If you’ve been lucky enough to catch My Chemical Romance on their reunion tour, you might have seen Dilly Dally as one of the opening acts for select dates. The Canadian grunge act started when vocalist Enda Monks and lead guitarist Liz Ball met in high school. After self-releasing their first single in 2013, they were joined by bassist Anna Jane Marie and drummer Benjamin Reinhartz. Dilly Dally scored a positive review from famously hard-to-please Pitchfork and were on the rise when they released their first full-length album Sore in October of 2015. At the end of the decade, Sore came in at No. 32 on Exclaim! magazine’s "50 Best Canadian Albums of the 2010s" list.

Relentless touring in support of the debut album stretched the band thin, however, and they decided to take a break rather than permanently break up the band. Enda Monks told Vice in 2018, “Dilly Dally, from the beginning, has always been about friendship, so when those friendships started to deteriorate on tour, it felt like it was the end.”

After taking some time for themselves and their mental health, they were able to regroup for their next album. Heaven was released in September of 2018, and addressed some of the difficulties Dilly Dally went through as a band. Speaking to Billboard , Enda explains that “Doom” — the third single off the album — was about the pressure they all felt while touring through Europe while also dealing with various personal issues. “We’re in it for the long haul, and it has to make sense for us with our lives, otherwise the art will suffer. Our mental health, what’s the point in doing it, if you’re just going to self-destruct?” the lead singer asserts.

As with everyone, the COVID-19 pandemic put tour plans for 2020 on hold, but they’ve been back on the road, and if social media is any indication, having a much better time. Dilly Dally’s Twitter timeline is full of fans sharing the supportive words My Chemical Romance has said about their opening act while touring together. And the love is mutual, with the band tweeting that they’re obsessed with MCR fans.

Dilly Dally has one more show opening for My Chemical Romance at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on October 12, and then a hometown show at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario on December 10, in support of Anti-Flag.

Dilly Dally

“This feels like the album we’d make if the band died and went to heaven,” says Dilly Dally frontwoman Katie Monks.

In a sense, that’s precisely what happened. In the short time since they released their acclaimed debut record, ‘Sore,’ the Toronto rockers managed to tour the world and take the press by storm, only to nearly call it quits and walk away forever. Rising from the ashes with more power and conviction than ever before, Dilly Dally’s new album is, appropriately enough, titled ‘Heaven,’ and it’s a fierce, fiery ode to optimism, a distortion-soaked battle cry for hope and beauty in a world of darkness and doubt. Monks describes the songs as coping mechanisms, and the collection does indeed form something of a survival kit for hard times, but even more than that, it’s a declaration of faith in the power of music and a burning reminder that we need not wait until the afterlife for things to get better.

“It felt like there was no point in doing another record if it wasn’t genuine or if we made it for anybody other than ourselves,” says Monks. “We wanted this album to be something that could help heal old wounds and rejuvenate us while on the road, something that could give us a clean slate and a fresh start. Making this record helped us fall in love with each other all over again.”

That love is the beating heart of Dilly Dally. Monks and guitarist Liz Ball formed the band after bonding over a shared passion for explosive, grungy rock and roll in high school, and the two have been inseparable and unwavering in their vision ever since. “Words really aren’t necessary when it comes to Liz and I,” Monks told Vice Noisey in an interview. “There is just a mutual understanding between us.” By the time they recorded their debut, Monks and Ball had fleshed out the lineup with bassist Jimmy Tony and drummer Benjamin Reinhartz and hit a blistering stride that floored critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Rolling Stone hailed ‘Sore’ as a “blazing” debut that “sounds like an unleashed id with a sick distortion pedal,” while Fader said it “hits that ever-elusive sweet spot between total recklessness and sly control,” and Pitchfork raved that the album “oozes with female desire” and offers up “a heavy swagger redolent of some of the best ever alt-rock.” In the UK, The Guardian praised the band’s “bludgeoning bass, gnarly guitars and red-raw vocals,” and The Line Of Best Fit dubbed it “a seminal first album.” The music earned Dilly Dally dates with Grouplove, METZ, and Fat White Family in addition to their first-ever international headline tour and festival appearances from Osheaga to Field Day. Years of hard work and grinding in the Toronto punk scene were finally paying off, but life on the road is taxing even under the best circumstances, and the weight of it all came crashing down in a way that no one had anticipated.

“I always thought that once we started doing well, it would make all our problems go away and everyone would be happy,” Monks reflects. “But instead, success sort of illuminated whatever dark energy had been lying around, and things erupted on tour.”

With the band’s future in limbo, Monks retreated into herself and her art. She left social media and focused on journaling and meditation, seeking to put as much daylight as possible between herself and the music industry. For an entire year, she wrote alone in her bedroom every single day on a white Flying V guitar, starting first with moody drones and noise beds run through her pedal array before warming up her voice and allowing words to flow freely from her subconscious. Band members began showing up once a week to help Monks refine the material she was channeling, honing in on taut, lean structures that cut straight to the heart of things.

“Because writing that way was so spiritual and so lonely, I ended up with hours and hours of material and so much emotional attachment to it,” she explains. “I really needed everybody else to help me sift through it all and take the songs from this meditative dream world to our full band sound.”

That sound is a singular one in the contemporary landscape, an intensely raw blend of fuzzed-out catharsis and melodic ecstasy delivered with what Brooklyn Magazine describes as a “snarling feminine energy.” Where ‘Sore’ was rooted in desire and rage, ‘Heaven’ is all about hope and optimism. The recurring fire imagery from the band’s debut has given way here to healing, therapeutic visions of water and light. There’s a release in the music, a sense of burdens being lifted through sheer force of will. It’s an emotional shift, to be sure, but Dilly Dally has by no means mellowed out. “When people ask me what this record sounds like, I tell them it’s doom metal vibes with lots of positive messages,” Monks says with a laugh.

Producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck) encouraged the band to lean into the unique space their music occupies and be unapologetically themselves. Rather than smooth out the rough edges, he highlighted them, drawing every potent ounce of energy from the foursome’s swampy tones, raspy vocals, and volatile rhythm section. “Rob really protected the kind of strange things that make each of us the musicians we are,” reflects Monks. “We’ve had engineers in the past tell us that we’re not doing things the ‘right’ way, but Rob saw all those things as great and wonderful.”

‘Heaven’ opens with the dreamy “I Feel Free,” which begins as a floating, untethered soundscape before transforming into a soaring anthem for a world that’s ready to finally turn the page on all the darkness and disillusion the last few years have wrought. It’s an ideal entry point for an album that aims to clean the slate and chart a new course, with Monks promising “We’ll start it again / In a moment of silence” as she finds peace through letting go. While the music is undeniably ferocious, there’s uplift woven into the fabric of every track. The inexorable “Believe” insists on self-confidence, while the driving “Sober Motel” celebrates the lucidity a clear mind, and the lilting “Sorry Ur Mad” makes a case for releasing yourself from the prisons of anger and resentment. Escape is a frequent goal—from the bruising “Marijuana” to the epic queer tragedy of “Bad Biology”—but it ultimately solves very little, at least in any permanent way, and so the album carves out its own atheistic religion to get through the day, a faith that validates our pain as real but responds with a beaming light of hope (and maybe a little bit of weed).

In the end, Dilly Dally labours under no delusions, and if you think holding onto hope in a fucked up world is naive, they don’t particularly care. Life is hard, depression sucks, and the road can be brutal. But every night, when the band steps onstage to sing these songs, all bathed in bright light, it’s sure going to feel a lot like heaven.

Dilly Dally break up, release two songs

”Thank you to anyone who's ever come to see us perform, the artists who've inspired us, and everyone in the extended DD family. It’s time for us to move forward and continue our journeys separately. We wanted to say goodbye on a positive note. That's why we are self-releasing two new songs today. Recorded close to home in Toronto, they came about naturally over the last year or so. For anyone who's shown support in any way, from fans to friends to collaborators: We could not have accomplished what we did without each of you, and will be forever grateful. Xoxo

The band has also released a pair of singles called “Colour of Joy” and “Morning Light” and will be playing their last show at Lee’s Palace in Toronto, Ontario on May 27 with Bad Waitress and Breeze . Tickets go on sale March 3. Dilly Dally released two full-length albums over the course of their run, 2015’s Sore and 2018’s Heaven . Check out the new songs and announcement in full below.

Interview Views from The 6: Weaves and Dilly Dally

No city this year has churned out bangers quite like toronto. with two of the canadian dazzler’s brightest hopes on the road together, who better to act as tour guide.

Words: Tom Connick Photos: Ed Miles 24th November 2016

Toronto’s always fostered musical brilliance. From Broken Social Scene to Barenaked Ladies (stick with us), via Fucked Up, Crystal Castles and Death From Above 1979, Canada’s busiest city’s got a pedigree like few others. 2016, though, saw the Queen City set the agenda on the buzziest, fuzziest new bands. Spearheading that influx of Torontonian talent? Dilly Dally and Weaves, both still riding high on their respective debuts. Not that you’d guess it today – at the end of a bunch of joint European dates, they’re battling off the dreaded tour flu. “We’re starting to get sick,” grumbles Weaves’ delightfully deadpan guitarist Morgan Waters, “I need a green tea.” “It’s like having a piece of home - four pieces of home - out on the road with ya,” enthuses Katie Monks, Dilly Dally’s figurehead and the owner of the year’s most torched vocal cords.

“It was like a little summer camp,” picks up Weaves singer Jasmyn ‘Jazz’ Burke, “we’d often stay at the same places.” “Like a musician orphanage,” Morgan smiles.

A ragtag bunch brought together by their home city’s bubbling music scene, Dilly Dally and Weaves’ fortunes have been threaded together for years. “Ben, our drummer, and Zach [Bines, Weaves’ bassist], went to high school together!” Katie squeals. “Zach had luscious, long, curly rocker hair,” Morgan reveals, while “Ben was a goth.” “Yeah,” grins Katie, “Ben wore lipstick and make-up.”

Views from The 6: Weaves and Dilly Dally

"You can always find a venue to play. There’s always someone’s basement.””

— Liz Ball, Dilly Dally

Things lasted long past graduation though, with both bands linking up for a Christmas party last December, and for “a little pop up show in a cool warehouse” back when Dilly Dally’s debut album ‘Sore’ was born this time last year - “Fall baby!” laughs Morgan. Going back yet further, Katie recalls a 2011 show in the basement of Toronto’s Parts & Labour, with Jazz supporting solo under her old RatTail moniker. The Adele obsessive is flabbergasted by the memory – “Oh god! That was a long time ago…” “And do you remember The Elwins?” smiles Dilly guitarist Liz Ball. “You had a hollow-body electric. And we played that show with you!”

The whole gang are clearly proud of their hometown. “Toronto’s always had a lot of great music coming out of it,” says Jazz, “it’s just now that people are starting to pay attention. It’s always been a city where you could go and see music every night. I feel like it’s always been like that.” They collectively reel off a list of their local favourites - New Fries, Vallens, Poster Boy and She Devils all get the nod, while local label Buzz Records also garners praise. “There’s lots of different labels pumping out awesome bands,” says Liz, “But yeah, Buzz is always signing cool new people, so it’s sweet when fans come up to us and they’re like, ‘Oh, what do you listen to?!’ It’s like, ‘Just check out all Buzz’s roster – you’ll love it all.’”

Suffering from the all-too-common big city ill of rocketing rent prices, there’s nevertheless a little bit of trepidation over the city’s future. “I don’t know if people can afford to live there…” Jazz ponders, while Liz notes that everyone’s moving further and further out of the centre, leaving a bunch of their favourite venues with dwindling audiences and bled-dry resources.

“I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s like there’s money rolling around, in music,” Katie notes. “Oh, don’t expect to get paid,” laughs Liz, “but you can always find a venue to play. There’s always someone’s basement.”

“Toronto’s always had a lot of great music coming out of it. It’s just now that people are starting to pay attention.”

— Jazz Burke, Weaves

With tonight marking the final night of their run as a terrible twosome, both Weaves and Dilly Dally are looking forward to heading home. As it happens, their stories look set to intertwine further still – they’re both looking towards second records.

“I started writing a tracklisting, and I wanna move from the tracklisting, to the outside,” says Jazz of Weaves’ round two, which is on the cards once they wrap up US dates with Mitski. “I feel like that’d be a fun way to write. Sometimes when you’re on the road, little words pop into your head and you’re like, ‘Hmm, I wonder what that could entail…’” Dilly Dally, meanwhile, have got a whole bunch of tour dates with Grouplove to get through before they look to their second full-length - “I’m really excited to look at all their clothes, because they have really cool clothing,” says Katie matter-of-factly. “And then that’s two months, and damn we are toured out. Some peace of mind, some isolations, and then certainly the beginnings of the next record.” “The cycles are matching up,” quips Morgan, before Jazz suggests, with a guffaw, that a bit of time apart might be healthy – “We’re in sync!”

Get Dilly Dally tickets now to see an amazing performance live by a great entertainer. Pop-Rock music has an emphasis on recording craft and songwriting and not as much emphasis on attitude. Beginning in the 1950s as an alternative to rock and roll, early iterations of pop-rock were influenced by doo-wop and rock-and-roll arrangements and styles. Many traditionalists prefer rock and roll to the more slick, commercial production of pop-rock.

Some refer to the music as power pop with a similar sound and lyrical content. Pop-rock music has been very commercially successful using elements of rock music. Many describe it as an upbeat variety of rock music. The term pop comes from the early twentieth century referring to popular music. In the 1950s, it began to be referred to as a specific genre typically aimed at youth and young adults. It is frequently characterized as a softer alternative to rock and roll.
