Sustainability & Green Meetings in Vienna
Vienna welcomes its visitors with a breath of fresh air. Half of the city's footprint is accounted for by green spaces. Sustainability is a major focus and so it comes as no surprise that Vienna offers the best conditions for green meetings.
Vienna is internationally recognized as the capital of environmental protection, setting an example for water supply, wastewater management, waste disposal and air quality management. Parks and gardens make up roughly half of the city, giving your participants plenty of opportunity to appreciate nature. What’s more, Vienna's tap water comes directly from pristine Alpine spring water sources, allowing you to drink directly out of the city's drinking faucets.
The Vienna Convention Bureau offers guidance on sustainability. Upon meeting all the necessary criteria, we can provide you with all the support and advice you need to certify your meeting with the Austrian Ecolabel for Green Meetings & Green Events. Time to get out into the great outdoors!

Climate-Neutral by 2040: Foreign Ministry Strengthens Austria as a Business Location and Protects Climate with Green Economic Diplomacy
On 21 October 2021, Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, kicked off an event as part of the “Business Location Austria” series at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. The event is designed to bring together foreign diplomats accredited in Austria with persons of the Austrian economic and business scene. The event focused on the green economy.
All of us need to adapt our lives, our habits, and our economy to the changing climate conditions. The Austrian government programme includes a commitment to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 and to switch to energy from 100 percent renewable sources by 2030. To reach these goals, we need active participation from innovative companies ,
said Secretary General Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal – in his view, economic growth and climate protection are by no means mutually exclusive.
At the COP26, the United Nations climate conference beginning in late October in Glasgow, the European Union (EU) will lead by example and show how it has successfully decoupled economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. While greenhouse gas emissions in the EU were reduced by 24 percent between 1990 and 2019, the economy grew by about 60 percent in the same period.
Austria’s commitment to reaching climate neutrality by 2040 is even more ambitious. ReFocus Austria, an initiative from the Austrian government in collaboration with the Economic Chamber, the Austrian tourist board, and other stakeholders, will actively contribute to the goal of climate neutrality:
ReFocus Austria is part of the federal government’s comeback plan for economic recovery after the coronavirus crisis. With this contribution, we want to jointly provide targeted support to Austrian companies abroad and to Austria as a business location. You should view us, the Austrian diplomats all over the world, as trailblazers, networkers and problem-solvers who are working for you,
promised Secretary General Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal. In keeping with Austria’s economic strengths, he said, the campaign is focusing on high-tech and future-oriented sectors. That includes renewable energy, e-mobility, sustainability and state-of-the-art green tourism.
Successful promotion of the “Green Economy Made in Austria” programme requires support from partner countries, which were represented by their ambassadors at the “Business Location Austria” event in Vienna. Through presentations by experts, they were introduced to Austrian companies and potential partnerships in the area of green business.

Austria Center Vienna: the nation’s first green conference centre In April 2014 the Austria Center Vienna became the first conference centre in the country to acquire the Umweltzeichen eco-label for conference and meeting venues. Protecting the environment and adopting a sustainable and ecologically sound approach to doing business is at the heart of Austria Center Vienna’s operations. The award also took into account the facility’s commitment to society and its treatment of employees. As an official Green Meeting and Green Events certification partner, the Austria Center Vienna encourages its customers to have their events certified and supports them throughout the process. Organisers also benefit from the additional points allocated to their events thanks to the Austria Center Vienna’s status as a certified green venue. As a licensed Green Meetings and Green Events certification body, we can certify events that meet the requirements of the Austrian Umweltzeichen eco-label.
130 Green Meetings during the EU Presidency in 2018 A major part of the conferences of the Austrian EU Presidency took place in the Austria Center Vienna and all 130 events were certified as Green Meetings. So, conferences with 36.000 delegates were conducted especially resource-saving, energy-efficient and waste-avoidant.
Room to grow ideas Big ideas need the right rooms – the key to the success of every event. The Austria Center Vienna offers 21 halls, 134 meeting rooms and more than 26,000m² of exhibition and networking space with a capacity for 22,800 people on 5 levels. This wide range of halls, rooms and outdoor spaces at the Austria Center Vienna is unrivalled in Europe, and that versatility of rooms means event concepts can be tailored to both conventional and innovative meeting formats. The Austria Center Vienna ensures outstanding knowledge transfer as well as personal and digital networking in a relaxed atmosphere: 100 Mbit Wi-Fi is provided free for each event. The digital infrastructure, unique in the world, is also perfect for hybrid congresses and events.
Green Tourism Group is a team of international experts dedicated to developing and supporting sustainable tourism development concepts, joined by seasoned, „hands on” professionals in the fields of education, innovation, sustainable tourism destinations and hospitality management/development.
Our mission, our mission is to carefully guide public and private clients in the design, development and implementation of socially, environmentally and economically viable master plans for sustainable tourism. our commitment to bridging public and private needs is supported by the development of programs to improve local education, hospitality and trade training and to encourage the growth of local family businesses, farming, manufacturing, art and handcrafts through public and private financing initiatives. we are dedicated to assisting clients in achieving the “triple bottom line” of sustainable tourism development: people, planet and profit., we see the planet as a ship that is traveling through time and space, following a path that is influenced by humans, but dictated by nature. we believe that nature is the driving force of our planet and that we should carefully act to understand it, respect it and enhance its positive effects. we are dedicated to working to drive human activity closer to its natural roots, while supporting the growth of social welfare and conscious commerce. this often means having the courage to “take the path less traveled”, find innovative, inclusive and holistic solutions to today’s challenges and help clients to do the same., in our group’s commitment to the welfare of people, to the protection of the environment and to the establishment of profit through the development of sustainable tourism, with careful planning and effective implementation, we work with a set of core values: integrity – know and do what is right, support a culture of honesty in the group respect – give value to communities and nature, encourage careful development, returning to people to the essential practices of living fairness – treat all members of the community with a standard of performance that is consistent and equal, because we believe that behaving ethically is the only right thing to do responsibility – understand and uphold the interests of all stakeholders in a project passion – be committed in heart and mind to inform, involve and inspire all project stakeholders transparency – to deal with all matters openly, making all stakeholders aware of project issues and challenges.
