. Serve with salad or even with the vegetable stirfry that follows below.

  • 100g bulgur wheat (or couscous)
  • 150g crab meat (fresh brown meat is best, but you can even use tinned)
  • two tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • finely chopped shallot, onion or spring onions
  • parsley, chervil, coriander…whatever you like or have
  • green or red chilli chopped
  • zest of a small lemon
  • salt and pepper, plus sumac if you have any (though entirely optional)
  • Boil the bulgur with twice its volume of water and simmer for three to four minutes. Strain and leave to cool.
  • Put all the other ingredients in a bowl. Squeeze any water out of the cool bulgur and add the grains to the bowl.
  • Form into burger shapes –as big or as small as you like and fry on the Cadac’s smooth frying surface in hot oil till golden and crispy on the outside.
  • Serve with a squeeze of lemon over the top and maybe a yoghurty dipping sauce or garlic mayonnaise.

Seafood chowder

seafood chowder

Gorgeous and creamy and fishy and smoky all at once. Delicious with crusty bread and a green salad on the side.

The only problem is keeping raw fish cool before you cook. Have a look at our article on buying a  camping fridge , or even better, camp next to a fishing boat.

  • butter or oil
  • a medium onion sliced or diced
  • a couple of rashers of bacon, pancetta or even a bit of chorizo (chopped chunkily, and optional)
  • about 350g raw fish – we used smoked haddock, salmon and some cleaned mussels (in shells or not)
  • a medium potato in chunks (use a leftover cooked one, or leave it out if needs be)
  • double cream (or we like Oatly ‘cream’ as a non-dairy alternative)
  • milk (or an unsweetened non-dairy alternative)
  • a tablespoon of flour
  • herbs – parsley, chives, chervil, dill are all nice, but whatever you have)
  • Pepper to season. Try pimenton too – smoked paprika adds a bit of depth, especially if you haven’t used smoked fish. And a squeeze of lemon can lift the dish.
  • Using either the Cadac’s deep pan/wok or your own pan on the Cadac’s pot-stand, heat the butter or oil and add the bacon and onion. Cook until they’re starting to brown/crisp.
  • Add your potato (if using), fish and milk. Simmer for 10 minutes or so. You want the fish to be just-cooked rather than disappearing
  • Add the flour to thicken the sauce a bit – slake it with a little milk or water to stop it going lumpy. Stir and then add the cream.
  • Mix in your chopped herbs and season with black pepper. You probably won’t need salt if you’re using smoked fish.

Vegetable stirfry

veg stirfry

Anything can go in a stirfry…well, almost anything. Here’s what we had hanging around:

  • spring onion
  • kale (pak choi’s nicer!)
  • tenderstem broccoli
  • beansprouts

Then we mixed the following in a jamjar

  • two tablespoons of soy sauce and two of vinegar
  • a tablespoon of  sweet chilli sauce
  • a pinch of pepper
  • Put a little oil in the Cadac wok or a big frying pan. Get it nice and hot.
  • Add the chunkier vegetables that will take more cooking and cook till they’re losing a bit of their crispness.
  • Add the garlic and chilli. Ginger would be good too.
  • Add the rest of the veg and keep it moving. When everything’s cooked (but not mushy), shake your jar and pour the dressing over – not all at once, you might want to save some for adding while you eat. Serve after a few seconds of warming through.
  • If you have some ready-cooked noodles, you could add these to the stirfry before adding the dressing. Just stir well and heat through.

Cadac Safari Chef Deluxe vs Cadac Safari Chef 2 (2016)

A very specific question about the Safari Chef. There is a new version out this year - the Cadac Safari Chef 2. Does anyone have any experience of how this differs from the previous version - the Cadac Safari Chef deluxe. I can't find the Safari Chef 2 anywhere for less than £99 inc postage. I have found a few places still selling the previous model. The best price I have found is £80 inc postage with a free pizza stone (normally about £13). http://www.thecaravanshop.co.uk/cad...p-pizza-stone-free-uk-delivery/prod_1246.html Is it worth the extra £33 for the new model?

Speleo62

We have the old one , thought we had bought new one! Old one requires a match/ gas lighter new automatic. Posh new legs . Used our old a couple of times and it was great. I let the experienced crew give you more info

Teejay

Have the old one, I believe the new one as mentioned has piezo ignition and its lighter plastic legs rather than metal.

I have a new one and will be at the meet if you want a look. I was pondering a review of it. Does indeed have plastic legs. I love everything about it except maybe one feature, the location of the gas connector. This has to be removed every time if you want to fold the legs away. Even the quick release valve gets in the way sadly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Looking at a few pictures online I think it may be in the same place. It's a minor gripe though and is very versatile and effective. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Just bought the new one from go outdoors, was on offer a couple of weeks ago and with topcashback and member discount came to about £75 if I remember correctly. So watch for offers and use topcashback for the retailer if you can. Only used it a couple of times on a recent trip but well impressed! Lamb chops and sausages and bacon sandwiches on toasted paninis. Not adventurous but just what we needed..

we purchased the Cadac safari chef 2 after pondering the older model, and seeing the new one in store. Despite the new plastic leg design it seems very stable and has the new feature of piezo ignition. There was 10% offer on at GoOutdoors so we picked it up for £90. I recommend it; it packs small, & cooks well. I did plan to run it off the existing gas canister using a new regulator and 3m length of gas pipe fitted with a quick-release connection. After first use though, I decided it is far easier to order a 2nd bottle and keep it as a back up for the van.... that means we have 2 internal gas rings and the cadac outdoors all usable at the same time for maximum flexibility. Hence I picked up the £31 new bottle mentioned on another thread.

BoomTriker

We have Safari chef 2 and are very pleased with it. Having ignition is a great asset as griddle plates cover the burner whilst in use. Also the 2 has 2 separate grill plates with flame deflectors to spread heat evenly, whilst the original has a reverseable plate. We also have the pizza stone which works well.

Thanks all. I'll be ordering one this evening. The best price I can find for the Safari Chef 2 is £99 inc VAT , delivery and a free pizza stone from gasproducts.co.uk .

  • Jul 11, 2016

I bought the Safari Chef 2 and have used it during a week in Cornwall. Very please with it. Did I read somewhere that when using the BBQ griddle the windshield should be filled with water so that the fat floats on the water when it drips through? We tried this. It sort of works but even if you add the max amount of water (before it extinguishes the flame) then it seems to mostly evaporate off before you finish cooking. Only other minor critisism is that the wind deflector cannot be used when using the simple pan stand.

  • Jul 12, 2016

We have an original safari chef and just used it for 2 wks in Switzerland, have the pizza stone. Absolutely brilliant. Pizzas were great, grill plate brilliant too. Highly recommend

Swissian

Do you guys have the one that connects to a gas bottle or the one that uses gas cartridges? I'm asking because I bought the cartridge version to be more flexible about where I grill, but I can't regulate the gas flow and so everything burns before cooking. Trying to determine if I have a faulty one or not!

High pressure version uses the small canisters, low pressure version the larger gas bottles. However the LP version can be used with the cadac adapter to use the small bottles too which for me is a bonus.

@MattBW do you have a link to where I can get the adapter for my LP Cadac?

I thought the HP and LP version would have at least different sized jets if not more parts in the burner department. Has Swissians bbq got the wrong sized jets in hence the uncontrolability of the flame?

Thanks Snowy, but as DM said, that looks totally different to the new version. Finally got in contact with Cadac today, after more than a week of trying, and hopefully they can help me determine if I have a defective model. In any case, I'm now thinking of getting the LP model and the regulator/tube kit. All very frustrating!

Cadac 2 Cook Pro Deluxe QR Review

Cadac 2 Cook Pro Deluxe QR Review

Alex Whybrow

18 Jul 2023

Our Cadac 2 Cook Review will detail exactly what you can expect from the Cadac 2 Cook - features, what it’s like to use and a final verdict

The Cadac 2 Cook Pro Deluxe QR is a top-rated camping stove, so we just had to try it for ourselves. We are always looking for ways to improve our outdoor cooking - food is such a huge part of camping. The days of only eating baked beans out of the tin are well and truly behind us!

In this Cadac 2 Cook Pro Deluxe review, we are going to be looking at the main features of this camping stove before taking it for a test drive to see how it performs, before delivering our final verdict to help you decide whether this is the camping stove for your next trip.

So easy to move from place to place

Can cook lots of different meals

Easy to set up and use

Durable Good value for money

Can be a bit top-heavy when it is full of food - make sure you have a stable surface

The lid does not lock in place

About The Brand

Specifications.

The Cadac 2 Cook Pro Deluxe is a stylish gas barbecue - there's no getting away from that. While how it looks may not be at the top of your list of wants for a camping stove, it certainly suggests that this is a quality product that will attract some admiring glances from other sections of the campsite!

The first thing that jumps out at you when you open the Cadac 2 Cook is just how portable it is, Measuring just 10cm x 57cm x 31cm (HWD when open), and weighing around 4 kg, this is easy to carry with you if you are moving from site to site. The unit is designed to fit nicely on a tabletop, advertised at "the ultimate table top companion" - it certainly is the right sort of size for that. It even comes with its own convenient carry bag. All this means that you can take it with you on day trips, for picnics or impromptu BBQs.

You connect the gas via the gas connection on the right hand side of the unit. It's a 'reverse thread', which means you have to turn the opposite way to loosen or tighten - so fight your instinct! You are provided with a spanner to help you connect your gas bottle. Once connected to gas, all you need to do is push the piezo ignition button, turn the gas to full, and you're good to go.

The 2 Cook Pro Deluxe QR has two independent burners (this is where it differs from its sister product, the Cadac Safari Chef 2 which only has one), below two pot stands, which gives you the flexibility to cook multiple dishes at the same time. This will allow you to cook two pot dishes, but you can use a ceramic flat plate, or a ceramic grill plate or any combination. This opens up so many doors when it comes to creating delicious meals - using direct or indirect heat and comfortably catering for a family of four.

The pan stands are 23 cm in diameter, and the ceramic flat plates are 25 cm, so you have plenty of room for your food. They all come with rubber feet on the bottom, which helps to prevent them from sliding around.

Using the Product

I can sum up what it is like to use the Cadac 2 Cook - simple. Everything about the design of this camping stove seems to be focused on making the experience as easy and stress free as possible. As someone who regularly camps with young children - that appeals to me greatly.

The set up is so simple - you will need a pressure regulator to connect it to your gas supply, but this can just be a standard EN417 connector and you can use either a butane or propane gas bottle. You can pick up a connector for less than £30 and they are pretty universal so you should only ever need to buy one for any gas connection.

Once that is connected (the only issue I had was remembering which way to turn the spanner!), all it takes is the push of a button and you are quite literally cooking on gas. From there it's like cooking at home! You have all the power you'll need to cook a fantastic meal. Once you set up the pot stands, the gas flame will be protected from the wind.

I loved the versatility - . The ribbed plate and flat plate are covered in a harder than normal non-stick coating. This means that it resists higher temperatures and spreads the heat more efficiently, so less gas is required to cook your food, which will save you money over time. It also provides you with perfect cooking surfaces to make whatever your heart desires!

I used it for a full cooked breakfast on the first morning of our trip, and it was a revelation. Everything was cooked perfectly, and just at the right time as well! I haven't found another camping stove that has allowed me to cook eggs as well as this stove - it was incredible!

When it comes to cleaning, they make a big thing about how the components are dishwasher safe, but unfortunately I'd forgotten to pack my dishwasher for this trip... Fortunately, the non-stick coating means that everything is easy to clean with warm soapy water, so you won't be holding up the queue at the washing up station - one of my many camping anxieties!

From the first meal that I cooked, I knew that I would love the Cadac 2 Cook Deluxe Pro - it just does everything I want from a camping stove, and a bit more! Its versatility, its portability, its functionality. It is just exactly what you want from a camping stove.

The thing that I liked most was that it made everything so simple and stress free. With two young children, I just want to take the hassle out of camping trips, especially at meal times. But at the same time I want to feed them delicious and nutritious food that I know they will eat without too much persuasion! The Cadac 2 Cook enabled me to do that.

If you're looking to spend a little bit of money on a new camping stove that will accompany you on many camping trips to come, this could be the one for you.

Erfahren Sie hier, was die Geräte taugen.

cadac safari chef 2 deluxe

Also bleibt nur Gas .

Welches Grill-Zubehör braucht man?

Mobiler Gasgrill Skotti in silber an Kartusche angeschlossen

Zwei verschiedene Schraubkartuschen nebeneinander

Improvisieren muss man mitunter in Sachen Windschutz .
