Outfit - Section 31 Badge

A black badge used by members of Section 31 in the mid-23rd century

Section 31 is a rogue organization that violates the law and ethics of the Federation in the course of defending Federation interests. Section 31 is distinct from Starfleet Intelligence, and is considered more of a counterpart to the Tal Shiar and Obsidian Order than Starfleet Intelligence due to its extra-judicial operations.

While they report to no one and are not sanctioned by Starfleet of the Federation, they are known to have enabling accomplices and supporters at the highest levels of the chain of command. In the 24th Century , Starfleet does not acknowledge the existence of Section 31 although it operated more openly during the 23rd Century .

Section 31 dates back to the founding of Starfleet on United Earth in the 22nd Century ; its name derives from Section 31 of the Starfleet charter that grants extraordinary measures in times of extreme threat.

Star trek online introduces section 31 command heavy battlecruiser.

When it comes to top secret organizations, few things are as they appear, and the Section 31 Command Heavy Battlecruiser is a master of deceptive appearances – provided your sensors will even pick it up. Its powerful stealth capabilities are backed by a giant swarm of fighters to overwhelm any foes it encounters, and its infiltration capabilities are unmatched.
This vessel comes with a built in Swarm Mode. When activated, hundreds of fighter vessels will pour out of your ship, and fire on anything hostile that approaches you. A number of these drones will frequently peel off from the main swarm to attack any larger vessels that approach you. Activating Swarm Mode will increase your ship’s maneuverability, but at a small price to hull capacity. Swarm Mode cannot be activated while Dark Mode is active.
While this trait is slotted, every several seconds in combat, you will receive a secret mission to take out a nearby enemy. When that foe gets out of range or is defeated, you will acquire a new marked foe as your new secret mission. The marked foe is less resistant to you, and when they are defeated, a swarm of Section 31 Attack Drones will spawn to hunt down other targets.
The Section 31 Command Heavy Battlecruiser additionally comes with Dark Mode. When activated, Dark Mode will give your ship a massive stealth bonus, rendering you invisible to any nearby sensors. However, this boost comes with a risk – your shields will be offline for as long as Dark Mode is active. When Dark Mode ends, you gain a major damage boost for a short duration. Dark Mode can only be activated out of combat.
The Section 31 Command Heavy Battlecruiser comes equipped with the Forged Turncoat Universal Console. Activating this console will fire a stream of nanites at the target. Upon infecting it, the nanites will override its normal targeting, causing it to attack its former allies. While it attacks its former allies, its damage output will be significantly increased, and when the effects of the nanites wear off, the ship will be disabled for a short duration. This console additionally provides a passive boost to Critical Severity and Weapon Power. It can be equipped in any console slot, on any ship. You may only equip one of these consoles.

Previously when the project was announced , Yeoh shared, "I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long. Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!"

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Michelle Yeoh, and is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Star Trek: Section 31 – what we know about the in-development spin-off

Spoilers ahead

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek : Section 31 will be fronted by her Most Imperial Majesty, Mother of the Fatherland, Overlord of Vulcan, Dominus of Qo’noS, Regina Andor… But you know her best as Philippa Georgiou.

Currently in development, the latest series in Paramount Plus ’s rapidly expanding fleet of Trek TV shows promises to give the brilliant Michelle Yeoh top billing as Georgiou. Having established herself as one of the standout players as Star Trek: Discovery mapped out the new frontier of the 32nd century, the former totalitarian ruler of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire will be back in more familiar territory in this spin-off. She’ll be returning to the ranks of Section 31, the morally questionable intelligence agency that operates in the shadows of the Federation.

With Star Trek: Section 31 still waiting for a greenlight (and an official title), plot specifics are currently under wraps, but there’s still plenty of information out there about a series destined to become the 12th Star Trek TV show.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Further Adventures of Philippa Georgiou, aka Star Trek: Section 31 – on a need-to-know basis, obviously…

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – what we know
  • How to watch Star Trek in order
  • What we know about Picard season 2

Star Trek: Section 31 release date: when will the show get an official stardate?

While Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Picard season 2 and Strange New Worlds are already in production, Section 31’s exact status is more of a mystery – who knows, maybe that’s appropriate for an organization that deals primarily in secrets.

In December 2020, Michelle Yeoh told TV Insider that, “I know the EPs [executive producers] and writers and my team are still working very hard because we have a lot more stories to tell. I hope it will be very soon.”

A Star Trek: Section 31 release date may not be quite as soon as she hoped, however.

When asked by Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 whether Section 31 was still on the Federation agenda, Akiva Goldsman (a co-showrunner on Picard and Strange New Worlds) said, “I don't know. I believe so.” He added that, "Alex has a plan,” referring to Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer charged with overseeing the TV branch of the Trek franchise.

Meanwhile, Shazad Latif – who played Ash Tyler in the first two seasons of Discovery, and is likely to be one of the stars of Star Trek: Section 31 – has said that, “It’s just been slight yeses, slight questions, but I've no idea. I think it's down to people's schedules.”

Hardly words that suggest production on the new show is imminent.

In fact, we may be talking years rather than months. That’s because Section 31 is part of streaming service Paramount Plus’s grand, overarching strategy for the TV future of the franchise – and the new show is effectively waiting for an empty slot to appear on the roster.

“We’re very careful about curating the pacing – the number of shows at any given time – and what those shows are, so that we make sure that it’s always exciting when there’s a new show coming out,” Paramount Plus programming boss Julie McNamara told Variety in February. She added that the service is looking to debut “a new Trek [show] a quarter”, and that “conversations” about Section 31 are still happening.

This suggests that Paramount Plus won’t be looking to expand on the current Trek slate of Discovery, Picard, animated comedy Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds and upcoming kids’ cartoon Star Trek: Prodigy until one of the existing shows runs its course. It therefore seems likely the Star Trek: Section 31 release date is still a long way down the line – our most optimistic guess is mid-to-late 2022, though it could be as far away as 2023 or beyond.

That said, McNamara did hint that nobody at Paramount is expecting Star Trek: Picard to go on forever: “Perhaps an older lead is only committed to a certain number of seasons and therefore we move on from that,” she teased. If Picard runs its course in, say, three seasons, the turbolift doors would open for Section 31 much sooner.

Expect to watch Star Trek: Section 31 on Paramount Plus in the US. With other Trek shows spread across Netflix and Amazon Prime Video internationally, it’s still unknown where the new show will materialize in other star systems and territories.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A Star Trek: Discovery spin-off featuring Philippa Georgiou, former Emperor of the Terran Empire, that doesn't technically have a title yet. It's informally referred to as Section 31, however.
  • Where can I watch it? Like all of the Star Trek shows, it’ll almost definitely be available on Paramount Plus (formerly CBS All Access) in the US. Broadcasters in other territories are TBC.
  • When can I watch it? With production yet to get underway, that’s still classified.

What is Section 31?

Section 31 is an undercover intelligence organisation in the Star Trek universe.

Although the United Federation of Planets traditionally portrays itself as a benign, utopian society, there are darker forces operating behind the scenes. Formed under ‘Article 14, Section 31’ of the Starfleet charter, Section 31 was permitted to carry use “extraordinary measures” in the name of protecting the Federation’s lofty ideals. In other words, morally dubious behaviour comes as standard.

Section 31 made its first screen appearance in Deep Space Nine season 6 episode ‘Inquisition’, when Agent Luther Sloan arrived on the station, suspecting one of the crew of being a Dominion spy.

It’s since been revealed that Section 31 had been in operation for years, all the way back to the early days of Starfleet. In the pre-Kirk and Spock Star Trek: Enterprise, security officer Lt Malcolm Tucker turned out to be a Section 31 agent, while it was Section 31 who recruited John Harrison (aka Khan) to help beef up Starfleet’s defenses in the alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline of Star Trek into Darkness.

The agency was also a major antagonist in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, when they investigated Spock’s escape from a psychiatric hospital, and accused him of murdering three doctors. In fact, Section 31 was so persistent that the USS Discovery had to go rogue from Starfleet to protect Spock from their clutches.

It later turned out that Section 31 was operating under directions from Control, the Federation’s Skynet-like AI that would ultimately prove a threat to all life in the galaxy – until Discovery carried the vital ‘Sphere Data’ into the future.

  • What we know about Star Trek: Discovery season 4

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Section 31 cast: who will star in the Discovery spin-off?

Star Trek: Discovery

The new show will be built around Philippa Georgiou (played by Tomorrow Never Dies/Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh), the former Emperor of the Terran Empire who crossed universes to join the Discovery crew – and became the most memorable, most quotable character on board the ship.

“The truth is that for Section 31 the idea of doing that show, it was Michelle Yeoh’s,” Star Trek overseer Alex Kurtzman said in a 2020 Variety Screening Room Q&A (via TrekMovie ). “She deserves all the credit for that. She actually came to me about it before we even aired the first season of Discovery. She loved playing the character and she said, ‘I know that there are a lot of young women who grew up like I did and did not see somebody like me on screen and I want to be that person.’ And I said, ‘That sounds amazing! Let’s do it.’

“But we didn’t know if people were going to like Discovery, so I said, ‘Let’s see how it works, and if we can get there let’s get there.’ She killed it. She did amazing work on the show. And then in season 2, we really started digging into the mythology of Section 31, which had been dealt with on other shows. And we started seeing a way to do it. And so we got there.”

Yeoh’s played two versions of Philippa Georgiou in Discovery. The first was the respected captain of Starfleet’s USS Shenzhou, Michael Burnham’s mentor who died at the ‘Battle at the Binary Stars’ that kickstarted a Federation/Klingon war.

We met her doppelganger when Discovery’s spore drive accidentally carried the ship into the Mirror Universe we’d previously visited in the original Star Trek, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. Here Georgiou was the Emperor of the totalitarian Terran Empire, an organization where any sign of weakness is punishable by death.

After the Discovery crew took down her flagship, the ISS Charon, Georgiou offered to sacrifice herself to aid Burnham’s escape – the pair share a bond across universes – but Burnham opted to take her back to her ship.

Once the Mirror Georgiou was resident in the Prime Universe, Section 31 wanted to capitalize on her moral flexibility and unique set of skills, so recruited her to their ranks. This brought her back into Discovery’s orbit, but she ultimately turned on her Section 31 masters when Control took, well, control. She remained on board Discovery when it travelled to the distant future of the 32nd century.

This left many Trek fans wondering how Georgiou could possibly appear in the Star Trek: Section 31 spin-off, but luckily the Discovery showrunners had a plan. As Georgiou’s body started to be torn apart in the future, phasing in and out of reality, future-Starfleet intelligence guy Kovich explained that the fact her molecules had crossed universes and travelled centuries through time had made her body inherently unstable. Unlikely salvation came in the form of Original Series portal/plot device the Guardian of Forever (from classic episode ‘The City on the Edge of Forever’), who offered her a chance to travel closer to the time she came from…

Beyond Yeoh, casting is TBC, though we wouldn’t be surprised to see a return for Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler. The Klingon/human hybrid was in charge of Section 31 when Discovery blasted off to the future – he’s also one of the few people aware of the ship’s true fate – so it’s logical that he’d be Georgiou’s first point of contact. Assuming, of course, the Guardian of Forever sent her back to her original time.

Star Trek: Section 31 plot: what will the new show be about?

Star Trek Discovery

That’s the big question, because aside from the fact it’ll feature Georgiou and involve Section 31, the new show is something of an open book.

We do know it'll be different to any Trek we've seen before. “We’re aiming to have our shows feel unique and different from each other,” Kurtzman told Variety. “We want to give everybody a reason to watch each show.”

He also added that, while there'll be an “interconnectedness” between each Trek series, you won't have to watch everything to keep up as you do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “Our goal is not to make it so insular that if you haven't seen the show you're lost when you watch another show.”

It seems most likely the Guardian of Forever sent Georgiou back to a time just after she and the Discovery crew travelled to the 32nd century. With Section 31 decimated by all those issues with Control, rebuilding will almost certainly be at the top of the agenda – and who better to help Tyler than Georgiou?

“I hope in the short time she was [in the future], being the amazing engineer and smart cookie she is, she would’ve learned a lot about that time period that she would be able to take with her,” Yeoh told TV Insider. “Can you imagine what she could bring back to the past? Without changing the future, of course. Developments that could make a huge difference, and if it was Section 31, that’s what Section 31 is all about, isn’t it?”

In fact, her resumé is going to be attractive to any 23rd century HR department. Not only does she have experience of the future and managing an interstellar empire, her time on board Discovery has softened some of her more psychotic edges.

“She’s definitely had a change of heart,” Yeoh explained in an interview with Bustle . “She had an awakening in the sense that she realized yes, you could rule with fear and tyranny, but only for a short period. This was what she learned from being in the Prime Universe. It’s about compassion, about hope. It’s about when people have nothing to lose, then they don’t care anymore. And when you don’t care, you don’t have a future.”

There may also be some rebuilding to do in the Mirror Universe, so don’t rule out the prospect of Georgiou finding a way back to her original home. Indeed, after Kovich revealed that the Terran Empire had collapsed long before the 32nd century, she may see this as an opportunity to reshape it in her own image.

“The Terran empire disappeared 500 years ago,” Yeoh said in TV Insider. “There were no more crossings, we were never heard from again, and the only thing you can come away with that is that we destroyed ourselves. I think she realized that when she went back to Michael Burnham and she said, ‘How many more times are people going to revolt against us? If we don’t give the people some kind of peace and harmony, we are just going to kill ourselves.’ She learned that just by killing, that was not the answer or the way to rule moving forward.”

Section 31's success will likely dictate the next era of Star Trek content

I t's beyond obvious that Paramount is moving away from Star Trek television/streaming series for their future projects. The shows have been hit or miss and have catered to a shrinking number of fans, save for Strange New Worlds. While the quality is there, the value isn't. Paramount isn't happy with how much money these shows are taking to make, compared to the viewership figures they bring in.

It's why Paramount+ only has one series in active development beyond this year. Sure, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is being worked on, but until it starts airing, the only show on Paramount+ beyond this summer is Strange New Worlds.

That doesn't mean that Star Trek is dead, far from it. Right now there are three, with a rumored fourth film in active development. The Star Trek Kelvin prequel, Star Trek 4, Star Trek: Section 31 and a mystery fourth film that appears to be in the early stages of development.

Section 31 is the film that everyone needs to have their eyes on, as its'll be the first non theatrical film in the franchise's history. It'll air on Paramount+, assuming it's still around when the film is done, and the idea is to see how fans embrace a made-for-streaming film on a budget as opposed to traditional Star Trek shows.

Even Jonathan Frakes, a Star Trek legend, believes that this is the new format going forward, telling TrekMovie.com ;

“I do know that there’s a lot of positive energy around the Michelle Yeoh Section 31 movie. So that 2-hour format is now on the table for Star Trek going forward.”

The idea does seem to cut costs drastically, while still making Star Trek content that could last for weeks as a film concept. It doesn't mean that the series is moving away from shows like Strange New Worlds, but it's likely a more fiscally responsible idea, considering a film costs less than most shows these days.

The Section 31 Lock Box

By Ambassador Kael | Thu 09 May 2019 09:00:00 AM PDT

star trek online section 31

Section 31. The Tal Shiar. The Obsidian Order.

Intelligence services like ours have always been shrouded in mystery and the allure of power. One day, it will likely be known that the Romulan Star Empire was manipulated into war with the Dominion. When that day comes, it will brush aside the other legacies of Captain Benjamin Sisko like footnotes for all but Bajor’s faithful.

Stories of secret intelligence service have resonated with us throughout the ages. The means they use (and the ends which justify them) cast a long and deadly shadow, shrouding the victors in a heavy moral gray. Folk scarcely notice the extra wrinkles on their leader’s face as they stand among the ruins of a town sacrificed to keep a secret.

From the tiny spec that listens in the right room to the ultimate prize of a compromised head of state, intelligence services are a heavy burden and powerful tool for any nation. Star Trek , and more specifically Starfleet, has a special challenge here: how can an idealized state reconcile the clandestine service? In a future ruled by science and peer-reviewed morality, who watches the watchmen? With Section 31’s capabilities come its responsibilities. As you step into the shadows and find these decisions in your own hands, you will come back changed, we hope for the better.

The Lobi Consortium claims to have gained access to a cache of advanced intelligence gear. Sophisticated equipment and even entire ships have appeared for sale to the highest bidder.

The Section 31 Lock Box contains unregulated tech, often secret prototypes that never saw full production, advanced technology waiting for wider adoption, and sometimes stranger things still—even “borrowed” Terran or alien technology. The less Starfleet science required, the more plausible the deniability.

This offering includes a ship, space weapons, personal traits, and an unusually large variety of universal consoles, starship traits and kit modules. Each box also contains a Faulty Section 31 Holo-Disguise which breaks upon entering combat, apparently some sort of economic inducement. Typical.

The Section 31 Lock Box contains two highly advanced Grand Prizes: the Section 31 Intel Science Destroyer [T6] and the Na’Qjej Intel Battlecruiser [T6] . More details about both ships will be available in a future blog post.

star trek online section 31

Certain facets of the Section 31 Intel Science Destroyer [T6] ’s engineering rule out all known shipyards, but the technology is clearly, primarily, Starfleet… primarily. With classified systems and additional procurement discretion, this ship is more than meets the eye, if anything meets the eye at all. For times where its stealth capabilities are insufficient or undesirable, its firepower rises to meet the challenge.

The Section 31 Intel Science Destroyer comes equipped with the Enhanced Tractor Drones Universal Console . When activated, this console locks onto the target with an Enhanced Tractor Drone, dealing them kinetic damage, significantly decreasing their maneuverability, and pulling them slightly towards you. Locking onto the target with multiple Enhanced Tractor Drones will increase the damage dealt by each. Tractor Drones are regained every several seconds, and up to 3 can be stored at a time.

This console also provides a passive boost to starship particle generators and weapon accuracy. It can be equipped in any console slot, on any ship. You may only equip one of these consoles.

After achieving level 5 in the Section 31 Intel Science Destroyer Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Exitus Acta Probat Starship Trait. While this trait is slotted, activating any Intelligence Ability or Jam Sensors will increase your stealth, control expertise, and weapon damage for a short duration.

star trek online section 31

Unlike the Federation’s use of disguise to run away, the Klingon Empire uses stealth technology to go forth and fight, and few ships show that as well as the Na’Qjej Intel Battlecruiser [T6] . A brutal ship with its share of past glory, the Na’Qjej has been retrofitted and is the perfect vessel for anyone looking to find their place in the ranks of the glorious Klingon Empire. Powerful stealth technology lets you choose the right moment to strike, and the ship’s strengthened hull and aggressive weapons layout will ensure that today is a good day to die indeed, for anyone in your way.

The Na’Qjej Intel Battlecruiser comes equipped with the Glorious Charge Universal Console . When activated, your starship engages in glorious combat with your target, significantly increasing your kinetic damage resistance and breaking their puny starship across your hull.

This console also provides a passive boost to Torpedo Damage and Flight Speed. It can be equipped in any console slot, on any ship. You may only equip one of these consoles.

After achieving level 5 in the Na’Qjej Intel Battlecruiser Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Ceaseless Momentum starship trait. While this trait is slotted, firing any torpedo will grant you a significant boost to Kinetic Damage and Kinetic Damage Resistance for a short duration. This stacks up to five times.

(Additional information on the above starships will be contained in a separate Developer Blog.)

Two special consoles can be acquired from the Section 31 Lock Box as well: The Boronite Laced Weaponry Universal Console and the Computer-Assisted Flight Algorithms Universal Console .

star trek online section 31

The Computer-Assisted Flight Algorithms console allows your ship to perform Flanking maneuvers in space, dealing additional damage to the enemy’s rear arc and improving your turn and flight speed. When active, attacks to the enemy’s front increase the maneuverability bonuses and provide Damage Resistance, while attacks to the enemy’s rear deal even greater bonus damage and reduce the console’s own cooldown.

star trek online section 31

The Boronite Laced Weaponry console infuses your ship’s weapons with specially prepared boronite, causing your weapon attacks to tear open rifts in subspace near your primary target and draw all existing rifts to that location. Rifts deal kinetic damage over time to nearby hulls.

Two new Starship Traits are also available in the Section 31 Lock Box : Need-to-Know Basis and The Exercise of Vital Powers .

Need-to-Know Basis is an ace up your sleeve, charged by activated Ensign Bridge Officer Abilities. Using 10 of these causes a Section 31 Intel Science Destroyer to appear and fight alongside you for 31 seconds, dealing significant area of effect damage with its abilities and opening up a full salvo with its weapons suite.

Nano-infestation is a formidable spaceborn affliction built with nano-scale blueprints recovered from Section 31 archives. It infects the target ship when you activate a Control Bridge Officer ability, causing its replicators to make copies of itself. After an incubation period, it spreads to all nearby enemy ships, infecting them with the same damage over time.

Additionally, the  Section 31 Lock Box  has new Space weapons within the  Section 31 Weapon Pack . Covert weaponry optimized for discretion, these Phasers are available as either cannon or beams. These weapons generate half as much Threat as normal weapons, and replace the traditional Phaser proc with a boost to flight speed and turn rate. Rarely, weapon packs contain the Section 31 Shield , providing the aesthetics of the Section 31 Intel Science Destroyer to a ship that equips it in its vanity shield slot.

Captains may also find Section 31 Kit Module packs. These Kit Modules are universal, and can be used by any class.

  • A concept “borrowed” from Gabriel Lorca of the Terran Empire, these spheres of dark matter deal physical damage over time to any enemy they strike, eventually disintegrating them in spectacular fashion. The damage continues as long as the target lives.

  • This device places the enemy in a non-fragile Hold, capturing them and levitating them in a bubble shield. When the shield falls so do they, dropping unceremoniously to the ground, suffering physical damage. The disorientation reduces their Damage Resistance for several seconds.

  • A piece of Terran technology, this Assault Drone hovers over the shoulder of its user, firing its phaser at the target whenever the user deals damage from a weapon attack. Agent Philippa Georgiou graciously provided the schematics in exchange for certain considerations.

  • The dark confluence of Section 31 brain scan technology and Terran agonizer tech, this device ruins the mind of an enemy. It confuses them, placates them toward the user’s allies, and sends them into a berserk melee frenzy. Agonizer energy radiates off of them, damaging them and any other foes nearby.

  • Forward-deployed mines creep about the battlefield only to be revealed at the critical moment in a ring around the target. Especially large targets are likely to set off the mines as soon as they arm, as are crowds of the target’s allies who stand too near.

New Captain’s Traits are also available within the Section 31 Lock Box. They are universal and available to all species.

  • Periodically Exposes the highest rank nearby enemy as a danger to the alliance. (Certain attacks Exploit enemies who are Exposed, dealing massive damage)
  • Dealing flanking damage with a Weapon Attack temporarily grants guaranteed Critical Chance.
  • Using Control Kit Modules reduces the cooldown of all Universal Kit Modules.
  • Periodically launches an interstellar torpedo at the highest rank enemy. The torpedo warps to the enemy’s last known location.
  • The first time any of your Torpedoes, Hangar Pets, or Mines would take damage, they instead become briefly invulnerable.
  • Using Control Bridge Officer Abilities reduces the cooldown of all Universal Consoles.

There are many other prizes within the  Section 31 Lock Box  for players to acquire, such as R&D Packs, Boosts, and other assorted items. Each box also contains a Faulty Section 31 Holo-Disguise, which breaks upon entering combat.

The Lobi Store also has two new items available for purchase:

star trek online section 31

  • This stealthy phaser is the favored weapon of Section 31 field agents. Like the space covert weapons, it generates half as much Threat as normal and replaces the phaser’s standard proc with a boost to speed. It additionally improves Expose duration and Expose chance, can Exploit with its primary attack, and its Expose-capable wide fire mode has dramatically lower cooldown than a traditional weapon.
  • The finest in A2/AD warfare, this console dramatically improves mine performance. Specifically, it increases Mine damage, decreases Mine global cooldown, and adds ‘creep’ functionality to all Mines. Any mines that find themselves too far away from enemy ships will slowly move toward the closest enemy ship within sensor range. This creep can be disabled by activating the Console and toggled freely.

Captains will also be able to purchase the distinct, black, Section 31 comm badge in the Lobi Store.

Bringing the spy tech of Section 31 to the masses is bound to cause waves. It generated a clandestine revenue stream for Section 31, drawing echoes of certain covert arms sale affairs from earth history, and the proliferation of tools makes deniability all the more plausible. Step into the pale moonlight with the  Section 31 Lock Box,  as well as the additional Lobi Store entries, coming to PC on May 14 th , 2019.

Star Trek: Section 31 - Everything You Need To Know

Michelle Yeoh wearing emperor's clothes

Since hitting the streaming realm in 2017, "Star Trek: Discovery" has been one of the best of the various incarnations in the greater Trek-verse. It's also become one of the more gloriously diverse editions of the "Star Trek" franchise, with creators populating the USS Discovery with a crew befitting a narrative that has always purported to explore brave new worlds. And just like its predecessors, the series has indeed boldly gone where no prior iteration — streaming or otherwise — has gone before.

It seems the journey begun in "Star Trek: Discovery" will push that exploration even further when the series' first spin-off finally makes its way to the Paramount+ platform. That project will be a Paramount+ original movie with the working title "Star Trek: Section 31," and it's set to expand on one of the most thrilling storylines from the first three seasons of "Star Trek: Discovery."

Here's everything new and returning fans need to know about "Star Trek: Section 31."

What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?

If you've been watching "Star Trek: Discovery" since its early days, the name Section 31 no doubt rings a few particular bells. And you might also know a Section 31 spin-off project has been in the works at Paramount+ for a few years. That fact was initially reported by  Entertainment Weekly  in 2019, and it's only fitting that the outlet was among the first to note  that the project is now finally happening .

As EW notes, it appears that "Star Trek: Section 31" will now hit Paramount+ as a single, feature-length movie instead of the series its creators initially envisioned. It will still detail the inner workings of the titular Starfleet sect, which are basically like the Central Intelligence Agency for the Federation of Planets. To the delight of "Star Trek" fans, the movie will be centered on the "Discovery" character who essentially introduced the clandestine agency to the Trek-loving masses.

That character is Emperor Philippa Georgiou, and the series will follow the woman as she joins the secret Starfleet agency, doing so as she attempts to address her past transgressions. And as "Discovery" fans know, that will be no minor feat.

Who will appear in Star Trek: Section 31?

As thrilled as "Star Trek: Discovery" fans will be by the return of Emperor Phillipa Georgiou, they'll be even more over the moon to learn the character will be played by the actor who portrayed her on the series, Michelle Yeoh . The "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star was a major get for "Discovery" when she joined the series in its first season, but it's safe to say that's even more true these days. Yeoh is, of course, coming off a career year thanks to the runaway success of her film "Everything Everywhere All At Once," for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

As it is, that big win, and the career boon that will surely follow, may help explain why "Star Trek: Section 31" has transitioned from a time-consuming series to a standalone movie. Whatever the case, it'll be great to see Yeoh back in Trek mode, as her character was a fan-favorite over the first three seasons of "Discovery."

Phillipa Georgiou was actually two characters as it were, with Yeoh playing both the Prime dimension version of the character and her mirror dimension counterpart. Given the fate of the Prime iteration, Yeoh will understandably return as the mirror-verse version. And it should be fascinating to watch that character's "Section 31" journey. For now, Yeoh is the only confirmed cast member of "Star Trek: Section 31."

Who will write and direct Star Trek: Section 31

As  Entertainment Weekly  reported, the telling of Emperor Phillipa Georgiou's story in "Star Trek: Section 31" will be in capable hands, with Craig Sweeny serving as the film's writer and Olatunde Osunsanmi on board to direct. Both writer and director are alums of "Star Trek: Discovery," so they're familiar with the world in which "Section 31" is set.

As for Sweeny, "Discovery" was hardly his first rodeo in Hollywood, with the scribe also earning credits on hit series like "The 4400," "Medium," "Elementary," and "Limitless." And Osunsanmi has been working as an executive producer on "Discovery" since its inception, helming 12 episodes of the series himself — including several fronting Michelle Yeoh's characters. In addition, Osunsanmi has also directed episodes of "Under the Dome," "Falling Skies," "Gotham," "Colony," and "Bates Motel," just in case you were questioning his genre cred. That sort of behind-the-scenes talent should get fans excited to see what they do with "Star Trek: Section 31."

When will Star Trek: Section 31 be released?

Unfortunately, no official date has been set for the movie's streaming release. The good news is that fans will likely not have to wait that long to get eyes on it. According to Entertainment Weekly , "Star Trek: Section 31" is set to start shooting later this year. And that means the film may be lining up to hit Paramount+ sometime in 2024.

That is pure speculation, of course, with much relying on "Section 31" not hitting any production snags along the way. But given the Twitter reactions from some fans, people are pretty excited about Yeoh's return to the franchise. That includes user @nancywyuen , who celebrated the news with the post, "Best news of the day: Michelle Yeoh headlining a #StarTrek movie." They were not alone in their excitement, with  @wenbbilliams replying to the news with "In other news I'm now a 'Star Trek' fan," and @OkDoomsday summing up the general feeling of fandom by stating, "Michelle Yeoh was by far the best thing about 'Discovery.' Looking forward to this."

Thus begins the wait to see Michelle Yeoh back in action in "Star Trek: Section 31."
