Travellers Aid is about access and inclusion to enable travellers with mobility challenges to fully participate in life activities through the use of public transport.

Services provided

  • Connection assistance External Link – buggy, wheelchair assistance and personal guidance services (Southern Cross and Seymour stations), wheelchair assistance at Ballarat station)
  • Mobility equipment hire External Link – including electric scooters, manual wheelchairs, prams and strollers, walking canes, frames and sticks, crutches and ID symbol canes (Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations)
  • Luggage storage External Link
  • Companion service External Link
  • Crisis travel External Link (available from Southern Cross station)
  • Personal care External Link – includes mealtime support, personal care, toilet assistance, communication assistance, fully accessible bathroom facilities, wheelchair and scooter recharging (Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations)
  • Backpacker services External Link – including hot showers and change rooms
  • Station lounges External Link – including adult and baby change tables, breast-feeding room, drinking water and bathroom facilities (showers, change rooms).

Eligibility

Available to anyone in need regardless of background. Services operate at four station sites in metropolitan Melbourne (Southern Cross and Flinders Street) and regional Victoria (Ballarat and Seymour).

Emergency relief is available to travellers who are disadvantaged, stranded, vulnerable, distressed, homeless, at risk of homelessness or who face unexpected emergency situations.

Travellers Aid Victoria Accessible Experience

Travellers Aid Victoria Accessible Experience

Travellers Aid Victoria Accessible Experience exists to empower and enable people who face travel-related challenges. They operate from four service hubs at Southern Cross and Flinders Street Stations in Melbourne and Seymour and Ballarat Stations in regional Victoria.

Travellers Aid runs a program called the Companion Service where volunteers can meet someone at a public transport hub and accompany them to a medical appointment, accommodation, social engagement, work or school/education. For short appointments, such as medical, the volunteer will usually remain at the hospital/medical centre and accompany the person back. The service is free, however there is a 72-hour booking notification so that they can arrange a volunteer.

Travellers Aid Victoria Accessible Experience

Travellers Aid is about access and inclusion. They deliver a range of services to support travel-related accessibility for people with disability or mobility impairments.

Travellers Aids workforce consists of 75% dedicated volunteers and 25% committed staff who are motivated by creating real outcomes for the people they serve.

Travellers Aid runs permanent service sites at Southern Cross and Flinders Street Stations in Melbourne and Seymour and Ballarat Railway Stations in regional Victoria. A range of services exist at these sites, including:

  • Lounge and rest areas are available at Southern Cross and Flinders Street sites only
  • Fully accessible toilet facilities for independent use by people with disability
  • Fully accessible toilet facilities for use by persons with disability which require assistance from a carer
  • Change rooms and showers are available at Southern Cross
  • Luggage storage is available at Flinders Street
  • Mobility assistance includes buggy services, wheelchair assistance and personal guidance.

As well as permanent sites, Travellers Aid provides onsite services at events, working with major event organisers to facilitate access for patrons with mobility requirements. These services enable people to connect to and participate in Major events like the Australian Open, the Grand Prix, Moomba Festival, the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, St. Kilda Festival and Anzac Day commemorations, utilising public transport.

Is parking undercover, is the business entry step free, are all doors at your business at least 80cm wide, are all walkways at least 91cm wide, is a lift required to gain access, in general, are doors easy to open, is there a disabled bathroom, do you provide a changing station for older children and adults, is entry free of charge, maximum number of people per group, what is included in the price, time required, do you offer, or can you purchase food and drink, what should i bring, what to wear, do you accept companion card, is a reservation required, can i bring my service dog, have you tried this experience.
