Argyris and the tour were great! Been on a number of wine tours and this is the first the driver gave the tastings. Amazing to have such a knowledgeable guide on the wine and the island.

' src=

We had a really nice morning with Argyris. He was knowledgeable about the wine region in Santorini and shared us a lot of information. He was very helpful and even took us to Oia at the end of the tour. I would really recommend him. Thank you!

' src=

Honestly, this was awesome. We have a genuine interest in wine and wanted to experience the local wines, understand the varietals grown on the island, and learn about the way the grapes are grown in the harsh climate on Santorini. Our guide Argyris was brilliant, he had extensive knowledge of wine and presented the tastings at each winery. The wines were great, special mention to the Gavalas Mavrotragano which was probably our wine of the day. I highly recommend this tour – I particularly liked the option to do it later in the day, starting at 4.30pm to include the Sunset. Thanks again to Argyris for making it a special experience.

' src=

We had the best afternoon with Archie! He was extremely knowledgeable, efficient and kind. He helped us out of the car, parked up front, helped us skip the line, showed us restrooms. It was the perfect day!! We purchased some wines to bring back to the states and had wonderful charcuterie during our tastings.

' src=

Archie did a fabulous job taking us to the wineries, explaining everything very well. He even arranged lunch. He was very personable. Excellent English.

The Best Santorini Wineries and Wine Tours Worth Exploring

T here is nothing quite like visiting Santorini. Whether it’s your first time visiting the island or you have made your way back to the island on several different occasions, Santorini stands out as one of the most remarkable Greek islands to explore.

Many people fall in love with the island thanks to its breathtaking sunsets, charming white architecture, rich history, gorgeous beaches, tasty cuisine, and exceptional wines.

Having traveled extensively across Europe and been on multiple cruises, I can vouch for how memorable a stop in Santorini is. If your cruise happens to include a day or two in Santorini , don’t hesitate to book a shore excursion to explore any of the wineries in the area.

Santorini wineries not only provide breathtaking views of the island but also offer an opportunity to indulge in the unique local flavors.

Continue reading below as I dive into the best vineyards on the island worth spending some time at.

The History of Santorini Vineyards And Wine Production

The uniqueness of Santorini wines can be largely attributed to the specific unique climate that nurtures the grapevines. The island experienced a major volcanic eruption around 1600 BC, reshaping its soil.

Today, Santorini grapes flourish in pumice soil, enriched with volcanic ash and lava, and notably lacking in organic matter or clay. This rare soil acts as a natural defense against phylloxera, an insect that poses a threat to grapevines globally.

Another factor that contributes to the unique taste of the wines in the area is that Santorini experiences very low rainfall. Typically you would think that the lack of rain in the area would lead to dry vines but instead, the salty air on the island helps the plants flourish.

On top of the unique volcanic soil and limited rainfall, Santorini is known for its exceptionally strong winds that sweep across the island. These high winds present a challenge to the health of the grapevines.

To address this, vineyard producers have adopted a unique practice of shaping the vines into basket formations known as koulouri.

This formation serves as a protective barrier against the winds, creating a shelter for the growing fruit inside the vines and shielding it from both wind and intense heat.

These distinctive characteristics really make the history of winemaking special in Santorini. The unique conditions throughout the island make a huge impact on the wine industry on the island and how the grapes are grown and cultivated.

You can sense the genuine dedication of the Santorini locals to their vines and this commitment truly reflects in the amazing wines they produce.

That’s why exploring Santorini wineries on your vacation is must.

Best Time To Visit Santorini Wineries

The best time to visit wineries on the island is between the months of June through August. Although the summer months are the most crowded, it’s well worth a visit due to the incredible weather.

This is a great time to sip on wines throughout the island because you will likely experience incredible weather to walk through the vineyards and savor the wines outside.

Best Santorini Wineries

Given that there are around 20 wineries across the island, it’s essential to pinpoint the top ones so that you can have the best time possible.

Santowines Winery

There’s something so special about sipping on Santo wines and taking in the Caldera views.

This winery is one of the best on the island and is one of the largest. If I had to pick just one winery to visit while in Santorini, I would probably pick this one!

Largely because of its breathtaking views but also because of its large size and popularity. I recommend trying their wine tasting experience so that you can test out a few different wines and learn more about their flavors and production.

Venetsanos Winery

Operated by the Venetsanos family and famous for being the first industrial winery on Santorini back in 1947, the Venetsanos Winery is rich in history.

What makes this winery really stand out is its unique design that was built for energy efficiency when electricity was limited back in the day.

Unlike most buildings, this winery was constructed from above and built downwards.

Today this family run winery and vineyard is famous for its delicious wines made out of indigenous grape varieties and is one of the best places to savor wine on the island.

Gaia Winery

If you’re looking for stunning beach views, Gaia Winery is an outstanding choice. The location is simply unbeatable.

I recommend kicking off your day at the beach and then making your way to Gaia Winery in the afternoon or evening for a delightful wine-tasting experience.

Domaine Sigalas Winery

Another outstanding winery on the island, is Domaine Sigalas Winery.

This one is known for its exceptional food and wine pairing and countless people rave about the Volcano Divers Tasting Experience.

This tasting includes a walk through of the vineyard with a sommelier and food pairings with 5 different tastings of their top wines.

Vassaltis Vineyard

Vassaltis Vineyard is another incredible choice for wineries on the island.

This winery is known for its modern yet Greek architecture and design that encompasses its winemaking facilities and tasting room.

This is one of the newest wineries on the island and you can tell by its unique architecture that strives to blend contemporary and modern designs. But, don’t let their newness fool you.

They know what they are doing when it comes to creating high quality Greek wine.

Gavalas Winery

This small winery is family run by fourth and fifth generation winemakers. They are known for their delicious white wines and traditional architecture.

They produce ten different wines and offer some excellent wine tastings. Gavalas Winery is the perfect place to visit if you are looking for a more intimate experience.

Hatzidakis Winery

This winery was founded by Haridimos Hatzidakis and Konstantina Chryssou and originated because of their passion for wines, most of which are organic.

If you prioritize eating and drinking organic foods and beverages this is a great place to visit on the island because they offer several different organic wine choices.

Estate Argyros Winery

The Estate Argyros Winery stands as one of the largest on the island, renowned for its premium-quality wines crafted over a remarkable 110-year history. I suggest sampling their Vinsanto or dessert wines for a delightful experience.

While the winery may lack outstanding views or elaborate architecture, it compensates with the incredible quality of its wines, making it an ideal destination for true wine lovers seeking the best in the region.

Koutsoyannopoulous Winery

If you’re seeking the ultimate wine adventure, don’t miss the Koutsoyannopoulos Winery. This winery is home to the Santorini Wine Museum, offering an educational experience on winemaking and diverse wine varieties.

It presents the perfect opportunity to explore the nuances of wine cellars, the craftsmanship of winemaking, and the distinct flavors found in Santorini wines.

Boutari Winery

Boutari Winery stands as one of the most famous wine companies in Greece, with a legacy of crafting exquisite wines spanning 140 years. The winery is particularly known for its amazing tasting room.

Artemis Karamolegos Winery

Another popular winery is the Artemis Karamolegos Winery which is known for its reasonably priced wines, beautiful small garden, and for its cooking class.

If you are looking for the ultimate Santorini experience, I recommend checking out their cooking class which includes making a local Greek dish and its accompanied by some of their delicious wines.

Canava Roussos Winery

For those seeking a charming setting, this petite winery is an excellent choice, boasting a variety of wines to sample. One standout feature is its lovely shaded patio, providing an ideal spot to enjoy wine on a warm summer evening.

Art Space Winery

This distinctive Santorini winery not only offers delectable wines but also doubles as an art space.

Wander through the venue to discover numerous vibrant paintings and sculptures while savoring their delicious wines.

Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a wine lover, or both, it’s an ideal destination to spend a few hours, appreciating the artistry and indulging in a glass or two of wine.

Where To Stay

There are countless different accommodation options to choose between on Santorini. Below I have pinpointed some of my favorites for a memorable time on the island.

The  Athina Luxury Suites  is one of the best hotels on the island. It’s known for its incredible views, awesome pool, and fabulous restaurant and bar.

Another outstanding choice is  Winery Hotel 1870 . It’s an ideal option for wine enthusiasts, given its distinctive history as a former winery. Today, it has been transformed into a hotel with a one-of-a-kind design.

The  Aressana Spa Hotel & Suites  is another phenomenal choice. This hotel is known for its location near many of the top attractions on the island and for its spa, pool, and tasty restaurant.

Tips For Visiting Wineries In Santorini

A key recommendation is to plan ahead and choose your favorite wineries before your visit to optimize your time on the island, being decisive is crucial.

I also suggest exploring a mix of wineries to enjoy a diverse range of flavors.

Furthermore, wearing comfortable walking shoes is essential. Whether you’re savoring each glass of wine or taking a stroll through vineyards and tasting rooms, having comfortable footwear is a must.

Lastly, remember to stay well-hydrated. It’s important to avoid dehydration during your excursion and to ensure you’re not too tipsy to fully appreciate the experience.

Beyond Wine: Santorini Breweries To Check Out

If you want a break from wine in Santorini there are a few different breweries you can check out around the island for a fun time. I’ve highlighted some of the best below:

Ftelos Brewery Santorini – MALT Restaurant

This brewery and restaurant stands out as one of the prime spots for beer on the island. Renowned for their delectable beer flights, allowing you to sample various options and find your favorites, they also boast an impressive menu of truly incredible food.

If you’re looking for a break from wine or simply want to explore the beer scene on the island, don’t hesitate to visit this place for both exceptional beer and food.

Santorini Brewing Company

This brewery is known for its “lagered ales,” presenting a variety of options to explore. I suggest sampling a range of their beers and purchasing some bottles to-go to enjoy throughout your stay in Santorini.

It’s an excellent choice if you’re seeking a departure from the island’s delightful wines and are in the mood for something a bit more hoppy.

Adventure view of Red Beach in , Santorini, Greece

Embark on a vibrant journey to the stunning Red Beach, a natural masterpiece famed for its striking crimson-hued sands. Nestled on the volcanic island of Santorini, Greece, this unique spot offers a blend of adventure and surreal landscapes that beckons the thrill-seeker within. **Getting There:** Your adventure begins in Fira, the bustling capital of Santorini. From Fira, you can catch a local bus towards Akrotiri, a prehistoric village that hosts fascinating ruins and storied pasts. The bus ride, which lasts about 20 minutes, offers scenic views of the island’s rugged landscapes and azure sea. Once in Akrotiri, Red Beach is just a short 15-minute walk away. Follow the signs and take a gentle hike down to the beach, where the crimson sands await. **At Red Beach:** As you descend down the rocky path to Red Beach, the reason behind its name becomes overwhelmingly apparent – the iron-rich rocks that hem the beach glow under the sun in fiery red and orange hues. The beach is partially surrounded by soaring red lava cliffs, which provide a stunning backdrop for your adventurous swim or snorkel. The clear blue waters are home to a vibrant marine life, ideal for snorkeling. **Interesting Facts:** - Red Beach’s coloration is due to the iron-rich sedimentary rocks eroded from the steep cliffs that encircle it. - It is located near the ancient site of Akrotiri, which is often referred to as the "Minoan Pompeii" due to its well-preserved ruins from the Theran eruption around 1627 BCE. **Tips:** - Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a good camera – the unique contrast of red rock against the blue sea makes for spectacular photos. - Arrive early or late in the day to avoid the crowds and experience the beach at its most serene. As the sun sets, casting a golden glow over the red cliffs, your adventure at one of the world’s most unusual beaches will leave you with memories as vivid as its sands.

White Beach

Once you arrive, check into a beachside eco-lodge that offers quick access to the ocean and a tranquil retreat. **Day 2: Water Sports and Hiking** Kickstart your morning with some adrenaline-pumping water sports! Join a local surf school located right on the beachfront for a two-hour surf lesson. The waves at White Beach are perfect for both beginners and seasoned surfers. Post-surfing, grab a quick seafood lunch at a nearby shack, famous for its fresh catches and spicy mango salad. In the afternoon, gear up for a guided hike to the nearby cliffs. The trail begins at the northern end of the beach, a short 15-minute walk from the main area. The hike is moderately challenging, with steep sections that reward you with panoramic views of the coastline. Carry plenty of water and sunscreen! **Day 3: Deep Sea Adventure** Dive into the deep blue with a certified diving expedition that takes you to coral reefs and underwater caves, teeming with marine life. These guided tours are perfect for intermediate divers and offer a chance to encounter rare aquatic creatures unique to this region. **Day 4: Local Culture and Departure** Before you say goodbye, visit the local village market in the morning. It’s a 10-minute scooter ride inland and offers insight into the local way of life with its vibrant stalls selling everything from handmade crafts to exotic fruits. Depart for the city post-lunch, with your heart full of adventures and your camera full of memories. **Interesting Fact:** White Beach is named for its stunningly white, silica-rich sand, which is believed to have therapeutic properties! **Travel Tip:** Always check local weather conditions before heading out on water-related activities, as currents can be strong depending on the season.

Santorini Hot Springs

Adventure view of Santorini Hot Springs in , Santorini, Greece

### Ultimate Adventure Lover’s Tour to Santorini Hot Springs **Day 1: Arrival in Santorini** Touch down in the enchanting island of Santorini! Get settled in your choice of cliff-perched lodgings which offer panoramic views of the azure Aegean Sea. Prepare for an exhilarating journey that combines breathtaking landscapes with a dive into the island’s volcanic heart. **Day 2: Journey to the Hot Springs** Start your day early and catch a local bus from Fira to the old port, where you"ll board a traditional caique (fishing boat) that sails to the famed hot springs. As you approach, the striking contrast between the iron-rich red and ochre cliffs against the turquoise waters sets a dramatic scene. The boat anchors off the small, uninhabited islet of Palea Kameni, and it’s time for your aquatic adventure. Dive into the warm, sulfuric waters, which are known for their therapeutic properties. The temperature here ranges from 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F), heated by the volcanic activity beneath. Swimming towards the springs, feel the temperature subtly rise, a natural phenomenon resulting from the island’s volcanic heat! **Day 3: Exploring Earth’s Power** Post-springs, take a hike up to the Nea Kameni’s volcanic crater, a short boat ride away. The path winds through rugged, moon-like landscapes and offers an insight into the geothermal forces shaping these islands. From the summit, enjoy a panoramic view that stretches across Santorini—perfect for those awe-inspiring Instagram moments. **Interesting Fact**: The last eruption of Nea Kameni was in 1950, and its active state means it’s continuously monitored. **Day 4: Departure** Bid farewell to Santorini with a sunrise yoga session overlooking the caldera. As you pack your bags, you’re not just taking souvenirs but memories of adrenaline-pumped explorations and the tranquility of nature’s wonders. Whether you’re soaking in heated waters or trekking volcanic paths, Santorini offers more than just sunsets and blue domes—it’s an adventure lover’s paradise waiting to be explored!

Santorini Volcano

Adventure view of Santorini Volcano in , Santorini, Greece

Get ready for an exhilarating journey through the ancient, awe-inspiring landscapes of Santorini, focusing on the majestic centerpiece: the Santorini Volcano, or Nea Kameni. This adventure is perfect for thrill-seekers and history buffs alike. **Day 1: Arrival in Fira** Start your Santorini adventure in the island’s bustling capital, Fira. Arrange your stay in one of the cliff-perched hotels offering panoramic views of the caldera. Spend your evening wandering through the cobblestone streets, enjoying the local cuisine at a terrace restaurant overlooking the Aegean Sea. **Day 2: Voyage to the Volcano** Embark on your volcanic adventure by catching a boat from the old port of Fira. You can access the port via cable car from Fira or by donkey ride for a more traditional approach. Opt for a guided boat tour that includes stops at Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni, and Thirassia. Tours usually start around 11 AM and last about 6 hours. Upon reaching Nea Kameni, hike the rugged paths leading to the active volcano’s crater. The hike is moderately challenging, so wear comfortable shoes! As you ascend, your guide will recount tales of the volcano’s formation and its colossal eruption in 1600 BC, which shaped the current landscape of Santorini. **Day 3: Hot Springs and Sunset in Oia** Visit the sulfuric hot springs at Palea Kameni, where you can dive into the warm, therapeutic waters just off the coast—a surreal experience. Later, head to the enchanting village of Oia. Famous for its sunset, find a spot at the castle or by the windmills, and watch the sky and sea glow in the golden hour. **Day 4: Departure** Before your departure, grab some local goodies like volcanic stone jewelry or a bottle of Assyrtiko, Santorini"s prized wine, as a memento of your volcanic venture.
