The Cruise Line That Never Did Waterslides Just Unveiled the Longest One Ever at Sea

Gene Sloan

The world's biggest cruise line, Royal Caribbean, was a notable latecomer when it comes to the trend of cruise lines adding giant waterslides atop their ships. As recently as early 2016, it didn't have a single one on any of its vessels, even as rivals Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises were touting waterslides galore across their fleets.

But over the past three years, the Miami-based company has been making up for lost time. Since adding its first waterslides to the Galveston, Texas-based Liberty of the Seas in February 2016, Royal Caribbean has rapidly rolled out 17 of the most spectacular waterslides at sea across seven of its vessels, including — just a few weeks ago — the longest one ever built on a cruise ship.

Last weekend, I got a peek at this new record-setting attraction, which is on the line's just-revamped Navigator of the Seas. It's called The Blaster and, as I admitted in a sneak peek of the vessel's $115 million makeover , it is, indeed, a blast. But not for the reason you might think.

The Blaster and Rip Tide slides on Navigator of the Seas Royal Amplified. Photo courtesy of Royal Caribbean International.

Despite its unusually long length (it stretches more than 800 feet) The Blaster isn't a scream-inducing thrill ride. It didn't strike fear into me like the new Daredevil's Peak waterslide at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay, which plunges from a height of 135 feet and is the biggest waterslide drop in North America. (I'm still getting over that one, which I tried for the first time on this very same trip.)

What The Blaster does do, however, is give you an opportunity for quality fun time with one of your kids, your spouse, a friend or, heck, maybe even a stranger. That's because The Blaster is a two-person tube ride, and it was specifically designed to be a family attraction that gets you and your loved ones together. Very, very close together.

"It's meant to be fun for everybody," Royal Caribbean's vice president for product development, Laura Hodges Bethge, told me during an interview about the ship. The allure, she said, is that, "You get to do it together."

The Blaster isn't just a waterslide but what's known as an aqua coaster. It features water jets that propel you up and down as you careen around the back of the ship and even beyond its sides, out over open water.

Hodges Bethge, who was responsible for the overhaul of Navigator, said she sent three teams of her employees with their kids to waterparks around the country to see what sort of waterslides they thought were the most fun for families. All three came back saying it was the multiperson aqua coasters.

A multideck tower serves as the entryway to the new water slides on Navigator of the Seas. Photo by Gene Sloan / The Points Guy.

"When the teams came back, they said doing a slide by yourself is really fun, but doing it with somebody else just makes the experience much better," Hodges Bethge said. "We said, [if] that's the best experience, then we have to create it."

It wasn't easy. Hodges Bethge called it a "very big challenge" to build an aqua coaster on the back of Navigator. It's something almost no other line has tried before. Only Disney Cruise Line has done something similar (but smaller) on two of its ships.

The Best Credit Cards for Booking Cruises

Personally, I was amazed at the intricacy of the design of the ride, which weaves its way like a crafty serpent around and above the ship's existing basketball court, rock climbing wall and FlowRider surf simulator. It also twirls around a second new waterslide in the same back-of-the-ship area. Called Riptide, this second attraction also is unusual in that it's the first headfirst mat racer waterslide at sea. That is to say, it's basically an elaborate device that washes your face. I admit that I had a grand time watching people get blasted with water as they splashed down at the end.

"We wanted to make sure we had a little bit more thrill for those who wanted it," Hodges Bethge said of Riptide's headfirst format.

Why so much effort to "go big" with waterslides atop Navigator? It turns out that, after years of shunning waterslides, Royal Caribbean has found they are guest-satisfaction nirvana.

"When we look at one of the highest guest satisfiers on our ships, it's our waterslides," Hodges Bethge said. "Families and kids of all ages love them."

The 7 Biggest Water Slides on a Cruise Ship!

Photo of author

July 8, 2024

biggest water slides on a cruise ship

Water slides are fun but they’re even more fun on a cruise ship .

In this article, I’ve ranked the biggest slides on cruise ships based on their height and length .

It was a challenging task, considering both dimensions to determine which truly stands out . Can you guess the winner?

Table of Contents

7. Supercell on Royal Caribbean

Supercell on Harmony of the Seas

You can find this slide on : Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas.

The Supercell slide on Royal Caribbean is part of the Perfect Storm trio of water slides, which also includes the Cyclone and Typhoon slides (that we will find later in the ranking).

The Supercell is loved for its “champagne bowl” design. Basically, the riders slide into a large bowl, circling several times before exiting into the Beach Pool.

On some ships, it is higher than on others. For example, on Harmony of the Seas, it is suspended five decks above the ship’s Central Park . You can see it on the right in the photo above.

To enjoy the Supercell slide, guests must meet a minimum height requirement of 48 inches or 1.22 meters.

Like all water slides on Royal Caribbean ships, the Supercell is complimentary, with no additional cost .

6. Tidal Wave on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas

Tidal Wave cruise ship water slide

You can find this slide on : Liberty of the Seas.

The Tidal Wave slide on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas is the first of its kind at sea .

I don’t know if you can understand how it works from the pic but it is a big boomerang-style slide .

There is a steep drop at the beginning that propels you up a nearly vertical wall for a moment of weightlessness before free-falling back down .

I’ve tried it myself and I can say it’s super fun and I love it!

It’s an exclusive on Liberty of the Seas and you can find it on deck 13.

5. Typhoon and Cyclone on multiple ships

Typhoon and Cyclone water slides on cruise ship

You can find this slide on : Adventure of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas.

Typhoon and Cyclone are two of the most famous water slides by Royal Caribbean. You can find them on a wide variety of ships and I’m sure many of you have already tried them.

They are twisting, racer-style slides . You can race with a friend to see who reaches the bottom first. This adds an element of fun competition to the slide experience.

These slides are also suspended five decks above the ship’s Central Park and are just a little bit smaller than Supercell.

Generally, the requirement to enjoy them is a minimum height of 48 inches or 1.22 meters, but height restrictions can vary by ship .

4. Ocean Loops on Norwegian Joy, Bliss, and Encore

Ocean Loops waterslide on Norwegian cruise

You can find this slide on : NCL Joy, NCL Bliss, NCL Encore.

The Ocean Loops is a water slide that you can find on three ships by Norwegian Cruise Line: Joy, Bliss, and Encore.

It is a closed-tube slide featuring two loops that extend out over the ship’s side, providing riders with breathtaking views of the ocean from a height of 159 feet above sea level .

The slide starts with a steep hatch drop, where a panel opens underneath the rider’s feet.

A fun fact about this water slide is that there have been instances where riders didn’t gain enough momentum to complete the loop and got temporarily stuck in it.

Thankfully, there is an emergency exit door and these situations are handled quickly by the ship’s crew .

Since it is a slide with a rather particular curvature it has specific weight requirements. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall and weigh between 130 pounds to 300 pounds.

I’ve never tried it but it looks so fun and it’s definitely on the list of the next ones I want to try .

3. AquaDuck on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy

AquaDuck waterslide on Disney cruise

You can find this slide on : Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

The AquaDuck is an innovative waterslide found on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy .

It’s renowned for being the f irst water coaster at sea , offering guests a thrilling ride that combines the excitement of a roller coaster with the fun of a waterslide.

Riders aboard a two-person raft are propelled through 765 feet of clear tubing , extending over the edge of the ship and through the forward funnel, providing stunning views of the ocean and ship below.

This slide is both high and very long. I recommend you try it!

2. Free Fall on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway, Getaway, and Escape

Free Fall waterslide on Norwegian Cruise

You can find this slide on : NCL Breakaway, NCL Getaway, NCL Escape.

The Free Fall water slide is known as the fastest water slide at sea , and the name says it all!

Riders start by standing on a trap door that opens beneath them. It’s a fast descent followed by a loop extending out over one side of the ship.

It’s considered a water slide for thrill-seekers and for the passengers who love adrenaline. Don’t miss it if you travel with Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway, Getaway, or Escape.

1. The Blaster on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas

The Blaster waterslide on Royal Caribbean

You can find this slide on : Navigator of the Seas.

The Blaster on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas is the biggest water slide on a cruise ship.

Like the one on Disney, also the Blaster is an aqua coaster that propels riders through over 800 feet of hills, drops, and straightaways .

Some parts of it extend over the side of the ship and offer a unique view and experience.

As part of a massive $115 million dollar renovation,  Royal Caribbean  recently revamped their 14-story monster of a cruise ship, Navigator of the Seas, and added an appropriately over-the-top attraction: The world’s longest waterslide at sea.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxay8bUhygL

At more than 800 feet long, the floating waterslide is called “The Blaster” and winds around the back of the ship, across the deck, and even hangs off the side of the ship for a stretch of the ride giving sliders epic views of the open waters.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxH97XzjNkH

The ride isn’t just a waterslide, though – it’s what’s considered an “aqua coaster” thanks to water jets that propel the rider up and down hills that twirl around the ship’s second slide,  basketball court, rock climbing wall, surf simulator, and out beyond the sides of the ship.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwhZfhZlAOl

Aside from having the longest waterslide at sea, Navigator of the Seas also added the first headfirst mat racer waterslide at sea called Riptide, which is a lot faster than its lengthy counterpart.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuwNaE3Hztl

The slide has translucent tubes that make you feel like you’re about to get whipped overboard at the end for a heart-pounding grand finale.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvesWwEgWo5

Navigator of the Seas completed its expensive facelift and sailed its maiden journey a few months back ago in early March.

So if shooting down a ginormous waterslide happens to be on your cruise ship to-do list, it might be worth booking a cabin on the ship’s next voyage.

Get ready to experience the rush of adrenaline as we discover the longest, fastest, most unique, and gentle water slides on the high seas. From the top cruise lines to the latest and greatest slides, we’ll cover everything you need to know to slide into fun.

And don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with all the restrictions and requirements you should be aware of before taking the plunge.

So, pack your bags and let’s embark on a journey of freedom, excitement, and unforgettable memories. Are you ready to slide into fun? Let’s go!

  • Water slides are a popular attraction on cruises for both children and adults, and cruise ship water slides in 2022 are bigger, faster, and wetter than ever before.
  • Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line have some of the best water slides, with Navigator of the Seas having the longest water slide on a cruise ship, The Blaster, which is 800 feet long with twists, turns, and an uphill section.
  • Free Fall is the fastest water slide on a cruise ship and can be found on three Norwegian Cruise Line ships, shaped like a loop and riders experience a g-force of 4 gs.
  • Disney Cruise Line has different water slides on each of its ships, with Aqua Duck being a gentler water slide that is 765 feet long and illuminated at night.

Top Cruise Lines

I’ve learned that Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line have some of the best water slides, but I’m curious to know which other cruise lines are worth considering.

After doing some research, I found that Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises also have water slide designs that are popular among passengers.

Carnival Cruise Line has the largest water park at sea, with two slides that are 455 feet long and a 300-gallon dumping bucket. The line also has a 212-foot-long Twister water slide that has a corkscrew shape and a 300-gallon dump bucket.

MSC Cruises has a three-slide water park that includes a 394-foot-long water slide with a 30-foot drop, a 308-foot-long slide with a 40-foot drop, and a 98-foot-long slide with a 13-foot drop. The line also has a 394-foot-long water slide that has twists and turns, as well as a 475-foot-long slide that has a steep drop.

Notable Water Slides

On top of the Blaster and Riptide on Navigator of the Seas, some of the most thrilling water slides can be found on Norwegian Cruise Line ships. The Free Fall is one of the fastest water slides on any cruise ship, with riders experiencing a g-force of 4 gs as they plunge down the slide. This heart-pumping ride is shaped like a loop and is available on three of Norwegian’s ships.

But for those who prefer a longer slide, the Aqua Duck on Disney Cruise Line’s ships is a gentler option that still provides plenty of fun. This 765-foot-long slide is illuminated at night, adding an extra touch of magic to the experience.

As cruise ships continue to evolve, water slides have gone from kiddie pools to thrilling attractions that are enjoyed by both children and adults. Whether you’re looking for a fast and furious ride or a more leisurely slide, there’s something for everyone on the seas.

Restrictions and Requirements

Restrictions such as height and weight requirements are important to keep in mind when considering which cruise ship water slide to experience. Safety guidelines and rules for water slides on cruise ships vary from one ship to another, and it’s essential to check with the cruise line before booking your trip.

Some slides have minimum height requirements, while others have maximum weight restrictions. Despite these restrictions, there are still plenty of family-friendly amenities and activities on cruise ships beyond water slides.

From onboard theaters and live shows to mini-golf courses and rock climbing walls, cruise ships offer something for everyone. So, while water slides are undoubtedly a popular attraction, it’s worth exploring all that a cruise ship has to offer.

Are there any water slides on smaller cruise ships or are they only on larger ones?

Smaller cruise ships may have fewer water slides, but they offer benefits like a more intimate atmosphere and fewer crowds. Comparing water slide experiences on large vs small ships depends on personal preference, but both can be fun.

Is there an additional cost to use the water slides on a cruise ship?

Water slide fees are not typically included in the cost of a cruise and can range from $5-$25 per ride. Access restrictions, such as height and weight requirements, also apply. But the exhilarating experience is worth it!

Are there any age restrictions for using the water slides?

Yes, there are age restrictions and height requirements for using cruise ship water slides. These vary by slide and cruise line, so it’s important to check before heading to the top deck for some fun in the sun.

Can riders bring their own inflatable rings or tubes to use on the water slides?

I’m sorry, as an AI language model, I cannot browse the internet and find out an accurate answer to your question. However, as a general rule, bringing inflatables may be prohibited on cruise ship water slides for safety reasons. It’s important to follow water slide etiquette and the do’s and don’ts to ensure a fun and safe experience.

Are there any safety precautions in place for using the water slides on a cruise ship?

Water slide safety measures and cruise ship water slide regulations are strictly enforced to ensure the safety of all riders. Height, weight, and age restrictions apply, and lifeguards are present at all times to monitor activity.

10 Top Cruise Ships With Water Slides

Waterslides on cruise vessels have become an intrinsic part of a holiday at sea, offering exciting and memorable experiences to passengers of all ages. In the past few years, cruise lines have added many attractions to their ships, making them giant sailing cities with shopping areas, game zones, golf and race courses, operas, theatres, full-fledged water parks, and much more.

Water Parks on cruise ships provide a break from conventional activities by adding adventure and thrill to the cruising experience.

The colourful spiral slides that meander around the cruise ship’s deck in several shapes and sizes also give stunning ocean views through their translucent sections. Some slides have unique features, making them true engineering marvels.

However, when did the first slide on a cruise ship come up?

In the 1970s, when the cruise ship industry was still in its infancy, these vessels had a swimming pool, which was still considered a big thing at that time, given that cruise ships were relatively smaller.

However, by the 1980s, Carnival decided to add a single water slide to its 35,000 gross tonne Festivale, capable of accommodating at least 728 guests. This is often said to be the first water slide ever added to a cruise ship. This water slide was like the one found on backyard pools, but it made Carnival an early leader in incorporating water slides in cruise ships.

In 1990, Carnival Fantasy debuted and became the first cruise ship with a proper slide measuring 115 ft. Six years later, in 1996, Carnival made headlines when it unveiled a 214-foot long corkscrew waterslide on the Destiny, now called the Carnival Sunshine, which was at that time, the biggest cruise ship in the world

Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean began adding waterslides on their ships in the past decade. Many new ships of these lines now have massive waterparks. Disney Cruise Line does have water parks however they are not as crazy since Disney focusses on a family experience, hence has many attractions for kids.

This article will take you through 10 top cruise ships with water slides. So make sure you add these cruise ships to your list to enjoy watery adventures on your next cruise vacation.

1. Perfect Storm Waterslide on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas

Wonder of the Seas has more than one giant slide. Instead, it has a whole complex with 2 four-deck high slides, named Typhoon and Cyclone, part of the Perfect Storm. These two boldest waterslides at sea, placed side by side, allow one to have a water-slide race with your partner, friend or family member.

Perfect Storm Waterslide on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas

The slides have some translucent sections offering beautiful sea views, too. The Perfect Storm is on three of the cruise line’s Oasis Class Ships apart from the Wonder of the Seas. It is found on Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas.

It is important to note that the Royal Carribean’s Navigator of the Seas also has a waterslide complex called the Perfect Storm, but it is entirely different from the one on Wonder of the Seas.

2. The Blaster On Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas

The Perfect Storm complex on Navigator of the Seas is different from the ones found on other ships of the cruise line.

It features the Blaster, the longest aqua coaster ever built on a cruise ship. At 800 ft, this feels like an endless stretch of the yellow-orange tube that curls around the back deck of the cruise ship.

The Blaster On Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas

It is one of the most famous attractions of the Navigator of the Seas. Blaster has a hydraulic system with 5 water jets propelling you and your partner up, down and forward on the ship. Sometimes, one flies over the ship’s side into the open water onboard.

Apart from the Blaster, there is also a headfirst mat racer slide, the Riptide, one of its kind ever built on a cruise ship.

Navigator of the Seas was upgraded in 2019 with €115 million. It was then that water slides, laser tags and an escape room were added to keep it up-to-date and desirable for passengers who love water slides.

3. WaterWorks On Carnival’s Mardi Gras

There is at least one waterslide on each cruise ship of Carnival, something other cruise lines cannot boast about. All Carnival cruises have a water park area, the WaterWorks. However, it differs in size and features from vessel to vessel.

This water park area onboard Mardi Gras comprises 3 massive spiralling water slides, a big dumping bucket that soaks everyone with a splash, twin racing slides and several interactive water features.

WaterWorks On Carnival’s Mardi Gras

Blue Lightning is known for its high-speed turns and twists; meanwhile, Orange Thunder propels you into the water. The Twister slide is another famous slide among water enthusiasts.

The biggest water park areas or complexes onboard Carnival Cruise Ships are found on the newest additions, such as the Celebration, Carnival Venezia and the Mardi Gras. These ships have 3 waterslides, 1 more than most cruise ships of the line.

4. Aqua Park on Norwegian Encore

The largest ship in the fleet of Norwegian Cruise Line is the Norwegian Encore, 1094 ft long with a Gross Register Tonnage of 169,116.

This behemoth has 2 multistory water slides, the Aqua Racer, racing slides and the Ocean Loops Slide that stretches out to the ship’s side.

Aqua Park on Norwegian Encore

The Aqua Park has small water slides for kids too, along with a splash area with buckets that drench those who stand below them. One can also enjoy a water fight using the water cannons available at the park.

Norwegian Cruise Line added massive waterslides on its ships in 2010 with Norwegian Epic. It has 3 monster waterslides and an Epic Plunge, a 200-foot-long ride ending in a swirling bowl.

Epic Plunge is a part of Norwegian Epic’s Aqua Park, which was the first water park on a Norwegian cruise ship. Since then, the line has added Aqua Parks to 6 more new ships, including the biggest ship, Norwegian Encore.

Another ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, has twin free-fall water slides that drop you down many stories, 2 twisting racer slides, and a family slide with a modest drop.

5. AquaMouse on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish

The newest ship of the Disney Cruise line is Disney Wish, which has a water coaster called the AquaMouse.

It is different from other ships of the line as riders can see animated shorts of Disney movies and Mickey Mouse clips as they ride up the ramp at the start of the ride.

AquaMouse on Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish

Riders experience show scenes, lighting, and special sound effects while having a fun-filled ride around and off the ship through the 760-foot twisting tubes.

The Disney Wish also has 10 pools apart from a Toy Story Splash Zone, with huge rubber toys and the Slide-a-saurus Rex family slide.

The family-focused Disney Cruise Line has one of the coolest water slides and attractions. Their ships have a water coaster called AquaDuck, similar to the Blaster on Royal Caribbean Ships.

The water ride is relatively gentle by the standards of water parks since it is designed for kids and their parents who can ride along.

Although the AquaDuck is shorter than the Balster at 765 ft, it is nothing less, given its location surrounding the main pool area on the Disney ships.

Apart from the AquaDuck, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have small, kids-friendly waterslides close to the Mickey pool, called Mickey’s Slide.

These two ships also have a water play zone for toddlers called the Nemo’s Reef. Disney Fantasy also has a water zone with geysers, water jets and bubblers called AquaLab.

6. Aqua Park On the MSC Europa

MSC Cruises’ ships also boast water slides, and all the cruise ships unveiled by the cruise line after 2017 have a water park area, usually on the top deck, where all the watery fun begins.

MSC Europa’s Aqua Park has four criss-cross water slides above the deck, along with the use of virtual technology that makes the ride interesting and an interactive experience. There is also a dedicated pool for toddlers.

Aqua Park On the MSC Europa

MSC Seaside’s Aqua Park has 4 slides and a children’s play area. However, these waterslides are massive, two being 25-foot-long slides that stretch over the ship’s sides.

MSC Meraviglia has a winter-themed Polar Aqua Park and an Aquaplay area for the kids. About 14 of MSC Cruises’ 22 Ships have at least one waterslide on their top decks.

7. Twister Waterslide on Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista is said to be one of the most fun ships to be on, with many exciting things to do, attractions to visit and nightlife that doesn’t seem to end.

The highlight of Carnival Vista’s WaterWorks has to be the Twister Waterslide, which is the equivalent of hundreds of feet of spirals that start high and get you down with one of the fastest and wettest water rides ever designed on a cruise ship.

Twister Waterslide on Carnival Vista

Gallons of water rush through the slide so one is not dry, and by the time one reaches the end of the twists and turns, there is another big splash awaiting you. The ride is open to all; however, height and weight restrictions are applicable.

Then comes the DrainPipe, which ends with a major swirl while the PowerDrencher soaks you completely from above.

8. Supercell on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas welcomes over 4,000 guests on its 16 decks packed with full-on entertainment, delicious dining options and so on. The ship has 7 differently themed neighbourhoods, like the revolutionary Boardwalk and Central Park space.

Harmony of the Seas sails in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, making it perfect for family holidays, couple trips and even a solo adventure.

Supercell on Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas

This action-packed cruise ship is particularly famous for its impressive waterslides. Young guests can enjoy Splashaway Bay, while adults can check out some really exhilarating waterslides.

The twin slides, Typhoon and Cyclone, are fun to race on with your partner. They have stretches of a see-through tunnel, making it even more fun. Another slide is called the Supercell, which has several loops, turns and twists. This ride is surely not for the faint of heart.

9. Dr Seuss WaterWorks On Carnival Horizon

Carnival Horizon is the 26th ship of the Carnival Fleet and the 2nd cruise ship of the line’s Vista Class. She has a 133,596 gross tonnage that can accommodate almost 4000 passengers and 1450 crew members.

This bold and beautiful ship is loaded with fun activities, perfect for families since it has a lot of kids clubs and dining places with reduced prices for children under 12.

Dr Seuss WaterWorks On Carnival Horizon

The cruise does not disappoint adults since it has the 2-screen Carnival Multiplex that combines one theatre with IMAX action and the other with stunning 3D visuals.

Not to forget that the ship has a Dr Seuss WaterWorks, for all those who love the waterpark fun. There is the Twister Waterslide, racing slides, the DrainPipe and the ultimate PowerDrencher.

The ship also has a SkyRide, the Punchliner Comedy Club and Playlist Productions, two of the top onboard entertainment options.

10. AquaDunk On Disney Magic

Disney Magic, like all other Disney cruise ships is known for its fun disney rides. It has the Twist ‘n’ Spout and the Aquadunk. The former is a relaxing, and a children-friendly waterslide, the latter is a thrilling ride extending over the ship’s side.

The AquaDunk begins with a steep drop before it goes into a clear tube shooting out of the ship. This ride was added to the Disney Magic when it was being renovated in 2013, making it the only ship with an AquaDunk.

While one climbs the stairs to the top, there are storyboards about how the AquaDunk came into being. It was Donald’s nephews Louie, Dewey and Huey who created its design.

Then Donald tested many prototypes before finally selecting the current design the guests experience on the Disney Dream.

The AquaDunk is positioned on Deck 13 and after you climb to the top, you enter a clear capsule where you stand with arms crossed and count to the point when the bottom platform opens, dropping you into the slide. The ride is 212 feet or 3 stories.

It is a single rider waterslide with no tube or float to ride in. Guests must be 48 inches to experience this slide.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

We’re counting down the Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides that’ll have you slip-sliding your way to the wettest, wild fun at sea.

As more cruise ships are raising the bar on exciting things to do onboard, we’ve seen an explosion of new water parks and slides from just about every major family-focused cruise line. Not only have we seen these watery wonderlands coming onboard new ships, but many dry dock refurbishments include major redesigns to include some incredible new attractions.

Highlighting the best of the best, we present our list of the Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides.

(10) Vertigo

MSC Cruises has been adding bigger and better water parks to each of their ships in recent years. At 394 feet, Vertigo onboard MSC Preziosa is one of the longest water slides at sea. Snaking around the ship’s funnel, this slide features great lighting effects, a 30 foot clear section over the side of the ship and 42 feet of drop from start to finish.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(9) Speedway Splash

Onboard Carnival Sunshine, you’ll enjoy one of the biggest Carnival WaterWorks in the fleet. Carnival guests are used to fun water slides, but when Carnival Destiny was transformed into Carnival Sunshine in 2013, the cruise line went big on the splashing thrills and chills. Along with the signature twister waterslide, Speedway Splash puts riders head-to-head in a timed race. The dual 235-foot long slides feature quick turns, lighting effects and even checkered flag sections to amp up the competitive fun of challenging friends and family to splashing speed superiority.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(8) Supercell

Royal Caribbean has been pulling out the stops to introduce some of the most exciting and unique water slides at sea. While Supercell is not the first champagne bowl slide on a cruise ship, it certainly takes the experience up a few notches. It starts with a long walk up to the loading platform where you’ll get an incredible view over the ship. From the moment you enter the transparent tube, you’ll get the sensation of height as you’re briefly suspended 10 decks above Central Park. Available on Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and recently amped-up Oasis of the Seas, Supercell is fast with quick turns, before you get shot out into the bowl, plunge down the drain and into the landing pad.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(7) AquaDuck

As the first of its kind at sea when introduced and found onboard Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, AquaDuck is part water coaster, part lazy river, taking guests on a thrilling wet and wild ride. Starting from within the ship’s aft funnel, riders make their way over the side of the ship on a two-person raft, then get propelled through two water jet incline sections, before shooting down the clear tube through the forward funnel and back around the other side of the ship all while enjoying incredible views.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(6) Green Thunder

The menacing drop slide Green Thunder, found onboard Carnival Spirit, Pride, Legend & Miracle takes the thrill factor way up as it plummets you way down. The 187-foot-long slide pulls the floor from under its riders and drops them 34 feet while reaching speeds of up to 25 mph. Blasting through the inside of the green translucent tube, it ends with splashing jolt. The ride on Green Thunder is quick, but the sensation will linger.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(5) Riptide

Face the awesome thrills head-on with Riptide , cruising’s only headfirst mat racer, added to Navigator of the Seas during her massive 2019 amplification. While riding belly-down on a thin mat, Riptide puts riders closer to the water, so close in fact, that they’ll feel the lightly stinging water spray on their face all the way down to an exhilarating finish through a translucent tube.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(4) AquaDunk

Exclusive to Disney Magic, the AquaDunk plunges guests on a fast and wild ride. The countdown to fun begins in 3, 2, 1 before the floor drops sending riders over the edge of the ship and through 212 feet of twisting slippery slide, finishing with a super soaking splashdown.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(3) Tidal Wave

The one and only boomerang slide at sea, Tidal Wave, found onboard Liberty of the Seas, is perfect for adventure seekers. Tidal Wave features a steep drop that sends riders up a near vertical wall for a moment of weightlessness then backwards into free fall and splashdown.

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(2) Ocean Loops

Norwegian Cruise Line has improved upon the already exciting drop slide, with Ocean Loops. Found onboard Norwegian Joy, Bliss and Encore, Ocean Loops starts with the nerve-racking uncertainly of when will you drop, then you hit the mind-shaking double loops while flying over the side of the ship through the clear tube sections high above the oceans’ surface. Is that vertigo setting in?

Top 10 Cruise Ship Water Slides

(1) The Blaster

Combining the wet with the wild, Navigator of the Seas main attraction water slide, The Blaster, is the first aqua coaster onboard Royal Caribbean and the longest slide at sea.. Grab your two-person raft and ride the more than 800 feet of water blasting inclines, heart-pounding drops and tight turns while you crisscross in and around the sports deck below.

Royal Caribbean The Blaster

The world's longest waterslide at sea arrives this year – and it looks amazing

Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas is set to become a thrill-seeker's playground...

Now, the cruise line has revealed plans to install the world’s longest waterslide at sea on its Navigator of the Seas ship – and it looks amazing.

Built with young and adult thrill-seekers in mind, the Blaster will propel a two-person raft through more than 800 feet of hills, drops and straightaways, including a section that extends over the side of the ship.

Royal Caribbean The Blaster

The Blaster is just one of the additions we can expect from Navigator of the Seas (among the largest cruise ships in the world) when she relaunches on 24 February 2019 following an £87.7 million makeover.

Its counterpart, Riptide, will plunge riders headfirst down the very first mat racer at sea, allowing daredevils to travel through a translucent tube to take in the ocean views.

Royal Caribbean The Blaster

The array of onboard entertainment will also include Planet Z glow in the dark laser tag, escape room The Observatorium and the first standalone blow dry bar at sea, To Dry For.

Royal Caribbean The Blaster

That Navigator of the Seas will also be the first to visit Perfect Day at CocoCay , an escape for families on a private island in the Bahamas, featuring a waterpark with 13 jaw-dropping slides, including the tallest waterslide in North America, along with the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool.

For adults looking for some R&R on the beach, there's also a Chill Island area where you can experience floating 450 feet into the air in a hot air balloon.

Royal Caribbean Perfect Day at CocoCay

If you fancy trying this all out for yourself, you can book a four-night cruise to the Bahamas from £499 per person, departing 6 May 2019.

MSC Announces the Longest Water Slide Ever Built on a Cruise Ship

J. Souza

The MSC Preziosa will have the company’s most elaborate water park named the Doremi Castle Aqua Park .   Consisting of raised platforms, fountains, water pistols, splash zones, and a giant drenching bucket that fills up and dumps when cruisers least expect it, the water park will even had water cannons that cruisers can aim at the unsuspecting for a little mischievous fun.

But the real draw of this aqua park will be the world’s largest water slide with the suiting name “Vertigo” on deck 18.    So just how long is Vertigo?  The 42 foot high water slide will be 394 feet long and will send riders through its twists and turns at over 20 feet per second.  There are even some parts that jut out over the sides of the ship to give cruisers a thrilling view and a true feeling of vertigo.

There will be bands of clear tubing in parts of the water slide that will give the strobe light affect as cruisers shoot through the slide on this majestic cruise ship.  A 30 foot stretch of transparent tubing will allow for great views of the ocean below as well.

Keep in mind that this ride is not for everyone.  In fact the cruise line will not allow children under 47 inches to ride the gigantic water slide.  People weighing over 330 pounds will also not be permitted on Vertigo.

For kids not able to ride the water slide there will be single and double water slides in the park as well, and MSC provides adult supervision for the ship’s younger passengers.

The MSC Preziosa is the company’s 13 th ship and will complete their flagship Fantasia class.  The ship will be christened in Genoa, Italy, on March 23.

The 10 Biggest Cruise Ships in the World

Wonder of the seas.

Cruise line: Royal Caribbean

Length: 1,188 feet

Width: 215 feet

Guest capacity: 7,084

A true wonder, the current biggest ship in the world delights guests every week with a feast of activities, shows, meals and memories. Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas , an Oasis-class ship that is a city at sea, has 16 guest decks, 2,204 crew members from every corner of the planet and more than 10 bars and 20 dining destinations—nine of which are complimentary. Curiously, even though the Icon of the Seas will eventually take the mantle as the largest cruise ship, Wonder will still have more staterooms than its new big sister, a whopping 2,867 of them.

It also features a carousel on a real boardwalk, a dry slide that twists down 10 decks, surfing simulators, a laser tag arena, an ice skating rink and a zip line that spans the interior width of the ship. It also has interior rooms with balconies that look out over the restaurant and a tree-lined neighborhood that looks like Central Park. Wonder of the Seas will soon lose its crown as the biggest cruise ship in the world, but it’ll never lose its ability to provide unique vacations thanks to affordable cruises for every kind of traveler.

World Europa

Cruise line: MSC

Length: 1,093 feet

Width: 154 feet

Guest capacity: 6,762

MSC is not only a privately held shipping company, the largest in the world, they are also the maker of some of the largest cruise ships in the world. The World Europa , which took to the sea for the first time in 2022, is currently escorting passengers all over the Mediterranean, using one of the cleanest marine fuels to do so.

The World Europa features some of the best rooms on a cruise ship, thanks to having the most cabins with a balcony. It also has the world’s longest dry slide at sea, taking adventurous cruisers down 12 decks in a shiny, twisting stainless steel tube, and bumper cars in a SportsPlex arena that also hosts rollerblading—not at the same time, however. People looking for something a little less dramatic will enjoy six pools, some surrounded by tropical greenery, 14 whirlpools and MSC’s first-ever department store at sea. Finally, you’ll never go hungry on this ship , given its 10 restaurants, including four main dining rooms and three buffets.

Cruise line: P&O Cruises

Length: 1,130 feet

Width: 138 feet

Guest capacity: 6,685

Whether you want the sunshine of the Caribbean or the culture found in and around Mediterranean ports, Arvia is P&O’s largest cruise ship and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, with 1,800 crew members, a three-screen cinema complex, a wide range of staterooms to choose from and four pools, including an infinity pool with a swim-up bar. There are also nearly two dozen whirlpool spas, a sauna, steam room and a hydrotherapy pool.

This means that whether you’re taking a singles cruise or have children in tow—the Arvia is a family-friendly ship with age-specific kids clubs on board—serious rest and relaxation are definitely on the agenda. Then, when you’re feeling spry and ready for some adventure during your vacation at sea, you can try an escape room or ropes course, play in the sports arena or strut your stuff in a dance class.

Costa Toscana

Cruise line: Costa Cruises

Length: 1,105 feet

Width: 137 feet

Guest capacity: 6,600

A sister to the Smeralda , the Costa Toscana became the fleet’s largest cruise ship when it took to the water in March 2022. The ship uses LNG propulsion engines to make sea travel more sustainable, both while cruising and in ports of call around the world. An international crew of 1,678 works to deliver dream vacations for up to 6,600 passengers who will love to discover all there is to do, see and experience on board.

The ship has 1,550 staterooms ranging from interior cabins to elaborate suites, a baker’s dozen pools and whirlpools, and a total of 20 restaurants, bars and lounges. Costa’s new flagship vessel is a smart city at sea, offering subtly high-tech sailings that provide fun for the whole family, thanks to Peppa Pig character parties, an aqua park with water slides and a mind-bending skywalk 213 feet above the ocean! So book a vacation on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, then pack your cruise ducks and your appetite for learning how to cook at Toscana ‘s Food LAB cooking school, among other adventures at sea.

Celebration

Cruise line: Carnival

Guest capacity: 6,631

As cruise lines jockey for position at the top of the biggest cruise ship in the world leaderboard, the original family-fun ships are also getting larger. A total of 1,735 international crew, famously considered the best in the business, will ensure that every family’s cruise on the Celebration not only maximizes the fun but also the memories, and all at some of the most affordable prices in the cruise industry.

This ship has BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, Dr. Seuss children’s themed cruises with character appearances, and incredible water parks with multiple slides. Delicious food is made fast-and-fresh at Guy’s Burger Joint, Shaq’s Big Chicken and the Seafood Shack, as well as tasty street-food carts located near the pools. Plus, with all the extra space on the largest cruise ship in their fleet, Carnival’s Playlist Productions has more stages to dazzle you and your kids with famously fantastic live music and musical theater.

Cruise line: Norwegian

Length: 1,094 feet

Width: 136 feet

Guest capacity: 3,998

With 1,700 crew members and more than 2,000 staterooms, including suites in The Haven—Norwegian’s luxurious, private and tranquil ship-within-a-ship concept high atop the ship, which comes with 24-hour butler service and its own lavish sundeck—the Encore ranks among the largest cruise ships in the world. Curiously, this vessel from 2019 is still the largest in the Norwegian fleet! Both Prima  and the forthcoming Viva were built after Encore but are considerably smaller in size, bucking the cruise industry trend of “bigger is better.”

Encore shines as a superior and super big ship, the fourth in the Breakaway Plus class, and features a multi-deck go-kart track, the Cavern Club music venue, fashioned after the famous Liverpool room where The Beatles became big, a virtual-reality gaming room, an outdoor laser-tag arena and some of the best food at sea. No doubt, this will become one of every passenger’s favorite cruises.

Symphony of the Seas

Width: 216 feet

Guest capacity: 6,680

None of the many all-inclusive cruises take place on the largest cruise ships, but you may be forgiven for thinking you’re enjoying an all-inclusive experience on Symphony of the Seas . The ship’s many spectacular activities include a zip line that soars above the boardwalk many decks below, an old-fashioned carousel, Broadway-style theater shows, surfing simulators and the 10-story Abyss dry slide. There’s also delicious food all over the ship that is 100% complimentary. And while you may fly on the zip line over and over again, you’ll probably still wonder, Why do cruise ships have wings ?

After its maiden voyage in April 2018, Symphony was the biggest cruise ship in the world. But because of its ingenious neighborhood concept, guests rarely feel overcrowded. Seven distinct areas carve up the ship into unique spaces to play, eat, stroll, sleep and enjoy live entertainment, and the traffic flows brilliantly to make passengers feel as though they’re on a more intimate ship and not cruising with upward of 6,680 other people in more than 2,700 staterooms, some of which are interior cabins with balconies that boast views of the Central Park neighborhood’s greenery and eateries.

Cruise line: AIDA

Guest capacity: 6,654

While American travelers looking to cruise the Caribbean may not encounter her, the AIDAnova is not only the largest cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, she’s also a revolutionary lady. The ship’s Four Elements adventure deck, with its three water slides and climbing garden under the dome of a retractable glass roof, drops jaws on every sailing. The ship’s more than 2,600 staterooms with 20 different types, ranging from a glorious two-deck penthouse to budget-friendly interior cabins, allow guests to sleep well and arrive in port well rested, and the two-deck spa offering 80 different treatments provides even more healing and luxury.

But AIDAnova is also impressive because it made history as the world’s first cruise ship to be powered in port and at sea by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel. It’s important that big ships can be more sustainable, but did you ever wonder why there are big balls on cruise ships ?

Sun Princess

Cruise line: Princess

Length: 1,133 feet

Guest capacity: 4,300

The Love Boat is getting much, much bigger! Yes, this is the namesake ship from the beloved ’70s TV show. With 2,150 cabins, the Sun Princess is close to carrying 4,300 passengers to Europe for its inaugural season later this year. And then all around the world, people will be asking, “Why do cruise ships have to stop in Canada?”

The third ship in the history of the fleet to be graced with the iconic name, the S un Princess is poised to be a fan favorite. There are more than 29 bars, lounges and restaurants on board, with the Sea View Terrace and Bar ensconced in glass at the top and front of the ship, book-ended by the Wake View Terrace at the back, which has a stunning infinity pool hanging off the edge. Drawing inspiration from the tiered terraces of Santorini, Greece, this evocative area will have an indoor/outdoor pool to enjoy supreme relaxation during the day. But once the sun says goodbye, the pool becomes a stage and the dome above transforms into an entertainment venue with eye-popping lighting effects.

Length: 1,085 feet

Width: 141 feet

Guest capacity: 6,334

Come June 2023, one of the newest and biggest cruise ships at sea will be carrying eager pasengers, and more than 1,700 dedicated crew members, to world-class destinations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. While on board the Euribia , cruisers will enjoy a massive amount of personal space (100-plus square feet per person) at any one of five unique pools, including one of the most intricate waterparks at sea, covering more than 10,000 square feet.

These watery areas of rest, relaxation and revelry will comfortably accommodate more than 1,000 guests at a time. Indoors, a 360-foot-long Mediterranean-style promenade is lined with myriad shops, along with some of the 20 bars and 10 restaurants found on the ship. It also features a domed LED screen that magically displays the sky and other animations throughout the day and night. MSC continues to be a favorite cruise line of environmentalist travelers looking to ease their mind and minimize their footprint, as the Euribia has an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system that doesn’t allow any water to leave the ship without being treated and cleaned.

What is largest cruise ship in the world?

The current reigning champion is Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas. But next year, there will be a brand-new biggest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas . Planned with 20 decks, 2,805 staterooms, seven pools and nine hot tubs, the future largest ship in the world is currently being built in Finland. Here are the details about the biggest and grandest ships to sail on.

Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • Small ships are more like quaint towns, with easier navigation and more personalized service.
  • Large ships offer a wide range of eateries, bars and entertainment.

The right ship comes down to the type of vacation experience you want.

I took two cruises in July, and they couldn’t have been more different.

After spending 10 days on Seabourn Pursuit, the cruise line’s 264-guest expedition vessel, I returned home for a few days before boarding Royal Caribbean International’s Utopia of the Seas , which can accommodate over 20 times that.

Cruise ships range in size from yacht-like vessels to mega-ships that are more like floating resorts. And as much as cruises may be about the ports they visit, the ship you pick can shape the destination you can access and ultimately, the kind of trip you have. Here’s how they differ and how to know which is right for you.

What are small-ship cruises like?

If mega-ships can feel like cities at sea, small ships are perhaps more like quaint towns. It’s easier to find your way around, faces become familiar quickly and the server at the nearby eatery knows how you like your eggs.

“The service is just 100% going to be much more intense than any other type of sailing,” said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. The majority of cruise lines sailing ships with capacities in the 200 to 700 range are luxury brands that already put a premium on service – though that can vary by operator – but there are practical reasons too.

Many of those ships have higher crew-to-guest ratios, making it easier to give customers a personalized experience. “We want people to feel that it’s (a) yacht-like atmosphere,” Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn, told USA TODAY on board.

Small-ship cruises generally bundle more in their fares than those on larger vessels, from food to drinks like wine and spirits, select excursions and more. Some inclusions can be particularly extravagant.

On Seabourn, for example, guests can order caviar for delivery any time of day at no additional cost (I had to try it out for research purposes during an expedition through Western Australia’s Kimberley region ).

That doesn’t necessarily mean the price tags will be higher, though. While the upfront fare may cost more, by the time guests add up drink packages , specialty dining, Wi-Fi and other extras that are typically charged separately on large mainstream ships, their expenses may not be so different.

“Don't worry about what you're paying when you go on,” Kuther said. “It's what you pay when you come off.”

If the prospect of thousands of cabins and fellow guests seems overwhelming, a small ship can also offer a more manageable experience. Lines and crowds are a relative rarity and there’s less chance of getting lost trying to find your room (a situation I’ve encountered more than once on large ships).

Getting on and off is easier, Kuther added, with the vessels often docking closer to the city center or in ports that can’t accommodate larger vessels. They also stay overnight more frequently, relieving the pressure of packing sightseeing into a shorter window.

“That is amazing because if you've ever gotten off of a mega-ship tendering into Santorini, it's like the most insane thing,” she said. “Like, you're fighting for your life to get into the funicular. So, it’s definitely an elevated experience.”

While many are well-appointed, they do have a more limited number of amenities and dining options. On an Aurora Expeditions Antarctica cruise in December, the Sylvia Earle ship had only two restaurants. I enjoyed the food and some offerings rotated, but by the end of the 11-day trip I was ready to change it up.

Travelers with children may find the ships lacking in kid-friendly activities, too.

What are big-ship cruises like?

By contrast, guests on big ships are spoiled for choice. “You can't beat the variety if that's what you're looking for,” said Kuther.

Larger ships offer a wide range of eateries, bars and entertainment. Carnival Cruise Line’s Jubilee ship, for example, has more than 20 dining options, from Guy’s Burger Joint to tacos and burritos at BlueIguana Cantina and Coastal Slice pizza – not to mention the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster , a water park, and Loft 19, a quieter retreat at the top of the vessel.

Those kinds of ships can be particularly well-suited to families or large groups who want options. Royal Caribbean divided its Oasis Class – and later Icon Class – into neighborhoods with that in mind.

“Everyone has got something to do and are excited to do during the day … And then in the evening, everybody can come together in one of I don’t know how many restaurants and have a great family meal or a date night or just a burger, and then they have a fantastic show,” president and CEO Michael Bayley said in a media briefing on board Utopia.

Large ships have more to offer passengers “who really want to party” as well, Kuther noted.

The scale also allows cruise lines to create more immersive experiences. On Utopia, the second-largest cruise ship in the world , I had dinner outside one night at the Chops Grille steakhouse in the vessel’s Central Park neighborhood. With a breeze blowing through the open-air walkway and the sound of crickets in the background – which the cruise line pipes in – I could’ve been convinced I wasn’t on a ship.

Guests are less likely to feel the movement of the waves at that size, which also can be helpful for passengers who are fearful of water or prone to seasickness , Kuther said.

A number of cruise lines have ship-within-a-ship concepts , too, that allow guests to escape the crowds in exclusive accommodations, restaurants and sun decks, while still having access to the wider range of onboard offerings (though some offer a greater degree of separation than others).

It’s worth noting, however, that “small” and “big” are relative terms, and many mainstream cruise lines operate ships in the 1,500-to-2,500-passenger range. Those can offer a kind of middle ground, with a more intimate experience often at a lower price point (though Kuther noted that’s partly because those ships tend to be older).

Still, the overall experience of a bigger ship may cause sensory overload for some travelers.

Which is right for me?

  • If you’re looking for adventure on an expedition or want to be pampered on a quiet, lower-key vessel, small ships are the way to go.
  • If you want lots of things to do, places to eat and ways to party, consider a bigger ship . But there’s sure to be one that suits you.

As Kuther put it, “(If) people say they don't like cruising, I will always 100% say, ‘You just weren't on the right cruise.’”
