Other ways to watch and stream the 2024 Tour Championship without cable:

Peacock will carry every minute of action at the Tour Championship. Peacock costs $7.99/month with ads, while ESPN+ is $10.99/month.

Moab, Utah, is a good choice for travelers seeking adventure and unparalleled natural beauty on their next vacation. Arches National Park sits a mere 5 miles north of town, making Moab a great home base for activities like hiking, horseback riding and canyoneering. Or, crank up the tunes on a scenic drive through the park. September is warm in the 70s and 80s, which makes other outdoor pursuits like rafting, biking and stargazing ideal.

With average temperatures sitting in the 70s and 80s in September, the Greek island of Santorini entices travelers with favorable weather, sunny skies and warm waters, perfect for swimming at some of Greece's top shorelines like Red Beach and Kamari Beach. After sipping vino at one of the region's top-notch wineries, dine alfresco along Amoudi Bay or take in the island's stunning natural beauty on the roughly 6-mile hike from Fira to Oia. Plan your vacation for mid-September to catch the Ifestia Festival, an annual event paying respect to the island's volcanic history through live music and a fireworks display.

September is the sweet spot for visiting Sequoia National Park – summer crowds thin as kids go back to school and temperatures remain comfortable in the high 60s, but roads and services have not yet closed for the winter season. This makes popular activities like hiking through the Giant Forest and driving the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway even more enjoyable. Arrive on the fourth Saturday of September to take advantage of National Public Lands Day, one of the National Park Service's free admission days.

Adventurous travelers will be enamored with Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Not only can visitors sail past a glacier-carved fjord on a boat tour of Western Brook Pond, but they'll have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk upon the Earth's exposed mantle in the Tablelands. While summer is a popular time to travel to Gros Morne, a September visit brings added benefits like vibrant fall colors, crowd-free trails and active wildlife.

Oahu is Hawai'i's most-visited island and Waikiki is one of America's most popular beaches , so if you want ample room to spread out on its famous shores, visiting during the fall shoulder season is your best bet. In September, the island sees fewer tourists but still offers hot, dry weather and warm water ideal for swimming and surfing. The discounted rates in September will also make your vacation that much more relaxing, and you'll be able to experience one of Hawai'i's biggest cultural events, the Aloha Festivals.

Situated off the coast of Queensland, Australia, this chain of 74 islands are loved for their postcard-worthy beaches and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. Base your stay on popular Hamilton Island, which features an array of adults-only resorts, or camp under the stars on Whitsunday Island, home to the popular Whitehaven Beach. Must-do activities in the Whitsundays include lounging on the sand, snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing. Luckily, travelers who visit in September will be treated to low humidity and consistently sunny skies with average temperatures resting between the high 70s and low 80s.

Although September technically falls within this Washington park's shoulder season, travelers will still find plenty to love about an autumn visit to Mount Rainier National Park. Depending on your elevation, average temperatures can range from the mid-50s to the low 70s in September, and the region's beautiful fall colors make it a perfect time for leaf peeping . One of the world's most impressive national parks , Guilin and Lijiang River National Park in southern China is downright magical in September. The weather is cool and dry, making it easy to enjoy the park's mist-covered karst mountains and rice terraces, along with other highlights like the Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill. Visiting Arizona's Grand Canyon during its peak summer season can be risky (high daytime desert temperatures and steep hikes don't mix well). September not only offers a slightly cooler climate but fewer crowds to contend with now that the kids will be back in school. The park's South Rim, which is usually bustling with tourists in summer, sees fewer visitors come September, making it a great time for hiking traveler-approved paths like the Rim Trail. What's more, destinations like the highly underrated North Rim are still open throughout the month.

The capital of Wales is a beautiful destination year-round, but September's mild temperatures (think: highs sit in the mid-60s) and colorful fall foliage make this an ideal time to plan a trip. Foodies will love dining on delicious Welsh cuisine at annual events like the Amgueddfa Cymru Food Festival, held at the open-air St Fagans National Museum of History, and the Abergavenny Food Festival, which is hosted by the nearby town of Abergavenny. When you're not enjoying Cardiff's culinary specialties, spend your time exploring Roath Park or taking a guided tour of the historic Cardiff Castle.

Located on New Zealand's South Island, Fiordland National Park draws travelers with its stunning yet dramatic landscapes . While the weather in the park can be unpredictable in September (a spring month in the Southern Hemisphere), Fiordland typically sees daytime temperatures that hover in the 50s. These cool but comfortable days are when Fiordland's marine life, including penguins, fur seals and dolphins, tend to be most active, so be on the lookout while cruising or kayaking through jaw-dropping Milford Sound. Also save time for hiking one of the park's three Fiordland Great Walks trails.

Travelers who plan their getaway for the end of the month can also experience Chuseok, a three-day harvest festival known as Korean Thanksgiving.

Harris and Walz heading to Georgia as campaign seeks to build on convention momentum

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour of southern Georgia next week, the duo’s first time campaigning in the state together and, as of now, their first public event after the Democratic convention in Chicago.

The pair will be using the momentum from the party’s convention to drive them into the last couple months of the general election. In addition to the bus tour, Harris and Walz are expected to tape their first joint interview next week and attend multiple fundraisers, most likely to take place in New York, California, Florida and Georgia, according to two sources familiar with the planning.

Following the tour, Harris will headline a solo rally in Savannah, Georgia. The trip will mark Harris’ seventh visit to the state this year and her second since launching her presidential campaign last month.

“Campaigning in this part of the Peach State is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians — with a large population of Black voters and working class families,” the Harris-Walz campaign said in a press release announcing the bus tour.

Harris and Walz’s visit will come as the Republican ticket ramps up its campaigning in the state. Vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance of Ohio held a campaign event in Valdosta on Thursday, following a rally by former President Donald Trump in Atlanta earlier this month. Republicans, too, have sought to capitalize on polling that suggests the party could pick up a larger share of Black and Latino voters this election cycle.

The southern Georgia bus tour is expected to echo the campaign’s bus tour of western Pennsylvania earlier this month, which included stops at a local campaign field office, a firehouse and a high school football practice.

Harris and Walz initially planned to visit Savannah during the campaign’s battleground state tour earlier this month, but they had to postpone the event due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Though it’s unclear exactly where Harris and Walz will go, southern Georgia is home to some of the state’s largest Black populations, including Dougherty County, which has the second-highest proportion of Black residents in the state. The campaign has opened field offices in the predominantly Black cities of Albany and Valdosta.

“The south Georgia region is a priority for the campaign: We have nearly 50 full time staff across seven offices in the area, including Valdosta. We have hosted more than 500 events in the region since May 31,” Harris-Walz Georgia campaign spokesperson Adelaide Bullock said.

Ranada Robinson, research director for the New Georgia Project Fund, said appealing to Black voters in both rural and urban areas will be critical to Harris’ success in the state, as it was to Biden’s victory in 2020.

“Black voters are the key to winning Georgia. Of course Black Georgians can’t do it alone, but we are absolutely the reason 2020 turned out the way it did,” she said. “Black voters had historical turnout, and it has to happen again for there to be victory in Georgia.”

Earlier this month, Harris held the second rally of her presidential campaign in Atlanta, an event that featured Megan Thee Stallion; the campaign said it attracted more than 10,000 people.

It then launched a mobilization effort in the state and now touts more than 35,000 volunteers, 174 staffers and 24 coordinated campaign offices sprawled across Georgia. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”

The Harris-Walz campaign said it has recruited nearly 400,000 news volunteers nationally since Harris launched her presidential bid last month. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”

Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon identified Georgia as one of the campaign’s top targets, noting shifting demographics that could aid the vice president in expanding support from 2020.

“The Vice President’s advantages with young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters will be important to our multiple pathways to 270 electoral votes,” Dillon wrote in a recent memo.

Harris and Walz are also expected to barnstorm battleground states around Labor Day, before Harris focuses more of her time on debate prep ahead of her September matchup with Trump.

A Trump adviser said the campaign expects Harris will get a “bump” coming off the convention but compared it to a “sugar high,” saying they didn’t believe it will change the overall state of the race.

CORRECTION: (Aug. 25, 2024 2:05 p.m. ET) A previous version of this article misstated the number of volunteers the Harris campaign has in Georgia. It has 400,000 nationally, not in the state of Georgia.

The Grand Tour Teases Final Episode, Airs September 13

  • Amazon has released a teaser video for the final episode of The Grand Tour.
  • It marks the end of a 22 year partnership between Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May.
  • The trio put Top Gear on the map and The Grand Tour ended up outliving it.

The end of an era is upon us as the final episode of The Grand Tour will air on September 13. When it does, it will likely mark the last time Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May appear on a show together.

The Grand Tour has been airing for eight years, but the team is more famous for putting Top Gear on the map. The show turned into a global phenomenon, before Clarkson’s infamous “fracas” put an end to things. However, in an ironic twist, The Grand Tour would end up outliving Top Gear.

With all that being said, the final episode is called One For The Road and Amazon has released a new teaser video. It notes the trio have been together for 22 years and shows Clarkson saying “For the last time, here we go.”

That’s not much to go on, but the clip shows the hosts traveling across a desert and sharing numerous laughs. They also appear to encounter issues with their questionable cars which include a modified Lancia Montecarlo .

While the teaser doesn’t reveal much, the video is already a hit as it has been viewed more than 420,000 times in the first six hours. It’s also the #12 trending video on YouTube and is followed by another video featuring James May’s visit to Jay Leno’s garage.

What happens in the month of September? There’s a little for everyone: the last days of summer and the first days of fall. See September holidays, advice, recipes, fun facts, and trivia, as well as important days you should know all about.

September, in Old England, was called Haervest-monath (Harvest Month). This is the time to gather up the rest of the harvest and prepare for the winter months.

There are flowers enough in the summertime, More flowers than I can remember— But none with the purple, gold, and red That dye the flowers of September! —Mary Howitt (1799-1888) Read Next Month of August 2024: Fun Facts and Holidays! The Month of September

September’s  name comes from the Latin word septem , meaning “seven.” This month had originally been the seventh month of the early Roman calendar.

September Calendar

  • September 2 —the first Monday of the month—is  Labor Day . Canadians also observe Labour Day.
  • September 11  is Patriot Day , held in honor and remembrance of those who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
  • September 11  is also  Grandparents Day  this year. Honor your grandparents today—and every day!
  • September 17 is Constitution Day . This day celebrates the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, which occurred on September 17, 1787 (just five years before the founding of The Old Farmer’s Almanac , believe it or not!).
  • September 21 is recognized as the annual International Day of Peace . Observances range from a moment of silence at noon to events such as peace walks, concerts, and volunteering in the community.
  • September 22 marks the start of fall! This year’s  Autumnal Equinox  occurs at 8:44 A.M. EDT . On this date, there are approximately equal hours of daylight and darkness.
  • September 26 is Johnny Appleseed Day , celebrating John Chapman and everything apple!
  • September 29 is  Michaelmas . Michaelmas is an ancient Celtic “Quarter Day” which marked the end of the harvesting season and was steeped in folklore.

mid autumn chinese festivals- moon festival

Holiday Traditions Around the World

Also known as the Moon Festival , this holiday has been celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is said to be the second-largest festival in China after the Chinese New Year. Observed on the 15th day of the eighth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, it can occur in either September or early October in the Gregorian calendar.

This autumn festival occurs during the full Moon nearest the fall equinox, which is traditionally said to be the brightest and roundest. Local festivities might involve brightly colored lanterns, dances, games, and other entertainment. Families and friends celebrate into the evening to give thanks for the harvest and for being together, offering each other wishes for happiness and long life and remembering loved ones who live far away.

Celebrants may make offerings to the Moon goddess Chang’e or share traditional mooncakes by moonlight. These round pastries, which symbolize the full Moon and reunion, are often filled with red bean or lotus seed paste surrounding a salted egg yolk in the center.

September Birthstone

The birthstone for the ninth month is the sapphire, which was once thought to guard against evil and poisoning.

  • Sapphire is a form of corundum that is typically blue, a color caused by tiny bits of iron and titanium; the vivid, medium blues are more valuable than lighter or darker forms. Due to various trace elements, sapphires also appear in other colors. Those with red colors are called rubies.
  • Sapphires were thought to encourage divine wisdom and protection. They symbolized purity, truth, trust, and loyalty. Some believed that if they were placed in a jar with a snake, the snake would die.
  • The sapphire, along with the related ruby, are the second-hardest natural gemstones, with only the diamond being harder.

September 12: Choices

On this day in 1962, President John F. Kennedy went to Rice University in Houston, Texas, to make a speech justifying his proposed $5.4 billion space program. He had called on Congress in the previous year to fund a massive project to put a man on the Moon and bring him home safely before the end of the decade. Toward that end, he asked his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, to make it happen. Johnson, a Texan, was happy to oblige.

The plan was to establish a Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, upon land that had been made available by Rice University (which had received it from Humble Oil and Refining Company). If that happened, federal money would flow to that city and to Rice, a university distinguished for its scholarship, if not for its football. In football, the University of Texas was king, although Rice gamely played Texas every year.

JFK at Rice Nasa

Kennedy challenged 35,000 listeners, sweltering in the Rice football stadium, to think big: “But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, Why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic?” he asked. Then he added another impossible goal, one he had jotted in the margin only minutes earlier: “Why does Rice play Texas?”

The line drew a huge laugh and added a touch of humor and humility to the soaring rhetoric. His speech continued, soon issuing the now famous lines, “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard … .”

Kennedy eventually got his moonshot, although he did not live to see Neil Armstrong’s 1969 moonwalk . And, three years after the speech, in 1965, Rice beat Texas. It would be 28 years before that happened again.

The time we know call "Michaelmas" may have started as a Celtic observance, but was "re-branded" so to speak by the Catholic church and named for St. Michael the Archangel to get people's minds off their pagan traditions. Because the Church was practically the only entity keeping a calendar, many common events were tied to Michaelmas (food traditions, planting, harvests, etc) as well as the settling of debts. At Fisheaters.com I found this -- "Today is also one of the 4 English "Quarter Days," days which fall around the Equinoxes or Solstices and mark the beginnings of new natural seasons (i.e., Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall) and which were used in medieval times to mark "quarters" for legal purposes, such as settling debts. The other days like this are: Lady Day (the Feast of the Annunciation) on March 25, the Feast of St. John on June 24, and Christmas on December 25."

I live in Southern Vermont. One of the most popular times of the year is Autumn foliage. Is there a prediction of when "peak foliage" will be this year?

As an avid traveller, I’m always on the lookout for hidden gems and secret spots away from the crowds. If you’re like me and want to escape the masses, here are a couple of my favourite off-the-beaten-path places to visit in September in the USA.

The North Cascades National Park is one of the most underrated spots to visit in September. This rugged, mountainous park in Washington state sees the summer crowds dwindle after Labour Day weekend, leaving the trails and viewpoints blissfully uncrowded.

I love escaping to the North Cascades in September to take advantage of the cooler fall temperatures and autumn colours starting to emerge, especially for kayaking . The park has over 300 glaciers and gorgeous evergreen forests with larches that turn a vibrant gold in the fall.

Some of my favourite hikes are Maple Pass Loop , which offers stunning views of golden larches framing snow-capped peaks, and Diablo Lake Trail, where you can see the electric turquoise waters of Diablo Lake surrounded by fall foliage.

After hiking, I head to the charming town of Winthrop on the park’s eastern side. This old West-themed town has great lodging options, restaurants with hearty, homemade fare using local ingredients, and craft breweries where you can sample Pacific Northwest ales.

It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of enjoying the park’s natural splendour.

The North Cascades National Park in September is ideal for avoiding big crowds, seeing the autumn colours start to emerge, and taking advantage of the crisp, cool fall weather.

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination for fall, put the North Cascades at the top of your list.

2. Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is one of my favourite places to escape the crowds in September. The summer rush has died down, the fall colours are starting to emerge, and the weather is still pleasant enough to enjoy the outdoors.

September is the perfect time for hiking in Glacier. Trails that were snow-covered just a few months earlier are now open, with smaller crowds. I love hiking the Highline Trail for jaw-dropping views of glacial lakes and craggy peaks.

Take a guided tour  as the Hidden Lake trail offers a moderately challenging hike through lush cedar forests to an alpine lake. For an easy stroll, the Trail of the Cedars wanders through an old-growth cedar grove.

As the crowds thin out in fall, Glacier’s wildlife becomes more active and visible. You may spot mountain goats navigating steep cliffs, bighorn sheep grazing in high alpine meadows, or even a grizzly bear fishing for salmon in a secluded creek.

Bring binoculars and a zoom lens for your camera to view wildlife from a safe distance. The best spots for wildlife viewing are Logan Pass and Many Glacier.

The turning of the leaves in Glacier is a spectacular sight. Larch trees turn a vibrant gold, while groves of quaking aspens display bright yellow and orange hues. Reds and purples emerge on the shrubs and berry bushes.

The autumn foliage typically peaks in late September, so aim for the middle to end of the month to see Glacier at its most colourful. The Going-to-the-Sun Road and Many Glacier area offer some of the best places to view the fall foliage.

Zion National Park is one of my favourite places to escape the crowds in September. Located in southern Utah, Zion spans 230 square miles of dramatic red and orange sandstone formations, slot canyons and hiking trails.

In September, the summer heat has faded, the autumn foliage is emerging, and the seasonal monsoons have passed—perfect weather for outdoor exploring without hordes of tourists.

If you’re not familiar with the place, you can also take a self-driving audio guided tour , where you can take in the awe-inspiring views of Zion’s massive sandstone cliffs, like the Great White Throne and Checkerboard Mesa, without bumping elbows.

One of my top recommendations is hiking the Narrows, a stunning slot canyon trail right in the heart of the park. As you trek up the Virgin River, the canyon walls close in and tower high above, up to 1000 feet tall.

The morning light filtering through the narrow gap is magical. The trail is mostly flat but you’ll get wet, so come prepared. Early September is the best time before the fall flash floods start.

For jaw-dropping vistas, hike the Emerald Pools trail to the lower and upper pools. You’ll walk under massive cliffs and by springs and waterfalls, ending at the upper pool with a view of Heaps Canyon. The changing aspen leaves make the view even more dramatic.

Zion in September offers smaller crowds, comfortable temperatures and autumn scenery at its finest. If solitude and nature are what you’re seeking, it’s an ideal off-season escape. I hope this hidden gem provides you the peace and wonder it has brought me.

Yellowstone National Park is one of my favourite places to escape the crowds in September. When I visited Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in September, I was blown away by the dramatic landscapes.

The summer crowds have dwindled, the weather is pleasant, and the fall foliage starts to emerge. It’s the perfect time to experience these iconic parks.

You can finally explore Yellowstone’s unique geothermal features, massive forests and stunning vistas without the usual throngs of people jostling for the best view or photo op.

Majestic Mountains

The Teton Range looms over Grand Teton National Park , with the Grand Teton peak towering nearly 14,000 feet high. In September, the snowcapped mountains reflect in the glassy lakes, and the aspens and cottonwoods provide a pop of bright yellow and orange against the rugged peaks.

Spotting moose, elk, and even grizzly bears in their natural habitat makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a wildlife documentary.

Driving the 42-mile scenic loop around Yellowstone National Park, you’ll see everything from massive waterfalls to bubbling mud pots to the Grand Prismatic Spring.

My jaw dropped at the Lower Falls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, where the Yellowstone River plummets 308 feet into a rocky gorge.

The sulphur smells and odd bubbling and gurgling sound around Mud Volcano and Sulphur Caldron were almost otherworldly. And of course, watching Old Faithful geyser erupt on schedule was a quintessential Yellowstone experience.

The dramatic landscapes of jagged peaks, lush forests, thundering waterfalls, colourful hot springs, and bison herds in these two iconic national parks left me in awe.

Escaping the big crowds of summer and seeing the subtle seasonal changes of fall made September the perfect time for a visit. If dramatic scenery and wildlife in a pristine setting call to you, put Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks at the top of your September travel list.

Fewer Crowds, Lower Prices

By September, accommodation rates in the park drop significantly from the high season. You’ll find lots of great deals on lodging and activities. The roads and attractions are much less congested, so you can leisurely drive the Grand Loop Road and spot wildlife along the way without worrying about traffic jams.

The weather in September is still pleasant, with average highs of 65 F, so you can comfortably enjoy outdoor activities.

Autumn Colours

One of the best reasons to visit Yellowstone in September is to see the autumn foliage. The park’s forests of quaking aspens and cottonwoods burst into a sea of gold and red, especially towards the end of the month.

Some of the best places to spot the changing leaves are the Hayden Valley, Lamar Valley and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The contrast of the autumn colours against the park’s volcanic landscapes is a sight not to be missed.

Overall, September is an ideal time for a dreamy getaway to Yellowstone without breaking the bank or your patience. The smaller crowds, lower prices and beautiful fall scenery make it worth braving the chance of colder weather.

A trip to Yellowstone in the autumn is sure to create cherished memories that will last long after the vibrant leaves have fallen.

Come September, the summer crowds have dwindled in New England, but the weather is still pleasant and the fall foliage is starting to emerge. This is one of my favourite times of year to explore this picturesque region.

The White Mountains offer stunning vistas of autumn colours against a backdrop of granite peaks. Take a scenic drive down the Kancamagus Highway, stopping at roadside pull-offs to snap photos of the fiery red and gold leaves.

For an easy hike with panoramic views, head to Arethusa Falls or Mount Pemigewasset. The crisp air and peaceful solitude make it a perfect escape from the bustle of everyday life.

After hiking, cosy up by a fireplace in a secluded mountain lodge-like The Notchland Inn. Or sample farm-fresh cuisine in a small town like Lincoln, where seasonal menus feature harvest fare like apples, squash, and pumpkins. A cider tasting at a local orchard is a must.

The summer crowds may have left, but New England’s natural beauty dazzles in the fall. Trade the beaches for the mountains and experience the region’s quieter, cosier side. The White Mountains offer an idyllic setting to unwind surrounded by autumn’s vibrant show.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, blanketing over 800 square miles of lush forest.

In September, the crowds have dwindled from the summer rush, and the autumn foliage is just starting to show its vibrant colours. This is the perfect time to experience the magic of America’s most popular national park.

There are over 800 miles of hiking trails for all skill levels. I highly recommend the Chimney Tops trail for panoramic views of the misty blue mountains.

The 4-mile roundtrip hike leads to a rocky summit with 360° vistas. Or try the quieter Middle Prong Trail, following an old logging railroad along a mossy creek. The park’s highest point, Clingmans Dome at 6,643 feet, has an easy 1/2 mile trail to its peak.

Discover Wildlife In Their Element

You’ll likely see black bears foraging for acorns, white-tailed deer grazing at dawn, wild turkeys strutting about, and bobcats prowling in the underbrush.

September is the peak month for synchronous fireflies – seeing thousands of fireflies flash in unison is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Book a guided tour to find the best viewing spots.

Breathtaking Picturesque Settings

There are gorgeous waterfalls, like the 80-foot Mingo Falls or the multi-tiered Toms Creek Falls. Or go boating on serene Fontana Lake, surrounded by thick woods. Stay in a secluded cabin and unwind on the porch swing, soaking in the solitude.

The Great Smokies in fall is a peaceful escape where you can reconnect with nature at your own pace. The autumn colours, mild weather, and lack of big crowds make September an ideal time for experiencing the wonder and tranquillity of this special place.

In the Pacific Northwest, head to Olympic National Park in Washington. This stunning park is massive, covering nearly a million acres, so it’s easy to avoid tourists.

One of my top picks is the Staircase region, with its old-growth rainforests, waterfalls and the North Fork Skokomish River. You might spot black bears, bobcats or Roosevelt elk if you’re lucky!

Down south, Congaree National Park in South Carolina is a perfect escape. This lush floodplain forest is home to some of the tallest trees in the eastern U.S.

Go canoeing or kayaking along Cedar Creek, hike the boardwalks at dusk when the heat has faded, and camp under a canopy of stars.

9. Las Vegas, Nevada

las-vegas-casino, night life, travel tips

Las Vegas is known for its bright lights, endless entertainment, and vibrant nightlife. While the glitz and glam are entertaining, I prefer the natural wonders surrounding this neon oasis.

In September, the crowds die down as the temperatures decrease, making it an ideal time to explore the area’s scenic attractions.

Just a 30-minute drive from the Strip, Red Rock Canyon State Park is a perfect escape from the city. Massive red sandstone formations, hiking trails for all skill levels, and desert scenery make this a favourite spot for outdoor recreation.

The 13-mile scenic drive offers panoramic views from the comfort of your car. For a more rugged experience, there are over 20 miles of hiking trails to discover.

About an hour north of Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park contains breathtaking red Aztec sandstone formations and petrified wood. It’s one of the best places to see a sunset , with the rock formations glowing bright orange as the sun dips below the horizon.

There are hiking trails, campsites, and picnic areas throughout the park. Pack a lunch, bring your camera, and spend a day exploring this geologic wonderland.

While the glamour of Vegas will always draw crowds, the natural surroundings offer an escape into solitude. Take a drive to Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire state parks in September and experience the desert’s rugged beauty, minus the usual throngs of tourists. The stunning scenery will make you wonder why you don’t visit more often.

The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina is one of my favourite places to escape the crowds in September. This scenic byway winds through the Appalachian Mountains, with stunning vistas of rolling hills and foggy valleys.

In September, the autumn colours start to emerge, with red maples, orange sassafras and yellow tulip poplars dotting the landscape.

The summer heat has faded, leaving crisp, cool weather perfect for hiking some of the parkway’s many trails. You may spot wildlife like black bears, white-tailed deer or wild turkeys along the roadside.

My must-see stops include:

  • Peaks of Otter for panoramic views of 3 mountain peaks rising up from a pristine lake. There are short hiking trails to the summits and boat rentals on the lake.
  • Mabry Mill, a historic gristmill where you can watch millers in action with stone-ground cornmeal and buckwheat pancakes.
  • Cumberland Knob, the parkway’s starting point in North Carolina with an easy hike to the summit.

The slower pace means fewer crowds, especially if you visit during the week. Find an overlook, spread out a picnic blanket and just soak in the solitude.

The Blue Ridge Parkway’s natural beauty combined with the quiet of September makes for a peaceful escape I relish each year.

10. San Francisco, California

Northern Italy food tour, San Francisco, USA

San Francisco is one of my favourite cities to visit in September. The summer crowds have dwindled, the fog is lifting, and the city is waking up after a long summer.

Golden Gate Park is stunning in September. The park is blanketed in a sea of orange and red leaves, and the summer fog has mostly burned off, leaving bright blue skies.

Head to Stow Lake to rent a boat, or just stroll around taking in the autumn colours. On Sundays, check out the roller skaters at 6th Ave & JFK Drive.

Fisherman’s Wharf is way more pleasant in September without the usual throngs of tourists. Grab some clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, watch the sea lions basking in the sun at Pier 39, and catch a street performer or two.

The Wharf has a really festive vibe in September as the city gears up for Fleet Week and Halloween.

The Powell-Hyde cable car line is a fun way to see the city in September. The smaller crowds mean you can usually get a spot on the running board to take in the views. Hop on at Powell & Market, ride over Nob Hill, and end near Ghirardelli Square for some hot fudge sundaes.

September is one of the best months to experience San Francisco without big crowds and warm summer weather. Pack a light jacket, rent a bike , and go explore the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods, stunning vistas and world-class cuisine. The summer haze has cleared, and the city sparkles once again.

11. Port Royal Island, South Carolina

Port Royal Island is one of the lesser-known gems of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. As a local, I’ve spent many quiet weekends enjoying its natural scenery and history without the crowds.

Miles of undeveloped beach stretch along Port Royal Island’s coastline. My favourite spots are near the tip of the island at Battery Creek and Station Creek.

The soft white sand and swaying sea oats make it feel like stepping back in time. Keep an eye out for dolphins playing just offshore. If you want to sunbathe in solitude, arrive early to claim your stretch of sand.

The Gullah people, descendants of West African slaves, have lived on Port Royal Island for centuries. Their culture is still evident in the local cuisine, arts, and language.

To experience Gullah culture firsthand, visit nearby St. Helena Island. Check out the Penn Centre, a pivotal location in the civil rights movement, or catch a performance of the Gullah Kinfolk. The colourful “Gullah Grub” cuisine, like okra gumbo, fried shrimp, and hoppin’ John, is also a must-try.

Port Royal Island’s network of rivers, creeks, and marshes provides the perfect playground for kayaking and paddleboarding. Rent gear to explore the winding water trails at your own pace. Paddle under moss-draped oaks and you may spot egrets, herons, otters, and alligators in their natural habitat.

For history buffs, the ruins of old rice plantations and forts dot the shorelines. The temperate September weather, with highs in the mid-70s and low 80s F, makes it an ideal time to get out on the water.

From unspoiled beaches to Gullah culture and kayaking, Port Royal Island offers a peaceful escape for any interest. And the smaller crowds in September mean you can soak in the Lowcountry ambience without the usual throngs of tourists. Discover this under-the-radar gem for yourself.

One of my favourite hidden gems is Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon. This urban park spans the Willamette River, offering walking and biking paths with gorgeous views of the city skyline.

In September, the summer crowds have dwindled but the weather is still pleasant. I like to rent a bike and cycle the loop around the park at a leisurely pace, stopping for photos of the Hawthorne Bridge and watching crew teams rowing on the river.

The park is also home to the Portland Saturday Market – the perfect place to find unique handmade crafts from local artisans.

On the west side of the river, you’ll find the International Rose Test Garden. Even though the main rose season is over, the garden is still open and admission is free. The fragrance of the remaining blooms mingles with the crisp fall air. It’s the ideal place for a picnic lunch with a thermos of hot apple cider.

As evening falls, head to the Eastbank Esplanade for dinner at one of the casual food carts, like Viking Soul Food or Whole Bowl. Then grab a spot on the grass to watch the sunset paint vibrant colours across the sky.

The Esplanade stays open until midnight, so you can take an after-dinner stroll along the riverwalk.

Waterfront Park captures the laid-back vibe of Portland. In September, you’ll find smaller crowds, lower prices and a chance to enjoy the park at your own pace. It’s an easy escape from the usual tourist track with natural scenery and city life combined. Definitely add it to your list for an off-season adventure!

The beach town of Myrtle Beach on South Carolina’s Atlantic coast is an ideal September escape. The summer crowds have dwindled, accommodation rates have dropped, and the ocean is still warm enough for swimming.

Embrace Serenity And Escape The Crowds

After Labour Day, the beach boardwalks and attractions calm down as families head back to school.

You’ll have more space to yourself on the wide, sandy beaches and it’s easier to find a good spot at one of the beach bars or restaurants along the boardwalk promenade.

The pace is more relaxed without the rush of the peak summer season.

The beach is stunning in September, with warm ocean temperatures averaging 77 F, so you can comfortably swim, sunbathe, go boating or try beach activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, or beach yoga.

The Atlantic hurricane season also peaks in September, so check the forecast and be prepared for storms. But when sunny weather arrives after a storm, the clouds part to reveal crisp, bright blue skies.

Deals And Events You Can’t Miss

Accommodation rates drop by up to 50% after Labour Day weekend, from beachfront resorts to beach houses and condos. It’s a great time to score a deal on an extended beach getaway.

Some attractions like amusement parks may have shorter hours, but many live music venues, golf courses, shopping and dining options remain open.

Local events include the Beach Bike Week motorcycle rally, the South Carolina Pecan Festival and several food, wine and craft beer festivals.

Escape the last of the summer heat and crowds for a quieter beach getaway on the South Carolina coast.

14. Wine Country In Sonoma, California

September is one of my favourite months to travel around the U.S. The summer crowds have dwindled, the temperatures are mild, and the autumn foliage starts to emerge in some areas.

One of my top picks for an under-the-radar September destination is Sonoma County in Northern California. This picturesque region is home to world-class vineyards, farm-to-table dining, and outdoor adventures.

Sonoma is best known for its stunning wineries and vineyards. With over 425 wineries spread across the valley, you’ll have no shortage of tasting rooms to visit.

Some of my favourites are Gundlach Bundschu, the oldest family-run winery in California, and St. Francis Winery, with its rustic tasting room and sprawling vineyards.

If big crowds aren’t your thing, head to some of the smaller, family-owned wineries off the beaten path. Most are very welcoming to drop-ins and you’ll get to chat with the winemakers as you sample their handcrafted vintages.

In between winery visits, dine at one of the farm-to-table restaurants featuring locally sourced ingredients. Or get outside and go hiking, biking or kayaking.

The Russian River is a perfect spot for outdoor recreation with towering redwoods lining its banks. The pace in September is unhurried, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings.

Sonoma offers the perfect wine country escape without the usual throngs of tourists. I highly recommend visiting this little slice of heaven in the fall.

15. Santa Fe, New Mexico

When I visited Santa Fe, I was eager to learn more about the native Puebloan peoples who’ve called this area home for centuries. One of the best places to start is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centre.

This cultural centre and museum is owned and operated by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. It’s a great place to learn about the history, art, and traditions of the Puebloan people.

I spent hours exploring the museum, which houses artefacts, traditional clothing, tools, and other items used in daily and ceremonial life. The centre also features native dances, storytelling, and craft demonstrations.

While there, I watched a pottery demonstration and learned how local Puebloan potters create their distinctive black-on-black and red-on-red pottery using traditional coiling methods. I also took a short class on blue corn tortilla making, where I helped grind the corn and then pat out tortillas by hand.

The cultural centre provides an authentic glimpse into New Mexico’s First Nations in an informative yet casual way. By the end of my visit, I felt I had a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the Puebloan way of life – past and present.

If you want to experience the living culture of New Mexico’s native communities, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centre is a must-see.

The dramatic Badlands landscape comes alive in September, with golden prairies and jagged peaks minus the big tour buses. I like to go hiking in the backcountry where I might spot bighorn sheep or prairie dogs peeking out of their burrows.

The stargazing here is unparalleled too, with the Milky Way splashed brightly across the night sky.

Autumn arrives early in the Berkshires, with the rolling hills exploding in oranges and reds. I head here to meander country lanes, shop for antiques, and catch a show at the historic Colonial Theatre.

The throngs of summer visitors have dwindled, so I can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the Housatonic River or a picnic in the tranquil grounds of the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Whale-watching season lasts until October in the San Juan Islands, and the ferry rides to these rugged isles are blissfully uncrowded. I like to go sea kayaking, beachcombing for shells and driftwood, or just find a secluded cove to curl up with a book.

The lodges offer great shoulder season deals, and the local fare – think fresh seafood, craft ciders, and homemade pie – is delicious. A perfect Pacific Northwest escape!

Nestled in upstate New York, the Finger Lakes offer a tranquil escape surrounded by picturesque gorges, waterfalls and wineries. The summer tourists have headed home, so you can leisurely explore the area’s natural beauty and world-class Rieslings without the crowds.

Stay in a cosy bed and breakfast, go hiking in one of the region’s many state parks, or simply sit back and enjoy the changing leaves reflected in the deep blue lakes.

cedar key florida, september in usa

For a taste of Old Florida, head to the tiny Gulf Coast town of Cedar Key. Once a thriving port city, Cedar Key now moves at a snail’s pace.

Rent a bike or golf cart and explore the historic downtown, dine on fresh seafood along the docks as the sun sets over the marsh, or charter a boat to one of the secluded barrier islands.

The summer heat and storms have passed, but the water is still warm enough for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Cedar Key offers a perfect beach getaway without the crowds in September.

New England shines in September, especially Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park in Maine. The summer tourists and their RVs have left, letting you enjoy the rugged coastline, historic carriage roads and Cadillac Mountain in relative solitude.

Go whale watching, soak in the view of the harbour from Bar Harbour, or hike through forests of red, gold and orange in the autumn air. Wrap up your days with a cup of chowder or a lobster roll as a fire crackles nearby. Bliss.

The summer holidays are coming to an end, and parents across the globe are desperate for some peace and quiet. It isn’t as simple as that, obviously, but September offers a different travel atmosphere from the one experienced in the heady days of summer.

The weather is altogether more temperate, for a start, which can be a brilliant thing, and from rural wine tours to lazy beach stays , the best places to travel in September are a blissful collection of everything this beautiful world has to offer. Best places to travel in September

1.  marseille, france.

Marseille, France

Ready to leave your heart in the South of France? Marseille is having a moment right now, and for good reason. I had the chance to spend a few nights there before a cruise, and it was magical; Palais Longchamp is a stunning architectural feat (and perfect for a cheeky photo op), and you can spend your days hopping between contemporary art galleries and museums. Grab coffee from an old waterfront café lining the Old Port and fresh baguettes from the market, and when evening comes, discover intimate jazz venues tucked away in alleyways. The best part? Marseille stays sizzling – in  September the weather stays at a soul-warming 25C. You heard us!

2.  Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, Japan

Japan’s most romantic city shines brightest in September. The weather is gorgeous, and the hotel prices plummet to make up for the out-of-season demand. How this is out of season, we don’t know, but there’s no need to complain. The autumn colours are staggeringly beautiful, and the end of summer is signified by several festivals and street events. This includes the  Seiryu-e Dragon Festival happening on 15 September this year, in which a  dancing blue dragon marches into cobbled streets. It is surrounded by men dressed in traditional warrior clothes, and the streets are filled with music and spectacular dancing. What a sight to behold!

3.  Montenegro

Montenegro

The days of Montenegro being a little secret paradise are long gone, and Kotor is every bit as busy as Dubrovnik during summer. September, however, is a blissful time to visit as the crowds thin out and the history and culture of this fascinating little country take centre stage. Perast (just down the road from Kotor) is the pick of the coast, while culture vultures should make a beeline for Cetinje (the royal capital) and the indomitable Mount Lovćen, the final resting place of 19th-century prince-poet Njegoš.

4.  Eswatini

Eswatini

A relatively new international airport and an improved network of roads across the country make travelling to and around this underrated kingdom much easier – so get in there before everyone else does. This entirely landlocked country provides excellent mountain hikes, opportunities for rafting, zip-lining and mountain biking adventures, plus there’s plenty of wildlife – especially rhinos. Visit in September for springtime flowers and to get there before the sticky summer rainy season begins in October.

Average temp in September: 22C/72F

5.  British Columbia, Canada

British Columbia, Canada

The jaw-to-the-floor wilderness of British Columbia is best seen in burnt amber. Fly into the outdoorsy city  of Vancouver  to acclimatise, with walking trails,  parks  and coastal hikes close to food trucks and buzzing neighbourhoods such as ex-warehouse district Yaletown and historic Gastown (Vancouver Island is also nearby for some of the best autumn colours). Then to really feel a sense of escape, head out to the majestic forested mountains and glaciers in Northern British Columbia. Or if nature with wild swimming, local wine and a bit more proximity to civilisation is more your jam, try the Okanagan Valley. Don't miss the famous Vancouver International Film Festival while you're there.

6.  Munich, Germany

Munich, Germany

From beer halls to underground jazz clubs and museums, the Bavarian capital has a lot going for it at any time of year – but the real party starts in September. More than six million people visit Munich to drink about two million gallons of beer every year for Oktoberfest, which arrives early in Germany. Attend it in  Theresienwiese from 21 September to 6 October 2024.  Over the years, the start of the folk festival has crept forward, and now the mass enjoyment of traditional German cuisine, wiener dog races, lederhosen and polka music lasts from mid-September to early October.

7.  Cali, Colombia

Cali, Colombia

Sure, Cartagena and Medellin have been filling up your Insta feed for years now, but the south of the country is still under the radar. And with its notorious local cartel bosses in jail, Cali is becoming  Colombia ’s next big thing. Known for its smoking-hot dancing, Cali has more than 200 registered salsa schools. In September, the annual Festival Mundial de Salsa is held here, so visit for free shows, live music and spontaneous dancing in its cobbled streets as the best international salsa talent congregates in technicolour costumes to shake a collective tail feather.

8.  Lille, France

Lille, France

This good-looking, underrated northern French city has a lot going for it. Beyond its cobbled streets, Flemish houses and art nouveau buildings, Lille also has some impressively sculpted modern architecture, such as the Lille Métropole Museum of Modern, Contemporary and Outsider Art and the elliptical Stade Pierre-Mauroy. While design buffs might want to hold out for the WDC street festival in December, everyone else should visit in September for Europe’s biggest flea market, Braderie de Lille, which has developed into a massive street party. It’s been going since 1127, and you know what they say: practice makes perfect. And obviously you can't visit France this year without catching a glimpse of one of the Olympic matches so check out the Paralympic Games that are taking place from  28th August to 8th September 2024.

9.  Boston, USA

Boston, USA

There are lots of reasons to love Boston:  lobster rolls , the characterful charm that comes from being one of the oldest cities in the US, and its major-league sports teams. The city’s home to NFL legends the New England Patriots and baseball bros the Red Sox – and the seasons for both sports coincide in September, so if stadiums are welcoming the public again, you’ll be able to catch (at least) one game of each while you’re in town. Sports not your thing? Boston is a total beaut in  foliage season ; for a tree-mendous leaf-peeping trail, wander through the  Public Garden , then through the cobbled streets and brownstones of  Beacon Hill  and along the  Charles River Esplanade . And to find the best of the city in one place, visit Time Out Market Boston ,which is open all year round.

10.  Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Ayia Napa, Cyprus

This small resort town is situated in Cyprus’s south-east corner, and make no mistake: it's not just for partying. There's a little bit of something for everyone here; beaches for sunbathing, great food and the city's must-sees, its archaic caves and monastery. With the temperature ranging in the mid 20's, September is the perfect time to visit this place to avoid the blazing heat and the, err, typical holiday crowd. Don’t miss the spectacular views from the  Cape Greco National Forest Park .

Average temp in September: 25C/77F

It is not the first time that organizers have chosen Greece for their established annual excursion, as they had repeated it in 2014 and 2015. This time the cars have been divided into categories and taking trips to most of mainland Greece, starting with Athens to Patras and Thessaloniki and overnight stays in Ioannina, Pylos, Kamena Vourla, Porto Heli, and Spetses.

Owners of classic or vintage cars, that is to say a car with a minimum age of 25 years or older, are always looking out for new events to participate in with their showpiece. “Tour Amical” is therefore high on their list, and this rally has now grown into the biggest rally for Classic Cars in Belgium for good reason.

Since 2001, a gathering of a few friends has turned into a true household word. Now, the “Tour Amical”, organised by Manu Stappaerts, numbers no fewer than 172 cars, which took part in a tour around Greece from the 8th to 14th of May. With 5 cars from Antwerp to Tarifa in 2001 with 8 cars from Antwerp to Florence in 2005 with 30 cars from Antwerp to Marbella in 2007 with 60 cars from Biarritz to Barcelona in 2010 with 82 cars from Antwerp to Sofia in 2012 and in May 2014, with 172 cars from Thessaloniki to Athens and back.

The Tour Amical expands by leaps and bounds each year and will also welcome international participants. All participants attempted to drive to the end of the rally. Besides the event’s enjoyable and competitive aspects, bonds of friendship were also tightened and business deals concluded, for networking was also alive in this men only Tour.

There were different routes for each of the four groups, but fortunately, they coincided along the way, creating opportunities to exchange tales about their heavenly experiences in mythical Greece.

A wonderful closing event was planned with prize-giving ceremony and performances by some well-known Belgian entertainers.

Competition is underway at nearly every venue at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games , from the purple athletics track of the Stade de France to the red clay courts of the Roland-Garros Stadium and the blue waters of the Paris La Defense Arena . Over 4,400 Para athletes are competing across 11 days of competition.

Highlights for 31 August – 2 September include the Para triathlon competition, where athletes will start and finish at the scenic Pont Alexandre III . All races are scheduled for 1 September.

Elsewhere, the dynamic action of wheelchair rugby will take over the Champ de Mars Arena , with eight mixed teams competing in this full-contact sport. The finals day of Para taekwondo features stacked competition, including the men's K44 +80kg gold medal match. Team USA’s Evan Medell won bronze in the Paralympic sport's debut at Tokyo 2020 despite breaking his foot in the semi-final. The fighter is back and ready to go for gold.

In the pool, Great Britain’s Iona Winnifrith will make her highly-anticipated Paralympic debut . The 13-year-old is already a double European champion, and her time of 1.39:29 in the SB7 100m breaststroke on the opening day of competition in Portugal earlier this year set a British and European record.

Also looking to break records is USA’s 16-time Paralympic gold medallist Jessica Long who is set to compete in the women’s S8 100m backstroke . The five-time Paralympian will also compete in the S8 200m individual medley (1 September), S8 400m freestyle (4 September) and S8 100m butterfly (7 September), as she looks to extend her incredible medal haul in France.

1 September: Preview and athletes to watch

Japan and Colombia get the blind football competition underway at the iconic Eiffel Tower Stadium, while Norway’s Birgit Skarstein is set to defend her women's single sculls PR1W1x Para rowing title after winning gold at Tokyo 2020 .

Two-time men’s PTWC Para triathlon champion from the Netherlands, Jetze Plat , is looking to make it three titles at Paris 2024. Plat competed in the 2023 Para triathlon test event, saying, “It was difficult, but in the end it was a really good test". Expectation is reaching fever pitch for the champion Para triathlete and two-time Para cycling gold medallist who will compete in the main event at the Pont Alexandre III in the French capital.

Three-time Para archery competitor, Team USA’s Matt Stutzman will make his fourth Paralympic appearance at Paris 2024. The double world champion, who is best known as 'The Armless Archer', will be looking to add to his London 2012 silver medal.

Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Sarah Storey will be looking to defend her title on the Para cycling track in the women's C5 individual pursuit. Storey is the most decorated athlete in the history of the Paralympics , with 17 gold medals across eight Games. Paris 2024 will make it nine Paralympic Games for the superstar.

Woodhall, the husband of Olympic champion long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall , has sights set on getting his own gold medal after earning silver in the men’s 200m T44 and a bronze in the 400m T44 at Rio 2016 .

The day will finish with medals being decided in wheelchair rugby as Great Britain looks to defend their title. The competition will be stiff, with previous Paralympic champions USA and Australia expected to put it all on the line to regain their crowns.

The lazy, hazy days of summer are over – but September is the new January , and the perfect time for new adventures. So where are the best holiday destinations in September? See how South America is blooming: not only the jacaranda trees and their bursts of blue-violet, but the exciting high cuisine, design and arts scenes exploding everywhere from Argentina ’s always chic capital to the Peruvian Andes. Looking for a final boost of D vitamins to carry you into the last quarter? It’s the sweet shoulder season for a number of exotic, sugar-sand islands. Or discover a new beach in Europe — the mercury stays high the further you explore south or east. Better still, there are sustainable ways to enjoy even the most opulent of these getaways. Read on for inspiration on where to go on holiday in September.

Tuscany rolling hills landscape

Tuscany, Italy

Temperature in September: 27℃ high; 17℃ low Season: summer Travel time from UK: 2 hours 15 minutes Time difference: BST+1

September ushers a light pre-autumn breeze through this most gorgeous Italian region, after three or so months of intense heat. It’s still warm enough for poolside lounging and al-fresco suppers on the grounds of historic villas and grand hotels, but the temperatures ease off enough as the month progresses for adventure seekers, hikers and culture vultures to explore. While buses and trains run through this corner of the country, it’s more reliable to hire a car for a short trip. This grants reliable access to historic cities, towns, and villages, from the museums and visible Medici legacy of Tuscany’s capital, Florence, to the fairytale scenes of San Gimignano.

Where to stay

Tuscany is an ideal destination for intergenerational escapes, so round up the family and secure a dreamy villa through a company such as Oliver's Travels or Airbnb . For a romantic trip far from the city heat, check into Castello di Vicarello – a renovated 12th-century castle run by a family with a keen eye for immaculate design.

United Kingdom England Cornwall Fishing village Polperro Harbour

Cornwall, UK

Temperature in September: 17°C high; 13°C low Season: summer Time difference: BST+0

The golden sands, clear waters and charming towns of Cornwall have long been a favourite staycation spot among Britons. However, visit once the schools return after the extended summer break, and it’s a relatively adults-only haven. Granted, the weather might not be as reliable as it is in July and August, but there are still balmy days to be had. Time a visit with the St Ives September Festival and see the stunning seaside resort at its buzziest, as local venues host live music and events for two weeks.

Perfect Stays has some of the most exceptional homes in the county on its rental roster, with a team on hand to ensure any requirements are met for group and family trips. For an indulgent hotel stay, look no further than Fowey Hall Hotel , a stately hotel a short way from Coombe Haven Beach.

Sicily

Sicily, Italy

Temperature in September: 24°C high; 17°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 3 hours 10 minutes Time difference: BST+1

When isn't a good time to go to Sicily ? The warm wind that blows across the Mediterranean from Africa keeps Italy 's sunniest, most richly cultured island hot well into autumn (you might still get a heatwave), though its wild and beautiful beaches are never crowded in September; yet it's cool enough for exploring the labyrinthine streets of its enchanting baroque towns. Memorable meals are to be had everywhere – September is a fine time for fruit and produce from Etna's rich national park; and there's no problem getting a room in the charming hotels.

Where to stay: At Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo , where pool views look good from all angles and a pianist (and Negronis) cajole couples to dance on the balcony against a menacing backdrop of Mount Etna. If you're looking for a city break, take over this sleek Palermo apartment that's within walking distance of all the iconic spots. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Sicily .

The Cotswolds, United Kingdom

Temperature in September: 19°C high; 9°C low Season: autumn Travel time from London: 2 hours 30 minutes by car Time difference: BST+0

Simply one of the loveliest places in the world, at any time of year, the Cotswolds. Its loveliness wraps itself around you like the early morning mist among the orchards; its drystone cottages and honeycomb-coloured Cotswold stone buildings, ancient and eternal, clambered all over by rambling roses and wisteria; its trickling rivers and weeping willows and wild swans; gentle landscapes and the quaintness of its beautiful villages , and all those country-house hotels for a weekend break in the UK . September brings the harvest, when the local produce is at its best, and the hunter's rich pickings are cooked magnificently in all of the best restaurants in the Cotswolds .

Where to stay: We love Thyme , an idyllic old Cotswold-stone manor with beautifully renovated barns. The Stump is a cosy roadside-inn-turned-pizza-shack just six miles from Cirencester. If you're travelling in a group, takeover No.6 , a converted barn that sleeps 10 and set on the edge of the Blenheim Palace Estate in Oxfordshire. See our favourite hotels in the Cotswolds for more recommendations.

Lisbon, Portugal

Temperature in September: 26°C high; 17°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes Time difference: BST+0

It’s no mystery Lisbon is so popular these days. What’s not to like? Afternoons are for climbing its seven hills in search of the best miradouros – terraces with poetic views over its pastel houses and red rooftops – while evenings are best spent in Lisbon's best restaurants , where sensational seafood is fresh from the neighbouring ocean. Night-owls make a beeline for Bairro Alto. Lax open-container laws make the city’s central district a party – join and drink in the dawn. September has fabulous weather – averages of 26°C – and you’ll get the city to yourself, as the unlucky masses have gone back to school.

Where to stay: The Ivens gets our pick for one of the best new(ish) hotels in the world, while Memmo Alfama might just have the best rooftop pool in the city. For a budget stay, try The Independente , a charming hotel-meets-hostel where rooms are from £100 a night. If you'd like to stay close to the sea, this beach apartment is on Costa da Caparica, one of the best beaches in Lisbon . See more options at our edit of the best hotels in Lisbon .

Galway, Ireland

Temperature in September: 17°C high; 10°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 1 hour 25 minutes Time difference: BST+0

Ireland’s most scenic city is a blast any time of year, but the Galway International Oyster Festival is an excellent reason for going in September. On the last weekend of the month, the beginning of the native oyster harvest is celebrated with parades, the World Oyster Opening Championships (really) and devotees slurping hundreds of the delicacies with stout and Champagne. Sitting pretty on the River Corrib, the harbour town has always been a favourite for its waterside views, snug pubs and super-fresh seafood. But today, it’s also a standard-bearer for west-coast produce, leading the way in local, organic, farm-to-fork cooking (see Michelin-starred Loam’s seasonal tasting menus). A bit of contemporary culture comes courtesy of Coffeewerk + Press: part third-wave coffeehouse, part art gallery, part design shop. Galway’s sustainable food scene isn’t just limited to Michelin-starred affairs such as Loam. Other pioneers include Tartare Café and Wine Bar (local, farm-fresh ingredients; organic and natural wines; compostable cups and napkins), Kai (as well as serving a daily-changing menu of local ingredients, the restaurant recycles all its waste, with around 25 per cent of it converted into fuel) and Dela, which grows its own produce, allowing for a ‘plot to plate time of minutes’.

Where to stay: Wild Honey Inn in County Clare, Ireland’s first Michelin-star pub.

Santorini, Greece

Temperature in September: 26°C high; 20°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 4 hours Time difference: BST+2

Ask an islander what their favourite month on Santorini is, and they'll likely tell you September. The boiling, broiling summer rush is over, the sea is warmer than ever and the skies are blue, blue, all day long, and the evenings are cooler in its up-steps-and-down hillside towns. September sunsets paint the town of Oia gold, and the deep blues of the Caldera seem heightened in these days of late summer.

Where to stay: For a romantic stay, check in to Andronis Boutique Hotel , where rooms are dotted around the curves of the hotel's traditional cave-style architecture. For families, The Vasilicos is a boutique hideaway and one of the few hotels on the island that doesn't have an adults-only policy. We also love Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection , a white-washed, cliff-side dream where all the rooms have terraces and there are two pools. See our best hotels in Santorini guide for more.

Temperature in September: 33°C high; 19°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK : 3 hours 35 minutes Time difference: BST +0

Morocco saturates the senses. See Marrakech ’s chaotic medinas; the raggedly isolated mud-wall towns of the High Atlas; Essaouira ’s salty sea air and sun-dappled surf. All are at their finest in September. As the summer sizzle mellows, both Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts remain bikini-balmy, while the winter chill that grasps desert nights and mountain villages is yet to take hold. And a smart new crop of design hotels – typically airy riads with crisp courtyard pools, renovated by French fashion photographers and Italian aristocrats – makes Morocco an especially stylish place to lay one’s head. Fez, a vast, medieval warren of a city, has been busy restoring its ancient buildings and monuments, so there’s no end of historic houses, palaces and secret gardens, mosques and mausoleums to explore. Note: you'll see a lot of working horses and donkeys in Morocco – happily, many of them are protected by SPANA , an international organisation that works with some of the world’s poorest communities to improve the welfare of working animals, and to educate their handlers in animal rights. So if you’re offered a horse and cart ride, and the horse is wearing a SPANA tag (often around the ankle), go for it: your money validates SPANA’s efforts.

Where to stay: Within the city, La Mamounia and Royal Mansour top our list of the best hotels in Marrakech . In Taghazout , Munga Guesthouse is a 15-room boutique stay with an fairylit, indoor-outdoor restaurant. For Essaouira, the cool Riad Dar Maya is all sand-coloured plaster and modern Moroccan minimalism with a hot tub on the roof.

New York, United States

Temperature in September: 25°C high; 16°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 8 hours Time difference: BST-5

New York we love you, every day of the year, but possibly in September most of all. For the weather, for the new season, and all the fresher air of autumn and possibility of a new season and that new season's styles, the way the city gears up again after sultry, away-on-Long Island August. (Yes, for that matter, Long Island is lovely end-of-season in September, too, from the Hamptons to Montauk .) Or combine New York City with an Upstate New York roadtrip to the Catskills , all that autumnal mellow mistiness and sense of nostalgia for a thing you never even had, listening to the Grateful Dead as you wind through the trees to your log cabin.

Where to stay: Try the Ace Hotel in Brooklyn or Pendry Manhattan West in Midtown, both featured on our 2022 Hot List of the best new hotels in the world. Downtown, buzzy spots like PUBLIC Hotel on the Lower East Side and Hotel 50 Bowery in Chinatown are great for nightlife and people watching. See our pick of the best hotels in New York for more.

Ibiza and Formentera, Spain

Temperature in September: 27°C high; 19°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 2 hours 30 minutes Time difference: BST+1

Those crazy free spirits who spend the season out in Ibiza and Formentera breathe a sigh of relief when September comes. At last you can get a spot to shake out your towel on the beaches again, and a table for lunch at a beach restaurant without so much as a booking (even at Formentera's famous Juan y Andrea). It's all still hot, hot, hot, the closing parties are the clubbing highlights of the season, and hotels and villas suddenly become a lot more affordable – though you'll still have to take out a loan for drinks. Embracing the White Isle’s natural assets is the best way to make a trip here sustainable. La Granja , for example, is a chic inland farmstead that serves slow food from its own biodynamic garden, and works with the Ibiza Preservation Fund to support the island’s organic farmers. In it for the beaches? Rent a solar-powered charter yacht from La Bella Verde and explore the coast’s quieter corners.

Where to stay: OKU Ibiza , a laid-back luxury retreat with a privileged location that gives you access to the most beautiful beach spots on the island. For sunbeds and sushi, it's hard to beat the chic set up at Nobu Ibiza bay . See more options at our best hotels in Ibiza edit or check out our round-up of the best villas in Ibiza and Formentera .

Mexico City, Mexico

Temperature in September: 24°C high; 12°C low Season: wet Travel time from UK: 11 hours 25 minutes Time difference: BST -7

Massive, messy Mexico City has never been cooler. The lively capital’s young, artsy vibe is everywhere: at the colourful cafés clad in geometric-print tiles; in chic, farm-fresh brunches and craft cocktails blended with home-brewed botanicals; at the urban market in an old auto parts warehouse hawking local designers. September is the last drop of rainy season, which keeps this always-busy megalopolis short of tourists; what they don’t know is the rain tends to come at night, and in quick, sudden fits. By day, it’s 25°C and perfect for nibbling on street eats (pick your lime-doused grilled corn straight from the wheelbarrow) or exploring the city’s most fashionable 'hood: leafy, bohemian Roma Norte. (yes, of Oscar-winning film fame).

Where to stay: Octavia Casa , a seven-room retreat in La Condesa created by Fashion designer Roberta Maceda. We also love Circulo Mexicano for its calming Shaker-simple bedrooms and chilled-out rooftop with pool and Japanese soaking tub.

Corfu, Greece

Temperature in September: 28°C high; 17°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 3 hours 5 minutes Time difference: BST+2

The shoulder seasons – April-May, September-October – tend to be the most pleasant time to visit Greece and the Greek islands . But blue as the Ionian Sea is, it's still chilly in springtime – so we will plump for September in Corfu, when our morning swim is a warm and delicious affair, when the island's forested hills are still green for afternoon dozes beneath the oaks and olive trees.

Where to stay: At Domes Miramare , which was once the summer mansion of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and is now an adults-only hotel standing above its own private beach. Families should look to Grecotel Corfu Imperial , glamorous resort where many of the rooms and bungalows have private pools. See more at our best hotels in Corfu guide.

Istanbul, Turkey

Temperature in September: 25°C high; 17°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 3 hours 50 minutes Time difference: BST+2

Istanbul has always been a cultural giant. It straddles two continents and sits on a major branch of the Silk Road , so pretty much every marauder has left their mark here through the ages, creating a city that’s richly diverse in its art, food and mood. And every September, the Turkish capital proves its contemporary cultural chops with the art fair Contemporary Istanbul, where show-stopping installations, sculptures and canvases showcase the region’s most intriguing works. For more cutting-edge Istanbul, head to Beyoğlu, the ultimate good-times hood. When not at a gig, boutique shopping or bar-hopping, check out New Anatolian Cuisine at Mikla, where the lamb-shank dumplings with smoked buffalo yogurt might just change your life.

Where to stay: Soho House Istanbul is set in a 19th-century palace in the city's coolest district. For more options, see our pick of the best hotels in Istanbul .

Hermanus, South Africa

Temperature in September: 20°C high; 12°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 11 hours 30 minutes Time difference: BST+2

Less than two hours’ drive from Cape Town , Hermanus has grown from fishing village to popular seaside destination for good reason: it offers the world’s best land-based whale-watching. Come in late September, when the Hermanus Whale Festival celebrates peak season for southern right whales breaching close to shore. Though the fest brings heaps of entertainment – live music, vintage car shows, street food, kids’ activities – spare some time for exploring Hermanus beyond the crowds. It’s at its very best on gorgeous cliffside walks, secluded white-sand beaches (Voëlklip is made for picnicking), or at refined countryside restaurants – The Restaurant at Newton Johnson is set on its own farm, overlooking the winery’s vines. If you're keen to spot some whales, land-based whale watching is about as un-invasive as it gets, and saves on pollution produced by boats. So, while plenty of operations offer whale-watching boat tours here, why bother when the view is so good from terra firma? Hermanus even has its own ‘whale crier’, who helpfully roams around blowing on a kelp horn to alert you to sightings.

Where to stay: Birkenhead House , a coastal hotel with a pool terrace overlooking the ocean.

Milan, Italy

Temperature in September: 24°C high; 16°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 2 hours Time difference: BST+1

It is a surprising fact that it rains more in Milan than in Manchester . Still, never let bad weather stand in the way of a truly splendid city break. Go in September, which has the fewest rainy days of any month in Milan, and an average daytime temperature of 24ºC. Go new-season shopping and spend too much money on some excellent boots which will keep your feet dry and make you happy in the cold, wet months ahead. Or go to Manchester , and tell everyone that it may be raining, but at least it's not as wet as Milan.

Where to stay: Try the Four Seasons Hotel Milano for a luxurious stay in the city centre or checkin to the Hotel Principe di Savoia , one of the city's grand dames. See more on our edit of the best hotels in Milan .

Barcelona, Spain

Temperature in September: 26°C high; 20°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 2 hours 10 minutes Time difference: BST+1

It's definitely still sunshine season in September in Barcelona – temperatures average around 25ºC in the daytime, a balmy 19ºC at night. The locals are back from their holidays, but everyone's still going to the beach and eating out and partying like mad to make the most of the last days of summer. Catalonia's national holiday is on 11 September, when the city closes for parades, concerts and celebrations, and the Fiestas de la Mercè is a week-long festival, the biggest of the year, with hundreds of musicians and carnivals, performances and gigs, planned and impromptu, all over the city.

Where to stay: Design-lovers should make a beeline for The Hoxton in Pobelnou, where some rooms come with a view of the La Sagrada Familia. Another great option is Nobu Hotel Barcelona , a glitzy blend of Japanese minimalism and comfortable luxury. ME Barcelona has an unbeatable city location plus a rooftop sundeck and pool. See our guide to the best hotels in Barcelona for more.

Loire Valley, France

Temperature in September: 22°C high; 10°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 1 hour 20 minutes Time difference: BST+1

This UNESCO-listed river valley is the epitome of bucolic bliss. Little wonder French royalty of yore ditched Paris for its gentle pastures, scattering myriad romantic châteaux across the landscape, plopped amid sprawling manicured gardens or perched on placid lakes. As the back-to-school crowds filter out, take advantage and meander its villages and vineyards in relative peace. Plus, the first weekend of September is marked by the annual Vines, Wines and Walks festival, where visitors choose between various wine trails, led by local winemakers – so you can stroll, sip and chomp the finest cheese with the help of an expert guide.

Where to stay: Château De Marçay , a 15th-century white-stone fortress perched at the top of a vineyard-covered slope.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Temperature in September: 30°C high; 21°C low Season: cool Travel time from UK: 12 hours 45 minutes Time difference: BST+2

“Exotic” barely covers it. Zanzibar is another world. Its beaches are mirage-like: salt-white sand, ocean toned electric-blue. Mythical, Unesco-listed Stone Town is an ancient maze built on trade between disparate cultures: Arab, Persian, Indian, European. The scent of cloves fills the bazaars, and gothic churches mingle with domed mosques and Persian hammams. Hotels here are smarter of late; see the waterside Park Hyatt, or Zuri Zanzibar’s thatched villas. September is dry – before the ‘short rains’ of November and December – and not so stifling at around 27°C. Note: you’ll see a lot of operators offering the chance to swim with dolphins in Zanzibar – don’t do it. Tanzania is one of only a few spots in the world with no official regulations to limit the impact of tourism on its dolphin population, and bad practices abound.

Where to stay: Zuri Zanzibar for Scandi-style furnishings and ethnic murals.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Temperature in September: 18°C high; 11°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 13 hours 45 minutes Time difference: BST-4

They call it the Paris of South America, but Buenos Aires has long tangoed to its own beat. Nothing feels quite like wandering the tree-lined streets of its largest barrio, Palermo, past rainbow-hued street art and bohemian coffee haunts, quirky galleries and fashion boutiques. It’s more seductive still in September, when the cold winter is easing off, but still-thin crowds largely comprise fun-loving locals and expats. Life-changing steaks and chic cocktail bars beckon at every corner; new – and hard-to-get-into – speakeasy Uptown BA recreates a New York Subway station. On the bright side, low-fare long-haul airline Norwegian just launched a direct flight from Gatwick, so there should be plenty of pesos in your pocket for bribing the bouncer.

Where to stay: Faena Hotel , a decadent, belle époque stay with modern elegance.

San Francisco, United States

Temperature in September: 21°C high; 13°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 11 hours Time difference: BST-8

Tourist-spotting is easy in San Francisco : just look for the people dressed for summer, teeth a-chattering. The City by the Bay is prone to chill winds and bracing fog, particularly in the summer months. September, though, is when the California dream kicks in, all clear blue skies and certified sun. Soak up those cherished rays with the tech wunderkinds in so-hot-right-now Mission district, where flamboyant sunbathers fill palm-dotted Dolores Park, and weekend brunchers order organic pop tarts in the courtyard of a converted Art Deco movie palace, Foreign Cinema . Or do as the proper locals do and head across the Golden Gate Bridge to Napa and Sonoma . The vineyards seldom look better than when soaked in autumn’s warm glow.

Where to stay: Palihotel San Francisco , a character-packed Victorian hotel near Chinatown.

French Polynesia

Temperature in September: 28°C high; 22°C low Season: winter Travel time from UK: 23 hours Time difference: BST-11

July and August are the busiest months in French Polynesia . Hold out until September and, as well as having more overwater bungalows to choose from, the weather’s still heaven. No heavy rains until November; none of the later months’ humidity to force on the air-con. Just blue, blue lagoons and the kind of peace you only find at the end of the world. Though it’s the very picture of paradise, locals call Bora Bora “boring boring”. For a quick culture dose, head out of your resort and visit the pearl farms of quiet Taha’a, or meet the blue-eyed, giant sacred river eels of lush Huahine (but maybe leave it to your guide to feed them). Try to get out of your resort and look for local tour operators offering excursions with an eco bent. Nani Travels , for example, was founded by a young Tahitian, Alexandrine Wan, and offers the likes of helping with coral-reef restoration, e-biking around Mo’orea island’s pineapple fields and monitoring shark populations.

Where to stay: The Brando , a polished hideaway on a tiny atoll with a blindingly white beach.

Utah, United States

Temperature in September: 26°C high; 10°C low Season: autumn Travel time from UK: 10 hours 30 minutes Time difference: BST-7

Utah ’s “Mighty Five” national parks live up to the moniker, but there’s such a thing as too much demand. Congestion at Arches and Zion is so bad now, officials are proposing reservations-only entry. Although those plans have been shelved for now, to really feel the magic of these landscapes you’ll need to escape the mob. September, after Labor Day weekend, is the sweet spot: the summer crush is gone, but temperatures are still moderate, so you can comfortably hike those incredible trails. This is American scenery at its largest: nothing but great rock cathedrals, blush-pink cliffs and rust-red canyons for miles. And with Under Canvas , you can camp right among them. Though the “Mighty Five” get all the press – and the visitors – Utah also has an impressive state parks system, with landscapes that vary from Mars-like stone forests (Goblin Valley) to bison-speckled beaches (Antelope Island). Visiting state parks takes pressure off the nationals and gives you a crowd-free experience, while also signalling to authorities that every inch of Utah’s wilderness is worth protecting.

Where to stay: At Under Canvas , which is 10 miles north of Moab, safari-style tents have en-suite bathrooms and luxe king-size beds, while mornings bring fresh coffee and cinnamon French toast.

A grand and romantic city, Budapest , with a complex history and beautiful architecture. September is the driest month in the city, the days still warm. The evenings may be drawing in, but as night falls its cool neighbourhood 'ruin pubs' are lit up by fairylights and full up with a young crowd drinking cocktails outdoors in these pop-up bars set up in crumbling buildings. Ideal autumn pursuits: a wallow in its thermal baths, or sweet pastries and strudel in its wonderful cafés.

It might not quite be the “new Croatia ” just yet, but that’s part of the appeal — this Balkan gem has so far managed to remain largely off-radar. There’s always some hardy adventurer ready to be first, though; in the unspoiled Albanian Alps, Brooklyn native Catherine and her Albanian partner run five-room farmhouse Hotel Rilindja , a cosy oasis amid peaks and meadows, where evenings bring feasts of spit-roasted whole goat and fresh reservoir trout. Or escape to the Albanian Riviera for glorious golden sands and clear, cobalt water lapping craggy coves. In summer, the beaches are packed with fugitives from Tirana — but come September they’re back at work, while the climate stays Mediterranean and the Adriatic keeps warm. Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe, and only small pockets of it are benefitting from tourism: namely, the Riviera, and even then, it’s mostly in the form of day trips from cruise ships. Cherry blossoms be damned. The madding crowds are less maddening in autumn, when trees brushed scarlet and gold make Kyoto ’s sublime temples and gardens an even more precise image of perfection, while sunny skies sustain Tokyo’s bright summer mood. Dive into the urban frenzy — pinging Pachinko parlours, the rhythmic slurp of ramen bars, streets lit in video screen beam and neon – then find your Zen on sacred, misty mountaintops. Try the pilgrimage trails, remote shrines and steamy onsens of the Kii Peninsula while you can still say you were there first.

Where to stay: The Mitsui, with its dramatic lobby contrasting muted bedrooms of light green and pale birch.

September is the best time for trekking in Peru – the last gasp of dry season after the summer hordes have packed up their walking poles, with clear, sunny days obliging those breath-stealing Andean views. But the Inca Trail isn’t the only hot-ticket pilgrimage around here nowadays. In 2018, chef Virgilio Martínez, of Lima’s Central (hailed the world’s second-best restaurant as of 2022), launched what might be the planet’s most ambitious eatery. Mil restaurant overlooks the lesser-seen Inca ruins of Moray, just 30 miles from trekker gateway Cusco; the menu features only ingredients found here, a dizzying 11,500ft above sea level. The foodie odyssey continues in Peru’s increasingly buzzy capital, with plenty of charming hole-in-the-walls dishing out fresh, citrus-kissed ceviche. Better still, September water temps are best for sampling Lima ’s surf scene. Straying off the beaten track will bring more sols to the people who need them most, and one place that’s especially true is Chaparri Ecological Reserve. On Peru’s northern coast, the reserve – home to rare species including the spectacled bear and the puma – is owned and managed by the local community. However, land speculators have, in recent times, aggressively attempted encroachment on this protected territory. Visiting is the best way to give locals much-needed resources to help them keep up their good work.

Where to stay: Arennas Mancora for manicured lawns, palm trees and a whole lot of service.

The original ultimate safari heavyweight is back in the game and is becoming the safari destination to watch. There are some fantastic new lodges opening up in Zimbabwe's exceptional and little-visited national parks, and beside the Victoria Falls. September is one of the best months to go to Zimbabwe for game-viewing, when wildlife congregates around the diminishing watering holes as the temperatures begin to rise and rain is rare, and large elephant herds can be seen in Hwange National Park. It may be high season, but the parks here never get crowded.

Where to stay: Mpala Jena – a tented safari camp on the banks of the upper Zambezi River, close to Victoria Falls – is the perfect spot to discover everything this part of Zimbabwe has to offer: the river, the falls and the wildlife.

Town of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast Italy

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Temperature in September: 26°C high; 20°C low Season: summer Travel time from UK: 2 hours 40 minutes Time difference: BST+1

Italy's glittering Amalfi Coast is a summer big-hitter for a reason. But we recommend skipping this slice of the country during high summer, and visiting in shoulder season instead – the days are still long and sunshiny, and the coastline's lovely towns and handsome hotels will be far quieter. Amalfi's best beaches will be less crowded, too; don't miss Marina Piccolais, one of the most beautiful of the lot. Spend days visiting the prettiest Amalfi Coast towns – we like seaside towns Minori and Maiori, just a mile apart from one another – or eat at some of the best restaurants not just on the Amalfi Coast , but in the whole of Italy.

Where to stay: 17th-century former monastery Monastero Santa Rosa is a glamorous hotel hovering above the shoreline. Belmond Caruso Ravello , meanwhile, dates back even further, set in an 11th-century ivy-clad building. See our guide to the best hotels on the Amalfi Coast for more ideas.

It's the question we all want to know the answer to: when is the best time to visit Bali? Rainy season is from October to March, while the dry season runs from April to September. Aiming for the outer edges of the dry season is your best bet – making September the perfect time to visit. Get under the skin of secret Bali at slow-pace villages, or visit some of the best beaches in Bali for a last gasp of sunshine before British winter kicks in closer to home.

Where to stay: The best Bali hotels include Bill Bensley's Capella Ubud , a luxe tented camp, and Lost Lindenberg , a whipsmart fresh arrival.

Will there be a Martian sighting again soon in Bronx?

Joe Trezza

WASHINGTON -- Ever since Jasson Domínguez returned to game action in mid-May, the Yankees have left their No. 1 prospect to play and develop in the Minors rather than sit in the Majors.

As general manager Brian Cashman has explained, the organization did not see a path to provide Domínguez with everyday at-bats, considering they had Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo starting in the three outfield spots and Giancarlo Stanton seeing reps as the everyday designated hitter.

That’s still the case, but with only a month of the Minor League season left and big league rosters set to expand on Sept. 1, the calculus on Domínguez might be evolving. The Martian may be landing again soon.

The Yankees briefly brought Domínguez back to the Majors as their 27th man for the Little League Classic on Aug. 18. Rosters will expand to 28 players beginning on Sept. 1 (this upcoming Sunday), and it’s expected Domínguez will rejoin the Yankees by then. As manager Aaron Boone said recently of Domínguez: “He’s always an option.”

tour amical september

Is there a path to everyday at-bats now for Domínguez? Well, no. But even in a reserve role, having Domínguez should be a helpful boost for the Yankees for the stretch run. He’s been swinging the bat well lately, too, recording multihit games in five of his last eight contests at Triple-A.

The opportunities Domínguez does get are likely to come at the expense of Verdugo, a left-handed hitter who has struggled more against lefties (.608 OPS) than righties in what has been a down season overall. Left-handed pitching has been an Achilles heel for the Yankees all season. The switch-hitting Domínguez would give them another right-handed option against lefties, as New York’s current fifth outfielder, Trent Grisham, is also left-handed.

Verdugo hit only .178 with a .500 OPS from June 15 to Aug. 23, and he went 0-for-21 over the final six games of that stretch. But he’s picked things up as of late, going 8-for-19 with a homer and four runs over his past five games.

“I’m definitely feeling better,” Verdugo said this week. “Definitely putting better swings on and staying within myself a little bit more. It’s just, keep it going and try not to get too ahead of myself and look for damage or anything like that. Just keep taking what the pitchers are giving me.”

Said Boone: “He can be such an impact player for us. I don’t care who you are -- rookie, veteran -- you go through it, and you go through some struggles. You go through a tough stretch, it wears [on you]. The grind is real. So a couple months there where he’s grinded through it, to get some traction -- especially all the work you put into it, pour in, behind the scenes, trying to unlock yourself and get it rolling to get some results -- it’s good for the soul.”

Located in Sonoma County about 70 miles north of San Francisco, Healdsburg is home to hotels, spas, restaurants, tasting rooms, and a charming walkable downtown. In September, temperatures in the 70s make strolling through town, browsing art galleries, boutiques, and farmers markets a pleasant way to spend the day. It’s grape picking season, a great time to visit local wineries for tours and a glimpse of the harvest activity. Ferrari-Carano and Jordan — among many other wineries — offer tastings and food pairings, and seeing the beautiful properties is part of the enjoyment. I’ve visited these wineries, and it’s always fun and educational to chat with winemakers or tasting room staff and then take home a bottle or two. However, you don’t have to be an oenophile to enjoy wine country; the scenery and atmosphere are captivating no matter what you’re sipping.

I went to Scotland with close friends a few Septembers ago, and it was an all-time favorite trip. We played golf at St. Andrews and Gleneagles, stayed at a historic inn, once one of Scotland’s many castles, and drove through the gorgeous Highlands. We spent a few days in Edinburgh where we enjoyed a walking tour, one of many great things to do in Scotland . We loved our road trip, but another way to see the country is with Vacations By Rail , celebrating 20 years with 20 Must-experience Tours, including Edinburgh, the Highlands & Islands . Scotland’s rich literary tradition is celebrated at the Fife Arms in Braemar with the third annual Literary Festival from Sept. 20-22.

Where to Stay: The Fife Arms features a museum-worthy art collection in a 19th-century building. The Glasshouse Hotel in Edinburgh was converted from the 160-year-old Lady Glenorchy Church in 2003. In September, Romans are returning from their August holidays, temperatures are cooling into the 70s, and summer’s tourists are starting to head home. Even if you’ve visited The Eternal City several times, there’s always something new to see — or a favorite place to return to. Those favorites might include one of Rome’s outdoor markets, the Trevi Fountain , or the Spanish Steps, a popular gathering place — just don’t plan to sit and relax there ( that is no longer permitted ). First-time visitors who want to see the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, or St. Peter’s Basilica should plan their itinerary and get front-of-the-line tickets to avoid long waits. After exploring the popular spots, it’s time to walk the cobblestone streets, do some people watching, sip an Aperol spritz in a busy piazza, or find the perfect gelato.

Where to Stay: Hotel de Russie is a T+L reader favorite. The Romeo Roma is set in a 16th-century palace, and Rome Cavalieri is on the city’s highest hilltop. Hotel Eden is a personal favorite, and I love the rooftop Il Giardino Ristorante.

Just as beautiful as you imagine, Bali is surrounded by beaches and covered in hillsides with terraced rice paddies. September ends the dry season as October brings more rain, but as in many places, there’s beauty to be found on rainy days, too. Many visitors head for Bali’s beaches , and others are fascinated by the temples and the culture. During my last trip to Bali, we visited beaches, temples, and markets with handmade crafts in Ubud; I had to keep reminding myself of the limited space in my carry-on bag.

Where to Stay: Umana Bali LXR Hotels & Resorts offers one, two, and three-bedroom villas. Four Seasons Resorts Bali at Sayan is located in the central highlands along the Ayung River. Hoshinoya Bali is in the serene Bali jungle, and Viceroy Bali is set in a secluded ridge above Bali’s Valley of the Kings.

The country’s capital and the place to see the Panama Canal, Panama City is a modern city with a historic center, Casco Viejo. Cobblestone streets, plazas, restaurants, churches, and historical buildings make up the UNESCO World Heritage site. At the Miraflores Visitor Center , visitors can watch ships pass through the canal from an observation deck, and an IMAX film tells about the history and operation of the canal. Amador Causeway , built from materials extracted during the digging of the canal, is a recreation area of restaurants, shops, clubs, and the Biomuseo. When you visit Panama , be sure to taste Geisha coffee, said to be some of the best in the world, as T+L writer Stacey Leasca learned during her visit .

Where to Stay: Hotel La Compañía is a restored heritage hotel, formerly a 17th-century Jesuit convent. The Santa Maria, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Golf Resort features a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course.  The Buenaventura Golf & Beach Resort Panama, Autograph Collection is set on Panama’s shoreline.

September is considered shoulder season in Iceland, after the popular summer and before the cold winter months. Daytime temperatures in the 50s and cooler nights will make jumping into Iceland’s hot springs especially appealing. From Sept. 26-Oct. 6, the Reykjavík International Film Festival brings a variety of motion pictures and events to the city. Many travelers head to Iceland hoping to see the northern lights. “Most people think the dark winter months are when you have the best odds of catching a glimpse of the northern lights, but September is actually the best month to view them, and 2024 is predicted to have the best aurora visibility in decades,” according to Lauren Bates, founder and CEO of Wild Terrains . Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast looking to hike a glacier or a wellness devotee content to soak in a hot spring, Iceland will satisfy.

Where to Stay: Hotel Rangá , in the secluded countryside of the south coast, features an on-site observatory and geothermal hot tubs. Wild Terrains offers two group trips in September, and CEO Bates comments, “The summer crowds have dissipated, but locals are still enjoying the warm-ish weather at multiple outdoor festivals like Reykjavik Jazz Fest .”
