The Adam Project: release date, trailer and everything we know about the Ryan Reynolds Netflix movie

Ryan Reynolds stars in the time traveling adventure movie for Netflix.

The Adam Project Ryan Reynolds

The time travel story is a sci-fi movie staple, and Netflix has another entry to the genre with the upcoming Ryan Reynolds starrer The Adam Project .

An original idea written by Jonathan Tropper ( See ), T.S. Nowlin ( Pacific Rim: Uprising ), Jennifer Flackett ( Big Mouth ) and Mark Levin ( Big Mouth ), directed by Shawn Levy, Reynolds told Variety at the movie’s premiere that The Adam Project is reminiscent of many of the sci-fi and adventure movies of the 1980s like ET , Back to the Future or The Goonies .

But what is The Adam Project , who’s in it and when can you watch it? Here’s everything we know about The Adam Project .

The Adam Project release date

The Adam Project is going to be one of the titles that's new on Netflix in March , with the movie premiering exclusively on the streaming service on Friday, March 11, wherever Netflix is available.

Netflix is promising a new original movie debuting on its service every week of 2022 — highlighting many of them in a teaser trailer — and The Adam Project is certainly one of its most high profile movies in that lineup.

The Adam Project reviews

Reviews for The Adam Project have arrived. The general consensus is that the movie is an enjoyable trip for fans of sci-fi and Ryan Reynolds fans, but that might not mean everybody. Check out what critics are saying with What to Watch's The Adam Project critics review round-up .

What is The Adam Project about?

The Adam Project is a time travel story that sees a fighter pilot from the year 2050 team up with his 12-year-old self and his late father on a mission to save the future.

The Adam Project trailer

Netflix has released an official trailer for The Adam Project . In it, we see more of the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and his young co-star Walker Scobell, as well as clips of Zoe Saldana and Mark Ruffalo as they all try and save the future by stopping the invention of time travel. Give it a watch right here:

Netflix's previous teaser trailer is also available to watch below.

The Adam Project cast

A movie starring Ryan Reynolds is going to get a solid bit of attention no matter what, but there’s a number of names to get movie fans excited for The Adam Project .

Reynolds is playing the lead character of Adam, the adult version from 2050. Reynolds is best known for his role as Deadpool in the titular superhero movies but is coming off a big year in 2021 that saw him star in Free Guy and another big Netflix movie, Red Notice ; he also had Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard last year.

Playing opposite Reynolds as the younger Adam is going to be newcomer Walker Scobell. This is Scobell’s first movie credit, with him winning the role through an audition process. Reynolds told Variety that Scobell is a big Deadpool fan that knew the movies incredibly well. “He knew them backwards and forwards. So logically we worked so well because he could be a mini-me.”

Others in The Adam Project cast include Mark Ruffalo playing Adam’s father and Jennifer Garner as Adam’s mother (a 13 Going on 30 reunion!). Zoe Saldana ( Guardians of the Galaxy ) is also on board as the character Laura, as is Catherine Keener in an unspecified role.

The Adam Project director

Shawn Levy is directing The Adam Project . The movie is a reunion for Levy and Ryan Reynolds, with the two having worked together on 2021’s Free Guy .

Levy is no stranger to Netflix either, as he is a producer and has directed multiple episodes of the streamer’s hit series Stranger Things .

Other projects on Levy’s resume include the Night at the Museum franchise, This Is Where I Leave You , The Internship and Date Night .

How to watch The Adam Project

The Adam Project is, again, a Netflix exclusive movie, so you’re going to need to be signed up for Netflix if you want to watch it when it releases on March 11.

The good news is that even if you aren’t signed up for Netflix right now, it’s easy to do so. Just visit Netflix.com to start the sign up process.

Ryan Reynolds meets his younger self in new The Adam Project trailer

Let's do the time warp again.

ryan reynolds time travel movie

Ryan Reynolds has met his match: himself.

The Deadpool star has reunited with Free Guy director Shawn Levy for The Adam Project , and the first trailer offers a peek at this time-travel adventure film with a heart of gold.

Newcomer Walker Scobell plays Adam Reed, a 12-year-old kid going through a tough time after the loss of his father ( Mark Ruffalo ) who finds himself standing face-to-face with his older self (Reynolds).

Adult Adam is a pilot from the year 2050, when time travel has become a reality, who goes on a mission to find his love, Laura ( Zoe Saldana ), who disappeared along the timeline under mysterious circumstances. Crash landing in the year 2022, he's forced to team up with his younger self to save his future.

Jennifer Garner also stars in the film as Adam's mom, which makes for a nice 13 Going on 30 reunion between her and Ruffalo.

A screening of the film was held Wednesday night at New York City's Metrograph theater, and the first reactions from critics are largely positive.

"To say I had the time of my life making this film would be an understatement. And a misleading reference to Dirty Dancing ," Reynolds tweeted .

The Adam Project premieres March 11 on Netflix. Watch the trailer above.

Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy on time travel and "The Adam Project"

February 27, 2022 / 10:04 AM EST / CBS News

Have you ever wished you could go back in time for a do-over?

In the new Netflix film "The Adam Project," Ryan Reynolds is Adam Reed, a time-traveling fighter pilot from the future who crash-lands back to Earth in 2022, and meets the person he's spent years trying to outgrow: his 12-year-old self.

The 45-year-old Reynolds also produced the film, along with director Shawn Levy. For both, the story was irresistible.

"This idea of, if you could go back and actually meet your inner child, actually meet the self you used to be, what would that be like?" Levy said. "What would that be like for you? What would that be like for that kid?"

ryan-reynolds-walker-scobell-the-adam-project-netflix-620.jpg

In the movie, both versions of Adam get the chance to make peace with their long-lost dad, played by Mark Ruffalo. For the real-life Reynolds, the notion of sorting out emotional baggage with one's father all hits very close to home.

Reynolds is the youngest of four boys from Vancouver, Canada. Their dad was a former cop who ran a very tight ship. "I don't want to paint this picture that it was this, like, horrible place to grow up. But it was very tense," he said.

Correspondent Tracy Smith asked, "Because of your dad?"

"Yeah, my dad was a very tense guy. And, you know, I used to sort of describe him as, like, a skin-covered landmine. I attribute some of why I'm good at my job from that. I'm perceptive. I watch carefully for danger. And, you know, as an adult, that can really come in handy."

Reynolds has been in more than three dozen films, and being a sensitive guy often made him a natural to play the sensitive guy, like in 2009's "The Proposal," opposite Sandra Bullock. But if rom-coms put Reynolds on the Hollywood map, "Deadpool" is what made him a global superstar. The 2016 film, with Reynolds as a disfigured superhero in a mask, was a monster hit, but only after it sat in limbo for years.

Smith asked, "You fought for more than a decade to get that movie made. What'd you tell yourself through those years?"

"You know, it wasn't like I was whippin' out a broadsword and heading up the hill to fight my way through the executives again," he said. "It was, new leadership would come in, and I would go do the song-and-dance."

"But wasn't there a moment where you thought, 'Okay, I'm gonna stop doing the song-and-dance, like, this is just not gonna happen for me'?"

"Yeah. I think it was about a year-and-a-half before we got the green light for the movie."

But before he gave up completely, this test footage of the movie was leaked on the internet:

Fans went crazy, and that helped convince film bosses to give Reynolds the go-ahead to make the real movie. "Deadpool" I and II made more than $1.5 billion at the box office. But Reynolds says that, like his character in the movies, his self-assurance is just an act.

Smith asked, "So, you've talked about struggling with anxiety."

"Uh-huh. Yeah, I've had anxiety my whole life really. And you know, I feel like I have two parts of my personality, that one takes over when that happens.

" When I would go out on, like, 'Letterman,' back in the day , I was nervous. But I remember I'd be standing backstage before the curtain would open, and I would think to myself, 'I'm gonna die. I'm literally gonna die here. The curtain's gonna open and I'm just gonna be, I'm just gonna be a symphony of vomit,' just, like, something horrible's gonna happen! But as soon as that curtain opens – and this happens in my work a lot too – it's like this little guy takes over. And he's like, 'I got this. You're cool.'  I feel, like, my heart rate drop, and my breathing calm, and I just sort of go out and I'm this different person. And I leave that interview going, 'God, I'd love to be that guy!'"

"Wow. I'd love to be that guy, that Ryan Reynolds guy? "

"Sure. Yeah. Maybe no one else would!"

Besides his flourishing move career, Reynolds also has stakes in businesses like a cell phone company, a gin maker, and a Welsh soccer team. And his recent film "Free Guy" was a huge hit.

It was his first time working with director Shawn Levy, after a famous buddy insisted they meet.

Smith asked, "Your matchmaker was Hugh Jackman ?"

"We met on the dating site, hugh.com," said Reynolds.

Levy said, "He told me, if I ever meet Ryan and if I ever work with Ryan, we'll never stop. And then from the minute we first met on 'Free Guy,' it was gangbusters."

shawn-levy-ryan-reynolds-2ide.jpg

They're actually neighbors in New York, and they have a few other things in common. Reynolds, with his wife, actress Blake Lively, have three daughters; Levy and his wife, Serena, have four.

Smith asked Levy, "You said that you're coincidentally neighbors. You moved across the country, didn't you?"

"He followed me here, yeah," Reynolds interjected.

"Well, I'm never gonna admit that I moved across the country to be closer to him," Levy said.

"My rear view mirror features Shawn Levy!"

"But if I get a few great movies out of it, it's all worth it!"

Reynolds said, "Who travels east , too? Like, you're like the opposite of the Donner Party, you guys, except you all made it."

"Give us time," said Levy.

And while maybe he can't actually time travel, Reynolds has come a long way, too.

Smith asked, "You mentioned that, if your 12-year-old self could see you now, what he would think? Do you give yourself a moment to step back and look at where you are? And, if so, what do you think?"

"Yeah, I think my 12-year-old self would be proud of me," Reynolds replied, "because I do this thing in a way that has some integrity. I like to think that 12-year-old would look at where I'm at and say, 'We're doin' all right,' I think."

Coming off the momentum of last year’s Free Guy , Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy are teaming up once again for The Adam Project , a sci-fi action coming-of-age drama set to release on Netflix next month.

Reynolds stars alongside Walker Scobell as Adam Reed, a 13-year old boy who is visited by a time-traveling futuristic fighter pilot version of himself on a mission to save all of existence from the threat of uninhibited time travel. As counter-intuitive as that mission might sound on its face, future Adam’s goal seems to directly involve a confrontation with his late father (Mark Ruffalo), who passed away shortly before Adam’s visit to his past self.

Why Adam needs to team up with his 13-year-old self is yet unclear, but what is clear from the first teaser trailer released by Netflix is that he is not alone; battling time-hopping combatants with a retractable, lightsaber-esque bo staff alongside a laser-shooting ally played by Zoe Saldaña.

Reynolds’ last Netflix project, the globe-trotting action heist comedy Red Notice in which he starred alongside Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, became t he biggest original movie on the service when it premiered last year, prompting the streamer to greenlight two sequels due to be filmed back-to-back.

The Adam Project will be released on Netflix on March 11.

Ryan Reynolds travels back in time to meet his past self in first trailer for Netflix’s The Adam Project

The Adam Project is coming to Netflix on March 11

The first trailer for The Adam Project, a sci-fi movie starring Ryan Reynolds, has been released by Netflix.

Set to stream from March 11, The Adam Project sees Reynolds play a time-traveling pilot tasked with going back in time to meet his past self (Walker Scobell) – and heading even further back to meet his late father (Mark Ruffalo) to save the future. In a nice twist, Reynolds appears to be playing a little against type. Wisecracks are kept to a minimum with the Canadian actor settling nicely into his action hero role.

Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldaña also star in the Netflix time travel adventure. Shawn Levy – of Stranger Things and Free Guy fame – is directing.

Early reactions are already in for The Adam Project. In a great early indicator for whether it’s worth watching or not, Fandango's Erik Davis has already compared it to two iconic sci-fi franchises: "The Free Guy of star Ryan Reynolds & director Shawn Levy deliver another great original sci-fi gem in The Adam Project, an inventive time-travel adventure w/ shades of Star Wars & Back to the Future. Maybe some Flight of the Navigator, too. Funny & thrilling & heartwarming"

The Adam Project is not the only big release heading to Netflix in 2022. A mega Netflix trailer has revealed Enola Holmes 2 is on the way, with Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill returning as the Holmes siblings; Jason Momoa is set to star in Slumberland; Knives Out 2 is on the way; Chris Hemsworth will take the lead in Spiderhead, while Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy co-star in You People.

The Adam Project Ending Explained: Ryan Reynolds’ Time Travel Adventure, Unwound

Let's look at how the Adams saved the future.

Ryan Reynolds says goodbye to Walker Scobell in The Adam Project.

Warning: spoilers for The Adam Project ending are in play. If you’re looking to avoid the twists and turns of this Netflix original, head over to another piece of non-spoiler content from CinemaBlend.

Teamed up for their second film together, director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds scored a heartfelt time travel adventure through The Adam Project . The latest original to join the library of movies on Netflix , there’s a lot of moving parts that might need some explanation after getting to the end of this funny, but sweet journey through the fourth dimension. Luckily, we happen to have the answers you crave, and we’re about to jump into the craziness that is The Adam Project’s tale of temporal tampering.

This is your last chance to avoid spoilers, as even Christopher Lloyd could tell you that there’s no turning back the clock after we begin. (And in a sense, he actually did thanks to a fun ad he did with Ryan Reynolds .) If you want to keep your viewing experience fresh, but want to know a little more about The Adam Project , you can read our official review . Otherwise, sticking around from this point forward will divulge many secrets, starting with what happened at the end of the movie.

Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, and Walker Scobell walking together in The Adam Project.

What Happened At The End Of The Adam Project?

2018 is a more important year than you’d think, thanks to The Adam Project . Unknown to the world at large, it’s the year that two versions of Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds/Walker Scobell) teamed up with their dad Louis ( Mark Ruffalo , in a casting move that makes total sense ) to save the world. As Louis has just accidentally invented time travel, the boys slip back to this very year to correct that supposed error in history, and do so with flying colors. After destroying the only copy of the algorithm that makes time travel possible, in a manner befitting of an explosive blockbuster, the two Adams and their father play catch.

It would be their final moment together, as both Adams have to return to their corrected timelines, with Louis destined to die not too long after the moment they’re currently sharing. Thanks to the catharsis of one final adventure with dad, Younger Adam learns to go easier on his poor mother, Ellie ( Jennifer Garner ), and Older Adam continues through to his much brighter future, where he meets his beloved wife Laura ( Zoe Saldana ).

Zoe Saldana looks up with caution in The Adam Project.

How The Adam Project’s Future Originally Turned Out So Grim

The events of The Adam Project weren’t always so rosy. By time the movie opens in an altered 2050, Maya Sorian ( Catherine Keener ) is the most powerful person in the future. She managed to do this through, among other things, cornering the market on time travel; much like Ron Silver did in the 1994 time travel classic Timecop . With Laura presumed dead at Maya’s hand, Older Adam Reed takes matters into his own hands to correct the past.

Stealing a time jet, Adam intended to jump back to 2018, and enlist his father Louis to help him restore the future. Of course, The Adam Project throws in an added wrench of Older Adam accidentally landing in 2022, which then sees him recruiting his younger self to join the fight. Though he's not the only future defender trying to protect the timeline from the past.

In a bittersweet twist, we find out that Laura is actually alive and well after her supposedly fatal trip to 2018. Hiding out in hopes of correcting history for the better, she and Adam are reunited in 2022, but only for a brief moment. Sacrificing herself so that both Adams can travel back to 2018 themselves, Adam loses his wife again, with the hope that they'll still meet on the corrected timeline.

Ryan Reynolds defends himself with a staff while Walker Scobell watches in The Adam Project.

The Key Events Of The Adam Project That Needed To Change

In the long run, a whole bunch of things need to change in The Adam Project’s skewed timeline. Most importantly, all of Maya Sorian’s scheming and influencing needs to be undone, and there’s a lot of pieces to that puzzle. In order to collapse Maya’s empire, scores of illegal financial dealings and policy making need to be prevented.

Of course, there’s one easy way to wipe all of these misdeeds off the map: erase time travel from the timeline. The one key event that needs to be altered above all others is The Adam Project’s accidental invention of time travel, which means Louis’s algorithm needs to be lost before the government or Maya can even begin to capitalize on it. So long as time travel exists, it can be abused to reap ill gotten gains.

Catherine Keener offers her younger self a drink in The Adam Project.

Why Maya Changed The Original Timeline (And The Consequences)

What drove The Adam Project’s villain to try and take over the world? In a word: legacy. As we learn when Older Maya is monologuing with her younger self, Maya Sorian is consigned to obscurity in the history of time travel. The government allegedly gets their hands on it, and her lonely lifestyle of long hours and isolation were all for nothing. If Sorian is going to sacrifice her life in the name of time travel, shouldn't she at least get something out of it?

Older Maya travels back to 2018, gives Younger Maya the tips and tricks she needs to build an empire, while ruining the world in the process. The consequences are a vastly altered timeline that stems from The Adam Project’s earliest point in time and throughout the rest of the film. Though as an added bonus, the impulsive nature of Older Maya deletes her own existence from the timeline overall.

In her attempt to kill Younger Adam, erasing him from time itself, Older Maya accidentally kills Younger Maya with the bullet she intended for her young target. The bullet then continues to damage the particle accelerator that helped accidentally introduce the world of The Adam Project to time travel, eventually resulting in the destruction of the lab Maya and Louis Reed were working in. Time travel is officially dead, Maya Sorian no longer exists, and time can now play out as it’s originally intended to.

Mark Ruffalo says goodbye to Walker Scobell in The Adam Project.

Could Adam Have Saved His Father?

Some might be wondering if The Adam Project left the door open for Louis Reed’s life to be spared. With his fatal automobile accident occurring after the window into 2018 our heroes travelled back to, some could argue that this was an event that took place in the tangent timeline. Not to mention, the way that the story was winding up in the later acts, it almost felt like there was going to be a twist where Maya Sorian killed Louis to take control of time travel.

That’s not the case, as Louis Reed’s death seems like an accident that was always supposed to happen. Were this moment to have never happened, the characters and the story of The Adam Project would lack the personal growth we see both Adams undertake. Processing their shared trauma, Adam Reed understands that he has to cherish those he loves while they’re still in his life.

Older Adam Reed learns from his mistakes, and creates a better life where he appreciates his mother and his younger self. By the time he meets his wife to be Laura, the traumatic events of their original future are forgotten, and they get to have a fresh start in a shiny new timeline. The Adam Project is no more, but after seeing what the results entailed, it’s for the best.

If you’ve somehow read this entire ending breakdown without seeing the movie, or if you want to run through this exciting adventure all over again, The Adam Project is available to be streamed by Netflix subscribers far and wide. For those of you who don’t mind a peek into the future, feel free to head over to the 2022 Netflix movie schedule . There’s plenty of new thrills headed our way in the year to come, and this is the sort of knowledge that won’t screw up the spacetime continuum.

Adam project director explains time travel in ryan reynolds' new movie.

The Adam Project director/producer Shawn Levy explains the rules of the time travel featured in his and Ryan Reynolds' new Netflix movie.

The Adam Project director/producer Shawn Levy explains the rules of the time travel featured in his and Ryan Reynolds' new Netflix movie. Long before the  Free Guy  creative duo came aboard the sci-fi adventure, T.S. Nowlin's spec script had been acquired by Tom Cruise with the intention to star with Paramount Pictures eyeing an acquisition under its previous title Our Name is Adam . After nearly a decade of lingering in development hell, Netflix would later pick up the rights to the project with Levy attached to direct and produce and Reynolds attached to star and produce in mid-2020.

Reynolds stars in  The Adam Project  as Adam Reed, a time-traveling test pilot who ventures back to meet his younger self and his late father in an effort to come to terms with his past while also fighting to save the future from an unknown threat. Walker Scobell stars with Reynolds as the younger Adam alongside Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo as Adam's parents , Catherine Keener, Zoe Saldaña and Alex Mallari Jr.  The Adam Project  is gearing up to premiere on Netflix in March and those behind the sci-fi adventure are offering some insight to the film.

As part of the outlet's virtual Fan Fest, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy caught up with  IGN   to discuss their new movie  The Adam Project . When asked about the film's time travel rules, the director/producer kept appropriately vague to avoid spoiling the story though explained that they took a generally different approach than other time travel movies. See what Levy explained below:

"I'll start by saying that Ryan and I are not time travel genre wonks, so the goal was to make a time travel movie that felt really grounded and foregrounded character and fun and adventure and heart and didn't get too mired in the rules. To the extent that there are rules that I couldn't eliminate, basically, a person doesn't have their memories reconciled, ie. they don't remember something that has happened to them until they get back to what we, in this movie, call their fixed time.  Grown-up Ryan doesn't remember having gone back until and if and unless he's able to get back to his fixed time, which is the time period that he belongs in. We try to get the rules out of the way so that people can just enjoy the ride and have a visceral experience rather than a cerebral experience. our rule is that if you die out of your fixed time, you just have this molecular smear, what Ryan called 'digital skittles.' So, suddenly, making up a time travel rule, which we're allowed to do, freed us up to do all kinds of action that probably would have been too gory if we were actually doing literal death. So, just the freedom of writing the rules was very, very fun."

The time travel genre has delivered plenty of enjoyable efforts throughout the years, namely that of the  Back to the Future  franchise and Dennis Quaid-starring  Frequency  from which Levy has previously said  The Adam Project  draws inspiration from. However, even the most beloved of films in the genre have frequently been called into question for their time travel rules and either the convoluted nature of their mechanics or the lack of any real structure that causes the story to largely fall apart. Some of the most notable examples of the genre that saw their filmmakers truly take their rules into account are that of  Primer,  Rian Johnson's  Looper  and Christopher Nolan's  Interstellar .

Levy and Reynolds' decision to make their own rules for  The Adam Project  not only allowed them a better sense of creative freedom in their tone and storytelling, but also sounds a way to bridge the more complicated rules of quantum mechanics with the simpler rules of audience-friendly genre fare. Levy's explanation also appears to hint at a more linear structure to how the time travel in the past affects the future, seemingly reminiscent of the Time Heist rules for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's  Avengers: Endgame . Only time will tell how the time travel rules play out when  The Adam Project  premieres on Netflix on March 11.

Ryan Reynolds Time-Travels To Meet His Younger Self In Netflix’s The Adam Project Trailer

The Adam Project

Here’s a movie pitch for you: what if the Incredible Hulk was Deadpool’s dad? In a way, that’s the idea behind The Adam Project – the latest film from Free Guy director and Stranger Things creator Shawn Levy. It’s a time-travel tale, in which Ryan Reynolds ’ Adam crash lands on Earth and meets his younger self, also reconnecting with his dead father, played by Mark Ruffalo . Check out the trailer here:

“You need to think about your future,” Jennifer Garner tells the young Adam (Walker Scobell) after he gets into trouble for repeatedly fighting at school. “Because it’s coming…sooner than you think.” That’s literally the case here, teasing a funny and emotional father-son story with a sci-fi twist. And there are signs of a bigger picture, with Zoe Saldana popping up in an action based role, seen fighting some pesky aliens alongside Reynolds. Though there are plenty of opportunities for Reynold’s usual wise-cracking comedy, The Adam Project looks to have a more sincere and grounded tone than his and Levy’s previous collaboration – except for all the timey-wimey stuff, of course.

The Adam Project is Levy’s latest collaboration with Netflix – and it’ll arrive on the streaming service on 11 March, a few months ahead of the much-anticipated fourth season of Stranger Things . Bring on the sci-fi nostalgia.

Ryan Reynolds’ The Adam Project Should Be Fun, But It’s Sabotaged By Unwieldy Ambitions

S ome movies don’t have enough plot or excitement; others try to pack in so much that it’s a scramble just trying to figure out what’s going on. It’s hard to know exactly where The Adam Project, a futuristic fantasy and coming-of-age adventure-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds , falls. Is it way too much or not nearly enough? And where should we lay the blame for its flaws? (Jonathan Tropper, T.S. Nowlin, and Jennifer Flackett wrote the script; the director is Shawn Levy, the filmmaker behind the Night at the Museum movies and, more recently, the entertaining, if a bit manic, Free Guy , also starring Reynolds.) In places, The Adam Project drags interminably. But mostly it tries to do too many things at once, asserting that being a nerd can pay off, that time travel may not be all it’s cracked up to be, that dads should play ball with their sons, and that sons should be kind to their mothers—and that’s just a partial list. A movie with so many octopus ambitions is unlikely to pull off any of them, and that’s the bind The Adam Project finds itself in.

Reynolds plays Adam, a time-traveling fighter pilot from 2050 who crash-lands in the present day. His motives aren’t clear at first, and they become even murkier as the movie progresses. Apparently, he was really trying to go back a little further in time—to 2018—to change events that led to the death of his wife, Laura ( Zoe Saldana ). But later, his goal shifts toward changing the course of time travel at its very inception. (Or something.) Because as we come to learn, the rich, amoral corporate overlord Maya Sorian (played by Catherine Keener) has hijacked time-travel technology for her own nefarious purposes. It also turns out that Adam’s father ( Mark Ruffalo ) practically invented time travel. But then he died, leaving behind a widow ( Jennifer Garner ) and, of course, young Adam (played by Walker Scobell), a bright but unruly kid who keeps getting beaten up by the bullies at school.

Confused yet? Watching The Adam Project won’t help: minute by minute it wades deeper into its morass of excess. Then the special-effects kick in, including your usual time-travel zapping from here to there, as well as a phalanx of black-clad baddies who materialize out of nowhere. There are also two versions of Catherine Keener, one younger, in a CGI-buffed way, and one older—crazy! Garner, who plays the most sympathetic character in the whole film, disappears for long stretches. Whenever she re-emerges, The Adam Project breathes a little.

It’s a shame, because the film’s early moments—when young Adam first meets the older version of himself—show some promise. Reynolds has fantastic comic timing, and tends to play characters who are both insecure and have an inflated sense of their own importance in the world. His mildly pompous vibe is a plus, not a minus. He’s wonderful at playing characters who are just annoying enough—Reynolds will creep as close as he can to that line, pushing his luck every time. Just when you want to smack him, you’re likely to end up laughing instead. Scobell, as the young Adam, does a great job of matching Reynolds’ tics and mannerisms; it’s fun to watch these two together, the older Adam recognizing how terrifically annoying he was as a 12-year-old, even as the younger Adam—awkward and nerdy and angry at the world—marvels at the mere notion that he could grow up to be a time-traveling fighter pilot with a beautiful wife (and muscles to boot). But these two performers are undone by all the clutter around them. The Adam Project should be fun, but it’s sabotaged by its unwieldy ambitions. Forget the complexities of time travel, of wormholes and the laws of physics. This movie can barely get from point A to point B without tripping over itself.

Details About Ryan Reynolds' Netflix Time Travel Movie The Adam Project Revealed

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is making a Netflix original, and it's all about time travel.

By Mason Downey on March 1, 2021 at 3:17PM PST

Ryan Reynolds will be starring in an upcoming Netflix original feature called The Adam Project and its all about time travel--but if you're expecting a Christopher Nolan-style puzzle box, you might be in for a surprise. Collider recently posted an interview with screenwriter Jonathan Tropper (Banshee), where he revealed new details about the movie's plot.

"To me, the time travel was just a device," Tropper said. "The movie is not a hardcore sci-fi time travel movie. It’s a movie about people. For me, it was more about the characters and the story of this boy who’s lost his father and is trying to come to terms with what that means, through a really interesting adventure. I’m never gonna write a Christopher Nolan-type movie about time travel. That wouldn’t interest me. For me, it’s more about finding that story that appeals to the little kid in all of us."

The movie centers around Reynolds, a time traveler, who returns to meet his 13-year-old self (Walker Scobell) to track down their father (Mark Ruffalo), in order to course correct the future.

Tropper has been working on The Adam Project for 8 years. He explained that he wrote the script 8 years ago and has "fought hard to keep it alive at the studio and to keep them looking for the right way to make it."

But Tropper isn't the only hand on the script. He also explained that Reynolds himself, who is a co-producer on the film along with director Shawn Levy, has spent time honing the script and his own character. "He's very sharp-witted and his wit is very specific," Trooper said. "It's not just his wit, his sense of character is very sharp. We spent a lot of time honing the script together once he came on board."

The Adam Project currently has no release date.

Ryan Reynolds & John Krasinski Original Movie ‘If' Shaping Up For $40M Opening – Box Office Early Look

Paramount’s Ryan Reynolds starring, John Krasinski directed all audience movie, If, is heading for a $40M-plus opening on May 17, which for a non-holiday in May and for an original movie, is very good.

The PG movie is hot with parents, kids, and the 17-34 crowd, especially female. If arrived on three-week pre-release tracking with a 16 unaided –that’s the category where those polled express interest in a movie without being prompted– which is very high, and higher than what DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 arrived on tracking with; that fourthquel debuting to $57.9M.

Comps are tricky for If: Hello?! When was the last PG-live action conceived tentpole based on an original property?

Hands down, another No. 1 win for the Brian Robbins-run Paramount studio which has already delivered Mean Girls ($28.6M opening) and Bob Marley: One Love ($51.5M opening) as the Melrose Lot remains in exclusive talks with Skydance/Red Bird for potential takeover.

Also hitting three-week in advance tracking this AM is Focus Features’ Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, which is eyeing $6M-$8M, the movie having bagged already $15M-plus in its offshore release, as well as Lionsgate’s horror movie Strangers: Chapter One from filmmaker Renny Harlin, and starring Riverdale ‘s Madelaine Petsch which has a swing from $6M-$10M in its 3-day.

The key to success for all these movies are there multiples as they play into the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

CN Tower’s cameo in new Deadpool & Wolverine movie, plus other Canadian tidbits

Taylor Katzel

Main characters from Alberta and Saskatchewan

If you’ve ever walked the streets of downtown Toronto, Ontario, it’s hard to miss the massive, needle-like structure looming tall over every other building.

It’s called the CN Tower, and now it’s making its Marvel debut.

This week, Marvel released its trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine, which features a split-second cameo of the top of the CN tower toppled over in an apocalyptic landscape.

And it’s not the only thing Canadian about the film.

  • Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine teams up with Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool 3

ryan reynolds time travel movie

In the opening scene of the trailer, Wolverine and Deadpool meet in a bar with Canadian flags, and hockey is playing on TV.

Also, as Marvel lore goes, Wolverine is originally from northern Alberta, while Deadpool is from neighbouring Saskatchewan.

  • WATCH — Actor Ryan Reynolds spills on The Adam Project and time travel

The director of the film, Shawn Levy, is also Canadian.

Ryan Reynolds — who plays Deadpool — is from Vancouver, British Columbia.

This is the third in the Deadpool series, and is sometimes referred to as Deadpool 3 .

Outside of the new film, Deadpool has had several other Canadian connections.

  • WATCH — Is Marvel’s multiverse a real thing?

Quebec-born singer Céline Dion recorded a song called Ashes for Deadpool 2 , and each of the three Deadpool films was at least partially shot in British Columbia.

It’s important to note that the trailer contains several swear words and scenes of violence.

The film itself is rated R (restricted) which means you need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian if you’re under the age of 18, in Canada.

Not sure if an R-rated film is for you? Talk to an adult you trust to help make the decision.

Deadpool and Wolverine is scheduled to be released on July 26.

Ryan Reynolds revealed as Yas Island Abu Dhabi's new chief island officer

Deadpool star talks to the national as he takes over the promotional role from jason momoa, ryan reynolds is yas island abu dhabi's new chief island officer.

Ryan Reynolds is Yas Island Abu Dhabi's new chief island officer

Ryan Reynolds is Yas Island Abu Dhabi's new chief island officer.

The Deadpool actor assumes the role after Jason Momoa , who took up the position last year from comedian Kevin Hart .

Responsible for promoting the destination to an international audience, Reynolds is the mystery skydiving celebrity who has appeared in a new teaser campaign from the destination.

The Canadian actor, director and Wrexham Football Club co-owner appears to skydive onto the Abu Dhabi island in a new promotional video released on Instagram.

"Welcome Ryan" read lights on the W Abu Dhabi Hotel, the star's intended landing spot, but in what seems to be classic Reynolds comedy, the actor misses his landing point, and lands directly on top of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Yas Island جزيرة ياس (@yasisland)

“I've been an actor, a producer, a Welsh football club owner and I could go on. So I will …" says Reynolds.

The rest of his speech is drowned out by the roar of F1 cars as they zoom around Abu Dhabi's Grand Prix Circuit, including a part where he says it's his "mission to create the first-ever Yas Island …” which is bound to leave viewers wondering what's to come at the destination.

The action-packed reel shows the actor whizzing down water slides at Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, enjoying a drink at Cafe Del Mar Beach Club at Yas Bay and spinning around on rollercoasters at Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi. He also found time to play some golf on the island's pristine greens.

As part of the Yas Island role, Reynolds can expect some epic adventures. Previous campaigns saw Kevin Hart zoom around the island in a Ferrari while Jason Momoa took to the water, paddle boarding on the Arabian Gulf.

Reynolds is already been impressed by the island destination and its offerings.

"I was excited to see Ferrari World, which didn’t disappoint," said Reynolds in an interview with DCT Abu Dhabi, shared exclusively with The National .

"Like most people, I’ve never driven a Ferrari. But the world they’ve built is so immersive. It’s impossible to not be awed by these cars. Which are works of art. And the rides will leave you absolutely breathless. I’ve never seen rides that fast. Incredible."

"With the appointment of Ryan Reynolds as our latest chief island officer of Yas Island Abu Dhabi, we continue the tradition of excellence established by Kevin Hart and Jason Momoa. Reynolds brings his own unique blend of charisma, energy, and enthusiasm to the role, promising to elevate the Yas Island experience to even greater heights. We're thrilled to embark on this exhilarating journey with him, inviting fans worldwide to be part of the legacy," said Liam Findlay, chief executive of Miral Destinations.

Exclusive Q&A with Ryan Reynolds, Yas Island Abu Dhabi’s new chief island officer

If you had to cast a film set on Yas Island, what would the movie be about?

The last thing I’d want to do is set a film there. That would mean I’d spend my time working. Yas is built to help you unplug, golfing, amusement parks, pools and a ton of attractions. Less work. More play.

Describe your ideal holiday. Are you a thrill seeker or leisure lounger?

I can go for a bit of both. I like a couple of days to unwind and then a little excitement works just fine for me.

Which Hollywood buddy would like to go on a vacation with to Yas Island?

I suspect Hugh Jackman would have a pretty good time at Yas, I don’t think he golfs, so I’d probably get him on the course right away.

One memory you’ll be taking back home from Yas Island?

I loved the attention to detail. Everywhere you look it seems this place is made with care, relaxation, and adventure in mind. That said, the rollercoaster at Ferrari World was something I don’t think I’ll ever forget. I wasn’t expecting it to move that fast.

At the end of last season, the team earned a promotion to League Two — the first time they’d been there since 2008. “Wrexham” is more about the players on the team, though; it also follows the team’s owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny, as well as the Wrexham women’s team and those in the town itself. This comedy stars Jerry Seinfeld as Bob Cabana, Hugh Grant as Thurl Ravenscroft, Melissa McCarthy as Donna Stankowski, Jim Gaffigan as Edsel Kellogg II, and Amy Schumer as Marjorie Post. Eurovision Song Contest 2024 (Peacock)

The 68th showing of this distinctly European music contest sees all of the countries of the continent (plus a few others) compete over several nights to see who has the best song. And while it’s about the music, it’s also about the performances, which run the gamut from the silly to the sublime. In fact, it’s worth tuning into the earlier rounds to see some of the more outrageous acts for the sheer spectacle. This year’s contest will be held in Sweden, as the winner of the 2023 Eurovision was "Tattoo" by the Swedish artist Loreen. If you want to get a hint of what makes it so fun, I recommend watching “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams.  - MP

‘Doctor Who’ season 14 (Disney Plus)

The first Black Doctor is stepping into the TARDIS for adventures across space and time. In “Sex Education” alum Ncuti Gatwa was first introduced as the Fifteenth Doctor, alongside Millie Gibson as companion Ruby Sunday, in a 60th anniversary special last fall. Now, the Doc and Ruby are headed to places as far and wide as Regency era in England, the 1960s with the Beatles and war-torn future worlds. They’ll encounter friends and foes, including Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson), the Duchess (Indira Varma), Paul McCartney (George Caple) and John Lennon (Chris Mason) and a mysterious figured played by Jonathan Groff. - KW

Premieres May 10 on Disney Plus

‘Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire’ season 2 (AMC)

Season 2 picks up where the first foray left off. In the year 2022, vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) continues recounting his life story to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian). After the events of 1940 New Orleans, Louis and teen fledgling Claudia (Delainey Hayles) embark on adventures in Europe in a quest to discover Old World Vampires and the Theatre Des Vampires in Paris. There, Louis first meets vampire Armand (Assad Zaman), whose love affair will have devastating consequences in the past and future.

Premieres May 12 on AMC (via Sling or Fubo )

‘Outer Range’ season 2 (Prime Video)

Royal Abbot (Josh Brolin) returns in the neo-Western sci-fi hit with an endless hole as its most mysterious foil. Blending various genres, including the family drama, western-chic of “ Yellowstone ,” and sci-fi tropes of “Westworld,” “Outer Range” should be yet another mystery of epic proportions in its sophomore season as answers to the show’s most confusing questions finally come to light.

This go-around, more time travel could prove to be at the forefront of the narrative as major characters like Autumn (Imogen Poots) and Amy (Olive Abercrombie) could appear as both young and older versions of themselves. The sci-fi aspects will come alive far more than its first outing across all seven episodes of “Outer Range” season 2. - RE

‘Bridgerton’ season 3 part 1 (Netflix)

More sexy romps and juicy scandals are in store for London’s aristocrats — and Lady Whistledown has her pen ready to chronicle them all. Season 3 is going out of order from Julia Quinn’s books to focus on Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. Last we saw them, Penelope had tearfully overheard Colin mocking the idea of courting her; enraged, she picked up her quill to resume her persona as Lady Whistledown. Hell hath no fury like a woman writer scorned! Naturally, now that Penelope’s crush has been extinguished, Colin begins to see her in a new light. The course of true love never does run smooth on “Bridgerton.”  - KW

‘Trying’ season 4 (Apple TV Plus)

The third season finale of this underrated British comedy felt like a good place to end the parenthood journey of Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith). But “Trying” is so damn delightful that I’m not going to complain about getting more of it. The show jumps ahead six years after the couple adopted Princess and Tyler. Now a teenager, Princess (Scarlett Rayner) yearns to connect with her birth mother, putting Jason and Nikki’s parenting skills to the ultimate test. Meanwhile, Tyler isn’t getting picked for any soccer teams, so Jason decides to start one of his own for him and all the other kids who are left on the sidelines. - KW

Premieres May 22 on Apple TV Plus

‘Evil’ season 4 (Paramount Plus)

The fourth and final season of “Evil” will be coming to Paramount Plus very soon. This psychological thriller series will continue the journey of Kristen (Katja Herbers), David (Mike Colter), and Ben (Aasif Mandvi) as they investigate cases involving “wayward technology, possessed pigs, demonic oppression and infestation, a dance muse conjured by alleged witches, and an evil relic” (according to Paramount’s synopsis). The teaser trailer alone is frightening enough, with close-ups of the three characters being surrounded by the sound of absolute chaos. - AB

Premieres May 23 on Paramount Plus

‘Atlas’ (Netflix)

In a world now ripe with AI hardware, Netflix’s “Atlas” comes at the most interesting time in its portrayal of a hard sci-fi world with Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas Shepherd in the driver’s seat. As a data analyst with a deep disregard for artificial intelligence, Atlas is put on a mission to recapture a rogue AI android.

Things don’t go as planned, though, and the mission falls into disaster, leaving Shepherd in the hands of the very AI she sought to recapture. The two must join forces in order to save humanity, or else let it fall victim to the perils of AI and advanced innovations. Series director Brad Peyton describes the show in a Netflix blog as being “about trust and how difficult it is to trust people.” - RE

Premieres May 24 on Netflix

‘Eric’ (Netflix)

(left to right) Gaby Hoffmann, Benedict Cumberbatch sit in front of microphones and a crowd in Eric

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this upcoming thriller series that follows Vincent (Cumberbatch), a struggling father and leading puppeteer in New York who is desperate to get his son Edgar back after he went missing on his way to school. The series focuses on Edgar’s drawings of a blue puppet called “Eric," a monster-like toy that brought him great joy. Vincent hopes to display the puppet on TV thinking that his son will finally return home. As he grows more hopeless and depressed, he begins to destroy those around him while clinging to Eric, the only source of light and hope in an increasingly dark world. - AB

‘We Are Lady Parts’ season 2 (Peacock)

Anjana Vasan stands in front of microphone in We Are Lady Parts season 2

This diamond in Peacock's rough is well worth unearthing. The British comedy is irreverent, hilarious and heartwarming, and features bops you won’t be able to get out of your head. And it features an underrepresented group, Muslim women. After their successful show in the season 1 finale, season 2 continues to follow the punk band comprised of lead guitarist Amina Hussain (Anjana Vasan), frontwoman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey), bass player Bisma (Faith Omole) and drummer Ayesha (Juliette Motamed). They must navigate the ups and downs of making it in the local music scene while writing new tunes and dealing with their families. - KW

Shardlake practices law and the newly established Anglican faith, but things might change in these tumultuous times. Stephen Butchard adapts author C. J. Sansom 's bestselling series of the same name, while Justin Chadwick directs. (Knowing Thomas Cromwell's fate, we must ask: will Shardlake keep the "Sean Bean's characters always die" meme alive?) Shardlake also stars current TV king Anthony Boyle , who's coming off of Manhunt and Masters of the Air .
