Kaare Klint is usually cited as the creator of the modern safari chair, based off British military designs (like the  Roorkee chair), and played an instrumental role in refining and popularizing its design. Understanding Wood: Wood is a Natural Product

All wood is a product of nature. While each wood type grows best in specific conditions, nature provides differences which are critical to the growing soil and weather The beauty of real wood is created by the infinite variation of grain, texture, and colour. This is especially true of hardwood; hardwoods are particularly noted for their variety in graining. It is the nature of hardwoods to have mineral streaks (light brown, dark brown, to black areas in the wood) and great variation in graining.

Care and Maintenance

We manufacture furniture for Indoor and Outdoor use. There is a difference in the type of finish applied for each and also in the care and maintenance of each.

Indoor & Outdoor Furniture:  Our furniture needs to be maintained once a week. Re-oiling will be necessary once a week to prevent checking, warping and bending. The furniture piece needs to be oiled on all sides so that it can absorb and expel moisture equally. We recommend using Burmese Yellow teak Oil or Woodoc Weatherproof Wax.conditions will have their effect on grain patterns and colour.

The Standard Director’s Chair

The Standard Director’s Chair is an exceptionally tough, versatile and comfortable folding camp chair with wide seat that is suitable for private use, in camps and lodges, around the bush fire or on boat cruises.

It is an affordable but still very robust version of The African Touch Safari Director’s chair,  and has the same extra wide self-tightening seat and folds away neatly for hassle free storage.

Seat covers are UV stabilised, waterproof ripstop canvas (double padded and quilted or single). Standard colours are Howard Green and Sand.

The steel cleats and hinges of our Directors Chairs are powder coated and baked in an oven to protect them against the corrosive salt air of coastal regions. In addition, the cleats are fitted with stainless steel screws for the same purpose.

Recommended weight limit 120kg (260lb). Please do not rock back and forth on any chair.

Maintenance:

Your oiled Director’s Chair receives two applications of The Oil prior to delivery. Our outlets carry stock, should you require it. We recommend you re-apply when the finish looks faded or dry. The recommended application procedure is as follows:

• Wipe surface down with a clean cotton cloth lightly moistened with mineral turpentine. (Ensure that all surfaces are completely dry and clean before proceeding with the next step)
• Use a clean cotton cloth or soft bristled brush dipped in the oil and apply in light, short strokes, ensuring thorough and even distribution of the oil.
• Leave the oil on the furniture for at least 1 to 2 hours (but not more than 24 hours), to allow absorption into the wood.
• Use a clean cotton cloth and wipe off all excess liquid to leave a natural smooth finish.
• Allow to dry for approximately 24 hours.

If a wet glass or similar is left on the surface it may leave a watermark. In this case please wipe the water off as soon as possible, and if necessary apply some more African Touch Furniture Oil. If the mark is still slightly visible you can rub with a little baking soda mixed with an equal part of water, wipe off with a damp cloth and re-apply the oil.

Safari Centre is a well-established and influential entity in the 4×4 sector in South Africa, with a wide national footprint of retail and fitment centres.

Who we are.

Known for our high quality vehicle accessories and insight into a range of off-road activities, this brand has helped to open the door to 4×4 pursuits for many thousands of enthusiasts. Our Safari Centre stores have well trained staff who can convert off-road dreams into reality with the correct equipment and advice, enabling you to make those bucket-list trips you have long been planning.

It was in mid 2013 that the Imperial Group, previously a 75% shareholder in Safari Centre, bought the remaining equity with a view to turning the company into South Africa’s foremost 4×4 and accessory brand.

The Safari Centre brand has been around since 1979 and was bought by renowned 4×4 expert, Andre de Villiers, in 1998. From humble beginnings as a single outlet in Menlyn, Pretoria, Safari Centre now boasts more than 16 stores nationwide and plans are in the pipeline to expand operations even further by joining forces with Campworld, another prominent leisure label within the IMPERIAL Leisure Division.

Already, several Campworld/Safari Centre collectives have been opened – amongst others in Mosselbay, Nelspruit, Vereeniging, and Pietermaritzburg.

Safari Centre will also in the future place focus on securing 4×4 vehicle accessories that will be available exclusively from these stores. The now established Offgrid brand of 4×4 accessories offer a variety of front and rear replacement bumpers, rock sliders, bash plates and snorkels for most makes of 4×4 vehicles. This range of products will in the future be expanded to offer 4×4 enthusiasts greater options when choosing their vehicle accessories.

AA Accreditation

Safari Centre boasts an AA approved fitment centre at each of their branches.
 With approval from leading automotive manufactures, only tested, quality 4×4 accessories are professionally fitted by skilled staff in our workshops.
 We invite you to experience quality, efficient service at any one of our fitment centres. To back up our promise of quality service, we carry a two-year warranty on all fitments.

Fitment Warranty

Safari Centre warrants that all workmanship and parts used are free from defects according to current industry standards.
 Safari Centre’s workmanship is backed by a 2 year warranty, and all parts and components fitted, carry a manufacturer warranty applicable to the specific part or component.
 Safari Centre further warrants to replace or repair under warranty any vehicle components damaged as a direct result of their workmanship and parts used. This warranty is only applicable to vehicles still under the vehicle manufacturer’s warranty and becomes effective on the date of fitment and remains effective for the duration of the new vehicle manufacturer warranty. Claims during this period will not extend the warranty.

Safari Centre is appointed as Warn Red Letters Dealers and Service Centres. This means our dealers are authorized Warn service centres. Warn offers a standard 1 year warranty with all winches and accessories. If the winch has been serviced once a year and the service booklet has been completed with every service, the warranty on the winches are extended to a Limited Lifetime Warranty based on manufacturer’s defect. The warranty on the Tabor range remains a 1 year warranty only.

After the elections, some familiar names might leave the stage.

If UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calls an election for later this year and loses, he will resign from the party leadership before the Tories kick him out. If Labour leader Keir Starmer doesn’t win that election, as expected, he will resign and make way for new blood.

What will happen to our party leaders after May 29? We know what is likely to happen if the ANC’s national support plunges to the 40% range. President Cyril Ramaphosa, a pretty decent fellow who largely understands the idea of taking personal responsibility, and knows that his comrades will be looking daggers at him, will find himself faced with a blank screen on his beloved iPad. It will be time for him to tap-tap his resignation letter...

How to Watch the 2024 Met Gala Livestream Replay

The 2024 Met Gala took place last night, on Monday, May 6. For the fourth year in a row, Vogue hosted the night’s exclusive livestream, where all of the action from the red carpet unfolded in real time.

This year, the Vogue Met Gala livestream was hosted by actor Gwendoline Christie, producer and actor La La Anthony, and model Ashley Graham. Multihyphenate Emma Chamberlain returned as Vogue ’s special correspondent to interview some of the biggest stars on the carpet. Meanwhile, this year’s theme—“ Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion ”—celebrated the Costume Institute’s new exhibition of the same name. The presentation will feature approximately 250 items drawn from the museum’s permanent collection, some rarely seen in public before, displayed in entirely new ways. Of course, the Met Gala’s star-studded red carpet on the first Monday in May cannot be missed either.

The dress code for the 2024 Met Gala was The Garden of Time, which takes inspiration from a short story of the same title written by J.G. Ballard in 1962.

Who are the co-chairs this year?

Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, Bad Bunny, and Vogue ’s Anna Wintour served as the evening’s co-chairs . Honorary chairs for the evening, meanwhile, were Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Chew.

Kruger Directors Chair

The Kruger folding Director’s Chair is a unique version of the classic Director’s Chair. All components are hand turned and measured by the expert eye of our master craftsmen. Solid brass hinges compliment the handcrafted Zambezi Teak . The folding parts of the chair are cushioned with leather washers for a smooth action.

The result is utility chair of rare beauty, elegance and comfort that sets it apart from other chairs of the same genre.

Recommended weight limit 110kg (220lb). Please do not rock back and forth on any chair.

We wanted a very upmarket Director’s Chair for clients who want to distinguish their properties from those purchasing our other Director’s Chairs. Richard Lowe thought long and hard about this, and decided to build a chair using all turned components in Zambezi Teak. Even the tenon joints are turned on the lathe by hand to exactly fit mortice holes that were pre-drilled into the square stock. The beautifully hand turned components are measured by the expert eye of our master craftsmen. We then commissioned the connecting hinges out of solid polished brass, and decided on an antique genuine leather double quilted seat and back cover. The result is a unique chair that has certainly grabbed the attention of many interior decorators.

The material used.

The Kruger Director’s Chair uses solid brass hinges compliment the hand worked Zambezi Teak . Zambezi teak is a very attractive red-brown timber and exceptionally hard. Our normal finishing coat is a lacquer, but an oil finish is also available.

Seat covers can be either quilted genuine upholstery leather or a high quality Auto seat canvas designed for top of the range SUVs.

Where is the Kruger Director’s Chair used?

Generally the Kruger Director’s Chair is purchased by upmarket Safari Lodges for their dining chairs. They have also been purchased as office chairs and for verandas.

The chair often sells with the Expedition Folding Table

To protect your lacquered finish please place your table away from direct sunlight. Apply a good furniture wax or polish, initially twice a month, thereafter once a month. Apply sufficient to thinly cover the surface. As it dries (becomes dull) buff with a clean cloth until a beautiful sheen is achieved. Between waxings, keep the finish clean with a soft cloth or duster, and buff without wax.

Your oiled Kruger Director’s Chair receives two applications of The African Touch Furniture Oil prior to delivery. Our outlets carry stock, should you require it. We recommend you re-apply when the finish looks faded or dry. The recommended application procedure is as follows:

• Wipe surface down with a clean cotton cloth lightly moistened with mineral turpentine. (Ensure that all surfaces are completely dry and clean before proceeding with the next step)
• Use a clean cotton cloth or soft bristled brush dipped in the oil and apply in light, short strokes, ensuring thorough and even distribution of the oil.
• Leave the oil on the furniture for at least 1 to 2 hours (but not more than 24 hours), to allow absorption into the wood.
• Use a clean cotton cloth and wipe off all excess liquid to leave a natural smooth finish.
• Allow to dry for approximately 24 hours.

If a wet glass or similar is left on the surface it may leave a watermark. In this case please wipe the water off as soon as possible, and if necessary apply some more Satinwood 28 base. If the mark is still slightly visible you can rub with a little baking soda mixed with an equal part of water, wipe off with a damp cloth and re-apply the oil.

Camps and lodges:

For camps and lodges in Southern Africa we can quote on delivery with our transport or you may arrange collection. For East Africa and beyond it is often more convenient for us to quote containerised freight for large orders and air freight to nearest airport for smaller orders.

International Orders:

Certain knock down products can be delivered by courier direct to you. Slightly cheaper is to organise air freight to your nearest airport. For large orders we can quote containerised delivery by sea.

Smaller orders in Southern Africa:

We will quote for delivery by courier or our transport depending on your location.

For orders to Africa, Europe, Australia, and North America we provide a Certificate of Origin so that duty is not payable in your country of destination.

Orders supplied from stock we request payment in full when the order is placed. For products made to order we request a 50% deposit on order with the balance paid on completion.

We cannot offer a warrantee on chairs except for defects in material and workmanship that affect the integrity of the chair under normal use and weight limits. The reason for this is that chairs can be subject to huge stresses (such as when a heavy person rocks back on the back legs) that are impossible to compensate for in the construction of the chair without compromising on the design appeal.

We build with timber harvested from natural forests. The charm of this material is that no two pieces are exactly the same in colour, character or grain, and they will contain natural imperfections such as knots, stress cracks and so on that enhance their authenticity and attractiveness. As a result no 2 pieces will ever be identical and products may have natural imperfections. However, these will never be allowed to compromise the quality of construction of your piece.

For orders of 20 Kruger Director’s Chairs or more we offer a 10% discount.

Prices include shipping to your nearest main port. Should you require shipment ‘Door to Door’ or to an isolated port we may need to update your quote depending on the extra cost. The price excludes fees at the port of entry (customs clearance, tax such as VAT etc).

The Kruger Director’s Chair folds conveniently for shipping. The chairs are packed 6 to a box. The dimensions of the box are 1200mm (48″) wide x 560mm (22.5″) high x 925mm (37″) deep and the weight approximately 50 kg (110lbs). If a smaller box is required we can make it.
